[0:00] Speaker 1: This is Duke of Duke Seafood, and this hour is
[0:02] Speaker 1: brought to you by Duke Seafood. Why don't you make
[0:04] Speaker 1: it a Duke's night tonight? Reserve your table today at dukesseafood.com. Now,
[0:09] Speaker 1: back to Softie and Dick on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR-FM.
[0:13] Speaker 2: You know, if this were like 1978, we'd be doing
[0:19] Speaker 2: like some crazy radio bit. You know, Dick and I
[0:21] Speaker 2: will be broadcasting from the roof of the KJR studios
[0:26] Speaker 2: in the nude. And we will not come down until
[0:29] Speaker 2: the Sounders win a game.
[0:31] Speaker 3: Okay?
[0:31] Speaker 2: Draws are fun, but we're going to stay there until
[0:34] Speaker 2: they win a game. Wasn't there a guy? God, it
[0:37] Speaker 2: was Bob Rivers in Baltimore back in the day. The
[0:40] Speaker 2: Orioles had this long losing streak. And he stayed up
[0:44] Speaker 2: there for like a month until the Orioles won a
[0:46] Speaker 2: baseball game. I don't know, Brian. Is that what you
[0:49] Speaker 2: want us to do? Dick and I will do that.
[0:51] Speaker 2: We will strip down to our drawers. We will broadcast
[0:54] Speaker 2: from the top of the cage, our studios until you
[0:56] Speaker 2: guys win a game and stop getting all these draws.
[0:59] Speaker 2: How's that sound?
[1:00] Speaker 3: Well, that's the look stripped down to your drawers is what,
[1:05] Speaker 3: you know, kind of throwing me for a loop. I
[1:06] Speaker 3: don't want to see that visual, but look, if you
[1:09] Speaker 3: guys want to make the sacrifice, if you guys want
[1:12] Speaker 3: to make the sacrifice, uh, and kick my ass into
[1:15] Speaker 3: gear and make me win a game, uh, I take
[1:18] Speaker 3: all the help I can get.
[1:19] Speaker 2: Well, look, I mean, but that's the thing is that
[1:21] Speaker 2: you're playing pretty decent soccer. You just can't find a
[1:25] Speaker 2: way to get it over the hump and get a win.
[1:28] Speaker 2: I mean, draws are good, right? Draws are good. They're
[1:30] Speaker 2: better than losses. You guys are right there in the,
[1:32] Speaker 2: in the playoff picture, but do you literally wake up
[1:35] Speaker 2: thinking that you're going to try and set the MLS
[1:37] Speaker 2: record for draws? Is that what you're doing here?
[1:41] Speaker 3: Well, No, that's not what we're trying to do, Safi,
[1:44] Speaker 3: but your point is well taken. I mean, you score
[1:48] Speaker 3: three goals on the road, you've got to figure you're
[1:52] Speaker 3: going to win. Right. You know, that's just fact. I mean,
[1:57] Speaker 3: even if you threw three goals at home, you should
[1:59] Speaker 3: be winning. So, you know, we're trying to fix things.
[2:02] Speaker 3: It seems like we got a couple goals against Chicago and,
[2:06] Speaker 3: you know, then a couple 0-0-1-1, but we could have
[2:09] Speaker 3: scored more. We could have scored the one or two
[2:12] Speaker 3: to get us over the hump. And then we scored
[2:13] Speaker 3: three against Colorado, but we gave up three pretty terrible
[2:18] Speaker 3: goals in that game.
[2:19] Speaker 2: So I love this question.
[2:20] Speaker 1: I've asked you this many times before. Was that draw
[2:23] Speaker 1: more like a win or more like a loss?
[2:28] Speaker 3: Well, that felt like a win because look, Caden Clark,
[2:32] Speaker 3: the new kid came on and he, he, he took
[2:36] Speaker 3: a ball from Albert. He knew Dick, that was such
[2:38] Speaker 3: a good soccer play. You know, he looked up before
[2:41] Speaker 3: he received the ball. He figured out where he was.
