[2:17] Speaker 1: All right, boys and girls.
[2:23] Speaker 3: Here we go on a busy Tuesday afternoon right here
[2:26] Speaker 3: on 93.3 KJRFM. I cannot tell you how excited I am. Thrilled,
[2:30] Speaker 3: overjoyed to be talking Husky football with my two buddies,
[2:34] Speaker 3: Greg Lewis and Mario Bailey with us on the radio program. Guys,
[2:39] Speaker 3: we have a clip to describe what happened Saturday against Minnesota.
[2:42] Speaker 2: Yeah. There it is right there. Ten and a half
[2:46] Speaker 2: point favorites.
[2:47] Speaker 3: I don't know this time a week ago if I
[2:49] Speaker 3: would have told you, Greg Lewis and Mario Bailey, that
[2:52] Speaker 3: Washington would lose to P.J. Fleck and Drake Lindsey and
[2:56] Speaker 3: for the most part get pretty beat up in the process,
[2:59] Speaker 3: by the way. I think all of us would have
[3:01] Speaker 3: been a little bit surprised by that. 3-1 is not
[3:04] Speaker 3: where we thought this football team was going to be,
[3:06] Speaker 3: yet here we are, baby.
[3:07] Speaker 2: 3-1.
[3:09] Speaker 3: So let's go around the room and just get a
[3:10] Speaker 3: kind of a little bit of a check-in. Mario, we'll
[3:14] Speaker 3: start with you.
[3:14] Speaker 2: You're the youngest. You're the prettiest. Oh, man.
[3:17] Speaker 3: On where this Husky football team is at after four games, man.
[3:19] Speaker 5: There's no prettiness in me, thank you very much. My
[3:22] Speaker 5: mom said I'm not pretty, so I'm not pretty. But
[3:25] Speaker 5: I will say, we wouldn't have been totally shocked. I
[3:28] Speaker 5: think the first three games, the sample size, we kind
[3:31] Speaker 5: of thought that it's a possibility. We knew we weren't
[3:34] Speaker 5: 10-point favorites. You look at the offense, you know, we
[3:37] Speaker 5: can't keep coming out in the first quarter and not
[3:40] Speaker 5: doing anything. I think they jumped on us, but we
[3:43] Speaker 5: can't get it started offensively.
[3:45] Speaker 2: Our line just looked horrible.
[3:47] Speaker 5: We didn't have 25 rushing yards between our two running backs.
[3:52] Speaker 2: We got sacked seven times. Our offensive line is killing us.
[3:56] Speaker 5: But also, I think we don't have any physicality and
[3:59] Speaker 5: we don't have any creativity on Coach Fish's part. Like
[4:02] Speaker 5: on our third downs, Me and Greg watched a few routes.
[4:06] Speaker 5: These guys are just running fade routes. A fade route
[4:08] Speaker 5: is not what you're trying to run on third down.
[4:11] Speaker 5: You can't run play action when you can't run the ball. Offensively,
[4:15] Speaker 5: we can't throw the ball downfield, so we struggled totally offensively. Defensively,
[4:20] Speaker 5: if you look at it, that's the first time a
[4:22] Speaker 5: team got after us offensively. They kept going to the
[4:25] Speaker 5: bubble screen and they had the three receivers lined up
[4:28] Speaker 5: and they just do different variations of that. And it's
[4:31] Speaker 5: the first time I saw our two freshmen. They look
[4:33] Speaker 5: like freshmen. They were getting dominated on the line. They
[4:36] Speaker 5: couldn't do anything. Their line did a great job against
[4:40] Speaker 5: our defense. We got absolutely zero pressure. And they went
[4:44] Speaker 5: after us. That quarterback sat back there. He might have
[4:46] Speaker 5: been 14-14 or 13-13 to start the game. He just
[4:50] Speaker 5: picked us apart. If it wasn't for his one mistake
[4:53] Speaker 5: that he threw the interception, they kind of dominated his
[4:56] Speaker 5: offense and defensively for the game.
[4:59] Speaker 2: Well, the show's over. Mario, just book everything down.
[5:01] Speaker 3: See you later. Ball 30 pregame show Saturday from USC.
[5:06] Speaker 2: Back to your original question.
[5:07] Speaker 6: Before the game, I think that this was a possibility.
[5:11] Speaker 6: I think having said all the things Mario said, coming
[5:14] Speaker 6: into this game, was it high on what our offense
[5:18] Speaker 6: had been producing the first three weeks? So I think
[5:20] Speaker 6: all of us were skeptical on what we would be
[5:22] Speaker 6: able to do once we got into Big Ten play.
[5:24] Speaker 6: We said many times, if you can't run the ball
[5:26] Speaker 6: in the Big Ten, you're in trouble. What I didn't
[5:28] Speaker 6: think was we would be in trouble against Minnesota. I
[5:32] Speaker 6: wasn't really believing that Minnesota would come into Husky Stadium
[5:37] Speaker 6: with a blackout and hopefully a packed house, which it
[5:40] Speaker 6: didn't turn out necessarily to be, but with a motivated
[5:43] Speaker 6: Washington team who, for all intents and purposes, is getting
[5:48] Speaker 6: a little.
[5:48] Speaker 2: More confidence after the first couple weeks, a little healthier.
[5:51] Speaker 6: I didn't think Minnesota would come in and win, and
[5:55] Speaker 6: let alone really out-physical us, dominate the football game, as
[5:59] Speaker 6: Mario eloquently said, with Just one mistake being made by
[6:03] Speaker 6: their quarterback gave us some hope at the end, although
[6:05] Speaker 6: they snuffed that out pretty quickly. I thought the Huskies
[6:09] Speaker 6: would be able to find a way. To get by Minnesota.
[6:12] Speaker 1: Right.
[6:13] Speaker 6: You know, from what I've seen from them earlier in
[6:16] Speaker 6: the year and the first couple of games. But I'll
[6:19] Speaker 6: say this. Having said all of that, I continue to
[6:23] Speaker 6: believe if we can't run the football and we're going
[6:26] Speaker 6: to try to be a drop back passing type of team.
[6:29] Speaker 1: Right.
[6:29] Speaker 6: With our quarterback who has a lot of shortcomings, pun intended.
[6:33] Speaker 6: that we are going to be in trouble the rest
[6:36] Speaker 6: of the season. This is not an offensive team right
[6:41] Speaker 6: now that can win the way they're trying to win
[6:43] Speaker 6: football games.
[6:44] Speaker 2: I don't care who you line up against us.
[6:46] Speaker 6: So we're going to have to do something drastically different
[6:49] Speaker 6: if we're expecting this team to get better.
[6:51] Speaker 3: Okay, well, what is that? Because their running game is atrocious.
[6:55] Speaker 3: I mean, there's no question about that. They had five
[6:58] Speaker 3: yards rushing from their running backs in the second half,
[7:00] Speaker 3: as in one, two, three, four, five.
[7:01] Speaker 2: That's it. Right. Brian Bonner, Trey Cooley.
[7:04] Speaker 3: You mentioned, I think, on Saturday's postgame that you're done
[7:07] Speaker 3: with Trey Cooley.
