[1:07] Speaker 2: Our friend, Super Bowl champion head coach Mike Holmgren. How
[1:10] Speaker 2: are you, man?
[1:11] Speaker 4: Hey, I'm good. It's good. It really is good seeing
[1:13] Speaker 4: you guys, too. It's been too long.
[1:16] Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about it. How was the river cruise,
[1:18] Speaker 2: by the way?
[1:18] Speaker 4: It was good. It was good. I didn't eat too much.
[1:23] Speaker 2: Bad idea.
[1:24] Speaker 4: Well, the southern food, you know, is spicy and They
[1:27] Speaker 4: fry a lot. The chicken's good, though. Yeah, yeah.
[1:30] Speaker 5: Oh, jeez.
[1:30] Speaker 3: You still get recognized, by the way, across the country?
[1:32] Speaker 4: Yeah, it happened. It happened on the boat, and I was, yeah.
[1:37] Speaker 4: I love it.
[1:38] Speaker 2: Good.
[1:38] Speaker 3: Don't act like you don't love it, by the way.
[1:40] Speaker 2: All right?
[1:41] Speaker 4: Well, there are times.
[1:42] Speaker 2: There are times.
[1:42] Speaker 4: If I'm in the middle of eating dinner, and someone
[1:45] Speaker 4: wants to grab the food off my fork.
[1:47] Speaker 2: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
[1:50] Speaker 3: Well, somebody will think you're Wilford Brimley at some point.
[1:52] Speaker 3: You'll say, what the hell's going on here? Well, there's
[1:54] Speaker 3: a lot to catch up on. I mean, let's just get,
[1:56] Speaker 3: first of all, your thoughts overall on this 3-3 start
[1:59] Speaker 3: by the Seahawks. Remember Dick and I talking over the
[2:01] Speaker 3: offseason that, man, this schedule is not easy, and they
[2:04] Speaker 3: could easily lose as many games in the first eight
[2:06] Speaker 3: games as they lost all last year, and we were wrong.
[2:09] Speaker 2: It happened in the first six games of the year.
[2:11] Speaker 3: So the view from 40,000 feet, what's going on here
[2:14] Speaker 3: in Seattle, man?
[2:14] Speaker 4: Well, I know it's disappointing to Mike. It's disappointing to...
[2:19] Speaker 4: the fans because they really have, I would say you
[2:22] Speaker 4: break it down. They really have a good defense. Okay.
[2:25] Speaker 4: There you go there now. So complimentary offense and they
[2:29] Speaker 4: would be undefeated. I mean, it wouldn't be, it'd be
[2:33] Speaker 4: the same as a lot of the teams in the league.
[2:36] Speaker 4: So I think that they miscalculated in my opinion, uh,
[2:42] Speaker 4: on their offensive line, uh, You know, Dick might not
[2:47] Speaker 4: agree with me. I forget how we, because we rarely
[2:49] Speaker 4: agree on these things. But, you know, I would have
[2:54] Speaker 4: tried to keep Walker. Somehow, someway, I would have tried
[2:56] Speaker 4: to keep him. I thought he was, he showed up
[3:00] Speaker 4: last season at the end when they gave him the
[3:03] Speaker 4: ball a lot.
[3:04] Speaker 1: Right.
[3:04] Speaker 4: And now look at him. So that's another piece. The
[3:08] Speaker 4: tight ends not getting involved enough in the passing game,
[3:10] Speaker 4: in my opinion, and the wide receivers, they got one guy.
[3:14] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[3:14] Speaker 4: Right now. They've got one guy. And so playing offense,
[3:18] Speaker 4: and then I'm not even talking about Sam yet, but,
[3:22] Speaker 4: you know, he's turned the ball over too much.
[3:26] Speaker 5: Why?
[3:27] Speaker 4: I'd have to study film and really look at it hard,
[3:29] Speaker 4: but that would be my number one thing to do
[3:32] Speaker 4: if I was still coaching.
[3:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
[3:34] Speaker 6: Well, I agree with you on what I want to
[3:35] Speaker 6: do with Walker is what you wanted to do with Hutch,
[3:38] Speaker 6: but you got the rug pulled out from underneath.
[3:41] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[3:41] Speaker 6: So I wanted to franchise him for that one year.
[3:44] Speaker 6: I think it would have been $ 14 million, something like that,
[3:46] Speaker 6: on the franchise tag, but that didn't happen. Is it
[3:48] Speaker 6: too early to say it was a mistake? Because Kansas City,
[3:52] Speaker 6: your guy Andy is running this guy into the ground,
[3:55] Speaker 6: and he's never been that durable when he was in Seattle.
[3:58] Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we'll have a better idea as we
[4:01] Speaker 4: go into this season, because you're right. The number of
[4:03] Speaker 4: touches and carries now is way more than he ever
[4:07] Speaker 4: did here. But, no, I think... Yeah, I think I
[4:14] Speaker 4: wasn't for it. I think right now they're struggling because
[4:17] Speaker 4: of injury.
[4:18] Speaker 1: Right.
[4:19] Speaker 4: And the number one pick, I really don't know yet
[4:24] Speaker 4: about him because I haven't seen enough of him. Right.
[4:27] Speaker 4: But I have a lot of confidence in John's ability
[4:30] Speaker 4: to pick guys. I really do. And if he picked
[4:32] Speaker 4: them number one, they see something in there that should
[4:36] Speaker 4: help the team. But they don't have it now.
[4:38] Speaker 5: Right.
[4:39] Speaker 4: And so that's hurting him.
[4:40] Speaker 3: Well, let's go back to Sam for a second because
[4:42] Speaker 3: I want to talk to Collinsworth about this. Not that
[4:44] Speaker 3: I would ever tell you what to do, but I
[4:46] Speaker 3: want you to ask him when he comes on the
[4:47] Speaker 3: air about how much slack he gets. He's thrown seven
[4:51] Speaker 3: picks in four games. He's on pace to throw 20.
[4:55] Speaker 3: He's also getting sacked a ton, 13 times the last three,
[4:58] Speaker 3: 10 the last two.
[4:58] Speaker 2: How many of those are on Sam? We can discuss, obviously.
[5:01] Speaker 3: How much rope would Sam Darnold get if he was
[5:05] Speaker 3: playing for you and these interceptions continued?
[5:08] Speaker 4: Well, you'd have to fix it. I mean, I don't
[5:11] Speaker 4: think you'd yank him.
[5:13] Speaker 2: I would.
[5:13] Speaker 4: That'd be hard.
[5:14] Speaker 2: Like, at all?
[5:15] Speaker 5: No.
[5:15] Speaker 2: He's your guy?
[5:16] Speaker 4: Yeah. He's my guy. And he has to know that
[5:19] Speaker 4: I've got his back. That's where we start. Now, let's
[5:23] Speaker 4: fix this. Why is this happening?
[5:25] Speaker 2: Right.
[5:26] Speaker 4: You know, you won the Super Bowl last year. You
[5:27] Speaker 4: had a wonderful year. The year before, you were really
[5:29] Speaker 4: great in Minnesota. Why is this happening now with us?
[5:34] Speaker 4: And fix it. And I think it's fixable. I really
[5:36] Speaker 4: think it's fixable. But You have to have that down
[5:39] Speaker 4: and dirty talk with him. I would not. Because if
[5:43] Speaker 4: you pull him, if you pull him, Dave, to put
[5:48] Speaker 4: him back in, it's hard.
[5:51] Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
[5:52] Speaker 4: And not only on him, it'll be hard on Drew Locke,
[5:54] Speaker 4: the fans. It'll just be hard. Yeah.
[5:56] Speaker 3: You feel like if you pull him that you're going
[5:58] Speaker 3: to give Drew Locke a chance to keep the job.
[6:00] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[6:00] Speaker 2: That's it.
[6:00] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[6:01] Speaker 4: You know, I went through nothing quite like this but
[6:04] Speaker 4: with Trent and Matt. Trent Dilfer and Matt, when they
[6:08] Speaker 4: got hurt, we were jockeying them back and forth. Matt
[6:11] Speaker 4: was the starter. Then I had to pull him, and
[6:14] Speaker 4: Trent came in and played well. He was going to
[6:16] Speaker 4: be the starter the next year. Matt was upset. Then
[6:20] Speaker 4: he gets hurt. Matt has to come back in. That's
[6:24] Speaker 4: a bad situation to get into. But you've got to
[6:28] Speaker 4: fight your way out of it, and that's what they
[6:29] Speaker 4: have to do.
[6:30] Speaker 6: What about an in-game yanking? Let's say he throws two
[6:33] Speaker 6: interceptions in the first quarter of a game. He's still
[6:36] Speaker 6: your starter, but come sit down.
[6:39] Speaker 2: Would you do that?
[6:40] Speaker 4: I might punch him in the helmet. But that's hard
[6:50] Speaker 4: to do. I don't think I would do that. I
[6:52] Speaker 4: don't think I'd do that.
[6:53] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[6:55] Speaker 3: Well, let's go back to the canine thing a second
[6:58] Speaker 3: because this is really interesting, man, the timing on this.
[7:00] Speaker 3: I mean, how often do you have a guy– leave
[7:03] Speaker 3: as a Super Bowl MVP in free agency.
