[0:52] Speaker 1: Dave Zocchi-Muller.
[0:53] Speaker 3: All righty, here we go on a busy Tuesday. When
[0:57] Speaker 3: you mouth something to me, I don't know what's going on.
[1:00] Speaker 3: Turn your volume up, by the way, on your headphones
[1:02] Speaker 3: underneath there. There's like a little knob, and you turn
[1:04] Speaker 3: it clockwise, and it should turn the volume up.
[1:07] Speaker 4: Really?
[1:08] Speaker 2: Okay.
[1:08] Speaker 3: Well, you know, what you could do, Mario, is just
[1:10] Speaker 3: take the headphones off, and you'll be fine. Take the
[1:12] Speaker 3: headphones off for a quick second. Just take them off.
[1:14] Speaker 2: Go ahead. Take them off.
[1:15] Speaker 3: Take them off.
[1:16] Speaker 2: Can you hear me now? Here you go. We're good.
[1:17] Speaker 1: Nice.
[1:18] Speaker 5: What is going on here, man?
[1:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. What is going on? You know. Get
[1:23] Speaker 2: what you pay for.
[1:23] Speaker 3: How many shows have we done here? So you can't
[1:27] Speaker 3: hear anything I'm saying? Not in here. So I could
[1:28] Speaker 3: rip your ass right now and you had no idea.
[1:30] Speaker 5: I hear you.
[1:31] Speaker 2: Okay.
[1:32] Speaker 5: I don't hear you in here.
[1:32] Speaker 3: Okay.
[1:33] Speaker 2: Well, then take the headphones off. You know what? You
[1:35] Speaker 2: don't need them.
[1:35] Speaker 3: They're pointless. I mean, we're not taking calls on this show.
[1:38] Speaker 3: We're not playing on... We are going to play some
[1:40] Speaker 3: audio in just a second, by the way. So we
[1:42] Speaker 3: will get some headphones for you. This is a major
[1:44] Speaker 3: market freaking radio station. We can't find a pair of
[1:47] Speaker 3: effing headphones. that Mario can use for God's sakes.
[1:50] Speaker 2: Anyway, how are you? You good? I'm doing great. Greg,
[1:53] Speaker 2: how are you, man? Feeling good? One day at a time.
[1:56] Speaker 2: I don't know about good. Feeling good, Lewis.
[2:00] Speaker 3: I'm feeling good later. Okay, well, let's get to it.
[2:04] Speaker 3: Let's talk about what we saw at Purdue. Obviously, a
[2:07] Speaker 3: big win for Washington because their offense at least looked competent.
[2:11] Speaker 3: against the Boilermakers with a backup quarterback in Elijah Brown. Mario,
[2:15] Speaker 3: did you feel like the offense found something maybe against Purdue?
[2:18] Speaker 3: Or do you shake your head and say, well, that
[2:20] Speaker 3: was the 114th best total defense in America.
[2:24] Speaker 2: Of course, they're going to look good against those guys.
[2:27] Speaker 4: No, I thought we found something. And I said it
[2:30] Speaker 4: after the game. I said we should go with Elijah
[2:33] Speaker 4: Brown off the gate. There should be no question. I
[2:37] Speaker 4: said the only thing that you could say is that
[2:39] Speaker 4: he threw three interceptions, so that leaves the door for DeMond.
[2:42] Speaker 4: But if I'm a receiver on the University of Washington's team,
[2:45] Speaker 4: I want Elijah Brown because he found the playmakers, and
[2:49] Speaker 4: that's what I've been complaining about the entire season, is
[2:52] Speaker 4: get the playmakers the ball. If you look at Desmond
[2:55] Speaker 4: Robach and you look at Chris Lawson, they got the ball.
[2:59] Speaker 4: They both had over 100 total yards in offense. Lost
[3:02] Speaker 4: in receiving. Robach had it for rushing and receiving. There's
[3:06] Speaker 4: no question on who should be starting just based on
[3:09] Speaker 4: a game and a half. I think he should be
[3:11] Speaker 4: the starter, but I understand the dynamics that they're going through.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. Well, let's go with that in a second,
[3:16] Speaker 2: all right? But just, Greg, before you. So you said
[3:18] Speaker 2: the dynamics.
[3:19] Speaker 5: What do you mean?
[3:19] Speaker 2: Like the $ 4 million is going to play a role?
[3:21] Speaker 2: The NIL is going to play a role?
[3:22] Speaker 4: No, I don't think the money plays a role because
[3:24] Speaker 4: the check is cash. But I do believe that there's
[3:27] Speaker 4: a relationship. You brought this young man from Arizona. You
[3:30] Speaker 4: have this relationship with him. And I think you can't
[3:33] Speaker 4: blame him completely for a bad season or a bad start.
[3:38] Speaker 4: And he's been starting. Do you lose your position based
[3:41] Speaker 4: off injury or do you lose your position based on
[3:44] Speaker 4: how somebody's playing? So I think the dynamics are there
[3:47] Speaker 4: for Coach to have an excuse to put DeMond in.
[3:50] Speaker 2: Got it. Greg, go ahead. So back to your original question.
[3:52] Speaker 2: I think it's both.
[3:53] Speaker 6: I mean, I think, yes, Elijah Brown is a better
[3:56] Speaker 6: fit for Jed Fish in the plays that he wants
[3:58] Speaker 6: to call. I think Elijah Brown made Jed Fish a
[4:01] Speaker 6: much better play caller. on Friday, and so that helped
[4:05] Speaker 6: the team. That put the team in a better position
[4:07] Speaker 6: to be able to win. I also think that Purdue
[4:09] Speaker 6: is a terrible defense. I think that this was a
[4:12] Speaker 6: great opportunity to ease Elijah Brown into the starting row,
[4:17] Speaker 6: kind of get a soft landing. You can say anything
[4:19] Speaker 6: you want about what Purdue did the week before against Nebraska,
[4:23] Speaker 6: I'm sorry, against Minnesota. But they are not a really
[4:26] Speaker 6: good football team. They're not really good on defense either.
[4:29] Speaker 6: But having said all of that, I think there was
[4:31] Speaker 6: enough for me that I saw on the progression of
[4:34] Speaker 6: this team, on the fit from the quarterback into the offense,
[4:40] Speaker 6: and how the coach all of a sudden became a
[4:42] Speaker 6: better play caller. I think had DeMond played, it would
[4:46] Speaker 6: have still been a struggle. It would have been a
[4:47] Speaker 6: struggle trying to get him to stay on script to
[4:49] Speaker 6: run Things the way Coach Fish wants him to run
[4:52] Speaker 6: things for him to stay in the pocket and be
[4:54] Speaker 6: calm because I think he's got heavy feet right now.
[4:57] Speaker 6: Whether there's a big pass rush coming or not, he's
[5:00] Speaker 6: moving around too much. He's still unable and incapable of
[5:03] Speaker 6: seeing all of the reads in front of him because of.
[5:06] Speaker 6: the way he looks at things in the offensive line
[5:08] Speaker 6: and his height and all of those. So I think
[5:10] Speaker 6: both things are true. Yes, it was a defense that
[5:13] Speaker 6: we could take advantage of, but I still think Elijah
[5:16] Speaker 6: Brown was a better quarterback to take advantage of that.
[5:18] Speaker 6: And for me, that also means going forward, you're going
[5:20] Speaker 6: to face a Nebraska team in a couple of weeks
[5:23] Speaker 6: that frankly held Oregon to 242 yards of total offense.