[7:08] Speaker 1: Right.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Trey Cooley. Forget about it. You know, go. I've seen
[7:11] Speaker 2: enough from Trey Cooley. You've seen enough.
[7:12] Speaker 3: So it's Brian Bonner. It's Ansu Sano. It's Daman Williams. So,
[7:17] Speaker 3: you know, like Rick Neuheisel has been on this show
[7:19] Speaker 3: and he is, I think, sarcastically, although I'm not certain.
[7:22] Speaker 3: We'll find out Thursday.
[7:23] Speaker 2: You should.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Recommended option football. How do you do that when you
[7:27] Speaker 3: haven't practiced at all year long?
[7:29] Speaker 6: So I would not agree with the fact that they
[7:32] Speaker 6: should run option football in the traditional sense of option
[7:35] Speaker 6: that he coached with Marcus Tiasisopo.
[7:37] Speaker 2: What I would say is.
[7:39] Speaker 6: We, and even more so than what Mario recommended two
[7:43] Speaker 6: games ago, you got to just turn DeMond loose and make.
[7:47] Speaker 2: Him a different type of quarterback. Yeah.
[7:49] Speaker 6: He's got to be a Kyler Murray running around, getting
[7:52] Speaker 6: outside of the pocket, read zones, design quarterback draws. We've
[7:58] Speaker 6: got to go ahead and use him until he's used up.
[8:02] Speaker 2: And, yes, that's going to put him at risk. He
[8:05] Speaker 2: might get injured. He might get hurt.
[8:06] Speaker 6: But that is the only way we are going to
[8:08] Speaker 6: have an opportunity to win, regardless of— his inability to
[8:13] Speaker 6: lead this team from the pocket, he is still going
[8:16] Speaker 6: to be probably the best athlete on the field every
[8:19] Speaker 6: time we line up or close to it. And so
[8:21] Speaker 6: we got to get all of that athleticism, all the speed,
[8:25] Speaker 6: everything we can out of him in order to be
[8:28] Speaker 6: effective offensively. Mario said, you can't run play action if
[8:31] Speaker 6: you can't run the ball, right? No one's going for
[8:33] Speaker 6: our play action. He can't drop back in the pocket
[8:36] Speaker 6: and throw over six foot five offensive line. He's never
[8:40] Speaker 6: been good at that. Mario's been talking about for three years.
[8:42] Speaker 6: He's not a deep passer of the quarterback. And that's
[8:44] Speaker 6: because he can't see over the line. And frankly, getting
[8:47] Speaker 6: to his third read, if need be, is nearly impossible
[8:50] Speaker 6: right now because he's running out of the pocket.
[8:53] Speaker 2: Why is he here? Why is he here again? Why
[8:55] Speaker 2: is he making four million? I mean, I'm not trying
[8:58] Speaker 2: to be a smart ass, but why is he here?
[8:59] Speaker 6: Again, that is the coaches who decided that. And if
[9:04] Speaker 6: you take him like last year and you put him
[9:06] Speaker 6: in a situation where he's got a really good offensive line,
[9:08] Speaker 6: he's got a really good run game, he's got big, tall,
[9:11] Speaker 6: wide receivers, he can be effective. But when you strip
[9:15] Speaker 6: away all that and it's just on him. He's not
[9:19] Speaker 6: going to win as a deep throwing quarterback. The only
[9:22] Speaker 6: way he's going to win when you strip away all
[9:24] Speaker 6: of that is a guy running around making plays, making
[9:27] Speaker 6: guys miss, you know, having a super athletic play, making
[9:31] Speaker 6: something out of nothing.
[9:33] Speaker 2: And, you know, you're going to have to put him
[9:35] Speaker 2: in peril at that point. Yeah.
[9:36] Speaker 5: Right.
[9:37] Speaker 2: And you know what?
[9:38] Speaker 6: If he gets hurt in week six, but we won
[9:40] Speaker 6: three games because of it, you got out of him
[9:42] Speaker 6: what you could get out of him. But I can
[9:43] Speaker 6: tell you right now, we are not going to win
[9:46] Speaker 6: football games again. with this team that cannot run the
[9:49] Speaker 6: ball by dropping DeMond Williams back in the pocket trying
[9:54] Speaker 6: to throw down the field.
[9:55] Speaker 2: Not going to win games that way.
[9:56] Speaker 5: Yeah, I think Coach is kind of joking, but we
[10:00] Speaker 5: should have an option package in. What Greg said is
[10:04] Speaker 5: absolutely right. We have to figure, because you're asking, why
[10:07] Speaker 5: is he here? We gave this young man $ 4 million,
[10:09] Speaker 5: and people keep saying, let's wait, let's wait. We can't
[10:13] Speaker 5: put him in harm's way. Yes, we can. We can
[10:15] Speaker 5: put him in harm's way right now. We need to
[10:17] Speaker 5: figure out how to get him to ball more, whether
[10:19] Speaker 5: that's the option, whether that's rolling out. What it is,
[10:23] Speaker 5: he has to do something. We can't win with drop-back
[10:26] Speaker 5: passing and not using our running backs. This past game,
[10:31] Speaker 5: they blitzed him. They were coming after him. They were
[10:33] Speaker 5: bringing backers. They were bringing safeties. They did everything. The
[10:37] Speaker 5: worst part is they got three sacks in the fourth quarter.
[10:40] Speaker 5: I don't think he could read it. He didn't know
[10:42] Speaker 5: where it was coming from. And we weren't calling the
[10:45] Speaker 5: correct plays to put him in position to make plays.
[10:48] Speaker 2: They were coming straight after us.
[10:50] Speaker 5: And what Greg said, too, like, I didn't expect that
[10:52] Speaker 5: to be Minnesota, but they had our number. And Coach
[10:55] Speaker 5: Fish is not calling the plays and putting DeMond in
[10:57] Speaker 5: position to to make plays that he should be making.
[11:00] Speaker 3: Yeah, I just, I mean, look, this is, the running
[11:03] Speaker 3: game is going to be a problem all year, right?
[11:05] Speaker 3: There is no running game. But you have to try. Like,
[11:08] Speaker 3: you got to give them the ball. Like I said before, like,
[11:10] Speaker 3: let's try and give them the ball. You don't call
[11:13] Speaker 3: them play action. You're not giving them the ball.
[11:15] Speaker 2: To call play action.
[11:16] Speaker 3: When you say give that, are you talking about Bonner?
[11:18] Speaker 6: Bonner.
[11:19] Speaker 5: Okay, so you want to see. I want to see
[11:21] Speaker 5: them at least try and run the ball. We're not
[11:24] Speaker 5: even giving it an effort. Look at how many rushes
[11:26] Speaker 5: we had. like try and run the ball. I mean,
[11:28] Speaker 5: I understand this game, we got behind 14 to nothing,
[11:31] Speaker 5: but you have to try and run the ball. You
[11:33] Speaker 5: have to have some type of intimidation factor, like at
[11:36] Speaker 5: least they're going to try.
[11:37] Speaker 3: They ran the ball 11 times with their backs. 11 times.
[11:41] Speaker 3: In a game that was, you know, it wasn't a blowout,
[11:44] Speaker 3: but it was winnable, fairly close within striking distance.
