[0:42] Speaker 4: And Mario Bailey. We appreciate you people.
[0:44] Speaker 3: Stepping up to the plate and meeting their gigantic financial demands. Well,
[0:48] Speaker 3: my name is Softee. Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey are here.
[0:51] Speaker 3: We're talking Husky football for the next hour. And guys,
[0:53] Speaker 3: I guess the good news is, is that Washington's 2-0.
[0:57] Speaker 3: The good news is, is that the defense has given
[1:00] Speaker 3: up 12 points a game. The bad news is pretty
[1:03] Speaker 3: much everything else. You can't run the ball, you can't
[1:06] Speaker 3: throw the ball, and you really are having a hard
[1:07] Speaker 3: time kind of blocking people right.
[1:09] Speaker 4: Now as well.
[1:10] Speaker 3: So why don't we go around the room, and Greg,
[1:12] Speaker 3: we'll start with you, being the senior in the group,
[1:16] Speaker 3: and let you chime in with your thoughts on what
[1:19] Speaker 3: you've seen through eight quarters so far of Husky football.
[1:21] Speaker 5: You left one thing out. You said you can't run
[1:23] Speaker 5: the ball, throw the ball, can't catch it either.
[1:25] Speaker 4: Oh, there you go. Sorry.
[1:26] Speaker 5: Let's not leave the wide receivers.
[1:27] Speaker 4: My bad. I apologize. I apologize profusely.
[1:31] Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been... A struggle offensively, to say the least.
[1:34] Speaker 5: The Washington Huskies right now, defensively, yes, they've shut other
[1:40] Speaker 5: teams down. I think me and Mario both have said, though,
[1:44] Speaker 5: let's see what happens when the competition is elevated on
[1:47] Speaker 5: the offensive side of the other teams a little bit.
[1:49] Speaker 5: But our offense has been bad at all levels.
[1:52] Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
[1:53] Speaker 5: I watched a play on film that someone had laid
[1:56] Speaker 5: out on social media, and it was a simple run
[1:59] Speaker 5: play to the right side, and the right tackle got
[2:03] Speaker 5: hit by the defensive lineman, knocked back on his butt
[2:07] Speaker 5: four yards into the backfield. I didn't say his name.
[2:10] Speaker 5: I just said the right tackle, number 74.
[2:12] Speaker 4: I think everybody knows who you're talking about. On his
[2:15] Speaker 4: butt four yards.
[2:17] Speaker 5: That's a guy who's in his third year of starting
[2:20] Speaker 5: and playing against Utah State, so it's been bad offensive line.
[2:23] Speaker 5: I think from a running back standpoint, this is all
[2:25] Speaker 5: you need to know. The leading rusher from the running
[2:28] Speaker 5: back spot this past week was 22 yards.
[2:31] Speaker 2: Right, right.
[2:32] Speaker 5: Nine carries, 22 yards.
[2:33] Speaker 2: You do the math.
[2:34] Speaker 5: Averaging about two yards a carry right now. So I
[2:37] Speaker 5: think there's some problems. And then the wide receivers, Desmond
[2:40] Speaker 5: Roebuck is your guy who coming back was your leading
[2:44] Speaker 5: receiver coming back. Your go-to guy, the guy they're going
[2:46] Speaker 5: to move around. They're going to try to get him
[2:49] Speaker 5: in advantageous situations. Dropped two passes recently. where there was
[2:53] Speaker 5: no one within 20 yards of him. I mean, literally
[2:56] Speaker 5: one could have been a touchdown. The other one at
[2:57] Speaker 5: least is a dry, sustaining reception. And there've been other
[3:01] Speaker 5: people who have dropped passes too. We're fumbling the ball.
[3:04] Speaker 5: And I think right now, our quarterback has played a
[3:09] Speaker 5: couple of good quarters, but he hasn't been consistent. I think,
[3:12] Speaker 5: you know, the whole, when he's in the pocket, having
[3:14] Speaker 5: to throw over 300 pound, 300, seven foot lineman and
[3:18] Speaker 5: get the ball in the middle of the field and,
[3:20] Speaker 5: you know, dropping it in is a little tough. He
[3:23] Speaker 5: does better off script. So I think right now they
[3:25] Speaker 5: got to figure out who they are offensively, what their idea,
[3:27] Speaker 5: we talked a couple of years ago, what is their identity?
[3:30] Speaker 5: Back then, they might have had one play action pass.
[3:32] Speaker 5: Right now, no one knows what their identity is. No
[3:34] Speaker 5: one knows what they do well. And I could go
[3:38] Speaker 5: on and on. I don't want to take up all
[3:39] Speaker 5: the airtime. But right now, offensively, this is a bad
[3:42] Speaker 5: football team. And if they can't figure out how to
[3:45] Speaker 5: run the football by the time we get to Big
[3:47] Speaker 5: Ten play, we're going to be in a world of trouble.
[3:50] Speaker 5: And I don't see a Barry Sanders or anybody like
[3:53] Speaker 5: that coming. I don't see a Corey Dillon, a Napoleon Kaufman.
[3:57] Speaker 5: I don't see an old, fat, slow Greg Lewis coming.
[4:01] Speaker 5: So it's going to be interesting, Mario.
[4:04] Speaker 6: Yeah, it's just disappointing because Coach Fish is an offensive coordinator.
[4:08] Speaker 6: He's an offensive guy. But I will give him this excuse.
[4:12] Speaker 6: We lost our top two running backs. We lost two receivers.
[4:15] Speaker 6: And I believe Moss and Rasheed Williams got hurt this
[4:18] Speaker 6: past game. But our biggest play on the pass has
[4:21] Speaker 6: been from a flea flicker. Our offensive line, who I
[4:24] Speaker 6: still say is the most talented. I'll change it. They're
[4:27] Speaker 6: the most talented unit that we have. But we have
[4:31] Speaker 6: a true freshman and a true sophomore starting. And Landon
[4:35] Speaker 6: Hatchett is not there. So I think that's a big
[4:37] Speaker 6: loss for us right now. They can't seem to get
[4:40] Speaker 6: any rhythm and any continuity. We have a non-existent run
[4:44] Speaker 6: game right now. We can't throw down the field. We
[4:47] Speaker 6: gave up two sacks to Utah State. 33 rushes for
[4:51] Speaker 6: 107 yards is absolutely despicable.
[4:55] Speaker 5: The quarterback got the lion's share of those.
[4:58] Speaker 6: Yep, and he had one big carry, and other than that,
[5:00] Speaker 6: they were stuffing him too. We can't give up two
[5:04] Speaker 6: sacks to Utah State. We can't drop the ball. Offensively,
[5:08] Speaker 6: I don't know if we have a plan. We had
[5:10] Speaker 6: two freshman receivers come in. who I seen DeMond throw
[5:14] Speaker 6: the ball to that I thought, like, these guys must
[5:17] Speaker 6: be nice because he's going at these guys. If we
[5:20] Speaker 6: don't have a weapon at receiver and we don't get
[5:23] Speaker 6: a weapon, like Coach Gilbertson would make sure that I
[5:26] Speaker 6: got the ball, he'd call a play for me. I
[5:28] Speaker 6: don't see that being done. I see that being done
[5:31] Speaker 6: for Robach, but I don't see it being done. We
[5:33] Speaker 6: have absolutely no identity, and you're right. We're in trouble now.
