[0:49] Speaker 1: Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey, and your host, Dave Zocchi-Muller.
[0:54] Speaker 2: All right, well, hey, look at this.
[0:56] Speaker 3: Normally on Tuesdays at 4 o'clock, but I don't know
[1:00] Speaker 3: if the Kraken would appreciate us kicking them off the
[1:02] Speaker 3: air to talk Husky football this afternoon. So we're moving
[1:05] Speaker 3: things around. We are showing our versatility, baby, and spreading
[1:09] Speaker 3: our wings. We're at the Emerald Queen Casino. Mario Bailey,
[1:13] Speaker 3: Greg Lewis are at Parts Unknown. Don't want to reveal
[1:17] Speaker 3: their locations because they're big stars. And if we tell
[1:19] Speaker 3: you where they are, they'll get swarmed by autograph seekers
[1:23] Speaker 3: and well-wishers. So we'll just say the two of them
[1:26] Speaker 3: right now are joining us on the telephone to talk
[1:29] Speaker 3: some Husky football.
[1:30] Speaker 2: Greg, Mario, how are you guys? What's going on?
[1:35] Speaker 4: I'm doing all right. You know, it's always tough for
[1:38] Speaker 4: me when the Huskies struggle over the weekend. I try
[1:42] Speaker 4: to keep my analysis honest and to the point, but
[1:45] Speaker 4: deep down inside, I'm a Husky honk. So it hurts.
[1:48] Speaker 4: It really hurts me when this program isn't doing well.
[1:51] Speaker 4: And right now, I think there are a lot of
[1:53] Speaker 4: issues with the program. There are a lot of things
[1:54] Speaker 4: going on that got to get fixed. and I don't
[1:58] Speaker 4: know in the midseason how much of a change we
[2:02] Speaker 4: can make and pivot, but I think right now there's
[2:05] Speaker 4: time to take it.
[2:06] Speaker 2: Let's go to you and give you the floor first.
[2:08] Speaker 2: I mean, Greg's right.
[2:09] Speaker 3: There's a lot to talk about here, a lot to unpack.
[2:11] Speaker 3: Why don't you just take the floor and give us
[2:14] Speaker 3: your thoughts on what you've seen from UW after the
[2:16] Speaker 3: first six games of the year at 3-3, man.
[2:18] Speaker 5: Go. Well, I said a few weeks ago, and then
[2:23] Speaker 5: Greg made me regret it, that I said we were cooked.
[2:27] Speaker 5: And I guess I was right. I didn't want to
[2:30] Speaker 5: be right on that time. I didn't think we were cooked.
[2:33] Speaker 5: But right now, we're going to struggle to win one game.
[2:37] Speaker 5: And as Greg said, that hurts to see the program there.
[2:40] Speaker 5: This past game, just watching the offense, like I said,
[2:43] Speaker 5: we never start off fast. We continue to have slow starts.
[2:53] Speaker 4: Hot.
[2:54] Speaker 2: Did we lose Mario, or was that just him abruptly
[2:56] Speaker 2: ending his point there? I think it was the latter,
[2:58] Speaker 2: by the way. Craig, you want to go ahead and
[3:00] Speaker 2: jump in? Take the reins. Go for it.
[3:04] Speaker 4: Absolutely. I think right now, you know, Mario was going
[3:07] Speaker 4: down the line talking about the slow starts to the offense,
[3:10] Speaker 4: which is prevalent. I think we had some movement in
[3:15] Speaker 4: the second half, but we can talk a little bit
[3:16] Speaker 4: more about that in a second, because I think people
[3:19] Speaker 4: want to talk quarterback controversy. I also think defensively and
[3:24] Speaker 4: to me, it's more about. who we are and when
[3:27] Speaker 4: it relates to toughness and readiness to play in the
[3:29] Speaker 4: Big Ten. Big Ten football has always been synonymous with big, strong, tough, hard-playing,
[3:37] Speaker 4: strong defenses, run games and all of those things. And
[3:42] Speaker 4: coming in, we knew that it was going to take
[3:44] Speaker 4: a little while to build up, and I thought we
[3:46] Speaker 4: made some progress last year, but we clearly have taken
[3:49] Speaker 4: a step back this year in those departments. I think
[3:52] Speaker 4: right now when you watch– Our offensive line, we watch
[3:57] Speaker 4: our defensive line, our linebackers. There's a case to be
[4:01] Speaker 4: made that the other teams are bigger and stronger and
[4:05] Speaker 4: just dominating us up front. And it looks like it
[4:08] Speaker 4: did two years ago. And that's disheartening that we've fallen back. Now,
[4:14] Speaker 4: I'm a realist, and I know that a lot of
[4:16] Speaker 4: this has to do with us coming into the Big
