[0:06] Speaker 1: Well, in the words of the immortal legendary former Husky
[0:09] Speaker 1: Stadium public address announcer Lou Gellerman, hello, dog fans, and
[0:13] Speaker 1: thanks for tuning in for the Husky Football Preview podcast
[0:16] Speaker 1: brought to you by Coburn Law, founded by former Husky
[0:19] Speaker 1: athlete Greg Coburn, helping injury victims across Washington fight.
[0:24] Speaker 2: My name is Dave Softy Mahler. It's great to be here.
[0:26] Speaker 1: Just us talking Husky football, previewing what could be Jed
[0:30] Speaker 1: Fish's best year so far. Year three at UW after
[0:33] Speaker 1: a nine and three season last year, highlighted by a
[0:36] Speaker 1: 38 to 10 win over Boise State in the L.A.
[0:39] Speaker 1: Bowl that gave UW nine wins just two years ago.
[0:42] Speaker 1: after the Huskies lost every single offensive starter in the
[0:45] Speaker 1: coaching transition from Kalen DeBoer to Jed Fish. Over 50
[0:49] Speaker 1: new players in year number one to now year three
[0:52] Speaker 1: with established stars like quarterback DeMond Williams, linebacker Jacob Madu
[0:55] Speaker 1: on defense, an offensive line that includes veteran leadership from
[0:59] Speaker 1: players like Drew as a party at right tackle. and
[1:01] Speaker 1: a potential future NFL first-round draft pick in left guard
[1:05] Speaker 1: John Mills. UW coming in at number 17 in the
[1:08] Speaker 1: preseason AP poll, and with games against Wazoo in the
[1:11] Speaker 1: Apple Cup to kick off 2026, Utah State, Eastern, and
[1:15] Speaker 1: Minnesota in the first month may be a chance to
[1:17] Speaker 1: position themselves for... A CFP run and start turning some
[1:21] Speaker 1: heads if they can steal a win against USC in
[1:23] Speaker 1: the Coliseum on the 3rd of October. UW will face,
[1:26] Speaker 1: as of now, five teams in the AP Top 25,
[1:29] Speaker 1: starting with that game against No.
[1:31] Speaker 2: 14 USC.
[1:32] Speaker 1: A Friday night fight the next week at home versus No.
[1:34] Speaker 2: 22 Iowa. And for the first time since 1921, No.
[1:36] Speaker 2: 18 Penn State will come to town.
[1:40] Speaker 1: On November 7th before the Huskies wrap up the year
[1:42] Speaker 1: with back-to-back games against the defending national champions, No. 6 Indiana,
[1:47] Speaker 1: and a road game at No.
[1:48] Speaker 2: 2 Oregon.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Will UW be able to take that next step and
[1:51] Speaker 1: be a part of the 12-team CFP field, or will
[1:54] Speaker 1: they be left on the outside looking in? For that answer,
[1:57] Speaker 1: we turned to longtime Pac-12 network and now NBC analyst,
[2:01] Speaker 1: our friend Yogi Roth, with three questions the Huskies must
[2:05] Speaker 1: answer this year.
[2:07] Speaker 3: You know, I think they got to answer three questions.
[2:08] Speaker 4: I'm not, you know, breaking any news here, but, you know.
[2:11] Speaker 3: Can the left side of this offensive line handle grown
[2:13] Speaker 3: men in the Big Ten?
[2:15] Speaker 4: You know, I don't know.
[2:16] Speaker 3: Cody Green's going to be a monster. John Mills might
[2:18] Speaker 3: be the best offensive lineman in the Big Ten. Can
[2:22] Speaker 3: they handle the horse they're going to come through that place?
[2:24] Speaker 3: Question two is, can their wideouts win a man-to-man coverage?
[2:27] Speaker 3: You know, like, if you're going to play DeMond Williams, like,
[2:29] Speaker 3: you got to give up something somewhere. So can guys separate?
[2:32] Speaker 3: We're going to find out because they're not really that
[2:34] Speaker 3: proven yet. And then I'm so curious for DeMond. What
[2:38] Speaker 3: does he do on the road against the real ones?
[2:40] Speaker 3: And those are my three questions. And I'd imagine those
[2:43] Speaker 3: are everybody's three questions to a large degree because those
[2:46] Speaker 3: are areas where they either struggled a year ago, playing
[2:50] Speaker 3: well on the road, especially quarterback, and then this is
[2:53] Speaker 3: an offensive line that is really talented. And next year, oh,
[2:56] Speaker 3: my God, they're going to be so good, I think,
[2:58] Speaker 3: if they can hold everything together like we might imagine.
[3:00] Speaker 4: But this year, they'll be shot.
[3:01] Speaker 1: That left side of the offensive line Yogi talked about
[3:03] Speaker 1: includes pure freshman, first-year player, 18-year-old Cody Green. Five-star recruit,
[3:09] Speaker 1: coveted by everybody, but chose to come back home to
[3:11] Speaker 1: Washington where he played for Eastside Catholic after spending two
[3:15] Speaker 1: years in California at Matter Day. I had a chance
[3:18] Speaker 1: to catch up with Cody this summer and asked him
[3:20] Speaker 1: who his mentors at UW are and who he likes
[3:23] Speaker 1: to model his game after at just the age of
[3:26] Speaker 1: 18 years old.
[3:27] Speaker 5: I feel like John Mills and Drew as a party.
[3:29] Speaker 5: John Mills because he was also a freshman last year,
[3:32] Speaker 5: and I feel like him being next to me, if
[3:34] Speaker 5: I have a question, he knows all the answers. And
[3:36] Speaker 5: then Drew, having one of the most experience on the team,
[3:40] Speaker 5: I feel like as also another tackle, I'm able to
[3:44] Speaker 5: ask him questions, ask him little things about my game,
[3:47] Speaker 5: and he always has an answer for me.
[3:49] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[3:49] Speaker 2: Do you model your game after anybody?
[3:53] Speaker 5: I would say I feel like Trent Williams.
[3:55] Speaker 7: Okay. Okay. I feel like him.
[3:56] Speaker 2: That'll work.
[3:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd say if Cody Green turns into Trent Williams,
[3:59] Speaker 1: that works for everybody, right? 12-time pro bowler and a
[4:02] Speaker 1: five-time All-Pro, that works.
