[0:52] Speaker 4: nailing North Carolina and the points. They won outright, outright.
[0:57] Speaker 4: Over TCU and Ireland last Saturday. We'll see what he
[1:01] Speaker 4: can come up with and try to make it 2-0.
[1:03] Speaker 4: But I've got John, I've got you at 26-5 in
[1:07] Speaker 4: your last 31 picks on the year, going back to
[1:10] Speaker 4: the end of the 2024 season. So that means one
[1:14] Speaker 4: of two things are going to happen. Either A, you're
[1:17] Speaker 4: going to continue this ridiculous hot streak, or B, you're
[1:21] Speaker 4: about to totally crash and burn and fall off the
[1:24] Speaker 4: face of the earth and explode on the air this
[1:28] Speaker 4: season the rest of the way.
[1:29] Speaker 3: So what's it going to be, big boy?
[1:31] Speaker 5: Well, I would say explosion is coming. But you never know.
[1:37] Speaker 5: I hope somebody's benefited. I certainly haven't.
[1:39] Speaker 4: Well, you should be benefiting. I told you last year,
[1:42] Speaker 4: you're in the wrong business. I mean, nobody really cares
[1:44] Speaker 4: to read your columns.
[1:45] Speaker 3: You should be.
[1:46] Speaker 5: Handicapping, man.
[1:46] Speaker 4: You should be making money in Vegas, for God's sakes.
[1:51] Speaker 4: There's a lot to go over. Let's just start with
[1:53] Speaker 4: the Apple Cup on Sunday. I don't know if you
[1:55] Speaker 4: heard about the latest. I don't know if it's a controversy, Dick,
[1:58] Speaker 4: but the latest little snafu, I guess, is that Cougar
[2:01] Speaker 4: Marching Band is not coming to the game. What year
[2:05] Speaker 4: did the Husky Band have their accident? Was it 2019, 2018,
[2:07] Speaker 4: whatever year it was? Outside of that year, the Husky
[2:13] Speaker 4: and Cougar bands have been at every single Apple Cup
[2:16] Speaker 4: in my lifetime, and they're not coming this year because
[2:19] Speaker 4: they're pissed off. that UW did not give them good
[2:22] Speaker 4: enough free tickets for the game on Sunday. So they're
[2:25] Speaker 4: taking their tubas and they're going home.
[2:27] Speaker 3: How about that?
[2:27] Speaker 5: A little spice to the rivalry. My understanding is that
[2:35] Speaker 5: Washington State has been offered, the band has been offered
[2:38] Speaker 5: the exact same seats that Oregon's band receives in Husky
[2:42] Speaker 5: Stadium or any other opposing team's band receives. So, It
[2:46] Speaker 5: may be different than it's been in the past, but
[2:49] Speaker 5: I don't sense that Washington State is getting treated any
[2:53] Speaker 5: differently than any other UW opponent.
[2:56] Speaker 2: Right.
[2:56] Speaker 3: They're just whining.
[2:58] Speaker 6: Whining to whine, I guess. John, what's the game going
[3:03] Speaker 6: to look like, in your opinion? You've done some research
[3:05] Speaker 6: on the Cougs. You've done some research on the Dawgs.
[3:08] Speaker 6: What are we going to see on Sunday?
[3:11] Speaker 5: Oh, boy, I don't know that it's going to be
[3:13] Speaker 5: real competitive. I just, you know, I'd love to see
[3:16] Speaker 5: a game like two years ago goes down to the
[3:19] Speaker 5: last couple minutes. You know, I'm always in favor of
[3:22] Speaker 5: exciting games. But, man, I don't know. I was looking.
[3:27] Speaker 5: Washington's offensive line outweighs Washington State's defensive front by 50
[3:31] Speaker 5: pounds a man. I believe it's 322 pounds on average
[3:36] Speaker 5: for the UW line and, like, what, 270-something? for Washington
[3:42] Speaker 5: State's defensive front. I just don't know that the Cougars
[3:46] Speaker 5: are going to be able to hold up. Now, if
[3:48] Speaker 5: Washington gets a little pass happy, that could offset the advantage.
