[1:16] Speaker 1: visionary behind the Look by Joy, She's crafted signature brow
[1:21] Speaker 1: techniques as eyebrow Techniques, and an innovation innovative beauty line

[1:38] Speaker 2: Membing? Did they say that right, Joe? No, it's Joy
[1:42] Speaker 2: maybe jar maybein?
[1:45] Speaker 1: Please work with the Money Making Conversation master Class Joy Maybein?
[1:49] Speaker 1: And Joe got it out here phonetically spelled out. I
[1:51] Speaker 1: did all this big speech and I just messed it up.
[1:54] Speaker 1: I apologize. Work with the Money Making Conversation master Class.
[1:57] Speaker 2: Joy.
[1:57] Speaker 1: How you doing.
[1:59] Speaker 2: I'm great, I'm gray. I'm so happy to be here.
[2:01] Speaker 1: Well, thank you. You know, because of the fact that
[2:04] Speaker 1: you know this is a this is an entrepreneurial show.
[2:06] Speaker 1: And I and I you know, I have six sisters
[2:09] Speaker 1: or passed away to of them, I passed away, but
[2:12] Speaker 1: I have sisters all in my life, so I always
[2:14] Speaker 1: makeup was all around. I had a daughter, she's twenty seven,
[2:17] Speaker 1: so you know, beauty and fashion and looks and skincare
[2:21] Speaker 1: has always been a part of my life growing up.
[2:25] Speaker 1: Now tell us about a little bit about your background,
[2:28] Speaker 1: because I what do your website. You're a very fashionable person.
[2:32] Speaker 1: You seem to really lock into that culture of beauty.
[2:36] Speaker 1: What got you started joy?
[2:39] Speaker 2: Well, you know, I always was a makeup girl. But
[2:42] Speaker 2: you know, back when I was coming up, you know,
[2:45] Speaker 2: makeup wasn't really considered a career, you know what I'm saying.
[2:49] Speaker 2: So I always was into makeup. I was always into nails, hair,
[2:54] Speaker 2: right close all of this. I was a really really
[2:57] Speaker 2: girly girl. Even in how high school. I used to
[3:00] Speaker 2: do the makeup for my drill team sisters, for our
[3:06] Speaker 2: drill team performances. I did my friends makeups when we
[3:09] Speaker 2: you know, when we went out. And when I got
[3:12] Speaker 2: to college, I actually turned my my dorm room into
[3:17] Speaker 2: a eyebrow, like so long. I know it sounds no no, because.
[3:23] Speaker 1: In college I turned my dorm room into a piece
[3:25] Speaker 1: of shop. So I know exactly you an entrepreneurial spirits
[3:29] Speaker 1: start somewhere, you know what I'm saying.
[3:31] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a sweet We had sweets before sweets was
[3:33] Speaker 2: even Invina.
[3:34] Speaker 1: Come on, now, come on now, let's let's let's talk
[3:36] Speaker 1: about you and that entrepreneurial spirit that early on because
[3:40] Speaker 1: I tell everybody it's not easy cutting hair, it's not
[3:43] Speaker 1: easy doing makeup. That's a gift. How did you really
[3:46] Speaker 1: start realizing that you had a talent to be able
[3:49] Speaker 1: to look at a person's face and put the right tone,
[3:52] Speaker 1: the right color, structure and bring out their their overall beauty.
[3:57] Speaker 2: I mean, I guess since I you know, I start
[3:59] Speaker 2: doing it as a child, and then I started doing
[4:02] Speaker 2: my friends, so you know, we started. I guess I started.
[4:05] Speaker 2: I was self taught and was learning as I was going,
[4:09] Speaker 2: you know. And then eventually when I got to as
[4:15] Speaker 2: I opened up the the my suite in the dorm.
[4:20] Speaker 2: I ended up working at a Cosmic Encounter while I
[4:25] Speaker 2: was in college, so that's when I started actually doing
[4:29] Speaker 2: makeup for the first time professionally or you know, at
[4:33] Speaker 2: somebody's business. And then I ended up working in the salon.
