[0:19] Speaker 2: All right, boys and girls, we're back on a busy
[0:21] Speaker 2: Tuesday night right here on 93.3 KJRFM. And we're a
[0:25] Speaker 2: lot of folks talking about the Seahawks starting tomorrow against
[0:27] Speaker 2: the Patriots, Huskies, and the Apple Cup on Sunday. But
[0:31] Speaker 2: Mariners have got to start getting some wins and piling
[0:33] Speaker 2: them up fast. Big, big, big, did I say big,
[0:36] Speaker 2: three-game series with the Rangers starting tonight. And a guy
[0:38] Speaker 2: who's having a hell of a year in the Mariner bullpen,
[0:41] Speaker 2: Gabe Spire, with us right now on the radio show
[0:43] Speaker 2: from T-Mobile Park before first pitch against the Rangers tonight. Gabe,
[0:47] Speaker 2: how you doing, man?
[0:49] Speaker 3: I'm good.
[0:49] Speaker 4: Thanks for having me, guys.
[0:50] Speaker 3: Happy to be here.
[0:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, appreciate you jumping on. Thanks for doing this. So,
[0:54] Speaker 2: what's the vibe like, man, inside that clubhouse right now?
[0:57] Speaker 2: I mean, there's no reason to kind of sugarcoat anything.
[1:00] Speaker 2: You guys need to start winning some games and winning
[1:03] Speaker 2: them as fast as you can, obviously, with as many
[1:06] Speaker 2: as you can. So, talk about that. What's the vibe?
[1:09] Speaker 2: What's the atmosphere like in the clubhouse right now, man?
[1:12] Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's been a tough stretch. It's been
[1:14] Speaker 4: a tough season overall, but, you know, to be, you know,
[1:17] Speaker 4: still in it and is a blessing and, and, uh,
[1:20] Speaker 4: we need to take advantage of it. And like you
[1:22] Speaker 4: guys said, start winning some ball games and, um, you know, um,
[1:26] Speaker 4: it's always good to have this kind of rivalry with
[1:28] Speaker 4: the Rangers come in. I think it'll fire us up
[1:30] Speaker 4: and hopefully get the ball rolling here. And, um, but yeah,
[1:34] Speaker 4: every game is, is really big from here on out.
[1:36] Speaker 4: We need to start stringing some wins together and, um,
[1:39] Speaker 4: you know, we're looking forward to the challenge. Um, And, uh,
[1:42] Speaker 4: you know, can't wait to kick it off tonight.
[1:44] Speaker 3: Gabe, what does you mentioned being in it? What does
[1:46] Speaker 3: being in it look like to you? Like how many
[1:48] Speaker 3: games do you need to stay back by this date
[1:51] Speaker 3: or this date? How do you, how do you determine
[1:53] Speaker 3: whether you guys are still in it or not?
[1:56] Speaker 4: You know, it could be out of our hands to
[1:57] Speaker 4: be honest. I mean, if the Astros and Rangers decide
[2:00] Speaker 4: to win every ball game from here on out, there's
[2:02] Speaker 4: not much we can do. You know, all we can
[2:04] Speaker 4: do is focus on, you know, each game every night, um,
[2:07] Speaker 4: and try to do our best, uh, to win each
[2:09] Speaker 4: game and, you know, the rest is kind of out
[2:11] Speaker 4: of our hands. And I think the best way to
[2:14] Speaker 4: go about that is just, you know, pitch to pitch,
[2:16] Speaker 4: inning to inning, kind of breaking it down into smaller
[2:19] Speaker 4: pieces and try to win just each at bat and
[2:23] Speaker 4: go about it that way. And then, you know, hopefully
[2:24] Speaker 4: the wins will stack up. But like I said, you know,
[2:27] Speaker 4: we're kind of in a spot where we're also relying
[2:30] Speaker 4: on other teams to lose games. So it's a tough
[2:32] Speaker 4: spot to be in. But like I said, all we
[2:34] Speaker 4: can do is handle our business and and try to
[2:36] Speaker 4: do our best to win each game.