[3:51] Speaker 5: But if I'm the dogs, man, I would just pound
[3:54] Speaker 5: the thing until Washington State stops it and wear them
[3:56] Speaker 5: down and just dominate the ball.
[3:59] Speaker 4: Yeah, I saw where they had the third heaviest offensive
[4:02] Speaker 4: line in college football. That's what Twitter says, so who
[4:05] Speaker 4: knows if that's true or not. The ninth heaviest offensive
[4:07] Speaker 4: line in college football. But I know that since we
[4:10] Speaker 4: last spoke, maybe you've been kind of digging around a
[4:12] Speaker 4: little bit on the series and keeping this thing going.
[4:15] Speaker 3: It's funny, I was talking to.
[4:16] Speaker 4: greg bell this morning on his show that every time
[4:18] Speaker 4: pat chun or jed fish talk about the apple cup
[4:20] Speaker 4: they talk about how they want it to continue but
[4:23] Speaker 4: dot dot dot we want to continue but scheduling may
[4:27] Speaker 4: not be in our control we want it to continue
[4:31] Speaker 4: but we have to do financially what's best for udub
[4:33] Speaker 4: so as it sits right now is it possible that
[4:37] Speaker 4: this is one of the final three apple cups that
[4:40] Speaker 4: we'll see for a while do you believe.
[4:41] Speaker 5: That Yeah, no, I think there's a chance of that. And,
[4:44] Speaker 5: you know, Washington State says the same thing. I talked
[4:47] Speaker 5: to their athletic director, John Harlow, a few weeks ago,
[4:49] Speaker 5: and he kind of said, you know, I talked to Pat.
[4:53] Speaker 5: We understand the importance of the game in the state,
[4:57] Speaker 5: but dot, dot, dot. You know, we've got to stay flexible.
[5:00] Speaker 5: You know, from their standpoint, a lot of the calculation
[5:03] Speaker 5: is the Pac-12 trying to figure out the best strategy,
[5:07] Speaker 5: scheduling strategy to get that group of six bid in
[5:10] Speaker 5: the playoff. Washington has got a lot of things to consider, right?
[5:15] Speaker 5: The budget, seven home games, the limited flexibility. If you
[5:19] Speaker 5: commit to the home-and-home series with Washington State, you really
[5:22] Speaker 5: can't play a home-and-home series with anybody else. If the
[5:27] Speaker 5: playoff expands to 24, are the Big Ten and SEC
[5:30] Speaker 5: going to try to do a crossover series that would
[5:32] Speaker 5: commit Washington to play in Florida one year and Arkansas
[5:36] Speaker 5: the next? And how would that work with the Apple Cup?
[5:39] Speaker 5: It's very complicated now. And I think that there's, I
[5:42] Speaker 5: don't know that it's better than 50-50, but I certainly
[5:45] Speaker 5: think there's a decent chance that once we get through
[5:47] Speaker 5: the game in 28, that might be it for some
[5:52] Speaker 5: period of time.
[5:54] Speaker 6: We heard both Jed Fish yesterday in person at Husky
[5:57] Speaker 6: Stadium and Pat Chun on the Husky show last night
[6:02] Speaker 6: both say that the schedule might not be in our control. Now,
[6:06] Speaker 6: do you think they mean one non-conference game not being
[6:10] Speaker 6: under their control because it's a potential crossover with the SEC?
[6:13] Speaker 6: Or do you think there'll be a time where the
[6:15] Speaker 6: Big Ten controls all the team's non-conference schedules?
[6:20] Speaker 5: I think that we could get to that point. I
[6:23] Speaker 5: have not heard that there is anything imminent on that front,
[6:28] Speaker 5: but certainly if there's a crossover series with the SEC
[6:34] Speaker 5: or if the Big Ten implements a requirement that you
[6:38] Speaker 5: have to play 10 P4 teams, the ACC, SEC, and
[6:42] Speaker 5: Big 12 all have that. The Big Ten does not.