[4:37] Speaker 2: And that's when I at the salon, our main thing
[4:42] Speaker 2: was brows and lashes, so we were doing brows and
[4:46] Speaker 2: lash yeares before browse and lashes was a thing right
[4:49] Speaker 2: right about like twenty five years ago. Don't add my age, Okay,
[4:55] Speaker 2: I don't add up my age. I am telling you how
[4:58] Speaker 2: long it was, but only started doing and that you
[5:00] Speaker 2: said you had a math degree.
[5:03] Speaker 1: All right, don't worry about that. You look fantastic, joy
[5:08] Speaker 1: but your you know, the entrepreneurial spirit is what gets
[5:11] Speaker 1: to me is it's like, Okay, for instance, you have
[5:13] Speaker 1: licensings for cosmetology, cosmetologists licensing that you can go to.
[5:18] Speaker 1: Now when you come to makeup and all that, do
[5:20] Speaker 1: you have to go through any special training or get
[5:22] Speaker 1: license to do makeup?
[5:24] Speaker 2: So back in the day, if you want to work
[5:26] Speaker 2: on set, yeah, you would have to are working a salon,
[5:29] Speaker 2: you would have to have a license. So I am
[5:32] Speaker 2: a licensed cosmetologist and I got my license in the
[5:36] Speaker 2: during with an apprenticeship at the salon. So I'm licensed
[5:39] Speaker 2: in the state of Georgia. But but if you work
[5:43] Speaker 2: at a makeup counter, you do not need a license.
[5:46] Speaker 1: Okay, cool. So that means that anybody that can. So
[5:49] Speaker 1: when we go into these stores, these high end stores,
[5:51] Speaker 1: I see them all the time. They want you to
[5:53] Speaker 1: sniff some into some cologne, or want to come over
[5:57] Speaker 1: here for someone.
[5:58] Speaker 2: Have a license to sell person or put some lipsticks
[6:02] Speaker 2: on someone or anything like that. But you do have
[6:07] Speaker 2: because they're actually just testing it on you. You do
[6:10] Speaker 2: you're supposed to have a license to charge. So really
[6:15] Speaker 2: cosmetology is if you read the fine print, is these
[6:20] Speaker 2: reluicious services that you charge.
[6:23] Speaker 1: For right now, that's why you need Let's talk about you.
[6:28] Speaker 1: You like you said your girlfriends in high school, you know,
[6:33] Speaker 1: making everybody. Oh yeah, what Chorgie? You do my makeup?
[6:35] Speaker 1: Don't you mess with my page?
[6:37] Speaker 2: You go to college?
[6:38] Speaker 1: Now, how did you start setting rates though? You know,
[6:41] Speaker 1: like my pizza was just five dollars. I had a little,
[6:43] Speaker 1: little small pizza. I made it there five dollars. I
[6:46] Speaker 1: had a line out to do it. That was my
[6:47] Speaker 1: number because the crust only cost me twenty five cents. Okay.
[6:51] Speaker 1: I got made some ragu sauce. Okay, it was a
[6:53] Speaker 1: big old jaw, did about ten pizzas with that large jaw.
[6:56] Speaker 1: Then I put like about ten slices of pepperone ale,
[6:59] Speaker 1: and then I had my ground beef. You know, So
[7:02] Speaker 1: I had my price point. So I charged five dollars,
[7:05] Speaker 1: but I probably only spent by seventy five cents a pizza.
[7:08] Speaker 1: That was my price. So I was making probably about
[7:10] Speaker 1: four twenty you know what I'm saying about four twenty
[7:12] Speaker 1: five a pizza. So how did you get your price point?
