[0:42] Speaker 3: with us right now talking some baseball.
[0:44] Speaker 2: How are you, pal?
[0:46] Speaker 4: Afternoon, guys. I'm doing well.
[0:48] Speaker 3: You know, Dick and I were talking about 25 years ago,
[0:54] Speaker 3: you guys on September 3rd were 60 games over.
[0:57] Speaker 2: 500. 60 games over. 500. Can you go back.
[1:01] Speaker 4: And just give us... That's a good team right there.
[1:04] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:04] Speaker 3: Give us a little anecdote, story, whatever. Put your old
[1:08] Speaker 3: storytelling hat on about.
[1:10] Speaker 4: What that was like. Uh-oh. It must be going rough.
[1:12] Speaker 4: What was that like?
[1:14] Speaker 2: No, no, no. We're not there yet.
[1:15] Speaker 3: We're not talking for Lou Piniella stories, but if you
[1:17] Speaker 3: want to make a Lou Piniella, that's fine. We might
[1:18] Speaker 3: be a week away from Lou Piniella stories.
[1:19] Speaker 2: We could be. We could be.
[1:21] Speaker 3: So give us a take on what that was like
[1:22] Speaker 3: to wake up 60 games over 500 25 years ago today.
[1:26] Speaker 4: I think it got to a point. We're at this
[1:30] Speaker 4: point in the season where we weren't even counting. We
[1:34] Speaker 4: were just like, we're so far over 500. Everybody is
[1:37] Speaker 4: so in the rear view mirror. I think the Oakland Dodgers,
[1:41] Speaker 4: A's that year won 102 or 104 games. They missed
[1:45] Speaker 4: it by 12 games when you won 100. So at
[1:50] Speaker 4: that stage of the season, it was more the hoopla
[1:53] Speaker 4: and all the things we were paying attention to started
[1:58] Speaker 4: in the first couple months because we won 20 games
[2:00] Speaker 4: back-to-back months. And that's, you know, infamously when Johnny Olerud
[2:06] Speaker 4: came over to me at a during a pitching change.
[2:08] Speaker 4: Cause Lou had had that conversation with us in spring
[2:11] Speaker 4: training that you can't just flip a switch. And he
[2:13] Speaker 4: was being Lou and he was yelling at us and
[2:15] Speaker 4: we were all laughing because we were a veteran team
[2:18] Speaker 4: and he was complaining about spring training. We're playing that good.
[2:21] Speaker 4: And that's when, when Johnny Ola route comes to me
[2:24] Speaker 4: and it's the end of May and we just won
[2:26] Speaker 4: 20 games, two months in a row. And Johnny, he
[2:31] Speaker 4: comes up with some great ones. I said, Johnny, what
[2:33] Speaker 4: do you got for me today? And he just turned
[2:35] Speaker 4: to me and he said, you know, I guess we
[2:38] Speaker 4: could tell Lou, consider that switch flip. And it just,
[2:42] Speaker 4: it went from there. And I mean, we just, we
[2:44] Speaker 4: just had something about us, an aura. It was the
[2:47] Speaker 4: refuse to lose year and two outs. So what? And
[2:52] Speaker 4: we really felt like that. It was, it was something
[2:54] Speaker 4: that I've never gone through before. It was a, it
[2:57] Speaker 4: was something that was, you know, I don't want to
[2:59] Speaker 4: get woo woo, but it was magical. It was something that,
[3:02] Speaker 4: and we all knew that we all knew. This is
[3:06] Speaker 4: a once-in-a-lifetime thing. You just don't have seasons that go
[3:10] Speaker 4: this smoothly, this easy. I don't think one of our
[3:13] Speaker 4: starters missed a start in the starting rotation. Everybody was
[3:17] Speaker 4: pretty much healthy for the entire year. Everybody was having
[3:20] Speaker 4: career years at the same time, and we would just
[3:23] Speaker 4: win series after series, and we didn't think about it.
[3:25] Speaker 4: It was just, okay, we're going to win, obviously. It
[3:29] Speaker 4: was a matter of, are we going to beat you
[3:31] Speaker 4: in the series, or are we just going to beat you,
[3:33] Speaker 4: or are we going to sweep you? And we didn't
[3:36] Speaker 4: get into the 60 games over 500. We weren't sitting
[3:39] Speaker 4: around looking, you know, talking about what we were doing.