[6:46] Speaker 5: If the Big Ten implements that, then, again, Washington is
[6:50] Speaker 5: going to have to find a way to make that
[6:53] Speaker 5: work with the need to have seven home games for
[6:57] Speaker 5: the budget. So I think that that might be what
[7:00] Speaker 5: they're referring to at this point. But, you know, eventually...
[7:04] Speaker 5: We have no idea what scheduling is going to look
[7:06] Speaker 5: like five, seven years out in terms of how much
[7:10] Speaker 5: control the schools have and how much control the conferences have.
[7:13] Speaker 3: Yeah, well, John Wilner is with us. John, I know
[7:16] Speaker 3: you did.
[7:16] Speaker 4: Maybe you were there at the USC San Jose State
[7:19] Speaker 4: game at the Coliseum over the weekend. The crowd obviously
[7:22] Speaker 4: looked terrible in the Coliseum, and it was hot down there,
[7:24] Speaker 4: and we're getting games that are getting played earlier and
[7:26] Speaker 4: earlier into August every single season, but USC put a
[7:30] Speaker 4: statement out about it.
[7:31] Speaker 3: They got ripped by Paul Feinbaum and others for that.
[7:35] Speaker 4: What was your kind of reaction to the reaction to
[7:37] Speaker 4: the horrible crowd that USC had on Saturday?
[7:40] Speaker 5: I can't believe it was such a story. I really don't.
[7:46] Speaker 5: I've been watching USC games, going to USC games, watching
[7:49] Speaker 5: USC games for a long time. And if you had
[7:53] Speaker 5: told me they're playing San Jose State in August... and
[7:57] Speaker 5: this is the replacement game for Notre Dame. I mean,
[8:00] Speaker 5: USC told its fans, we're not going to play Notre
[8:02] Speaker 5: Dame this year. We're playing San Jose state instead. And
[8:05] Speaker 5: it's a hundred degrees. I would have said there's going
[8:07] Speaker 5: to be 20,000 people in that stadium. You know, that
[8:09] Speaker 5: was a no brainer. So I was not surprised at all.
[8:13] Speaker 5: And I'm just mystified that it has become such a story.
[8:16] Speaker 5: I think USC did add to it by putting the
[8:18] Speaker 5: statement out, you know, Stanford was also empty. Stanford stadium
[8:23] Speaker 5: has been empty for years, but, I just think it's
[8:26] Speaker 5: a little bit much ado about nothing that they're going
[8:28] Speaker 5: to have a 70, 80,000 people in the Coliseum for
[8:32] Speaker 5: big 10 games.
[8:34] Speaker 6: What's your wild idea of starting college football in mid August, John,
[8:38] Speaker 6: even earlier than we do now.
[8:40] Speaker 5: Yeah. Even earlier. I think we college football needs to
[8:43] Speaker 5: start playing on what is week negative one. So basically
[8:48] Speaker 5: two Saturdays ago, it is, there is no competition other
[8:53] Speaker 5: than NFL exhibition games and, And it is wide open
[8:58] Speaker 5: territory for the sport to move its schedule up. That
[9:03] Speaker 5: would allow it to do, one, finish the championship game
[9:07] Speaker 5: in early January, which I think is what everybody wants.
[9:11] Speaker 5: Because if you start on week negative one, you can
[9:14] Speaker 5: play your regular season finales, Thanksgiving weekend, with the buys,
[9:20] Speaker 5: and that solves everything. the calendar problem. The other issue
[9:24] Speaker 5: that nobody's talking about is the NFL is going to
[9:27] Speaker 5: go to that 18th game. Now, I don't know if
[9:29] Speaker 5: it's going to be in two years or at the next.