[5:37] Speaker 6: We're not going to make it to the Big Ten play.
[5:39] Speaker 6: We're going to be in trouble this week for Eastern
[5:41] Speaker 6: Washington if we can't figure it out.
[5:43] Speaker 3: Well, yeah, okay, so the situation with the injuries, first
[5:46] Speaker 3: of all, and you're exactly right when you talk about
[5:49] Speaker 3: they're dealing with a short deck at certain spots, including
[5:52] Speaker 3: running back. But we also saw Quade Card and Jaden
[5:55] Speaker 3: Lamar play against Wazoo.
[5:58] Speaker 4: I didn't see much different. Did you? Slightly.
[6:01] Speaker 3: Right, but we're not sitting around thinking that, my God,
[6:04] Speaker 3: they lost two guys that would have been Big Ten
[6:07] Speaker 3: Player of the Year candidates.
[6:09] Speaker 4: They were in trouble with those guys.
[6:11] Speaker 5: Absolutely.
[6:11] Speaker 3: So is this, honestly, is this a scheme problem? Is
[6:15] Speaker 3: it a talent problem? or is it something else? I mean, look,
[6:19] Speaker 3: obviously they've got a ton of guys on the team
[6:21] Speaker 3: that are brand new. Now your number three guy is
[6:24] Speaker 3: now your number one guy. Your four guy is now
[6:26] Speaker 3: your number two guy, which means your four guy is
[6:29] Speaker 3: a breakaway from being your number one guy. Is this
[6:32] Speaker 3: a scheme problem? Is this a personnel problem? Is this
[6:35] Speaker 3: a chemistry problem? This is an offense that's got a
[6:38] Speaker 3: third-year quarterback. Remember the Louisville performance in the Sun Bowl,
[6:42] Speaker 3: how jacked up we were after that? If I would
[6:44] Speaker 3: have told you that we'd be sitting here two years
[6:47] Speaker 3: later against Wazoo and Utah State struggling to score points,
[6:52] Speaker 3: you would have said you're out of your mind.
[6:53] Speaker 4: You're out of your mind. So what happened?
[6:56] Speaker 5: Well, I think, you know, I'm trying not to give
[6:59] Speaker 5: individual people a pass because it's a team effort and
[7:02] Speaker 5: everybody has a little liability here. But I do know
[7:06] Speaker 5: this as a quarterback. You can't really show all the talents, skills,
[7:10] Speaker 5: and ability you have when there isn't enough talent around you.
[7:15] Speaker 5: When the offensive line isn't giving you perhaps the protection
[7:18] Speaker 5: that you want to get against some of these type
[7:21] Speaker 5: of teams. When the receivers, frankly, are flat out dropping
[7:25] Speaker 5: passes that are hitting them right in the hands, that
[7:27] Speaker 5: could change the dynamic. I think this past week, if
[7:30] Speaker 5: they catch all the balls, you're supposed to, they score
[7:33] Speaker 5: at least another 10 points, at least another 10, maybe more.
[7:37] Speaker 5: So I think that, and then when you don't have
[7:39] Speaker 5: anyone to take the pressure off of you right now,
[7:41] Speaker 5: we talked about it with Cam Cleland in the post game,
[7:44] Speaker 5: this defense, when they're playing against you, they're saying we're
[7:47] Speaker 5: going to make the quarterback beat you beat us. And
[7:50] Speaker 5: so we're not going to do anything by over committing
[7:54] Speaker 5: to the box. We're going to leave enough secondary guys
[7:57] Speaker 5: out there to bracket coverage, to take away any particular
[8:01] Speaker 5: player that you think might be able to do something
[8:03] Speaker 5: down the field. And we're going to make you beat us.
[8:05] Speaker 5: We're going to make you have to defeat a good defense,
[8:09] Speaker 5: a crowded secondary and all those things. As good as
[8:12] Speaker 5: DeMond is in some areas, I think the one area
[8:15] Speaker 5: where he's not great is dropping back right in the
[8:18] Speaker 5: pocket and throwing the ball on dig routes and crossing
[8:22] Speaker 5: routes and deep post kind of routes because that's where
[8:26] Speaker 5: his trajectory on the pass, because he's a shorter guy
[8:29] Speaker 5: and his line of sight is hampered.
[8:31] Speaker 3: Like the play to Chris Lawson in the end zone,
[8:33] Speaker 3: which he almost made a great catch.
[8:36] Speaker 2: That was a great catch.
[8:37] Speaker 4: That ball had way too much air on it.
[8:39] Speaker 5: It's just the way he has to throw the ball
[8:40] Speaker 5: because of some of those deficiencies. So I think right now,
[8:45] Speaker 5: when it comes to our offense, DeMond, we were excited
[8:49] Speaker 5: about him for certain reasons. He still has those talents
[8:51] Speaker 5: and abilities, but he needs other guys around him to
[8:55] Speaker 5: be able to help him because of the deficiencies that
[8:58] Speaker 5: he doesn't.
[8:58] Speaker 6: Coach is going to have to do a better job
[9:00] Speaker 6: with DeMond now. If we're lacking weapons, he's going to
[9:03] Speaker 6: have to figure something out. DeMond Williams is the guy
[9:06] Speaker 6: that we have, but we're lacking weapons. And we're also, DeMond,
[9:10] Speaker 6: he's proven it the last few years. He's not a
[9:12] Speaker 6: deep throw, deep passer. So we need to figure out
[9:16] Speaker 6: what we have. Like I said, Coach Gilbertson would call
[9:18] Speaker 6: plays for me. I don't see plays being called for guys.
[9:22] Speaker 6: I've seen Trez Davis and Jordan Clay coming there, two
[9:25] Speaker 6: freshman receivers. They came in there like they were meant
[9:27] Speaker 6: to play. And I couldn't understand it because we have
[9:30] Speaker 6: some guys that have been playing. So why aren't we
[9:33] Speaker 6: calling plays specifically for these guys? or calling plays for
[9:36] Speaker 6: DeMond to get out of the pocket.
[9:38] Speaker 4: What kind of plays? What are we talking about?
[9:40] Speaker 2: Man, it doesn't matter.
[9:42] Speaker 6: Offensive coordinator's job is how to distribute the ball to
[9:45] Speaker 6: the different weapons. These two freshmen came in there, and
[9:49] Speaker 6: I seen DeMond looking for these guys. Why isn't Robach
[9:52] Speaker 6: being called for the reverse or the flea flicker? We
[9:55] Speaker 6: don't want the flea flicker, but a play specifically for
[9:58] Speaker 6: him or any else like the our tight ends we
[10:02] Speaker 6: didn't have any plays being called it just felt like
[10:04] Speaker 6: we're just out there calling plays to call plays you
[10:07] Speaker 6: should be calling plays to get certain guys the balls
[10:10] Speaker 6: in great positions that they're used to getting the ball
[10:13] Speaker 6: in and that they can do the most work.
[10:14] Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean, look, this is obviously supposed to
[10:17] Speaker 3: be Jed Fish's specialty, right? And you mentioned the coordinator.
[10:19] Speaker 3: He is the coordinator because he's got no coordinator. People
[10:22] Speaker 3: have talked about that, if that's an issue for UW.