[2:38] Speaker 2: Well, Gabe Spire, Mariner reliever with us before the M
[2:41] Speaker 2: start a three-game series with the Rangers. And I guess,
[2:44] Speaker 2: how did we get here, right? Like, this is a
[2:47] Speaker 2: team that was eight outs away from the World Series
[2:49] Speaker 2: a year ago. How did we get to a point
[2:53] Speaker 2: where the following year, on the 8th of September, we're
[2:56] Speaker 2: six out in the wild card, six out in the division,
[2:59] Speaker 2: and scratching and clawing our way just to be a
[3:02] Speaker 2: factor in this thing? What happened?
[3:05] Speaker 4: You know, I wish I had a clear-cut answer for you.
[3:07] Speaker 4: You know, my mind, when you ask that question, my
[3:10] Speaker 4: mind goes straight to injuries. You know, we've had a handful,
[3:13] Speaker 4: you know, missing Cal, Donovan. Donovan was a huge addition
[3:16] Speaker 4: for us this offseason. And, you know, he hasn't been
[3:19] Speaker 4: on the field all that much, unfortunately. And, you know,
[3:21] Speaker 4: Matt Brash is a big piece of our bullpen. So,
[3:23] Speaker 4: you know, my, you know, first thought goes to that, injuries. But,
[3:27] Speaker 4: you know, at the same time, you know, we're disappointed
[3:30] Speaker 4: in the way the season's gone. And I wish I
[3:32] Speaker 4: had a better answer for you. But, you know, we've
[3:34] Speaker 4: been injured and we kind of had this like snowball
[3:38] Speaker 4: effect of kind of like just playing bad games, bad baseball,
[3:41] Speaker 4: and it's been hard to stop the snowball. And, you know,
[3:44] Speaker 4: it's all we can do is just take it one
[3:46] Speaker 4: day at a time and grind these, you know, last
[3:48] Speaker 4: games out and try to win as many as possible. And,
[3:51] Speaker 4: you know, it's, you know, it's tough to, you can't
[3:55] Speaker 4: dwell on the past, you know, we're all disappointed in
[3:57] Speaker 4: the way the season's been up to this point, but
[3:59] Speaker 4: it's time to flush that and really just kind of
[4:01] Speaker 4: focus on these last couple of weeks here and and
[4:03] Speaker 4: try to squeeze into the playoffs and get hot.
[4:06] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[4:06] Speaker 2: Well, Gabe, you mentioned you got to flush it at
[4:08] Speaker 2: this point and move on. Gabe Spire with us. Your teammate,
[4:11] Speaker 2: Bryce Miller was on with us a week ago and
[4:13] Speaker 2: he told us on the air that he thought there
[4:16] Speaker 2: was too much chatter up until recently about what happened
[4:20] Speaker 2: a year ago in 2025. Do you kind of share
[4:24] Speaker 2: those same thoughts or no?
[4:26] Speaker 4: Oh, you know, I don't know about that. You know, I,
[4:28] Speaker 4: I know that, you know, there was a lot of
[4:30] Speaker 4: expectations going into this year and, We all kind of
[4:33] Speaker 4: felt them, but, you know, we were up for the challenge.
[4:36] Speaker 4: You know, I'm thinking back to spring training. Everyone was
[4:38] Speaker 4: super excited, you know, being that close to playing the
[4:41] Speaker 4: biggest series in the world. You know, everyone wanted to
[4:45] Speaker 4: get back to that point. And it's been a frustrating
[4:48] Speaker 4: year for a lot of guys. I know a lot
[4:50] Speaker 4: of individual people on this team have not had the
[4:53] Speaker 4: years that they wanted to have individually. And, you know,
[4:57] Speaker 4: as a team, it hasn't gone the way we've hoped. But, yeah.
