Have you ever read a passage of Scripture and felt completely lost? The idea that the Bible is written at a level an elementary-age child can comprehend may be true of its central message — that God loves us and has provided a way back to Himself through Jesus — but anyone who has worked through the book of Leviticus, wrestled with apocalyptic prophecy, or landed in an unfamiliar epistle knows that some passages require more than a quiet moment and good intentions. They require community. The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch is not often cited as a key discipleship text, but it captures something essential about how God designed His Word to be understood. An Ethiopian official, returning from worship in Jerusalem, was reading Isaiah 53 aloud — a Messianic passage he genuinely could not interpret without help. Philip, prompted by the Spirit, approached him and asked if he understood what he was reading. The eunuch's response is honest and beautiful: how can I, unless someone explains it to me? That willingness to ask opened the door to a conversation that led to his salvation and baptism. Spiritual knowledge is transferable. God's Word is meant to be studied in community. And whether we are new to the faith and need someone to explain what we are reading, or we are seasoned believers with something to give, every one of us has a role to play in helping others understand the timeless truths of Scripture. Today's Bible Verse "How can I," he said, "unless someone explains to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him." — Acts 8:31, NIV Ponder Today • There is no shame in asking for help understanding Scripture. The Ethiopian eunuch was a man of significant position and faith, and he openly admitted he needed someone to explain what he was reading. That honesty opened the door to life-changing truth. • Spiritual knowledge is transferable — and sharing it is a privilege. God has gifted men and women throughout the body of Christ with the ability to rightly interpret and unpack Scripture. Believers with mature faith are called to invest that knowledge in others (Titus 2:3-4; Ephesians 4:12-13). • God's Word is designed to be studied in community. Making disciples involves active, engaged Bible study together. Commentaries, sermons, conversations with other believers, and corporate worship are all legitimate and valuable tools for growing in understanding. • Listen when the Holy Spirit prompts you to come alongside someone. Philip could have kept walking. Instead, he obeyed the Spirit's nudge, asked a simple question, and participated in one of the most significant evangelistic encounters recorded in Acts. • God's Word never returns empty. Not every conversation will produce instant, visible results the way Philip's did. But Isaiah 55:11 assures us that what God's Word goes out to accomplish, it will accomplish — in His timing and according to His purpose. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, I am so grateful for the gift of the body of believers. How wonderful to know that when I accepted Christ, I was adopted into a family of faith. Help me embrace the gifts of community Bible study, corporate worship, and personal Scripture reading. When I have questions or am wrestling with the text, I ask that the Holy Spirit guide and direct me to proper understanding and application. And when I see others who need support, may I come alongside them and impart biblical wisdom. Help us to humbly serve one another through teaching, discipleship, service, and love. In Jesus' name, Amen. Don't Miss an Episode If today's prayer stirred a desire to go deeper in God's Word alongside other believers, we'd love to stay connected. [0:18] Speaker 1: need to connect with your Father in Heaven. No matter
[0:22] Speaker 1: what is going on in your life today, you can
[0:24] Speaker 1: trust that God wants to hear from you. Right after
[0:27] Speaker 1: this short word from our sponsor, you will pray for
[0:30] Speaker 1: today's prayer to embrace the gift of community Bible study Together.
[0:52] Speaker 1: A Prayer to Embrace the Gift of community Bible Study
[0:56] Speaker 1: written by Laura Bailey, read by Carrie. IIK, how can I,
[1:03] Speaker 1: he said, unless someone explains to me. So he invited
[1:07] Speaker 1: Philip to come up and sit with him, Acts eight,
[1:11] Speaker 1: verse thirty one. Have you ever read a passage of
[1:15] Speaker 1: scripture and felt completely lost? I once read that the
[1:20] Speaker 1: Bible is written at a level that an elementary age
[1:23] Speaker 1: child could read and comprehend. If that's the case, then
[1:27] Speaker 1: perhaps I need to head back to grade school. I
[1:30] Speaker 1: believe the statement was intended to convey that God's word
[1:33] Speaker 1: is available and applicable to children and adults alike. The
[1:37] Speaker 1: message is for everyone at all times. And while there
[1:40] Speaker 1: are passages of Scripture that are clear, easily digested, and
[1:45] Speaker 1: share a clear takeaway, but what about the other parts
[1:48] Speaker 1: books of the Bible, which passages are more difficult to comprehend, interpret,
[1:54] Speaker 1: and relate to our lives. One of the best resources
[1:58] Speaker 1: is Other Christians. The story of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch,
[2:03] Speaker 1: though not often cited as a key text on discipleship,
[2:06] Speaker 1: beautifully illustrates the practice of coming alongside someone to deepen
[2:11] Speaker 1: their understanding of scripture. Philip, a deacon and evangelist, was
[2:15] Speaker 1: returning to Jerusalem when an angel redirected him toward Gaza.