[10:26] Speaker 3: I don't know if it is an issue. I mean,
[10:28] Speaker 3: I could see them struggling even if Jimmy Doherty was
[10:30] Speaker 3: still here. as the offensive coordinator. I frankly happen to
[10:34] Speaker 3: think this sounds and feels to me, guys, like it's
[10:38] Speaker 3: a talent issue. The running backs just aren't good enough.
[10:41] Speaker 3: The wide receivers just aren't good enough. You lost Jonah
[10:43] Speaker 3: Coleman and you lost Denzel Boston to the NFL, and
[10:47] Speaker 3: there doesn't seem to be anybody on.
[10:49] Speaker 4: This roster that can remotely take their spot.
[10:51] Speaker 5: Yeah, some of it is bad luck, and some of it's,
[10:55] Speaker 5: you know, I don't know how I would explain it,
[10:58] Speaker 5: but if you think about Adam Muhammad was a guy
[11:01] Speaker 5: they went out, recruited, and got to commit to the
[11:03] Speaker 5: University of Washington. He's having a great year. It's just
[11:06] Speaker 5: not here. So they went out and got a guy, right,
[11:09] Speaker 5: that was great. Last year, you saw Washington have one
[11:12] Speaker 5: of the biggest runs of the year, 60-some-odd yards. So
[11:17] Speaker 5: he's a guy who you know can hit the home run,
[11:19] Speaker 5: can go the distance. He gets a freak neck injury. Nice.
[11:22] Speaker 5: in a spring ball and now he isn't available. Then
[11:26] Speaker 5: you go out and get a couple of guys in
[11:27] Speaker 5: the portal. One of them who... ends up being your
[11:30] Speaker 5: starting guy, he gets injured. So some of this is
[11:33] Speaker 5: bad luck. You know, you can't have seven great tailbacks
[11:36] Speaker 5: on the team. That's just not possible, right? The way
[11:39] Speaker 5: they spend money nowadays, you have to allocate a certain
[11:42] Speaker 5: amount of money to each position on the team. It's
[11:45] Speaker 5: like the NFL now. So you can't put $ 10 million
[11:48] Speaker 5: in your running backs. So now that they've lost guys
[11:51] Speaker 5: who they had invested in because of the injury, and
[11:54] Speaker 5: you let a guy like Adam Muhammad, who for all
[11:57] Speaker 5: intents and purposes should be the guy right now— get
[12:00] Speaker 5: away in the transfer portal, which is another complication of
[12:03] Speaker 5: college football, then, you know, there's some reasons why they
[12:06] Speaker 5: don't have the running backs that they need. And it's
[12:08] Speaker 5: not all just they didn't get it done. Some of
[12:11] Speaker 5: it's problems. Now, I will say this, and I don't
[12:14] Speaker 5: ever want to think that college coaches don't care about
[12:17] Speaker 5: their players, right?
[12:18] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[12:18] Speaker 5: So I'm not saying that. But the fact that all
[12:21] Speaker 5: of a sudden Washington might be healthy at some point
[12:23] Speaker 5: this year when we were talking earlier about he may
[12:26] Speaker 5: never play football again is kind of interesting.
[12:29] Speaker 4: You think that's out of necessity? Is that what you're
[12:32] Speaker 4: telling us?
[12:32] Speaker 5: I'm hoping it's not, but it just makes you wonder
[12:36] Speaker 5: how a kid who we weren't even talking about Two
[12:39] Speaker 5: weeks ago, weren't talking about him at all. He may
[12:42] Speaker 5: never play football again. If he does, it definitely won't
[12:44] Speaker 5: be this year. Now there's some, well, he might get
[12:47] Speaker 5: healthy this year and play, you know, again, I'm not,
[12:50] Speaker 5: I don't think the coaches would ever put a kid
[12:52] Speaker 5: in jeopardy, but I think they might've been being overprotected before.
[12:56] Speaker 2: Sure.
[12:56] Speaker 5: Now that the situation.
[12:58] Speaker 4: Well, it's possible it's totally unrelated, obviously.
[13:01] Speaker 3: I have to go back and talk to some folks
[13:03] Speaker 3: and see if Jed mentioned anything about that before the
[13:06] Speaker 3: season started. He may have mentioned something that we just
[13:08] Speaker 3: don't remember about Jordan Washington coming back. I mean, it
[13:12] Speaker 3: is a neck, and obviously you don't want to mess
[13:14] Speaker 3: around with that at all. I mean, I would assume
[13:16] Speaker 3: that's all in the doctors. Jed's like out of it, right?
[13:19] Speaker 3: The doctors tell him he's either playing or he's not playing.
[13:21] Speaker 3: But they're going to get Lamar back at some point.
[13:24] Speaker 3: They're going to get Quade Carr back at some point.
[13:26] Speaker 3: and they might get Jordan Washington back, and they might
[13:28] Speaker 3: get Christian Moss back. The problem is when you get
[13:30] Speaker 3: them back, you might be 3-6 by the time they
[13:34] Speaker 3: come back.
[13:34] Speaker 4: Guys, we're talking off the air.
[13:36] Speaker 3: The over-under on wins was 7.5, which I thought was low,
[13:40] Speaker 3: and I grabbed the over. If I'm asking you right
[13:43] Speaker 3: now to bet the over-under 7.5, that means they've got
[13:45] Speaker 3: to win five games in the Big Ten. If they
[13:48] Speaker 3: win Saturday, are you going over still with this team?
[13:51] Speaker 3: Or do you see a six or a seven win
[13:54] Speaker 3: season coming?
[13:54] Speaker 6: Well, I always think that when you play these games
[13:57] Speaker 6: in the beginning of the season, they can build confidence. Like, yes,
[14:00] Speaker 6: we've had some horrible games, but you can look at
[14:03] Speaker 6: the positive. Like our defense is playing still pretty good.
[14:06] Speaker 6: We cut down on the penalties. If we were to
[14:09] Speaker 6: go 4-0 like we're supposed to, that's going to build
[14:13] Speaker 6: some confidence. We might not see it, but it's going
[14:16] Speaker 6: to build confidence to see that your record is 4-0.
[14:19] Speaker 6: And I think you can squeeze a couple Big Ten games.
[14:22] Speaker 6: I would still go over.
[14:23] Speaker 4: Okay.
[14:24] Speaker 3: Greg?
[14:24] Speaker 5: I am, what's the name of this show? The Husky Honks.
[14:27] Speaker 5: The Husky Honks.
[14:28] Speaker 4: Not the Husky Haters.
[14:29] Speaker 5: So I am always going to see the glass half
[14:33] Speaker 5: full when it comes. Now, I'm going to be honest,
[14:35] Speaker 5: you know, because my integrity is on the line when
[14:37] Speaker 5: I talk about these games. Oh, yeah, really? That's why
[14:39] Speaker 5: people tune into this show. Well, I'm just saying. He
[14:42] Speaker 5: better be legit, man. I think we all, you know,
[14:45] Speaker 5: are going to tell the truth. I'm not going to
[14:46] Speaker 5: be Pollyanna on here is what I'm saying, right? I'm
[14:48] Speaker 5: going to tell the truth. So that's why I can
[14:49] Speaker 5: be critical. But at the same time, These are kids.
[14:54] Speaker 5: This is the beginning of the year. Things can get better.
[14:57] Speaker 5: Players can improve. And we can stop doing some of
[15:00] Speaker 5: the bonehead things. Now, dropping passes can be corrected. It's
[15:04] Speaker 5: just a focus and attention thing, right? That can be corrected.