[5:02] Speaker 4: But like I said, I'm just going to go back to,
[5:03] Speaker 4: you know, we need to flush that and really just
[5:06] Speaker 4: focus on these next couple weeks.
[5:07] Speaker 3: Well, you are one of those players that has had
[5:09] Speaker 3: a very, very good season, and you've only thrown 39 innings.
[5:13] Speaker 3: So let's just talk about what type of workload can
[5:16] Speaker 3: Gabe Spire have between now and the end of the season,
[5:19] Speaker 3: because you're well under what you pitched last year due
[5:21] Speaker 3: to the.
[5:21] Speaker 2: Time being out.
[5:23] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I'm feeling good. I'm feeling fresh. I'm
[5:26] Speaker 4: You know, I'm going to take the ball every time
[5:28] Speaker 4: that phone rings, and it's for me, no doubt. And
[5:31] Speaker 4: it is, you know, it's August, so the body, you know,
[5:34] Speaker 4: it's not feeling great. You know, I have thrown in
[5:37] Speaker 4: quite a few games. But at the same time, for it,
[5:40] Speaker 4: I'm sorry, it's September. For it being September, I'm feeling
[5:44] Speaker 4: pretty good and ready to take the ball whenever they ask.
[5:47] Speaker 2: Well, Gabe Spire with us, and Gabe, I don't know
[5:49] Speaker 2: how much sports talk radio you listen to. First of all,
[5:53] Speaker 2: do you? Do you flip on sports radio in the
[5:55] Speaker 2: car on the way to work?
[5:57] Speaker 4: Oh, I don't. I'm an Apple Music guy, but I
[6:01] Speaker 4: always love joining with you guys and others. It's fun
[6:05] Speaker 4: to talk on the radio. sports talk show.
[6:07] Speaker 2: So for sure, if you were listening, you would have
[6:10] Speaker 2: probably heard a lot of talk about the skipper, right?
[6:13] Speaker 2: I mean, whether fair or unfair, you know, as well
[6:17] Speaker 2: as I, that's one of those jobs where you get
[6:19] Speaker 2: all the blame and maybe not enough credit, right? When
[6:22] Speaker 2: things are going well. So Logan Gilbert was on with
[6:25] Speaker 2: us a few weeks ago, right?
[6:26] Speaker 1: Dick.
[6:26] Speaker 2: And we asked him about Dan. I want to ask
[6:29] Speaker 2: you the same thought. If you were to flip on
[6:31] Speaker 2: this radio station or any other, and you heard criticism
[6:35] Speaker 2: of Dan Wilson, What would your reaction be to that?
[6:39] Speaker 4: You know, Dan is a great manager in my mind.
[6:43] Speaker 4: I've had a few here in the big leagues, and
[6:47] Speaker 4: I love Dan. I think he's a great baseball mind,
[6:50] Speaker 4: you know, Mariners legend. He led us to, you know,
[6:53] Speaker 4: almost the World Series last year in his first, you know,
[6:55] Speaker 4: full year managing. So, you know, he's got what it takes,
[6:59] Speaker 4: and we're behind him. It's really not– there shouldn't be
[7:01] Speaker 4: much blame on him. It should be on us. You know,
[7:03] Speaker 4: we haven't played– good baseball and it's not Dan's fault. So, um, um,
[7:08] Speaker 4: I love Dan. I think he's doing a great job and, um,
[7:10] Speaker 4: I hope he stays for the long haul.
[7:12] Speaker 3: Well, he's pretty consistent in his, uh, post game speeches.
[7:15] Speaker 3: Like he never raises his voice above like a two
[7:19] Speaker 3: out of 10. Does he raise his voice with you guys?
[7:21] Speaker 3: Is he different in the clubhouse? Maybe after one of
[7:23] Speaker 3: those stinkers that you guys have had that, uh, you know, does,
[7:26] Speaker 3: does he get after a little bit or does he
[7:27] Speaker 3: stay calm all the time?
