Jochebed, the mother of Moses, understood what it means to do everything you possibly can for a child and then face the moment when your hands must let go. She waterproofed the basket with tar and pitch. She tested it carefully. She waded into the river as far as she could. And then she had to release her son into the water where Pharaoh was drowning baby boys. She did her part with extraordinary care, and then she had to trust God with what she could not control. What held Moses was not the basket. He was in the palm of God's hand. The same is true for every child being released into a new season — whether it is a wedding, a dorm room, a first apartment, or a drift from faith that feels like the most frightening river of all. God had your child before you did, and He holds them long after they leave your house. He never takes His eyes off the water. The basket was always His to carry. Today's Bible Verse "But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile." — Exodus 2:3, NIV Ponder Today • Preparation is your part — the river is God's. Jochebed did everything within her power to protect Moses before placing him in the water. We are called to do the same for our children. And then, like her, we must take our hands off the basket. • What held Moses was not the basket — it was the palm of God. The future of your child does not rest on whether you said or did enough. God is the One holding and carrying what you release to Him. • The question "was it enough?" is one God is ready to receive. Bringing that honest fear to Him in prayer is not a sign of weak parenting or weak faith. It is the right response to a season that asks more of us than we feel able to give. • God had your child before you did. His love for your son or daughter is not dependent on your success as a parent, and it is not limited by your failures. He watched over baby Moses in Pharaoh's river, and He is watching over your child right now. • This season is not the last. Releasing a child into a new chapter is one of the hardest things a parent faces, but it is not the end of the story — for them or for you. God never takes His eyes off His children, and He never takes His eyes off the parents who trust Him with what they cannot follow. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, I want to give You the boxes in the basement. While packing up a life to be in a place where I will not be is the challenge, I need You to quiet the questions. Did I do enough to help my child, the one You gave me, for all the days ahead? No, but I give it all to You. Forgive me for living like my child's future rests in my hands instead of Yours. You watch the river. You had my child before I did, and You hold them long after they leave my house. Help me do what Jochebed did and take my hands off the basket. Steady my heart when letting go feels like far too much, and remind me that You never take Your eyes off the water. I trust You with what I cannot follow. In Jesus' name, Amen. [1:44] Speaker 2: we'll pray through today's prayer for the basket season of
[1:47] Speaker 2: an adult child. A Prayer for the Basket Season of
[2:08] Speaker 2: an Adult Child. Written by Rachel Bojo. Read by Carrie Eichberger.
[2:16] Speaker 2: But when she could hide him no longer, she got
[2:18] Speaker 2: a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar
[2:22] Speaker 2: and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and
[2:24] Speaker 2: put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
[2:28] Speaker 2: Exodus 2 verse 3. Each time I've gone down to
[2:33] Speaker 2: the basement in the last couple of months, There are
[2:35] Speaker 2: more boxes. Some were half-packed and others taped tightly. My
[2:40] Speaker 2: daughter's life is being sorted into cardboard as she prepares
[2:44] Speaker 2: to marry the man of her dreams. There's kitchen stuff
[2:47] Speaker 2: and wedding gifts. The piles keep growing, and each one
[2:51] Speaker 2: seems to shout at me, this is really happening. Although
[2:56] Speaker 2: my teens and adult kids all do their own laundry,
[2:59] Speaker 2: I sometimes choose to pull it from the dryer and
[3:02] Speaker 2: fold it, just to have the luxury once more. I've
[3:06] Speaker 2: always prayed over laundry, usually for the ones whose clothing
[3:09] Speaker 2: I'm folding. It feels like sacred work. But as I fold,
[3:14] Speaker 2: a question rises from the deepest places in my heart.
[3:18] Speaker 2: What is enough? All that her father and I tried
[3:22] Speaker 2: to teach her, did we prepare her for a life
[3:25] Speaker 2: that we won't be standing in the middle of anymore?