[4:03] Speaker 2: But you know what?
[4:04] Speaker 1: Cody Green will have some help in the form of
[4:06] Speaker 1: another guy who knows what it's like to play at
[4:08] Speaker 1: a very young age, second-year player John Mills at right guard,
[4:13] Speaker 1: who talked about his first year and how they may
[4:16] Speaker 1: have turned UW's offensive line into a strength on this
[4:20] Speaker 1: football team.
[4:20] Speaker 6: Well, I think it's definitely fair to call him the
[4:24] Speaker 6: Hatcher brothers and as a party, uh, a strength in
[4:26] Speaker 6: the O-line, they're, they're absolutely ballers. Um, the way they've
[4:30] Speaker 6: been working as well, just taking me under their wing, um,
[4:33] Speaker 6: they're leaders in this team and they're amazing offensive linemen. Um,
[4:37] Speaker 6: so I'm, I think so. I mean, this offensive line,
[4:40] Speaker 6: we've been working very hard this off season. And like
[4:43] Speaker 6: I said, coach Swift, coach Brew and the strength staff
[4:45] Speaker 6: has just taken us. Um, we're trying to just get
[4:49] Speaker 6: to the place where you can be the Joe Moore
[4:50] Speaker 6: award and we're trying to get there every day. So,
[4:53] Speaker 6: I'm really, really excited for this season and to showcase
[4:56] Speaker 6: our talent, how hard we've been working.
[4:59] Speaker 1: That left side has so much promise, so much hype,
[5:01] Speaker 1: but can they come together fast as Yogi Roth wondered
[5:04] Speaker 1: and take on Big Ten defensive linemen in the most
[5:06] Speaker 1: physical conference in college football? Well, for that answer, here's
[5:10] Speaker 1: UW offensive line coach Michael Switzer on what he thinks
[5:14] Speaker 1: of the new hopefully star left tackle in Cody Green
[5:17] Speaker 1: and why he's being given a starting spot at such.
[5:20] Speaker 2: A young age. Cody's very unique.
[5:22] Speaker 8: He's driven in a way that you don't traditionally see
[5:27] Speaker 8: in a young man who's 18 years old. He put
[5:30] Speaker 8: something out on spring break before spring ball started. He's
[5:34] Speaker 8: going to Cleveland to train with Charles Bentley instead of
[5:37] Speaker 8: going on vacation.
[5:39] Speaker 4: Love it.
[5:39] Speaker 8: This guy is wired in a very unique way. I'd
[5:43] Speaker 8: say kind of similarly to how John Mills was kind
[5:46] Speaker 8: of wired last year. They're very serious about– what they're doing.
[5:50] Speaker 8: They're very serious about becoming a great football player. They're
[5:54] Speaker 8: very serious about how they put themselves in position to
[5:58] Speaker 8: be able to do this because you don't just walk
[6:00] Speaker 8: in and you're the starting left tackle. Cody worked really,
[6:02] Speaker 8: really hard the first day he was on campus meeting
[6:07] Speaker 8: with myself and Coach Brewster and learning the offense and
[6:09] Speaker 8: having an understanding of how we communicate, how we talk football,
[6:12] Speaker 8: what's the defensive identification before we even talk about a play.
[6:16] Speaker 8: He took that very seriously and his mindset has put
[6:19] Speaker 8: him in a position to to play left tackle for us.
[6:23] Speaker 2: Star recruits are great. Big names are great.
[6:25] Speaker 1: But for UW to truly take that next step this year,
[6:28] Speaker 1: it's all about finishing. For Jed Fish, it's the one
[6:31] Speaker 1: thing they must do in 2026 that they did not
[6:35] Speaker 1: do consistently in 2025. Here's the coach on taking that
[6:39] Speaker 1: next step in the fourth quarter.
[6:41] Speaker 9: I think the biggest thing for us is to be
[6:43] Speaker 9: able to finish. And, you know, as we look through
[6:47] Speaker 9: where we are as a program, Going into year three,
[6:51] Speaker 9: we squandered some opportunities. And my hope is that this
[6:55] Speaker 9: year we have an opportunity to just finish. We're a
[7:00] Speaker 9: 7-6 halftime game against Ohio State, 7-7 against Michigan, 10-3
[7:05] Speaker 9: against Wisconsin. So you're sitting there in these games and
[7:09] Speaker 9: you're right there in it. But depth is a factor.
[7:13] Speaker 9: And I'm excited to see where our guys can be.
[7:15] Speaker 9: I think the fact that we have such great continuity,
[7:19] Speaker 9: We'll add to it. But every game's a battle. We're
[7:21] Speaker 9: in a different world. So I don't look at this year.
[7:25] Speaker 9: I got to look at it differently than last year.
[7:27] Speaker 9: I got to say every year is its own year
[7:28] Speaker 9: now here in the Big Ten because there's so many
[7:32] Speaker 9: changes constantly with roster management and the dollars that are
[7:37] Speaker 9: invested in certain programs. So I'm just looking forward to
[7:40] Speaker 9: going out there and competing and seeing how many we
[7:42] Speaker 9: can win.
[7:42] Speaker 1: The biggest difference, though, in Jed Fish's eyes as far
[7:45] Speaker 1: as the roster from 2025 to 2026, without question, the
[7:50] Speaker 1: big boys up front.
[7:51] Speaker 9: We had seven offensive linemen when I showed up here,
[7:55] Speaker 9: and two of those seven were coming off of ACL injuries.
[7:59] Speaker 9: And now we're sitting here with 17 offensive linemen, and
[8:04] Speaker 9: I would argue that seven of them can start in
[8:06] Speaker 9: a Big Ten in about almost every team we have
[8:09] Speaker 9: out here. So it's a huge difference there. I think
[8:12] Speaker 9: that's where it starts. And then I would say our
[8:14] Speaker 9: defensive line and our linebacking core, you could see just
[8:17] Speaker 9: such a huge difference. So it's been fun, you know,
[8:21] Speaker 9: get to nine wins in our second year. You know,
[8:23] Speaker 9: only been done, I think, nine times in the last
[8:25] Speaker 9: 30 years at UW. and obviously first time doing it
[8:29] Speaker 9: in the Big Ten. So pretty cool about where we're
[8:32] Speaker 9: at and excited about where we're going.