[4:18] Speaker 4: Ten knowing there was going to be struggles the first
[4:21] Speaker 4: few years, not getting all the revenue share, and then
[4:23] Speaker 4: having to– flip our roster from a West Coast-style offense
[4:28] Speaker 4: and get to the Big Ten. But I think there's
[4:30] Speaker 4: some strategic decisions we've made. Quarterback position, for one. We're
[4:35] Speaker 4: running the drop back, throw it down the field from
[4:37] Speaker 4: the pocket type of offense, but we have more of
[4:39] Speaker 4: a scrambling, athletic, shorter quarterback that isn't a good fit
[4:44] Speaker 4: right now. I think we have a lot of young
[4:46] Speaker 4: guys on the defensive line and on the offensive line
[4:49] Speaker 4: who are 17, 18, 19 years old going up against 22,
[4:51] Speaker 4: 23-year-old guys who that have played smash-mouth football that need
[4:57] Speaker 4: to get back in the weight room for another year
[4:59] Speaker 4: or two, and unfortunately we don't have that luxury where
[5:02] Speaker 4: we're playing them now. And then, you know, how do
[5:05] Speaker 4: you go out and get in the transfer portal and
[5:08] Speaker 4: lure guys away when you don't necessarily have the amount
[5:11] Speaker 4: of money that some other teams have to lure them in?
[5:14] Speaker 4: So there's some issues there, and those aren't things that
[5:16] Speaker 4: are going to necessarily get corrected by Friday.
[5:20] Speaker 2: Mario, how about you?
[5:22] Speaker 3: I mean, let's first of all, let's go back to
[5:24] Speaker 3: the offense, right? Because this is an offense that last
[5:27] Speaker 3: year was 17th in the country in scoring offense, and
[5:30] Speaker 3: now they're 88th in the country in scoring offense. So,
[5:34] Speaker 3: you know, Jed's talking a lot about youth on the
[5:37] Speaker 3: offensive line with guys like Cody Green.
[5:38] Speaker 2: He's talking a lot about injuries. He even mentioned it yesterday.
[5:42] Speaker 3: That, you know, not all the sacks are on the
[5:44] Speaker 3: offensive line because the quarterback's hanging out of the ball
[5:46] Speaker 3: a little bit too long. Kind of called out DeMond
[5:48] Speaker 3: yesterday a bit, I thought, at the press conference. So
[5:51] Speaker 3: what is the issue with this offense? Because clearly it's
[5:54] Speaker 3: the much bigger problem right now than the defense, which
[5:58] Speaker 3: might start to be a problem if this offense continues to.
[6:01] Speaker 2: Play the way that it is.
[6:04] Speaker 5: Can you hear me, first of all?
[6:06] Speaker 2: I got you. Yes. Yes, we have you.
[6:08] Speaker 5: All right. The first thing is what I said. We
[6:11] Speaker 5: can't continue to come off with these slow starts. We
[6:14] Speaker 5: got to score early. But the biggest problem is the
[6:18] Speaker 5: offensive line. The offensive line, we were shuffling around and
[6:22] Speaker 5: having different guys. We finally got Landon Hatchett out there.
[6:26] Speaker 5: He struggled. You could tell it was his first game.
[6:30] Speaker 5: It always starts in the trenches. It starts with the line,
[6:32] Speaker 5: but then our quarterback, We have an offensive coordinator who's
[6:36] Speaker 5: our head coach who wants to do drop-back passing. And
[6:39] Speaker 5: our quarterback is not a drop-back passer. He's a guy
[6:42] Speaker 5: that you have to get out on the pocket, move
[6:44] Speaker 5: the pocket, get him on the run, do things. He
[6:47] Speaker 5: can't just drop back and pass the ball. And just
[6:50] Speaker 5: this past game, we had negative three rushing yards. You
[6:53] Speaker 5: can't have that. You can blame it on injuries, but
[6:57] Speaker 5: I would blame it on the offensive coordinator putting guys
[6:59] Speaker 5: in position to make plays. But it starts with the
[7:02] Speaker 5: offensive line. And I'm not going for the excuse about
[7:05] Speaker 5: the 18 and 19-year-olds. We started off the season swearing
[7:10] Speaker 5: that we had a chance to make it to the playoffs,
[7:12] Speaker 5: and we knew we had those 18 and 19-year-olds. So
[7:15] Speaker 5: don't start with that now. Every team has that luxury.
[7:19] Speaker 5: Some teams have a bunch of seniors and juniors, but
[7:22] Speaker 5: a lot of teams have some guys that start off
[7:24] Speaker 5: and It's a different ballgame now. Guys are being prepared.