[7:15] Speaker 2: I was kind of me and you were similar. We
[7:17] Speaker 2: probably was. We probably was in the dorm next to
[7:19] Speaker 2: me because I so I used to charge five dollars
[7:24] Speaker 2: if you bought your own razor, okay, in seven if
[7:28] Speaker 2: I had to supply one. Okay, So you know the
[7:31] Speaker 2: same thing the Raisors. You know, back then, a box
[7:34] Speaker 2: of Raisors is probably like fifty cent, right, you know
[7:37] Speaker 2: what I'm saying. So we were we were on the
[7:39] Speaker 2: same markup right, and it was on the same markup
[7:43] Speaker 2: you know, I mean, you know, it's you know, back
[7:45] Speaker 2: then it was kind of like, okay, let me see
[7:47] Speaker 2: where they charged. Okay, I'm a charge here, so you know,
[7:51] Speaker 2: And but as I got, as I got you know, license,
[7:55] Speaker 2: I got more experience, I was like, you know, were
[7:57] Speaker 2: going up, well the twenty five, you know, because this
[8:02] Speaker 2: is this is all these years in the game, all
[8:04] Speaker 2: this education. I'm quick, you know, I can get you
[8:08] Speaker 2: in and out. So you know, that's how the rates
[8:12] Speaker 2: are going up. And of course you know with time
[8:14] Speaker 2: they go up anyway. But you know, if somebody's out
[8:18] Speaker 2: there and they're trying to figure out how much you charge, yeah,
[8:20] Speaker 2: you can do like an analysis of what's around you,
[8:23] Speaker 2: but to still see what you have to offer, because
[8:27] Speaker 2: if you were, if you're the elite in the game,
[8:30] Speaker 2: then you are the lead in the game. It's like,
[8:32] Speaker 2: you're just talking about this these department stores, Well, the
[8:37] Speaker 2: same white T shirt is in that store and the
[8:40] Speaker 2: one is Target. They made by the same main factor.
[8:43] Speaker 2: It's just this, you know, how it's presented.
[8:47] Speaker 1: You're right, and that's important people understand. Branding is the case,
[8:50] Speaker 1: you know. So that's why you have your brand called
[8:53] Speaker 1: the Look by Joy. Now what is that look? Before
[8:57] Speaker 1: we go to break I want you to break that
[8:58] Speaker 1: down to us. And when did you really believe that
[9:01] Speaker 1: you had a brand that you could say basically and
[9:05] Speaker 1: it be a difference maker because you're a very competitive
[9:07] Speaker 1: feel beauty. Talk to us about that as an entrepreneur.
[9:11] Speaker 2: So the Look by Joy, you know, it started off
[9:14] Speaker 2: with just makeup. We'll start off with just brows. And
[9:17] Speaker 2: brows are my thing. People know me. If somebody see
[9:20] Speaker 2: me and they say where I know you from, I
[9:21] Speaker 2: just automatically say I've done you eyebrows and they're like yeah,
[9:25] Speaker 2: because I am clearly the brow lady. But and I've
[9:30] Speaker 2: always been quick. So a lot of people used to
[9:33] Speaker 2: come to me. Now I would. I am good, and
[9:37] Speaker 2: you know I haven't always been this good, but they
[9:40] Speaker 2: would come to me because I was quick. So when
[9:43] Speaker 2: I came out with my sixty second brow kit, that's
[9:47] Speaker 2: kind of where I got the name from, because somebody
[9:50] Speaker 2: was like, yo, I'm gonna take you a minute due
[9:51] Speaker 2: do a brow if that and I was like, okay.
[9:55] Speaker 2: So during COVID, when my clients couldn't get to me,
[9:59] Speaker 2: I put it to yet They're a kid for them
[10:01] Speaker 2: to you know, feeling their brows in less than a minute,
[10:05] Speaker 2: because that's what their thing was. They was like, okay,
[10:07] Speaker 2: we can we at home, we can feeling in. But
[10:09] Speaker 2: it's just taking me like ten minutes. It's taking me
[10:11] Speaker 2: fifteen minutes. I don't know where to start. So me
[10:14] Speaker 2: as a brand, of course, I'm known for brows, but
[10:18] Speaker 2: I'm also all I'm known for speed too. So yeah, now.
[10:23] Speaker 1: Let's talk about it. Because you you educated me here
[10:25] Speaker 1: a little bit. Here, Now you say fill it in,
[10:27] Speaker 1: because you've said that several times. What do you mean
[10:30] Speaker 1: when you say feel it in?