[15:07] Speaker 5: The penalties that come at inopportune times, again, a focus
[15:11] Speaker 5: and a discipline thing. So those things can be corrected.
[15:15] Speaker 5: We get through Eastern Washington. I know you said this
[15:17] Speaker 5: could be a tough game, too, but I'm not buying that.
[15:20] Speaker 3: They're going to beat Eastern Washington. They could win by three.
[15:23] Speaker 3: They could win by two like they did Saturday. I'm
[15:26] Speaker 3: not saying they'll lose. Have you seen the line? Let
[15:28] Speaker 3: me finish my point.
[15:29] Speaker 4: 44 points.
[15:30] Speaker 3: They're not going to win.
[15:31] Speaker 4: I don't think they're going to win.
[15:34] Speaker 5: I don't buy into that. I'm not a gambler. That's crazy.
[15:37] Speaker 5: I don't know if this team right now can score
[15:39] Speaker 5: 44 points. That's what I mean. I keep it a
[15:42] Speaker 5: buck with you. I don't see him scoring 44. But
[15:44] Speaker 5: I still think this team can exceed seven wins. Yes,
[15:48] Speaker 5: it is possible. And I'm going to believe that they're
[15:51] Speaker 5: going to start figuring some things out. And they're going
[15:54] Speaker 5: to start getting, especially on the offensive line. I'm hopeful
[15:57] Speaker 5: that when Landon Hatchett gets back.
[15:59] Speaker 1: Right.
[16:00] Speaker 5: And Garion has another week under his belt or two,
[16:03] Speaker 5: that this offense line will be better and they'll play better.
[16:05] Speaker 4: Sorry, Mario.
[16:06] Speaker 3: It's 42 and a half, not 44. UW's giving 42
[16:09] Speaker 3: and a half this weekend. That means they've got to
[16:12] Speaker 3: score 43 just to cover it, right? I just talk
[16:14] Speaker 3: about wins and losses. I don't talk about the line.
[16:16] Speaker 1: I'm not.
[16:16] Speaker 3: Of gamblers but well but it just goes to show
[16:18] Speaker 3: you what vegas still thinks of washington versus a team
[16:22] Speaker 3: like eastern they think east is terrible i agree with
[16:24] Speaker 3: you i would not touch that with a 10-foot pole
[16:27] Speaker 3: uh but here's the thing that's getting to me right
[16:30] Speaker 3: now you just said you still think they're going to
[16:32] Speaker 3: win more than seven so you see an eight and
[16:34] Speaker 3: four team right so they go they go three and
[16:37] Speaker 3: oh i guess i'm a husky hunk okay hang on
[16:39] Speaker 3: they go three and oh against cupcake city yeah And
[16:42] Speaker 3: the Big Ten, they've got to go five and four.
[16:45] Speaker 3: So they've got Iowa, USC, Indiana, Oregon, Penn State, Nebraska, Minnesota,
[16:50] Speaker 3: Michigan State, Purdue. Let's live in a world for a
[16:53] Speaker 3: second where they beat Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan State, and Purdue.
[16:56] Speaker 3: Then they've got to win one. of those other games
[16:59] Speaker 3: right there to get their fifth win. If they lose
[17:02] Speaker 3: to any of those other teams that we talked about,
[17:05] Speaker 3: then of the Iowa, USC, Indiana, Oregon, Penn.
[17:08] Speaker 4: State, they're going to win two of them.
[17:09] Speaker 2: How many are at home?
[17:10] Speaker 3: They've got Iowa here. They've got Indiana here. They've got
[17:14] Speaker 3: Penn State here. Minnesota here. Those four, I believe.
[17:18] Speaker 5: Did we count Penn State and the ones that you
[17:19] Speaker 5: were already giving us? Penn State is in the iffy column.
[17:22] Speaker 5: So I'm going to take Penn State and I'm going
[17:24] Speaker 5: to take Iowa. Minnesota and Penn State. Minnesota, Penn State, Iowa.
[17:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, we got chances at those three.
[17:29] Speaker 4: All right, so they'll beat Penn State and Iowa, says Greg.
[17:32] Speaker 3: I don't know, guys. I mean, right now, I think
[17:34] Speaker 3: I'd bet the under. I gotta be honest with you.
[17:37] Speaker 3: I think I'd take the under. I just don't know
[17:39] Speaker 3: if I see them being able to run the ball enough.
[17:42] Speaker 6: To get that done. Well, the most important thing, Greg
[17:44] Speaker 6: just mentioned it, is the line. Like, we have to
[17:47] Speaker 6: get the offensive line. And I said that they were
[17:50] Speaker 6: the best unit. I still think they're the most talented.
[17:52] Speaker 6: But when you have Landon Hatchett out. John Mills is
[17:56] Speaker 6: a sophomore. Cody Green is a true freshman. That's a lot.
[18:00] Speaker 6: As a party, he's not playing the way he's been
[18:03] Speaker 6: playing the past few years. So we need offensive line
[18:06] Speaker 6: because that's how we got to the championship with DeBoer
[18:09] Speaker 6: was our offensive line. And if our offensive line can't play,
[18:12] Speaker 6: then we're going to struggle like we have been.
[18:13] Speaker 4: Speaking of, look behind you. You just missed him. He
[18:15] Speaker 4: was on TV. He's skinny. He's got to have a
[18:17] Speaker 4: cheeseburger or something, man. But let's come back and talk
[18:19] Speaker 4: about that line.
[18:19] Speaker 3: Because I kind of feel like the essence of the
[18:23] Speaker 3: Husky Honks is not just overly optimistic and positive. The
[18:27] Speaker 3: essence of the Husky Honks is unfiltered truth.
[18:31] Speaker 1: Right?
[18:32] Speaker 3: That you love the team, you're going to be worked
[18:34] Speaker 3: up when they play terribly, and you're going to be
[18:36] Speaker 3: celebrating like a madman when they play well.
[18:38] Speaker 5: Absolutely.
[18:39] Speaker 3: And I think we're kind of moving the goalposts here, guys,
[18:42] Speaker 3: a little bit. Come back and chat about that next
[18:44] Speaker 3: on 93.3 KJRFM.
[18:49] Speaker 1: Now back to the Coors Light Husky Honks on Tuesdays.
[18:52] Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. By Mitsubishi Electric
[18:57] Speaker 1: Heating and Air Conditioning.
[18:58] Speaker 4: By UA Local 32. Einer Construction.
[19:01] Speaker 1: And by Delta Airlines. On your home for the Huskies.
[19:06] Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
[19:10] Speaker 4: Rosterhaus takes the snap. Rolls out to his left at
[19:13] Speaker 4: the left hash.
[19:15] Speaker 1: Lets it fly towards the end zone in the air
[19:18] Speaker 1: jump ball.
[19:19] Speaker 3: And it is intercepted Washington has it it is Clark
[19:22] Speaker 3: to the 25 to the 30 he's got a blocker
[19:26] Speaker 3: in front at midfield he wants to take it and
[19:30] Speaker 3: he's going to go down at the 40 yard line
[19:33] Speaker 3: and it is a.
[19:34] Speaker 4: Done deal.
[19:38] Speaker 3: Somebody desperately wanted to pick six there at the end
[19:41] Speaker 3: of the game.