[7:27] Speaker 5: They're having nutrition. They're lifting weights. So I'm not going
[7:31] Speaker 5: with that excuse. I'm hoping that we have a new
[7:33] Speaker 5: quarterback and he gets to run the offense that Jed
[7:36] Speaker 5: Fish wants to run. I said this and I'll continue
[7:39] Speaker 5: to say this. A great offensive coordinator doesn't make his
[7:43] Speaker 5: team adjust to him. He adjusts to the talent that
[7:47] Speaker 5: he has. And I don't think we've done that.
[7:49] Speaker 2: Got it.
[7:49] Speaker 3: Well, all right, that's Mario Bailey. Greg Lewis is with us. Greg,
[7:52] Speaker 3: hold that thought. All right, we're going to break because
[7:54] Speaker 3: we're going to come back and talk about all that.
[7:56] Speaker 3: We're going to talk about the quarterback situation. Have we
[7:58] Speaker 3: seen the last potentially of DeMond Williams at Washington? He's
[8:01] Speaker 3: hurt right now. What if Elijah Brown takes the job
[8:03] Speaker 3: and runs with it? And a couple weeks ago, if
[8:05] Speaker 3: not last week, I think we asked you on the
[8:07] Speaker 3: air about maybe replacing DeMond with Elijah, even getting some drives,
[8:11] Speaker 3: and you called that nonsense with a capital N on
[8:14] Speaker 3: the last show. Are you ready to change your opinion
[8:17] Speaker 3: on that at all? We'll get more with Greg and Mario.
[8:19] Speaker 3: Husky Honks brought to you by our friends at Frostbrood
[8:22] Speaker 3: Coors Light next on 93.3 KJRFM.
[8:27] Speaker 2: Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey, Husky Honks.
[8:29] Speaker 3: Normally at 4 o'clock we've got Kraken Hockey today, and
[8:31] Speaker 3: normally we're on the air at 3, but we've got
[8:33] Speaker 3: Kraken Hockey today, so Ian Furness has the day off.
[8:36] Speaker 3: Big thanks to our friends at Delta Airlines, Hyder Construction,
[8:39] Speaker 3: Mitsubishi Electric Heating and Air Conditioning, and, of course, our
[8:42] Speaker 3: friends at Frostbrood Coors Light.
[8:45] Speaker 2: All right, Greg, Mario, let's get into it.
[8:47] Speaker 3: And, Mario, why don't we start with you?
[8:50] Speaker 2: Have you seen enough of DeMond Williams?
[8:51] Speaker 3: Even when he's healthy, you want to make this number
[8:54] Speaker 3: seven show the rest of the way? How do you
[8:56] Speaker 3: want to proceed with the quarterback situation, Mario?
[9:00] Speaker 5: I think we should see Elijah Brown the rest of
[9:02] Speaker 5: the way, but I think Coach has a tie. He
[9:06] Speaker 5: brought this young man from Arizona. He spent the last
[9:09] Speaker 5: three seasons with him. I know he's making a lot
[9:12] Speaker 5: of money, but I think Coach with his relationship with DeMond,
[9:17] Speaker 5: I think he's going to have to play him at
[9:19] Speaker 5: least one more time when he's healthy. But my personal
[9:22] Speaker 5: opinion after watching one half of football, watching this young
[9:26] Speaker 5: man throw the ball 39 times and get rid of
[9:29] Speaker 5: the ball very fast and he could drop back. He's
[9:32] Speaker 5: 28 for 39, but Out of those 11, I think
[9:35] Speaker 5: he threw like seven of those fade routes that, you know,
[9:39] Speaker 5: it's never going to be too many completions with that.
[9:41] Speaker 5: I thought he did a wonderful job, and he looks
[9:43] Speaker 5: like he should fit in Jed's offense. But I think
[9:46] Speaker 5: when DeMond comes back, Coach is going to give him
[9:48] Speaker 5: an opportunity.
[9:49] Speaker 3: Okay, Greg, how about you? Are you ready to pull
[9:52] Speaker 3: the plug on number one and go to number seven?
[9:56] Speaker 4: Before I answer that, let me say this. I know
[9:58] Speaker 4: Mario said he's not buying the youngs, deal and the
[10:01] Speaker 4: fact that people were expecting us to be in the playoffs.
