In the second hour, Dave Softy Mahler is joined by Greg Lewis and Mario Bailey for the Husky Honks as the guys look back at the win over Eastern Washington, including the little they learned from the blowout, facing Minnesota next and the weight of their punch, the problematic penalties on defense and new reputation, plus the UW wide receivers. [0:25] Speaker 1: and your host, Dave Socky Muller.
[0:28] Speaker 2: Alright, here we go on a busy Tuesday afternoon. I
[0:30] Speaker 2: cannot think of a better way to spend the 4
[0:32] Speaker 2: o'clock hour than with my pals Greg Lewis and Mario Bailey.
[0:35] Speaker 3: And I mean that.
[0:36] Speaker 2: I wake up every day saying, you know what? I
[0:38] Speaker 2: enjoy my life. I think I got a pretty good
[0:40] Speaker 2: thing going here.
[0:40] Speaker 3: But you know what?
[0:42] Speaker 2: If I can get more Mario and more Greg, I
[0:44] Speaker 2: would just be that much happier.
[0:46] Speaker 3: And here they are to make my day even brighter.
[0:49] Speaker 3: How are you guys? We must be getting a pay
[0:51] Speaker 3: reduction or something. I got bad news for both of you.
[0:54] Speaker 3: You both got to see the boss when the show's over,
[0:56] Speaker 3: by the way. Actually, it's good.
[0:58] Speaker 2: To see your face, by the way. Thanks for showing
[1:01] Speaker 2: up on Saturday night, pal. The one postgame this guy
[1:06] Speaker 2: misses against Eastern.
[1:07] Speaker 3: He decides to mail it in for the Eastern game.
[1:10] Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, buddy.
[1:11] Speaker 4: No, that's two in a row.
[1:14] Speaker 3: That is two in a row. Hey, man, stop counting.
[1:17] Speaker 3: I mean, I have to work harder. Do you?
[1:20] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:20] Speaker 3: I think softy works hard.
[1:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
[1:23] Speaker 3: He did put on his world-winning voice. Listen, it wasn't
[1:26] Speaker 3: my fault, man. I had to work, man. That's all, man.
[1:29] Speaker 3: Pay me my money, man.
[1:30] Speaker 5: Pay me.
[1:30] Speaker 2: Hey, are you going to be there Saturday, though, at
[1:32] Speaker 2: midnight for the Minnesota game?
[1:34] Speaker 6: I'll be there so you know I'm grinding.
[1:36] Speaker 3: I would say that Saturday night is the— Midnight? Two
[1:38] Speaker 3: in the morning?
[1:38] Speaker 2: Well, I was going to say Sunday morning we're doing
[1:40] Speaker 2: the postgame show. Well, let's go back and talk about
[1:43] Speaker 2: this game on Saturday versus Easter. And big thanks again
[1:46] Speaker 2: to our friends at— Frostbrood Coors Light as cold as
[1:49] Speaker 2: the Rockies. Did we learn anything, guys, about this team
[1:52] Speaker 2: from the Eastern game on Saturday night? Or do you
[1:55] Speaker 2: feel like it didn't move the needle much for you
[1:57] Speaker 2: either way?
[1:58] Speaker 4: I don't think we learned anything, no. But I do
[2:00] Speaker 4: think we accomplished some things. I think those are two
[2:03] Speaker 4: very distinct things.
[2:04] Speaker 3: Tell us about that.
[2:05] Speaker 4: I think we accomplished getting some confidence back in the
[2:08] Speaker 4: hands of some guys, pun intended, like Desmond Roebuck, who
[2:11] Speaker 4: had dropped two passes the week before. Not only did
[2:14] Speaker 4: he catch everything that was thrown his way, I think
[2:17] Speaker 4: we were nine for nine on his targets. And he
[2:20] Speaker 4: had over 100 yards. He had some big plays in
[2:23] Speaker 4: that football game. So I think that gives him a
[2:25] Speaker 4: little confidence back, right? I also saw what I think
[2:30] Speaker 4: can be considered the difference between the two running backs.
[2:33] Speaker 4: And I think you can look at what we saw.
[2:36] Speaker 4: Even though there's a small sample size, Bonner looks like
[2:38] Speaker 4: the better of the two running backs. So you can
[2:40] Speaker 4: go in and start game planning now, What runs does
[2:44] Speaker 4: he do best? How does he like to get the ball?
[2:46] Speaker 3: Is it down?
[2:47] Speaker 4: Is it outside, inside? So he can start game planning better.
[2:50] Speaker 4: I think you got a little more continuity with your
[2:53] Speaker 4: offensive line. There's still some things I'm a little concerned,
[2:55] Speaker 4: like the free run at the quarterback down there near
[2:58] Speaker 4: the goal line.
[2:59] Speaker 3: Almost got DeMond killed.
[3:00] Speaker 4: And you also saw the playmaking ability of your tight end,
[3:04] Speaker 4: regardless of what the competition was. I think Baron Neone
[3:08] Speaker 4: has shown that he can make big plays. He's a
[3:11] Speaker 4: good route runner. He catches the ball well, and he
[3:13] Speaker 4: can get downfield. So you accomplished getting some confidence and
[3:16] Speaker 4: finding some things out about who you are.
[3:18] Speaker 1: Sure.
[3:19] Speaker 4: Does it mean a whole lot in the grand scheme
[3:20] Speaker 4: of things? Maybe not because of the competition, but you
[3:22] Speaker 4: at least accomplished some things for your team.
[3:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked about this on Friday's show, me and Jackson,
[3:26] Speaker 2: that a couple guys need to be reminded that they're
[3:30] Speaker 2: good players. And that sounds ridiculous for a team of
[3:34] Speaker 2: supposedly our caliber– in the Big Ten, but after what
[3:37] Speaker 2: you saw the first two weeks, reality is reality, right? So,
[3:40] Speaker 2: Des Roebuck, you mentioned 9-for-9. Des and Rasheed Williams were
[3:44] Speaker 2: 15-for-15 combined, the two of them. Brian Bonner is a freshman,
[3:48] Speaker 2: goes for 80 yards and has a touchdown, or excuse me,
[3:51] Speaker 2: a long run of 55. This is a guy that
[3:53] Speaker 2: was a four-star recruit, averaged, you know, what, nine yards
[3:56] Speaker 2: a carry in high school, 30 yards a catch.
[3:59] Speaker 3: He needed to be reminded he can do it.
[4:01] Speaker 2: So, I agree with that, that they might have picked
[4:04] Speaker 2: up some confidence, But how long does that last until
[4:07] Speaker 2: you get punched in the face in your first Big
[4:09] Speaker 2: Ten game on Saturday at 8 o'clock?
[4:11] Speaker 6: You just said it, until you get punched in the face.
[4:13] Speaker 6: And then that confidence lapses or you lose it once
[4:16] Speaker 6: you get punched in the face. But Greg is right.