[7:05] Speaker 2: His old team is struggling in his old position.
[7:08] Speaker 3: He's kicking ass with his new team, and now they
[7:10] Speaker 3: play each other in week seven on national TV on
[7:15] Speaker 3: Sunday Night Football.
[7:17] Speaker 4: You couldn't write a better story.
[7:20] Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
[7:21] Speaker 3: I mean, it's just such a huge angle on this game. So,
[7:23] Speaker 3: first of all, I think we've asked you before, I'll
[7:25] Speaker 3: ask you again, with Andy, and Dick mentioned this, he's
[7:29] Speaker 3: on pace for 400 touches. That's Bijon, Derrick Henry type stuff, right?
[7:35] Speaker 3: You think Andy eventually is going to back off the
[7:37] Speaker 3: gas a little bit with that?
[7:38] Speaker 4: I think so.
[7:39] Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah. Okay.
[7:40] Speaker 4: I think so. I think he's monitoring it right now.
[7:45] Speaker 4: I think depending on how Walker feels during the week
[7:49] Speaker 4: and what's, you know, how, but he's not slowing down.
[7:56] Speaker 2: Not yet, yeah.
[7:56] Speaker 4: You know, and so, but I think, yeah, I think,
[8:00] Speaker 4: And Andy knows that.
[8:01] Speaker 2: You know, if.
[8:04] Speaker 6: You wear.
[8:05] Speaker 4: Backs wear out. As the season goes along, you can
[8:08] Speaker 4: almost see it.
[8:09] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[8:10] Speaker 4: If they're carrying the ball that much.
[8:11] Speaker 2: Right.
[8:12] Speaker 4: You know, and... But, heck, he's winning games. They're undefeated.
[8:17] Speaker 4: He's been a big part of it, so he's going
[8:19] Speaker 4: to stay with them.
[8:20] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[8:20] Speaker 2: And you would have paid him, right? You would have
[8:21] Speaker 2: maybe franchised him, like Dick said, or.
[8:24] Speaker 4: I think I would have.
[8:24] Speaker 3: Met the market and gave him his 15, 14 million
[8:27] Speaker 3: bucks a year and kept him.
[8:28] Speaker 4: I think I would have.
[8:29] Speaker 5: Yeah. Because.
[8:30] Speaker 4: I think they made a decision. I don't know this,
[8:34] Speaker 4: but I think they made a decision between Shahid and
[8:37] Speaker 4: Walker because they paid one, you know. But they had
[8:41] Speaker 4: to pay, you know, Enjigma and the corner.
[8:47] Speaker 2: Witherspoon, right? Witherspoon.
[8:48] Speaker 4: Yep. I understand all that, you know. But, no. As
[8:55] Speaker 4: the famous quote goes, That I used to tell the
[8:58] Speaker 4: money people, it's not your money. You know? Yeah. It's
[9:04] Speaker 4: Paul Allen's money.
[9:06] Speaker 5: Right.
[9:06] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[9:06] Speaker 4: And he'd be happy.
[9:07] Speaker 2: No doubt. No question.
[9:09] Speaker 6: Well, Coach, from our standpoint, running the ball, you get
[9:12] Speaker 6: Charbonnet back.
[9:13] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[9:14] Speaker 4: Sunday night. Yeah.
[9:14] Speaker 6: Now, normally, coming off an injury like that. You'd kind
[9:19] Speaker 6: of wade him into the pool a little bit.
[9:21] Speaker 2: Yes. But we have a disaster at running.
[9:23] Speaker 4: Back right now.
[9:24] Speaker 6: So do you throw him into the deep end and
[9:25] Speaker 6: say you're getting 20 carries on Sunday?
[9:27] Speaker 4: No, I don't think you can do that, Dick.
[9:29] Speaker 2: Okay.
[9:30] Speaker 4: As much as you might want to do that, I
[9:34] Speaker 4: think to your point, I think it's a very good one.
[9:36] Speaker 4: He's coming off a very serious injury. And he hasn't played.
[9:40] Speaker 4: He hasn't played football for a while.
[9:43] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[9:44] Speaker 4: They're going to have to ease him back into it,
[9:47] Speaker 4: I think. Okay. Now, you know, because otherwise, I think
[9:54] Speaker 4: the challenge, you run the risk of maybe him getting
[9:57] Speaker 4: hurt again.
[9:57] Speaker 2: Right, right, right.
[9:58] Speaker 4: You know?
[9:58] Speaker 2: Right.
[10:00] Speaker 4: You have a holdout in training camp? Yeah. And all
[10:02] Speaker 4: of a sudden he shows up for the first game,
[10:04] Speaker 4: I'm ready. And then he gets hurt.
[10:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
[10:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, and plus that's not him. That's not who he was, right?
[10:10] Speaker 3: That's not his workload. He wasn't doing that when he
[10:13] Speaker 3: was here. complimenting kenny walker but mike i'm wondering mike
[10:17] Speaker 3: holmgren's with us courtesy of our friends at venue kings
[10:19] Speaker 3: by the way you need tickets for anything sporting events
[10:22] Speaker 3: concerts whatever uh venue kings.com use code mike at checkout
[10:26] Speaker 3: for a discount always at venue kings.com i'm wondering if
[10:29] Speaker 3: this will get to a point and we'll never i
[10:32] Speaker 3: think hear about it publicly because that's not how this
[10:34] Speaker 3: team acts where the defense will start to get a
[10:37] Speaker 3: little bit for lack of a better word worn out
[10:40] Speaker 3: by what's happening on the offensive side of the ball.
[10:42] Speaker 3: We have the number one total defense in football, and
[10:46] Speaker 3: the offense is just putting them in horrible situations. I mean,
[10:49] Speaker 3: you know, third and one at the Denver 39, down three,
[10:52] Speaker 3: you throw a pick. Third and seven at your own
[10:54] Speaker 3: 28 in overtime, you throw a pick that leads to
[10:56] Speaker 3: a game winner. The pick against the Niners at the
[10:58] Speaker 3: plus 18 leads to an easy touchdown. The pick six
[11:02] Speaker 3: against the Commanders, right? This is all bad stuff. You
[11:05] Speaker 3: worry about the defense starting to kind of like, Maybe
[11:08] Speaker 3: start to point fingers behind the scenes a little bit?
[11:11] Speaker 4: I don't think so. I think it's a natural feeling
[11:16] Speaker 4: you might have after the interception. On the sideline, you say, oh, man,
[11:20] Speaker 4: and then come back on the field. But they strike
[11:23] Speaker 4: me as being very professional and with great leadership on
[11:26] Speaker 4: the defense. And then you couple that with, what's the
[11:29] Speaker 4: head coach? The head coach is a defensive guy. And so,
[11:34] Speaker 4: and how he... projects himself to his defense and the team,
[11:39] Speaker 4: I don't think you have to worry about that. Now,
[11:41] Speaker 4: will they react and get upset about it a little bit?
[11:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
[11:45] Speaker 4: But I don't think you have to worry too much
[11:47] Speaker 4: about that.
[11:48] Speaker 6: Sam, is it a mentality fix or a strategy fix?
[11:52] Speaker 6: And what I mean by that is the mentality fix
[11:54] Speaker 6: would be, hey, You just can't be that aggressive.
[11:57] Speaker 4: We've got great defense.
[11:59] Speaker 6: We can win games 14 to 10 all day long
[12:02] Speaker 6: as long as you don't turn over. Or is the
[12:03] Speaker 6: strategy fix like, I'm going to change the play calling.
[12:07] Speaker 6: I want you to throw here and here, not there.
[12:09] Speaker 2: How is it to fix, Sam?
[12:12] Speaker 4: It's all those things, Dick. It's all those things. I
[12:15] Speaker 4: was telling Dave when we came in that I had
[12:20] Speaker 4: the privilege of coaching Joe Montana, one of the great
[12:22] Speaker 4: ones of all time. So I chose to look at
[12:26] Speaker 4: his interceptions one year in the offseason. It turns out
[12:31] Speaker 4: there were two plays that were favorites of Coach Walsh.
[12:36] Speaker 4: Where he'd throw picks. That's where he'd throw the most picks.
[12:41] Speaker 4: So I went to Bill and said, I'm taking them out.
[12:42] Speaker 4: This was when I was with George. I was a coordinator,
[12:45] Speaker 4: so I could do that.
[12:46] Speaker 5: I thought.
[12:48] Speaker 4: But I took those plays away from him. And I
[12:51] Speaker 4: told Joe, I said, we're taking these that way. And
[12:54] Speaker 4: then he had a remarkable turnaround. So that's one thing.
[12:59] Speaker 4: The second thing is you look at, you've got to
[13:01] Speaker 4: decide what happened on an interception. It's not just numbers.
[13:06] Speaker 4: Is he making a poor decision or the right decision
[13:10] Speaker 4: and something happened? The ball got tipped, something happened like that.
[13:14] Speaker 4: So you kind of throw those interceptions over here. Now,
[13:16] Speaker 4: if he's making poor decisions on who to throw the
[13:19] Speaker 4: ball to, that has to be corrected. And that's where
[13:22] Speaker 4: you focus.