[3:42] Speaker 4: We were just kind of head down, lunch pail, going
[3:45] Speaker 4: to work. I think it was a relief when we
[3:49] Speaker 4: hit the 116. It was like, oh, finally it's over.
[3:52] Speaker 4: And now we had to start the playoffs. So great
[3:55] Speaker 4: memories ended badly. Shamefully, it didn't end the way we
[4:00] Speaker 4: wanted it to do. But it was definitely one of
[4:03] Speaker 4: those seasons where you just can't wait to get ballpark
[4:05] Speaker 4: every day and very rarely at that level do you
[4:08] Speaker 4: have those years where you just can't wait to get
[4:11] Speaker 4: to the ballpark and everybody was similar it's like let's
[4:14] Speaker 4: get to the yard so we can beat someone's butt
[4:17] Speaker 4: and uh never have i been through a season like
[4:19] Speaker 4: that you have peaks and valleys you have peaks where
[4:22] Speaker 4: wow it's really fun right now we just rattled off
[4:24] Speaker 4: 10 of 12 but never from from wire to wire.
[4:28] Speaker 5: Is that what motivated you in the last couple weeks
[4:30] Speaker 5: the 116 because other than that you weren't.
[4:32] Speaker 4: I think so anything in september Yeah, I think so.
[4:36] Speaker 4: You know, Lou is coming under a lot of heat
[4:38] Speaker 4: for not resting guys. He was kind of it was
[4:41] Speaker 4: a catch 22 for our skipper because he wanted to
[4:44] Speaker 4: rest guys, get them ready for the postseason. The lead
[4:47] Speaker 4: was so big that it didn't matter if we won
[4:49] Speaker 4: or lost the game. But I think he felt that
[4:51] Speaker 4: pressure like, well, we're here. We might as well break
[4:55] Speaker 4: the record if we can. So he kind of we
[4:58] Speaker 4: kept the pedal to the metal the whole season. There's
[5:00] Speaker 4: no excuse. I mean, people speculate, say, oh, should Lou
[5:05] Speaker 4: have rested more people? No. What happened, happened. And it
[5:08] Speaker 4: didn't matter. It wasn't for lack of rest or anything
[5:12] Speaker 4: like that or chasing the record. It was kind of
[5:16] Speaker 4: exciting because it was the first year of Ichiro. So
[5:19] Speaker 4: he had his whole entourage from Japan. You had all
[5:21] Speaker 4: the Japanese media, which we weren't used to having that
[5:24] Speaker 4: many extra media in the clubhouse. Then once we got
[5:27] Speaker 4: on this record pace, we had that post-season type media,
[5:31] Speaker 4: every game, everywhere we went, because it was a national story.
[5:35] Speaker 4: And the questions started to come around the All-Star break.
[5:39] Speaker 4: They started questioning, are you going to win 116? And
[5:42] Speaker 4: we had to answer those questions for two months. And
[5:44] Speaker 4: then finally we did it. And it was like, wow.
[5:47] Speaker 4: It was a big relief. I remember that night, just
[5:49] Speaker 4: finally it's over. They're going to quit asking us about
[5:52] Speaker 4: that question, and we're going to move on. But we
[5:54] Speaker 4: went to the playoffs, and we got beat by New York.
[5:58] Speaker 4: Still to this day, I don't know how. Because during
[6:00] Speaker 4: the season, we handled New York very easily. And going
[6:02] Speaker 4: into that series, we didn't even think twice whether we
[6:05] Speaker 4: were going to win or not. Usually in the postseason,
[6:08] Speaker 4: you're kind of walking on eggshells and, all right, we've
[6:10] Speaker 4: got to play well and we've got to get this
[6:11] Speaker 4: series going. But that particular year, we're just going to
[6:15] Speaker 4: roll into New York and take care of business like
[6:17] Speaker 4: we always have and kind of got blindsided and lost.
[6:20] Speaker 3: Yeah, well, yeah, you know seven-game series, anything is possible. Well,
[6:23] Speaker 3: let's talk about this team, and Astros won today, so
[6:26] Speaker 3: you're five and a half games out. We were just
[6:28] Speaker 3: doing some math here, so the Astros have 21 games
[6:31] Speaker 3: left to go, and Dick and I just for giggles
[6:33] Speaker 3: just said, okay, the most likely scenario, let's just say 11-10.