[11:47] Speaker 2: You're telling me.
[11:48] Speaker 3: That as bad as these guys have looked when they
[11:50] Speaker 3: touch the ball, you want to see them touch the
[11:52] Speaker 3: ball more? At least 20 times.
[11:54] Speaker 2: At least 20 times. Yeah. You know, it's tough.
[11:58] Speaker 6: And the reason I say it's tough is, you know,
[12:00] Speaker 6: I'm an old running back. And I know it takes
[12:03] Speaker 6: time for a running back sometimes to get in the groove,
[12:06] Speaker 6: you know, to, you know, physically punish the defense a
[12:10] Speaker 6: little bit so he can't make a guy miss. He
[12:12] Speaker 6: can't break a tackle and all those kinds of things.
[12:15] Speaker 6: One of the struggles I have, though, is I haven't
[12:18] Speaker 6: seen any dynamic plays, any quick twitch plays. real fast move,
[12:25] Speaker 6: anything explosive out of our running backs in the opportunities
[12:29] Speaker 6: that they have.
[12:30] Speaker 2: And granted, they haven't had that many.
[12:32] Speaker 6: So I get what Mario's saying, and I'm not going
[12:34] Speaker 6: to argue that point because it might, but I do
[12:37] Speaker 6: believe it's going to be fruitless. I believe that if
[12:40] Speaker 6: we do give them the ball 20 times, we'll end
[12:43] Speaker 6: up with 45 yards of rushing on 20 carries. And
[12:48] Speaker 6: it's not all on them. You know, I don't think
[12:50] Speaker 6: this offensive line is physical in their capacity.
[12:53] Speaker 2: In their technique.
[12:55] Speaker 6: I know individuals can be physical, but the way we're running,
[12:58] Speaker 6: we're not running a physical brand and technique of blocking
[13:01] Speaker 6: and football. And typically these guys can get what's there,
[13:05] Speaker 6: what's given to them. I don't see them making a
[13:07] Speaker 6: lot of guys miss. I don't see them, you know, um,
[13:10] Speaker 6: really running guys over, being powerful, or anything like that.
[13:14] Speaker 6: So I think tomorrow's, yeah, maybe 15 to 17 carries
[13:19] Speaker 6: and tune it up a little bit, but I just
[13:21] Speaker 6: don't think we're going to have a ton of success
[13:22] Speaker 6: running the football.
[13:23] Speaker 3: I mean, it feels like we're kind of desperate right now, right,
[13:26] Speaker 3: that we're just grasping at straws. You know, is there
[13:29] Speaker 3: possibly something that could work here? If you even ran
[13:33] Speaker 3: the ball remotely a bit more, would that potentially get
[13:36] Speaker 3: teams to– Respect it. I mean, the fourth quarter of
[13:39] Speaker 3: that game, guys, and you saw the same thing I did.
[13:42] Speaker 3: I'm down there on the sideline, and Minnesota couldn't give
[13:45] Speaker 3: a damn about the Husky run game. They are just
[13:48] Speaker 3: teeing off on DeMond Williams. I'm surprised the guy could
[13:51] Speaker 3: get up and walk after that game, to be totally
[13:53] Speaker 3: honest with you. And you know that is where that
[13:55] Speaker 3: would go. I mean, both of you have basically admitted it,
[13:58] Speaker 3: that you're willing to run DeMond more, and if it
[14:02] Speaker 3: ends up in DeMond getting banged up, then so be it.
[14:05] Speaker 1: Right.
[14:05] Speaker 3: And maybe that is a commentary about college football in
[14:08] Speaker 3: 2026 when a guy's making four million. You would never
[14:11] Speaker 3: have said that 30 years ago about a kid.
[14:14] Speaker 2: And a student athlete. Let's put him in harm's way.
[14:17] Speaker 3: But we're talking about Devon Williams like we talk about
[14:19] Speaker 3: pro quarterbacks now.
[14:20] Speaker 2: Absolutely.
[14:20] Speaker 6: Well, DeMond Williams will make more money in college than
[14:23] Speaker 6: the majority of these guys who go pro.
[14:25] Speaker 2: He's making more than Drew Locke's making right now.
[14:27] Speaker 4: Exactly.
[14:28] Speaker 2: OK, right now.
[14:28] Speaker 6: So so that's my point. He's a professional athlete. And
[14:32] Speaker 6: being a professional athlete, you have to treat him as such.
[14:35] Speaker 6: He's going to go out there and you're paying him
[14:37] Speaker 6: four million. He's got to go out there and put
[14:40] Speaker 6: himself on the line, as we all do and all did.
[14:43] Speaker 6: But some of us put ourselves on the line.
[14:45] Speaker 2: For zero money. For nothing.
[14:47] Speaker 6: I left my knee out there on the 27-yard line somewhere,
[14:51] Speaker 6: and I didn't get paid a dime for that. And
[14:53] Speaker 6: so injuries are part of the game, and now that
[14:55] Speaker 6: you're getting paid for it, then you become someone who
[14:59] Speaker 6: has to go out there and lay it on the line.
[15:00] Speaker 6: But I just think– I'm saying this more from the perspective, Softie.
[15:04] Speaker 6: There is no other dynamic way we are going to
[15:08] Speaker 6: turn our offense into something with how we're playing right
[15:12] Speaker 6: now because we don't have the pieces at running back.
[15:15] Speaker 6: We have some really good wide receivers, no doubt. I
[15:18] Speaker 6: believe that those guys are talented. But we don't have
[15:21] Speaker 6: a Jeremiah Smith type of guy or the guy down
[15:24] Speaker 6: in Miami or.
[15:25] Speaker 2: Something like that.
[15:26] Speaker 6: And we don't have the quarterback who can drop back
[15:30] Speaker 6: in the pocket. stand there with guys barreling down on
[15:34] Speaker 6: him and complete the pass down the field to those guys.
[15:37] Speaker 6: Even if they do get open consistently, you don't have
[15:41] Speaker 6: the guy who can do that. So I think having
[15:43] Speaker 6: said that, it always goes down to playing with the
[15:46] Speaker 6: hand you're dealt. You know, you got to use the
[15:48] Speaker 6: pieces that you have to the best of their talent
[15:50] Speaker 6: and skill set.
[15:51] Speaker 2: I think.
[15:52] Speaker 6: Demands talent and skill set and ability lend more towards
[15:55] Speaker 6: the quarterback yeah rpos how about that how about read
[15:59] Speaker 6: zones how about quarterback draws how about getting them outside
[16:03] Speaker 6: of the pocket and design rollouts not counting on them
[16:06] Speaker 6: to go for the off tackle fake and roll out
[16:09] Speaker 6: because they're not going for that yeah but you design
[16:11] Speaker 6: your protections so that he can roll out to the
[16:14] Speaker 6: right or to the left and protect him that way
[16:17] Speaker 6: and get him throwing the ball outside of the pocket.
[16:19] Speaker 2: Well, Mario, here's the problem.
