[0:19] Speaker 2: All right, we're back live from Jimmy's across the street
[0:23] Speaker 2: from T-Mobile Park. What do you say we head across
[0:25] Speaker 2: the street to T-Mobile Park and Talk about one of
[0:28] Speaker 2: our favorite guys. I got to tell you, man, I
[0:29] Speaker 2: know it's kind of random, Dick, but I want to
[0:31] Speaker 2: just tell Bryce Miller right now how freaking pumped up
[0:34] Speaker 2: I was when he went to Toronto in game one
[0:37] Speaker 2: and shoved it up to Blue Jays' ass for six
[0:39] Speaker 2: innings in the ALCS. That's going to be one of
[0:41] Speaker 2: my all-time great performances. And I don't think the guy
[0:44] Speaker 2: gets to hear that enough, how great he was in
[0:46] Speaker 2: that game one of the ALCS last year. And Bryce
[0:49] Speaker 2: Miller joins us right now on the radio show. Bryce,
[0:51] Speaker 2: how are you, man?
[0:54] Speaker 3: I'm good.
[0:54] Speaker 1: How are you?
[0:55] Speaker 4: Good.
[0:56] Speaker 2: Appreciate you jumping on, man, and joining us. So Dick
[0:59] Speaker 2: and I are doing the math on what it would
[1:01] Speaker 2: take for this team to make the playoffs, obviously. We
[1:03] Speaker 2: believe Buss is up and running, but give us your
[1:06] Speaker 2: thoughts on kind of the vibe inside that clubhouse right
[1:10] Speaker 2: now in that stadium after you guys went to Boston
[1:13] Speaker 2: and got a big series win. You know you're behind
[1:15] Speaker 2: the eight ball, but tell me about the vibe around
[1:17] Speaker 2: this clubhouse right now, man.
[1:20] Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. You know, the road trip didn't start
[1:24] Speaker 3: out how we wanted in Toronto. But, yeah, we were
[1:28] Speaker 3: happy to go into Boston and take a series. And,
[1:31] Speaker 3: you know, Boston, that's a good team over there. And
[1:34] Speaker 3: I think we played good baseball. You got it, Jackson.
[1:37] Speaker 1: Where's he going?
[1:38] Speaker 3: Can you hear me?
[1:41] Speaker 2: Go ahead. Go ahead, Bryce.
[1:42] Speaker 3: Sorry. You got me? Okay, yeah.
[1:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
[1:47] Speaker 3: Like I said, we didn't start the road trip out
[1:50] Speaker 3: how we wanted. We went to Toronto and didn't play well,
[1:53] Speaker 3: but went into Boston and took a series from a
[1:57] Speaker 3: really good team. I thought we swung the bat really well.
[2:01] Speaker 3: We pitched pretty well for the most part. I think
[2:04] Speaker 3: we'll carry that momentum into September and into this weekend
[2:09] Speaker 3: against the A's.
[2:11] Speaker 4: What do you think changed in the crispness of the team?
[2:15] Speaker 4: You mentioned the offense, but the defense was far better
[2:18] Speaker 4: in the Boston series than it was in the Toronto series.
[2:20] Speaker 4: Was there any message? Was there a meeting? Was Dan
[2:24] Speaker 4: talking before the Boston series? Because you guys did look
[2:27] Speaker 4: like a different baseball team at Fenway than you did
[2:29] Speaker 4: in Toronto.
[2:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, no. There wasn't really anything revolutionary that was said.
[2:38] Speaker 3: I think that And, you know, for starters, anytime you
[2:42] Speaker 3: go and you get the opportunity to play in Fenway,
[2:45] Speaker 3: that's always fun. And I think it brings out the
[2:47] Speaker 3: best in a lot of people. And I think, you know,
[2:50] Speaker 3: sometimes you just need something, whether it's something random or
[2:53] Speaker 3: something small, to give you a little spark as a team.
[2:56] Speaker 3: And hopefully, you know, that Boston series will get us
[3:00] Speaker 3: going and we'll carry that into the rest of the month.
[3:05] Speaker 3: We definitely... We know we need a big month. We
[3:08] Speaker 3: need to win a lot of games this month, but
[3:11] Speaker 3: I think we all have it in front of us,
[3:15] Speaker 3: and we see what we have ahead, and it's time
[3:18] Speaker 3: to go.
[3:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt. Well, your manager is 35-18 since he
[3:22] Speaker 2: took over in September, right? I mean, so there's no
[3:25] Speaker 2: doubt there's a track record of that. Do you guys
[3:28] Speaker 2: kind of lean on that a little bit, what happened
[3:30] Speaker 2: two years ago, what happened last year, that, man, we've
[3:33] Speaker 2: been here before in the month of September and we've responded.
[3:36] Speaker 2: Does that mean anything at all to this year's team, Bryce?