[13:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
[13:23] Speaker 3: Well, I just wonder how much of this is also
[13:26] Speaker 3: about he didn't take a snap in the preseason.
[13:28] Speaker 4: Yes.
[13:29] Speaker 1: Right?
[13:29] Speaker 3: And you've got a brand-new coordinator, by the way, in
[13:32] Speaker 3: Brian Fleury. And I've always kind of thought that was weird,
[13:35] Speaker 3: by the way, that here's a brand-new guy. I know
[13:37] Speaker 3: Sam knows him from his Niner days, but he wasn't
[13:40] Speaker 3: the coordinator. He was the tight ends coach back then.
[13:42] Speaker 3: Looking back, do you remember your take on that? Would
[13:44] Speaker 3: you have maybe tried to get Sam into the preseason
[13:47] Speaker 3: to work out some kinks for Brian Fleury?
[13:49] Speaker 2: Absolutely.
[13:50] Speaker 4: But I've said this before. I haven't been asked this
[13:52] Speaker 4: question before.
[13:53] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[13:53] Speaker 4: They do things so differently now.
[13:56] Speaker 5: Right.
[13:56] Speaker 4: There's a lot of teams that don't play their starters
[13:58] Speaker 4: at all.
[13:59] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
[14:00] Speaker 4: In the preseason.
[14:01] Speaker 5: Right.
[14:01] Speaker 6: McVay never does.
[14:03] Speaker 2: 20 teams did, by the way. Yeah. Only 12 quarterbacks
[14:07] Speaker 2: did not, and Sam's one of them.
[14:08] Speaker 4: Yeah. And so I always thought, listen, play them a
[14:12] Speaker 4: little bit. You know, it helps them.
[14:14] Speaker 5: Yeah. For sure. Yeah. For sure. Yeah.
[14:17] Speaker 3: Well, I mean, are you seeing any signs of a
[14:19] Speaker 3: relationship issue there where they're not on the same page
[14:21] Speaker 3: at all? I mean, it's maybe hard to see just
[14:23] Speaker 3: watching the game, but do you sense.
[14:25] Speaker 2: That could be possible?
[14:26] Speaker 4: Is it Brian? Fleury.
[14:28] Speaker 6: Fleury. Yeah.
[14:28] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[14:29] Speaker 4: I don't know him at all, but I don't know.
[14:36] Speaker 4: But I know this, that the play caller and the
[14:40] Speaker 4: quarterback have to be on the same page. They have
[14:45] Speaker 4: to understand each other. The quarterback has to know why
[14:48] Speaker 4: you're calling it, and if you call that play, where
[14:50] Speaker 4: you're going with the ball, if they're going to play
[14:52] Speaker 4: this game, all those things.
[14:55] Speaker 6: This game, do you believe in the desperation narrative for
[14:59] Speaker 6: one team and then the other team kind of sitting
[15:01] Speaker 6: fat and pretty leading the division by a couple of games?
[15:04] Speaker 6: Does that play in? Is that to Seattle's favor in
[15:09] Speaker 6: this game?
[15:14] Speaker 4: I don't think so. I think knowing Andy, the way
[15:18] Speaker 4: I know him, and the way his team plays and
[15:22] Speaker 4: how they think, I don't think you have to worry
[15:24] Speaker 4: about Kansas City doing that. And the Seahawks, now they're
[15:28] Speaker 4: going to be fired up because they need this win.
[15:29] Speaker 6: Do you notice that sometimes when you have teams that
[15:32] Speaker 6: are around. 500, maybe playing extra hard versus a team
[15:36] Speaker 6: that's five, six, seven games over. 500?
[15:37] Speaker 4: What do they call those, trap games or whatever?
[15:39] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[15:41] Speaker 4: Oh, gee.
[15:43] Speaker 2: You never had those trap games.
[15:45] Speaker 5: Though, did you?
[15:45] Speaker 4: Well, we had a few, yeah.
[15:47] Speaker 2: But you always won them, though. No, no, no.
[15:50] Speaker 4: No, Indianapolis. I'll never forget it. They came in 1-12
[15:54] Speaker 4: when we were in Indianapolis, and we were leading the league.
[15:57] Speaker 4: We went going to the Super Bowl.
[15:59] Speaker 2: Right.
[16:00] Speaker 4: They beat us 43-42. It was the best offensive per
[16:05] Speaker 4: play game I had that year. Our defense was really
[16:08] Speaker 4: Reggie White. We had good defense.
[16:10] Speaker 5: Right.
[16:10] Speaker 4: Not that day. Couldn't stop him. Who was quarterbacking for
[16:13] Speaker 4: those teams?
[16:13] Speaker 5: No.
[16:14] Speaker 2: Was that Harbaugh? Was Harbaugh playing for the Colts that day?
[16:16] Speaker 4: They were hurt.
[16:17] Speaker 2: You remember?
[16:17] Speaker 4: Their third string quarterback came in.
[16:18] Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
[16:19] Speaker 4: He played.
[16:20] Speaker 5: Geez.
[16:20] Speaker 4: So, yeah, I think then, Dick.
[16:22] Speaker 2: That's embarrassing.
[16:22] Speaker 4: The guy said, oh, man, this is going to be
[16:27] Speaker 4: a walk.
[16:27] Speaker 5: Unbelievable.
[16:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
[16:28] Speaker 4: You know what he did the first thing the next morning?
[16:30] Speaker 6: Huh?
[16:31] Speaker 4: I went into Fritz Schirmer's office, who's a coordinator and
[16:35] Speaker 4: a good friend and a great coach.
[16:37] Speaker 5: Right.
[16:38] Speaker 4: And he looks at me and he goes, I said,
[16:42] Speaker 4: I won't raise my voice, but you better tell me
[16:45] Speaker 4: what happened.
[16:47] Speaker 2: It's even scarier when you talk like that. You know that, right?
[16:50] Speaker 2: When you don't raise your voice, it's even scarier.
[16:53] Speaker 3: Mike Holmgren's here, and look, obviously this thing on Sunday
[16:56] Speaker 3: is just massive for the Hawks. I mean, they've got
[16:58] Speaker 3: the Bears coming up the following Monday, so they need
[17:01] Speaker 3: to get back in the win column.
[17:02] Speaker 2: But I think you kind of referenced it, Mike, earlier.
[17:05] Speaker 3: The offensive line is not playing really kind of up
[17:08] Speaker 3: to their standard. I mean, it's hard to know why
[17:10] Speaker 3: that's happening. I mean, they've got some injuries. The right
[17:13] Speaker 3: guard spot's been kind of up and down. I mean,
[17:15] Speaker 3: I've never looked more to Bradford coming back. than I
[17:18] Speaker 3: do now.
[17:18] Speaker 2: I mean, geez.
[17:19] Speaker 3: I mean, you know, between him and Christian Haynes and
[17:21] Speaker 3: Bo Stevens, he feels like he's the best guy.
[17:23] Speaker 2: But Grace Abel's taken a step back. Abe Lucas has
[17:26] Speaker 2: taken a step back.
[17:27] Speaker 3: Do you have any thoughts on why that could be
[17:30] Speaker 3: after they were so great for the most part a
[17:31] Speaker 3: year ago?
[17:32] Speaker 4: No. It's a puzzle to me. That's why I said that.
[17:36] Speaker 4: I mean, because I think, I look at those guys
[17:38] Speaker 4: that really, really dominated last year. And there was great hope.
[17:44] Speaker 4: We had some young guys in there. They had everyone
[17:47] Speaker 4: coming back. Everyone coming back, so there wasn't any jockeying
[17:50] Speaker 4: around at positions. Okay, getting back to Sam now. He's
[17:57] Speaker 4: been hit. He got hit 17 times in that game,
[18:00] Speaker 4: not even including the interception.
[18:02] Speaker 2: The Denver game, right, correct. Yes, right.
[18:04] Speaker 4: And so that's too many times. I mean, you can't.
[18:08] Speaker 4: No wonder every once in a while he'll throw one
[18:10] Speaker 4: up and you go, why did he do that? Because
[18:12] Speaker 4: he got knocked around.
[18:14] Speaker 2: Because of the lack of running.
[18:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
[18:16] Speaker 2: Maybe. You know what? I want to ask you something
[18:18] Speaker 2: that Dick's been... Just real quick.
[18:19] Speaker 3: So the last interception that he threw, he's going to
[18:22] Speaker 3: his left, right? And there's a safety that comes over
[18:24] Speaker 3: at the last second, picks off that pass. Do you
[18:27] Speaker 3: think it's more likely that he just didn't see that guy?
[18:31] Speaker 4: Yes.
[18:31] Speaker 2: Or that he saw him and thought, I can do
[18:33] Speaker 2: this anyway?
[18:34] Speaker 4: No, is there... On that play? Yes. I don't think
[18:37] Speaker 4: he saw him.
[18:38] Speaker 2: Got it. Got it.
[18:39] Speaker 4: Now, your other way, he has done that too. Because
[18:45] Speaker 4: look at it. How many times have you seen him
[18:46] Speaker 4: throw not much room, receiver is pretty much covered, and
[18:50] Speaker 4: he goes, boom. It's in there. Particularly in an enigma.
