Psalm 104 opens and closes with the same three words — Praise the Lord — and in between, it builds like a rising crescendo of awe, moving through the wonders of creation until it arrives at verse 19 with a brief but breathtaking observation: He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down. No human effort required. No maintenance on our part. The celestial caretaking is entirely God's, and it has been functioning in perfect balance since the fourth day of creation. What is astonishing is not only that God designed the sun and moon to do this work, but that they have been doing it faithfully ever since — tracking the hours, marking the seasons, transforming in tandem with the world they illuminate. We plan our holidays, harvests, planting schedules, and daily rhythms around what the sun and moon do for us. We survive by the shifts they govern. And if we live somewhere that changes with the seasons, we are treated to foliage trading greens for golds and reds, ice-covered trees that resemble glass, and temperatures that rise and fall in God's perfect timing. Every sunrise is a freely given promise of His power and provision. Every moonrise reflects His majesty and peace. All of this happening continuously, reliably, and beautifully — without any of our involvement or ability. That is not a small thing to be grateful for. It is a daily, seasonal, lifelong reason to look up and praise the God who holds all of it in perfect balance. Bible Verse "He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down." — Psalm 104:19, NIV Ponder Today • The sun and moon are eternally doing precisely what God intended. They have never drifted from their assignment, never needed repair, and never required our assistance. The faithfulness of creation is a daily testimony to the faithfulness of its Creator. • We survive by what God holds in balance without our involvement. Morning, evening, daylight, and moonlight are not conveniences — they are gifts we literally depend on for life. Recognizing that dependence is a form of worship. • Psalm 104 is an invitation to cultivate gratitude for nature's wonders. When we slow down enough to actually observe what God has made — the changing colors, the shifting moon, the reliable sunrise — awe and thankfulness are the natural result. • Every season is an opportunity to behold God and believe His promises. Each seasonal change is evidence that God does what He says He will do and is who He says He is. Creation is His most consistent and universal form of communication. • Praise is the appropriate and beautiful response to what God has made. Psalm 104 begins and ends with praise — not as a religious obligation, but as the only adequate response to a God who holds the sun, moon, planets, seas, and mountains in perfect, perpetual balance. A Prayer for You Today Dear God, thank You so much for the gift of seasons. Wherever we go in the world, we can find a place where You are showing us the splendor and purpose of Your sun and moon. May we be reminded today, and tonight, that You are always at work, balancing Your entire creation and ensuring the sun and moon know when to do the supernatural work You assigned to them. Thank You for the gift of sunrise, given freely as a promise of Your power and provision. Thank You for the moon's reflection that shines forth Your majesty and peace. We are undone by what You provide without any of our involvement or ability. In every season, may we repeat the words of Psalm 104: Praise the Lord, my soul. Praise the Lord. Amen. Want More? [0:13] Speaker 1: Thank you for listening to Your Daily Prayer, where we
[0:15] Speaker 1: help you find the words you need to connect to
[0:18] Speaker 1: your Father in Heaven. No matter what's happening in your
[0:20] Speaker 1: life today, you can trust that God wants to hear
[0:23] Speaker 1: from you. Right after this short word from our sponsors,
[0:27] Speaker 1: we'll pray through today's prayer of gratitude for the gift
[0:30] Speaker 1: of seasons. A Prayer of Gratitude for the Gift of
[0:50] Speaker 1: Seasons Written and read by Leah Gerard He made the
[0:56] Speaker 1: moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when
[0:59] Speaker 1: to go down. Psalm 104, 19. Psalm 104 is a
[1:06] Speaker 1: beautiful work of art, whether you read it as a
[1:08] Speaker 1: spiritual poem or a song from the heart. It's a
[1:12] Speaker 1: passionate pouring out of awe and appreciation for God's marvelous
[1:17] Speaker 1: ability to generate and balance everything. Opening and closing with
[1:24] Speaker 1: the three words, praise the Lord, This ancient hymn reads
[1:28] Speaker 1: like a rising crescendo and stirs up reverence in my soul.
[1:33] Speaker 1: Biblical scholars propose that the author's unknown, however, some suggest
[1:37] Speaker 1: that the author's poetic, lyrical style is reminiscent of David
[1:41] Speaker 1: or Solomon. The psalm is described by theologians as a
[1:46] Speaker 1: sacred retelling of God's creation story in Genesis. Its main
[1:51] Speaker 1: theme is thankfulness for all that God has made. savoring it,
[1:57] Speaker 1: can help cultivate a heart of gratitude, especially for nature's wonders.