[7:30] Speaker 4: You know, 99% of the time he's calm, but he
[7:32] Speaker 4: does have a switch and we have flipped it. So
[7:36] Speaker 4: it happens. But yeah, he's intense when he needs to be.
[7:40] Speaker 4: But like I said, 99% of the time he's pretty
[7:43] Speaker 4: even keeled.
[7:44] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[7:44] Speaker 2: Well, Dick asked about how many games out do you
[7:47] Speaker 2: have to be? How close do you have to be
[7:48] Speaker 2: before you kind of still feel like you're in it
[7:51] Speaker 2: or maybe even out of it? How much are you
[7:53] Speaker 2: scoreboard watching? You know, we're doing that every day. We're
[7:56] Speaker 2: checking the standings. We're reading the scores of the Astros
[7:58] Speaker 2: game and the Ranger game on the air. I mean,
[8:01] Speaker 2: you're in the bullpen, so you would have to look
[8:03] Speaker 2: obviously above your head to see the scoreboard. But do
[8:06] Speaker 2: you check the scores on a daily basis? Are we
[8:08] Speaker 2: doing that yet? Yeah, I am.
[8:12] Speaker 4: You know, I want to make the playoffs, so I
[8:13] Speaker 4: want to see where we're at and kind of know
[8:16] Speaker 4: the standing. So, yeah, I'm not going to lie. I
[8:18] Speaker 4: check it. But I think I honestly need to stop,
[8:21] Speaker 4: you know, because we just need to focus on winning
[8:23] Speaker 4: our ballgames, and the rest is kind of out of
[8:26] Speaker 4: our hands. We can only control what we can control,
[8:28] Speaker 4: and that's getting, you know, our ballclub wins and not
[8:31] Speaker 4: worrying about what the other teams are doing.
[8:33] Speaker 2: I got you. Well, Gabe, why don't we do this?
[8:34] Speaker 2: We'll just agree to do this. You give us your number,
[8:37] Speaker 2: and we'll just text you when we think you need
[8:39] Speaker 2: to know something. All right. How's that?
[8:42] Speaker 4: That's fine.
[8:43] Speaker 2: That's fine.
[8:43] Speaker 4: But we're going to fight to the end, no matter
[8:46] Speaker 4: what the number is.
[8:47] Speaker 2: I got you. All right, man. Hey, go get him
[8:49] Speaker 2: tonight and we'll talk down the road. Appreciate it, man.
[8:52] Speaker 4: All right.
[8:53] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:53] Speaker 4: Thanks for having me.
[8:54] Speaker 2: You bet. Gabe Spire with us, Mariner Reliever on the
[8:57] Speaker 2: radio program. And look, I mean, you're just you're not
[9:00] Speaker 2: going to get a guy to say a bad thing
[9:01] Speaker 2: about Dan Wilson. He is light in that locker room.
[9:04] Speaker 2: He's Nobody has ever said that Dan Wilson is a
[9:07] Speaker 2: jerk or an a-hole or a bad dude. He's a
[9:10] Speaker 2: good dude. Everybody likes Dan. But is that what this
[9:15] Speaker 2: team needs right now? That's the important thing. I don't
[9:19] Speaker 2: care what you are, what your personality is, how you behave,
[9:23] Speaker 2: how you treat other people. You just give me what
[9:26] Speaker 2: this team needs to win. And if that's you being
[9:29] Speaker 2: a jerk, then go for it. If that's you being
[9:32] Speaker 2: a hard ass, then go for it. If that's you
[9:34] Speaker 2: being everybody's buddy, if that's what gets me a World
[9:37] Speaker 2: Series dick, then go for it. But it's kind of
[9:40] Speaker 2: becoming increasingly obvious that whatever Dan's doing is not what
[9:44] Speaker 2: this team needs.
