John the Baptist's instruction to the crowds who came seeking baptism was practical and direct: if you have two shirts, share with the one who has none. If you have food, do the same. True repentance, he made clear, is not merely a change of heart. It produces a change in action. This principle runs throughout Scripture, from the Old Testament commands not to harvest a field a second time so the poor could glean, to the early church where believers regularly shared their resources with those in need as a natural overflow of the Holy Spirit's work in their lives. For those who follow Christ today, the same call remains: act justly, love mercy, walk humbly. Care for the poor and the hungry as if we were directly caring for our Savior Himself. Whatever we have been given, whether much or little, we are stewards of it — and wise stewardship means holding it with open hands, grateful for what we have and quick to share from any surplus with those who have not. Today's Bible Verse "Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same." — Luke 3:11, NIV Ponder Today • True repentance produces transformation in action, not just in attitude. John the Baptist's call to the crowds was not merely to feel differently about their lives — it was to live differently, beginning with how they shared what they had with those in need. • Wise stewardship is a natural overflow of our relationship with the Lord. As the Holy Spirit produces love, kindness, and compassion in us, caring for others with our resources stops being an obligation and becomes a genuine expression of faith. • Whatever we do for the poor and hungry, we do for Christ Himself. Matthew 25:34-40 makes this staggering connection unmistakably clear. Stewardship is not just a financial principle — it is an act of worship directed toward our Savior. • We live in a culture that promotes gaining more and wasting freely. Reorienting our priorities around what God cares about — justice, mercy, compassion, and love — requires intentional effort and the Spirit's ongoing work in our hearts. • Contentment and generosity grow together. When we are genuinely grateful for what we have and hold it with open hands, we become more attentive to the needs around us and more willing to give from whatever surplus we carry. A Prayer for You Today Lord, forgive me for the times I have wasted my resources. I live in a society that values gaining more, often more than I need, while promoting wastefulness at the same time. As I lean into my relationship with You, help me reorient my priorities around what You care about: justice, mercy, compassion, love, and kindness. Produce in me by Your Holy Spirit the actions that flow from genuine faith. Let me live with contentment, thankful for the necessities You provide, and with open hands and an open heart that is quick to think of others. Guide me to give from any area of surplus to bless those in need. And in every circumstance, may I care for others as if I were directly serving You, my Savior. In Your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen. [0:02] Speaker 1: Life Audio. Thank you for listening to your Daily Prayer,
[0:15] Speaker 1: a podcast dedicated to helping you find the words you
[0:18] Speaker 1: need to connect with your Father in Heaven. No matter
[0:21] Speaker 1: what is going on in your life today, you can
[0:24] Speaker 1: trust that God wants to hear from you. Right after
[0:27] Speaker 1: this short word from our sponsor, you will pray to
[0:29] Speaker 1: today's prayer to wisely steward our resources. Together. A Prayer
[0:53] Speaker 1: to wisely Steward Our Resources written by Sophia Briger read
[0:58] Speaker 1: by Kerrie Eichberger. Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and
[1:04] Speaker 1: do not begin to say to yourselves we have Abraham
[1:08] Speaker 1: as our father. For I tell you that out of
[1:10] Speaker 1: these stones God can raise up children. For Abraham, the
[1:14] Speaker 1: axe is already at the root of the trees, and
[1:16] Speaker 1: every tree that does not produce good fruit will be
[1:19] Speaker 1: cut down and thrown into the fire. What should we do, then,
[1:23] Speaker 1: the crowd asked, John answered, anyone who has two shirts
[1:27] Speaker 1: should share with the one who has none, and anyone
[1:30] Speaker 1: who has food should do the same. Look three verses
[1:34] Speaker 1: eight through eleven. I frowned at the expiration date printed
[1:39] Speaker 1: on the package. There were only four eggs left, which
[1:42] Speaker 1: meant my family had eaten most of the dozen, but
[1:44] Speaker 1: I still looked at the remaining shapes in the package,
[1:47] Speaker 1: thinking of how they could have been used in a meal.