[5:26] Speaker 6: It's a good defense. So you got to be at
[5:28] Speaker 6: the max of where you are. As a defense in
[5:31] Speaker 6: order to, I'm sorry, offense to be able to score.
[5:34] Speaker 4: I don't think Oregon has a great offense. I think
[5:36] Speaker 4: their offensive coordinator is struggling. And I do think DeMond
[5:40] Speaker 4: has had a chance against Eastern Washington, Utah State and
[5:43] Speaker 4: Washington State. And those defenses weren't great, and we still
[5:46] Speaker 4: didn't do what Elijah Brown did against Purdue.
[5:48] Speaker 3: All right, well, let's do this because Jackson pulled the audio.
[5:51] Speaker 3: I don't want him working for nothing because he really
[5:53] Speaker 3: hates when he works for nothing. All right.
[5:54] Speaker 2: This is a good clip. It still fits. Let's go
[5:56] Speaker 2: back two weeks ago. We were talking about Elijah Brown.
[5:59] Speaker 3: This is after the, I believe, Minnesota game when we
[6:04] Speaker 3: talked about, hey, not necessarily starting Elijah, but maybe you
[6:07] Speaker 3: give him a series and get him onto the bench
[6:09] Speaker 3: to see things from a different perspective. And this is
[6:12] Speaker 3: what you, Greg Lewis, had to say on that day
[6:14] Speaker 3: when we asked you the question. I got people hitting
[6:16] Speaker 3: me up talking about whether or not we should give
[6:18] Speaker 3: Elijah Brown a couple of drives. Or is that nonsense
[6:21] Speaker 3: to you?
[6:22] Speaker 6: That is nonsense with a capital N to me. I'm
[6:25] Speaker 6: not saying demand is lighting the world on fire.
[6:27] Speaker 2: I'm sure.
[6:28] Speaker 6: He would want his performance to improve. But to all
[6:31] Speaker 6: of a sudden think that you're going to go to
[6:33] Speaker 6: the guy who gets less reps in practice, the guy
[6:36] Speaker 6: who has played major college football in a lesser division
[6:41] Speaker 6: and not had success is all of a sudden going
[6:44] Speaker 6: to come in here and take over this team and
[6:47] Speaker 6: be able to do something that he hasn't. you know,
[6:50] Speaker 6: had the opportunity to prepare to do day in and
[6:53] Speaker 6: day out. I don't think he's right.
[6:54] Speaker 2: Okay. You feel differently now?
[6:56] Speaker 1: Absolutely.
[6:56] Speaker 2: Sounds like you do. Yeah.
[6:58] Speaker 6: I don't know.
[6:59] Speaker 2: I mean, he went out and played well. So what
[7:01] Speaker 2: do you want me to say?
[7:02] Speaker 6: You know, Mike, I don't think anything I said there,
[7:05] Speaker 6: then I would take back because there are many times
[7:07] Speaker 6: a backup quarterback comes in and doesn't do well.
[7:09] Speaker 3: Right.
[7:09] Speaker 6: Because he's just the next best thing because the guy
[7:11] Speaker 6: who's in front of him isn't playing well. And there
[7:13] Speaker 6: wasn't any evidence in front of that of him playing
[7:17] Speaker 6: the last couple of weeks that said he's going to
[7:19] Speaker 6: come in and do well. So there was no evidence
[7:20] Speaker 6: of that. Now he's come in and he's played and
[7:23] Speaker 6: I've seen it with my own eyes and I think
[7:24] Speaker 6: he's a better fit. I think the biggest thing, though,
[7:27] Speaker 6: to me really is, is he makes Jed Fish more comfortable.
[7:31] Speaker 6: Jed Fish believes that Elijah Brown will do what he
[7:35] Speaker 6: asks him to do in this offense, which is to
[7:38] Speaker 6: stand in there, look downfield, go from your first to
[7:41] Speaker 6: your second to your third read and not get off script.
[7:44] Speaker 6: DeMond Williams, that's his best attribute is getting off script.
[7:47] Speaker 6: And Jed Fish, I think you can see it, is
[7:49] Speaker 6: driving him crazy. I mean, you can see Jed Fish's
[7:52] Speaker 6: frustration when DeMond gets sacked or the fumble happens or
[7:56] Speaker 6: he gets out of the pocket too soon or he
[7:58] Speaker 6: misses the read. And so for him, Elijah Brown gives
[8:01] Speaker 6: him the ability to get back in his bag and say,
[8:03] Speaker 6: all right, this is the type of quarterback I want
[8:06] Speaker 6: to call plays for.
[8:07] Speaker 2: Because Elijah Brown's not going to take off running. You
[8:08] Speaker 2: know why?
[8:09] Speaker 5: No.
[8:09] Speaker 2: Because he can't.
[8:10] Speaker 5: Right.
[8:10] Speaker 2: He's not very good at that.
[8:11] Speaker 5: Right.
[8:11] Speaker 6: So he's going to stand in there and he'll take
[8:13] Speaker 6: the hit if he has to. And he doesn't have
[8:15] Speaker 6: heavy feet because guess what?
[8:16] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:16] Speaker 3: He hasn't been sacked 18 times over the last three weeks.
[8:18] Speaker 3: So you would both start him at Nebraska?
[8:21] Speaker 2: Absolutely. Is that what I'm saying?
[8:22] Speaker 5: Without question.
[8:23] Speaker 3: Okay, what do you think he does? What do you
[8:25] Speaker 3: think Jed does? That's a tougher question.
[8:29] Speaker 6: And the reason I say that is Jed Fish is
[8:32] Speaker 6: just sometimes a different kind of guy. But ultimately, I
[8:35] Speaker 6: think he will end up starting Elijah is what I
[8:38] Speaker 6: think will happen. Now, I've gone on record and said this.
[8:41] Speaker 6: Because I think I heard kind of some whispers. He said,
[8:44] Speaker 6: I'm going to give him both reps and.
[8:45] Speaker 2: Blah, blah, blah.
[8:46] Speaker 3: Which you can do this week because you're not playing.
[8:48] Speaker 3: You can do that this week because you're not playing.
[8:51] Speaker 3: I wouldn't.
[8:51] Speaker 2: Again, that's just me.
[8:53] Speaker 6: The reason being because I just believe so much in preparation.
[8:56] Speaker 6: To me, preparation is the best thing you can do.
[8:59] Speaker 6: And if Elijah Brown has only gotten starter reps for
[9:02] Speaker 6: one week this whole season, I'm going to get him
[9:04] Speaker 6: as many reps as I can over the next two weeks.
[9:06] Speaker 2: I get it. To be ultimately prepared.
[9:07] Speaker 3: Yes.
[9:08] Speaker 2: I get because they have a bye.
[9:09] Speaker 6: You can tinker with it maybe Monday, Tuesday, or however
[9:12] Speaker 6: your practice schedule is. But I would be getting the
[9:15] Speaker 6: guy who I want to play prepared. And to me,
[9:18] Speaker 6: based on what kind of offense you want to run, Coach,
[9:21] Speaker 6: I'm going with Elijah. You've seen DeMond for a year
[9:24] Speaker 6: and a half.
[9:24] Speaker 3: 21 games.
[9:25] Speaker 2: And even a little more than that.