[19:42] Speaker 4: What'd you make of that?
[19:43] Speaker 5: Salty, I love Ray Sean Clark. You guys know this.
[19:45] Speaker 5: I know his family and everything's been one of the
[19:47] Speaker 5: guys i've been pumping up but bro it's the last
[19:51] Speaker 5: play of the game you get an interception and you're
[19:54] Speaker 5: only up by three points fall on the ground that's
[19:58] Speaker 5: right ray sean fall on the ground god that'd be
[20:01] Speaker 5: crazy you you get tackled you fumble they scoop it
[20:03] Speaker 5: up and score a touchdown or something fall on the
[20:05] Speaker 5: ground man.
[20:05] Speaker 3: You Yeah, well, you know what? Look, man, you only
[20:07] Speaker 3: get so many cracks at a pick six when you're
[20:09] Speaker 3: in college. So in some ways, I don't blame the
[20:11] Speaker 3: kid for going for it. But if he would have
[20:13] Speaker 3: messed that up, man, oh boy, that would not have
[20:16] Speaker 3: been good. Hey, big thanks to Frostbrood Coors Light, Mitsubishi
[20:19] Speaker 3: Electric Heating and Air, our friends at Delta Airlines as well.
[20:24] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[20:24] Speaker 3: We just got done in the last segment talking about
[20:26] Speaker 3: kind of what the goals are, the realistic goals are.
[20:30] Speaker 3: Over-under in Vegas was 7.5. I would probably put my
[20:34] Speaker 3: money on the under right now with this football team.
[20:38] Speaker 4: You're staying optimistic. You're saying the over, Greg.
[20:41] Speaker 3: But, guys, we started the year talking about the CFP,
[20:45] Speaker 3: and now we're debating whether or not they're going to
[20:47] Speaker 3: win eight games.
[20:48] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[20:48] Speaker 5: Right? So here's the real question. Let's say they won
[20:52] Speaker 5: eight even. Is that a step back?
[20:55] Speaker 2: Is that a disappointment?
[20:55] Speaker 4: Of course it is.
[20:56] Speaker 5: As a program.
[20:57] Speaker 4: It's a massive step back.
[20:58] Speaker 5: So you're trying to build towards getting to.
[21:00] Speaker 3: You were a nine-win football team that brought back a
[21:03] Speaker 3: third-year quarterback and one of the best defenses in the country.
[21:06] Speaker 5: So who gets held accountable for that?
[21:07] Speaker 3: Everybody does. Players and coaches. The whole thing. Look, we're
[21:11] Speaker 3: only two weeks in. We probably should save that conversation
[21:14] Speaker 3: for November. But I don't think this is just a
[21:17] Speaker 3: let's rip the coach thing anymore in college football, Mario.
[21:21] Speaker 3: If things don't go well, you've got guys making millions
[21:24] Speaker 3: of dollars a year. including your quarterback, making $ 4 million.
[21:29] Speaker 3: There are probably guys on the Seahawks that don't make
[21:31] Speaker 3: as much as DeMond Williams does.
[21:33] Speaker 4: Okay? Honestly.
[21:35] Speaker 3: Guys that play for the Mariners that don't make as
[21:37] Speaker 3: much money as DeMond Williams does. So I think we've
[21:40] Speaker 3: gone away from the, hey, they're just kids, let's not
[21:43] Speaker 3: hold them accountable thing, to this is a whole new
[21:46] Speaker 3: world now, man.
[21:47] Speaker 4: Everybody is under the Klieg light.
[21:48] Speaker 6: Well, you know, like I said at the top of
[21:50] Speaker 6: the hour, we're going to have a built-in excuse with
[21:53] Speaker 6: our top two running backs, two top receivers, one of
[21:57] Speaker 6: our starting linemen.
[21:58] Speaker 2: It's going to be injuries. That's what they're going to
[22:00] Speaker 2: say the problem is.
[22:02] Speaker 6: There is no excuse for how we're playing. We should
[22:04] Speaker 6: be playing better than that consistently. It doesn't matter. Like
[22:07] Speaker 6: I said, we have the most talented offensive unit. We're
[22:10] Speaker 6: supposed to beat up on Washington State. We're supposed to
[22:13] Speaker 6: beat up on Utah State. I guess that's why we're
[22:16] Speaker 6: 40-point favorites. I can't see us beating anybody by 40
[22:20] Speaker 6: because I can't see an offense that I've seen on
[22:23] Speaker 6: the field so far score 40 points.
[22:25] Speaker 5: You know how many points we scored in the first
[22:27] Speaker 5: quarter after two games?
[22:29] Speaker 3: Three.
[22:30] Speaker 5: We scored three points. We're getting off to terrible starts.
[22:35] Speaker 5: Most teams come out. with a script that they're going
[22:37] Speaker 5: to run their first drive. First half, second half. First half,
[22:41] Speaker 5: second half. So for us to start off every game
[22:44] Speaker 5: and not be able to get the ball down the field,
[22:47] Speaker 5: score points. And then going into the second quarter with
[22:50] Speaker 5: nothing to show for it against teams that, frankly, shouldn't
[22:53] Speaker 5: be competing with us speaks volumes about how prepared they
[22:58] Speaker 5: are when they come into the football game. It's not just, yes,
[23:02] Speaker 5: talent is one thing. But to me, if you can't
[23:04] Speaker 5: get any points on the board at home with your
[23:08] Speaker 5: crowd behind you against teams that shouldn't be able to
[23:11] Speaker 5: push you around, then how prepared are you? going into
[23:15] Speaker 5: these football games. And we've talked about getting off to
[23:17] Speaker 5: a good start over the years many, many times. Right now,
[23:21] Speaker 5: they can't get off to a good start against teams
[23:23] Speaker 5: that we should beat.
[23:23] Speaker 3: Well, and then just to follow up on your point
[23:26] Speaker 3: about the first quarter offense, they've got four drives to
[23:29] Speaker 3: start the first half and the second half.
[23:32] Speaker 4: They've run 12 plays.
[23:33] Speaker 3: And they've totaled negative 12 yards on those four drives. Literally,
[23:37] Speaker 3: they are averaging negative one yard per play on each
[23:41] Speaker 3: of their drives to start each half. So you tell me,
[23:45] Speaker 3: I mean, you've been in locker rooms at halftime. You
[23:47] Speaker 3: know the energy coming out of the building, the tunnel
[23:50] Speaker 3: to start a game. This team is coming out flat
[23:53] Speaker 3: as a freaking pancake.
[23:54] Speaker 2: And I'm saying it again. It's the offensive coordinator.
[23:57] Speaker 6: You have guys that you know that, should get the
[24:01] Speaker 6: ball in certain spots and that can do things for you,
[24:03] Speaker 6: you should be getting on the ball. We have no
[24:05] Speaker 6: direction out there. At least that's what it looks like.
[24:08] Speaker 6: Like we're not going that this is DeMond's favorite play.
[24:11] Speaker 6: He's going to roll out to the right. He's going
[24:12] Speaker 6: to throw it. We have Robach, this is his play. Williams,
[24:15] Speaker 6: this is his play. We're not doing any of that.
[24:18] Speaker 6: It's like we're just calling plays to call plays and
[24:21] Speaker 6: not calling plays for players to make plays.
[24:23] Speaker 4: But you keep saying the offensive coordinator. That's the head coach.