[3:27] Speaker 2: I find myself rehearsing things I want to remember or
[3:31] Speaker 2: lessons I hope she caught on to. There are ordinary
[3:34] Speaker 2: days that we don't get back to do over. The
[3:38] Speaker 2: boxes seem to mock these thoughts. If you've raised a
[3:42] Speaker 2: child to the point of leaving the nest, you know
[3:45] Speaker 2: what I'm talking about. Whether it's a wedding, a dorm room,
[3:49] Speaker 2: or a first apartment, pain is strange. Maybe the move
[3:53] Speaker 2: is a child who is drifting from the faith you
[3:55] Speaker 2: spent years cultivating. The grief you are grieving isn't from
[4:00] Speaker 2: a move across town or to another state, but a
[4:03] Speaker 2: move much bigger miles away from God. In Exodus 2, Jochebed,
[4:10] Speaker 2: the mother of Joseph, was forced to leave a baby
[4:13] Speaker 2: she could not keep safe. She had built a boat basket,
[4:17] Speaker 2: making sure that it would float. Can you imagine the
[4:20] Speaker 2: care she took to waterproof this boat for the baby
[4:24] Speaker 2: whose life had already been spared by the midwife? But
[4:27] Speaker 2: after making the boat and carefully placing her little one
[4:31] Speaker 2: in it, she had to do something that caused me
[4:33] Speaker 2: to pause and think. She had to let go of
[4:37] Speaker 2: the basket. I'm guessing that her hands just might have
[4:41] Speaker 2: been shaking as she did this. Maybe she waded into
[4:44] Speaker 2: the river as far as she could before letting go.
[4:47] Speaker 2: We don't know if she lost sleep the night before,
[4:50] Speaker 2: but I'm guessing she did. She placed her son in
[4:53] Speaker 2: the river where Fira was placing all the baby boys.
[4:57] Speaker 2: Only hers was on top of the water. I imagine
[5:02] Speaker 2: Jacobette tested her little basket boat. She probably threw some
[5:06] Speaker 2: cabbage heads into it to test its weight in the
[5:08] Speaker 2: water before entrusting it to hold her baby. My point
[5:12] Speaker 2: is that she prepared and did her part, but she
[5:16] Speaker 2: did have to let go. Some of us know the
[5:19] Speaker 2: Bible story, and we know that it wasn't the basket
[5:22] Speaker 2: that truly held Moses. He was in the palm of
[5:26] Speaker 2: God's hand. It's easy to think that our children in
[5:30] Speaker 2: their future are riding on whether or not we did
[5:34] Speaker 2: enough or said enough but God is the one holding
[5:37] Speaker 2: and carrying the basket. If your child is in a
[5:41] Speaker 2: river that scares you right now, know that the same
[5:44] Speaker 2: God who watched over baby Moses is watching over your baby.
[5:50] Speaker 2: This season is not the last, but you did what
[5:54] Speaker 2: you could, and now it's time to take your hands
[5:57] Speaker 2: off the basket. Your God never takes His eyes off
[6:01] Speaker 2: His children. He is worthy of our trust. Let's pray.
[6:07] Speaker 2: Heavenly Father, I want to give you the boxes in
[6:10] Speaker 2: the basement. While packing up a life to be in
[6:13] Speaker 2: a place where I won't be is the challenge, I
[6:17] Speaker 2: need you to hush the questions. Did I do enough
[6:20] Speaker 2: to help my child, the one you gave me, for
[6:23] Speaker 2: all the days ahead? No, but I give it all
[6:27] Speaker 2: to you. Forgive me for living like my child's future
[6:31] Speaker 2: rests in my hands instead of yours. I have a
[6:35] Speaker 2: tendency to act like the basket is all mine, but
[6:39] Speaker 2: you watch the river. You had my child before I did,
[6:44] Speaker 2: and you hold them long after they leave my house.
[6:47] Speaker 2: Help me do what Jaka Bed did and take my
[6:51] Speaker 2: hands off the basket. Please steady my heart when letting
[6:55] Speaker 2: go feels far too much, or remind me that you
[6:59] Speaker 2: never take your eyes off the water. I trust you
[7:03] Speaker 2: with what I cannot follow. In Jesus' name, amen. Don't
[7:09] Speaker 2: miss this if you're still praying and starting to wonder