[4:19] Speaker 6: We gained some confidence. We got some guys to ball
[4:21] Speaker 6: that we needed to see. We talked about Roebuck. Is
[4:23] Speaker 6: he the number one receiver or not? Well, he definitely
[4:26] Speaker 6: looked like the number one receiver in that game and
[4:29] Speaker 6: got some confidence.
[4:30] Speaker 3: But I didn't really like that.
[4:31] Speaker 6: We always talk about the Big Ten being a place
[4:34] Speaker 6: where you have to run the ball. I thought we
[4:36] Speaker 6: could have ran the ball. We averaged 5.7 yards of carry,
[4:39] Speaker 6: but we only carried the ball 26 times. It goes
[4:42] Speaker 6: back to what I always say about Coach Fish is
[4:44] Speaker 6: he likes to be cute. Yeah, we got four touchdowns thrown,
[4:48] Speaker 6: 300 yards. He probably has 70% completion, but that's against Eastern.
[4:52] Speaker 6: Why couldn't we run the ball? Why couldn't we run
[4:54] Speaker 6: the ball 40 times a game?
[4:55] Speaker 3: We got Bonner. He did his Greg Lewis.
[4:58] Speaker 6: He got caught at the end, but He had some
[5:01] Speaker 6: great carries, had 80 yards, but why couldn't we give
[5:04] Speaker 6: him at least 10 carries? The most running back got
[5:08] Speaker 6: was eight carries, but why couldn't we run the ball more?
[5:10] Speaker 6: Why couldn't we run it 40 times? It's real cute
[5:14] Speaker 6: to throw the ball like that against Eastern Washington. But
[5:18] Speaker 6: is that going to win us the games in the
[5:19] Speaker 6: Big Ten or not? There was a lot of questions
[5:21] Speaker 6: about that. Why is Cooley getting so much playing time?
[5:25] Speaker 6: Why isn't Brian Bonner getting more run on Saturday? And
[5:28] Speaker 6: when you're talking about throwing the ball, my first thing
[5:30] Speaker 6: I think of is because that's Jed.
[5:31] Speaker 2: That's what Jed wants to do. He wants to light
[5:34] Speaker 2: it up.
[5:35] Speaker 3: We're still in the Pac-12.
[5:36] Speaker 4: Yeah, Jed is going to be Jed. He's going to
[5:38] Speaker 4: do what he does. He's going to throw the football.
[5:40] Speaker 4: I think what we learn is that Our run game
[5:43] Speaker 4: is going to be an extension of the pass game,
[5:46] Speaker 4: the screens and the lateral passes. That, to him, is
[5:49] Speaker 4: kind of part of the run game and all of that.
[5:52] Speaker 4: And yes, I felt like Bonner should have gotten more carries.
[5:54] Speaker 4: But back to what you guys were saying earlier about
[5:56] Speaker 4: getting punched in the mouth. OK, let me share something
[5:58] Speaker 4: with you. There's a difference between getting punched in the
[6:00] Speaker 4: face by Mario Bailey or getting punched in the face.
[6:02] Speaker 3: By Greg Lewis.
[6:03] Speaker 4: Minnesota is like getting punched in the face by Mario Bailey.
[6:07] Speaker 3: It ain't going to hurt.
[6:09] Speaker 4: Now, if you're going to play Ohio State, that's like
[6:11] Speaker 4: me punching you in the face.
[6:13] Speaker 3: It feels different.
[6:14] Speaker 4: So I don't think we have to worry about the
[6:15] Speaker 4: punch in the face this week when it comes to that.
[6:18] Speaker 6: I think anybody in the Big Ten right now, our
[6:21] Speaker 6: team is not. capable of just dominating the Big Ten
[6:25] Speaker 6: right now. So I think Minnesota is going to give
[6:27] Speaker 6: us some problems because they're the best team that we've
[6:30] Speaker 6: played so far.
[6:31] Speaker 2: Yeah, look, I mean, I'm looking at Minnesota last year.
[6:34] Speaker 2: I know it's a different season. Drake Lindsey, who's their
[6:37] Speaker 2: starting quarterback, when they played Ohio State, when they played Iowa,
[6:41] Speaker 2: when they played Oregon, he's throwing for 138 yards. He's
[6:44] Speaker 2: throwing for 109. He's throwing for 94. They're getting hammered
[6:47] Speaker 2: by people.
[6:47] Speaker 5: 42-3, 41-3, 42-13.
[6:47] Speaker 2: They got beat by Northwestern last year, 38-35. barely beat Wisconsin,
[6:58] Speaker 2: which I know we lost to. This isn't a great team.
[7:02] Speaker 2: They're not a great team.
[7:03] Speaker 3: But what are we? That's the question, right? Here's the thing.
[7:06] Speaker 4: If you look at their schedule this year, they played
[7:08] Speaker 4: one tough team, and they lost. Mississippi State. Mississippi State
[7:11] Speaker 4: beat them, and they scored what? 10, 17 points?
[7:14] Speaker 3: They scored 13 points. 13 points. Yeah, they got beat 38-13.
[7:17] Speaker 4: The games where they piled up and scored a lot
[7:20] Speaker 4: of points were against the lesser teams, kind of like.
[7:22] Speaker 3: What we had. In one game?
[7:23] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[7:25] Speaker 3: We did it in one game.
[7:26] Speaker 4: Yeah, I said kind of like we have as far
[7:28] Speaker 4: as beating up on teams that we should beat. My
[7:32] Speaker 4: point is this is not a Big Ten heavyweight, right?
[7:35] Speaker 4: Now they got to come into Husky Stadium. They got
[7:38] Speaker 4: to come in and play at 10 o'clock at night
[7:40] Speaker 4: their time.
[7:41] Speaker 3: They got to.
[7:41] Speaker 4: Travel from Minneapolis, Minnesota or wherever they're from. wherever their
[7:44] Speaker 4: home base is out to Seattle. And we know how
[7:46] Speaker 4: all that works out. So we can call those things.
[7:49] Speaker 4: I know we've said before that those are excuses that
[7:50] Speaker 4: coaches come up with, but the data says that it
[7:53] Speaker 4: is real. And how many teams have come in the
[7:56] Speaker 4: Husky stadium, even under coach Jed Fish and actually one here,
[7:59] Speaker 4: usually that's the reserve for the Ohio States and the Oregon's.
[8:03] Speaker 3: Teams like that.
[8:04] Speaker 4: So I don't think that this week we should have
[8:07] Speaker 4: this big fear that now we're in Big Ten play.
[8:10] Speaker 4: We can't compete. I think this Husky football team is
[8:13] Speaker 4: better than what we've seen. I think they're going to
[8:15] Speaker 4: play better. I think they're going to do some things
[8:18] Speaker 4: in Big Ten play that they haven't tried to do yet.
[8:20] Speaker 4: I think they've gotten a little bit of confidence back.
[8:22] Speaker 4: So I don't think by any means we're going to
[8:25] Speaker 4: necessarily go out and destroy Minnesota. But I do believe
[8:29] Speaker 4: that this team is capable of winning a Big Ten championship.