[9:27] Speaker 5: Well, I told you, as a receiver.
[9:30] Speaker 4: I'm going with Elijah Brown because the receivers want him
[9:34] Speaker 4: to be in there. They're not going to say it publicly,
[9:36] Speaker 4: and you can do what you want behind closed doors.
[9:38] Speaker 4: But those receivers got the ball, and they got it
[9:41] Speaker 4: the entire game. They look like a great receiving corpse.
[9:45] Speaker 4: They look like some great playmakers. The thing about Coach Fish,
[9:49] Speaker 4: Greg said he's in his bag. He shocked me a
[9:51] Speaker 4: little bit because he got the playmakers the ball. Even
[9:54] Speaker 4: if it was DeMond, he put Desmond Robach in the backfield.
[9:58] Speaker 4: He got five rushes. He got the playmakers touches. And
[10:02] Speaker 4: that's all I've been complaining about the entire season is
[10:05] Speaker 4: offensive coordinator figures out ways to get the players different touches.
[10:09] Speaker 4: He figured out a different way besides it being Elijah
[10:12] Speaker 4: Brown throwing it to him. He got Roebuck the ball
[10:14] Speaker 4: in different capacities. He even put the running backs out.
[10:19] Speaker 2: Wide.
[10:20] Speaker 4: He put Desmond in the running back spot.
[10:24] Speaker 5: He moved them around.
[10:25] Speaker 4: Besides being in his bag, he moved the playmakers around
[10:28] Speaker 4: and figured out different ways to get on the ball.
[10:29] Speaker 2: Part of the Roebuck thing was out of necessity.
[10:31] Speaker 5: Let's be honest.
[10:32] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[10:32] Speaker 2: Because you lost. You could have thought of that earlier.
[10:35] Speaker 1: Right.
[10:36] Speaker 2: Well, OK.
[10:36] Speaker 5: Besides them getting hurt.
[10:38] Speaker 3: They absolutely could have used him in that role earlier
[10:42] Speaker 3: in the year. I'm saying it happened because Bonner and
[10:45] Speaker 3: Cooley both got hurt. And who knows what Cooley's availability
[10:49] Speaker 3: is going to be for the game against Nebraska. You
[10:51] Speaker 3: may see more of Roebuck. You may see more Chris Lawson,
[10:54] Speaker 3: Cade Eldridge all carried the ball because those guys both
[10:58] Speaker 3: got banged up. But again, I agree with it to you.
[11:02] Speaker 3: I would start Elijah Brown. I think DeMond Williams' days
[11:05] Speaker 3: as a Husky quarterback are not necessarily over, but they're
[11:08] Speaker 3: certainly numbered.
[11:09] Speaker 2: I do not see him back here next year. I
[11:11] Speaker 2: don't know what your take is on that, Greg.
[11:13] Speaker 3: And I think that if you want to keep this
[11:15] Speaker 3: locker room together– I mean, you tell me, what kind
[11:18] Speaker 3: of reaction would there be? You think of Jed Fish
[11:20] Speaker 3: went back to DeMond Williams. Would that have been a
[11:22] Speaker 3: problem in a locker room like yours back in the day?
[11:24] Speaker 6: I don't think if Coach James did it, it wouldn't
[11:26] Speaker 6: be a problem. We don't have an opinion other than
[11:28] Speaker 6: what Coach James is doing. And he's going to make
[11:31] Speaker 6: the call and we're just going to fall in line.
[11:33] Speaker 2: So that's simple. Whatever he says is the right thing. Man,
[11:35] Speaker 2: I'll say this. And we said this in the postgame.
[11:38] Speaker 6: I know you were, you know, on the plane, probably
[11:40] Speaker 6: with the team on your way, eating your what a
[11:41] Speaker 6: kind of a sandwich they gave you guys after the
[11:43] Speaker 6: game and weren't listening to us.
[11:45] Speaker 2: I was listening to you on the bus, by the way,
[11:47] Speaker 2: driving back to Indy.
[11:49] Speaker 6: I said something that probably could never happen. But me,
[11:53] Speaker 6: I'm going to Demond Williams. And I'm not going to
[11:56] Speaker 6: say this, but I'm thinking as a coaching staff, we
[11:58] Speaker 6: invested $ 4 million in this guy. He's still one of
[12:00] Speaker 6: the best athletes, not only on this team, but in
[12:03] Speaker 6: college football. So I'm going to find a way, even
[12:06] Speaker 6: if I move him out of the quarterback starting role,
[12:08] Speaker 6: to have a role on this team to benefit us.
[12:12] Speaker 6: And maybe that's a Wildcat quarterback type of situation, a
[12:16] Speaker 6: short yardage or goal line, something where he can contribute. Now,
[12:20] Speaker 6: a kid like DeMond, he's got to put his ego aside.
[12:23] Speaker 6: He's the starting quarterback, but I still have a role.
[12:26] Speaker 6: I still want to help this team win football games.
[12:28] Speaker 6: That's what I would be doing right now if I'm
[12:30] Speaker 6: the coaching staff with DeMar Williams.
[12:32] Speaker 3: By the way, just for the record, I don't know
[12:34] Speaker 3: if you heard me say this on the air Friday.
[12:36] Speaker 3: He was there. He was dressed. He's dressed five guys
[12:40] Speaker 3: before the game. And during the entire game, he was phenomenal.
[12:45] Speaker 3: He was sitting there watching tape with Elijah, pouring over
[12:47] Speaker 3: the iPad. He was rooting guys on when they would
[12:50] Speaker 3: make a great play. He was among the first Mario
[12:52] Speaker 3: on the field to greet the guys as they came
[12:54] Speaker 3: off the field. If you thought there was going to
[12:57] Speaker 3: be a sulking type thing, I saw none of that
[13:00] Speaker 3: from DeMond Williams.
[13:01] Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's absolutely perfect. That's what he should be.
[13:04] Speaker 4: He's a captain of the team, and he's part of
[13:06] Speaker 4: this team. And like I said, the check is cash. Like,
[13:09] Speaker 4: this young man should be doing that. He has four
[13:11] Speaker 4: billion reasons to root for these guys. Yeah, but, you know,
[13:14] Speaker 4: he could choose the other route, but I'm happy and
[13:17] Speaker 4: proud that that's how he chose to do. And, you know,
[13:20] Speaker 4: one thing I see about Coach Fish is he's a
[13:22] Speaker 4: loyal guy as we watch. Like, he's the guy that
[13:26] Speaker 4: Coach James would take Greg out if he needed 1,000
[13:30] Speaker 4: yards and he had 980. He's still going to take
[13:32] Speaker 4: Greg out and tell him to sit over here.
[13:34] Speaker 5: Same with me.
[13:35] Speaker 4: Coach James, you know, Coach Fish, if a guy can
[13:38] Speaker 4: get four touchdowns, break a record, he's going to put
[13:40] Speaker 4: him in. If a guy can play and get an
[13:43] Speaker 4: incentive or something, Coach Fish is going to do it.
[13:45] Speaker 4: So he's been a loyal guy to his players. And
[13:48] Speaker 4: that's why I think he's going to have a very
[13:50] Speaker 4: tough time. Not putting DeMond in this game.
[13:53] Speaker 3: Do you think if they had been going to Elijah
[13:56] Speaker 3: Brown earlier, which is easy now to say, right? I mean,
[14:00] Speaker 3: there was no reason, no sense of any reason to
[14:03] Speaker 3: go to Elijah Brown three, four weeks ago.