[2:44] Speaker 3: He took a really positive first touch towards the goal,
[2:49] Speaker 3: took one more look up, saw where the goalie was.
[2:52] Speaker 3: and just fired that, and it, you know, bounced right
[2:55] Speaker 3: in front of the goalkeeper, had a little dip, volley,
[2:58] Speaker 3: spin on it, and into the side netting, and it
[3:01] Speaker 3: was such a good goal.
[3:03] Speaker 2: Well, Brian Schmetz was with us, and Brian, before we
[3:05] Speaker 2: go on from Colorado, you guys had a delay by
[3:08] Speaker 2: about an hour due to thunderstorms, and there was all
[3:11] Speaker 2: kinds of games around the country, a lot of games
[3:13] Speaker 2: in college football, you know, dealt with that this weekend,
[3:16] Speaker 2: but I got to know what you guys did. How
[3:18] Speaker 2: did you spend that time waiting for that game to resume?
[3:22] Speaker 3: Well, the trainers, the fitness guys made sure that the
[3:26] Speaker 3: players stayed fueled up because we ate at 4 o'clock,
[3:31] Speaker 3: you know, for four hours before the game. So we
[3:37] Speaker 3: try and keep them sitting and then get up for
[3:39] Speaker 3: a few minutes, stretch your legs, sit back down. We
[3:42] Speaker 3: don't want them to expend too much energy, but you
[3:44] Speaker 3: can't keep them moving. And locker rooms are tight. So
[3:48] Speaker 3: we had the game on. We had Minnesota on. They
[3:51] Speaker 3: played ahead of us just to kill some time. But
[3:54] Speaker 3: it's not easy. I mean, the guys get kind of bored.
[3:57] Speaker 3: They're waiting for the game to kick off.
[3:59] Speaker 2: So you're going to need a new forward for a while.
[4:01] Speaker 4: Jovlich got a goal for you, but you're going to
[4:04] Speaker 4: miss him for the next three games due to international duty.
[4:06] Speaker 2: So what do you do at that position?
[4:09] Speaker 3: Well, Danny Masovsky scored 15 goals in the regular season
[4:13] Speaker 3: last year, 18 total. Jordan is back and in a
[4:18] Speaker 3: good mood and he's healthy. So I've got a couple
[4:21] Speaker 3: of options. Might even play both of them up together,
[4:23] Speaker 3: you know, because we got to win these games, Dick.
[4:25] Speaker 3: I mean, we got to score some goals. So I'm
[4:28] Speaker 3: going to pull out all the stops. Okay.
[4:29] Speaker 2: Well, let's, let's talk about that. So Jackson Reagan is
[4:31] Speaker 2: ready to start.
[4:32] Speaker 3: Right.
[4:33] Speaker 2: And will you get Yamar back this week? You think? Yep.
[4:37] Speaker 3: Uh, not this game softy, but, uh, Probably the next
[4:42] Speaker 3: game he'll see a cameo, and then we'll probably get
[4:46] Speaker 3: him fired up for the RSL game next week. But
[4:50] Speaker 3: he'll be on the bench. To answer your question, yes,
[4:52] Speaker 3: he'll be on the bench, and yes, Jackson is ready.
[4:55] Speaker 2: All right, perfect.
[4:56] Speaker 4: So three games in nine days, that's tough, but at
[4:58] Speaker 4: least they're at home. So do you have to rotate
[5:01] Speaker 4: the lineup a lot, or because there's no travel in there,
[5:04] Speaker 4: you just kind of go with your guns?
[5:07] Speaker 3: We're going to go with the guns, Dick. Look, there's
[5:09] Speaker 3: going to be some rotation because– You know, there's some
[5:12] Speaker 3: guys that will be on, you know, injury protocol and
[5:16] Speaker 3: stuff like that. But look, this first game is critical.