[8:33] Speaker 4: middleweight fight at home at Husky Stadium. So I think
[8:37] Speaker 4: that's true. But as far as why we didn't dominate
[8:40] Speaker 4: them in the run game, Mario, again, Jed Fish is
[8:43] Speaker 4: never going to do that. I don't care who your
[8:45] Speaker 4: linemen are, who your running backs are. That's just not him.
[8:48] Speaker 6: But if you look at the Mississippi State game, the
[8:50] Speaker 6: game that Minnesota lost, they got gouged. They probably had
[8:54] Speaker 6: 250 yards rushing against Minnesota. So it's like, why weren't
[8:58] Speaker 6: we trying to just run the ball a little bit,
[9:00] Speaker 6: even when their backup came in We could have just
[9:03] Speaker 6: ran the ball, but.
[9:04] Speaker 4: We still continued to pass. We got 250 yards worth
[9:07] Speaker 4: of screens and lateral passes. That's just the reality of
[9:10] Speaker 4: what it's going to look like.
[9:11] Speaker 2: But you wanted to use the Eastern game as an
[9:14] Speaker 2: opportunity to more get the run game going than the
[9:17] Speaker 2: passing game going.
[9:18] Speaker 3: No shade of that. That makes sense.
[9:20] Speaker 5: It does.
[9:20] Speaker 6: Because I don't believe that if we play an Ohio
[9:23] Speaker 6: State or Indiana game, That we're just going to throw
[9:26] Speaker 6: for 350 yards and four touchdowns. And we're going to
[9:29] Speaker 6: have to run the ball if we're going to win
[9:31] Speaker 6: one of those big games that we keep talking about.
[9:33] Speaker 3: Well, here's the deal, man.
[9:34] Speaker 2: We talk about what kind of team comes into Husky
[9:36] Speaker 2: Stadium and wins.
[9:37] Speaker 3: It depends on what kind of Husky team we got.
[9:39] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[9:40] Speaker 3: Well, I'm just talking about over the last few years. Well,
[9:41] Speaker 3: the last few years, it's been Ohio State and it's
[9:43] Speaker 3: been Oregon.
[9:44] Speaker 1: Yep.
[9:44] Speaker 3: I mean, that's who's won here. That's it.
[9:46] Speaker 5: Right?
[9:46] Speaker 3: But 2021, when the Huskies went 4-8— They lost to UCLA.
[9:50] Speaker 3: They lost to Oregon. They lost to ASU. That doesn't
[9:53] Speaker 3: even matter.
[9:53] Speaker 2: They lost to Wazoo. They lost to Montana. So, but
[9:55] Speaker 2: that's my point. What is this team? Is this a
[9:58] Speaker 2: seven and five Husky team? is this a six and
[10:01] Speaker 2: six husky team because we've seen lesser quote unquote opponents
[10:06] Speaker 2: come here and win because the huskies aren't very good
[10:09] Speaker 2: so i'm i'm more concerned about what we are i
[10:12] Speaker 2: don't know what we are right i mean can brian
[10:15] Speaker 2: bonner run the ball in the big 10 can this
[10:17] Speaker 2: offensive line play in the big 10 Can DeMond Williams
[10:20] Speaker 2: throw the football against the Big Ten? Can this defense,
[10:23] Speaker 2: which has been doing it now for a couple years
[10:25] Speaker 2: under Jed Fish, I got more confidence in them, to
[10:27] Speaker 2: be honest with you, than the offense right now.
[10:29] Speaker 3: They'll keep us in the game to be able to win.
[10:31] Speaker 2: I am at a big-time wait-and-see mode right now, guys,
[10:33] Speaker 2: with this team.
[10:34] Speaker 6: Well, I told you, when I last played with Greg
[10:37] Speaker 6: in 1990... Our first two games were San Jose State
[10:41] Speaker 6: and Purdue. Now, we didn't look great in either one
[10:43] Speaker 6: of those games. We barely escaped either one. One by
[10:45] Speaker 6: three or four points. But then SC came to town,
[10:48] Speaker 6: and we dominated them 31-0.
[10:49] Speaker 3: So you can't tell.
[10:52] Speaker 6: It might be that they were just playing to the
[10:53] Speaker 6: competition and they're just waiting for the big team.
[10:56] Speaker 3: So you can't tell.
[10:57] Speaker 2: I'm totally with you. That's part of the I don't know, right?
[10:59] Speaker 2: And again, I think when the year began, what did
[11:02] Speaker 2: all of us say? First four games, got to win
[11:04] Speaker 2: them all. Anything but 4-0 is a disaster.
[11:07] Speaker 3: So let's not move the goalpost. No, not at all.
[11:09] Speaker 3: Let's keep it exactly where it was. Absolutely. And look
[11:12] Speaker 3: ahead to USC. Yeah.
[11:15] Speaker 4: You know, we can sit here and say we don't know,
[11:17] Speaker 4: but it doesn't matter if we don't know. The coaches
[11:19] Speaker 4: got to know. The players got to know. Those are
[11:21] Speaker 4: the guys who are going to have to line up
[11:24] Speaker 4: at 8 p.m. on Saturday and go out and play
[11:27] Speaker 4: with confidence. I think, you know, kind of like back
[11:30] Speaker 4: in 1990, I don't think we've seen all the plays
[11:32] Speaker 4: that Jed Fish is going to run.
[11:34] Speaker 3: That's a good point.
[11:34] Speaker 4: As far as the offense is concerned, you know, I
[11:36] Speaker 4: think there's a holding back to some degree of those
[11:39] Speaker 4: types of things.
[11:40] Speaker 3: You know, Landon Hatchett isn't going to play, but I
[11:43] Speaker 3: guarantee you.
[11:44] Speaker 4: Anybody that has been limited offensively or they've been saving
[11:48] Speaker 4: or that kind of thing, now is going to be
[11:49] Speaker 4: unleashed to play more.
[11:50] Speaker 3: You know that he's out Saturday? I don't know. They
[11:53] Speaker 3: said today he might.
[11:54] Speaker 4: They said he could play. He's not been cleared yet
[11:56] Speaker 4: as of today. I don't know, but I'm saying if
[11:58] Speaker 4: there's an opportunity, I guarantee you he will play. So
[12:01] Speaker 4: they're going to start to. look more like the team
[12:04] Speaker 4: that we're going to see for the rest of the
[12:06] Speaker 4: year as they ease into this, you know, whether scheme
[12:10] Speaker 4: or who's going to play or who's going to get
[12:12] Speaker 4: the most reps. Maybe I didn't like the fact that
[12:14] Speaker 4: Cooley got more reps than Bonner this last week. Maybe
[12:17] Speaker 4: this week that'll get flipped and Bonner will get the
[12:20] Speaker 4: ball more than Cooley as we're getting into this thing
[12:22] Speaker 4: because now everything counts.
[12:24] Speaker 3: Everything matters. And again, the margin for error is going
[12:28] Speaker 3: to be so thin.
[12:29] Speaker 1: All right.
[12:29] Speaker 3: So let me ask you this.
[12:30] Speaker 2: Whatever your confidence level was on the Huskies, the fourth
[12:33] Speaker 2: week of August, is it the same now, better or worse?