[8:33] Speaker 1: New faces on offense, but how about on defense? This
[8:36] Speaker 1: is a UWD that finished last year 15th in the
[8:39] Speaker 1: country in scoring defense and never gave up more than
[8:42] Speaker 1: 26 points. For UW defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, though, he's
[8:47] Speaker 1: also got some new young talent on the line of scrimmage,
[8:49] Speaker 1: including 18-year-old Derek Coleman-Brusaw from Kennedy, who turned down offers
[8:54] Speaker 1: from Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, and USC to name just
[8:58] Speaker 1: a few to come play football in front of his
[9:00] Speaker 1: family on Montlake.
[9:02] Speaker 7: When I first got here, you know, you're looking at
[9:04] Speaker 7: his junior tape, and, you know, I think he was
[9:06] Speaker 7: playing around 250, 260. Right.
[9:07] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[9:10] Speaker 7: And he jumps off the screen, you know, just the
[9:13] Speaker 7: way he, his motor off the edge, his get off.
[9:15] Speaker 7: You know, saw him in camp that summer. And, you know,
[9:19] Speaker 7: same thing, just his get off was unreal. And then
[9:23] Speaker 7: as you kind of go through the, I remember our
[9:25] Speaker 7: first in-home visit. And great family, by the way. Like,
[9:29] Speaker 7: his family is awesome.
[9:30] Speaker 2: Yep.
[9:31] Speaker 7: And, you know, we sit down for this big meal.
[9:34] Speaker 7: And DCB's got, like, the biggest plate I've ever seen.
[9:39] Speaker 7: I'm like, okay, he's going to get big. He finishes
[9:42] Speaker 7: that plate and gets another plate the same size. I
[9:46] Speaker 7: remember calling Fish on the way back from the in-home
[9:51] Speaker 7: just to give him a recap. I'm like, this kid's
[9:53] Speaker 7: going to be 300 pounds before you know it. You
[9:55] Speaker 7: wouldn't believe the amount of food he just consumed at dinner.
[9:58] Speaker 7: It wasn't shocked just because of the way he is
[10:02] Speaker 7: the the frame he has but I think he'll be
[10:07] Speaker 7: special inside with his he already has that twitch the
[10:10] Speaker 7: skill set right now he's got the size to back that.
[10:13] Speaker 1: Up One question facing UW's defense, though, is the secondary.
[10:17] Speaker 1: After losing players like Takario Davis and Ephesians Prysock to
[10:20] Speaker 1: the NFL draft, what does UW's new-look secondary look like?
[10:24] Speaker 2: Here again is D.C.
[10:25] Speaker 1: Ryan Walters on what the 2026 Husky secondary could.
[10:30] Speaker 2: Be all about.
[10:31] Speaker 7: I'm really excited about our secondary room, specifically at corner.
[10:36] Speaker 7: You look at a guy like Dylan Robinson, who had
[10:39] Speaker 7: starts last season. He lined up. His first start was
[10:42] Speaker 7: against Jeremiah Smith playing against Ohio State.
[10:44] Speaker 2: That's right.
[10:45] Speaker 7: So that kind of tells you what type of mind
[10:47] Speaker 7: frame he has and the kind of competitive nature that
[10:51] Speaker 7: he's built with. And then we brought in Emmanuel Carnley
[10:56] Speaker 7: from Virginia who had prior relationships with the staff from
[10:59] Speaker 7: his Arizona days, and he is as advertised. You know,
[11:02] Speaker 7: it's a guy that has played on an ACC team
[11:05] Speaker 7: that had 11 wins and he started all those games,
[11:08] Speaker 7: and he's got a ton of experience, and that experience shows.
[11:12] Speaker 7: He understands splits and route trees and is sticky in coverage.
[11:17] Speaker 7: The young guy that stood out is Jaron Jones. He's
[11:21] Speaker 7: been able to play inside, play outside, and he's another
[11:25] Speaker 7: one that does not look like an 18-year-old, and he
[11:27] Speaker 7: can cover, plays man coverage very well. So we've got
[11:30] Speaker 7: a good group, man. I'm excited about those guys, and
[11:34] Speaker 7: I think we'll be primed to have a good secondary.
[11:38] Speaker 1: Will this be the team that beats Oregon? Will this
[11:40] Speaker 1: be the team that challenges for a big 10 championship,
[11:43] Speaker 1: a CFP birth more Christian Capo from onmontlake.com thinks this
[11:47] Speaker 1: might be Jed fish's best chance so far at UW yet.
[11:51] Speaker 10: It looks like Jed fish's most talented team so far. They,
[11:55] Speaker 10: they look bigger. They look more athletic. They look more
[11:57] Speaker 10: like a big 10 team. Um, you can see the
[12:00] Speaker 10: team strengths pretty clearly. I mean, I think you could
[12:03] Speaker 10: have looked on paper and just looked at the roster
[12:05] Speaker 10: and said, the linebackers are going to be pretty good
[12:07] Speaker 10: just because of the experience and some of the names
[12:09] Speaker 10: they have back, but really watching that position group. And honestly,
[12:13] Speaker 10: the defense generally kind of, I think, you know, what
[12:16] Speaker 10: they ended up with a top 20 scoring defense last year.
[12:19] Speaker 10: And I think with what they had talent wise, probably
[12:22] Speaker 10: felt pretty good about how things went on that side
[12:23] Speaker 10: of the ball.
[12:25] Speaker 4: I really think that.
[12:25] Speaker 10: Could be the strength of their team this year. And,
[12:27] Speaker 10: and probably is, going to have to be to beat
[12:30] Speaker 10: some of the teams they got coming into Husky Stadium
[12:32] Speaker 10: this year.
[12:33] Speaker 1: By the way, it's not just the local yokels in
[12:34] Speaker 1: the media who think UW is on the come. How
[12:37] Speaker 1: about a national take from Phil Steele, from Phil Steele's
[12:40] Speaker 1: college football preview on what he thinks UW may be
[12:42] Speaker 1: all about in 2026?
[12:44] Speaker 11: Yeah, I think Washington is close. They're not one that
[12:48] Speaker 11: I named right at the beginning, but they are clearly
[12:50] Speaker 11: going to be a contender this year. They do lose
[12:52] Speaker 11: their top running back and the top receiver from last year.