[18:54] Speaker 4: I don't know how. If I was playing against him,
[18:57] Speaker 4: I'd figure out some way to stop him because they're
[18:59] Speaker 4: not getting the ball to anybody else.
[19:01] Speaker 5: But....
[19:03] Speaker 4: You've seen him just drill a beautiful pass in a very,
[19:06] Speaker 4: very tight window. You can't do that all the time. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[19:12] Speaker 4: So you've got to kind of talk to him and say,
[19:15] Speaker 4: I know you've done it before, but we've got to
[19:17] Speaker 4: now make choices here. And he knows that. I mean,
[19:22] Speaker 4: he's a bright guy, and he knows that. But now
[19:25] Speaker 4: he's got to do it.
[19:28] Speaker 2: That's what bothers me the most about him.
[19:29] Speaker 4: I like him a lot.
[19:30] Speaker 6: He just has overwhelming confidence in his ability to put
[19:33] Speaker 6: the ball anywhere he wants to.
[19:35] Speaker 4: Put the ball.
[19:36] Speaker 6: And it doesn't always happen. Mike Holmgren joining us. Coach,
[19:40] Speaker 6: this defense has been fantastic. Statistically, it's as good as
[19:43] Speaker 6: any defense since the 2008 Steelers. I mean, they're playing
[19:45] Speaker 6: great football, only 3-3. What should worry this D more?
[19:50] Speaker 6: going into this game? Patrick Mahomes and what he can
[19:53] Speaker 6: do in the passing game with Xavier Worthy and, you know,
[19:55] Speaker 6: scampering a little bit. Or just the flat-out handoff game
[19:59] Speaker 6: to Ken Walker who's having his best season.
[20:02] Speaker 4: I think Ken Walker is what they have to stop.
[20:06] Speaker 4: I think... I've got a lot of confidence when they're healthy,
[20:10] Speaker 4: when Love is playing and everyone's playing back there in
[20:14] Speaker 4: the secondary. And I think they can put pressure. They'll
[20:18] Speaker 4: put pressure on Patrick. Now, they've still got to stop Mahomes,
[20:23] Speaker 4: and they've got to know Travis Kelsey's in the game.
[20:27] Speaker 4: But I think they have to concentrate. Let's stop the run.
[20:32] Speaker 4: Let's make sure he doesn't. Changed the game.
[20:36] Speaker 2: Right. Well, you know Andy Reid as well as anybody.
[20:39] Speaker 2: What's his weakness? His weakness?
[20:41] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[20:42] Speaker 2: If you were coaching against Andy Reid.
[20:44] Speaker 4: Cheeseburgers, right? Yeah. I was going to say cheeseburgers.
[20:46] Speaker 2: So would you hold a cheeseburger up?
[20:47] Speaker 4: Too much mayonnaise. A little too much mayonnaise.
[20:49] Speaker 2: Okay, gotcha.
[20:50] Speaker 3: So squirt him with some mayo. I mean, honestly, if
[20:53] Speaker 3: you're Mike McDonough and you're game planning against Andy Reid,
[20:55] Speaker 3: I mean... Does he get a little nuts sometimes in
[20:58] Speaker 3: certain situations? Is there anything about him that you would
[21:00] Speaker 3: tell Mike, you can get him here, you can get
[21:03] Speaker 3: him there, anything at all?
[21:04] Speaker 4: It's tough. It's tough. He's a good strategy guy. Right, right.
[21:13] Speaker 4: And he's not like me. He doesn't blow up.
[21:17] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:17] Speaker 4: You know, he might blow up inside, but he doesn't
[21:21] Speaker 4: show it. And his players respond to him in a
[21:24] Speaker 4: way that, okay, They really do stuff for him. You
[21:28] Speaker 4: remember when Travis Kelsey hit him and almost knocked him
[21:31] Speaker 4: down in that game?
[21:32] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:35] Speaker 4: Think of it instead of me. It would have been
[21:39] Speaker 4: an ugly scene. Yeah, whatever.
[21:44] Speaker 3: I think he was more shocked than anything that he
[21:46] Speaker 3: did it, right? Hey, let's do this. We're going to break.
[21:48] Speaker 3: There's some other non-Seahawks stuff to get to. You may
[21:51] Speaker 3: have seen what's happening in Paris, by the way.
[21:54] Speaker 2: Right? With all the protests.
[21:55] Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
[21:56] Speaker 3: And they're going to play. They're playing a game out
[21:58] Speaker 3: there on Sunday. I mean, like, what's going on here, right?
[22:01] Speaker 2: We'll get to that.
[22:02] Speaker 3: You know, UW's got a quarterback controversy, too, Mike, with
[22:05] Speaker 3: DeMond Williams and Elijah Brown.
[22:06] Speaker 2: The Rams, are they done? All the injuries they've got.
[22:09] Speaker 4: In L.A.? How about the quarterback for Philadelphia?
[22:15] Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts and the blood clots.
[22:16] Speaker 4: And going on over.
[22:19] Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
[22:20] Speaker 3: There's a ton going on. The NFL, man, it's just
[22:23] Speaker 3: the gift that keeps on giving. We'll talk to Mike,
[22:25] Speaker 3: and then Chris Collinsworth is going to join us at 5.
[22:27] Speaker 3: We're live at the 520 Bar and Grill right here
[22:29] Speaker 3: on 93.3 KJRFM.
[22:34] Speaker 1: Now back to Softie and Dick and the Mike Holmgren Show.
[22:37] Speaker 1: Brought to you by the most trusted source in tickets
[22:40] Speaker 1: at VenueKings.com. On Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
[22:45] Speaker 3: All right, boys and girls, we are back at the
[22:47] Speaker 3: 520 Bar and Grill in Bellevue. Mike Holmgren's here. Finally
[22:51] Speaker 3: decided to show up and show his face here in public.
[22:53] Speaker 6: Yeah, we missed him.
[22:54] Speaker 2: I mean, I get it. You're a big deal. You
[22:55] Speaker 2: get swarmed by autograph seekers, celebrities, all that stuff.
[22:59] Speaker 4: You know the story. I would have been here.
[23:01] Speaker 2: No, I know.
[23:01] Speaker 5: I know.
[23:03] Speaker 3: It's good to see you, though. It's great to have
[23:04] Speaker 3: you here. Chris Collinsworth will join us, by the way.
[23:07] Speaker 3: Coming up next segment, we're looking forward to having him
[23:09] Speaker 3: on the show. So let's get away from the Hawks
[23:11] Speaker 3: for a minute or two. There's a lot going on.
[23:14] Speaker 3: First of all, I want to know how you would handle,
[23:16] Speaker 3: and I don't know how you, if you've seen it, all.
[23:18] Speaker 2: The protests, everything happening in Paris.
[23:20] Speaker 4: It's horrible.
[23:20] Speaker 3: A lot going on out there, right? Churches getting burned down,
[23:23] Speaker 3: a lot of chaos. If you're the coach of the
[23:25] Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers, if you're Mike McCarthy... and you're going to Paris.
[23:29] Speaker 3: They just announced today that they're canceling a big fan
[23:32] Speaker 3: event out there because it's too dangerous. But they're playing
[23:35] Speaker 3: the game. So we can cancel the fan event, but
[23:38] Speaker 3: we can play the game. Would you have any apprehensions
[23:41] Speaker 3: about going out there this weekend if you were coaching
[23:43] Speaker 3: in this game?
[23:44] Speaker 4: Absolutely. It would be something we talk about, but you
[23:48] Speaker 4: know this as well as anyway, both of you do.
[23:51] Speaker 4: When the league makes a decision, some of that stuff,
[23:56] Speaker 4: I wasn't, I didn't like it. I didn't vote for it.
[23:59] Speaker 2: Right.
[24:00] Speaker 4: But now they're expanding these, going to Brazil, going to Paris,
[24:07] Speaker 4: going to all these things. And you know what brought
[24:10] Speaker 4: to my attention was that the Jalen Hurts' thing. He's
[24:15] Speaker 4: on a plane.
[24:16] Speaker 2: From London, right.
[24:16] Speaker 4: You're not supposed to do that if you have blood clots.
[24:19] Speaker 2: Right.
[24:20] Speaker 4: You know, those things. So, no, it was, but they
[24:24] Speaker 4: couldn't do anything. They got to play the game.
[24:27] Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
[24:28] Speaker 4: But then you kind of insulate your players. They stay
[24:32] Speaker 4: at the hotel. The things that they may have wanted
[24:35] Speaker 4: to do, you've got to be careful.
[24:38] Speaker 6: Well, and the fan event, too, is supposed to be
[24:39] Speaker 6: on the streets where the riots actually are happening.
[24:42] Speaker 4: That's why they canceled that.
[24:44] Speaker 6: All right, Coach, there's been some coaches that have kind
[24:47] Speaker 6: of embarrassed themselves this last week. Dan Quinn was unsure
[24:53] Speaker 6: what down it was.
[24:54] Speaker 2: Supposedly. Supposedly.
[24:56] Speaker 6: Aaron Glenn, not supposedly, did not know that his team
[25:00] Speaker 6: didn't have the ball coming out of the third quarter.