[16:20] Speaker 3: So the problem is that if you do this and
[16:23] Speaker 3: you start to change your offense, you're going to have
[16:25] Speaker 3: to get comfortable with it as soon as possible. And
[16:28] Speaker 3: that means practicing it this week. That means this Saturday
[16:31] Speaker 3: against USC. The longer you wait, the more it's going
[16:33] Speaker 3: to be difficult to pull it off. Maybe this is
[16:36] Speaker 3: the week against USC. I was looking at some numbers.
[16:38] Speaker 3: They're 54th in the country in rush D, 100th in
[16:41] Speaker 3: scoring D, 94th in third down D. They have three
[16:44] Speaker 3: picks in four games, and they've only got, what, nine
[16:46] Speaker 3: sacks in the first four games.
[16:48] Speaker 2: Of the year.
[16:48] Speaker 3: Maybe this is the week that the offense gets going again.
[16:53] Speaker 3: The question is, can they survive against Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana, Oregon,
[16:58] Speaker 3: the rest of the way?
[16:59] Speaker 2: You know Jed, do you think he would do.
[17:01] Speaker 3: What Greg's talking about doing, what you're talking about doing?
[17:04] Speaker 3: This is a guy who has been adamant. We're not
[17:06] Speaker 3: going to put our quarterback in harm's way. We asked
[17:09] Speaker 3: him two weeks ago, are you ready to start calling
[17:11] Speaker 3: more design runs for DeMond?
[17:13] Speaker 2: No, we're not doing that. You think he does that?
[17:17] Speaker 2: You think DeMond Williams.
[17:18] Speaker 3: goes to DeMond Williams' mom and says, we're going to
[17:21] Speaker 3: run your quarterback into the ground, and we don't care
[17:25] Speaker 3: if he gets hurt.
[17:26] Speaker 2: No, coach is not going to do that.
[17:27] Speaker 5: I'm sure there was some promises made and he has
[17:30] Speaker 5: love for the young man, but you got to have
[17:32] Speaker 5: love for the program. And DeMond Williams is our best
[17:36] Speaker 5: offensive weapon. So you have to come up with a
[17:38] Speaker 5: different game plan than what you've had, whether that's rollout passes,
[17:42] Speaker 5: like I said, an option package, more design runs.
[17:46] Speaker 2: The young man has to touch the ball more effectively.
[17:49] Speaker 5: In any capacity because he is the one that stirs
[17:52] Speaker 5: the drink. He is the man. Like, we pay this
[17:55] Speaker 5: man $ 4 million. There is nothing else to wait for.
[17:58] Speaker 5: Our playoff hopes went down with Minnesota last week. We're
[18:02] Speaker 5: trying to fight for everything we have. Why wouldn't you
[18:05] Speaker 5: figure out ways to get this dynamic young man the ball?
[18:09] Speaker 5: He is not a drop back passer. So Coach Fish
[18:11] Speaker 5: loves to drop back pass. He likes the cute style.
[18:15] Speaker 5: We don't have that. We don't have the weapons for that.
[18:17] Speaker 5: DeMond Williams is the type of player that he needs
[18:19] Speaker 5: the weapons besides him. Like he can go to LSU.
[18:23] Speaker 5: You got all these receivers. You got this tight end.
[18:25] Speaker 5: You got these running backs. That's a system he can
[18:27] Speaker 5: fit in. But right now we need him to play
[18:29] Speaker 5: Michael Vick style like there's nobody else around him and
[18:33] Speaker 5: he has to make the plays.
[18:34] Speaker 3: Well, I think what you said, Greg, and I love that,
[18:36] Speaker 3: by the way, Mario, you said, Greg, that even if
[18:38] Speaker 3: they would do all this that and run the ball more,
[18:42] Speaker 3: it's not going to bear fruit.
[18:43] Speaker 1: Right.
[18:43] Speaker 3: We just kind of know where this is going. Even
[18:46] Speaker 3: with Quade Card and Jay Lamar, if those guys had
[18:48] Speaker 3: been healthy, it may not have made that big of
[18:50] Speaker 3: a difference. Are you guys sitting here in front of
[18:53] Speaker 3: me now, honestly, thinking that these guys are just cooked?
[18:58] Speaker 2: They're cooked. When you say cooked, you mean? They don't
[19:00] Speaker 2: have the personnel to do this.
[19:02] Speaker 3: To be in the playoff conversation in November like we
[19:05] Speaker 3: thought they would be a year ago if they'd beaten Wisconsin. Yeah.
[19:08] Speaker 2: Like, forget it. Yeah.
[19:09] Speaker 6: I think at the beginning of the year, you know,
[19:11] Speaker 6: we had a conversation, maybe the first Tuesday we talked about,
[19:15] Speaker 6: and I made a statement. I said, in order for
[19:17] Speaker 6: these guys to make the playoffs, they're going to have
[19:20] Speaker 6: to go into the last two games of the season 9-1.
[19:23] Speaker 2: At the playoffs. Bare minimum.
[19:26] Speaker 6: And win one of those games against Oregon. And I
[19:28] Speaker 6: didn't see that. And obviously, I don't think they're a
[19:31] Speaker 6: playoff quality team. Did I think that we might be
[19:34] Speaker 6: sitting here talking about how do we manifest a 30-point
[19:38] Speaker 6: game at least once the rest of the year?
[19:40] Speaker 2: No.
[19:40] Speaker 6: But I didn't think we had what it was going
[19:42] Speaker 6: to take in order to navigate that tough, tough Big
[19:46] Speaker 6: Ten schedule. We played two of the best teams in
[19:48] Speaker 6: the country right down the stretch. Now you got to
[19:50] Speaker 6: navigate all of those games in between that you can't
[19:53] Speaker 6: have a bad day in order to you can maybe
[19:55] Speaker 6: have one bad day. And we've already had one. Minnesota
[19:58] Speaker 6: was certainly one of the wins I was counting.
[20:00] Speaker 2: Right.
[20:00] Speaker 6: So now you've got to beat USC on the road.
[20:03] Speaker 6: You've got to go down and win in Michigan State.
[20:05] Speaker 6: You've got to go win in Nebraska. You've got to
[20:07] Speaker 6: beat Penn State coming in here. You've got to beat
[20:09] Speaker 6: a really good Iowa team right now that's going to
[20:11] Speaker 6: come here in two weeks. So do you end up
[20:14] Speaker 6: with Minnesota causing you to have three losses in a row?
[20:17] Speaker 2: Right.
[20:18] Speaker 6: I mean, that to me, we should stop, and nor
[20:21] Speaker 6: was I ever really prepared to talk about this team
[20:24] Speaker 6: being a playoff team. I thought 9-3 was the ceiling.
[20:27] Speaker 6: 8-4 was probably most likely. outside chance if we stub
[20:32] Speaker 6: our toes to go seven and five now it's like
[20:34] Speaker 6: man seven and five eight and four might be the
[20:36] Speaker 6: ceiling six and six is a possibility yeah no we're
[20:39] Speaker 6: cooked but i thought i thought we were like a
[20:41] Speaker 6: ten and two team uh nine and three would be
[20:44] Speaker 6: a bad season but um we're cooked right now i
[20:47] Speaker 6: don't see any capacity that we we make the playoffs
[20:51] Speaker 6: like i'm hoping that we're bowl eligible but Like, we're
[20:54] Speaker 6: in an uphill battle.