[24:26] Speaker 4: There is no offensive coordinator.
[24:27] Speaker 2: Well, I'm like Greg. I don't like to call anybody out.
[24:31] Speaker 3: But guys, if you look at the roster, they literally,
[24:35] Speaker 3: the words offensive coordinator do not appear. Nope.
[24:38] Speaker 4: On the coaching staff.
[24:39] Speaker 2: I'm talking about nobody.
[24:41] Speaker 4: Okay, right.
[24:43] Speaker 3: Maybe that's the problem. This team's got no coordinator. What
[24:46] Speaker 3: the hell are we doing? But the play of the
[24:48] Speaker 3: offensive line has almost been the most surprising thing, right?
[24:51] Speaker 3: Young wide receivers, young running backs, okay, whatever. If they
[24:54] Speaker 3: don't have the talent, they don't have the talent. And
[24:56] Speaker 3: I think right now there's a problem there, especially at
[25:00] Speaker 3: running back. I am massively concerned about this team's run game.
[25:03] Speaker 3: I would be, at this point, almost fairly shocked that
[25:06] Speaker 3: if they found a way to run the ball with
[25:08] Speaker 3: any consistency between now and the end of the year,
[25:11] Speaker 3: unless they get healthy and a guy comes back. The
[25:13] Speaker 3: offensive line, though, getting pushed around is stunning.
[25:18] Speaker 4: This is what we talked about over the offseason.
[25:20] Speaker 3: This was supposed to be, like you said, Mario, the
[25:22] Speaker 3: strength of this football team, and they don't look like
[25:25] Speaker 3: it right now.
[25:26] Speaker 4: I asked John Mills, left guard, I said.
[25:28] Speaker 3: Dude, just give me a take on the way you
[25:31] Speaker 3: think this line is played through two games.
[25:33] Speaker 7: Substandard, I think that we all need to be better,
[25:36] Speaker 7: starting with me for sure. I've got to make the
[25:37] Speaker 7: plays when the plays need to be needed. Definitely not
[25:42] Speaker 7: up to my standard or the group's standard. All of
[25:45] Speaker 7: us need to step up, and we will.
[25:47] Speaker 2: It's not a talent problem at all.
[25:48] Speaker 7: We just need to continue finishing late in blocks and
[25:51] Speaker 7: not doing the front correctly.
[25:52] Speaker 3: Okay, substandard. It's not a talent problem, says John Mills.
[25:56] Speaker 3: We just got to start finishing blocks. What's going on
[25:59] Speaker 3: with the offensive line, Greg?
[26:00] Speaker 5: Well, the one play that I was mentioning earlier, it's
[26:02] Speaker 5: hard to finish a block when you're laying flat on
[26:04] Speaker 5: your ass at the start of the play. So I
[26:08] Speaker 5: don't know what that has to do with it. It is,
[26:12] Speaker 5: for all intents and purposes, a talent problem when you
[26:15] Speaker 5: have three players or four starters coming back from the
[26:18] Speaker 5: previous year, and you guys are getting pushed around. You
[26:21] Speaker 5: can't score from the one-yard line. You can't get a
[26:24] Speaker 5: first down one yard out. So I think for me,
[26:27] Speaker 5: regardless of whatever play I'm running, I got to be
[26:29] Speaker 5: able to get a yard, right? And that's talent from
[26:32] Speaker 5: the offensive line and the running back spot. Like I said,
[26:34] Speaker 5: if I got hit in the backfield, that was still
[26:37] Speaker 5: a one-yard gain because I know how to fall forward
[26:39] Speaker 5: for two yards.
[26:40] Speaker 4: It's just.
[26:41] Speaker 5: All levels, though. It's the offensive line and it's the
[26:44] Speaker 5: running backs. And that's why we don't have a good
[26:46] Speaker 5: running game right now. I appreciate him saying it's unacceptable.
[26:50] Speaker 2: Accountability.
[26:51] Speaker 5: Because it is unacceptable. And what that means is you've
[26:55] Speaker 5: got to practice your butt off this week. You've got
[26:57] Speaker 5: to go out. at practice, and every rep has got
[27:00] Speaker 5: to be a competition. Every drill has got to be,
[27:03] Speaker 5: we're going to win this drill. We're going to dominate
[27:05] Speaker 5: this drill. You have to have a physical mentality. That
[27:09] Speaker 5: was my mindset before the game. I would go out
[27:11] Speaker 5: and watch the defense, and I would just stand there
[27:13] Speaker 5: and stare at them. And for me, that was me
[27:16] Speaker 5: letting you know, I'm going to be physical today. Regardless
[27:18] Speaker 5: of what you do, I'm going to be physical. So
[27:20] Speaker 5: I'm going to get that one or two or three
[27:22] Speaker 5: yards if I need it. So they got to come
[27:24] Speaker 5: out with that mentality. It can't just be, oh, we're accountable.
[27:27] Speaker 5: It's how are you going to practice? How are you
[27:29] Speaker 5: going to prepare? And how are you going to dominate
[27:31] Speaker 5: when you get out there on the field?
[27:33] Speaker 6: I'm starting to think it's just Landon Hatchett. I think
[27:36] Speaker 6: I've said this before. Offensive line, you need that guy
[27:39] Speaker 6: that's helping everybody, getting everybody together. Missing Landon Hatchett seems
[27:43] Speaker 6: to be the biggest problem out there. We got some
[27:45] Speaker 6: young guys out there. They never have played together. in
[27:49] Speaker 6: a real game until the Washington State game. So I
[27:52] Speaker 6: think that's the problem. But we have to get it
[27:54] Speaker 6: together because the offensive line, again, is going to be
[27:57] Speaker 6: the people that take us to the next level. And
[28:00] Speaker 6: right now, it doesn't look like for you that we
[28:02] Speaker 6: can win eight games. So the offensive line will be
[28:05] Speaker 6: the reason that we do win eight games when Landon
[28:08] Speaker 6: Hatcher gets back on the lineup.
[28:09] Speaker 3: I talked to Chris Peterson a couple weeks ago and
[28:12] Speaker 3: just unabated just mentioned what you said. He said they
[28:14] Speaker 3: got to get Landon back. I mean, he's the key
[28:16] Speaker 3: to the whole thing. So if he is the key...
[28:19] Speaker 3: Which I'm not convinced he is. I think they're better
[28:22] Speaker 3: with him, but I think that's a lot of expectation
[28:24] Speaker 3: that all of a sudden things are going to look
[28:26] Speaker 3: dramatically different in the run game with Landon Hatchett out there.
[28:30] Speaker 3: If he is, then whatever he's making, you better triple
[28:33] Speaker 3: it for crying out loud.
[28:34] Speaker 6: Well, you're going to see the difference when the guy's
[28:37] Speaker 6: out there and he's been in situations and he can
[28:39] Speaker 6: tell guys who to get, where to go.
[28:41] Speaker 2: I think that makes a big difference. Who's their best back?
[28:44] Speaker 4: Is it Bonner?
[28:45] Speaker 2: Bonner's our best back right now.
[28:47] Speaker 4: The Cooley?
[28:48] Speaker 2: No, Bonner's our best back right now. Bonner.
[28:50] Speaker 4: Well, they're going with Bonner.