[5:20] Speaker 3: Then we see what happens on that game. Two days
[5:23] Speaker 3: rest into Saturday. I'm going to I'm going to play guys.
[5:27] Speaker 3: I mean, I got to play all the guys that
[5:29] Speaker 3: I think can help me win games and they can
[5:31] Speaker 3: rest after the three game homestand.
[5:33] Speaker 2: OK, I'm going to make a call right now. You're
[5:36] Speaker 2: going to win your next three matches. Salt Lake, Minnesota,
[5:39] Speaker 2: Kansas City. They're all at home at Lumen Field. You
[5:42] Speaker 2: guys are knocking on the door. You're right freaking there.
[5:45] Speaker 2: I can feel it. I can sense it. You're going
[5:47] Speaker 2: to win your next three matches. No more draws. No
[5:50] Speaker 2: more kissing your sister. You're going to win the next three.
[5:53] Speaker 2: Let's put a parlay on it, Dave.
[5:54] Speaker 3: All right?
[5:54] Speaker 2: Let's put a parlay on it, all three in a row.
[5:57] Speaker 2: If you can do it at the Emerald Queen, I'll
[5:58] Speaker 2: do it, man. But I think you guys are going
[6:00] Speaker 2: to win your next three. So the question is, do
[6:02] Speaker 2: you want to help me look smart, or do you
[6:04] Speaker 2: want to make me look stupid, okay? You've got to
[6:07] Speaker 2: win tomorrow, though, right? That's the first one against Real
[6:09] Speaker 2: Salt Lake. That's the first step. Let's talk about them.
[6:12] Speaker 2: They're really banged up. They've lost seven of eight, but
[6:14] Speaker 2: you've still got to think they're a little bit dangerous, right?
[6:17] Speaker 2: Talk about the game tomorrow.
[6:19] Speaker 3: They are a little bit dangerous. They've got a new
[6:22] Speaker 3: forward that's really active, really good. But, you know, they're
[6:26] Speaker 3: going to be up against it. And we've had a
[6:29] Speaker 3: pretty good record against them. But, Softie, I want to
[6:32] Speaker 3: make you look like a genius.
[6:34] Speaker 2: That's right.
[6:34] Speaker 3: I don't want to have you and Dick up on
[6:36] Speaker 3: some billboard. So we're going to do our best to
[6:40] Speaker 3: come out right on the front foot and put them
[6:42] Speaker 3: under pressure right away. And the critical thing, Softie, is
[6:46] Speaker 3: that We want to try and score the first goal,
[6:50] Speaker 3: not always playing from behind.
[6:51] Speaker 2: Hey, listen, when you win the next three, you just
[6:53] Speaker 2: remember who said it first.
[6:54] Speaker 3: All right?
[6:55] Speaker 2: Not Jackson, not Dick. It was me.
[6:57] Speaker 3: That's all you.
[6:57] Speaker 2: Dave Mahler. Okay? Don't you forget it, pal.
[7:00] Speaker 3: The expert.
[7:01] Speaker 2: That's right.
[7:02] Speaker 3: The expert.
[7:03] Speaker 4: So, Coach, in the last segment, we were talking about
[7:05] Speaker 4: this Mike McDonald versus Sean Payton little.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Spat they had. I heard that you heard about it.
[7:11] Speaker 2: So what's your take on that whole thing?
[7:13] Speaker 4: And would you take a look at Twitter if you
[7:16] Speaker 4: thought you could get some strategy from the other teams?
[7:20] Speaker 3: Well, we do. I mean, we go to the other teams.
[7:27] Speaker 3: We go to the other team's website and if they
[7:30] Speaker 3: are putting out training video, because look, in our sport,
[7:33] Speaker 3: it's maybe a little bit different. But look, you got
[7:36] Speaker 3: guys in bibs, you're playing gray versus blue or, you know,
[7:41] Speaker 3: red versus gray or, you know, whatever it is. And
[7:44] Speaker 3: you can watch the training videos and kind of get
[7:47] Speaker 3: a feel for, well, this guy was on the injury list,
[7:50] Speaker 3: but now he's playing with the gray team and the
[7:53] Speaker 3: gray team, you know, has a couple of starters on there.