[20:55] Speaker 2: We don't have any weapons.
[20:56] Speaker 5: Like, if you're running the ball, and you said, well,
[20:58] Speaker 5: we had five rushing yards in the second half.
[21:01] Speaker 2: That's right, from your backs. Yeah, that's absolutely ridiculous.
[21:04] Speaker 5: It's ridiculous that we gave up seven sacks, and we
[21:07] Speaker 5: gave a quarterback with that capacity at Minnesota. He looked
[21:11] Speaker 5: like he was Tom Brady out there.
[21:12] Speaker 2: He gave up seven sacks to Minnesota.
[21:14] Speaker 5: Yeah, we're absolutely cooked, and I just think we have
[21:18] Speaker 5: to fight for the season now. And like I said,
[21:22] Speaker 5: At the beginning, I didn't even think our defense played
[21:24] Speaker 5: that well. And our defense has been our staple the
[21:26] Speaker 5: past few years. And they didn't play well. Here's a
[21:29] Speaker 5: chance I give them, Softie. There's something called pride.
[21:31] Speaker 6: There's something called, you know, not giving up even though
[21:36] Speaker 6: you're in a bad situation as a team. You have
[21:39] Speaker 6: to find some way, and that's, again, I'm starting with
[21:42] Speaker 6: Coach Fish. You've got to do something different. To do
[21:45] Speaker 6: things the same way, to expect different results is the
[21:47] Speaker 6: definition of insanity. You've heard that many times. We've got
[21:50] Speaker 6: to change what we're doing offensively because that's where the
[21:53] Speaker 6: biggest problem is. We've got to change something, and these
[21:55] Speaker 6: guys have got to have some pride and come out
[21:57] Speaker 6: and play. Well, let's come back and talk about that.
[21:59] Speaker 6: A lot of conversation about the quarterback.
[22:01] Speaker 2: How about the head coach? How about the scheme? How
[22:03] Speaker 2: about the game plan?
[22:03] Speaker 3: How about the clock management Saturday versus Minnesota? All that
[22:06] Speaker 3: and more with the Husky Honks, brought to you by
[22:08] Speaker 3: our friends at Frostbrood Coors Light, UA Local 32, Hyder Construction,
[22:12] Speaker 3: Mitsubishi Electric Heating and Air Conditioning, Delta, and the Clearwater Casino.
[22:16] Speaker 2: More with the Honks next on 93.3 KJRFM.
[22:22] Speaker 1: Now back to the Coors Light Husky Honks on Tuesdays.
[22:25] Speaker 2: Brought to you by Frostbreed Coors Light.
[22:28] Speaker 1: By Mitsubishi Electric Heating and Air Conditioning. By UA Local 32.
[22:32] Speaker 1: By Air Construction. By Clearwater Casino. And by Delta Airlines.
[22:38] Speaker 1: On your home for the Huskies.
[22:40] Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
[22:45] Speaker 3: All right, big thanks to the Clearwater Casino, the FanDuel Sportsbook,
[22:48] Speaker 3: and Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort, Delta Airlines, the official airline
[22:53] Speaker 3: of Sports Radio 93.3 KJRF. We actually have a couple
[22:56] Speaker 3: of winners in the Delta Hangout. Carrie and her boyfriend,
[23:01] Speaker 3: I believe Neil, is that right, is here with us today?
[23:03] Speaker 2: Or is it Jerry?
[23:04] Speaker 3: I'm not sure, I forgot. Congratulations, gang, for coming down.
[23:07] Speaker 3: They got Taco Time. They got Simply Seattle. And they
[23:09] Speaker 3: got a chance to hang out with Mario and Greg.
[23:11] Speaker 3: They actually told me they said the biggest reason why
[23:13] Speaker 3: we're here is to see Mario Bailey.
[23:15] Speaker 2: So big honor for them to hang out with it.
[23:18] Speaker 3: I think Jerry said, or is it Gary, the fifth
[23:21] Speaker 3: best wide receiver in Husky football history.
[23:23] Speaker 6: He's the only wide receiver in Husky history that has
[23:26] Speaker 6: his own T-shirt with his own picture on it.
[23:28] Speaker 5: He's the only receiver in Husky history that still holds
[23:32] Speaker 5: the records 35, 36 years later.
[23:34] Speaker 2: The question is, did you have a baby in college, though?
[23:37] Speaker 2: Only Greg. Okay.
[23:40] Speaker 6: You have to get off this. My daughter is feeling
[23:42] Speaker 6: some kind of way. You guys are trying to make
[23:43] Speaker 6: it like her being born is a bad thing.
[23:46] Speaker 7: No, no, no.
[23:47] Speaker 6: She's the most beautiful blessing I ever had.
[23:50] Speaker 2: Wonderful person. Fantastic lady. Mario, your thoughts on the run game.
[23:54] Speaker 2: Greg had a baby.
[23:55] Speaker 5: And then he tried to get us to.
[23:59] Speaker 2: Mario was doing baby making things. No, I was not.
[24:03] Speaker 2: Let's just make sure we're all on the same page here.
[24:06] Speaker 2: He tried to turn us all to the church.
[24:08] Speaker 3: Okay, this is what happens when you lose to Minnesota.
[24:12] Speaker 3: This is what happens when you're 3-1 and you haven't
[24:15] Speaker 3: played well.
[24:16] Speaker 2: Assessment of the head coach. You go. You want a great?
[24:21] Speaker 2: I just want you to tell me what you think.
[24:23] Speaker 2: Because there's a play.
[24:24] Speaker 3: Caller that you went after in the postgame show on
[24:27] Speaker 3: Saturday night.
[24:28] Speaker 2: And you know the play caller is also the head coach. Okay,
[24:30] Speaker 2: assessment of the coach. I think coach is a recruiter.
[24:33] Speaker 2: I think he does a great job recruiting.
[24:36] Speaker 5: I think as far as the team and play calling
[24:39] Speaker 5: right now, he's at a C- or a D as
[24:41] Speaker 5: far as our offense is concerned. We cannot score in
[24:44] Speaker 5: the first quarter. We scored the 14, I believe, against
[24:47] Speaker 5: Eastern Washington. But other than that, even last year, he
[24:50] Speaker 5: has a problem getting started. And when we come out
[24:53] Speaker 5: in the after half and you have a delay of
[24:55] Speaker 5: the game, That's all on the coach. At the end
[24:58] Speaker 5: of that fourth quarter when they're blitzing and they're coming
[25:01] Speaker 5: and you sack our quarterback three times in the fourth
[25:04] Speaker 5: quarter when we're trying to come back and win, that's
[25:06] Speaker 5: all on the coach. So I think coach has to
[25:10] Speaker 5: go back to the drawing board as far as creativity
[25:13] Speaker 5: and on our offensive coordinator's side and, you know, these
[25:16] Speaker 5: personal fouls. We still had more on the defensive end.
[25:19] Speaker 5: If you're the head coach, all of that lies on you.
[25:22] Speaker 5: So right now I think Coach Fish is at the C-
[25:25] Speaker 5: or D-level.