[6:37] Speaker 3: Maybe 10 and 11, but we'll just say 500. They
[6:39] Speaker 3: go 11 and 10. The M's have to go 17
[6:41] Speaker 3: and 5 in their last 22 games to catch them
[6:45] Speaker 3: and tie them and win the American League West. That's
[6:48] Speaker 3: 125 win pace, by the way, guys, over the final
[6:50] Speaker 3: 22 games. I mean, honestly, for lack of a better question,
[6:56] Speaker 3: you think they can do that?
[6:59] Speaker 4: Well, realistically... writing on the wall? No, I'm not going
[7:02] Speaker 4: to sit here and be a super fan and say,
[7:04] Speaker 4: of course they can do it. Yeah, anything's possible. What
[7:08] Speaker 4: matters is what those players in that clubhouse think. That's
[7:10] Speaker 4: all that matters, is do they think they can? And
[7:13] Speaker 4: I would assume they do think they can because of
[7:15] Speaker 4: the personnel they have there. The problem is Seattle, we
[7:20] Speaker 4: were talking about a few weeks ago, they were going
[7:22] Speaker 4: through a real rough streak where they were having to
[7:24] Speaker 4: play some good teams back to back. Well, we've hit
[7:28] Speaker 4: that the point in the season where it's flipped and
[7:31] Speaker 4: they have the easiest schedule. So that's the positive thing
[7:34] Speaker 4: on the way out. You know, start tonight with the A's.
[7:36] Speaker 4: You can't take anybody for granted. That being said, you
[7:39] Speaker 4: do have the easiest schedule. Texas, I think, in that
[7:41] Speaker 4: division have kind of the middle schedule. And then Houston's
[7:44] Speaker 4: got the toughest down the stretch. So if you're going
[7:46] Speaker 4: to look for positives, the Astros have the toughest run
[7:49] Speaker 4: through the month of September. Seattle has the easiest if
[7:52] Speaker 4: you're looking for positive things to look for. But they're still,
[7:55] Speaker 4: you know, they're teams now that– The athletics, they're looking
[7:59] Speaker 4: to knock somebody off. They have nothing to play for
[8:01] Speaker 4: this season. You've got to find something to play for.
[8:03] Speaker 4: So those teams that have no chance at the playoffs,
[8:06] Speaker 4: they've got to find a reason to play. And nothing
[8:08] Speaker 4: better than just crushing somebody's dream right there on the
[8:12] Speaker 4: cusp of trying to get a playoff bid.
[8:15] Speaker 5: Well, you used the term flip a switch when you
[8:17] Speaker 5: were talking about 2021. I mean, that seems like Dan
[8:20] Speaker 5: Wilson's M.O. I mean, he flipped a switch in 2024
[8:24] Speaker 5: when he got here in September. They flipped the switch
[8:28] Speaker 5: and went 17-1 last year down the stretch. Can he
[8:30] Speaker 5: flip a switch? It looked like they flipped the switch
[8:32] Speaker 5: in Boston. They had a good series in Boston. So,
[8:35] Speaker 5: I mean, is it possible for him to just be
[8:37] Speaker 5: that type of manager that can flip the switch when
[8:39] Speaker 5: the season gets late?
[8:43] Speaker 4: Once again, I'd love to sit there and say absolutely.
[8:46] Speaker 4: But I don't know anybody that can just flip the
[8:49] Speaker 4: switch when they need to. That doesn't have a bat
[8:51] Speaker 4: or a glove in their hand. That can affect you
[8:54] Speaker 4: on the field.
[8:56] Speaker 2: You're right.
[8:56] Speaker 4: They beat a good Red Sox team. They beat them
[8:58] Speaker 4: two out of three. Coming off a sweep from Toronto,
[9:01] Speaker 4: you can't get swept by Toronto. I know Toronto's playing
[9:03] Speaker 4: better now. I think they've won five out of six,
[9:05] Speaker 4: but you can't at this stage of the season with
[9:08] Speaker 4: everything on the line, you just can't lose three straight.