[10:04] Speaker 4: Let me say this. I thought that was unrealistic from
[10:06] Speaker 4: the beginning. There's no way I thought this team was
[10:08] Speaker 4: playoff ready nor going to sneak into the playoffs. I
[10:11] Speaker 4: think young is young, and you're not going to win
[10:12] Speaker 4: with young teams. I guarantee you Indiana last year had
[10:16] Speaker 4: one of the oldest teams in football, and that's when
[10:18] Speaker 4: you win, when your players are mature. Having said that,
[10:20] Speaker 4: DeMond Williams, I think I've been clear that all year
[10:23] Speaker 4: that I don't think that for this offense he's the
[10:26] Speaker 4: right quarterback. He's not going to turn into a great
[10:30] Speaker 4: in-the-pocket passer, drop back, be patient, get to your third read,
[10:35] Speaker 4: and not have happy feet between now and Friday or
[10:38] Speaker 4: whenever he gets healthy. DeMond is who he is, and
[10:41] Speaker 4: if we're going to run this offense, then we need
[10:44] Speaker 4: to make the switch. Now, is that going to happen? Probably.
[10:47] Speaker 4: What Mario said holds true. It's not just the relationship,
[10:50] Speaker 4: but I believe when you're trying to lure guys back
[10:54] Speaker 4: to your program or to your program, you make certain commitments.
[10:57] Speaker 4: And a $ 4 million commitment I'm sure came along with,
[11:01] Speaker 4: and you're going to be the guy when you're healthy.
[11:04] Speaker 4: And if you're not healthy, I'm sorry, whenever you're healthy,
[11:08] Speaker 4: we're going to start with you. So I think Jed
[11:11] Speaker 4: is probably obligated in some ways based on the contract,
[11:15] Speaker 4: whether it's in writing or it's been said. that if
[11:17] Speaker 4: you're healthy, you're our guy, and we're making that commitment
[11:20] Speaker 4: to you. So it will probably take— I' m just saying that's
[11:24] Speaker 4: how things happen in these realms. I'm saying that it
[11:27] Speaker 4: probably will see DeMond at least one more time while
[11:31] Speaker 4: he's healthy before they would make any kind of move
[11:34] Speaker 4: because they're going to stick with him. based on trying
[11:36] Speaker 4: to lure him, and that goes to your credibility when
[11:39] Speaker 4: you're recruiting the next guy. So I think they'll be
[11:42] Speaker 4: strapped by some of that. So we'll probably see DeMond
[11:44] Speaker 4: again when he's healthy, but I think for sure from
[11:47] Speaker 4: what we've seen the last half of the last game,
[11:50] Speaker 4: we have a guy who's tall enough, who's patient enough,
[11:53] Speaker 4: and who is able to progress to the third read
[11:58] Speaker 4: on downs, and he will be a better fit for
[12:00] Speaker 4: this offense.
[12:01] Speaker 3: Yeah, I just, I mean, Greg, I really hope that
[12:04] Speaker 3: what you're saying is not accurate, that there's a clause
[12:07] Speaker 3: in his contract that he has to play if he's healthy.
[12:10] Speaker 2: That's ridiculous. Yeah, unless there.
[12:12] Speaker 4: Was a clause in the contract, I'm just saying that
[12:14] Speaker 4: that's probably the conversation that happened. Yeah.
[12:17] Speaker 2: Okay, well, forget the conversation because he's not playing well. Yeah.
[12:21] Speaker 2: 21 starts.
[12:22] Speaker 3: I mean, this is an offense that is what? What
[12:24] Speaker 3: did we say, 88th in the country in scoring? They're
[12:27] Speaker 3: 133rd in sacks allowed. There's only three teams.
[12:30] Speaker 4: No disagreement for me.
[12:31] Speaker 3: Three teams in college football that have allowed more sacks
[12:33] Speaker 3: and have played six games or more than us.
[12:35] Speaker 2: I mean, like, what are we doing here, man?
[12:37] Speaker 3: So I guess the question with DeMond Williams is exactly
[12:41] Speaker 3: what you said. When he's healthy, and right now, Mario,
[12:44] Speaker 3: that's not a question because he's not healthy.
[12:46] Speaker 2: Does Jed Fish owe.
[12:47] Speaker 3: It to DeMond Williams, despite what Elijah Brown will do
[12:51] Speaker 3: or will not do, to go back to him one
[12:53] Speaker 3: more time? Or can he lose his job due to
[12:56] Speaker 3: injury if Elijah Brown starts tearing it up?
[13:00] Speaker 5: No, he can lose his job to injury. Like I said,
[13:03] Speaker 5: I believe that he's supposed to play if he's healthy.
[13:06] Speaker 5: But if Elijah Brown goes again and throws for 250
[13:09] Speaker 5: and three touchdowns going out to Purdue after Purdue put
[13:14] Speaker 5: the whooping on Minnesota like that, there's a possibility for
[13:17] Speaker 5: him to lose his job. It's Elijah Brown's job to take,
[13:22] Speaker 5: and I honestly believe that.