[25:26] Speaker 6: I think he, as a coach, has a certain style
[25:29] Speaker 6: that he likes to play, the type of football that
[25:31] Speaker 6: he likes to play. And I don't think he even
[25:33] Speaker 6: has half of the type of personnel, especially at the
[25:36] Speaker 6: quarterback spot, that he would like or need to have
[25:39] Speaker 6: in order to play that style of football. And I'm
[25:41] Speaker 6: not going to play, you know, fake or anything like that.
[25:44] Speaker 2: Right. Right. Right.
[26:00] Speaker 6: And then can, you know, get the ball down the
[26:02] Speaker 6: field once you've committed their safeties to coming up, getting
[26:06] Speaker 6: close to the line of scrimmage because you're getting five
[26:08] Speaker 6: and seven yards of carry. So I think, you know,
[26:11] Speaker 6: the two things I'll say is he doesn't have the
[26:12] Speaker 6: personnel to play the style that he wants, and I'm
[26:15] Speaker 6: not a big fan of that style of football personally
[26:18] Speaker 6: because it just doesn't fit my ideology of what type
[26:22] Speaker 6: of football I like seeing in Huskies.
[26:23] Speaker 3: But he might see what you see, that we could
[26:26] Speaker 3: appease people They want to see us run the ball more,
[26:29] Speaker 3: but it's not going anywhere.
[26:30] Speaker 6: I didn't say run the ball more. I said have
[26:32] Speaker 6: a running philosophy, which means you recruit to that. You
[26:35] Speaker 6: recruit big, strong guys up front who are physical and maulers.
[26:39] Speaker 2: You recruit running.
[26:40] Speaker 6: Backs who are not fictitiously the number nine guy in
[26:45] Speaker 6: the country seven injuries ago and bring them into your program.
[26:48] Speaker 6: You go get guys that want to come play for
[26:51] Speaker 6: a big-time running football program. You will have more of
[26:54] Speaker 6: those guys in your program if that's the type of stuff.
[26:57] Speaker 3: Aren't they doing that, though, with Cody Green and John
[26:59] Speaker 3: Mills and Derek Coleman and Bruce Saw? I mean, these
[27:02] Speaker 3: guys are two freshmen and a sophomore.
[27:04] Speaker 2: I'll say this, though. This is something I was going
[27:06] Speaker 2: to say earlier.
[27:07] Speaker 6: I do believe that the young guys on this football
[27:10] Speaker 6: team give the potential for this to be a really
[27:13] Speaker 6: good team down the line. But unfortunately, whether it's the
[27:17] Speaker 6: transfer portal or injuries, the people they have right now,
[27:22] Speaker 6: um outside of damon williams who again no he's not
[27:25] Speaker 6: playing great but i think it's because he's playing the
[27:28] Speaker 6: wrong type of system for his skill set i think
[27:31] Speaker 6: he's talented but not in this system i think this
[27:34] Speaker 6: is a team that right now has a senior and
[27:36] Speaker 6: junior class yeah that are depleted they're not the guys
[27:39] Speaker 6: that are going to be successful helping you win national
[27:42] Speaker 6: championship games but the young guys do have potential to be.
[27:45] Speaker 2: That It's his third year.
[27:46] Speaker 6: It's his responsibility to have built that.
[27:50] Speaker 2: I agree.
[27:50] Speaker 5: And you have to adapt. Injuries happens to every football team,
[27:55] Speaker 5: to every sports. You have to adapt to what your
[27:58] Speaker 5: personnel is. That's why I keep saying on the play calling,
[28:01] Speaker 5: you know what this guy is good at. You know
[28:04] Speaker 5: what that guy is good at. Bonner's averaging five yards
[28:07] Speaker 5: a carry. Now, granted, he had one carry that might
[28:10] Speaker 5: have been 40 or 50 yards. But that's part of
[28:14] Speaker 5: a running back, and that's how you get your average up.
[28:17] Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
[28:18] Speaker 5: If he's averaging five yards a carry, you're supposed to
[28:20] Speaker 5: give the young man the ball a few more times.
[28:23] Speaker 5: Maybe he breaks another one, and you're saying, oh, yeah, well,
[28:25] Speaker 5: he broke another 50-yarder. But if you're breaking a couple
[28:28] Speaker 5: 50-yarders a game, that's part of what your average is.
[28:31] Speaker 3: Well, there's no doubt about that. I mean, that happened, right?
[28:33] Speaker 3: That run happened, and he gets credit for it. But, Greg,
[28:37] Speaker 3: I think you're exactly right. If you take that away,
[28:39] Speaker 3: he's got 71 yards on 21 carries for an average
[28:42] Speaker 3: of 3.3 yards a carry, which is not great in
[28:45] Speaker 3: college football.
[28:46] Speaker 2: Still give him the ball. But that did happen.
[28:48] Speaker 3: So I almost want to give him the ball more
[28:51] Speaker 3: just to see if there's anything there. I'm almost willing
[28:54] Speaker 3: to sacrifice a drive or four. just to see if
[28:58] Speaker 3: it's there. And maybe you start with that this Saturday
[29:00] Speaker 3: versus USC. I mean, USC's got what I say, the
[29:03] Speaker 3: 54th best rushing defense in college football.
[29:05] Speaker 2: They're not terrible.
[29:06] Speaker 3: 120 yards a game is not god-awful, but it's not
[29:10] Speaker 3: good either. Their defense is bad. It's the worst part
[29:13] Speaker 3: of their team by far. Maybe this is the game
[29:15] Speaker 3: where you just say, all right, all you knuckleheads out
[29:17] Speaker 3: there who think I'm not running the ball more, let's
[29:19] Speaker 3: give it to Brian Bonner 15 times in the first half,
[29:22] Speaker 3: and then you tell me your thoughts when we're down 14-3.
[29:25] Speaker 2: At halftime. Well, we said that we can shelve that
[29:28] Speaker 2: and move on. Yeah, maybe.
[29:30] Speaker 6: But I do believe, you know, we said before the
[29:32] Speaker 6: game last week that Minnesota got, you know, the ball
[29:35] Speaker 6: run down their throats.
[29:36] Speaker 2: By Mississippi State. They went for 250. Went for 250. Correct.
[29:39] Speaker 2: And did we ever commit to running downhill?
[29:42] Speaker 4: No.
[29:42] Speaker 6: Again, I don't think, again, I'll go back to saying this.
[29:46] Speaker 6: This coach, that is not his philosophy. And he hasn't
[29:51] Speaker 6: built his team or... They don't coach his team to
[29:55] Speaker 6: run that type of offense. So as much as I
[29:57] Speaker 6: say you got to get DeMond out there running around
[29:59] Speaker 6: making plays and all of that, the crazy part about
[30:02] Speaker 6: that statement and why it wreaks so much of desperation
[30:05] Speaker 6: is now you got to change your whole philosophy. You
[30:07] Speaker 6: haven't practiced that. You haven't prepared to do it that way.
[30:10] Speaker 6: But what I'm saying is you can't keep doing it.
[30:12] Speaker 2: The same way. and keep getting these results and.
[30:16] Speaker 6: Say, well, we just hope that even though the competition
[30:19] Speaker 6: level is going.
[30:19] Speaker 2: Up each week, that we're going to be better.