[7:56] Speaker 3: So you kind of get a feel for maybe not
[7:58] Speaker 3: the tactics, but you can certainly kind of predict, well,
[8:03] Speaker 3: this guy's coming back or he's not in the team
[8:05] Speaker 3: or this guy's not starting that you thought maybe he would. So, yeah,
[8:09] Speaker 3: we do that. And I tell Jackson and all the
[8:11] Speaker 3: guys that come and watch training, they better not be–
[8:14] Speaker 3: putting out any of our training videos when we're doing tactics.
[8:17] Speaker 2: That's a big no-no.
[8:18] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:18] Speaker 2: Well, if they're dumb enough to post it and it's
[8:20] Speaker 2: sitting right there in front of your face, I mean,
[8:22] Speaker 2: why not? Why not take a peek? I mean, if
[8:24] Speaker 2: they're going to leave the bedroom door open, you want
[8:27] Speaker 2: to know what the hell's going on inside there, right?
[8:28] Speaker 2: I'm going to take a look and see what's going on, man.
[8:31] Speaker 2: So have you ever seen anything off of a social
[8:33] Speaker 2: media channel or a website that you honestly feel may
[8:38] Speaker 2: have helped you win a match?
[8:43] Speaker 3: Well, yeah, we've seen if guys were back from injury
[8:46] Speaker 3: or not playing or not in the starting 11. And
[8:49] Speaker 3: you kind of get a, you know, different. OK, so
[8:52] Speaker 3: DeAndre Edlund's not playing, you know, the RSL. So we're
[8:57] Speaker 3: going to put, you know, speedy, fast guy like Jordan
[9:01] Speaker 3: Morris against a guy who we know is the backup
[9:04] Speaker 3: to DeAndre Edlund. Yeah, there's stuff like that. I mean,
[9:07] Speaker 3: if we had fans at Sounder practices, because we don't
[9:10] Speaker 3: do it all the time, but I wouldn't be doing
[9:13] Speaker 3: tactics right in front of someone that, you know, inadvertently
[9:17] Speaker 3: might post, hey, I'm at Sounder practice. Look what the
[9:20] Speaker 3: team's doing. We wouldn't do that.
[9:22] Speaker 2: No, I love that. Well, yeah. Do you have people
[9:24] Speaker 2: that just do that for you, that work for you,
[9:26] Speaker 2: that go online and scour the Internet looking for advantages?
[9:31] Speaker 3: We've got, yeah, we've got our video guys. If they
[9:33] Speaker 3: all listen and look, Sophie, I like listening to the
[9:36] Speaker 3: opposing coaches, uh, press conferences, right? Like you can get
[9:40] Speaker 3: little bits and information about what they feel, how they
[9:44] Speaker 3: want to play, you know, what, what went wrong and
[9:46] Speaker 3: what they're going to work on next week. I always
[9:49] Speaker 3: enjoy it because, you know, I want to try and
[9:51] Speaker 3: learn as well from other coaches.
[9:52] Speaker 2: No doubt. All right, man. Listen, great stuff. And, go
[9:56] Speaker 2: get win number one tomorrow. Make me look good. All right.
[9:59] Speaker 2: Make me look smart. Win number one is tomorrow. The
[10:04] Speaker 2: winning streak starts tomorrow against Real Salt Lake, buddy. Get ready.
[10:09] Speaker 3: All right. You got it, Softy.
[10:11] Speaker 2: See you, man. See you. He sounds super-duper convinced and
[10:13] Speaker 2: fired up. We're going to break. Larry Stone will join
[10:16] Speaker 2: us next on 93.3 KJRFM.