[9:11] Speaker 4: You followed up with, no, you went two out of
[9:14] Speaker 4: three and now it's a headache. At this stage, you
[9:17] Speaker 4: just got to go into series and you can't think
[9:18] Speaker 4: about sweeps. At the end, you got to think, okay,
[9:21] Speaker 4: now we got to sweep if the numbers work out
[9:23] Speaker 4: that way. But right now, I think you take small
[9:26] Speaker 4: samples and just say, no, we got to win tonight. But,
[9:29] Speaker 4: but if you want to go a little longer term,
[9:31] Speaker 4: we've got to win every series from here on out.
[9:34] Speaker 4: They've got Texas coming up after, after the A's. Okay.
[9:39] Speaker 4: For years and years have, have they've had Texas's number. Well,
[9:43] Speaker 4: this year they've, they've talked about flipping the switch or
[9:46] Speaker 4: flipping the script, uh, Texas has kind of flipped it
[9:50] Speaker 4: on Seattle this year and has had their number. And
[9:52] Speaker 4: last year, coming out of there, I think I told
[9:54] Speaker 4: this on the program a few weeks ago. Man, I
[9:57] Speaker 4: left Seattle last year when we were in a playoff hunt.
[9:59] Speaker 4: we're in that wild card hunt and I left Seattle
[10:02] Speaker 4: and and we played them twice and I just thought
[10:05] Speaker 4: to myself I don't want to play that team in
[10:07] Speaker 4: the first round of the playoffs they have our number
[10:10] Speaker 4: and and there's certain teams throughout the course of the
[10:11] Speaker 4: season that that do that to you last year seattle
[10:15] Speaker 4: was our nemesis texas this year has kind of flipped
[10:18] Speaker 4: it on them and and seattle's had a real tough
[10:20] Speaker 4: time but texas is beat up their starting rotations beat
[10:23] Speaker 4: up a little bit you got them coming in next
[10:25] Speaker 4: but i don't think you get ahead of this this
[10:27] Speaker 4: oakland uh or i'm sorry this this athletics yeah team
[10:31] Speaker 4: who has really had a tough long run but anything's
[10:36] Speaker 4: possible and just when you think oh the a's are
[10:38] Speaker 4: in town we're going to kind of just steamroll them,
[10:41] Speaker 4: that's when you find yourself losing two out of three.
[10:43] Speaker 4: So you can't keep your guard down right now. You've
[10:45] Speaker 4: got to win every series. And then, like I said,
[10:47] Speaker 4: you get to the end, you see where you're at,
[10:49] Speaker 4: you see where the number's at, then it's like sweep
[10:51] Speaker 4: or we're not going anywhere. So one thing at a time.
[10:53] Speaker 3: We had, Dick, was it in Boston this last weekend
[10:57] Speaker 3: when Bazzardo had that brain fart at home plate?
[10:59] Speaker 2: Was that last weekend?
[11:00] Speaker 4: Yes.
[11:01] Speaker 2: Okay, so Brett.
[11:02] Speaker 4: No, that was Toronto. That was Toronto.
[11:04] Speaker 2: Okay, but you haven't been on with us, I think,
[11:05] Speaker 2: since that happened.
[11:07] Speaker 3: And so my whole deal was this, and I get
[11:10] Speaker 3: that it takes a certain kind of personality. I just think, Brett,
[11:13] Speaker 3: that there's been numerous occasions where Dan Wilson could have
[11:17] Speaker 3: exercised a little bit of muscle uh shown some leadership
[11:21] Speaker 3: yanked the guy out of a game benched the guy
[11:23] Speaker 3: the next day for a brain fart lack of focus
[11:26] Speaker 3: whatever and he's not doing it and and i don't
[11:28] Speaker 3: think you need to be some unbelievable you know hard
[11:32] Speaker 3: ass to do something like that you pull a guy
[11:34] Speaker 3: aside and just say look i love you but we
[11:36] Speaker 3: got to pull you out of the game we can't
[11:37] Speaker 3: have this and he's refuses to do.
[11:40] Speaker 4: It why well but but soft let's look at the
[11:44] Speaker 4: the some of the scenarios you're talking about you the
[11:48] Speaker 4: two things that stick out to me this week are
[11:50] Speaker 4: the Bizarro play at home play.