[12:38] Speaker 3: It's the fourth week of August. Before the year started.
[12:42] Speaker 3: End of the summer.
[12:44] Speaker 4: Probably a little worse, I think, in this sense. I
[12:47] Speaker 4: expected the offensive line to be a lot better. I
[12:50] Speaker 4: was hopeful that our running game and the backs that
[12:54] Speaker 4: we acquired, even though I was definitely skeptical, I was
[12:56] Speaker 4: hopeful that some of the guys that came in as
[12:59] Speaker 4: transfers were better than I hoped they would be. And
[13:02] Speaker 4: I thought Desmond Roebuck was going to burst out sooner.
[13:06] Speaker 4: But I'm more confident this week than I was last week.
[13:08] Speaker 4: How about that?
[13:09] Speaker 2: So you're allowing then the Eastern game to kind of
[13:11] Speaker 2: move the needle for you?
[13:12] Speaker 3: Yeah, just saying that we're not... A little bit. In
[13:15] Speaker 3: this sense, you.
[13:16] Speaker 4: If Desmond Roebuck is going to play like he played
[13:19] Speaker 4: the first two weeks, I'm scared to death if he's
[13:22] Speaker 4: going to drop passes because.
[13:23] Speaker 3: He's got to be the guy, right?
[13:24] Speaker 4: If Rasheed Williams is not going to have a breakout
[13:27] Speaker 4: game because he's the other guy I talked about at
[13:29] Speaker 4: the beginning of the year being that possible leading receiver,
[13:33] Speaker 4: he had a big game. So the fact that those
[13:35] Speaker 4: two guys showed up, regardless of competition, they just caught
[13:38] Speaker 4: the ball and they made plays.
[13:40] Speaker 3: So I'm a little more confident. And I think.
[13:42] Speaker 4: I think the quarterback himself is starting to get more
[13:44] Speaker 4: in the rhythm now. When you only have five incompletions,
[13:47] Speaker 4: and I'm not counting the sixth one. I'm never going
[13:48] Speaker 4: to count that one. If you only have five incompletions,
[13:51] Speaker 4: I don't care if you're throwing Skelly.
[13:52] Speaker 3: That is a.
[13:53] Speaker 4: Good day when you're out there completing the overwhelming majority
[13:57] Speaker 4: of your passes.
[13:58] Speaker 3: I agree with Greg. I think.
[14:01] Speaker 6: Looking at the two starters, the two running backs, the
[14:03] Speaker 6: two receivers that we lost, and just DeMond's play, I'm
[14:08] Speaker 6: not as confident as I was in August. But after
[14:11] Speaker 6: this last week and just watching the guys play and
[14:13] Speaker 6: some guys stepping up, I'm a little more confident for
[14:16] Speaker 6: this Minnesota game.
[14:17] Speaker 3: Well, the Roebuck thing, there was a story about this
[14:20] Speaker 3: this week.
[14:21] Speaker 2: You guys may have read about this, that his younger brother,
[14:24] Speaker 2: who is a wide receiver at Marana, was in a
[14:27] Speaker 2: car accident. and he was probably just completely out of
[14:31] Speaker 2: focus in the first couple weeks of the year. And
[14:34] Speaker 2: then rallied, obviously, had a much better game against Eastern. So,
[14:38] Speaker 2: first of all, thoughts with his family, number one. And
[14:40] Speaker 2: then number two, that might explain why he was a
[14:43] Speaker 2: little bit distracted in those first couple games of the year.
[14:46] Speaker 2: So we'll see what Desmond Roebuck does the rest of
[14:49] Speaker 2: the way. I'm with you guys, though, that this whole thing,
[14:52] Speaker 2: I think most of it is about them running the ball.
[14:54] Speaker 2: And they got to find a way to run the
[14:55] Speaker 2: ball and just, you know, have some threat of that.
[14:58] Speaker 2: And I haven't seen it against anybody legitimate this year.
[15:02] Speaker 2: You know, I mean, if it was Jordan Washington and
[15:04] Speaker 2: Adam Muhammad back there, I think you'd feel a lot better.
[15:07] Speaker 3: But it's not.
[15:08] Speaker 2: It's guys that are playing that are not supposed to
[15:10] Speaker 2: be playing right now. And, you know, I'm sure you've
[15:12] Speaker 2: been on teams before, Mario, maybe high school pro, whatever,
[15:15] Speaker 2: where defenses know you can't run the ball.
[15:18] Speaker 6: It happens, you know, next man up, you got to
[15:20] Speaker 6: figure it out. But we've had opportunities in these past
[15:22] Speaker 6: few weeks for some guys to step up, but you
[15:24] Speaker 6: got to give them the opportunity to step up. That's
[15:26] Speaker 6: all I'm saying is give these young men a chance,
[15:28] Speaker 6: especially in trash time in the fourth quarter. You could
[15:32] Speaker 6: have just been giving the guys a ball just to see.
[15:34] Speaker 6: And we just wanted to pass the ball.
[15:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, it just doesn't seem like it's in Jed's DNA.
[15:38] Speaker 3: I mean, I'll just say that. I'm curious to see
[15:40] Speaker 3: what they do on Saturday. It's not deep in his DNA.
[15:43] Speaker 3: I don't think it's in there.
[15:44] Speaker 2: Well, by the way, the one thing that they got
[15:46] Speaker 2: to cut out is these stupid personal fouls.
[15:47] Speaker 3: You know that nine of them, by the way?
[15:49] Speaker 2: They got nine personal fouls and unsportsmanlike penalties. We're going
[15:52] Speaker 2: to play a clip next segment from Ryan Walters. Well,
[15:55] Speaker 2: I got to tell you, he's had enough. I mean,
[15:56] Speaker 2: this is going to start impacting guys' playing time. And
[15:59] Speaker 2: it should, right? By the way, next Tuesday... We're going
[16:03] Speaker 2: to have two lucky winners join us here in the studio.

[17:24] Speaker 3: Right side. Chris Lawson to the 10. To the 5.
[17:26] Speaker 3: He breaks a tackle, and he is into.
[17:28] Speaker 1: The end zone.
[17:29] Speaker 2: Chris Lawson, his first touchdown as.
[17:33] Speaker 3: A Washington Husky. All right, we're back.
[17:37] Speaker 2: Big thanks to UA Local 32, Heider Construction, Mitsubishi Electric,
[17:42] Speaker 2: Heating and Air, Delta Airlines, and Clearwater Casino. The FanDuel
[17:46] Speaker 2: Sportsbook at Suquamish. Clearwater Casino Resort is open. For you,
[17:51] Speaker 2: Mario Bailey, Greg Lewis, Dave Softe-Mahler, Minnesota, and the Huskies
[17:56] Speaker 2: on Saturday. First time, by the way, since 1976 that
[18:01] Speaker 2: Minnesota has played a game in Husky Stadium. Greg, you
[18:04] Speaker 2: were there. 38-7 win for UW. I would have been
[18:07] Speaker 2: seven years old.