[25:03] Speaker 6: He said that to the reporter. He's like, well, at
[25:05] Speaker 6: least we get the ball here. We're going to go
[25:06] Speaker 6: down and score. Well, no, you didn't get the ball.
[25:08] Speaker 6: Did you honestly, did you ever not know what down
[25:11] Speaker 6: it was? Did you ever not know coming out of halftime?
[25:16] Speaker 4: This is years later.
[25:17] Speaker 2: Who had the ball?
[25:18] Speaker 5: No.
[25:19] Speaker 4: Neither one of those things, right?
[25:20] Speaker 5: No.
[25:20] Speaker 4: The only time I made a mistake like that, well,
[25:26] Speaker 4: it was in the Super Bowl.
[25:29] Speaker 2: Which one?
[25:30] Speaker 4: The one where Denver beat when I was in Green
[25:31] Speaker 4: Bay the second year.
[25:32] Speaker 2: Right, right. By the way, just for the record, you
[25:35] Speaker 2: brought this up, not me.
[25:36] Speaker 4: Yeah, Denver, they were going down to score, and they
[25:40] Speaker 4: could have held on to the ball and kicked a
[25:44] Speaker 4: field goal, a 15-yard field goal.
[25:46] Speaker 2: With no time.
[25:47] Speaker 4: With no time. So I said, let... Let him score.
[25:52] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[25:53] Speaker 4: And in that little series there, when I was thinking
[25:56] Speaker 4: about that, and I took off my headset because I
[26:01] Speaker 4: was mad, I threw it into the ground. Typically, I
[26:05] Speaker 4: had a guy telling me in my ear about those things.
[26:09] Speaker 6: Right.
[26:09] Speaker 4: You got third, you know, every time. And I screwed up.
[26:14] Speaker 4: I took my thing off and I took it off.
[26:16] Speaker 4: And as a result, I lost it. I didn't. I
[26:20] Speaker 4: lost it down right in there. It wouldn't have made
[26:22] Speaker 4: any difference, as it turns out.
[26:23] Speaker 5: Right.
[26:23] Speaker 4: That was the one time. Would it have given you
[26:25] Speaker 4: more time, though, right? No, because I let them score.
[26:29] Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay.
[26:30] Speaker 4: You know, and so it was, they had enough. It
[26:35] Speaker 4: was first down. They were going to milk it down
[26:39] Speaker 4: to where I didn't have any time left.
[26:40] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[26:41] Speaker 4: Anyway, I did it.
[26:42] Speaker 2: I think about losses all the time as a fan.
[26:44] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[26:45] Speaker 2: Do you do that as a coach, even today?
[26:47] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[26:48] Speaker 2: Do you wake you up at night every now and then?
[26:50] Speaker 4: Every once in a while, I'll meet somebody and go, hey,
[26:52] Speaker 4: you know, I thought you really got screwed against the Steelers.
[26:56] Speaker 4: And I go, I just finished. Yeah, thanks a lot.
[27:01] Speaker 4: And it comes back, you know.
[27:02] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[27:03] Speaker 4: Yeah, they say that, and it's true. You know, you
[27:05] Speaker 4: win Super Bowls, you lose Super Bowls. The losses stay
[27:08] Speaker 4: with you longer.
[27:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt. Well, Mike Holmgren's with us, and I
[27:12] Speaker 2: wonder what's going on in L.A. with the Rams. Puka
[27:14] Speaker 2: Nakua's got a calf injury, right, Dick? Devontae Adams is out.
[27:18] Speaker 3: Other injuries on the defensive line, they're 2-4.
[27:20] Speaker 2: They got with the Raiders. Leading tackler's got a concussion.
[27:23] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, are we starting to feel like the
[27:26] Speaker 3: Rams might be kind of done and did the super
[27:29] Speaker 3: team talk maybe kind of get to them a little bit?
[27:33] Speaker 4: I don't think it got to them, but I think
[27:36] Speaker 4: it may have been premature. Because the Super Bowl, then
[27:39] Speaker 4: when they signed Donald, Donald.
[27:41] Speaker 2: Aaron Donald, right.
[27:43] Speaker 4: Then it really kind of exploded. Oh, boy, we got
[27:47] Speaker 4: Miles and Garrett and Donald. But they, like we were
[27:53] Speaker 4: talking about earlier, he didn't play any of the starters.
[27:57] Speaker 4: He didn't play guys in the preseason.
[27:59] Speaker 5: Right.
[28:00] Speaker 4: And I think, I'd have to check this with somebody,
[28:04] Speaker 4: I think that leads to injury.
[28:07] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[28:07] Speaker 5: Really?
[28:08] Speaker 4: I think it does. And you see that happening with them.
[28:12] Speaker 2: Got about 90 seconds. Go ahead.
[28:14] Speaker 4: How well do you know Coach Ditka, who just passed away?
[28:18] Speaker 4: I knew him pretty well. And he left the league
[28:23] Speaker 4: right when I came in. And we played that game,
[28:27] Speaker 4: and they beat us. And then we beat the Bears
[28:31] Speaker 4: like nine years in a row. So it's a big
[28:33] Speaker 4: green bay in the Bears. But he was really good
[28:35] Speaker 4: to me. And then even when he went on the
[28:38] Speaker 4: TV and he'd come in and visit. I was walking
[28:41] Speaker 4: down the street in Chicago with Kathy because our kids
[28:45] Speaker 4: went to school there.
[28:46] Speaker 6: Right.
[28:47] Speaker 4: And a guy comes up to me on the side.
[28:49] Speaker 4: He goes, you're Mike Cohen. I said, yeah. He goes,
[28:52] Speaker 4: I just decorated Mike Ditka's restaurant. And he goes, let
[28:58] Speaker 4: me phone him. And he phones him and he hands
[29:00] Speaker 4: me the phone. I'm walking down the street. He goes,
[29:03] Speaker 4: what are you doing here? How come you didn't phone me?
[29:04] Speaker 4: How come you didn't talk to me? You come to
[29:07] Speaker 4: the restaurant tonight. Come on. Come in.
[29:09] Speaker 2: Did you go?
[29:10] Speaker 5: No.
[29:11] Speaker 4: I think we had other plans, but. He was a
[29:15] Speaker 4: fiery guy, and he's a tough boy. Yeah, no doubt.
[29:18] Speaker 2: Well, you know what?
[29:19] Speaker 3: One of the all-time great characters in the history of
[29:22] Speaker 3: the NFL. Let's do this. We're going to break. Chris Collinsworth,
[29:25] Speaker 3: you know very well. Did you coach against him in
[29:28] Speaker 3: that Super Bowl against the Bengals?
[29:30] Speaker 2: Yes. You were there.
[29:31] Speaker 3: Okay, we'll talk about that maybe. But a lot to
[29:34] Speaker 3: get to at Chris Collinsworth. Mike Holmgren is with us
[29:36] Speaker 3: at the 520 Bar and Grill.
[29:37] Speaker 2: We'll talk to Chris Collinsworth next on 93.3. KJRFM.

[30:16] Speaker 3: We are back at the 540 Bar and Grill in Bellevue.
[30:19] Speaker 3: Mike Holmgren has made his return to the airwaves with
[30:22] Speaker 3: us after a week off on a river cruise somewhere
[30:25] Speaker 3: at least that's what he said he was doing who
[30:27] Speaker 3: knows what he was up to people flocking to mike
[30:30] Speaker 3: autograph seekers looking for photographs with the potential down the
[30:34] Speaker 3: road eventually will be hall of famer but mike we're
[30:37] Speaker 3: going to give you the floor here because we have
[30:39] Speaker 3: a very special guest joining us right now on the
[30:41] Speaker 3: radio show so why don't you introduce our next guest
[30:43] Speaker 3: and that's all.
[30:44] Speaker 4: Yours well when you when you said that Chris was
[30:47] Speaker 4: coming on the show. I was really on the river cruise,
[30:50] Speaker 4: and I was going to stay. And then I came
[30:53] Speaker 4: back so I could talk to him.
[30:55] Speaker 5: I thought once you heard I was going to be
[30:59] Speaker 5: on the show, you were going to stay.
[31:01] Speaker 4: No, I'll tell you what. Something we haven't talked about. Actually,
[31:07] Speaker 4: my first foyer into TV, Chris was my coach. It
[31:12] Speaker 4: was at a Super Bowl, and I was one of
[31:14] Speaker 4: the guys. I didn't know anything. and he kind of
[31:17] Speaker 4: coached me through that, so I've always appreciated that. Thank
[31:20] Speaker 4: you very much.
[31:23] Speaker 5: I didn't coach you into anything.
[31:25] Speaker 2: You know better.
[31:28] Speaker 4: Well, listen, there's a lot of stuff going on here
[31:30] Speaker 4: in Seattle, and you know it. The Seahawks are 3-3,
[31:34] Speaker 4: and there's a lot of surprises in the league. You know,
[31:38] Speaker 4: the Rams, the records, there's a lot of surprises. How
[31:42] Speaker 4: do you view the Seahawks, where they are right now,
[31:45] Speaker 4: and People here are a little disappointed they're 3-3. How
[31:49] Speaker 4: do you look on that?