[12:55] Speaker 11: But I think they filled in well. And when you've
[12:56] Speaker 11: got the quarterback and the offensive line, you're solid. You know,
[12:59] Speaker 11: you've got the top three in the Big Ten this year, Softie.
[13:02] Speaker 11: I think then you have four teams contending for that
[13:05] Speaker 11: number four spot. USC, Michigan, Penn State, and Washington are
[13:09] Speaker 11: all in contention for that number four spot and a
[13:12] Speaker 11: potential playoff spot. And, in fact, I think when you
[13:14] Speaker 11: look at Washington this year, they've got a top 20
[13:17] Speaker 11: offense and a top 20 defense. They do have to
[13:20] Speaker 11: play USC on the road and Nebraska on the road.
[13:22] Speaker 9: Right.
[13:23] Speaker 11: But this is a team that with two games to go,
[13:25] Speaker 11: they host Indiana and travel to Oregon with two games
[13:29] Speaker 11: to go. They're going to be in the playoff thing
[13:31] Speaker 11: and beat Indiana at home.
[13:34] Speaker 9: Yeah.
[13:34] Speaker 11: Boom. You got a great shot of getting there. So
[13:37] Speaker 11: I think Jed Fish has done a good job.
[13:38] Speaker 1: Plenty of opportunities on this schedule for you, Dub, but
[13:41] Speaker 1: also plenty of questions. Who will shine at running back
[13:44] Speaker 1: after Jonah Coleman graduated for the NFL this Well, the
[13:47] Speaker 1: receiver core produced another high NFL draft pick like Denzel
[13:51] Speaker 1: Boston last year. UW fans already know names like Desmond
[13:54] Speaker 1: Roebuck at wide receiver, but this year you'll get to
[13:57] Speaker 1: know names like running back Quade Carr and Jaden Lamar.
[14:00] Speaker 1: The transfer from Oregon every year brings new faces. But
[14:03] Speaker 1: in this turnstile era of college football, there's usually more
[14:06] Speaker 1: than less. What do you say we take a short
[14:08] Speaker 1: break and come back and hear from former UW tight
[14:11] Speaker 1: end and Husky radio analyst Cam Cleland with his thoughts
[14:15] Speaker 1: on the 2026 Dogs as the Husky Football Preview podcast
[14:19] Speaker 1: presented by Corbin Law continues right after this.
[14:22] Speaker 2: Injuries are tough. I know firsthand.
[14:24] Speaker 12: I'm Greg Colburn, former Husky athlete and injury survivor. I

[14:48] Speaker 12: That's C-O-L-B-U-R-N law.com.
[14:55] Speaker 2: All right, Dawg fans, we are back.
[14:57] Speaker 1: The Husky Football Preview podcast presented by Coburn Law, founded
[15:01] Speaker 1: by former Husky athlete Greg Coburn, helping injury victims across
[15:04] Speaker 1: Washington fight and win. Speaking of ex-Huskies, maybe one of
[15:09] Speaker 1: the most famous ex-Huskies of all time. At least that's
[15:12] Speaker 1: what he'll tell you. Former UW tight end, former NFL veteran,
[15:16] Speaker 1: and now the color analyst for Husky Football Radio broadcasts
[15:21] Speaker 1: every single week throughout the Husky football season. My friend
[15:25] Speaker 1: and longtime dog, Cam Cleland, joining us right here on
[15:28] Speaker 1: the Husky Football Preview Podcast with some thoughts on 2026.
[15:33] Speaker 2: Cam, thanks for doing this. How are you, man?
[15:35] Speaker 11: Yeah, man.
[15:38] Speaker 13: The key question, I would say, is how are you doing?
[15:41] Speaker 4: How are things for you?
[15:43] Speaker 13: You know, we sit around and we wait for football season,
[15:47] Speaker 13: and I know you're fiending through this Mariner debacle, but
[15:50] Speaker 13: now it's football season and we can appreciate it.
[15:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, I am. I am ready to rock, man, as
[15:54] Speaker 2: you are.
[15:55] Speaker 11: I am.
[15:55] Speaker 2: I'm ready to go.
[15:56] Speaker 1: It's funny how quickly these seasons come and go and
[15:59] Speaker 1: you sit around just tapping your fingers, right? You know,
[16:02] Speaker 1: twiddling your thumbs, waiting for September for the next year. But,
[16:06] Speaker 1: you know, we spoke and talked a lot in the
[16:08] Speaker 1: first segment about this team being more ready now than
[16:11] Speaker 1: ever to to compete in the Big Ten, right, especially
[16:14] Speaker 1: on the line of scrimmage. Give us your thoughts there.
[16:17] Speaker 1: As a guy who was asked to block every now
[16:19] Speaker 1: and then, as a former tight end, by the way,
[16:21] Speaker 1: on the transition and the progress that this program has
[16:25] Speaker 1: made from year one under Jed Fish to where they
[16:28] Speaker 1: are now with those big boys up front on both
[16:32] Speaker 1: sides of the ball.
[16:33] Speaker 13: Well, if you listen to Coach Fish, at least this is–
[16:38] Speaker 13: about as clear as it gets with every coach. It's
[16:40] Speaker 13: his third year. It's all his guys. There's just a
[16:42] Speaker 13: few left over really on this roster from his, his
[16:46] Speaker 13: first year. And now he has his guys up front.
[16:48] Speaker 13: He's always made the comment of, we need to get
[16:51] Speaker 13: bigger because you have to win the conference. And, If
[16:53] Speaker 13: you're going to beat teams like Indiana, if you're going
[16:55] Speaker 13: to beat teams like Ohio State and Michigan and Oregon
[16:59] Speaker 13: that have been perennially, sorry, in those moments of needing
[17:02] Speaker 13: to win this conference, you had to get bigger. But
[17:04] Speaker 13: also the way this conference is built, it's built at the.
[17:07] Speaker 4: Line of scrimmage. You're going to have.
[17:09] Speaker 13: To find a way to win in the running game
[17:12] Speaker 13: and protecting your quarterback. And so what did Coach Fish
[17:15] Speaker 13: go out and do? He got big guys. He got
[17:17] Speaker 13: Cody Green. He got guys like John Mills on the
[17:19] Speaker 13: offensive line. He signed big freshmen. like Derek Coleman-Bruscia. He
[17:25] Speaker 13: bought in big athletes and guys in the transfer portal
[17:28] Speaker 13: because everybody had to get bigger, faster, stronger.