[13:25] Speaker 4: I don't disagree. I believe that Elijah Brown has the
[13:29] Speaker 4: opportunity to earn that starting job. I do think he's
[13:33] Speaker 4: going to have to do what Mario just said. He's
[13:35] Speaker 4: going to have to play extremely well in order to
[13:39] Speaker 4: make them go back on whatever commitments they've made to DeMond.
[13:43] Speaker 4: He's going to have to play extremely well. It can't
[13:45] Speaker 4: be a one-time thing. And now he's kind of mid and,
[13:48] Speaker 4: you know, maybe doing okay, slightly better. It's going to
[13:51] Speaker 4: have to be a clear, decisive, I'm the guy, I
[13:55] Speaker 4: can lead this team. And if that happens, certainly they
[13:58] Speaker 4: can walk away from, you know, any kind of commitments
[14:01] Speaker 4: they've made to DeMond. Because at the end of the day,
[14:03] Speaker 4: it's not about DeMond Williams. It's about the Husky football program.
[14:06] Speaker 2: No, no doubt.
[14:07] Speaker 3: And I just, I mean, again, whoever does this is
[14:09] Speaker 3: going to have to do it with a running game
[14:10] Speaker 3: that is just not improving. I mean, the Huskies are, look,
[14:14] Speaker 3: there's only three teams, I think, or excuse me, six teams,
[14:17] Speaker 3: I think, in the country, if I have my numbers right,
[14:19] Speaker 3: that are averaging less yards per carry than Washington. I
[14:23] Speaker 3: think we're down to, what, 135th in the nation now
[14:27] Speaker 3: in rushing offense. So, I mean, Jaden Lamar, Quade Carr
[14:30] Speaker 3: at one point, Jordan Washington at one point may come back,
[14:33] Speaker 3: but Does Jed Fish need to start Mario just getting
[14:36] Speaker 3: pass happy with Elijah Brown and start launching the ball
[14:39] Speaker 3: 50 times a game?
[14:42] Speaker 5: No, no, no, no. We need to establish some type
[14:46] Speaker 5: of running game because what's about to happen is they're
[14:49] Speaker 5: going to pin their ears back and come after this guy.
[14:52] Speaker 5: We have to have some type of balance and run
[14:55] Speaker 5: the ball. We can't have negative three or five yards rushing.
[14:59] Speaker 5: We have to have some type of attack that we're
[15:02] Speaker 5: running the ball because They'll have some type of package
[15:05] Speaker 5: for this guy. He's not going to get– I think
[15:08] Speaker 5: me and you and Greg talked about it. They felt
[15:10] Speaker 5: like Iowa was already up and they didn't come at him.
[15:13] Speaker 5: Purdue is going to come at him. They're going to
[15:15] Speaker 5: show him all kinds of looks that he hasn't seen before.
[15:18] Speaker 5: And if we can't run the ball, this young man
[15:20] Speaker 5: is going to be in a lot of trouble.
[15:22] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[15:22] Speaker 3: Well, Greg, I just don't know how they do it.
[15:24] Speaker 3: I mean, look, the sentiment is great. Let's establish the run.
[15:29] Speaker 3: Who would not want to establish the run? Everybody wants
[15:31] Speaker 3: to establish the run. How can we even possibly remotely
[15:34] Speaker 3: come close to doing that?
[15:37] Speaker 4: Well, I don't know that we're going to overnight become
[15:39] Speaker 4: a really good run team, but I think giving some
[15:42] Speaker 4: credence to what Mario said, if you don't give the
[15:45] Speaker 4: semblance of run at all, if you're unwilling to run
[15:49] Speaker 4: at all, you're going to put your quarterback in a
[15:52] Speaker 4: real precarious position because Teams aren't going to come after him.
[15:57] Speaker 4: They're going to dare him to throw the football. They're
[15:59] Speaker 4: not going to allow him to just drop back in
[16:03] Speaker 4: the pocket and go face some kind of zone and
[16:06] Speaker 4: get the ball off. They're going to go, all right,
[16:08] Speaker 4: you're not willing to run the ball. We don't have
[16:09] Speaker 4: to worry about that. you know, draw plays and that
[16:12] Speaker 4: kind of stuff. We're just going to come at you 100%. And,
[16:15] Speaker 4: you know, good luck. And our offensive line has not
[16:18] Speaker 4: played well enough in the pass protection at all this
[16:21] Speaker 4: year to think that we should be dropping back and
[16:23] Speaker 4: throwing the ball. I don't remember how many times Mario
[16:26] Speaker 4: said he threw in the second half, but if it
[16:28] Speaker 4: was 40, are we going to throw the ball 80
[16:29] Speaker 4: times in a football game? I mean, absolutely cannot throw
[16:33] Speaker 4: the ball 75, 80 times. Our offensive line expects your
[16:37] Speaker 4: quarterback to live through that. So we're going to have
[16:39] Speaker 4: to find some kind of way to run the football
[16:42] Speaker 4: enough to keep the pressure off of them, to make
[16:44] Speaker 4: it respectable that we could run so that teams can't
[16:47] Speaker 4: just come after our quarterback. But they may just decide
[16:49] Speaker 4: to do that anyway. And if they do, then that
[16:52] Speaker 4: gives you the opportunity to hit on the draw play
[16:54] Speaker 4: or trap play or something getting underneath all that blitzing
[16:57] Speaker 4: and get you running back into the secondary.