[31:52] Speaker 5: Yeah, I understand that. I mean, you're Super Bowl champs.
[31:55] Speaker 5: The expectations are high. No Kenneth Walker, and we've already
[32:00] Speaker 5: seen the impact that Kenneth Walker is having on the
[32:02] Speaker 5: team you're going to be playing, the Kansas City Chiefs.
[32:05] Speaker 5: But when you take the grand total of what they've
[32:08] Speaker 5: lost by a combined eight points in three games, something
[32:11] Speaker 5: like that.
[32:12] Speaker 2: So I.
[32:14] Speaker 5: Tend to look at football season anymore as like back
[32:18] Speaker 5: in the day, you played four, you played six preseason games.
[32:22] Speaker 5: And opening day, people were ready for battle. Now I
[32:25] Speaker 5: kind of think of preseason as whatever for rookies. And
[32:29] Speaker 5: then September is for the veterans. And then we're ready
[32:32] Speaker 5: to play in October.
[32:33] Speaker 2: So yeah.
[32:34] Speaker 5: I kind of start taking it seriously right about now.
[32:37] Speaker 5: But I do think that there are at least a
[32:40] Speaker 5: few questions about this Seattle team. And this is going
[32:45] Speaker 5: to be a great matchup. It really is. Kansas City
[32:48] Speaker 5: is a really good team offensively, defensively. Quarterback position can
[32:54] Speaker 5: really play. And so it's going to be fun.
[32:57] Speaker 4: Well, you know, the big question is, and you know this,
[33:00] Speaker 4: having played with good quarterbacks and Sam Darnold, I think,
[33:08] Speaker 4: is a very good quarterback, but he's doing some things
[33:11] Speaker 4: now that have people worried. When you watch Sam play,
[33:16] Speaker 4: I'd like your opinion of how he's doing.
[33:21] Speaker 5: Well, you know, I knew going into studying him that
[33:25] Speaker 5: He had turned it over, right? And you never want
[33:28] Speaker 5: that out of your quarterback. I do think that they've
[33:32] Speaker 5: got a few issues in protection. They've spread it out
[33:37] Speaker 5: a little bit more this year. Bradford's obviously not been
[33:42] Speaker 5: in the game. But as far as just watching Sam...
[33:46] Speaker 5: Donald throw the ball, I thought he was slinging it
[33:49] Speaker 5: in that game against Denver. And of course, he came
[33:52] Speaker 5: up with the two interceptions late in the game, and
[33:55] Speaker 5: that's all anybody's going to remember. But I don't think
[33:58] Speaker 5: there's anything wrong with what he's doing, but you just
[34:01] Speaker 5: can't turn the ball over the number of times that
[34:04] Speaker 5: they've turned it over. And the three losses, they've turned
[34:07] Speaker 5: it over at least three times in every one of
[34:09] Speaker 5: those games. And, you know, you can make football out
[34:13] Speaker 5: to be anything you want it to be, you know,
[34:15] Speaker 5: and there are three wins they've turned it over no
[34:18] Speaker 5: more than once. And the three losses, they turned it
[34:21] Speaker 5: over at least three times in each of those. So
[34:25] Speaker 5: I've seen Sam Darnold given up on before. I can
[34:29] Speaker 5: remember in Minnesota when everybody was so down on him
[34:33] Speaker 5: for the last two games, the final and then the
[34:36] Speaker 5: first playoff game. And he really didn't play very well
[34:38] Speaker 5: and came back the next year, won the Super Bowl.
[34:40] Speaker 5: So you know, you know what it is, especially with
[34:45] Speaker 5: young quarterbacks and developing teams and yet change offensive coordinators
[34:49] Speaker 5: and everything's, everything's just different. And, but I know one
[34:54] Speaker 5: thing that team plays defense with the heart of a
[34:57] Speaker 5: lion and what they did in the second half against Denver.
[35:01] Speaker 5: I mean, it was explosive. I mean, if they play
[35:04] Speaker 5: like that, that's the way they were playing in the
[35:07] Speaker 5: playoffs and the super bowl. And, um, If they play
[35:11] Speaker 5: more games like that, they're going to be really tough
[35:14] Speaker 5: to beat.
[35:15] Speaker 4: No, and we're talking with Chris Collingsworth. I know he's
[35:18] Speaker 4: got a very unique voice, so I know you didn't
[35:21] Speaker 4: have to have me tell you that because you recognize
[35:23] Speaker 4: his voice. But thank you for being with us today. JSN,
[35:30] Speaker 4: you played the position. I'm thinking if I'm coaching against JSN,
[35:37] Speaker 4: I go into my defensive coordinator and go, look, I
[35:39] Speaker 4: don't care. Who else you cover? Who else you stop?
[35:44] Speaker 4: You've got to stop him. He's an amazing young receiver,
[35:48] Speaker 4: isn't he?
[35:50] Speaker 5: He really is. And I really have a hard time
[35:54] Speaker 5: comparing him to anybody because he's like, I don't know,
[36:00] Speaker 5: the first time you ever saw a sports car drive,
[36:03] Speaker 5: you know, a Porsche or Lamborghini or something, and watching it.
[36:07] Speaker 5: you know, just smoothly take the turns, and it looks
[36:10] Speaker 5: so effortless. And sometimes you can look at him because
[36:14] Speaker 5: he's not a big guy. He doesn't have any incredibly,
[36:16] Speaker 5: you know, outstanding, you know, feature where you go, oh, yeah,
[36:21] Speaker 5: he's 6'4, or he weighs 220 pounds, or he runs
[36:24] Speaker 5: a 4'2, or any of that sort of thing. And
[36:28] Speaker 5: then I started thinking about it a little bit, and
[36:29] Speaker 5: I go, hmm, who else was like that that really
[36:32] Speaker 5: didn't have any incredible features? Oh, yeah, Jerry Rice was
[36:36] Speaker 5: kind of like that. And just the ability to, I
[36:41] Speaker 5: don't know, to look the same and to look so smooth.
[36:45] Speaker 5: And the way he cuts off his inside foot. I
[36:49] Speaker 5: could never cut off my inside foot. I'd fall on
[36:51] Speaker 5: my face every time. But he can just kind of
[36:54] Speaker 5: glide and take the turns like a sports car. And
[36:58] Speaker 5: I don't think that defenders know what he's going to do.
[37:03] Speaker 5: Most receivers have some kind of tell in their route running.
[37:07] Speaker 5: and that's how you can get a jump on him.
[37:11] Speaker 5: But it's like he never changes speeds. He never changes gears.
[37:16] Speaker 5: No matter if he's turning in or turning out or
[37:18] Speaker 5: going deep or a comeback or whatever it is, he
[37:21] Speaker 5: can just do it so smoothly. And I think if
[37:26] Speaker 5: you can be the leading receiver in the National Football
[37:29] Speaker 5: League a couple years in a row and still be underrated,
[37:32] Speaker 5: I kind of feel like he's still a little bit underrated.
[37:36] Speaker 4: You know what? That's well said. He is so smooth,
[37:39] Speaker 4: and he's not a big guy. And he's taken some
[37:42] Speaker 4: hits now, and he bounces up. I think he's tough. So, no,
[37:47] Speaker 4: we're very lucky to have him in Seattle. Now I'm
[37:51] Speaker 4: going to put your general manager's hat on, okay? Yeah.
[37:56] Speaker 4: Ken Walker. I know I can't let you go without
[38:00] Speaker 4: an opinion on if you were the general manager, would
[38:03] Speaker 4: you have signed him last year?
[38:07] Speaker 5: Well, I've got a little bit different theory than maybe some.
[38:15] Speaker 5: You know, there's– you think of like Jameer Gibbs. I
[38:21] Speaker 5: think that running backs in general are way underrated at
[38:27] Speaker 5: this point in the NFL's cycle of life. You know, like–
[38:33] Speaker 5: So we went from, I can remember when I first
[38:36] Speaker 5: got in the league, everybody was 6'4, and playing against
[38:39] Speaker 5: zone defenses, and you were throwing those kind of things.
[38:44] Speaker 5: And then Duper and Clayton came along because everybody started
[38:48] Speaker 5: playing more man coverage, and then those guys were eating
[38:50] Speaker 5: up the man coverage. And then it just kind of
[38:53] Speaker 5: goes in a big cycle. And right now we're in
[38:55] Speaker 5: a cycle where everybody's playing at least two deep, if
[39:00] Speaker 5: not four deep, on the back end. They're protecting against
[39:04] Speaker 5: the big plays. They've got six in the box instead
[39:07] Speaker 5: of seven in the box. And so now running the
[39:10] Speaker 5: football is almost given to you. It's almost given to you.
[39:15] Speaker 5: So now so many of the big plays in the
[39:18] Speaker 5: NFL are coming from running backs. You know, Jameer Gibbs, B.
[39:23] Speaker 5: John Robinson, you go right down the list. I mean,
[39:25] Speaker 5: these guys, if they break a tackle and they get
[39:28] Speaker 5: into the secondary and you're seeing these guys go for
[39:31] Speaker 5: really big runs. And Kenneth Walker, with this outside zone,
[39:36] Speaker 5: which is what everybody's doing at least 35 to 40
[39:40] Speaker 5: percent of the time, is a play in which if
[39:43] Speaker 5: you have power to cut back, which Kenneth Walker certainly has,
[39:48] Speaker 5: you can run over people because everybody's on the move.