[18:08] Speaker 3: Okay. You may have been there. Or were you in
[18:12] Speaker 3: Florida back then, by the way? No, I was here.
[18:14] Speaker 3: You were here.
[18:16] Speaker 2: 1917 loss at Minnesota in 77 is the last time
[18:19] Speaker 2: these two teams played. So it's been a long time, right?
[18:21] Speaker 2: Almost 40 years since they played a football game against
[18:23] Speaker 2: each other. Or 50 years, sorry. But I'd like to
[18:27] Speaker 2: go that long without having a personal foul or an
[18:29] Speaker 2: unsportsmanlike penalty. UW's got nine of them, by the way.
[18:32] Speaker 2: On the year so far, eight of them on the
[18:35] Speaker 2: defensive side. We talked to Ryan Walters. Check this out.
[18:39] Speaker 2: Ryan Walters, UW defensive coordinator on that very topic this afternoon. Ryan,
[18:44] Speaker 2: the sequence Saturday with X-Ray getting kicked out and Jacobs' punch,
[18:49] Speaker 2: I guess.
[18:50] Speaker 3: Did you take any issue with either.
[18:52] Speaker 4: One of those calls?
[18:54] Speaker 5: No, not with the official calls. Like I said, when
[18:59] Speaker 5: a play is flagged, it's for a reason. You know,
[19:02] Speaker 5: they review a targeting and they uphold it. It's for
[19:05] Speaker 5: a reason. So you teach off of it. You know,
[19:08] Speaker 5: the the penalties are something that is is very frustrating.
[19:16] Speaker 5: You know, I told the defense on Sunday, you know,
[19:21] Speaker 5: undisciplined is a characteristic or trait that you do not
[19:24] Speaker 5: want to be associated with. And right now we reek
[19:26] Speaker 5: of it. And it's starting to creep into like undisciplined eyes,
[19:30] Speaker 5: undisciplined alignments. Um, and so that is something that, um,
[19:35] Speaker 5: we need to correct and we got to correct it ASAP.
[19:38] Speaker 5: You know, I sat up here after the first game
[19:40] Speaker 5: and said it was going to be fixed because it
[19:42] Speaker 5: had to. And, you know, we were cleaner the second
[19:45] Speaker 5: week and then it creeped its head back up this
[19:47] Speaker 5: third week. So, you know, can't just treat it like
[19:51] Speaker 5: it's a one-off because it's not a one-off anymore. So
[19:54] Speaker 5: definitely got to get that corrected. If we want to
[19:56] Speaker 5: be the type of defense that I believe we can be,
[20:00] Speaker 5: you know, if you're great or if you're elite, undisciplined
[20:03] Speaker 5: is not in that equation. And so we got to
[20:07] Speaker 5: get that corrected ASAP.
[20:10] Speaker 3: This wasn't an issue last year, at least not like this.
[20:14] Speaker 1: Right.
[20:14] Speaker 3: Why is it happening now?
[20:16] Speaker 5: I mean, if I knew the whys, you know, I
[20:20] Speaker 5: think we'd have nipped this in the bud a while ago. But,
[20:22] Speaker 5: you know, it could be a combination of a lot
[20:24] Speaker 5: of things. You know, but I believe that the guys
[20:30] Speaker 5: recognize the need to be more disciplined. You know, we can't.
[20:35] Speaker 5: survive extending drives with penalties against, you know, Big Ten opponents.
[20:42] Speaker 5: Not if we want to do the type of things
[20:43] Speaker 5: we want to do this year as a program and
[20:46] Speaker 5: as a defense. Okay.
[20:48] Speaker 2: He says being undisciplined is a character trait that you
[20:51] Speaker 2: don't want to be associated with, and right now we
[20:53] Speaker 2: reek of it. says Ryan Walters. I mean, that's a
[20:57] Speaker 2: pretty good quote, first of all, number one. And number two,
[20:59] Speaker 2: he's exactly right. I mean, they had three more guys
[21:02] Speaker 2: in the Eastern game, Mario. They had two guys get
[21:04] Speaker 2: kicked out in the same play, targeting on X-Ray and
[21:07] Speaker 2: then an unnecessary roughness on Jacob Lane trying to punch
[21:11] Speaker 2: a guy. And then Devin Hyde had one later in
[21:14] Speaker 2: the game as well. So are we at a point
[21:16] Speaker 2: now where this should start impacting who plays and who doesn't?
[21:19] Speaker 6: It should have started in the first game, but he's
[21:21] Speaker 6: absolutely right. He articulated it perfectly that that's undisciplined and
[21:25] Speaker 6: that's not what you want your defensive team, or you
[21:27] Speaker 6: don't want any team to be that way. So with
[21:30] Speaker 6: coach James, I know if you were getting kicked out
[21:32] Speaker 6: the game or you were having too many penalties like that,
[21:35] Speaker 6: you were going to suffer when it came to practice
[21:37] Speaker 6: the next day or something. I don't, I'm not saying
[21:38] Speaker 6: that that's what should happen, but there should be some,
[21:41] Speaker 6: disciplinary actions done or you're not going to play just
[21:44] Speaker 6: flat out. We can't have that because in the big
[21:46] Speaker 6: time games, we can't keep having over 100 yards in penalties.
[21:50] Speaker 6: We had over 100 yards the first game and over
[21:52] Speaker 6: 100 yards this past game. That can't happen in a
[21:54] Speaker 6: good game. good team when we play a good team
[21:56] Speaker 6: we can't have that many penalties.
[21:58] Speaker 4: Yeah i don't think uh again and coach james area
[22:01] Speaker 4: wouldn't fly i remember one guy who uh i remember
[22:04] Speaker 4: getting a penalty for throwing punches a guy named ricky
[22:07] Speaker 4: andrews who played middle linebacker for us 55 and i
[22:10] Speaker 4: can guarantee you that was very rare didn't happen again
[22:13] Speaker 4: uh for the rest of the season but i will
[22:15] Speaker 4: say this though There are some things right now that
[22:18] Speaker 4: are penalties that weren't penalties. What X-Ray Alexander did wasn't
[22:22] Speaker 4: a penalty when we played. So you're not getting a
[22:26] Speaker 4: targeting or whatever it is.
[22:27] Speaker 3: So some of this is a byproduct of the new rules.
[22:30] Speaker 2: Now, you've got to adjust and adapt to the new rules.
[22:33] Speaker 2: I was going to say, why is that relevant? It's
[22:36] Speaker 2: been a penalty ever since X-Ray started playing football. 100%.
[22:39] Speaker 5: I don't think.
[22:40] Speaker 4: Sometimes things just happen. You're just trying to make a tackle.
[22:43] Speaker 4: You're not trying to use your head. You're not trying
[22:45] Speaker 4: to drop your head. It just happens instinctively.
[22:47] Speaker 3: That's not a guy losing focus and being a bonehead.
[22:50] Speaker 4: I get you. That's all I'm saying. Some of these
[22:53] Speaker 4: wouldn't have been a penalty then.