[16:59] Speaker 2: Yeah, 33.
[17:00] Speaker 3: He threw the ball 33 times in the second half.
[17:03] Speaker 3: He was 5-for-6 at halftime, and then he threw it
[17:06] Speaker 3: 33 times in the second half. So, look, I mean,
[17:09] Speaker 3: that's the question. Is Jed going to chuck it 65
[17:12] Speaker 3: times against Purdue and.
[17:13] Speaker 2: Say the hell with them?
[17:15] Speaker 3: Part of the Iowa game, obviously, is they're down 27-3
[17:18] Speaker 3: at halftime. So that's why they were throwing it as
[17:21] Speaker 3: much as they were in the second half. But Greg Lewis,
[17:24] Speaker 3: Mario Bailey with us. Normally 4 o'clock on Tuesdays, but
[17:26] Speaker 3: we're in for Ian today, the Husky Honks, and Mario,
[17:29] Speaker 3: go back to the touchdown run that Iowa had, the
[17:32] Speaker 3: long touchdown run, the 50-plus yarder by Moulton, Kamari Moulton.
[17:37] Speaker 3: You know, it was Dylan Robinson, it was RDA, it
[17:41] Speaker 3: was Isaiah Ward, all missing tackles. They did to us
[17:44] Speaker 3: on that play what we did to USC with Decker
[17:47] Speaker 3: DeGraff the week before, and it was pretty shocking because
[17:50] Speaker 3: that is not a staple of a Ryan Walters defense
[17:53] Speaker 3: at all. Are you concerned about this defense starting to
[17:56] Speaker 3: crack a little bit considering the lack of help they're
[17:58] Speaker 3: getting from the offense?
[18:01] Speaker 5: Yes, that's kind of what I talked about after the
[18:04] Speaker 5: game was over is I thought the defense got it
[18:06] Speaker 5: handed to them in every way possible. Besides the guy running,
[18:11] Speaker 5: Moulton running for 200 yards, the quarterback with the play action,
[18:15] Speaker 5: they were so concerned because they were gashing us right
[18:18] Speaker 5: down our throats that the guy looked, the quarterback looked fantastic.
[18:23] Speaker 5: He went for 14 for 19 and threw three touchdowns.
[18:27] Speaker 5: But I read somewhere like in the Big Ten in
[18:30] Speaker 5: our three games, we have almost 60 missed tackles. I
[18:34] Speaker 5: couldn't believe the figure. I thought that had to be
[18:36] Speaker 5: for an entire season. But our defense in the last
[18:39] Speaker 5: three games has gotten progressively worse. and I'm concerned because
[18:43] Speaker 5: I was looking. I think you texted us, Softie, about
[18:46] Speaker 5: the Purdue game, and I looked up, and they might
[18:50] Speaker 5: have had 300 yards rushing.
[18:51] Speaker 2: They did.
[18:51] Speaker 5: So it doesn't get any easier. Yeah, it doesn't get
[18:54] Speaker 5: any easier for us, and I think our defense is
[18:57] Speaker 5: reeling right now.
[18:58] Speaker 3: Yeah, Greg, I mean, you know, John Wilner was on
[19:00] Speaker 3: a couple segments ago and made the point that, you know,
[19:03] Speaker 3: we're underdogs to a Purdue team that didn't win a
[19:06] Speaker 3: Big Ten game for two years. And then they go
[19:08] Speaker 3: run for 300 on Minnesota. What's your DEFCON level for
[19:12] Speaker 3: this game Friday, man?
[19:15] Speaker 4: You said DEFCON 1 is the worst?
[19:18] Speaker 2: Correct.
[19:20] Speaker 4: DEFCON. 05, which is less than. 1. Right now, I'm
[19:26] Speaker 4: going to say this, and you guys can contextualize this.