[14:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I was saying.
[14:07] Speaker 3: Five games for this thing to kind of fall apart
[14:09] Speaker 3: where they said, okay, enough is enough, obviously. And really
[14:11] Speaker 3: what it took is DeMond getting hurt. If he hadn't
[14:14] Speaker 3: hurt his ribs, who knows? He may have started him, Greg,
[14:16] Speaker 3: against Purdue and kept the whole thing going. But have
[14:19] Speaker 3: you seen enough out of him to think that just
[14:21] Speaker 3: maybe in some alternate universe, if they were playing him.
[14:25] Speaker 2: Earlier, they may have won a game or two that
[14:28] Speaker 2: they lost.
[14:28] Speaker 6: Yeah, because I don't look at the teams that we've
[14:31] Speaker 6: lost in so far and go, oh, my God, those
[14:33] Speaker 6: are world beaters. Those are teams that we absolutely could
[14:35] Speaker 6: not beat if we played better football. Hell, we could
[14:37] Speaker 6: have won some of those games with DeMond Williams in
[14:40] Speaker 6: the game had we played better all around. So I
[14:43] Speaker 6: certainly think Elijah Brown could have helped us. win some games.
[14:46] Speaker 6: But that's all folly. That's, you know, water under the bridge. That's,
[14:49] Speaker 6: you know, things have already happened. Playing that what-if game
[14:52] Speaker 6: isn't going to do anybody any good.
[14:53] Speaker 5: Right.
[14:53] Speaker 3: And here's the thing about the Purdue game, guys. They actually,
[14:56] Speaker 3: they should have kicked their ass. I mean, they had, what,
[14:59] Speaker 3: 13 points. that were scored off turnovers.
[15:02] Speaker 2: Five turnovers. They get the ball at the 19, Husky 19.
[15:06] Speaker 3: After a pick, the 40 after a pick, the 10
[15:08] Speaker 3: after the ball went off Dylan Robinson's foot on the
[15:11] Speaker 3: kick return, and they score an easy touchdown there.
[15:14] Speaker 2: I mean, the defense really only gave up two drives.
[15:16] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[15:17] Speaker 3: In the game, they had an 8-play 87-yard drive and
[15:19] Speaker 3: a 7-play 75-yard drive, and that was it. And then Ejiboy,
[15:23] Speaker 3: who went bananas against Minnesota the week before, bucked 95,
[15:27] Speaker 3: had 13 carries and 19 yards. They were the way
[15:30] Speaker 3: better team with a backup quarterback on Friday night.
[15:32] Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought Purdue gave up on the run game,
[15:35] Speaker 4: but it's just like us. We started out early on them.
[15:38] Speaker 4: We did give up five turnovers, but we started out early,
[15:41] Speaker 4: and they abandoned the run. I thought our defense gave
[15:44] Speaker 4: up a few too many big plays. Like they might've
[15:47] Speaker 4: gave up four 50 yard plays or something, a couple
[15:49] Speaker 4: of 40 yards and a couple of 50 yards. But
[15:51] Speaker 4: other than that, the defense played well. If you turn
[15:54] Speaker 4: over the ball five times, you're supposed to lose every time.
[15:56] Speaker 1: Right.
[15:57] Speaker 6: Which is why I said at the beginning when you
[15:59] Speaker 6: asked the first question, was this Elijah Brown and the
[16:01] Speaker 6: Huskies playing great or Purdue being a bad football team?
[16:04] Speaker 2: I said it's both.
[16:05] Speaker 6: Because when you actually get five turnovers in your favor
[16:08] Speaker 6: at home, you are supposed to win. Only a bad
[16:11] Speaker 6: team can turn five turnovers, plus four or five or
[16:15] Speaker 6: whatever they were in the turnover battle at home into
[16:16] Speaker 6: a loss.
[16:17] Speaker 4: Only a bad team does that. But I will say
[16:18] Speaker 4: this for Elijah. Like, we said Iowa... tapered off or
[16:24] Speaker 4: they weren't coming at him as well in the second
[16:27] Speaker 4: half yeah and we're saying Purdue's a horrible defense now
[16:30] Speaker 4: if he goes and does it against Nebraska right are
[16:32] Speaker 4: we going to continue to say no not at all.
[16:34] Speaker 6: But I said both Mario I did say I think
[16:36] Speaker 6: you're right credit.
[16:37] Speaker 3: Well because guys we've seen the Husky offense struggle against
[16:41] Speaker 3: bad defenses Absolutely.
[16:43] Speaker 2: Did you not watch the Apple Cup? Absolutely.
[16:45] Speaker 1: Right?
[16:45] Speaker 2: Utah State.
[16:46] Speaker 1: Right.
[16:47] Speaker 3: I mean, the Cougs are 103rd in the country. Utah
[16:50] Speaker 3: State's 76th. And we look terrible against those guys. So
[16:54] Speaker 3: I don't think we're in any position to be picky
[16:57] Speaker 3: about who we're playing right now as long as we're
[16:59] Speaker 3: playing well. They needed to look competent on offense, at
[17:03] Speaker 3: least competent, and they did that.
[17:05] Speaker 2: 100%. This is my only caution, Softie. is, yes, we
[17:09] Speaker 2: play better. We look better.
[17:10] Speaker 6: I give Elijah Brown credit. You are not going to
[17:12] Speaker 6: beat Nebraska or any other good football team turning the
[17:14] Speaker 6: ball over five times.
[17:15] Speaker 2: No question.
[17:16] Speaker 6: You will not. And so my only thing is, yes,
[17:18] Speaker 6: we play better. We got to play better than that
[17:21] Speaker 6: because the competition we played against this week was not
[17:23] Speaker 6: what we're going to see. all the way through the
[17:25] Speaker 6: rest of the season. We may have two games where
[17:27] Speaker 6: we might have more talent than the other team the
[17:29] Speaker 6: rest of the way.
[17:29] Speaker 3: Well, you're going from a team that was 94th against
[17:32] Speaker 3: the run to a team that's 23rd, a team that
[17:34] Speaker 3: was 114th total defense to a team that's 11th in Nebraska.
[17:38] Speaker 3: So this is a totally different animal. So, I mean,
[17:41] Speaker 3: what we haven't talked about yet is the running game.
[17:44] Speaker 3: I mean, they look competent. Again, did you see anything?
[17:48] Speaker 3: Your boy Trey Cooley, who you said game of his life.
[17:51] Speaker 3: You were done with two weeks ago.
[17:53] Speaker 2: He says, suck on that, Greg. Are you kidding me?
[17:56] Speaker 6: Hey, you know what they say? A broken clock is
[17:59] Speaker 6: right twice a day.
[18:00] Speaker 2: Guy goes out and plays his balls off on Friday night.
[18:03] Speaker 2: And I appreciate it. I'm glad. And I hope he
[18:05] Speaker 2: heard what I said. He may have. And that motivated him.
[18:08] Speaker 2: Because if that's the case, Trey Cooley, you're terrible. I
[18:11] Speaker 2: can't stand it.
[18:12] Speaker 3: No.
[18:12] Speaker 1: Absolutely.
[18:13] Speaker 6: I'm proud of that young man. I'm happy for him.
[18:16] Speaker 2: But... Having said that, he was one of them five turnovers,
[18:20] Speaker 2: wasn't he?