[2:03] Speaker 1: By the time we reach verse 19, we're shown the
[2:07] Speaker 1: glory of God's work on the fourth day of creation
[2:09] Speaker 1: as described here in Genesis 1.14. And God said, let
[2:14] Speaker 1: there be lights in the vault of the sky to
[2:16] Speaker 1: separate the day from the night, and let them serve
[2:19] Speaker 1: as signs to mark sacred times and days and years.
[2:25] Speaker 1: In a similar way, Psalm 104 and 19 says that
[2:30] Speaker 1: God made the moon to mark the seasons and that
[2:34] Speaker 1: the sun knows when to go down. It's a brief
[2:39] Speaker 1: but important element of this psalm because it showcases how
[2:43] Speaker 1: the moon and sun are God's design as a heavenly
[2:47] Speaker 1: duo and they are eternally doing precisely what God intended.
[2:52] Speaker 1: How astonishing is it that we do absolutely none of
[2:57] Speaker 1: this celestial caretaking. Yet, we're drawn to and guided by
[3:03] Speaker 1: their movement, shapes, and light. We plan our holidays, harvests, plantings,
[3:09] Speaker 1: and daily activities around what the sun and moon do
[3:13] Speaker 1: for us in every season. Morning, evening, daylight, and moonlight
[3:18] Speaker 1: are shifts we not only enjoy but literally survive by.
[3:24] Speaker 1: And if we live in a place on the globe
[3:26] Speaker 1: where colors and temperatures change with the seasons, we get
[3:30] Speaker 1: to see how the moon and sun transform in tandem
[3:33] Speaker 1: with the seasons. The moon reflects varying amounts of sunlight
[3:37] Speaker 1: as each month unfolds, revealing a portion of itself that
[3:41] Speaker 1: constantly changes shape. The sun rises and lowers, tracking the
[3:46] Speaker 1: hours of each day. Foliage may trade greens for golds
[3:51] Speaker 1: and reds and Ice-covered trees can resemble glass. And all
[3:56] Speaker 1: around us, depending on where we live, the temperature rises
[3:59] Speaker 1: and falls in God's perfect timing. How amazing that God
[4:07] Speaker 1: communicates His tender and perpetual care in such clear, reliable,
[4:13] Speaker 1: and picturesque ways. He holds the sun and moon in
[4:18] Speaker 1: perfect balance while our planet rotates and Every living thing
[4:23] Speaker 1: cycles through phases according to His plan. When you take
[4:28] Speaker 1: time to consider the sun, moon, planets, seas, mountains, forests,
[4:34] Speaker 1: and beyond, it becomes clear that we are witnessing divine
[4:38] Speaker 1: miracles everywhere. Every day, every night, and in every season,
[4:44] Speaker 1: we can look up, behold, and believe that God does
[4:51] Speaker 1: something what he says he will, and is who he
[4:56] Speaker 1: says he is. Let's pray. Dear God, thank you so
[5:02] Speaker 1: much for the gift of seasons. Wherever we go in
[5:05] Speaker 1: the world, we can find a place where you're showing
[5:07] Speaker 1: us the splendor and purpose of your sun and moon.
[5:11] Speaker 1: Whether we live in or travel to cold places to
[5:14] Speaker 1: witness the aurora borealis or warm places to marvel at
[5:18] Speaker 1: the length of days, We're blessed by your celestial power
[5:23] Speaker 1: and holiness. May we be reminded today and tonight that
[5:27] Speaker 1: you're always at work balancing your entire creation, ensuring that
[5:32] Speaker 1: the sun and the moon know when to do the
[5:35] Speaker 1: supernatural work you assign to them. Thank you for the
[5:39] Speaker 1: gift of sunrise given freely as a promise of your
[5:43] Speaker 1: power and provision. And thank you for the moon's reflection
[5:47] Speaker 1: that shines forth your majesty and peace. I'm undone by
[5:53] Speaker 1: what you provide without any of my involvement or ability.
[5:58] Speaker 1: What a blessing to repeat these words from the end
[6:01] Speaker 1: of Psalm 104 in every season. Praise the Lord, my soul.
[6:07] Speaker 1: Praise the Lord. Amen. Amen. Your daily prayer is a