[30:21] Speaker 3: Well, let's talk about USC, right? Let's get to it.
[30:24] Speaker 3: USC coming off a loss to Oregon. They got massive
[30:26] Speaker 3: problems down there as well with their culture.
[30:28] Speaker 2: Holy cow. Next on 93.3 KJRFM.
[30:33] Speaker 1: Now back to the Coors Light Husky Hogs on Tuesdays.
[30:37] Speaker 2: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light.
[30:39] Speaker 1: By Mitsubishi Electric Heating and Air Conditioning. By UA Local 32.
[30:46] Speaker 1: By Clearwater Casino. And by Delta Airlines. On your home
[30:51] Speaker 1: for the Huskies.
[30:52] Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
[30:56] Speaker 3: All right, well, we're back. Final segment, Husky Hawks, 27-24
[30:59] Speaker 3: loss to Minnesota on Saturday. USC up next Saturday at
[31:03] Speaker 3: 4.30 from the Coliseum. 27 points is the most points
[31:08] Speaker 3: UW has allowed since Ryan Walters has been the defensive
[31:11] Speaker 3: coordinator at UW, by the way. And the first time,
[31:15] Speaker 3: I believe, they've allowed three touchdowns at home.
[31:19] Speaker 2: Since the Illinois game in 2024.
[31:21] Speaker 3: No, sorry, the Michigan game 2024. It's been a long
[31:29] Speaker 3: time since UW has done something like that. They missed
[31:32] Speaker 3: a lot of tackles on defense. Now they've got to
[31:35] Speaker 3: go face Jaden Maieva. King Hill, Mark Bowman, their hotshot
[31:39] Speaker 3: freshman tight end. You've seen USC play. We've all seen
[31:42] Speaker 3: USC play. Huskies are double-digit underdogs. They've gone from double-digit
[31:46] Speaker 3: favorites to double-digit underdogs now on Saturday. What's your gut
[31:50] Speaker 3: feel for this USC game Saturday, Greg?
[31:52] Speaker 6: Well, it really comes down to what does USC do
[31:55] Speaker 6: with the big loss that they had and the suspensions
[31:58] Speaker 6: and all the talk around their coach and him not
[32:02] Speaker 6: being there.
[32:03] Speaker 2: You know, too much longer.
[32:05] Speaker 6: If they give up, if they quit, if they decide
[32:07] Speaker 6: that they've had enough and don't play hard, then we
[32:09] Speaker 6: got a shot. When you think about it, though, talent
[32:12] Speaker 6: for talent, even in the years we beat USC, when
[32:15] Speaker 6: I was there, when Mario was there, they probably had
[32:16] Speaker 6: players that might have been better than us, maybe. And
[32:19] Speaker 6: so they always have talent and they're going to be
[32:21] Speaker 6: talented on Saturday. So if those guys come to play
[32:24] Speaker 6: and they get fired up and they rally behind their
[32:26] Speaker 6: coach and it's in the Coliseum and all those things,
[32:28] Speaker 6: I don't think the Huskies really have a great chance
[32:31] Speaker 6: because we still have not proven that we can do
[32:33] Speaker 6: anything offensively, even against a defense that's not great, that
[32:38] Speaker 6: we can score a ton of points. And USC has
[32:40] Speaker 6: the ability to score points.
[32:42] Speaker 2: They got weapons.
[32:42] Speaker 6: And if those guys come to play, they're going to
[32:45] Speaker 6: score more than 30 points. And I don't see us
[32:47] Speaker 6: scoring more than 30 on anybody right now. Yeah, they
[32:49] Speaker 6: have the athletes. They're more talented than us across the board.
[32:53] Speaker 6: Their offense can score a bunch of points.
[32:56] Speaker 5: And our offense is going to have to score at
[32:58] Speaker 5: least 28, and I can't see us scoring 28. What
[33:01] Speaker 5: we should be trying to do is run them first
[33:04] Speaker 5: and second down and keep that clock moving and keep
[33:07] Speaker 5: their offense off the field. They have a quarterback. They
[33:09] Speaker 5: have a running back. They have a tight end. They
[33:11] Speaker 5: have a couple receivers. They have weapons. Their weakness is
[33:15] Speaker 5: their D, but after watching Minnesota's D, and you can
[33:18] Speaker 5: see DeMond struggling with the blitz and people coming, that's
[33:22] Speaker 5: all i would do is i would blitz him and
[33:23] Speaker 5: figure out a way and because we're not worried about
[33:26] Speaker 5: washington running yeah we're in trouble.
[33:28] Speaker 3: Yeah i just think this is kind of like the
[33:30] Speaker 3: last ditch effort if you can't score on this defense
[33:32] Speaker 3: then who can you score on right i mean this
[33:34] Speaker 3: is the defense that's a sieve right now i mean
[33:36] Speaker 3: they're they're getting into shootouts obviously because their offense is
[33:39] Speaker 3: really really good but i would think that this is
[33:42] Speaker 3: one of those games guys where jed may be able
[33:44] Speaker 3: to be a little bit aggressive and maybe pull out
[33:46] Speaker 3: some stops he's not pulled out so far how desperate
[33:50] Speaker 3: are they how desperate.
[33:53] Speaker 2: Not pull out the third flea flicker.
[33:55] Speaker 3: Well if it works why not no i so what
[33:58] Speaker 3: you know what do you mean why why.
[34:00] Speaker 5: You can't keep pulling out that shows desperateness when you
[34:04] Speaker 5: can when you.
[34:04] Speaker 7: Have i don't care about doing we are definitely we're
[34:06] Speaker 7: not we're not we're not doing i'm following mario's logic
[34:10] Speaker 7: here and you know that's very rare because he's not
[34:13] Speaker 7: usually logical but i'm.
[34:14] Speaker 6: Following it today If you want to slow USC down,
[34:23] Speaker 6: you got to keep control of the football. You got
[34:26] Speaker 6: to keep their offense off the field. And when you
[34:28] Speaker 6: pull out all the stops and you're throwing flea flickers
[34:30] Speaker 6: and all that, what happens in those when they're not successful?
[34:33] Speaker 6: You turn the football over quickly, give them shorter fields.
[34:36] Speaker 6: You go three and outs and you give them more
[34:38] Speaker 6: opportunities to score more. So right now, I'm going to
[34:41] Speaker 6: try to keep the score down. You have a defense
[34:42] Speaker 6: that has been, you know, the last couple of weeks,
[34:45] Speaker 6: I don't know what this missing tackle stuff is the
[34:47] Speaker 6: last couple of weeks. That's kind of looking scary right now.
[34:49] Speaker 1: Right.
[34:50] Speaker 6: But you have a defense that's typically been able to
[34:52] Speaker 6: keep you in football games, right? When they usually make
[34:55] Speaker 6: you earn every yard, every blade of grass you get
[34:57] Speaker 6: a yardage on, they make you earn it. So if
[35:00] Speaker 6: you keep the clock on your side as much as
[35:02] Speaker 6: you can, you run the ball on first down and
[35:05] Speaker 6: you take your time. You run the ball a second down.
[35:07] Speaker 6: You try to get into, especially against their defense, third
[35:11] Speaker 6: and mediums or third and shorts.