[39:52] Speaker 5: But what his secret sauce is, that ability to bounce
[39:55] Speaker 5: out and hit the gears. And, Mike, I'm telling you,
[39:59] Speaker 5: we did the Super Bowl last year, and we went
[40:03] Speaker 5: to practice, and I'm watching him. And, you know, he
[40:07] Speaker 5: was kind of just another player to me at that
[40:10] Speaker 5: point in time. And I'm watching them in practice, and
[40:14] Speaker 5: this is that last practice, that last hard practice before
[40:19] Speaker 5: the Super Bowl, and everybody's amped up. I mean, everybody.
[40:23] Speaker 5: And Kenneth Walker was running two ticks faster than everybody
[40:29] Speaker 5: on the field. I'm talking about everybody, the corners, the wideouts,
[40:32] Speaker 5: than everybody. And I was like, oh, my gosh, I
[40:36] Speaker 5: had no idea this kid had this in him. And
[40:40] Speaker 5: I started, I walked over to the rest of our
[40:42] Speaker 5: crew who was at practice with me. And I said,
[40:45] Speaker 5: I think Kenneth Walker is going to be the MVP
[40:48] Speaker 5: of this game and Seattle is going to win. And
[40:52] Speaker 5: out of practice. Now, I don't know if I've ever
[40:55] Speaker 5: said anything close to that watching practice. And I'll be darned,
[40:59] Speaker 5: we got in the game and he looked exactly how
[41:02] Speaker 5: he looked in practice. You know, they always say you
[41:05] Speaker 5: practice how you play and all that. He was the
[41:09] Speaker 5: exact same way. In that game, he beat everybody to
[41:12] Speaker 5: the edge. And when he got to the edge, he
[41:15] Speaker 5: was turning it upfield and he was making somebody miss.
[41:18] Speaker 5: It was really exciting to see somebody who distinguished themselves
[41:22] Speaker 5: in practice like that and then came back and showed
[41:26] Speaker 5: it in the game. And when I talked to the
[41:28] Speaker 5: Chiefs guys today, they were saying the exact same thing. Because, Chris,
[41:35] Speaker 5: this guy never takes a second off in practice. He
[41:39] Speaker 5: plays in practice exactly like how he would do it
[41:44] Speaker 5: if it were in a game. And so the timing
[41:46] Speaker 5: that we can create with our running game and with
[41:49] Speaker 5: the passing game with him is second to none. So, yeah,
[41:54] Speaker 5: I was pretty strong on Kenneth Walker at the time.
[41:58] Speaker 5: And I think running backs are coming off a little
[42:02] Speaker 5: cheap right now because of the fact that we haven't
[42:05] Speaker 5: transitioned because of the way the defenses are playing. into
[42:09] Speaker 5: that 2-D. So I think that running backs are growing
[42:13] Speaker 5: in importance in the league with the way we're playing defense.
[42:16] Speaker 4: Yeah, we're talking to Chris Collingsworth now. And listening to
[42:21] Speaker 4: him talk about Kenneth Walker and his predictions, now you
[42:26] Speaker 4: see why he coached me up in that Super Bowl
[42:30] Speaker 4: that we were– I had the privilege of being with him. Now,
[42:34] Speaker 4: having said that about running backs and throughout the league,
[42:37] Speaker 4: The Seahawks are struggling right now. And the offensive line,
[42:44] Speaker 4: you've seen film. Is the offensive line, because they were
[42:48] Speaker 4: solid in that Super Bowl and at the end of
[42:52] Speaker 4: last season. They're struggling a little bit now. What's going on?
[42:56] Speaker 4: Do you have an idea?
[42:56] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[42:59] Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that they've got the right guard position
[43:03] Speaker 5: has obviously been a little bit of an issue.
[43:07] Speaker 2: And now, I don't.
[43:09] Speaker 5: Know if Anthony Bradford comes back this week or not,
[43:11] Speaker 5: but it sounds like he may be getting close. And
[43:15] Speaker 5: then they just are going to have to be able
[43:17] Speaker 5: to find some pops. out of that running back position,
[43:21] Speaker 5: somebody that can still take that outside zone and get
[43:26] Speaker 5: it around the edge. And, you know, who knows who
[43:29] Speaker 5: it's going to be? I mean, it might be Bayless
[43:31] Speaker 5: Jones had a couple of nice runs in that game
[43:34] Speaker 5: the other day and managed to get outside. You know,
[43:38] Speaker 5: it could be Rashid Shaheed. that they lined up in
[43:42] Speaker 5: the backfield a couple of times and they'll hand them
[43:44] Speaker 5: the ball or reverses. But they've got to find a
[43:46] Speaker 5: way to stretch those defenses the way that they did
[43:49] Speaker 5: last year with K-9. And if they do, I think
[43:54] Speaker 5: they're going to be fine anyway. Honestly, this is a
[43:57] Speaker 5: really good team with an outstanding defense, a really good
[44:00] Speaker 5: offensive line. So I'm not worried about them. I'm really not.
[44:06] Speaker 4: You know what? And I have to do this. Dave is...
[44:10] Speaker 4: And Dick, don't want me to do this, but my
[44:13] Speaker 4: daughter wanted me to ask you a question. So I'm
[44:16] Speaker 4: not going to ask you. Okay, that's fine.
[44:17] Speaker 2: Do it.
[44:18] Speaker 4: Go for it. No, they're big football fans. And the
[44:23] Speaker 4: injuries seem to be, you know, and I would agree.
[44:28] Speaker 4: They don't play any of the guys in the preseason.
[44:31] Speaker 4: And then there just seems to be a bigger, bigger,
[44:35] Speaker 4: the Rams, injuries, injuries. How do you look at that?
[44:40] Speaker 4: Do you have any feelings about the injury situation?
[44:44] Speaker 5: Mike, these guys are so big and so fast right now.
[44:49] Speaker 5: I'm not sure I could outrun the defensive linemen that
[44:51] Speaker 5: are playing out there right now. It's almost like you
[44:56] Speaker 5: need to expand the size of the field. They are
[44:59] Speaker 5: going so fast into each other. I watched some of
[45:03] Speaker 5: these new kickoffs that they have. And, you know, everybody
[45:06] Speaker 5: that's running down there now used to be defensive backs and,
[45:10] Speaker 5: you know, maybe linebackers. Now they've got huge people running
[45:14] Speaker 5: down there and big 220-pound running backs running it back
[45:18] Speaker 5: the other way.
[45:19] Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, my.
[45:20] Speaker 5: I mean, some of the collisions on those kickoffs are
[45:23] Speaker 5: downright frightening. So I think it's the way they train.
[45:28] Speaker 5: You know, I mean, somebody that would be 6'2, 200
[45:33] Speaker 5: pounds back in my day is probably 6'2, 220 pounds
[45:38] Speaker 5: of muscle in today's game. And the guys play their
[45:41] Speaker 5: guts out. I mean, the one thing you have to
[45:43] Speaker 5: say about watching them play, they're amazing. It's like they
[45:48] Speaker 5: have no fear. And they just play so hard. I
[45:53] Speaker 5: really admire the game. You know, I never like to
[45:56] Speaker 5: say that, you know, Their error was better than my
[46:00] Speaker 5: error or anything like that. But I watch them, and
[46:02] Speaker 5: sometimes I just shake my head and go, oh, my gosh,
[46:04] Speaker 5: I'm so glad I don't play in this error. Because, one,
[46:09] Speaker 5: I think I would have about 150 fumbles if I
[46:11] Speaker 5: played the way they punch the ball out now. I mean,
[46:14] Speaker 5: it's an incredible brand of football right now.
[46:17] Speaker 4: It really is. No, you know, I was on the
[46:20] Speaker 4: competition committee for a number of years, and I will
[46:23] Speaker 4: tell you, I would have voted no. on the new
[46:27] Speaker 4: kickoff rules wow i don't they're saying they're saying there's
[46:32] Speaker 4: less they did it for so to avoid collisions and
[46:36] Speaker 4: there's i don't see that at all i.
[46:41] Speaker 5: I don't you know what i'd rather have them do
[46:43] Speaker 5: i i would say we're going to give you the
[46:47] Speaker 5: ball on whatever yard line you want to and you
[46:50] Speaker 5: do the math for whatever the percentage of success you
[46:52] Speaker 5: want it to be but it's now fourth and 12,
[46:55] Speaker 5: let's say. If you want to go for it, run
[46:59] Speaker 5: your offense out there and go for it. If you
[47:01] Speaker 5: want to kick it, send the punter out and punt it.
[47:05] Speaker 5: But then it turns into a punt instead of a
[47:07] Speaker 5: kickoff if you're going to kick, but you can go
[47:10] Speaker 5: for it at any time. So you eliminate the onside kick,
[47:14] Speaker 5: bring your quarterback, bring your wide receivers out there, fourth
[47:17] Speaker 5: and 12. You want to play make it, take it,
[47:20] Speaker 5: go for it. If not, we're going to punt the
[47:22] Speaker 5: football and we're going to have two people running down
[47:24] Speaker 5: the field instead of 11 lunatics trying to kill each
[47:26] Speaker 5: other and keep these guys alive.