[19:32] Speaker 4: We're playing and tackling like a Pac-10 team. That's what
[19:35] Speaker 4: we look like. The teams that we should be playing
[19:37] Speaker 4: are Utah State, Washington State, Boise State, and maybe right now,
[19:42] Speaker 4: Boise State would probably slap us in the mouth the
[19:45] Speaker 4: way we're playing and tackling and the toughness meter. I
[19:48] Speaker 4: told you guys a long time ago that the reason
[19:50] Speaker 4: I came to University of Washington personally was because Jim
[19:54] Speaker 4: Lambright challenged me, are you a tough guy? Do you
[19:57] Speaker 4: have a strong manhood? Because Wissies go and play for Stanford,
[20:00] Speaker 4: but tough guys play at Washington. And right now, I
[20:03] Speaker 4: can't name a bunch of guys who on our team,
[20:06] Speaker 4: in the trenches or on the defense that I would
[20:08] Speaker 4: consider our bona fide tough guys. The way we've been tackling,
[20:12] Speaker 4: I mean, 60 missed tackles, that sounds like peewee football.
[20:16] Speaker 4: I mean, I'm just being honest with you. That touchdown
[20:18] Speaker 4: run where the guy broke three tackles were three guys who,
[20:23] Speaker 4: to me, didn't look like they were interested in making
[20:25] Speaker 4: the tackle at all. He didn't do anything extra special.
[20:28] Speaker 4: He didn't you know, fake a guy out. He didn't
[20:30] Speaker 4: lower his shoulder. He just ran through guys who were
[20:32] Speaker 4: really acting like they wanted to tackle him. So my
[20:35] Speaker 4: DEFCON is as high as it can get. And if
[20:38] Speaker 4: I'm Purdue, I wouldn't throw a pass the entire game
[20:41] Speaker 4: at all. And I would blitz on every play on
[20:43] Speaker 4: offense to make sure we don't throw the football and
[20:46] Speaker 4: walk away with a win.
[20:48] Speaker 2: Yeah. Mario, you want to chime in on that?
[20:50] Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, Purdue ran for 3-0-5 against the Husky defense, and,
[20:55] Speaker 3: you know, they are young up front, but, man, I mean,
[20:58] Speaker 3: you know, Jed talked about them over the offseason. We
[21:00] Speaker 3: got a bunch of number one draft picks. We got
[21:02] Speaker 3: to play these guys, and my concern isn't even really Mario,
[21:05] Speaker 3: the 17- and 18-year-olds. It's the other guys around him,
[21:08] Speaker 3: and now X-Ray Alexander is going to be out for
[21:10] Speaker 3: a while with a foot injury.
[21:13] Speaker 5: Yeah, I kind of agree with Greg. I would go. Like,
[21:16] Speaker 5: I would just run until they could stop us, but
[21:19] Speaker 5: with a What Iowa did was they ran and then
[21:23] Speaker 5: they play actioned us to death. Like, it worked perfectly. So, yes,
[21:27] Speaker 5: if I'm Purdue and they ran all over Minnesota, we
[21:30] Speaker 5: couldn't run against Minnesota. I would run until we couldn't
[21:33] Speaker 5: run anymore. That seems to be it. And I would
[21:36] Speaker 5: blitz us. I would make our quarterback show. that he
[21:39] Speaker 5: could throw. But the problem, the biggest problem is, is
[21:42] Speaker 5: the same thing that just happened with Iowa. If we
[21:44] Speaker 5: don't start fast and we don't score, we're going to
[21:47] Speaker 5: be in the same situation in the second half or
[21:50] Speaker 5: in the second quarter as last week, except these guys
[21:53] Speaker 5: are going to come after him, and they're not going
[21:55] Speaker 5: to let him throw a total of 40 times and
[21:58] Speaker 5: no interceptions. They're coming after him, and they're going to
[22:01] Speaker 5: sack him. Yeah, no doubt.
[22:02] Speaker 3: Well, Greg, you mentioned this, I think, on the show Friday.
[22:05] Speaker 3: And you referenced the Indiana game, right, from a couple
[22:08] Speaker 3: years ago when we were doing the show from the bar.
[22:11] Speaker 3: how Jed Fish halfway through the year didn't even know
[22:13] Speaker 3: who his best offensive linemen were.
[22:14] Speaker 2: Remember that?
[22:15] Speaker 1: Right.
[22:15] Speaker 2: Well, that was okay.
[22:17] Speaker 3: That was kind of understood for year one because of
[22:20] Speaker 3: the massive turnover. But now it's year three, and we
[22:23] Speaker 3: still don't know who the best five guys are. So,
[22:27] Speaker 3: I mean, are you putting John Mills back at left tackle?