[22:54] Speaker 2: You're saying what X-Ray did is in a different category
[22:57] Speaker 2: than what RDA did a couple weeks ago.
[22:59] Speaker 5: 100%.
[22:59] Speaker 3: 1,000% because it just happens. But again.
[23:03] Speaker 4: Yeah, if guys are going to start throwing punches, that's
[23:06] Speaker 4: a sign of frustration. Frustration usually happens when you don't
[23:08] Speaker 4: think you're playing as well as you should or things
[23:11] Speaker 4: aren't going as well. I know it happened in a
[23:13] Speaker 4: game where we had a good lead, but I'm sure
[23:16] Speaker 4: Jacob Lane might have been frustrated about something. And that's
[23:19] Speaker 4: when you got to be able to keep your head
[23:21] Speaker 4: and able to not do things like throw punches. I
[23:25] Speaker 4: never found it, like I said, smart to throw a punch.
[23:27] Speaker 4: One time I ran up on somebody, I got my
[23:29] Speaker 4: butt kicked. And that cured me of ever wanting to
[23:32] Speaker 4: throw a punch in a football game.
[23:34] Speaker 5: Right.
[23:34] Speaker 3: Because it doesn't matter. You're not going to hurt anybody
[23:36] Speaker 3: anyway with their helmets on.
[23:37] Speaker 2: Well, the guy that you mentioned, the linebacker who was
[23:39] Speaker 2: getting the flags back in the day.
[23:41] Speaker 3: Ricky Andrews. He was a good player.
[23:43] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[23:43] Speaker 3: Did he not play in the NFL for a long time?
[23:45] Speaker 5: No.
[23:45] Speaker 3: Ricky Andrews? Are you sure? He was with the Seahawks
[23:47] Speaker 3: for a minute. Okay. He's a Polynesian guy named Ricky Andrews.
[23:50] Speaker 3: Very good player.
[23:51] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[23:51] Speaker 3: So taking him off the field would have been a problem. Yeah,
[23:54] Speaker 3: he was our starting linebacker. That would have made your
[23:55] Speaker 3: defense worse.
[23:56] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[23:56] Speaker 1: Yes.
[23:57] Speaker 2: Are you willing to do that with some of your
[23:59] Speaker 2: best players to prove a point?
[24:01] Speaker 5: I am.
[24:01] Speaker 6: I'm willing to do it with whoever it needs to
[24:03] Speaker 6: be done with.
[24:04] Speaker 3: I don't care.
[24:05] Speaker 6: Because once you do it to that type of player,
[24:07] Speaker 6: then everybody else falls in line.
[24:10] Speaker 4: That player will get the message as well because he's
[24:12] Speaker 4: going to hurt you more being in there getting you.
[24:14] Speaker 4: On that one play you just mentioned, it was a
[24:16] Speaker 4: 30-yard penalty. It was a 30-yard change from stopping the
[24:19] Speaker 4: team to giving them 30 yards on that play in particular.
[24:22] Speaker 4: So they can hurt you by being in the game
[24:25] Speaker 4: if they continue to do those things. You make an
[24:27] Speaker 4: example out of them one time. you've sent a message
[24:29] Speaker 4: loud and clear for them and for everybody else.
[24:31] Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt.
[24:32] Speaker 2: I mean, it would be what we call a pisser
[24:36] Speaker 2: if the Huskies went out on Saturday and played a
[24:38] Speaker 2: tight game against Minnesota and lost it because of something
[24:41] Speaker 2: like this. And I'm starting to wonder if they are
[24:44] Speaker 2: developing a bit of a reputation because I thought the
[24:46] Speaker 2: Jacob Lane– thing is I've seen that before.
[24:50] Speaker 3: You know, guys are crawling on all fours.
[24:52] Speaker 2: They get shoved to the ground by an offensive lineman
[24:54] Speaker 2: and they reach out and try to take a jab
[24:56] Speaker 2: at somebody, but they kicked him out of the game
[24:58] Speaker 2: for it. And I'm wondering if they're starting to develop
[25:00] Speaker 2: that reputation, man.
[25:02] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[25:02] Speaker 4: And once that happens, referees are looking for stuff, right?
[25:05] Speaker 4: And when an altercation does happen, you know how it
[25:07] Speaker 4: used to be, The second guy gets caught. Well, when
[25:10] Speaker 4: you have the reputation, they're now looking, well, you probably
[25:13] Speaker 4: did something to provoke him, so it doesn't even get
[25:16] Speaker 4: you that love.
[25:17] Speaker 2: Well, I mean, there's a couple things about this Minnesota
[25:19] Speaker 2: team that I think are of importance. Number one, they
[25:21] Speaker 2: got a wide receiver named Javon Tracy, who had two
[25:24] Speaker 2: punt returns for touchdowns in the opening game of the
[25:26] Speaker 2: year against Eastern Illinois. Five catches, 98 yards that week,
[25:31] Speaker 2: seven for 51 in an SEC game the second week,
[25:34] Speaker 2: and then five for 91 defensively. Last week, their best
[25:37] Speaker 2: running back, by the way, is a guy named Darius Taylor.
[25:41] Speaker 2: I don't know if he's going to play or not
[25:43] Speaker 2: in the game on Saturday, but Drake Lindsey is an
[25:45] Speaker 2: NFL prospect. I mean, he's listed at like 6'5, 230.
[25:49] Speaker 2: He's not going to run the way Nate Bell did,
[25:50] Speaker 2: but he's a beast. He's a big boy. You can
[25:52] Speaker 2: chuck it.
[25:53] Speaker 4: Yeah, he can throw the ball around, and they've scored
[25:55] Speaker 4: some points against lesser-than defenses. I think we by far
[25:58] Speaker 4: will be the best defense ever. They played this year.
[26:01] Speaker 4: I know they played Mississippi State, but I think our
[26:03] Speaker 4: defense is better. I think that all around we've shown
[26:07] Speaker 4: that we can struggle with the mobile quarterback getting outside
[26:10] Speaker 4: of the pocket. But when they're in a drop back
[26:13] Speaker 4: mode and just throwing against progression, our defense and our
[26:16] Speaker 4: secondary stepped up. Our safeties are playing well. So I
[26:19] Speaker 4: think we will be solid on the defense this week.
[26:23] Speaker 4: I think we do need to, however, apply more pressure
[26:27] Speaker 4: to the quarterback. Now, as far as it goes, their
[26:31] Speaker 4: receiver slash punt returner. I'm a little concerned about that.
[26:34] Speaker 3: Here's why.
[26:35] Speaker 4: We do have one of the best punters in college
[26:37] Speaker 4: football right now. He's booming the ball. But sometimes when
[26:39] Speaker 4: you boom the ball, and it's happened even in some
[26:42] Speaker 4: games so far, you outkick your coverage. And so he's
[26:45] Speaker 4: able to catch the ball cleanly and have... 10, 15
[26:49] Speaker 4: yards in front of him before there's a defender. That's
[26:52] Speaker 4: what it means when you out-kick your coverage. This guy's
[26:54] Speaker 4: been elusive. He's made people miss. So with that much
[26:57] Speaker 4: room to make things happen, he could make some big
[27:00] Speaker 4: plays against you. And the way a team like Minnesota
[27:04] Speaker 4: comes into Husky Stadium and gets an upset win is
[27:06] Speaker 4: by making a big return in the kicking game. So
[27:09] Speaker 4: we've got to be solid on all our coverages. Yeah,
[27:11] Speaker 4: we saw that Saturday. Eastern actually had a guy muff
[27:13] Speaker 4: a pump, but there was no one there.