[11:51] Speaker 2: Right.
[11:52] Speaker 4: And then I look at the Julio play in center field.
[11:54] Speaker 2: Right.
[11:54] Speaker 4: Neither one of a Bizarro busted his butt to get
[11:57] Speaker 4: to the plate to cover. Now it's one thing if
[12:00] Speaker 4: he doesn't cover and he's kind of licking his wounds, like, well,
[12:03] Speaker 4: it was me. It doesn't cover. That's a lack of effort.
[12:05] Speaker 4: The fact is he busted it to home plate, got
[12:08] Speaker 4: in position, but for whatever reason, just was unassuming. Like, Oh,
[12:13] Speaker 4: you don't think somebody's coming down the line. I mean,
[12:16] Speaker 4: I've been in a million tag situations right there. I
[12:18] Speaker 4: can feel the runner coming in. I don't know what
[12:21] Speaker 4: he was thinking. Raleigh got the ball to him plenty
[12:24] Speaker 4: of time. If he just turns to make a quick tag,
[12:26] Speaker 4: he's there. It probably gets the out. It's one of
[12:29] Speaker 4: those unexplained things, and it wasn't a lack of effort like, oh,
[12:33] Speaker 4: he's out there sowing his oats.
[12:35] Speaker 3: Same thing with the Julio. Let me stop you for
[12:38] Speaker 3: a second. Let's just get those two examples out. There
[12:41] Speaker 3: are numerous examples you know as well as me.
[12:44] Speaker 2: All right. Of other situations this year.
[12:46] Speaker 1: Correct.
[12:46] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[12:47] Speaker 3: Where you've had brain farts by these guys. Those two,
[12:50] Speaker 3: you want to defend them. That's totally fine. I'm talking
[12:52] Speaker 3: about overall.
[12:52] Speaker 4: Right.
[12:53] Speaker 2: The view from 50,000. Right.
[12:55] Speaker 4: Why?
[12:56] Speaker 2: Why is he like that?
[12:58] Speaker 4: I look at teams like this. I've watched a lot
[13:00] Speaker 4: of games all across the schedule. And I was having
[13:06] Speaker 4: a conversation. This Brewers team, this Tampa Bay Rays team,
[13:10] Speaker 4: the way they play baseball. the culture that's been created there,
[13:14] Speaker 4: the culture that starts in the minor leagues. You'll notice
[13:17] Speaker 4: they have very few problems. The other day, the skipper
[13:20] Speaker 4: for the Brewers took out one of his players for
[13:22] Speaker 4: lack of hustle. It was accepted. The team as a
[13:26] Speaker 4: whole accepted it. There was no backlash from the players
[13:30] Speaker 4: because they know it's expected. That starts in the minor league.
[13:34] Speaker 4: That starts as an organization. Now, if you don't have
[13:37] Speaker 4: that culture already in stone in your organization, Just because
[13:43] Speaker 4: it's panic time and it's late August and it's early September,
[13:46] Speaker 4: you can't start going against everything that was accepted before,
[13:50] Speaker 4: if that makes sense. I watch this Milwaukee team. I
[13:52] Speaker 4: watch this Tampa Bay. There's a certain level that's expected
[13:56] Speaker 4: on how you go about your business, how you play
[13:58] Speaker 4: the game. And that's been entrenched. And I don't know
[14:02] Speaker 4: if that's the manager. I don't know if that's the GM.
[14:04] Speaker 4: I don't know if that's the minor league system. But
[14:06] Speaker 4: there is a culture, and it's very noticeable, how they
[14:08] Speaker 4: play baseball different than the other teams. They've got a
[14:11] Speaker 4: few stars sprinkled in on those two teams, but they
[14:15] Speaker 4: don't have a ton of stars on those two rosters.
[14:17] Speaker 4: They just play the game right. They come to the
[14:19] Speaker 4: ballpark and expect to kick your butt. And they worry
[14:22] Speaker 4: about winning a game. They don't worry about individual getting hits.
[14:24] Speaker 4: Of course we want our individual stats. That's how we
[14:26] Speaker 4: get paid. But they worry about playing the game to
[14:29] Speaker 4: win that game that particular night. That is a culture.