[2:20] Speaker 1: There he met an Ethiopian official returning from worship in Jerusalem.
[2:25] Speaker 1: Prompted by the spirit, Philip approached him. The Ethiopian was
[2:29] Speaker 1: reading Isaiah fifty three aloud, a common practice at the time,
[2:33] Speaker 1: allowing Philip to recognize it and offer to explain it.
[2:38] Speaker 1: Philip asked the Ethiopian eunuch if he understood what he
[2:42] Speaker 1: was reading. Though it may sound rude to modern ears,
[2:46] Speaker 1: Philip's question came from genuine concern. The Unich worshiped God
[2:51] Speaker 1: and New Judaism, but likely lacked a full grasp of
[2:54] Speaker 1: the Hebrew scriptures, especially Messianic cossages, because he was reading
[3:00] Speaker 1: a Greek translation and lacked the Jewish cultural background. In
[3:05] Speaker 1: today's terms, it would be like reading an older Bible translation.
[3:09] Speaker 1: The text could be understood, but was harder to interpret
[3:12] Speaker 1: without support. The Eunuch is eager to accept Philip's help
[3:16] Speaker 1: and says in Acts eight thirty one, how can I,
[3:20] Speaker 1: he said, unless someone explains to me. So he invited
[3:24] Speaker 1: Philip to come up and sit with him. We can
[3:27] Speaker 1: take away a few things from this interaction. First, the
[3:31] Speaker 1: importance of listening then acting when the Holy Spirit speaks
[3:35] Speaker 1: to our hearts. Second, spiritual knowledge is transferable. It is
[3:40] Speaker 1: a privilege to share God's Word with others. Believers with
[3:44] Speaker 1: the mature faith are commanded to support and teach others
[3:47] Speaker 1: in the faith. Third, God's Word is meant to be
[3:51] Speaker 1: studied in community. Part of making disciples is engaging in
[3:55] Speaker 1: active Bible study together. Only God's word is infallible without error,
[4:01] Speaker 1: and there is a chance of error in human teaching. Still,
[4:05] Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit has gifted numerous men and women with
[4:08] Speaker 1: the ability to rightly interpret and unpacked scripture, helping others
[4:13] Speaker 1: grow in biblical knowledge. If you are new to the faith,
[4:18] Speaker 1: or if you have a background in Christianity but are
[4:21] Speaker 1: new to studying the Bible. There's no shame in asking
[4:24] Speaker 1: for help to understand difficult passages of Scripture. Utilizing tools,
[4:30] Speaker 1: and supplementing your Bible reading with commentaries, sermons, and conversations
[4:35] Speaker 1: with other Christians are all part of growing in your
[4:38] Speaker 1: understanding of God's word, and if you are a more
[4:42] Speaker 1: seasoned to Christ follower, look for opportunities to share what
[4:46] Speaker 1: God has taught you, the tools you've used to understand scripture,
[4:50] Speaker 1: and invest in teaching someone how to study and apply
[4:54] Speaker 1: God's timeless truths to their lives. As a result of
[4:58] Speaker 1: Philip taking the time to go through Isaiah fifty three,
[5:02] Speaker 1: the eunuch accepts Christ and then gets baptized. While Philip
[5:06] Speaker 1: saw the immediate eternal impact that God's word had on
[5:10] Speaker 1: this man's life. Not all of your interactions will produce
[5:14] Speaker 1: instant results. But let us hold to the truth the
[5:17] Speaker 1: prophet encourages in isaiaht Fifty five to eleven. So is
[5:21] Speaker 1: my word that goes out from my mouth, It will
[5:24] Speaker 1: not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I
[5:27] Speaker 1: desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
[5:31] Speaker 1: Let's pray Heavenly Father, I am so grateful for the
[5:35] Speaker 1: gift of the body of believers. How wonderful to know
[5:39] Speaker 1: that I am not only saved for all eternity, but
[5:42] Speaker 1: was adopted into a family of believers when I accepted Christ.
[5:47] Speaker 1: Help me embrace the gifts of community Bible study, corporate worship,
[5:51] Speaker 1: and personal Bible study. Lord, When I have questions where
[5:55] Speaker 1: I'm wrestling with the text, I ask that the Holy
[5:58] Speaker 1: Spirit guide and direct me to proper understanding and application.
[6:02] Speaker 1: When I see others who need support, may I come
[6:05] Speaker 1: alongside them and impart biblical wisdom. Please help us to
[6:09] Speaker 1: humbly serve others through teaching, discipleship, service, and love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
