The beginning of 2022 felt like everything was finally falling into place — a writing job that had only been a dream, a church community, a relationship after years of waiting. And then, by fall of that same year, all of it was gone. The job ended. The relationship ended. The bottom fell out. And the honest, painful question surfaced: why would God allow these things only to take them away? What followed was a season of barely making it financially, praying over every bill, watching God provide sometimes within hours of the need. And in the middle of that stripped-down season, something unexpected happened: God revealed the entitlement and idols that had quietly taken root. The hope that should have been in God alone had been quietly relocated — into a job, into a relationship, into circumstances that felt like evidence of His blessing. God was allowing a life to be wrecked in order to save it. Philippians 2:14 calls us to do all things without complaining and disputing — but that kind of heart is not manufactured through willpower. It is cultivated through the slow, deliberate practice of giving thanks for everything: every freelance assignment that came in, every moment with a friend, every second with the Savior. A playlist created during that season became a monument to God’s kindness and faithfulness. The question that changed the frame of the whole season was a simple one: what do I want to remember about this season when I look back on it? The answer was worship and thanksgiving. That answer became a choice, and the choice became a reality. Bible Verse “Do all things without complaining and disputing.” — Philippians 2:14, NKJV Ponder Today • God sometimes allows a life to be wrecked in order to save it. What feels like loss or harsh removal may actually be God clearing out what was quietly displacing Him — entitlement, pride, misplaced hope — before it did deeper damage. • Misplaced hope is one of the most common and least recognizable forms of idolatry. When our hope quietly relocates from God into circumstances — a job, a relationship, a season going well — we have drifted without necessarily noticing. Loss has a way of revealing what was actually holding us up. • Gratitude is cultivated through practice, not feeling. Giving thanks for every freelance job, every moment with a friend, every second with God — these deliberate acts of acknowledgment over time build the grateful heart that Philippians 2:14 assumes. • The question “what do I want to remember about this season?” is a reorienting one. Deciding in the middle of a hard season what story we want to tell when we look back on it gives us agency over our posture — and can shift the whole experience from endurance into worship. • Everything we have is a gift — we did nothing to deserve any of it. That is not a discouraging thought. It is a freeing one. When we hold our lives as belonging to God rather than earned by us, the ground beneath our gratitude becomes unshakable. A Prayer for You Today Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being a good Father. Thank You for everything You have allowed us to have and to hold. Thank You for the breath in our lungs and the beats in our hearts. Thank You for loving us, for dying for us, and for being with us in the good times and the bad without ever forsaking us. Lord, we do not deserve to even speak to You, yet You say You bend Your ear to listen. Please give us hearts of worship and thanksgiving. Help the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing to You. We love You. Please make us more like You. Amen. [0:59] Speaker 1: Philippians 2.14 The beginning of 2022 was going to be
[1:05] Speaker 1: my year. I had recently landed a writing job that
[1:08] Speaker 1: I'd only dreamed of, found a church community, and started
[1:11] Speaker 1: dating after years of waiting. Then in the fall of
[1:15] Speaker 1: that same year, The bottom fell out. I was let
[1:19] Speaker 1: go from my job and my relationship ended. I felt crushed, hurt,
[1:24] Speaker 1: and confused. Why would God allow these things only to
[1:29] Speaker 1: take them away? It felt harsh. During that time, I
[1:34] Speaker 1: started freelancing. I was barely making it. I remember praying
[1:38] Speaker 1: for nearly every bill. Lord, you have to provide. I
[1:43] Speaker 1: need your help to trust you. And He faithfully met
[1:47] Speaker 1: every need. Sometimes the provision arrived within hours of me
[1:51] Speaker 1: needing it. In the midst of the hardship, the Lord
[1:55] Speaker 1: revealed the entitlement and idols in my heart. Had the
[2:00] Speaker 1: relationship continued, the entitlement and pride in my heart would
[2:03] Speaker 1: have destroyed it. I felt I deserved these things. God
[2:09] Speaker 1: was actually allowing my life to be wrecked in order
[2:13] Speaker 1: to save it. My hope was in my circumstances, a
[2:18] Speaker 1: job and a relationship. It wasn't in the Lord. It
[2:23] Speaker 1: felt like the Lord halted my life. I had to
[2:27] Speaker 1: take one day at a time regarding work and the
[2:30] Speaker 1: healing that needed to happen in my heart. Then a
[2:33] Speaker 1: thought came to mind. What do I remember about this
[2:37] Speaker 1: season when I look back on it? I thought about
[2:41] Speaker 1: it for a while. I realized... I wanted to remember
[2:45] Speaker 1: that it was a season of worship and thanksgiving. I
[2:49] Speaker 1: created a playlist of worship songs during that season, and
[2:53] Speaker 1: to this day it reminds me of God's kindness and faithfulness.
[2:57] Speaker 1: The Lord taught me to give thanks for everything, every
[3:01] Speaker 1: freelance job that came in, every time I got to
[3:04] Speaker 1: connect with friends, every moment I got to spend with
[3:07] Speaker 1: my family, and every second I got to spend with
[3:10] Speaker 1: my Savior. It reminded me that Everything I have is
[3:16] Speaker 1: a gift from Him. I did nothing to deserve it.
[3:20] Speaker 1: He can take it away at any time. My life
[3:24] Speaker 1: is His, and He can do as He sees fit.
[3:27] Speaker 1: This life is not about me. It's about Him, and
[3:30] Speaker 1: He deserves all the praise, honor, glory, and gratitude. Let's pray.
[3:41] Speaker 1: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for being a good father.
[3:45] Speaker 1: Thank you for being everything you've allowed us to have
[3:48] Speaker 1: and to hold. Thank you for the breath in our
[3:51] Speaker 1: lungs and the beats in our hearts. Thank you for
[3:53] Speaker 1: loving us. Thank you for dying for us. Thank you
[3:58] Speaker 1: for being with us in the good times and the
[4:01] Speaker 1: bad and for never forsaking us. Lord, we don't deserve
[4:05] Speaker 1: to even speak to you, yet you say you bend
[4:08] Speaker 1: your ear to listen. Father, please give us hearts of
[4:12] Speaker 1: worship and thanksgiving. Help the words of our mouth and
[4:17] Speaker 1: the meditation of our hearts be pleasing to you. We
[4:20] Speaker 1: love you. Please make us more like you. Amen. Your