[27:14] Speaker 5: No.
[27:15] Speaker 3: To recover it.
[27:16] Speaker 2: So let's come back and talk about these wide receivers, right?
[27:18] Speaker 2: I mean, I asked you last week, and you thought
[27:20] Speaker 2: Chris Lawson was going to eventually emerge and be.
[27:23] Speaker 3: That number one guy.
[27:25] Speaker 5: All right?
[27:26] Speaker 3: You said it, or I thought Mario said it. No,
[27:28] Speaker 3: he said Williams. I said Williams was actually doing it.
[27:30] Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
[27:31] Speaker 3: And then I mentioned.
[27:33] Speaker 2: Roebuck in the pregame. Let's come back and talk about it, right?
[27:36] Speaker 2: Did you see anything out of that wide receiver core?
[27:38] Speaker 2: Chris Lawson needs the ball more. Okay, that makes you
[27:41] Speaker 2: feel good. All right, don't give it away yet. More
[27:43] Speaker 2: with Mario and Greg next on 93.3 KJRFM.
[27:49] Speaker 1: Now back to the Coors Light Husky Honks on Tuesdays.
[27:52] Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light, by Mitsubishi Electric
[27:56] Speaker 1: Heating and Air Conditioning, by UA Local 32, Heiner Construction,
[28:01] Speaker 1: and by Delta Airlines.
[28:03] Speaker 3: On your home for the Huskies.
[28:05] Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
[28:09] Speaker 3: Inside the red zone, 335 to go. DeMond looking to
[28:12] Speaker 3: the end zone. Oh, what a catch!
[28:16] Speaker 1: A beautiful one-handed grab by Rasheed Williams right.
[28:21] Speaker 3: Inside the pylon.
[28:23] Speaker 4: Absolutely gorgeous touchdown grab by Rasheed.
[28:28] Speaker 3: My goodness. Yeah, that catch was right in front of me, man.
[28:31] Speaker 3: Great one-handed catch.
[28:33] Speaker 2: Had to kind of contort his body to slip in
[28:35] Speaker 2: through the pylon there in the end zone and make
[28:37] Speaker 2: that catch. And that kind of feels like one of
[28:39] Speaker 2: those catches you don't really care who you're playing, right?
[28:42] Speaker 3: I mean, that's not about the opponent.
[28:44] Speaker 2: That's about a guy going up and grabbing a football
[28:46] Speaker 2: and showing off his athleticism.
[28:48] Speaker 3: So, I don't know. I mean, you're the wide receiver here, Mario.
[28:51] Speaker 2: Mario Bailey, Greg Lewis, off the Husky Honks continue for
[28:54] Speaker 2: one more segment. What do we make of this wide
[28:56] Speaker 2: receiver core after three games?
[28:58] Speaker 6: I think that was their best game as a group.
[29:01] Speaker 6: I thought guys stepped up, made some plays. Robach, Williams
[29:04] Speaker 6: came in, lost and scored a touchdown. A tight end,
[29:08] Speaker 6: so you want to include the tight end into the receivers.
[29:10] Speaker 6: But I just thought some guys made some plays, and
[29:13] Speaker 6: we kind of established that Robach is the number one receiver.
[29:16] Speaker 6: At least he is in his quarterback's mind, and that's
[29:18] Speaker 6: all that really matters. He went to him over and
[29:21] Speaker 6: over again. And Greg said at the beginning of the season,
[29:24] Speaker 6: Williams would be the other receiver. He looks like it
[29:26] Speaker 6: right now. But I still see Chris Lawson as a
[29:29] Speaker 6: guy that if you get him the ball in space,
[29:31] Speaker 6: he's going to make a play. If you look at
[29:32] Speaker 6: the last week, he made a one-handed grab. They didn't
[29:35] Speaker 6: call it as a touchdown, but he did make the play.
[29:38] Speaker 6: And I can see him continuously making the play. plays.
[29:40] Speaker 6: It's up to Coach Fish to give him the ball
[29:43] Speaker 6: in different spaces and get him the ball.
[29:45] Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't—you know, Mario probably knows that position a
[29:47] Speaker 4: little better than I do, so I defer to his
[29:50] Speaker 4: knowledge long-term on that.
[29:52] Speaker 3: You hear that? He gave you a maybe, by the way.
[29:54] Speaker 3: I'll take it. I'll take that. But my point is this.
[29:57] Speaker 4: When you have guys who are experienced that the young
[29:59] Speaker 4: guys look up to— You know, you want that guy
[30:02] Speaker 4: to be having success so that he's coming in and
[30:05] Speaker 4: he's an example to the younger guys. They're looking up
[30:07] Speaker 4: to him. They're learning from him. They're learning his habits
[30:10] Speaker 4: because he's done it and he's been there before. So
[30:12] Speaker 4: I think you want Roebuck to be the leader in
[30:15] Speaker 4: that receiver room, even.
[30:16] Speaker 3: Though he's only a sophomore.
[30:17] Speaker 5: Right.
[30:18] Speaker 4: Second year player because he's done it. I think the
[30:20] Speaker 4: same thing out of Williams. You know, the guy's been around.
[30:23] Speaker 4: and we've been waiting for him to have this type
[30:25] Speaker 4: of success. He made the big play. I think the way,
[30:29] Speaker 4: you know, he's built, you know, he's got those long
[30:32] Speaker 4: arms and that he showed it on that catch in
[30:34] Speaker 4: the end zone there. I think you want those guys
[30:36] Speaker 4: to be making plays so that the young guys can
[30:38] Speaker 4: kind of glean from them, look up to them and
[30:40] Speaker 4: they can help those young guys long. Cause those guys
[30:42] Speaker 4: haven't done it yet. They haven't been through the grind.
[30:45] Speaker 4: You know, they haven't been through a, what a, the
[30:48] Speaker 4: 12-game Big Ten D1 type of season. So you want
[30:51] Speaker 4: the younger guys looking up to them. But long-term, Chris
[30:53] Speaker 4: Lawson does look like he has a ton of potential
[30:56] Speaker 4: and is going to be a good wide receiver. But
[30:57] Speaker 4: I definitely want to make sure we continue to get
[31:00] Speaker 4: Desmond Roebuck to football.
[31:02] Speaker 6: Well, I say with Roebuck, what I always say when
[31:05] Speaker 6: we're talking about receivers, period, is touchdowns. You can talk
[31:08] Speaker 6: about guys making plays, but Williams has made three touchdowns
[31:11] Speaker 6: so far.
[31:12] Speaker 3: Roebuck hasn't scored.