[9:32] Speaker 5: uh cba with the players the nfl is going to
[9:35] Speaker 5: go to the 18th game and everybody in college football
[9:37] Speaker 5: who's following that thinks that they're going to put that
[9:40] Speaker 5: game on labor day weekend which would mean that what
[9:43] Speaker 5: is currently a wide open weekend for college football is
[9:48] Speaker 5: going to get eaten up by the nfl right so
[9:49] Speaker 5: if you want to stay out from under the nfl
[9:52] Speaker 5: you start a little bit earlier.
[9:54] Speaker 4: Why did ucla wait until like a week before the
[9:57] Speaker 4: season starts to fire their ad.
[10:00] Speaker 5: I have no idea. It is weird timing. There's no
[10:03] Speaker 5: doubt about that. The move itself is not a big surprise.
[10:07] Speaker 5: He has been unpopular. for a long time. The Chip
[10:12] Speaker 5: Kelly situation, the Deshaun Foster hire, both were very poorly
[10:18] Speaker 5: received by the UCLA constituents. Their budget is a mess.
[10:23] Speaker 5: So I don't think anybody was real surprised that they
[10:25] Speaker 5: made the change, but I do think, yes, the week
[10:28] Speaker 5: before Bob Chesney's first game is a little bit weird,
[10:32] Speaker 5: and they're bringing in a guy who's been an executive
[10:34] Speaker 5: with the Lakers. He's going to work pro bono on
[10:37] Speaker 5: an interim basis and I don't know that that's going
[10:41] Speaker 5: to work either. They've got to get somebody in permanently
[10:44] Speaker 5: as soon as they can.
[10:45] Speaker 6: Staying in L.A., you did a story recently on Lincoln Riley.
[10:49] Speaker 6: Why should we believe, John, that he's anything more than
[10:53] Speaker 6: a 9-3 coach that racks up 45 and 50 points
[10:56] Speaker 6: but gives up 40 points to every single game?
[11:00] Speaker 5: I don't think so. I mean, I think the same thing.
[11:04] Speaker 5: I want to see it, that he can be 11-1,
[11:09] Speaker 5: 10-2 with a good defense, and actually he runs the
[11:14] Speaker 5: ball on third and three, or third and one. I
[11:17] Speaker 5: haven't seen that yet since he's been at USC. He
[11:21] Speaker 5: had great playoff teams at Oklahoma, but that was a
[11:25] Speaker 5: little bit different. Big 12 back then, a lot different
[11:27] Speaker 5: than the Big 10 right now. I'm with you, Dick.
[11:30] Speaker 5: I want to see it.
[11:32] Speaker 4: Is there a surprise team in the Big Ten that
[11:33] Speaker 4: we're going to see this year? I'm not saying like
[11:35] Speaker 4: Indiana from two years ago. I'm talking about like a Minnesota,
[11:38] Speaker 4: for example, or a Michigan State that nobody's talking about.
[11:41] Speaker 3: They've got, what, seven ranked teams, I think, guys?
[11:43] Speaker 4: So almost half the conference, about 40% of the conference
[11:47] Speaker 4: is ranked. Is there a surprise team in this Big
[11:50] Speaker 4: Ten that we're not talking about that maybe by the
[11:52] Speaker 4: end of the year we will be talking about, John?
[11:55] Speaker 5: I do, too. UCLA, because I do think Bob Chesney
[11:59] Speaker 5: knows what he's doing. Their schedule is there's a lot
[12:03] Speaker 5: of winnable games. And also Wisconsin, partly for the same reason.
[12:07] Speaker 5: Wisconsin had the hardest schedule in the country last year.
[12:10] Speaker 5: This year, like, there's no Ohio State. There's no Indiana.
[12:13] Speaker 5: They have flipped it. And you guys know, watching the
[12:17] Speaker 5: Washington schedules from year to year, who you miss is
[12:20] Speaker 5: almost as important as who you're playing. And Wisconsin gets
[12:23] Speaker 5: a big break this year. They put more money into NIL.