[14:33] Speaker 4: And if you're in Seattle and that hasn't been the
[14:34] Speaker 4: way it's been, and this is not how you've treated
[14:37] Speaker 4: your players consistently, all of a sudden, because it's September,
[14:41] Speaker 4: And you start pulling the guys out of the game,
[14:44] Speaker 4: and now I'm going to be this disciplinary. Players see
[14:48] Speaker 4: right through that, and they'll laugh at you. And they
[14:50] Speaker 4: won't buy in, and you'll have almost like the other
[14:54] Speaker 4: side will turn on you because it's not established. Does
[14:58] Speaker 4: that make sense?
[15:00] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I guess.
[15:01] Speaker 4: I just think he– And I think at this stage
[15:04] Speaker 4: of the game, if Danny were to come out and
[15:06] Speaker 4: just say, you're going to be disciplined.
[15:08] Speaker 2: Well, that would be ridiculous. I agree with that. Right.
[15:11] Speaker 4: Exactly. He's not going to have any credibility if he
[15:15] Speaker 4: does that.
[15:16] Speaker 2: Totally agree. That ship is set.
[15:18] Speaker 5: But how about a red-ass session in a closed-door office?
[15:23] Speaker 5: Does he do that?
[15:24] Speaker 4: Or is he just as nice to his players.
[15:27] Speaker 5: As he is in the postgame when he never says anything.
[15:30] Speaker 4: That his players do wrong?
[15:32] Speaker 2: And all he ever says is, tough one tonight.
[15:38] Speaker 4: Right. And things, especially in the media to the fans
[15:42] Speaker 4: that watch, you start getting irritated with the little things.
[15:45] Speaker 4: Danny is Danny, and I love Danny, but he's not
[15:49] Speaker 4: going to change. And once again, the most important thing
[15:52] Speaker 4: in that clubhouse is players. They see everything. You can't
[15:55] Speaker 4: get anything by a player. They see and hear everything.
[16:00] Speaker 4: If Danny goes out and goes out on a limb
[16:03] Speaker 4: and pulls the, Lou Piniella personality, it's not going to
[16:08] Speaker 4: bode well. They're not going to buy it. So everything's
[16:12] Speaker 4: got to be organic. Everything's got to be very legitimate
[16:16] Speaker 4: and for real. You can't go in there and be
[16:18] Speaker 4: somebody else. You are who you are. You manage how
[16:21] Speaker 4: you manage. And when things get tough, that's just not
[16:25] Speaker 4: Danny's way of conducting business. And it wouldn't fly in
[16:30] Speaker 4: that clubhouse.
[16:31] Speaker 2: Well, I think you're right now.
[16:32] Speaker 3: I think you're 1,000% right that if he did it now,
[16:34] Speaker 3: they'd just laugh at him, right? I mean, that day
[16:37] Speaker 3: has come and gone. He should have established that from
[16:40] Speaker 3: the start when he took over in August of 2024
[16:42] Speaker 3: when they fired Scott Service, or at least maybe go
[16:46] Speaker 3: into 25 with that.
[16:47] Speaker 2: Kind of an attitude.
[16:47] Speaker 4: Well, but look at this, though. Look at this scenario. Okay,
[16:50] Speaker 4: Danny takes over. They have a lot of success. Then
[16:53] Speaker 4: a year later, last year, they had one of the
[16:56] Speaker 4: best runs ever. In the last 20 years of the
[17:01] Speaker 4: Seattle Mariner team, and we're a few outs away from
[17:04] Speaker 4: going to the World Series. So all of a sudden,
[17:07] Speaker 4: you know, everybody's liking Danny. He's doing a pretty darn
[17:09] Speaker 4: good job. He's thinking, you know, my way is working.
[17:12] Speaker 4: So all of a sudden, you're going to come to
[17:14] Speaker 4: spring training at 26. Who could have saw this coming
[17:16] Speaker 4: with that roster? All of a sudden, you're going to
[17:18] Speaker 4: be a different guy. I don't think that's really feasible
[17:21] Speaker 4: because for a year and a half, it really worked.