[18:20] Speaker 5: He didn't end it.
[18:22] Speaker 2: Hold that thought. Hold that thought. We'll get more on that.
[18:25] Speaker 3: Did the Huskies find a run game that we believe
[18:27] Speaker 3: can maybe show itself against Purdue? And you're 4-3. How
[18:31] Speaker 3: do we see the rest of this thing going? Nebraska, Saturday, Halloween,
[18:34] Speaker 3: bye this week. Both teams have a bye, actually. Nebraska
[18:37] Speaker 3: and the Huskies. So we'll get to all that and more.
[18:40] Speaker 3: How about this defense, man, too? We've got to talk
[18:42] Speaker 3: about the defense a little bit. I mean, that Iowa game...
[18:44] Speaker 3: The further we get away from it just looks like
[18:47] Speaker 3: more of an outlier on that Friday night, right?
[18:49] Speaker 2: Guys against the Hawkeyes. Get to all that and more.
[18:51] Speaker 3: Husky Honks brought to you by our friends at Frostbrood,
[18:53] Speaker 3: Coors Light, Hyder Construction, our friends at Delta Airlines as well.
[18:57] Speaker 2: Continues next on 93.3 KJRFM.
[19:01] Speaker 1: Now back to the Coors Light Husky Honks on Tuesdays.
[19:04] Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. By Mitsubishi Electric
[19:09] Speaker 1: Heating and Air Conditioning. By UA Local 32. By Clearwater Casino.
[19:16] Speaker 1: And by Delta Airlines. On your home for the Huskies.
[19:20] Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
[19:23] Speaker 2: Bonner, quick toss right side.
[19:25] Speaker 3: He's gone to the 10 and into the end zone.
[19:29] Speaker 2: Down the right side, it is.
[19:32] Speaker 3: Bonner with the catch for the touchdown.
[19:35] Speaker 2: His first as a Husky.
[19:38] Speaker 3: It is a 25-yard reception for the true freshman Brian Bonner.
[19:43] Speaker 2: All right, we are back.
[19:45] Speaker 3: Big thanks to our friends at Hyder Construction, Delta Airlines,
[19:48] Speaker 3: Mitsubishi Electric. Heating and Air, our friends at AAA Washington.
[19:54] Speaker 3: Does anybody want to do a defensive player of the game,
[19:56] Speaker 3: by the way, from the game on Friday night?
[20:00] Speaker 2: Against Purdue. Defense played pretty damn good, right?
[20:02] Speaker 3: I mean, you held a guy in Egypt, boy, who
[20:04] Speaker 3: went for a buck 95 against Minnesota to 13 carries
[20:07] Speaker 3: for 19 yards and about half of Purdue's points, Greg,
[20:11] Speaker 3: came off turnovers by the Huskies that gave the Boilermakers
[20:13] Speaker 3: good field position.
[20:15] Speaker 2: So how about the way the defense played, man, on Friday? Yeah,
[20:18] Speaker 2: I thought they played pretty well as a unit.
[20:20] Speaker 6: I think we are continuing to see that our coach,
[20:23] Speaker 6: Ryan Walters, is a good game planner, a good scheme guy.
[20:26] Speaker 2: He gets guys right there at the point.
[20:29] Speaker 6: Of attack Now, we still have struggled a little bit
[20:31] Speaker 6: with missed tackles, and I think that's where the big
[20:33] Speaker 6: plays that Mario talked about really come from, guys that
[20:37] Speaker 6: should have been tackled. Maybe it's a 10-yard gain or
[20:40] Speaker 6: a 12-yard gain, but we allowed it to be a
[20:41] Speaker 6: 40-yard gain, and unfortunately for us, that still happens. But overall,
[20:45] Speaker 6: the defense played much better. When you take a guy
[20:47] Speaker 6: who the last week went for 195, you hold him
[20:49] Speaker 6: at 13.
[20:50] Speaker 2: I'm not going to complain too much about that.
[20:52] Speaker 6: I'm going to give them credit for being good and
[20:55] Speaker 6: playing a good game plan. We just got to tackle
[20:57] Speaker 6: a little bit better.
[20:58] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[20:59] Speaker 3: I like Jaron Jones. The pick that he had on
[21:00] Speaker 3: the sideline was right in front of me. For a
[21:02] Speaker 3: freshman to make a play like that, that was pretty impressive.
[21:05] Speaker 4: He's a bad man. We're going to see him. He's
[21:07] Speaker 4: going to be one of our playmakers of the future.
[21:09] Speaker 4: I think every time he gets a chance, he makes
[21:11] Speaker 4: a few plays. But if we're talking about defensive player,
[21:14] Speaker 4: I think we went with Dillard Allen. A little bit
[21:17] Speaker 4: of everywhere. The team played great. And when you get
[21:20] Speaker 4: three sacks and a couple turnovers, that makes the difference.
[21:23] Speaker 6: And the thing I loved about him is we talk
[21:25] Speaker 6: about him being one of those guys who can go
[21:28] Speaker 6: over the edge. He played right up to the edge
[21:30] Speaker 6: this game. He was, you know, aggressive. He was, you know, emotional.
[21:34] Speaker 6: But he didn't allow it to carry over and cause
[21:36] Speaker 6: him to create a 15-yard penalty.
[21:38] Speaker 2: And he made some big plays for the Hawks. Okay,
[21:40] Speaker 2: so if I would have told you.
[21:42] Speaker 3: that Minnesota ran for 27 yards on Purdue a week
[21:46] Speaker 3: and a half ago, that same defense that shut down
[21:50] Speaker 3: Minnesota's rushing attack would allow the Huskies in their vaunted
[21:54] Speaker 3: running game to go for $ 1.
[21:56] Speaker 2: 86. Would you have bought that? No! For any part
[22:00] Speaker 2: of you that would.
[22:01] Speaker 3: Have seen Washington coming close to running for 200 yards
[22:04] Speaker 3: in any game this year, Greg Lewis?
[22:06] Speaker 2: Absolutely not.
[22:07] Speaker 6: I mean, I'm just going to be honest. And this
[22:10] Speaker 6: to me, I still need to go back and watch
[22:12] Speaker 6: that game against Minnesota. Just actually see what they did
[22:16] Speaker 6: in order to shut them down because I didn't see
[22:18] Speaker 6: that coming. And I can be honest with you. I
[22:22] Speaker 6: think our offensive line played their best game of the
[22:24] Speaker 6: year by far. I mean, it's not even close. I
[22:27] Speaker 6: think maybe having Landon Hatchett back for his second game,
[22:30] Speaker 6: take him off the.
[22:31] Speaker 2: Pitch count a little bit. He's a little less rusty.
[22:34] Speaker 6: Some guys probably looking themselves in the mirror over the
[22:37] Speaker 6: last week and saying, hey, we got to step up.
[22:39] Speaker 2: We got to play better.
[22:40] Speaker 6: And I think sometimes when the backup quarterback comes in,
[22:44] Speaker 6: And we know he's not an elusive guy. The offensive
[22:47] Speaker 6: line's like, I got to hold my block a little longer.
[22:49] Speaker 6: I got to be a little better. I think the
[22:51] Speaker 6: level of play from our offensive line, and we talk
[22:55] Speaker 6: about gut check time and having some pride and all
[22:57] Speaker 6: of that. To me, the offensive line in particular stepped
[23:02] Speaker 6: up and had some pride. And that bowled well because
[23:05] Speaker 6: your running backs are never going to have a good
[23:06] Speaker 6: game unless your offensive line plays well.