[12:27] Speaker 5: So I could see Wisconsin ended up like 7-5, 8-4,
[12:30] Speaker 5: kind of surprised.
[12:31] Speaker 3: I'm looking at UCLA's schedule.
[12:33] Speaker 4: At Cal, San Diego State, Purdue, Maryland, then Oregon, but
[12:36] Speaker 4: then Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nevada, Minnesota, Illinois.
[12:39] Speaker 3: That's crazy.
[12:40] Speaker 4: They'll be ranked by the end of October. They might
[12:42] Speaker 4: have eight or nine wins. But how about Cal? Is
[12:45] Speaker 4: our old buddy Tosh LaPoi going to do some magic
[12:47] Speaker 4: in Berkeley, you think? Because I know there's people talking
[12:50] Speaker 4: about Tosh LaPoi. If he ends up killing it at Cal,
[12:53] Speaker 4: then he might be a hot candidate down the road.
[12:57] Speaker 5: Well, he's certainly got a great reputation as a recruiter.
[13:01] Speaker 5: They've done a nice job in the transfer portal. They
[13:03] Speaker 5: had a top 20 class with the portal. And, you know,
[13:07] Speaker 5: the ACC, I don't know that it's open at the
[13:09] Speaker 5: very top, but it's kind of open in that, like,
[13:12] Speaker 5: you know, 3-4-5 window. And Cal's got good enough players.
[13:17] Speaker 5: They certainly have got a good enough quarterback. He's terrific,
[13:21] Speaker 5: you know, to actually move up onto the top tier
[13:25] Speaker 5: and win. you know, that would be a big breakthrough
[13:27] Speaker 5: from them. They have been in the 6-6, 7-5 window
[13:31] Speaker 5: for a long time, but they're putting more money into football.
[13:34] Speaker 5: They got a recruiter. We'll see. I think they got
[13:38] Speaker 5: a shot to actually do something this year.
[13:40] Speaker 6: Well, Tosh can now have $ 3, 000 in a.
[13:43] Speaker 3: Coffee cup if he wants to. That's right. Doesn't matter.
[13:45] Speaker 6: You know, it doesn't matter anymore. John Wildner joining us.
[13:48] Speaker 5: John, what's... You said it, Dick, not me, but I
[13:51] Speaker 5: am silently agreeing. Yeah.
[13:53] Speaker 3: I love it.
[13:53] Speaker 6: Not so silently agreeing.
[13:55] Speaker 3: You know, it's interesting.
[13:56] Speaker 6: Colin Coward, I heard him the other day, he said
[13:58] Speaker 6: he was talking to Kevin Warren, the old Big Ten commissioner.
[14:01] Speaker 6: And they both agreed that the four West Coast Big
[14:04] Speaker 6: Ten schools have given the conference creativity, coaching, and skill
[14:10] Speaker 6: position players, and that the conference has benefited as much
[14:14] Speaker 6: from them as they have from being in the conference.
[14:16] Speaker 3: Do you agree with that statement?
[14:18] Speaker 5: I certainly do agree. I mean, Oregon in the conference, absolutely.
[14:24] Speaker 5: I mean, the Ducks have been in the playoff both years.
[14:26] Speaker 5: They won the Big Ten their first year. No doubt
[14:30] Speaker 5: about that. I mean, I'm not sure that UCLA, for instance,
[14:34] Speaker 5: has been super beneficial to the Big Ten to this point.
[14:39] Speaker 5: You know, it's going to take time. I even think
[14:41] Speaker 5: after two years, we don't really know how this thing
[14:43] Speaker 5: is going to play out long-term. But, yeah, I can
[14:47] Speaker 5: see why the Big Ten thinks it's been beneficial. I mean,
[14:50] Speaker 5: it certainly gets their teams exposed to a whole part
[14:53] Speaker 5: of the country that they hadn't gotten before, and there's
[14:56] Speaker 5: a lot of Big Ten alums out on the West Coast. So, yeah,
[14:59] Speaker 5: there's certainly been some benefits, but we'll see. I'm not
[15:03] Speaker 5: convinced that it's also, you know... But it's different for
[15:08] Speaker 5: each school in some ways, right? More beneficial for some
[15:11] Speaker 5: than others.