[47:29] Speaker 4: A little longer.
[47:30] Speaker 2: No, I love that.
[47:31] Speaker 3: Well, Chris Collinsworth is with us, and Chris, it's Softee
[47:34] Speaker 3: real quick, and just going back to what Mike was
[47:36] Speaker 3: asking about with Sam, and I asked Mike earlier kind
[47:38] Speaker 3: of what his rope would be like with Darnold, you know,
[47:41] Speaker 3: is there a point you would get to with these interceptions?
[47:44] Speaker 3: He's got seven the last four games. He's on pace
[47:46] Speaker 3: for 20. He's been sacked 13 times the last three games,
[47:50] Speaker 3: by the way. I mean, are you telling yourself that, hey,
[47:53] Speaker 3: this is my guy for the entire.
[47:55] Speaker 2: Year, and there's nothing he can do to get benched?
[47:58] Speaker 3: Or is there a limit for you before you would
[48:00] Speaker 3: consider giving the ball back to Drew Locke?
[48:04] Speaker 5: Well, I mean, Drew Locke was really good, right? He's
[48:06] Speaker 5: still ranked as one of the top quarterbacks in the league.
[48:09] Speaker 5: So I think it would be crazy to totally dismiss that.
[48:14] Speaker 5: But I think that you tied together the two right things.
[48:17] Speaker 5: and that is that he's been getting hit a lot.
[48:21] Speaker 5: And he's been under pressure even when he hasn't been
[48:24] Speaker 5: getting hit. And I just don't think that works for
[48:28] Speaker 5: almost any quarterback. There may be five or six quarterbacks
[48:31] Speaker 5: in the entire NFL that can function when they're getting
[48:35] Speaker 5: under pressure. So I don't know what the solution is.
[48:38] Speaker 5: It may be leaving more people in the block. It
[48:41] Speaker 5: may be running the football more. but they've got to
[48:44] Speaker 5: find a way to get him comfortable.
[48:47] Speaker 4: And whether it's.
[48:48] Speaker 5: Bootlegs, max protection, whatever it is, they've got to make
[48:53] Speaker 5: him confident because he has taken a lot of shots
[48:58] Speaker 5: with free runners, you know, with people that have had
[49:02] Speaker 5: pretty clean paths to the quarterback. So anytime a quarterback
[49:08] Speaker 5: has bad numbers, whether it's sacks, interceptions, fumbles, whatever it is,
[49:13] Speaker 5: I tend to go back to the source of, okay,
[49:16] Speaker 5: how are they doing running the football? Not as well, right?
[49:20] Speaker 5: as they were last year. How are they doing with
[49:22] Speaker 5: their pass protection? Not as well as they were last year.
[49:26] Speaker 5: So I'd like to see them with those two things
[49:29] Speaker 5: a little more solid, and then I'll give you a
[49:32] Speaker 5: final judgment and tell you whether or not I'd make
[49:35] Speaker 5: that move.
[49:36] Speaker 2: Got it. Well, Chris, we appreciate you joining us again.
[49:38] Speaker 2: This is Dick.
[49:38] Speaker 6: You know, the under-talked about part of this team is
[49:41] Speaker 6: the defense. I mean, almost all of the metrics say
[49:44] Speaker 6: that this Hawks D is even better than last year's
[49:46] Speaker 6: Hawks D.
[49:47] Speaker 2: Some, they're as good as any team.
[49:48] Speaker 6: Yards per play, they're as good as any team since
[49:50] Speaker 6: the 08 Steelers right now through the first six games.
[49:53] Speaker 2: But numbers can lie.
[49:54] Speaker 6: So what you're seeing on film, is that what the
[49:58] Speaker 6: numbers are saying or are the numbers lying a little bit?
[50:02] Speaker 5: No, I think this team is phenomenal on the defensive side.
[50:06] Speaker 5: I just, I really do. There's some really special players
[50:11] Speaker 5: over there. Demarcus Lawrence and Leonard Williams, those two old
[50:16] Speaker 5: guys make me proud, man. I'm glad I'm an old
[50:18] Speaker 5: guy watching them play football over there. It's incredible. I mean,
[50:23] Speaker 5: the hustle and the effort they put forth. Ernest Jones,
[50:26] Speaker 5: a great you know, guy in the middle to lead
[50:29] Speaker 5: this team. Byron Murphy's on his way to being a star.
[50:34] Speaker 5: I mean, he really is. That guy's an amazing athlete inside.
[50:37] Speaker 5: Devin Witherspoon, I can watch play all day. I mean,
[50:41] Speaker 5: he plays like a lunatic out there. And, oh, by
[50:43] Speaker 5: the way, he may be the best cover guy in football.
[50:46] Speaker 5: And Nicky Emanwuri, when we were watching him in the
[50:49] Speaker 5: playoffs and getting ready for the Super Bowl last year,
[50:51] Speaker 5: I just kept shaking my head. I'm like, how is
[50:54] Speaker 5: this guy human? He's that big. He looks like a
[50:56] Speaker 5: linebacker out there playing DB, flying around and just crushing people.
[51:01] Speaker 5: Julian Lowe's playing well. I mean, this is a first-class
[51:05] Speaker 5: defensive football team that if they really get it right,
[51:10] Speaker 5: if they really get on their game the way that
[51:12] Speaker 5: they were in the second half of that Denver game,
[51:15] Speaker 5: I honestly believe that they're going to become the force
[51:17] Speaker 5: that they were at the end of the year, too.
[51:20] Speaker 4: Well, Chris, I can't thank you enough for coming on.
[51:22] Speaker 4: It was really nice talking with you and You know what?
[51:26] Speaker 4: I watch you, and you just get better and better
[51:28] Speaker 4: and better every year. And so I wish I would
[51:32] Speaker 4: have stayed in TV. You know?
[51:34] Speaker 2: Really. We got a spot for you, my man.
[51:38] Speaker 5: Come on up.
[51:39] Speaker 4: No, but, hey, thank you for coming on. We really
[51:41] Speaker 4: appreciate it. And good luck the rest of this season, okay?
[51:45] Speaker 2: Thanks, Chris.
[51:46] Speaker 4: Thank you.
[51:47] Speaker 5: Pleasure, guys. Thank you.
[51:49] Speaker 2: All right, good stuff, man. That was great.
[51:51] Speaker 5: See?
[51:51] Speaker 2: I mean, you don't need us. It's unbelievable.
[51:54] Speaker 3: I thought maybe you kind of needed us to babysit
[51:57] Speaker 3: you a little bit, but.
[51:58] Speaker 2: You really don't. You've really grown into this role. Yeah,
[52:01] Speaker 2: he's graduating. Why don't you try doing 3-7 one day
[52:03] Speaker 2: by yourself? How's that sound? That's a great idea. Hey, listen,
[52:06] Speaker 2: before you go, we've got some news here. I think
[52:09] Speaker 2: it's great.
[52:11] Speaker 3: I think it's been a long time coming that you
[52:13] Speaker 3: deserve it. You've done it before, but you're going to
[52:15] Speaker 3: get quite an honor here. Monday night game against the
[52:19] Speaker 3: Chicago Bears.
[52:22] Speaker 2: Tell people what you're doing before the game.
[52:24] Speaker 4: Well, Seahawks, it was nice. They asked me if I'd
[52:28] Speaker 4: raise the 12-man flag. All right. You know, Monday night football.
[52:32] Speaker 2: I love it.
[52:33] Speaker 4: And now I just have to make sure I can
[52:35] Speaker 4: walk up the stairs to get up there high enough. But, no,
[52:39] Speaker 4: it is quite an honor. And I hope I can
[52:44] Speaker 4: do it with dry eyes.
[52:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that's great, man. You deserve it. You deserve it, man,
[52:49] Speaker 3: no doubt. Do Dick and I get to go up
[52:50] Speaker 3: there with.
[52:51] Speaker 2: You, by the way?
[52:51] Speaker 5: Sure.
[52:52] Speaker 2: That'd be fun, actually.
[52:53] Speaker 5: Why not?
[52:53] Speaker 2: That'd be really cool.
[52:54] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[52:54] Speaker 2: I mean, you know, what do you think of us
[52:56] Speaker 2: for once in your life?
[52:57] Speaker 5: No, I know.
[52:58] Speaker 4: I'll ask, and we'll see if they'll let you.
[53:00] Speaker 2: Yeah. Jackson, you want to come? You want to go
[53:02] Speaker 2: walk up there with Mike?
[53:03] Speaker 4: The heck?
[53:03] Speaker 2: Why not? How about we do a contest?
[53:05] Speaker 3: Invite the KJR listeners to come up there as well. Well,
[53:09] Speaker 3: that's a great honor. So that's Monday night, November the 2nd.
[53:12] Speaker 3: You're doing the 12-man flag for the Bears game.
[53:14] Speaker 5: Yes.
[53:14] Speaker 2: That is awesome. All right, you're the best. Great stuff.
[53:16] Speaker 2: Good to see you.
[53:17] Speaker 4: Thanks, guys.