[17:30] Speaker 4: It's a cliche. It's just that's how it is. Everybody
[17:33] Speaker 4: says bigger, faster, stronger.
[17:34] Speaker 13: But if you're going to win here in the end
[17:36] Speaker 13: and you've got to get to November and you're going
[17:38] Speaker 13: to make a push in the playoffs, you better have depth, physicality,
[17:41] Speaker 13: and size and find a way to beat teams at
[17:45] Speaker 13: the line of scrimmage.
[17:46] Speaker 1: Well, we talked a lot in the first segment about
[17:48] Speaker 1: those two young guys you mentioned there with Cody Green
[17:50] Speaker 1: and Derek Coleman-Bruce. John Mills obviously is a star right
[17:54] Speaker 1: cam in the making at left guard.
[17:56] Speaker 2: He's got NFL written all over him.
[17:58] Speaker 1: Husky fans might want to, you know, hunker down and
[18:01] Speaker 1: get used to seeing him for two years max left
[18:04] Speaker 1: at UW because he might be a goddard after his
[18:06] Speaker 1: junior season. But what about the Hatchet brothers? What about
[18:09] Speaker 1: guys like Drew as a party, by the way? What
[18:13] Speaker 1: about the depth on the offensive line? Talk to us
[18:15] Speaker 1: about that.
[18:16] Speaker 13: Well, it's, I mean, if you watched the mock game
[18:20] Speaker 13: that went on on Saturday and I was there going
[18:22] Speaker 13: to kind of looking at depth and looking at guys
[18:24] Speaker 13: that wanted to see, you didn't get.
[18:26] Speaker 4: A chance to see Landon Hatchett. They're still holding him out.
[18:28] Speaker 13: So you got a lot of Colt Dietrich who ran
[18:30] Speaker 13: at center position, big transfer athlete, really good looking guy. Now,
[18:34] Speaker 13: whatever the situation here is with Landon Hatchett, we don't
[18:37] Speaker 13: know yet, but I'm sure they're just protecting him moving in.
[18:40] Speaker 13: And then Gary is the guy that's been there.
[18:41] Speaker 4: A long time.
[18:42] Speaker 13: And he's a seasoned, when I say seasoned veteran, veteran,
[18:45] Speaker 13: He's a seasoned veteran, a guy that's had that kind
[18:48] Speaker 13: of physicality. And then Champ needs to get healthy. So
[18:51] Speaker 13: your depth and your size is there in that group.
[18:54] Speaker 13: My only thing is, I know you talked a little
[18:56] Speaker 13: about Cody Green, his youth on the outside. Talk about
[18:58] Speaker 13: experience in Indiana, experience in Miami in the national championship game.
[19:03] Speaker 13: You watch, we're talking 16 to 18 fourth or fifth
[19:08] Speaker 13: year players on those rosters. If we want to see
[19:11] Speaker 13: young players, got to get them reps and got to
[19:13] Speaker 13: get them experience early because you know you could ask
[19:16] Speaker 13: all right let's have them have four years of experience
[19:19] Speaker 13: but we don't have that luxury this year so there's
[19:21] Speaker 13: got to be a lot of reps and you have
[19:23] Speaker 13: to get these young guys in that line of scrimmage
[19:25] Speaker 13: and up against great talent early in the season because
[19:28] Speaker 13: this stretch run for our program late through november it's
[19:31] Speaker 13: just it's going to be a gauntlet man it's going
[19:34] Speaker 13: to be so you up front youth in size, protecting,
[19:38] Speaker 13: running the football.
[19:39] Speaker 4: It's cliche over and over again, but these guys.
[19:42] Speaker 13: Now, this most experienced line, Dave, we've seen since that
[19:45] Speaker 13: 2023 season, and that's something you have to lean on.
[19:48] Speaker 2: No, no doubt.
[19:49] Speaker 1: Well, Cam Cleveland's with us here, former Husky tight end,
[19:52] Speaker 1: UW color radio analyst with us on the air, and
[19:55] Speaker 1: all brought to you by our friends at Coburn Law.
[19:58] Speaker 1: By the way, you mentioned the running game. You know,
[20:00] Speaker 1: Jordan Coleman gone to the NFL. Jordan Washington right now
[20:05] Speaker 1: banged up. Adam Muhammad's at Cal, so he's not a
[20:08] Speaker 1: part of the program anymore. And you look at the
[20:11] Speaker 1: depth chart, and you really do see, at least from
[20:14] Speaker 1: kind of a public-facing perspective, Tons of new names, right?
[20:17] Speaker 1: Jaden Lamar, the transfer from Oregon. Trey Cooley, the transfer.
[20:21] Speaker 1: Quade Carr, the transfer. Brian Bonner is a freshman. Is
[20:24] Speaker 1: there anybody who's kind of caught your eye as spring ball,
[20:27] Speaker 1: fall camp that you think will eventually emerge as the
[20:30] Speaker 1: bell cow for that group? Or do you truly see
[20:33] Speaker 1: a running back by committee all year long?
[20:36] Speaker 13: I think it's the latter. I think, like you said,
[20:38] Speaker 13: I think there's a little bit. You're going to wait
[20:39] Speaker 13: and see what Jaden Lamar and how he turns out, certainly.
[20:43] Speaker 4: He has the most.
[20:44] Speaker 13: We were talking about those two with Trey Cooley. You're
[20:46] Speaker 13: talking about guys that are veteran running backs. Here I
[20:49] Speaker 13: go again with that same comment about a redshirt senior
[20:52] Speaker 13: and a senior transfer, both transfers.
[20:54] Speaker 4: You know, Brian Bonner looked really good. Quade Carr also
[20:58] Speaker 4: looked good.
[20:58] Speaker 13: These are younger guys, and this is– Now, you're going
[21:01] Speaker 13: to win with some older players, certainly, but I think
[21:04] Speaker 13: Coach Fish loves playing freshmen. He likes getting those guys,
[21:08] Speaker 13: and I think you mentioned it early about getting used
[21:11] Speaker 13: to seeing these young guys or appreciate them now because
[21:14] Speaker 13: they could be gone very quickly. I think he understands
[21:16] Speaker 13: that and how valuable it is to get younger players
[21:20] Speaker 13: early and get them developed early. So I think we're
[21:22] Speaker 13: going to get these first four games and plus in
[21:26] Speaker 13: this Apple cup game, I think we're seeing a lot
[21:27] Speaker 13: of guys still fighting to see who's going to be
[21:30] Speaker 13: that guy.