[10:31] Speaker 2: Now?
[10:31] Speaker 1: I'm sorry if my listeners are saying he don't know nothing,
[10:35] Speaker 1: because I don't.
[10:36] Speaker 2: Okay, it's stealing in just like if you go to
[10:40] Speaker 2: the barbershop and they feeling your hairline.
[10:43] Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay.
[10:45] Speaker 2: So we're stealing our eyebrows with makeup.
[10:47] Speaker 1: Okay, okay. Now let me ask you this before we
[10:49] Speaker 1: go to break.
[10:49] Speaker 2: Should I be telling the girls secretly?
[10:51] Speaker 1: Well, you just live. You can't take it back. Now
[10:54] Speaker 1: it's out there now, Joy, look by Joey is telling
[10:56] Speaker 1: the truth. That's why she's on Money Making Conversation. It's
[11:00] Speaker 1: just masterclass. She been telling you. She's been in high
[11:03] Speaker 1: school telling everybody about beauty and joe you know, first
[11:07] Speaker 1: of all, what stands out to me is your personality.
[11:10] Speaker 1: That has to be a high end part of your
[11:12] Speaker 1: brand build correct.
[11:14] Speaker 2: Yeah it is, Yeah, it is. I mean I have
[11:18] Speaker 2: fun with it, you know. It's something I like doing.
[11:20] Speaker 2: I like interacting with my clients. And it's one thing
[11:24] Speaker 2: when I do teach my classes and I talk to
[11:27] Speaker 2: my mentees, I tell them that you you have got
[11:30] Speaker 2: to start being nice to people and you gotta start
[11:31] Speaker 2: having fun with people, because it's it's it's so many
[11:35] Speaker 2: people out there, but people want to come and look
[11:39] Speaker 2: good and feel good and It's transferable, especially as a
[11:43] Speaker 2: person is doing your services. They you know, feel good too,
[11:48] Speaker 2: you know, so I always you know, my mama gave
[11:51] Speaker 2: me the name Joy, so I just live up to it.
[11:53] Speaker 2: So when people come and they sit in my chair,
[11:55] Speaker 2: I like for them to leave happy, you know, to.
[11:58] Speaker 1: Look by Joy. We all gonna learn more about that
[12:01] Speaker 1: sixty second brow kit. And also she's gonna she gonna
[12:04] Speaker 1: tell me why why people whatch Some women in the
[12:07] Speaker 1: removed their ad lashes, they eyebrows, removed their eyebrows and
[12:11] Speaker 1: then draw them back. I gotta find that out too.
[12:13] Speaker 1: I gotta find that out.
[12:14] Speaker 3: Please don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more
[12:17] Speaker 3: money Making Conversations Masterclass. Welcome back to the Money Making
[12:27] Speaker 3: Conversations Masterclass, hosted by Rashaan McDonald. Money Making Conversations Masterclass
[12:33] Speaker 3: continues online at Moneymakingconversations dot com and follow money Making
[12:37] Speaker 3: Conversations Masterclass on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
[12:42] Speaker 1: She's been a joy? Did you like that Joy? Did
[12:45] Speaker 1: you learn to like?
[12:47] Speaker 2: Okay?
[12:47] Speaker 1: She's a visionary behind the Look by Joy. She's crafted
[12:50] Speaker 1: signature brow techniques and an innovative beauty line. Now Joy
[12:56] Speaker 1: Mentorship Mentorship that's really key. I talk about that line
[13:00] Speaker 1: on the show. And you know, you come into this
[13:03] Speaker 1: business young who had an impact on you, like maybe
[13:08] Speaker 1: pointed you in the right direction or really told you
[13:11] Speaker 1: to go for your your ideas and put in and
[13:14] Speaker 1: writing the business side, who's your mentor.
[13:18] Speaker 2: Well, So back in the day, I don't know if
[13:21] Speaker 2: the kids know that, we used to work in like
[13:23] Speaker 2: salons and it was all open, so you could go
[13:27] Speaker 2: and talk to the next person, the person next to you,
[13:30] Speaker 2: across from you, or in front of you. You know.