[35:12] Speaker 2: Now you got a shot.
[35:13] Speaker 6: You don't have to do fully flickers and all that.
[35:15] Speaker 6: You can use the short passing game to get first down.
[35:17] Speaker 2: Right. You control the clock. Right.
[35:20] Speaker 6: Coach fish, that would be the type of offense that
[35:22] Speaker 6: I'm running. And then you unleash demand when you need
[35:25] Speaker 6: a big play, you get him outside of the pocket,
[35:27] Speaker 6: you get him somewhere where he can be an open
[35:29] Speaker 6: space and you try to hit your big plays that way.
[35:32] Speaker 2: That's the strategy I would use going in. Yeah.
[35:34] Speaker 3: I just think you got a chance to make these
[35:36] Speaker 3: guys quit and make the fans turn on him pretty fast.
[35:38] Speaker 2: Right?
[35:38] Speaker 3: I mean, the fan base is clearly annoyed with this
[35:41] Speaker 3: football team and with their head coach and Lincoln Riley
[35:43] Speaker 3: after what happened last Saturday and not just the loss,
[35:46] Speaker 3: but the way they behaved. I mean, they got, you know, uh,
[35:49] Speaker 3: A defensive back who got suspended for the game for
[35:52] Speaker 3: acting like a clown when Dante Moore is laying on
[35:54] Speaker 3: the turf, by the way.
[35:56] Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley going on the.
[35:58] Speaker 3: Postgame with the media, acting like he's above it all
[36:01] Speaker 3: and had no idea what the hell anybody else was
[36:03] Speaker 3: even talking about. So this fan base feels to me, Mario,
[36:06] Speaker 3: that they are ready to turn.
[36:07] Speaker 2: On these guys fast. Most definitely.
[36:10] Speaker 5: But for that to happen, we'd have to do something
[36:12] Speaker 5: that we don't rarely do, and that's have a fast start.
[36:15] Speaker 5: If we were to come out a fast start and
[36:18] Speaker 5: Washington came out and scored a couple points early in
[36:20] Speaker 5: the first quarter, that's what these fans would do. They
[36:23] Speaker 5: would turn on them as fast as they could. But
[36:25] Speaker 5: we haven't been able to generate any type of offense early, so.
[36:30] Speaker 2: We're just going to have to see what's going to happen.
[36:32] Speaker 3: Well, look, it's again, the more this thing goes down south,
[36:36] Speaker 3: the more the drumbeat is going to continue of criticism.
[36:40] Speaker 3: And I just I don't know where this thing's heading.
[36:42] Speaker 3: I wonder if they have the proper leadership in a
[36:44] Speaker 3: lot of ways from a player perspective. I mean, guys,
[36:47] Speaker 3: some of this is not a surprise that. We're dealing
[36:50] Speaker 3: with a quarterback that tried to quit the team in January.
[36:52] Speaker 3: I mean, I think we stopped there, right? I mean,
[36:55] Speaker 3: how would you guys have responded to that? Maybe different
[36:58] Speaker 3: in the era of NIL when everybody's got a bag
[37:00] Speaker 3: to go get. But if your leader, who's your quarterback,
[37:04] Speaker 3: tried to turn on you and walk out that door,
[37:08] Speaker 3: you know as well as I, there's people in that
[37:10] Speaker 3: room that would not sit well with them no matter
[37:13] Speaker 3: what happened the rest of the year.
[37:14] Speaker 2: Absolutely.
[37:14] Speaker 6: There are going to be people who are going to
[37:16] Speaker 6: be upset with something like that. But you can't say
[37:18] Speaker 6: that everyone would. I know I would have to consider
[37:22] Speaker 6: the fact that this young man is probably the breadwinner
[37:24] Speaker 6: for his entire family. And he's probably never going to
[37:27] Speaker 6: play a down of professional football. Now, I'm not wishing
[37:30] Speaker 6: that on him. He could potentially get there. I just
[37:33] Speaker 6: don't think so, and he has to plan for that.
[37:35] Speaker 6: And if he can make as much money for him
[37:37] Speaker 6: and his family and his future as possible now, that's
[37:40] Speaker 6: something that each person has to make an individual decision
[37:42] Speaker 6: on that.
[37:43] Speaker 2: I'll say this.
[37:44] Speaker 6: There are some people who wouldn't have done that. I
[37:47] Speaker 6: have to be honest there. I can tell you this.
[37:49] Speaker 6: There's a quarterback at the team wearing green just south
[37:53] Speaker 6: of here, right, who could have gone to the NFL and–
[37:57] Speaker 6: realized his dream and made millions of dollars earlier than
[38:00] Speaker 6: he's going to if he goes a year later, right?
[38:03] Speaker 6: And he came back to college football and he got hurt.
[38:06] Speaker 6: He may not, you know, something like that could have
[38:08] Speaker 6: ended his professional aspirations. And he went back to his
[38:12] Speaker 6: team for a chance to win. So there's some people
[38:14] Speaker 6: who wouldn't have made that decision. So it's all an
[38:16] Speaker 6: individual thing. I'm not going to criticize a guy for
[38:19] Speaker 6: making that decision. That's better for him and his family
[38:22] Speaker 6: either way.
[38:23] Speaker 2: All right, well, like you said, we'll see. We will.
[38:26] Speaker 3: See what happens on Saturday. Tom's watch bar, you and
[38:29] Speaker 3: you're out Saturday.
[38:30] Speaker 2: Me and Miles Gaskin. Miles Gaskin. Miles mother effing Gaskin.
[38:35] Speaker 2: Who's the better running back? We'll be filling in between
[38:37] Speaker 2: you and Miles. Oh, Miles for sure.
[38:39] Speaker 3: The question is who is the better pass catcher between
[38:42] Speaker 3: you and Miles Gaskin.
[38:43] Speaker 2: He was a pretty good pass catcher. I love Miles.
[38:45] Speaker 2: He was a great running back, but stop that. 30 touchdowns.
[38:48] Speaker 6: I'm going to tell Miles on Saturday that if he
[38:51] Speaker 6: came to Washington any time between 87 and 90, he'd
[38:54] Speaker 6: have been the second string running back. I don't know.
[38:57] Speaker 2: Whatever. Who has more rushing yards?
[38:59] Speaker 3: Miles Gaskin caught 65 balls.
[39:01] Speaker 2: Who has the most single season rushing yards between me
[39:04] Speaker 2: and Miles? Wow. And I did it in eight games.
[39:07] Speaker 2: Who has the most? Let's ask that. I did it
[39:09] Speaker 2: in eight games.
[39:10] Speaker 6: That's because I came at a time where there were
[39:12] Speaker 6: more depth at the position. Hey, do you guys realize
[39:14] Speaker 6: we're still on the air, by the way?
[39:17] Speaker 2: How many touchdowns? Can we talk about touchdowns?
[39:18] Speaker 3: Take it off the air, boys. Take it off the air. Saturday, 1230,
[39:22] Speaker 3: Tom's Watch Bar. I'm calling Reggie Williams. With Miles and Greg,
[39:25] Speaker 3: I'll be in L.A. We'll talk then on 93.3 KJRFM.
[39:28] Speaker 1: Go Dogs!