[23:08] Speaker 4: I think it's one of those things where I keep saying, like,
[23:11] Speaker 4: we got an early start. We didn't have to throw
[23:13] Speaker 4: the ball 40 times. We could intentionally run the ball
[23:17] Speaker 4: because we got it out ahead. The last few games,
[23:19] Speaker 4: we're getting our butts kicked. And so we're going to
[23:21] Speaker 4: have to pass it. And once we're passing 40 and
[23:23] Speaker 4: 50 times a game, we're most likely going to lose.
[23:26] Speaker 4: But I think Elijah Brown passed like 27 times between
[23:29] Speaker 4: Bonner and Greg's favorite guy. I think they got 20 carries.
[23:34] Speaker 4: Add Desmond Robox, five carries. That's perfect for us, and
[23:38] Speaker 4: that's what a great offense can do.
[23:40] Speaker 2: Well, I'm looking at the continued matchups for me.
[23:43] Speaker 3: I don't know if you guys agree or not. As
[23:46] Speaker 3: the year goes by, it's going to be what can
[23:47] Speaker 3: our offense do against the opposing team's defense.
[23:50] Speaker 1: Sure.
[23:50] Speaker 2: Okay, because you feel good about the defense for the
[23:52] Speaker 2: most part. For the most part.
[23:53] Speaker 3: They're going to show up and keep you in the game.
[23:55] Speaker 3: I mean, the Iowa game, like I said to the break,
[23:56] Speaker 3: kind of feels like a sore thumb right now. A
[23:58] Speaker 3: little bit of an outlier, right?
[24:00] Speaker 2: I don't disagree.
[24:01] Speaker 6: And when I look at the offenses that we play,
[24:03] Speaker 6: the teams that we play, I think, are built around big, strong,
[24:05] Speaker 6: solid defenses.
[24:06] Speaker 2: They're not necessarily offensive juggernauts.
[24:09] Speaker 1: Right.
[24:09] Speaker 6: Indiana's playing well, right? They're playing well, but they still
[24:13] Speaker 6: aren't scoring 30 and 40 points a game. So you
[24:16] Speaker 6: can still be in that game if your defense is
[24:18] Speaker 6: playing well. Mario talked about he's not really that impressed
[24:21] Speaker 6: with Oregon's offense and their play calling. So your defense
[24:24] Speaker 6: plays well. They keep you in these football games.
[24:26] Speaker 3: Well, I'm looking at a Nebraska defense, and we talked
[24:29] Speaker 3: about this earlier, that is 16th in scoring, 11th in
[24:33] Speaker 3: total D, 23rd against the run, 21st in sacks, and
[24:38] Speaker 3: they are No. 1 in the country on third down defense. 19%
[24:43] Speaker 3: on third down. Who have they played besides Oregon? Okay,
[24:48] Speaker 3: would you like to know Nebraska's schedule?
[24:49] Speaker 2: They played Indiana. They played Oregon. Those two I know.
[24:54] Speaker 5: Okay.
[24:55] Speaker 3: Here's who Nebraska's played. You want to go down that
[24:57] Speaker 3: road and start nitpicking, that's fine.
[24:58] Speaker 2: Yes.
[24:59] Speaker 3: Nebraska has played, blah, blah, blah, bringing their schedule up
[25:02] Speaker 3: right now. Talk amongst yourselves. Ohio, not Ohio State, Bowling Green,
[25:06] Speaker 3: North Dakota, Michigan State, Maryland, but then Indiana, Oregon. They
[25:10] Speaker 3: held Indiana to 20 and the Ducks to 17.
[25:12] Speaker 6: They played well the last two weeks, though, Mario. I've
[25:15] Speaker 6: watched them play the last couple of weeks. I was
[25:18] Speaker 6: impressed with them when I saw the Indiana game. So
[25:21] Speaker 6: I've kind of been paying attention to them a little bit. And,
[25:23] Speaker 6: you know, they used to have the old thing, the
[25:25] Speaker 6: black shirts, where their defense was really strong and good
[25:27] Speaker 6: and they played tough. They're looking kind of like that.
[25:29] Speaker 6: They're trying to rebuild the reputation of Nebraska football around
[25:33] Speaker 6: a strong, tough, stingy defense. And right now their defense
[25:35] Speaker 6: looks good. It's going to take everything we can over
[25:38] Speaker 6: these next two weeks. That's why I'm like, get your
[25:41] Speaker 6: starting quarterback chosen right now. Right. And give him every
[25:43] Speaker 6: rep you can get to prepare him to play against
[25:45] Speaker 6: these guys. Those other five teams you named. But everybody's
[25:49] Speaker 6: got that kind of schedule, though.
[25:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, they are.
[25:51] Speaker 3: And I would feel like you do if they hadn't
[25:53] Speaker 3: played Indiana and Oregon. And they played very well against
[25:56] Speaker 3: those guys. I mean, here's going to be a major
[25:57] Speaker 3: factor in this game, obviously, as you're talking about a
[26:00] Speaker 3: team in Washington that played Purdue a week ago. It
[26:03] Speaker 3: was 4 of 7 on third down, so pretty good
[26:05] Speaker 3: on third down.
[26:05] Speaker 2: A lot better. But they're still 117th in the country.
[26:07] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[26:08] Speaker 5: Got a lot of making up to do.
[26:09] Speaker 3: Against the number one third down percentage defense in college football.
[26:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's tough.
[26:15] Speaker 3: Right?
[26:15] Speaker 2: Hey, we better move the chains on second down.
[26:17] Speaker 3: You better win the game 6-3.
[26:20] Speaker 2: First and second down, move the heck out the football.
[26:22] Speaker 4: It's going to come down again until I keep saying
[26:24] Speaker 4: it's how we start. If we start off and they're
[26:27] Speaker 4: coming at us. It's going to be a long day.
[26:29] Speaker 3: Let's get a break, come back, and wrap it up
[26:31] Speaker 3: more with the Husky Honks. Revisit the quarterback situation again.
[26:35] Speaker 3: The wide receivers kind of went off. Did you see somebody, Mario,
[26:38] Speaker 3: that you really liked in that game on Friday night? And,
[26:41] Speaker 3: you know, how do we kind of foresee the rest
[26:44] Speaker 3: of the year going? You have five games, and there's
[26:46] Speaker 3: winnable games, right, on that schedule, including Penn State coming here,
[26:50] Speaker 3: Michigan State going there. Who knows what Oregon's quarterback situation
[26:53] Speaker 3: is going to look like as the year goes by.
[26:55] Speaker 3: Get to all that with Greg and Mario next on
[26:57] Speaker 3: 93.3 KJR FM.
[27:01] Speaker 1: Now back to the Coors Light Husky Honks on Tuesdays.
[27:04] Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. By Mitsubishi Electric
[27:08] Speaker 1: Heating and Air Conditioning. By UA Local 32. By Clearwater Casino.
[27:15] Speaker 1: And by Delta Airlines. On your home for the Huskies.
[27:19] Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
[27:23] Speaker 2: Ball on the right hash. Brown takes the shotgun snap.
[27:25] Speaker 2: Hands off to Cooley. A big hole to the 40,
[27:28] Speaker 2: to the 30. He might be gone, and he is.