[31:13] Speaker 6: It means something if your guy is getting in the
[31:16] Speaker 6: end zone and making that play. That's why I always
[31:18] Speaker 6: think about the guys and I talk about playmakers. It
[31:21] Speaker 6: means something when a guy is scoring touchdowns.
[31:23] Speaker 3: So we're going to see how this plays out.
[31:25] Speaker 6: It's not going to be fun for Robach if he
[31:27] Speaker 6: makes all these catches and never gets in the end zone.
[31:29] Speaker 3: I'm telling you.
[31:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Danny Collins is the defensive coordinator for Minnesota.
[31:35] Speaker 2: And I know what I would do if I were
[31:36] Speaker 2: Danny Collins. I'd take those guys away. I'd jam them all.
[31:39] Speaker 3: That's it.
[31:40] Speaker 2: Make them run the ball. Make them show they can
[31:41] Speaker 2: run the ball. I mean, Jed's got to be expecting that, right?
[31:44] Speaker 2: It has to come. You're going to have to run
[31:46] Speaker 2: the ball.
[31:47] Speaker 3: You're not.
[31:47] Speaker 6: We're going to key on your receivers. We're going to
[31:50] Speaker 6: jump them. We're going to smash them in the head.
[31:52] Speaker 6: We're going to have a spy on DeMond. And you're
[31:55] Speaker 6: going to have to run the ball.
[31:57] Speaker 3: And it's coming.
[31:57] Speaker 4: There's only 11 guys on defense, so you can't double-team
[32:00] Speaker 4: both those guys and have.
[32:01] Speaker 3: A spy on DeMond.
[32:02] Speaker 4: You're going to have a spy on DeMond and you're
[32:04] Speaker 4: going to jam the receiver. I hear what you're saying,
[32:05] Speaker 4: and that's when... Of course, Coach Fish is going to have, OK,
[32:08] Speaker 4: they're a nickel personnel all the time. They're playing, you know,
[32:11] Speaker 4: in a deep zone. They got two guys, deep safeties,
[32:14] Speaker 4: you know, taking away the pass. Then that's when you
[32:17] Speaker 4: run the football. You're going to have to. So or again,
[32:20] Speaker 4: I think what we're going to see is either the
[32:22] Speaker 4: running backs catching the ball out of the backfield.
[32:24] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[32:24] Speaker 4: Or you're going to see which I loved the new
[32:28] Speaker 4: weapon that we discovered in Baron Naomi. The tight end
[32:31] Speaker 4: had a great football game and you can put them
[32:33] Speaker 4: in positions where you motion the tight end out, you know,
[32:37] Speaker 4: from the flex position or you motion the backs out
[32:40] Speaker 4: so that the coverage has to adjust a little bit
[32:42] Speaker 4: and find places for those burning backs or those tight ends.
[32:46] Speaker 4: to get open against the zone defense. So I think
[32:48] Speaker 4: that's what they're going to have to do if they
[32:50] Speaker 4: do play a lot of zone on those guys.
[32:52] Speaker 6: I can't say we found a new weapon in Naoni
[32:55] Speaker 6: just for one pass. He had the one 75-yard pass.
[32:58] Speaker 6: He caught a couple passes, but it's really just one pass.
[33:02] Speaker 1: So.
[33:03] Speaker 3: He caught a couple the first few weeks, too.
[33:05] Speaker 2: He's got nine catches for 102 yards outside of that
[33:08] Speaker 2: one play.
[33:10] Speaker 3: You're underselling the young man. We've got to do weapons.
[33:13] Speaker 3: We'll see. You know what? Greg and I are tired
[33:16] Speaker 3: of your negativity. I knew it was coming. I forgot.
[33:21] Speaker 3: What was I, negative Ned? Negative Ned.
[33:24] Speaker 2: And let's wrap it up with a conversation about number one, right?
[33:29] Speaker 2: Because the numbers aren't phenomenal, right? But if you go
[33:32] Speaker 2: back to last year, he's actually got more yards than
[33:35] Speaker 2: he did after his first three non-conference games, which were
[33:38] Speaker 2: cupcakes a year ago, too, by the way. One less
[33:41] Speaker 2: touchdown and one more interception. And the interception came when
[33:44] Speaker 2: he got pounded off of the edge because somebody missed
[33:48] Speaker 2: a block. He's got 150 yards rushing so far. He's
[33:51] Speaker 2: your leading rusher after three games, which Greg said he
[33:54] Speaker 2: would be, but that's not really going out on much
[33:56] Speaker 2: of a limb.
[33:57] Speaker 3: What do we.
[33:57] Speaker 2: Make of the way this guy's played? Is he giving
[34:00] Speaker 2: us what we thought he would give us in year three?
[34:03] Speaker 4: I think expectations are always goals according to expectations. the
[34:08] Speaker 4: money that's been given. I think that's what's happened to
[34:11] Speaker 4: him right now. We want to see $ 4 million, $ 4. 5
[34:13] Speaker 4: million worth, which means we want him to go out,
[34:16] Speaker 4: throw for $ 300, 000 and rush for.
[34:17] Speaker 3: $ 100, 000 every single game. And that's just not going to happen.
[34:20] Speaker 3: I think right now, though.
[34:22] Speaker 4: he would probably say he's not playing at his highest
[34:25] Speaker 4: and best capability. But let's remember, if three passes that
[34:29] Speaker 4: could have produced another probably 150 yards of offense had
[34:33] Speaker 4: been caught, his statistics would look even better. So I
[34:36] Speaker 4: think right now he's doing okay, and I think he
[34:38] Speaker 4: got in a rhythm this week. The first three games
[34:41] Speaker 4: last year, I don't know how– We would compare them
[34:44] Speaker 4: to the first three games this year as far as competition.
[34:46] Speaker 3: Maybe it's relatively the same. Yeah, yeah.
[34:48] Speaker 2: UC Davis, Wazoo, and Colorado State. Yeah, so they're about
[34:51] Speaker 2: the same, I guess. So I think his numbers are okay. Okay, Mario,
[34:55] Speaker 2: 30 seconds.
[34:56] Speaker 6: I expected a little more from him, but I'm not
[34:58] Speaker 6: disappointed because we're 3-0, and that's really the bottom line.
[35:01] Speaker 6: In this past game, I would say he's gotten better
[35:04] Speaker 6: each week, and that's all you want to happen. So
[35:07] Speaker 6: we're going into Game 4, and we could be 4-0.
[35:09] Speaker 6: So I'll give him that.
[35:11] Speaker 3: All right, good stuff. Saturday, 4 o'clock.
[35:13] Speaker 2: And by the way, Mario, there is a post-game show
[35:16] Speaker 2: on Saturday night.
[35:18] Speaker 3: At 1230.
[35:19] Speaker 2: Yes, we'll see you then. All right, good stuff. John
[35:21] Speaker 2: Willner will join us. We'll talk more college football coming
[35:23] Speaker 2: up on 93.3 KJRFM.
[35:24] Speaker 3: Go Dawgs!