[13:33] Speaker 2: Now everybody had a sweep, so it kind of kind
[13:36] Speaker 2: of you know, in their own world. But we had
[13:39] Speaker 2: our own, you know, we were in the salon, so
[13:41] Speaker 2: a lot of the older stylists, you know, they gave
[13:43] Speaker 2: me a lot of tips on you know, what to do,
[13:45] Speaker 2: how to handle clients. My family, I come from an
[13:50] Speaker 2: entrepreneurial family, so my mom she used to have her
[13:54] Speaker 2: own home childcare. My aunts and uncles they own businesses,
[13:58] Speaker 2: so I would go to them ak them, you know,
[14:01] Speaker 2: on the business side. You know things that I needed
[14:04] Speaker 2: to know. And I always tell people I am a
[14:06] Speaker 2: business person first. I just have a my niche is beauty,
[14:11] Speaker 2: so whatever it is I go into it thinking about
[14:15] Speaker 2: from the business side. It's kind of like how you
[14:17] Speaker 2: were saying you knew the numbers for how much you
[14:20] Speaker 2: was making out for each pizza, and I knew how
[14:22] Speaker 2: much I was making out for each brow. But a
[14:24] Speaker 2: lot of people and I'm sure your listeners notice, and
[14:27] Speaker 2: they probably I'm probably calling them out. They don't know
[14:30] Speaker 2: they numbers. They don't know how much money, how much
[14:32] Speaker 2: it costs. They just know that they ain't in the
[14:35] Speaker 2: red or they are in the red, but they don't
[14:37] Speaker 2: know how far they are in and those numbers. And
[14:40] Speaker 2: that business is key.
[14:43] Speaker 1: It really is that that that price point of what
[14:46] Speaker 1: your services costs. Well, especially if you if you deal
[14:50] Speaker 1: with a service that provides a product, you know, making
[14:53] Speaker 1: food or like in your case, you know you're involved
[14:56] Speaker 1: in makeup, chemicals, all kinds of things. You know, your servicing,
[15:01] Speaker 1: your delivering things, all that's taken into you know. I've
[15:05] Speaker 1: known some people that made mistake not knowing that they should,
[15:08] Speaker 1: you know, allow the customer to pay for the delivery.
[15:11] Speaker 1: They thought they were so nervous, they didn't they didn't
[15:14] Speaker 1: know how to break that out. They put that into
[15:17] Speaker 1: their product. They eventually realized that was mistaken. People used
[15:21] Speaker 1: to paying for shipping and handling. But if you don't,
[15:25] Speaker 1: like you said, Jord, if you don't do your research,
[15:28] Speaker 1: that's a big mistake that people make on a regular basis.
[15:31] Speaker 1: Now let's talk about you and your business mind. Why
[15:35] Speaker 1: did you set up your business?
[15:36] Speaker 3: Now?
[15:37] Speaker 1: You was, like I said, you talked about your journey,
[15:39] Speaker 1: you know, you know, worked at a you know, storefront
[15:43] Speaker 1: at the counter excuse me, and then all of a
[15:45] Speaker 1: sudden you went to a typical beauty salon with no suites.
[15:50] Speaker 1: Everybody has a suite now they are or private booth.
[15:54] Speaker 1: How did you decide that? Okay, you know, something is
[15:56] Speaker 1: time for me to branch out and trust my instincts.
[16:00] Speaker 2: Now, before I even did that, I was like, I
[16:03] Speaker 2: always sold products. Okay, so with any of your listeners
[16:08] Speaker 2: that are service providers, you have to always have a product. Now,
[16:14] Speaker 2: I probably wasn't as in depth at the beginning as
[16:17] Speaker 2: I am now, of course, because I've been like the China,
[16:20] Speaker 2: I source my own products and in manufacturers. But I
[16:25] Speaker 2: would do something as simple as go to the beauty
[16:27] Speaker 2: supply store buy up all the stuff that I was using.