[27:33] Speaker 1: Trey Cooley down the sideline.
[27:36] Speaker 2: A 53-yard touchdown, and the Dogs take a two-score lead.
[27:41] Speaker 3: Telling you, man, does anybody here remember Joe Cooley back
[27:45] Speaker 3: in the day?
[27:46] Speaker 2: Joe Cooley. Of course, man. I remember Joe Cooley.
[27:48] Speaker 3: Joe Cooley, man. Trey Joe Cooley. Running down the field,
[27:52] Speaker 3: flipping off Greg Lewis. Suck on that, old man.
[27:56] Speaker 2: You like that? But now he's hurt. He's got the shoulder.
[27:58] Speaker 3: So if Brian Bonner is your only real healthy back
[28:02] Speaker 3: for the game against Nebraska, I mean, Riken Moon got
[28:06] Speaker 3: some time out there.
[28:07] Speaker 2: Young Moon, yeah.
[28:07] Speaker 3: He played, who knows about Lamar and Quade Carr and
[28:11] Speaker 3: Jordan Washington, I would say probably not yet, right? Maybe
[28:14] Speaker 3: late November, mid-November potentially. But what's your plan at running
[28:18] Speaker 3: back if Brian Bonner is the only healthy guy you got?
[28:20] Speaker 2: Desmond Robot. I mean, literally, that's where you're at.
[28:24] Speaker 6: But, you know, like I said, where's a package that
[28:27] Speaker 6: you bring DeMond Williams in where he's running the ball
[28:30] Speaker 6: more than he's throwing the ball? And I know that
[28:32] Speaker 6: sounds a little far-fetched or whatever, but Once you get desperate,
[28:36] Speaker 6: you've got to start doing it. I've never seen a
[28:37] Speaker 6: team that has one healthy running back. I mean, think
[28:40] Speaker 6: about it. You have, what, six scholarship running backs, and
[28:43] Speaker 6: now you have one healthy scholarship?
[28:44] Speaker 2: They only had three dressed for the game.
[28:46] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[28:46] Speaker 2: Where's Ansu Sano? Where's he at? He was hurt. He's hurt, too?
[28:49] Speaker 6: Yeah, hurt.
[28:49] Speaker 5: Oh, my God.
[28:50] Speaker 2: He was hurt Friday.
[28:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, hurt.
[28:52] Speaker 2: So you got one healthy out of six or seven guys.
[28:54] Speaker 6: Yes.
[28:54] Speaker 2: So you got to start doing desperate.
[28:56] Speaker 6: I mean, literally, you got to start doing desperate things.
[28:58] Speaker 2: Ryken Moon is like your seventh guy.
[29:00] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[29:00] Speaker 2: And he made the trip on Friday because he had to.
[29:03] Speaker 3: Yeah. So if you're DeMond and they come to you
[29:05] Speaker 3: and they say, hey, we need you to get in
[29:07] Speaker 3: there and carry the ball, do you do it?
[29:08] Speaker 5: Yes, no different.
[29:09] Speaker 2: In this day and age, does he say yes?
[29:11] Speaker 5: Well, we talked about this on the post-game show.
[29:13] Speaker 4: It's one of those things where are you doing everything
[29:16] Speaker 4: it takes for this team to win? Are you one
[29:19] Speaker 4: of these guys that has to be quarterback for the
[29:21] Speaker 4: rest of your life? Right now, we're trying to win
[29:23] Speaker 4: some games and prepare for the future and get us
[29:26] Speaker 4: to a bowl game. I think DeMond's supposed to do
[29:28] Speaker 4: whatever it takes, whether that's cheerleading on the sideline, whether
[29:32] Speaker 4: that's being a running back, whether it's being option, whatever
[29:34] Speaker 4: we can. DeMond is our best athlete on the entire team.
[29:38] Speaker 4: So we should figure out where... to get him the ball.
[29:41] Speaker 4: If we don't start him, we got to figure out
[29:42] Speaker 4: ways to get this young man the ball.
[29:44] Speaker 2: I mean, you start building that package right now. You
[29:46] Speaker 2: got two weeks, right?
[29:47] Speaker 6: We talk about, you know, having this bye week and
[29:49] Speaker 6: an opportunity to do something different. If I got one
[29:52] Speaker 6: running back, I am doing something different.
[29:54] Speaker 2: You know why?
[29:55] Speaker 6: One running back going up against one of the top
[29:57] Speaker 6: defenses in the country, there's a chance that at some
[30:00] Speaker 6: point during the game, he gets nicked up, he gets
[30:03] Speaker 6: banged up and maybe have to come out for a
[30:04] Speaker 6: couple of series or plays. So you got to have
[30:07] Speaker 6: another package. And I think what it does when you
[30:11] Speaker 6: bring DeMond Williams out there in that kind of role,
[30:13] Speaker 6: and Nebraska hasn't seen you do that, it makes them
[30:16] Speaker 6: now have to scramble and figure out what they're going
[30:17] Speaker 6: to do.
[30:18] Speaker 2: So I would be working on that right now.
[30:19] Speaker 3: Well, I'm trying to figure out what Nebraska does poorly
[30:22] Speaker 3: on defense, and I'm not seeing it. 16th in scoring,
[30:25] Speaker 3: 11th in total D, 23rd against the run, 21st in sacks, No.
[30:28] Speaker 3: 1 on third down, 22nd in pass D. I did
[30:32] Speaker 3: find two things they don't do very well. They get
[30:35] Speaker 3: called for more flags than almost anybody in college football.
[30:38] Speaker 2: Even us. Even us.
[30:40] Speaker 3: We are actually ranked ahead of them. We are 119th
[30:44] Speaker 3: in penalty yards. They're 122nd.
[30:46] Speaker 2: So let's push them. Yes, push their buttons.
[30:50] Speaker 3: They're 127th in penalties in college football. I'll tell you
[30:54] Speaker 3: what else Nebraska doesn't do very well. They piss away
[30:57] Speaker 3: fourth quarter leads like nobody's business. Have you guys seen
[31:00] Speaker 3: this stat, by the way? Since 2018, no team in
[31:05] Speaker 3: college football has blown more fourth quarter leads than Nebraska.
[31:08] Speaker 2: Nobody.
[31:09] Speaker 3: They've done it 18 times. Now you say, well, how
[31:11] Speaker 3: much of that was with Matt Rule? Okay, Rule's done
[31:13] Speaker 3: it eight times since he's been there.
[31:16] Speaker 2: Since 2023.
[31:16] Speaker 3: Two this year against Indiana and Oregon. They blow more
[31:21] Speaker 3: fourth quarter leads than anybody in college football. And that's
[31:24] Speaker 3: got to get in your head. Like if this is
[31:26] Speaker 3: a close game, Greg, late in the fourth quarter. You're
[31:29] Speaker 3: telling me that those guys aren't thinking about that? Yeah,
[31:32] Speaker 3: I mean, losing can be habitual as well. You get
[31:36] Speaker 3: into situations where we always do something wrong at this stage,
[31:40] Speaker 3: and then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where you're expecting
[31:43] Speaker 3: something bad to happen, and then it does. Their defense
[31:47] Speaker 3: had held Oregon to six points, Softie, six points going
[31:50] Speaker 3: into the fourth quarter.
[31:51] Speaker 6: Yes, and then they went to the former Cornhusker, Rayola.