[21:30] Speaker 4: Who's going to be the one that's going to carry.
[21:32] Speaker 13: If we get somebody with 20 to 25 carries by
[21:35] Speaker 13: the end of the season, that's the guy I want
[21:37] Speaker 13: to see come week five, when you got to go
[21:40] Speaker 13: on the road and you got to go play USC.
[21:41] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[21:42] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:43] Speaker 1: Well, Cam, let's stay on the offense and just kind
[21:45] Speaker 1: of keep moving to the outside, but we can't skip
[21:47] Speaker 1: over your favorite position tight end. And I mean, obviously
[21:50] Speaker 1: Decker to graph is the most recognizable name, right at
[21:53] Speaker 1: that position, but some new faces there, some guys that
[21:57] Speaker 1: we think may be able to step up and surprise
[22:00] Speaker 1: some people, Kate Eldridge, Baron Naomi, Austin Simmons, give us
[22:04] Speaker 1: your take on as a former tight end, man, concerns, strengths,
[22:09] Speaker 1: what do you make of the group in 2026?
[22:12] Speaker 13: Well, I'm really happy to have Cade Eldridge back, certainly
[22:14] Speaker 13: coming off his injury. Right now, you're going to see
[22:18] Speaker 13: him all over the place at true H-back. So he'll
[22:21] Speaker 13: play in the I formation. He'll be behind when quarterback's
[22:24] Speaker 13: under center. He'll be in the slot. He'll be in offset.
[22:28] Speaker 13: He's a bunch of– he's super versatile, really good athlete.
[22:31] Speaker 13: The three guys you mentioned, Becker, Cade, and Barron, are
[22:34] Speaker 13: the three that you're going to be a lot of focus.
[22:36] Speaker 13: You'll probably get some Austin also, Simmons, but those three
[22:40] Speaker 13: and the one– That wears number 85 and he happens
[22:43] Speaker 13: to be a little ginger also. Now when he comes
[22:46] Speaker 13: out of Westland down here in Oregon. So I watched
[22:48] Speaker 13: him in high school, got to see him grow up
[22:50] Speaker 13: to be a great athlete. He's put on weight. He's
[22:52] Speaker 13: put on size. He's physical at the line of scrimmage.
[22:56] Speaker 13: And if you're replacing a Quinton Moore like last year,
[22:59] Speaker 13: it is in the edge. It's the outside control. It's
[23:01] Speaker 13: the outside linebackers. It's the nine technique blocking from wide zone.
[23:05] Speaker 13: And the number one run in the Husky offense is
[23:07] Speaker 13: wide zone. So if you're on have a tight end
[23:10] Speaker 13: that can control the outside line of scrimmage, it's going
[23:13] Speaker 13: to be Barron's job this year to have his hand
[23:15] Speaker 13: in the ground and do a great job. And he's
[23:17] Speaker 13: physical and enough size to be vertical and fast and
[23:21] Speaker 13: the guy that has to have 30, 40 catches this
[23:24] Speaker 13: year in a vertical threat, seven routes, corner routes over
[23:28] Speaker 13: the balls. It's all Decker to graph this year. He's
[23:31] Speaker 13: a big target other than having a big wide receiver
[23:34] Speaker 13: with Christian Moss and the group.
[23:36] Speaker 1: Right.
[23:36] Speaker 13: Demond has to have a tight end over the middle.
[23:38] Speaker 13: That's a big, easy target to throw to because you're
[23:41] Speaker 13: replacing a Denzel Boston. So that's a guy that has
[23:44] Speaker 13: to be a vertical threat.
[23:46] Speaker 4: And that's Decker.
[23:46] Speaker 1: Well, you mentioned Christian Moss on the outside as the
[23:49] Speaker 1: ex-receiver of Virginia Tech transfer, right? Kennesaw State. Redshirt senior,
[23:54] Speaker 1: been around for a long time at 6'3, but, I mean,
[23:57] Speaker 1: Desmond Roebuck is back, and there's a lot of new, right?
[24:00] Speaker 1: Rasheed Williams obviously is back as well, but a lot
[24:02] Speaker 1: of talk about Jordan Clay over spring ball and fall camp.
[24:07] Speaker 1: A lot of talk about Christian Moss as well, so...
[24:10] Speaker 1: We're kind of getting used to Cam and getting spoiled
[24:13] Speaker 1: around here with these first and second round draft picks,
[24:16] Speaker 1: a wide receiver, including Denzel Boston to the Browns a
[24:19] Speaker 1: year ago.
[24:20] Speaker 2: Do we have another one in this bunch? You think?
[24:23] Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, I'm going to take a lot. This
[24:26] Speaker 13: is another committee, a great talent. We haven't seen that
[24:28] Speaker 13: guy pop. We certainly know that Dez is going to be,
[24:31] Speaker 13: in my opinion, right now Dez is number one. It's
[24:33] Speaker 13: the most comfortable. I'm on feels. I mean, these guys
[24:36] Speaker 13: have been together since they're kids. They have the connection.
[24:40] Speaker 13: They look alike.
[24:40] Speaker 4: They throw each other. So there's that.
[24:43] Speaker 13: I mean, Dez is going to be all over the
[24:44] Speaker 13: field from inside and out.
[24:46] Speaker 4: My question is, who's going to be the Z or
[24:50] Speaker 4: the wide X player?
[24:51] Speaker 13: That takes a little bit of top that takes the
[24:53] Speaker 13: skinny posts and goes the deep tread on the outside. Big,
[24:57] Speaker 13: easy targets. I mean, when you're a quarterback, you love
[24:59] Speaker 13: throwing the guys that have a wide angle, arm length
[25:03] Speaker 13: and extension right now. Metrics is Christian Moss, Rasheed Williams. Also,
[25:08] Speaker 13: these guys are going to have to step up. What
[25:10] Speaker 13: personnels are available? Are Coach Fish going to call? Is
[25:14] Speaker 13: he going to call a lot of 11 personnel, which
[25:16] Speaker 13: is one back and two and three wide receivers? Are
[25:18] Speaker 13: we going to see some 12 with two tight ends
[25:20] Speaker 13: mixing it up? But I think the wide receiver might be,
[25:24] Speaker 13: along with running back, we're in a little bit of
[25:26] Speaker 13: wait and see. Who's going to be those second and
[25:29] Speaker 13: three guys that we depend on?