[15:11] Speaker 3: Well, John, before you go, you're 1-0.
[15:14] Speaker 4: You got North Carolina last week, by the way, with
[15:17] Speaker 4: the upset over TCU.
[15:18] Speaker 3: So the Wendalorian is off to a great start at 1-0.
[15:22] Speaker 4: You got a full slate of Big Ten games this weekend,
[15:25] Speaker 4: by the way, ending on Sunday with the Apple Cup.
[15:28] Speaker 4: And the Wisconsin-Notre Dame game is starting this week. It
[15:31] Speaker 4: was already started, I guess, but Thursday, September 3rd. We've
[15:34] Speaker 4: got a bunch of games, including Rutgers in Minnesota, Illinois.
[15:38] Speaker 3: What do you like this week to make it 2-0, baby?
[15:42] Speaker 5: Well, I actually was going to make a request. Can
[15:44] Speaker 5: I pick two games?
[15:45] Speaker 3: Of course.
[15:45] Speaker 5: Because I feel compelled to pick the Apple Cup, but
[15:49] Speaker 5: that would not be my first choice.
[15:52] Speaker 3: All right.
[15:52] Speaker 5: Okay. You know, otherwise, I definitely think I would take USC.
[15:58] Speaker 5: I don't even know what the number is against Fresno,
[16:01] Speaker 5: but I will take USC and give the points.
[16:03] Speaker 3: I believe it's 22.5 was the number that I saw.
[16:04] Speaker 4: Yeah, 22.5.
[16:05] Speaker 3: All right, so USC giving 22.5.
[16:05] Speaker 5: Gotcha.
[16:05] Speaker 1: Gotcha.
[16:10] Speaker 5: I'll take them. I think it's a big advantage that
[16:12] Speaker 5: they've already played a game, and I think that their
[16:14] Speaker 5: performance against San Jose State was a little underwhelming, so
[16:18] Speaker 5: the number is probably a little smaller than it should be.
[16:21] Speaker 5: All right. And I will take the Huskies. All right.
[16:24] Speaker 4: Huskies are giving, I'll tell you, it's 23 and a
[16:28] Speaker 4: half right now.
[16:29] Speaker 5: See, I would have wanted more. After what happened last year,
[16:32] Speaker 5: the gap between the sport is flattening out at the top,
[16:38] Speaker 5: but it is becoming more and more vertical when you
[16:41] Speaker 5: go through the tiers. And I think that, you know,
[16:45] Speaker 5: it's getting harder for Washington State against Washington. It's getting harder.
[16:49] Speaker 5: Boise State against Oregon is another example. I think it's
[16:52] Speaker 5: going to be tough for the Broncos to come close
[16:54] Speaker 5: to doing what they did in Eugene two years ago.
[16:57] Speaker 4: All right, we'll see what happens, John. Great stuff, and
[17:00] Speaker 4: we've got a full weekend of games and the first
[17:02] Speaker 4: dog game to talk about next Tuesday on the air.
[17:04] Speaker 4: So great stuff, and we'll talk in a.
[17:06] Speaker 5: Week, man. Thanks, John. Thanks a lot, guys.
[17:08] Speaker 3: All right, John Willner with us on the radio show.
[17:10] Speaker 3: We're going to break. A lot more to get to.
[17:12] Speaker 4: Seahawks getting going a week from tomorrow against the Patriots.
[17:16] Speaker 4: We've got the Mariners in Boston. Apple Cup on Sunday.
[17:19] Speaker 4: A lot more to get to on a busy, busy
[17:20] Speaker 4: Tuesday right here on 93.3 KJRFM.