[28:51] Speaker 5: You like Bonner? I mean, I like it better than
[28:55] Speaker 5: the other guy, yes. I mean, Cooley, you know, no
[29:01] Speaker 5: disrespect to the young man. He hasn't played any football
[29:03] Speaker 5: in the last two and a half years, really.
[29:05] Speaker 4: Very little.
[29:06] Speaker 5: And he doesn't look explosive. He doesn't look confident. He
[29:08] Speaker 5: doesn't look sure of himself. And it just might be,
[29:12] Speaker 5: you know, that the time has passed him by. Bonner's
[29:15] Speaker 5: a kid. He's a freshman. And we don't always start
[29:19] Speaker 5: off on fire as a freshman. He could still have
[29:21] Speaker 5: a great career ahead of him. And I'm not taking
[29:23] Speaker 5: that away from him. But I think right now we
[29:27] Speaker 5: saw him put the ball on the ground, which can happen.
[29:29] Speaker 5: We saw him. I believe I saw him drop a
[29:31] Speaker 5: pass as well. So I think this is a kid
[29:35] Speaker 5: who has got to get better in a hurry because
[29:38] Speaker 5: there's nobody else. If there's nobody else, you've got to
[29:42] Speaker 5: be the guy. And is he ready for that load?
[29:45] Speaker 5: I can't say that he is. That would be, you know,
[29:47] Speaker 5: a hard thing for a kid who's just out of
[29:50] Speaker 5: high school and, you know, now has to put the
[29:53] Speaker 5: weight of the team on his back as the main
[29:57] Speaker 5: runner with the offensive line not playing that well. That's
[29:59] Speaker 5: a lot to ask.
[30:00] Speaker 6: You guys keep saying we got to run the ball
[30:01] Speaker 6: in the Big Ten. I keep saying that Coach Fish
[30:04] Speaker 6: really hasn't ran the ball well in the Big Ten.
[30:06] Speaker 6: Jonah Coleman didn't do much in the Big Ten. Jonah's
[30:09] Speaker 6: yards would come in those first few games. And once
[30:11] Speaker 6: the Big Ten came, like I said, He barely had
[30:14] Speaker 6: a 20-carry game. It's not like we were running the ball.
[30:17] Speaker 6: Coach Fish wants to be cute and pass that ball.
[30:20] Speaker 6: It's not like we're a run team. You have to
[30:22] Speaker 6: run the ball in the Big Ten, but we haven't
[30:24] Speaker 6: necessarily been successful.
[30:25] Speaker 4: Running the ball.
[30:26] Speaker 5: You've got to have a run threat, though, to do that, sir.
[30:28] Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay.
[30:28] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[30:29] Speaker 3: I mean, you're right about what Jonah Coleman did in
[30:31] Speaker 3: the Big Ten last year.
[30:33] Speaker 4: Not much.
[30:34] Speaker 3: I mean, he was 27th, guys. But you've got to
[30:37] Speaker 3: add the other running back into that as well. Right,
[30:38] Speaker 3: but I'm saying Jonah Coleman, though.
[30:41] Speaker 2: Well, add them both.
[30:41] Speaker 4: Jonah Coleman. Adam Muhammad.
[30:44] Speaker 3: You can add Muhammad. You can add Jordan Washington. But
[30:48] Speaker 3: for Jonah Coleman to be 27th? That's not good enough.
[30:53] Speaker 5: They don't run one guy that many times. DeMond Williams
[30:55] Speaker 5: was your leading rusher.
[30:56] Speaker 4: Greg, yeah, but that's 27th, not 17th. Okay. 27th, man.
[31:00] Speaker 4: What was our run game, though? Do you get me?
[31:02] Speaker 3: 27th? I'm just saying you have to have an average
[31:04] Speaker 3: run game if you're going to throw it. All right,
[31:06] Speaker 3: let's get a break. Should we be at all concerned
[31:09] Speaker 3: about Eastern?
[31:10] Speaker 4: I mean, honestly. Coming up on Saturday. Next on 93.3 KJRFM.
[31:18] Speaker 1: Now back to the Coors Light Husky Honks on Tuesdays.
[31:21] Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. By Mitsubishi Electric
[31:25] Speaker 1: Heating and Air Conditioning. By UA Local 32. Einer Construction.
[31:30] Speaker 1: And by Delta Airlines. On your home for the Huskies.
[31:34] Speaker 4: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Shotgun snap onto Sano, pushes forward,
[31:41] Speaker 4: and it is a Washington touchdown.
[31:43] Speaker 1: Sal the siren, the dogs on the board.
[31:46] Speaker 7: And the first touchdown in the career of the true freshman.
[31:53] Speaker 4: All right, there it is, Elyse Woodward.
[31:55] Speaker 3: You'll hear more of her on Saturday, 4-15 kickoff, I
[31:59] Speaker 3: believe it is, against Eastern Washington. Before we continue and
[32:04] Speaker 3: chat about the opponent this weekend, it's time for the
[32:06] Speaker 3: defensive player of the game, brought to you by Mitsubishi
[32:09] Speaker 3: Heating and Air. Time for the Bring the Hyperheat defensive
[32:12] Speaker 3: player of the game, powered by Mitsubishi.
[32:14] Speaker 4: Heating and Air Conditioning.
[32:15] Speaker 3: Find your local Home Comfort MVP on ductlesshomecomfort.com.
[32:21] Speaker 4: I don't know, is it even a debate about who the...
[32:23] Speaker 4: I don't think so.
[32:24] Speaker 2: That's his best game.
[32:26] Speaker 4: We all agree it's Jacob Manu, right, from Saturday?
[32:28] Speaker 1: No?
[32:28] Speaker 4: Okay. Jacob Manu week one, but for week two it was?
[32:32] Speaker 2: Old Faithful.
[32:33] Speaker 4: Old Faithful.
[32:34] Speaker 5: McLaughlin.
[32:34] Speaker 4: A.K.A. Alex McLaughlin.
[32:36] Speaker 5: He had a great game.
[32:37] Speaker 4: Where would they be without this guy? Is there any
[32:39] Speaker 4: concern about the defense, guys?
[32:40] Speaker 3: Because we've been talking about the offense for the first
[32:42] Speaker 3: half hour because that's where the question marks are, right?
[32:44] Speaker 3: Defense is playing well, but let's face it, we expected
[32:48] Speaker 3: them to play well, especially against these two teams that
[32:52] Speaker 3: we saw. So, are we seeing a defense that can
[32:55] Speaker 3: hang no matter who they play once Big Ten play starts?
[32:59] Speaker 6: Our defense has been consistent and we could have easily
[33:02] Speaker 6: shut when they gave up a big play this past game,
[33:04] Speaker 6: but we could have shut both teams out. I think
[33:06] Speaker 6: our defense has been solid and impressive, and they've created
[33:10] Speaker 6: three turnovers for both games. We just have to see
[33:13] Speaker 6: them play against some talent, I guess.
[33:15] Speaker 5: Yeah, if you want me to nitpick, I'll say this.
[33:18] Speaker 5: In a crucial moment in a football game, you can't
[33:21] Speaker 5: give the other team an opportunity to catch a ball
[33:24] Speaker 5: 40 yards down the field and put themselves in field
[33:27] Speaker 5: goal range. Thankfully, the receiver... from Utah State dropped that pass.