[31:54] Speaker 6: And then Rayola comes in and makes some plays. But
[31:56] Speaker 6: having said that, You give up, what, how many points
[31:59] Speaker 6: do you give up?
[31:59] Speaker 3: 17?
[32:00] Speaker 6: You should still win a football game in today's day
[32:02] Speaker 6: and age of college football when you only give.
[32:04] Speaker 2: Up 17 points.
[32:05] Speaker 3: Yeah, you should win a game in the NFL like
[32:07] Speaker 3: the Thursday night game against Denver when your team plays
[32:09] Speaker 3: like that. Go Broncos.
[32:10] Speaker 5: Right?
[32:10] Speaker 2: Come on, man.
[32:11] Speaker 3: Well, they got a kid named Calandria, Anthony Calandria. I
[32:14] Speaker 3: don't know if you guys have seen this guy play.
[32:16] Speaker 3: He's got almost 2,000 total yards already. He's got 18 touchdowns.
[32:20] Speaker 3: He runs, he throws, he catches, he does the whole thing.
[32:22] Speaker 3: And they haven't really changed at all. The old school,
[32:26] Speaker 3: they've got three backs. They've got a fullback, whatever. Joe McEvicka,
[32:30] Speaker 3: remember back in the day? They've got three guys that
[32:34] Speaker 3: can all go for 300 yards or more so far
[32:37] Speaker 3: on the season. So they're going to spread it out.
[32:39] Speaker 3: But I just wonder what we think this thing's going
[32:41] Speaker 3: to look like. Like I mentioned, there's winnable games. And
[32:43] Speaker 3: you held up two fingers. And I know exactly what
[32:46] Speaker 3: you're talking about. Michigan State and Penn State, right? Nebraska,
[32:49] Speaker 3: they'll be an underdog. Indiana, they'll be an underdog, and Oregon,
[32:54] Speaker 3: they'll be an underdog.
[32:55] Speaker 6: I say that they'll be an underdog, and there's two
[32:58] Speaker 6: games where we, on paper, should be... I don't know
[33:01] Speaker 6: if we'll be favored, but we should be right there.
[33:03] Speaker 5: I think only one.
[33:05] Speaker 2: Well, I think Penn State and Michigan State.
[33:08] Speaker 3: Penn State's not very good. Penn State's not very good
[33:11] Speaker 3: at all. But I do think there's a chance we
[33:14] Speaker 3: could win down in Nebraska. It's not likely.
[33:18] Speaker 6: It's not, you know, I think any kind of, you know,
[33:21] Speaker 6: easy game for us or anything like that.
[33:22] Speaker 2: But I think there's a shot because of what you
[33:24] Speaker 2: just talked about.
[33:25] Speaker 6: And I still think Nebraska has some struggles offensively, and
[33:28] Speaker 6: we're going to be in the football game.
[33:30] Speaker 2: So if you're in the game, that's all you need, right?
[33:32] Speaker 2: You just got to make a play or two.
[33:33] Speaker 6: So that's a game that you could win when you're
[33:37] Speaker 6: looking at the schedule. The Indiana game is going to
[33:40] Speaker 6: be tough. I mean, their defense, I saw them play
[33:42] Speaker 6: Ohio State. And I'll tell you what, I think Indiana's
[33:46] Speaker 6: backup quarterback is better than their starting quarterback. They actually
[33:50] Speaker 6: got better offensively when their starting quarterback got hurt.
[33:53] Speaker 4: Ohio State's in trouble, by the way. I think Ohio
[33:55] Speaker 4: State's backup quarterback is.
[33:57] Speaker 6: No, he's terrible. Did you not see what happened? They
[33:59] Speaker 6: could not complete a pass when he came in the game.
[34:02] Speaker 6: He was absolutely horrible.
[34:03] Speaker 4: I think their starting quarterback underthrows Jeremiah Smith every time.
[34:07] Speaker 6: That's great, but their backup quarterback could not complete a
[34:09] Speaker 6: screen pass. He underthrew a running back screen pass. It
[34:13] Speaker 6: went to his feet. So I'm not worried about those guys.
[34:16] Speaker 6: But anyway, my point was this. I think the two
[34:19] Speaker 6: teams that we played down the stretch at the end,
[34:21] Speaker 6: even Oregon and Indiana, their offenses aren't as explosive as
[34:25] Speaker 6: some of the other best teams in the country.
[34:26] Speaker 3: So with that, you always got a shot. Likely, no. Again,
[34:31] Speaker 3: the continued question, what is Elijah Brown?
[34:33] Speaker 2: What is he?
[34:34] Speaker 1: Right?
[34:34] Speaker 3: We keep growing, getting better. Can he do this against
[34:37] Speaker 3: better teams? Can they run the ball against better teams?
[34:40] Speaker 3: I would doubt that. Not with one running back left.
[34:43] Speaker 4: You can run the ball if you get up a lead,
[34:46] Speaker 4: start ahead.
[34:47] Speaker 2: She had fish.
[34:48] Speaker 3: She had Elijah Brown throw the ball 32 times in
[34:50] Speaker 3: the second half against Iowa. Maybe he just says to
[34:53] Speaker 3: hell with it and comes out and starts bombs away in.
[34:55] Speaker 2: The final five games of the year.
[34:56] Speaker 5: Only 27 last week.
[34:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, because you ran the ball. But can you run
[34:59] Speaker 2: the ball against Nebraska? Get the lead. They played Purdue.
[35:03] Speaker 2: This ain't Nebraska. This is Purdue. And they're freaking awful.
[35:07] Speaker 5: Come out on top on Nebraska.
[35:08] Speaker 2: It's going to be a different type of scenario this week.
[35:10] Speaker 1: No doubt.
[35:11] Speaker 5: I think we have a different team now.
[35:13] Speaker 3: Did you see a receiver that you loved outside of Roebuck?
[35:15] Speaker 3: I mean, you're a Lawson guy. You still have a
[35:17] Speaker 3: Lawson wagon. I've been telling you the entire season. Get
[35:20] Speaker 3: the man the ball. Look at the last few weeks.
[35:21] Speaker 4: I think he's got close to 200 yards and like 17,
[35:25] Speaker 4: 18 catches.
[35:26] Speaker 1: Right.
[35:27] Speaker 2: Okay.
[35:27] Speaker 3: Well, why don't you take next week off because there's
[35:29] Speaker 3: a bye. Unless you really miss me that bad and
[35:31] Speaker 3: you want to swing on it.
[35:32] Speaker 2: Do we still get paid?
[35:33] Speaker 3: Nope.
[35:36] Speaker 5: Give me my money, man. Give me my money.
[35:39] Speaker 2: Pay me my money, man.
[35:40] Speaker 3: Pay me my money.
[35:41] Speaker 2: Where's my money, man? All right, good stuff. And we'll
[35:43] Speaker 2: talk to you guys in, I guess, what, 11 days?
[35:46] Speaker 2: We'll be in Lincoln. You guys will be back here
[35:48] Speaker 2: doing God knows what. But I'll be out there in Lincoln.
[35:50] Speaker 2: You'll be here. So I'll see you. I won't see
[35:52] Speaker 2: you guys for like two and a half weeks. That
[35:55] Speaker 2: is sad, man. Just sad. Yeah, we're real broken up
[35:58] Speaker 2: about that. John Wilner will join next on 93.3 KJR FM.
[36:01] Speaker 3: Go Dawgs.