[3:39] Speaker 3: No. I don't think so. I think it's, you know, well,
[3:45] Speaker 3: the past is the past. And, um, you know, I
[3:48] Speaker 3: think that's something that we, we might've almost done too
[3:50] Speaker 3: much of this year is, you know, talking about last
[3:53] Speaker 3: year and how, how good last year was and how
[3:55] Speaker 3: close we were to the world series. And I think, uh,
[3:58] Speaker 3: we almost did that a little too much. You know,
[4:00] Speaker 3: I think we need to, um, be in the moment and, um,
[4:06] Speaker 3: kind of, you know, take it day by day and
[4:08] Speaker 3: game by game and go from there. Um, I think
[4:11] Speaker 3: you can, look at the past a little too much
[4:14] Speaker 3: and be a little complacent with where you're at in
[4:16] Speaker 3: the present. So I think that's kind of where we're at.
[4:20] Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I remember you mentioning that I think it
[4:22] Speaker 4: was April or May this year and that, you know,
[4:25] Speaker 4: that you guys are the hunted this year and that
[4:29] Speaker 4: almost makes you have to play better when you're the hunted, right?
[4:33] Speaker 4: And have you guys now gotten that where, you know,
[4:36] Speaker 4: you are the hunted now and you are able to
[4:38] Speaker 4: flip the switch in September?
[4:42] Speaker 3: Yeah, I hope so. I mean, it was like I said,
[4:45] Speaker 3: that was something that we talked a lot about going
[4:48] Speaker 3: into the season, you know, with being two innings away
[4:51] Speaker 3: from a World Series. But that was kind of, you know,
[4:54] Speaker 3: how we were going to be viewed, you know, from
[4:57] Speaker 3: the other clubhouses. And but like I said, it's. We're
[5:03] Speaker 3: at where we're at right now and we can't change
[5:05] Speaker 3: what's already been done in the games that are finished.
[5:07] Speaker 3: So all we can do is go out and win tonight,
[5:09] Speaker 3: win tomorrow and take it game by game and series
[5:14] Speaker 3: by series. And hopefully at the end of this month,
[5:16] Speaker 3: we look up and we're in a spot where we
[5:17] Speaker 3: want to be.
[5:18] Speaker 2: Well, Bryce Miller is with us, and Bryce, there's a
[5:20] Speaker 2: lot about you I appreciate. One thing is that you
[5:23] Speaker 2: wear your emotions on your sleeve, right? There's no doubt
[5:25] Speaker 2: about that, and this year's been frustrating for a lot
[5:28] Speaker 2: of us fans. You know, guys like us have been
[5:29] Speaker 2: fans for 50 years of this baseball team, waiting for
[5:32] Speaker 2: the first World Series ever, and I can see the
[5:34] Speaker 2: frustration on your face, and I think sometimes in this business,
[5:38] Speaker 2: we don't really understand what's happening behind the scenes, so
[5:41] Speaker 2: we just kind of form perceptions about what's going on,
[5:43] Speaker 2: and I want to ask you, you know, typically when
[5:46] Speaker 2: a Major League Baseball season starts, as a starting pitcher,
[5:49] Speaker 2: you know that every fifth day you're going out there,
[5:51] Speaker 2: and that's it, right? You're a creature of habit. You've
[5:54] Speaker 2: been doing that your whole life, and now things change,
[5:57] Speaker 2: and all of a sudden it's a six-man. All of
[5:59] Speaker 2: a sudden it's a piggyback. Did that throw you off
[6:03] Speaker 2: any at all this year, you think, having to deal
[6:06] Speaker 2: with something that typically you haven't dealt with as a
[6:09] Speaker 2: starting pitcher?
[6:13] Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, it's definitely been a non-traditional season, you know,
[6:21] Speaker 3: when it comes to that point. But at the end
[6:24] Speaker 3: of the day, you know, you got to go out
[6:26] Speaker 3: and whenever they tell you to throw, that's when you
[6:29] Speaker 3: got to throw. And so whether that's on five days,
[6:33] Speaker 3: six days, seven days, whatever it is, you know, you
[6:37] Speaker 3: kind of plan your week and your preparation for, whatever
[6:40] Speaker 3: day it is, um, that, that is your day. And
[6:43] Speaker 3: so I think that's, you know, back in college, you know,
[6:48] Speaker 3: everybody was on a seven day in college and then
[6:50] Speaker 3: you get to the minor leagues and most guys are
[6:52] Speaker 3: on a six day pretty consistently. And then you get
[6:54] Speaker 3: to the big leagues and it's five and six days
[6:56] Speaker 3: back and forth. Um, and so, yeah, this, this year
[7:00] Speaker 3: it's been a lot of, you know, five, six, seven,
[7:03] Speaker 3: mainly six, seven, and a lot of seven days. Um,
[7:07] Speaker 3: but like I said, it's, uh, It's just a little
[7:10] Speaker 3: different routine. It takes a little bit of, you know,
[7:12] Speaker 3: different preparation to be ready on seven days compared to
[7:17] Speaker 3: on five. But, you know, we're all professionals and we
[7:21] Speaker 3: know how to structure our weeks however we need to
[7:25] Speaker 3: to be ready on whatever day they tell us.