[33:32] Speaker 5: Because had he caught that, I think they're in field
[33:35] Speaker 5: goal range and they're close to it. They can maybe
[33:37] Speaker 5: get another five or seven yards with a quick out
[33:39] Speaker 5: or something like that. So, you know, giving up the
[33:42] Speaker 5: big play has happened a couple of times. And so
[33:45] Speaker 5: I think that's the one thing that they can shore
[33:47] Speaker 5: up a little bit, especially in those critical moments. And
[33:50] Speaker 5: other than that, if there's some injuries in the secondary,
[33:52] Speaker 5: which we're starting to get a little bit, you know,
[33:54] Speaker 5: making sure you got enough guys to.
[33:56] Speaker 3: Well, and you've got a guy in Nate Bell, who
[33:59] Speaker 3: you'll see Saturday, who likes to run. He is Eastern's
[34:02] Speaker 3: leading rusher. He's kind of like DeMond Williams in that regard.
[34:05] Speaker 3: He's run for 159 yards on 40 carries and four
[34:09] Speaker 3: touchdowns already. In the first three games of the year,
[34:12] Speaker 3: we can argue about who they've played and how good
[34:14] Speaker 3: they are, and we're talking about Northern Arizona and Northern
[34:17] Speaker 3: Iowa teams.
[34:18] Speaker 4: And South Dakota, but they've got a football team.
[34:21] Speaker 3: I guarantee you Eastern's talking about, hey, let's go to
[34:24] Speaker 3: Seattle and let's do what that 2014 team of Vernon
[34:27] Speaker 3: Adams and Cooper Cup could not do.
[34:29] Speaker 4: Let's win.
[34:30] Speaker 5: That's what I was going to say. As long as
[34:31] Speaker 5: they ain't got Vernon Adams and Cooper Cup, I ain't
[34:34] Speaker 5: worried about them.
[34:35] Speaker 2: You're good.
[34:35] Speaker 5: I saw Cooper Cup catch about 300 yards with the passes.
[34:40] Speaker 3: You got no concerns about a team that got pushed
[34:42] Speaker 3: around by Wazoo and a team that beat Utah State
[34:45] Speaker 3: by two?
[34:46] Speaker 5: I have no concern.
[34:47] Speaker 7: Okay.
[34:48] Speaker 1: Mario?
[34:49] Speaker 6: I have no concerns about us winning the game. I
[34:51] Speaker 6: have concerns about us getting better. Like I said, you
[34:54] Speaker 6: want to be consistent. In these games, you want to
[34:56] Speaker 6: take the opportunity to get better each week. And I
[34:59] Speaker 6: want our offensive line, our offensive players, everybody, DeMond, our defense,
[35:03] Speaker 6: just to get better each week. Don't look at these
[35:05] Speaker 6: games as, don't look at the line and don't read
[35:08] Speaker 6: the paper. Don't look online and see any of that. Like,
[35:12] Speaker 6: get better each week because the Big Ten games are
[35:14] Speaker 6: coming up.
[35:15] Speaker 5: I heard a little birdie told me that Cooper Cup
[35:18] Speaker 5: is going to be at the game sitting in the
[35:20] Speaker 5: Don James Center. Is he going to have on Eastern
[35:23] Speaker 5: Washington paraphernalia and rooting for the Eastern Washington Eagles in
[35:28] Speaker 5: the Don James Center?
[35:29] Speaker 3: So when the Hawks are in Arizona getting ready to
[35:32] Speaker 3: play the Cardinals the next day, Cooper Cup will be
[35:35] Speaker 3: here watching the Huskies?
[35:37] Speaker 2: His family will.
[35:38] Speaker 4: Is that what you're telling me?
[35:39] Speaker 2: I'm just telling you.
[35:40] Speaker 4: You're trying to make it funny. I'm just trying to
[35:42] Speaker 4: make it funny.
[35:43] Speaker 6: His family will be here wearing some Eastern Washington gear.
[35:46] Speaker 3: But here's the thing, right? Like, if you destroy Eastern,
[35:49] Speaker 3: you're supposed to destroy Eastern.
[35:51] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[35:51] Speaker 4: We need to see some semblance of a running game.
[35:54] Speaker 3: We need to see the Huskies get off to a
[35:56] Speaker 3: fast start in the first half and the second half
[35:59] Speaker 3: when they come out of the locker room. We want
[36:01] Speaker 3: to see them do what they haven't done because it's
[36:04] Speaker 3: not like they can get a lot of wins out of.
[36:06] Speaker 4: This thing or a lot of positives out of it,
[36:09] Speaker 4: I think.
[36:09] Speaker 3: But you can sure as hell take some negatives.
[36:12] Speaker 4: Guys, if they can't run the ball Saturday versus.
[36:14] Speaker 3: Eastern Washington, what makes us think they can do it
[36:17] Speaker 3: against USC or Michigan State or Nebraska or Penn State
[36:22] Speaker 3: or Oregon or Indiana? You want to see a red flag?
[36:25] Speaker 3: Go have a hard time running the ball Saturday against Eastern.
[36:28] Speaker 3: I'll show you a red flag.
[36:29] Speaker 5: I don't disagree with anything you're saying. And I'll say this,
[36:32] Speaker 5: we've talked about the offense line to death, so I
[36:34] Speaker 5: don't want to Go there much more. Let's hope they
[36:37] Speaker 5: play better and they don't get knocked off the ball.
[36:40] Speaker 5: But I do believe that this is an opportunity for
[36:43] Speaker 5: Bonner to actually show that he's the guy that they recruited.
[36:47] Speaker 5: He's the number seven guy. He's a four-star kid. He's
[36:51] Speaker 5: a person who we can be excited about over the
[36:53] Speaker 5: next several years because you're playing against an Eastern Washington defense.
[36:56] Speaker 5: that your offensive line should be able to dominate. Now
[36:59] Speaker 5: you've got to go out and make plays. Not just
[37:01] Speaker 5: get what they get you, but make somebody miss. Run
[37:04] Speaker 5: somebody over. Get around somebody. Hit the sideline and outrun
[37:07] Speaker 5: some guys. He's got to show by five, six yards
[37:11] Speaker 5: of carry this week that he's the guy.
[37:14] Speaker 6: I want to see the offensive coordinator call the first
[37:16] Speaker 6: ten plays and go down the field and give each
[37:20] Speaker 6: weapon the ball and figure out how to score on
[37:23] Speaker 6: the first drive of the game.
[37:25] Speaker 4: We don't have an offensive coordinator. Why do you keep
[37:28] Speaker 4: saying that?
[37:28] Speaker 2: You understood me.
[37:29] Speaker 4: Now you're saying it just to drive us nuts.
[37:30] Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
[37:31] Speaker 4: Why don't you just say his name? His name is
[37:34] Speaker 4: Jed Fish.
[37:35] Speaker 6: I want to see Coach call those first 10 plays
[37:37] Speaker 6: and get us a touchdown on the first drive.
[37:40] Speaker 4: All right. Well, we'll be on the air. I think
[37:41] Speaker 4: we're going on the air at noon, by the way.
[37:43] Speaker 3: The extra 15 minutes will be reflected in your next paycheck,
[37:46] Speaker 3: by the way.
[37:46] Speaker 4: So keep an eye out for that. UW Eastern Saturday.
[37:49] Speaker 4: We'll see you then.
[37:50] Speaker 2: Go Dawgs.