[16:31] Speaker 2: Like said, there was a pencil I would buy all
[16:33] Speaker 2: the pencils and I would sell them out of salon
[16:37] Speaker 2: and they'd be like, well, you got the front of
[16:38] Speaker 2: you supply store. And I would tell them, we'll go
[16:40] Speaker 2: down there and get it. Of course you can't get
[16:42] Speaker 2: it because I bought them off. No, you come back.
[16:48] Speaker 2: And then when they come back, they like, ain't have none,
[16:51] Speaker 2: So do you want to get this one TOI for
[16:52] Speaker 2: ten dollars a night? Like, because you're gonna need it,
[16:55] Speaker 2: you know. So I love it. I love it. And
[17:04] Speaker 2: the lady, the lady who owned the beauty Splice store,
[17:06] Speaker 2: she was like, I know you want all of the pencils, yep, but.
[17:12] Speaker 1: She didn't know your mark up. Though she didn't know
[17:14] Speaker 1: your mark up though it.
[17:15] Speaker 2: Wasn't none of her business.
[17:20] Speaker 1: I love it, you know. Me, when I was in
[17:23] Speaker 1: uh in high school, I used to go buy the lollipops,
[17:26] Speaker 1: you know I used to do. I was to buy
[17:27] Speaker 1: them for a nickels or something for a quarter, you know, yeah,
[17:30] Speaker 1: and that's what you do. I bought them all and
[17:32] Speaker 1: then you control that market chair. You walking around in
[17:35] Speaker 1: the high school with lollipops, and then well you're gonna
[17:38] Speaker 1: get the lollipops. Were got the lollipops. Okay, it's just
[17:42] Speaker 1: twenty five cents.
[17:42] Speaker 2: Brother, simple man, simple man.
[17:46] Speaker 1: And then people understand that once you control the market chair,
[17:50] Speaker 1: then you control the industry. And that is so we
[17:53] Speaker 1: know we're laughing about it, but that is how business
[17:55] Speaker 1: structure comes about.
[17:58] Speaker 2: Yeah, they do get them another on some on some pops,
[18:02] Speaker 2: go some lonipops.
[18:03] Speaker 1: Right now, let's talk about you. You know you said
[18:05] Speaker 1: you went to China, right.
[18:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, So this was so after I left the salon,
[18:11] Speaker 2: I ended up opening up my my counter and I did.
[18:16] Speaker 2: I got with the wholesaler and they help you. They
[18:19] Speaker 2: help you, you know, open up your business. So you basically
[18:21] Speaker 2: buy a product from them, and you know, you sell
[18:24] Speaker 2: their product. But I came into the business with the
[18:29] Speaker 2: with the product, business with a service. So I was
[18:33] Speaker 2: like the number one seller because I had a service
[18:35] Speaker 2: and I had a product, and you know, the services
[18:38] Speaker 2: are just like an intro to the product. So I
[18:41] Speaker 2: always tell people, Uh, the client can only come with
[18:46] Speaker 2: one set of brows, but they can leave with several products. Okay,
[18:52] Speaker 2: so if you got you one client the cutting his hell,
[18:55] Speaker 2: he only gonna come with one head. I never seen
[18:57] Speaker 2: nobody come with two heads that you didn't. But yeah,
[19:03] Speaker 2: he can leave with shampoo, he can leave with a brush,
[19:06] Speaker 2: he can leave with some die, he can leave with
[19:08] Speaker 2: a T shirt, he can leave whatever he leave. He
[19:11] Speaker 2: told the service is just the intro to the product cells. Okay, right,
[19:19] Speaker 2: so that's what people got to that gotta remember. So
[19:21] Speaker 2: when once I knew that, my in my mind, I said,
[19:24] Speaker 2: I got to get these products. The cost of my goods,
[19:27] Speaker 2: the cost of goods, it's the cost of my goods
[19:30] Speaker 2: down as much as I can. So I started researching
[19:33] Speaker 2: trade shows and reaching out the vendors, and then I
[19:35] Speaker 2: ended up going to get vendor trade shows in Las Vegas,
[19:40] Speaker 2: China and in Italy.
[19:47] Speaker 1: So yeah, wow, so how can we reach out and