[25:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Cam Cleveland's with us right here on the
[25:33] Speaker 1: Husky Football Preview podcast presented by our friends at Coburn Lawn.
[25:37] Speaker 1: Cam talked to both Ryan Walters and Jed Fish at
[25:40] Speaker 1: separate times over the offseason and asked them both, what's
[25:44] Speaker 1: the strength of the defense? And before I could even
[25:46] Speaker 1: get done asking the questions, they mentioned linebacker, right? With
[25:50] Speaker 1: a ton of guys back, including... Jacob Manu, Buda Alukda,
[25:54] Speaker 1: X-Ray Alexander, Zedrius.
[25:57] Speaker 2: Rainey Saleh looks like a man.
[25:59] Speaker 1: I saw him last week, and my God, it's been
[26:02] Speaker 1: a long time since we've had a guy that looks
[26:04] Speaker 1: like him. Do you agree with the assessment from the
[26:07] Speaker 1: coaches that that linebacker might be the strength of that defense?
[26:11] Speaker 13: No, I think there are three NFL to four NFL
[26:13] Speaker 13: guys right there, easily.
[26:15] Speaker 4: I think this is the deepest room. on the team.
[26:18] Speaker 13: I think it's the, I think it's the, one of
[26:19] Speaker 13: the best groups, if not the best group in the
[26:21] Speaker 13: country with depth. Now that you have extra, you have
[26:24] Speaker 13: Jacob and you said everybody there with Buddha coming back
[26:27] Speaker 13: off his, off his injury and how good did he
[26:30] Speaker 13: look on Saturday?
[26:31] Speaker 4: He looked great. He was bouncing.
[26:34] Speaker 13: Didn't see a lot of the Darius Randy Saleh because
[26:36] Speaker 13: he was still recovering. They kept a few guys out
[26:38] Speaker 13: strategically on the defense, like Dylan Robinson also, but going
[26:42] Speaker 13: back to the linebackers, he hit the nail on the head, man,
[26:44] Speaker 13: to have that depth, to be able to have run
[26:47] Speaker 13: support and to be able to create a rotation.
[26:50] Speaker 4: I mean, that's one thing you see in defenses.
[26:53] Speaker 13: You don't see an O-line rotation in progression of a series,
[26:58] Speaker 13: but boy, do you see linebacker rotation, D-line rotation in
[27:02] Speaker 13: and out, depending on how teams go defensively. So this
[27:05] Speaker 13: is it's it's a great bunch of riches to be
[27:08] Speaker 13: able to have that talent at the linebacker room.
[27:10] Speaker 1: I remember being down at USC for a Husky game, man,
[27:13] Speaker 1: darn near about 20 years ago and walking down the
[27:16] Speaker 1: sideline after the game and seeing Ray Malauga and Brian Cushing,
[27:19] Speaker 1: guys like that thinking, man, our guys look nothing like
[27:22] Speaker 1: those guys. And you're starting to get kind of feel
[27:24] Speaker 1: like maybe they do look like those guys now. So
[27:26] Speaker 1: great job out of Ryan Walters and Jed Fish of
[27:28] Speaker 1: restocking that linebacker group. But they're going to have to
[27:31] Speaker 1: restock the secondary man. A couple of guys are gone
[27:33] Speaker 1: in the NFL. Ephesians Price sock to Cario Davis. There
[27:36] Speaker 1: are some familiar names, but I guess the question is,
[27:39] Speaker 1: who is the leader? Who is the lockdown corner? Who
[27:42] Speaker 1: is the captain of that back end, you think, for
[27:44] Speaker 1: the defense?
[27:45] Speaker 13: Well, at corner, I mean, the most experienced coming back
[27:49] Speaker 13: and the guy that we look at certainly is Dylan Robinson.
[27:52] Speaker 13: But the leader of the secondary, and it's not even close.
[27:56] Speaker 13: It's not even close at all. And this has zero bias.
[27:59] Speaker 13: In fact, it's AMAC. It's Alex McLaughlin. He will be
[28:03] Speaker 13: an all Big Ten player at the end of the year.
[28:06] Speaker 4: He will be, no question. He is the best open
[28:08] Speaker 4: field tackler. He plays in space. the outside if he
[28:14] Speaker 4: needed to.
[28:15] Speaker 13: His communication, his ball hawk awareness, knows.
[28:18] Speaker 4: For the football.
[28:19] Speaker 13: I mean, I can go after superlatives and just keep going.
[28:23] Speaker 13: He is that leader back there. So with that being said,
[28:26] Speaker 13: that means that everything's going to funnel off what defenses
[28:29] Speaker 13: try to attack. They're not going to try to attack middle.
[28:32] Speaker 13: you're going to go after corners. They're going to go
[28:34] Speaker 13: after edges, and then it is run support. So tackling
[28:37] Speaker 13: in the secondary and bringing that pressure up front, I
[28:40] Speaker 13: like our secondary a lot. Although you lose quite a
[28:43] Speaker 13: bit of talent, you're replacing it with some good players.
[28:46] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[28:46] Speaker 1: Well, Cam, before I let you go, and again, Cam
[28:48] Speaker 1: Cleland with us on the Husky Football Preview Podcast presented
[28:51] Speaker 1: by Colburn Law. We've been talking here for about 15 minutes,
[28:54] Speaker 1: and we haven't mentioned the quarterback yet, right?
[28:57] Speaker 2: Number one.
[28:57] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[28:57] Speaker 1: Was number two, now he's wearing Warren Moon's old number one.
[29:01] Speaker 1: And year three in the program, there was so much
[29:03] Speaker 1: hype after that Louisville game and the Sun Bowl maybe
[29:07] Speaker 1: met the hype for some, but I know he did
[29:09] Speaker 1: not meet the hype for himself or Jed because Jed
[29:12] Speaker 1: talked about finishing, finishing games like Michigan, finishing games like Wisconsin.