[7:29] Speaker 4: Bryce, you had the lap thing recently, but you threw
[7:32] Speaker 4: 65 good pitches on Wednesday in a win. How many
[7:36] Speaker 4: pitches do you think you can go in your next
[7:38] Speaker 4: start if you needed to?
[7:39] Speaker 3: I mean, I'm good to go 100 if they would
[7:46] Speaker 3: like me to. Whatever they need, you know. I really didn't.
[7:51] Speaker 3: It was 10 days between starts, between the Chicago and
[7:56] Speaker 3: the Boston start. I'm not sure if that's partially the
[8:01] Speaker 3: reason why I threw 65, but I'm good to go.
[8:06] Speaker 3: We're at the point of the year where I'm around
[8:10] Speaker 3: 100 innings. I'm in a good spot for whatever the
[8:14] Speaker 3: week or the situation calls for. Ideally, I got no...
[8:20] Speaker 3: uh limitations on pitch count and i can go out
[8:22] Speaker 3: there and throw until so dan comes and gets the
[8:24] Speaker 3: ball from.
[8:25] Speaker 2: Me yeah well i love your attitude you're a bulldog
[8:28] Speaker 2: man no doubt about it i can see it in
[8:29] Speaker 2: your voice in your face how ticked off you are
[8:31] Speaker 2: when you're getting yanked out of a game and you
[8:33] Speaker 2: know the fifth inning so i love that attitude from
[8:35] Speaker 2: you but bryce i want to just just wrap one
[8:37] Speaker 2: thing up because you said something there about you felt
[8:39] Speaker 2: like maybe you were talking too much about last year
[8:42] Speaker 2: can you expand on that like what does that look
[8:44] Speaker 2: like what what did that look like behind the scenes.
[8:50] Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, coming into this season and
[8:52] Speaker 3: spring training and just about every single meeting that we've
[8:55] Speaker 3: had as a team up until about a month ago,
[8:59] Speaker 3: it was every single time, you know, it comes up of, oh,
[9:03] Speaker 3: you know, last year we did this. Last year we
[9:05] Speaker 3: were in the ALCS. Last year we almost went to
[9:09] Speaker 3: the World Series. And I think there comes a point
[9:13] Speaker 3: where we recognize that, you know, we had a good
[9:17] Speaker 3: season last year and we have– expectations that we want
[9:20] Speaker 3: to meet. Um, but there also comes a point where
[9:24] Speaker 3: you got to let go of that. This is a
[9:26] Speaker 3: new season. What we did last year has nothing to
[9:29] Speaker 3: do with what we do this year. Um, and we
[9:33] Speaker 3: just got to go out there and play, you know,
[9:34] Speaker 3: it is, it wouldn't have mattered if we were in
[9:36] Speaker 3: the world series last year or not, that's not going
[9:38] Speaker 3: to change the results that we have this year. Um,
[9:41] Speaker 3: and I think that's, you know, something that we, we
[9:44] Speaker 3: kind of as a team, um, talked about um in
[9:48] Speaker 3: our our last meeting was like all right whatever you
[9:51] Speaker 3: know our expectations were whatever happened last year it's done
[9:56] Speaker 3: we can't relive it. We're living now. We're living in
[10:01] Speaker 3: a new season with new difficulties and new opportunities, and
[10:09] Speaker 3: it's time to move on and go out and win
[10:12] Speaker 3: today and win this series, win this month, and get
[10:16] Speaker 3: into the postseason and make a new story.
[10:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt. Bryce, appreciate you, man. Thanks for doing this.
[10:22] Speaker 2: Best of luck in your next start, and we'll talk
[10:24] Speaker 2: down the road, buddy.
[10:25] Speaker 3: Yes, sir. Thank you.
[10:28] Speaker 1: All right, man.
[10:28] Speaker 2: Bryce Miller with us on the radio show. Wow.
[10:31] Speaker 1: Wow.
[10:32] Speaker 2: I don't even know how to respond to that. I mean,
[10:34] Speaker 2: Jerry's Brewer is going to be on with us next segment.
[10:36] Speaker 2: We might want to replay that and get Jerry's take
[10:39] Speaker 2: on that. I mean, unless I'm missing something, Jackson and Dick,
[10:43] Speaker 2: he's basically telling us that up until recently– They had
[10:47] Speaker 2: a hard time kind of letting go of what happened
[10:49] Speaker 2: a year ago.
[10:50] Speaker 4: And the topic of last year kept coming up.
[10:53] Speaker 2: I got to hear that again. I got to hear
[10:55] Speaker 2: that again. Let's talk about this. Maybe we'll try to
[10:58] Speaker 2: get it for Jerry next on 93.3 KJRFM.