[22:30] Speaker 3: Are you putting Champ at right guard? Are you, you know,
[22:32] Speaker 3: giving Cody Green his gig back? What's your plan for
[22:35] Speaker 3: the line Friday?
[22:37] Speaker 4: Well, my plan is this. Whoever you– determined as right
[22:41] Speaker 4: now today or actually yesterday when you started your preparation
[22:45] Speaker 4: for this game you got to just select five guys
[22:48] Speaker 4: and put them in the place that you think they're
[22:50] Speaker 4: the best at and then you just got to practice
[22:53] Speaker 4: those guys to death i'd be running nine on seven
[22:56] Speaker 4: All week long. I mean, I know it's a short week,
[22:59] Speaker 4: and that's physical type of practice, but that's the only
[23:01] Speaker 4: way these guys are going to get ready. You can't,
[23:04] Speaker 4: in practice, give a guy two reps over here, two
[23:06] Speaker 4: reps over there, get the next guy, the next two reps,
[23:09] Speaker 4: and the other guy a rep, and then this guy
[23:11] Speaker 4: three reps, and then nobody's getting prepared to play the
[23:13] Speaker 4: position that they got to play next. for the entire game.
[23:16] Speaker 4: There's got to be some consistency and continuity, and you
[23:19] Speaker 4: got to get guys ready to play. And then they
[23:21] Speaker 4: got to go out there and do it. You got
[23:22] Speaker 4: to hold them accountable, and they got to have enough
[23:25] Speaker 4: pride that I am going to win my individual battles.
[23:28] Speaker 4: You can't prepare seven guys to play four different positions
[23:31] Speaker 4: and then go in a game and think you're going
[23:33] Speaker 4: to have an optimal performance. That does not work. The
[23:36] Speaker 4: one thing we always talk about in football is preparation,
[23:39] Speaker 4: being prepared to play and prepared to win. You can
[23:42] Speaker 4: only do that when you prepare that way, and guys
[23:44] Speaker 4: got to be in the spots. The guys get those reps,
[23:48] Speaker 4: and then they got to go out and perform. If
[23:49] Speaker 4: they can't get it, then the next week you got
[23:51] Speaker 4: to go with a different guy, I guess. But right now,
[23:54] Speaker 4: they got to get a certain guy prepared to play
[23:56] Speaker 4: a certain position. All this changing around is desperation, and
[24:00] Speaker 4: it gets you nowhere, and that's when you have the
[24:02] Speaker 4: results that we're having.
[24:03] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[24:04] Speaker 3: Mario, did they make a mistake giving their left tackle
[24:06] Speaker 3: job to an 18-year-old kid?
[24:11] Speaker 5: That's a tough one. I don't think so. I think,
[24:15] Speaker 5: you know, we thought the season would be better, and
[24:18] Speaker 5: I think you thought the guys around him could help
[24:20] Speaker 5: support him. And he had to show something in camp. Like,
[24:23] Speaker 5: you've got a month, two, three weeks to show yourself,
[24:27] Speaker 5: and I think he showed enough. So I'm not going
[24:30] Speaker 5: to say that. I don't feel that way.
[24:32] Speaker 2: Well, listen, I appreciate you guys doing this.
[24:34] Speaker 3: You're going to be at Tom's Watch Bar on Friday
[24:37] Speaker 3: at 1 o'clock for pregame. I'll be in West Lafayette,
[24:40] Speaker 3: and then the two of yous and Dick will have
[24:43] Speaker 3: postgame show after the game. And I thought maybe I'd
[24:45] Speaker 3: feel a little better about the situation after talking to
[24:48] Speaker 3: you guys, but I'll be honest with you, I think
[24:49] Speaker 3: I feel way worse.
[24:50] Speaker 2: So thank you for that. Good stuff. Greg, Mario, great stuff.
[24:56] Speaker 2: And we'll talk on Friday before the game, all right?
[24:59] Speaker 4: All right. Take care.
[25:00] Speaker 2: All right.
[25:01] Speaker 3: That's Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey with us on the air.
[25:04] Speaker 3: Big thanks to our friends at Delta Airlines, Clearwater Casino,
[25:08] Speaker 3: Mitsubishi Electric Heating and Air Conditioning, and Heider Construction. That's right, Dick,
[25:13] Speaker 3: for being a part of the Husky Honks every single week.
[25:16] Speaker 3: We're going to break. We'll get to our Factor Fiction
[25:18] Speaker 3: pick of the day as well. We're taking over. Ian's
[25:21] Speaker 3: not here.
[25:22] Speaker 2: We get to pick, which might not be a good thing,
[25:24] Speaker 2: by the way, next on 93.3 KJRFM.