[29:17] Speaker 1: What is going to be, you think, the biggest difference, hopefully,
[29:20] Speaker 1: in the DeMond Williams that we saw a year ago
[29:22] Speaker 1: versus the one that we see this season?
[29:25] Speaker 13: Well, I think that what I've watched so far a
[29:27] Speaker 13: little bit in practice, and I think his maturity and
[29:30] Speaker 13: his evolution is winning from the pocket. And look, there
[29:35] Speaker 13: are going to be moments when DeMond needs to make
[29:37] Speaker 13: extension of plays and plays.
[29:38] Speaker 4: With his feet.
[29:40] Speaker 13: But every great quarterback in college football, when they know
[29:43] Speaker 13: they have talent on the outside with a good run game,
[29:45] Speaker 13: they have to win.
[29:46] Speaker 4: They have to have vision.
[29:47] Speaker 13: They have to find those gaps and win from the
[29:50] Speaker 13: pocket and distribute the football. If we get into great
[29:54] Speaker 13: football games, which they will be, and we used last
[29:57] Speaker 13: year as a test in the losses of not having
[30:01] Speaker 13: the offensive production because teams found a way to make
[30:04] Speaker 13: sure they didn't let DeMond beat us with his feet,
[30:07] Speaker 13: beat them with their feet, Ohio State, in losses in
[30:10] Speaker 13: those games. He has to distribute the football with great accuracy.
[30:14] Speaker 4: Accuracy.
[30:16] Speaker 13: Okay, high percentage. We need to be in the 70%
[30:19] Speaker 13: completion rate. At that rate, that.
[30:21] Speaker 4: Gives you a high level. Now, does that mean you have.
[30:24] Speaker 13: To have 70% at 18 yards and 20-yard chunk plays? No,
[30:28] Speaker 13: that means the 7-yard throws, the 5-yard throws, the ones
[30:31] Speaker 13: that extend the drive, those high completions move chains, and
[30:36] Speaker 13: he doesn't have to take big hits down the field.
[30:39] Speaker 13: So all those things means maturity and intelligence back there.
[30:42] Speaker 13: And that's one thing you could see that they're working.
[30:45] Speaker 13: And at least when I'm noticing him in practices and
[30:47] Speaker 13: noticing him in these mock games, he's more comfortable in
[30:50] Speaker 13: understanding where to win in the pocket.
[30:51] Speaker 1: All right, Cam, last one for you. We'll let you go.
[30:54] Speaker 1: Appreciate you doing this, man. You and I will be
[30:56] Speaker 1: spending a lot of time together, so I don't want
[30:58] Speaker 1: to annoy you too much before the season starts. There
[31:02] Speaker 1: are some landmines for this team starting maybe October 3rd
[31:06] Speaker 1: at USC. Number 22, Iowa, comes here on a Friday.
[31:10] Speaker 1: Penn State, for the first time since 1921, is coming
[31:14] Speaker 1: to town. And then you end with maybe just about
[31:17] Speaker 1: the two biggest teams in your way for the CFP possibility,
[31:22] Speaker 1: Indiana and Oregon. What do you think about the schedule
[31:26] Speaker 1: and where are the question marks for you in your opinion?
[31:30] Speaker 13: Well, I think the schedule sets up to be a
[31:32] Speaker 13: college football playoff team if you can handle your home games.
[31:35] Speaker 2: Right.
[31:35] Speaker 4: And then your road game situations are.
[31:39] Speaker 4: Are as follows.
[31:41] Speaker 13: You get to week from this is not looking past Minnesota.
[31:44] Speaker 13: It also is going to be a chest test at home.
[31:47] Speaker 13: I mean, that's a big 10, big 10 opener. And
[31:49] Speaker 13: that's that's not a walk in the park either. So
[31:52] Speaker 13: you're getting down to USC. That's your first major road test.
[31:56] Speaker 13: And you're looking at a coach and a player and
[31:57] Speaker 13: a program that are fighting to try to keep his job.
[32:00] Speaker 13: And that's a program that they're in that same situation.
[32:04] Speaker 13: They have a high expectation. So they know that's the
[32:06] Speaker 13: game that USC has circled for them to be a
[32:10] Speaker 13: college football playoff team.
[32:12] Speaker 4: So they know how.
[32:13] Speaker 13: Important that game is. We know how important that is.
[32:15] Speaker 13: You win that football game. I have to have that
[32:18] Speaker 13: as my litmus test, man. That's the mark that I
[32:20] Speaker 13: look at. Handle your business at home, Minnesota. You go
[32:24] Speaker 13: on the road. Not only is that confidence, and now
[32:26] Speaker 13: you're going to have your home set up. Knowing that
[32:29] Speaker 13: you're going to face Iowa at home, that's a heck
[32:31] Speaker 13: of a lot better going on the road there. You've
[32:33] Speaker 13: got to go on the road on another Friday night
[32:35] Speaker 13: to Purdue. But then you're back home, and those games
[32:38] Speaker 13: at home matter a lot. That's a long flight for
[32:41] Speaker 13: Penn State. That's a long flight and a big deal
[32:44] Speaker 13: for Indiana. Tell me the last time Indiana's been to
[32:47] Speaker 13: Husky Stadium.
[32:48] Speaker 4: Yeah, forever.
[32:50] Speaker 2: Before our time.
[32:51] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[32:52] Speaker 4: Not in our time. You know, we weren't breathing. So
[32:54] Speaker 4: this is, it sets up.
[32:56] Speaker 13: And I don't feel like project that what game matters
[32:58] Speaker 13: the most right now. It's you got to win on
[33:00] Speaker 13: the road in those big games and handle your business
[33:02] Speaker 13: at home.
[33:03] Speaker 2: No doubt.
[33:03] Speaker 1: You go three and two on the road and handle
[33:05] Speaker 1: your business at home. As you said, you're a 10
[33:07] Speaker 1: and two football team and likely in the CFP.
[33:10] Speaker 2: So Cam, great stuff, man.
[33:12] Speaker 1: This was a great way to kick off the 2026 season.
[33:17] Speaker 1: Looking forward to it. And we will see you at
[33:19] Speaker 1: the Apple cup very soon, my friend.
[33:22] Speaker 4: Awesome. Appreciate it, brother.