[1:50] Speaker 1: Waste not, want not is an old saying that has
[1:53] Speaker 1: become somewhat of a cliche, but I could not help
[1:57] Speaker 1: thinking of what my grandmother and mother used to say
[2:00] Speaker 1: while I tossed the expired eggs into the trash. Usually,
[2:03] Speaker 1: I make it a habit to utilize what we have,
[2:06] Speaker 1: knowing how difficult it can be to have enough. This time,
[2:10] Speaker 1: the date had crept up on me. Images of families
[2:13] Speaker 1: in my town and around the world flashed in my mind.
[2:17] Speaker 1: So many people on Earth, individuals who are made in
[2:20] Speaker 1: God's image, struggled to obtain sufficient food, and yet here
[2:25] Speaker 1: I was throwing away surplus and had expired guil nagged
[2:29] Speaker 1: me as I cooked dinner. Scripture tells us that those
[2:33] Speaker 1: who have more than enough have a responsibility to share
[2:36] Speaker 1: what they have with those in need. John the Baptist
[2:40] Speaker 1: included this instruction when he addressed the crowds who came
[2:43] Speaker 1: to him seeking baptism. True repentance leads to transformation and character,
[2:49] Speaker 1: and in effect action, the Lord had already revealed this
[2:53] Speaker 1: principle to his people Israel, such as in the command
[2:57] Speaker 1: to love one's neighbor, not taking a person since cloak
[3:00] Speaker 1: as a pledge, or refraining from harvesting a field a
[3:03] Speaker 1: second time were practical applications of this command. Likewise, in
[3:09] Speaker 1: the early Church, Christ followers regularly use their resources to
[3:13] Speaker 1: bless those around them. They shared what they had with
[3:17] Speaker 1: those in need. Such generosity came from the Holy Spirit's
[3:21] Speaker 1: work as he produced the spiritual fruit of love and
[3:25] Speaker 1: kindness in their lives. Since they had been washed and
[3:28] Speaker 1: made new by the Spirit, the priorities of their lives
[3:31] Speaker 1: looked different from what they had been before they knew Jesus,
[3:35] Speaker 1: they had been transformed. For Christ followers today, the same
[3:40] Speaker 1: call remains. We are to act justly and to love mercy,
[3:45] Speaker 1: and to walk humbly with your God. Wisely using what
[3:49] Speaker 1: we have to help others is a natural overflow of
[3:52] Speaker 1: our relationship with the Lord. We will care for the
[3:56] Speaker 1: poor and feed the hungry as if we were directly
[3:59] Speaker 1: caring for ours. So let us give thanks for the
[4:02] Speaker 1: resources we have, whether great or small, And if we
[4:06] Speaker 1: already have enough to meet our basic needs, let us
[4:10] Speaker 1: not waste what we have, but rather find ways to
[4:13] Speaker 1: share with others. In doing so, we honor the one
[4:17] Speaker 1: who has given us more than we could ever imagine
[4:20] Speaker 1: or deserve. Let's pray, Lord, forgive me for the times
[4:25] Speaker 1: I have wasted my resources. I live in a society
[4:28] Speaker 1: that values gaining more and often more than I need,
[4:32] Speaker 1: while at the same time promoting wastefulness. As I lean
[4:36] Speaker 1: into my relationship with you, help me to reorient my
[4:39] Speaker 1: priorities around what you care about. Justice, mercy, compassion, love
[4:45] Speaker 1: and kindness. Produce in me by your Holy Spirit, the
[4:49] Speaker 1: actions that come from faith. Let me live with contentment,
[4:53] Speaker 1: being thankful for the necessities you provide. Let me live
[4:57] Speaker 1: with open hands and an open heart, so that I
[5:00] Speaker 1: am quick to think of others when I utilize my resources.
[5:04] Speaker 1: Guide me to how I might give from any area
[5:07] Speaker 1: of surplus to bless those in need and in every circumstance.
[5:12] Speaker 1: And I care for others as if I were directly
[5:14] Speaker 1: serving You, my Savior and your name, Jesus, I pray Amen.