[17:24] Speaker 4: And all of a sudden, it's not working. So we're
[17:26] Speaker 4: going to nitpick, and we're going to pick on every
[17:27] Speaker 4: little thing. danny's danny he's not going to be somebody
[17:30] Speaker 4: else and as much as everybody when things go bad
[17:33] Speaker 4: you want to turn over the you know you want
[17:35] Speaker 4: to turn over the lunch table and do that you've
[17:38] Speaker 4: got to have the right personality to be able to do.
[17:39] Speaker 3: That yeah i agree with that i think you need
[17:42] Speaker 3: to be able to adjust uh as the situation calls
[17:44] Speaker 3: for it and he wasn't able to adjust when he
[17:47] Speaker 3: needed to be maybe a little bit tougher on his
[17:49] Speaker 3: guys uh just doesn't have it in him uh you're
[17:51] Speaker 3: exactly right danny's danny For sure.
[17:53] Speaker 2: All right. Booney's Booney. Brett, great stuff. And we will
[17:57] Speaker 2: talk in a week. All right, man. See you. Thanks, man.
[18:00] Speaker 2: You got it.
[18:01] Speaker 4: Thank you.
[18:01] Speaker 2: All right. Brett Boone with us on the radio show.
[18:03] Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's one of the most frustrating
[18:05] Speaker 3: things about this year, Dick, is that, you know, hey, look,
[18:07] Speaker 3: there's a lot of great reasons to be a player's manager.
[18:11] Speaker 3: A lot of great reasons to have a guy's back
[18:13] Speaker 3: and be supportive. There's also a lot of great reasons
[18:16] Speaker 3: for tough love. I mean, you're a parent, right? You
[18:18] Speaker 3: love your kids to death, but when you need to
[18:20] Speaker 3: be tough on them, you're tough on them. And you've
[18:22] Speaker 3: got to have every tool in your toolbox, right, to
[18:24] Speaker 3: raise your kids the right way. And it seems like
[18:26] Speaker 3: he's lacking in tools.
[18:27] Speaker 5: And I've always been like that as both a parent
[18:29] Speaker 5: and a coach. I give you the rope to hang yourself.
[18:33] Speaker 5: And I warn you, and I warn you calmly, and
[18:35] Speaker 5: I continue to be calm and calm and calm. And
[18:38] Speaker 5: at some point, the calmness ends. and they listen to
[18:44] Speaker 5: it because it doesn't happen often. If somebody's a yeller
[18:47] Speaker 5: all the time, they tune you out. But if somebody's
[18:50] Speaker 5: calm 90% of the time and then gets on your ass,
[18:56] Speaker 5: that's when they listen to you, both kids and the
[18:59] Speaker 5: people that I've coached before.
[19:00] Speaker 3: I just wonder if he would have established that early
[19:02] Speaker 3: in the year to say, look, guys, I love you,
[19:03] Speaker 3: and last year was great, but we've got to do
[19:05] Speaker 3: this differently now because we're not getting the results we need.
[19:07] Speaker 2: Julio, I love you. Come over here.
[19:08] Speaker 3: I'm going to put my arm around you. I've got
[19:10] Speaker 3: to bench you for tomorrow. And the team will be
[19:12] Speaker 3: better off for it. You'll be better off for it,
[19:13] Speaker 3: and the team will be better off for it. I
[19:15] Speaker 3: thought the stuff with Pat Murphy and Cooper Pratt, there
[19:18] Speaker 3: was a lot of debate whether or not he should
[19:20] Speaker 3: have pulled him out of a game.
[19:21] Speaker 2: That's fine.
[19:22] Speaker 3: But Cooper Pratt's response to it is exactly what I
[19:25] Speaker 3: would have loved to have heard a player say if
[19:28] Speaker 3: Dan Wilson yanked somebody out of a game.
[19:30] Speaker 2: He said, hey, I get it. You know, I get it.
[19:32] Speaker 5: And I didn't think Pratt loafed as much as I've
[19:34] Speaker 5: seen Mariners loaf.
[19:35] Speaker 3: A thousand percent. All right, we're going to break. A
[19:37] Speaker 3: lot more to get to. Jerry Brewer at 5. We'll
[19:40] Speaker 3: do some testimonials at 545 tonight. May head across the
[19:44] Speaker 3: street to the ballpark as well. Lots to get to
[19:46] Speaker 3: between now and 7 on 93.3 KJR FM.
