[1:12] Speaker 2: How's it going with this new book?
[1:14] Speaker 3: You're gonna have to ask me in like two weeks
[1:16] Speaker 3: because it's not out yet, but people are pre ordering
[1:19] Speaker 3: and Uh, yeah, you know, I would you know, it's
[1:21] Speaker 3: like I would love to say, oh, the response has
[1:23] Speaker 3: been amazing, but nobody has it. You have it, but
[1:25] Speaker 3: you know it's busy time of year.
[1:27] Speaker 1: Tell me about the book, what it's about, What inspired
[1:32] Speaker 1: you to to write it. I mean, you've done other
[1:34] Speaker 1: novels and such in the past, other other other books,
[1:37] Speaker 1: like what was it that made you go? Is this
[1:40] Speaker 1: is your first football like football focused one too?
[1:42] Speaker 3: Second?
[1:42] Speaker 2: Second?
[1:43] Speaker 3: Yeah, My first novel is called Slotback Rhapsody. It was
[1:46] Speaker 3: like twenty eleven and actually the main so that's about
[1:50] Speaker 3: an undersized running back who tries to make it in
[1:53] Speaker 3: the NFL.
[1:55] Speaker 2: Is was it? Was it a precursor to Christian McCaffrey.
[1:58] Speaker 2: Is that with the No?
[1:59] Speaker 3: You know it was Danny woodhead in his Patriots days?
[2:04] Speaker 3: All right, okay, it was It was more like Dan
[2:07] Speaker 3: That was who I had in mind. Is it takes
[2:09] Speaker 3: place in Detroit, But it was Danny Wood It was
[2:12] Speaker 3: who I had in mind. And so then you're right.
[2:16] Speaker 3: I brought wrote a bunch of other books and came
[2:18] Speaker 3: back to football as a subject matter for this one.
[2:21] Speaker 3: And it's a sequel. The same character from the first
[2:24] Speaker 3: one is one of the main characters in this one, gotcha.
[2:28] Speaker 3: This one's a lot more ambitious and has a lot
[2:31] Speaker 3: of other characters in it and is about the season
[2:35] Speaker 3: in a life and the team happens to have somebody
[2:39] Speaker 3: who might be a serial killer who's murdering women on
[2:42] Speaker 3: the team. Oh and so, uh so the character from
[2:47] Speaker 3: Slotback no longer plays he's or tired, and they bring
[2:52] Speaker 3: him in to like investigate the things that they cannot
[2:56] Speaker 3: be seen investigating themselves internally, Like see if you can
[3:00] Speaker 3: figure this out, they like ask them. Yeah. Yeah, So
[3:03] Speaker 3: he infiltrates the team and then we meet many of
[3:05] Speaker 3: the team members and there's a lot of fun game
[3:08] Speaker 3: action and stuff, and uh yeah. It's what inspired me
[3:12] Speaker 3: to write it, I guess, was my own feelings of
[3:16] Speaker 3: moral compromise about being a barnacle on the side of
[3:18] Speaker 3: professional football.
[3:20] Speaker 2: Yeah. Do you ever feel that way?
[3:24] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[3:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel that way all the time. Yeah. I
[3:26] Speaker 2: mean it's a there's definitely.
[3:28] Speaker 1: Like a grossness to what we do, you know, for
[3:31] Speaker 1: a living that I think that like it's only human
[3:34] Speaker 1: to feel that way. I think it's important that to
[3:36] Speaker 1: like talk about that on shows sometimes and and and
[3:40] Speaker 1: remind people that we feel that way for sure. You know,
[3:42] Speaker 1: like it's very easy for you know, what we're doing
[3:45] Speaker 1: to essentially just minimize what these athletes are going through
[3:50] Speaker 1: and doing on a football field for our entertainment, you know,
[3:52] Speaker 1: and treating them as like they're not people sometimes in
[3:55] Speaker 1: the way that we analyze fantasy football. And so yeah,
[3:58] Speaker 1: I mean I feel that way all the time, all
[4:00] Speaker 1: the time.
[4:01] Speaker 3: Plus just there's that aspect of it, the sacrifice, the
[4:04] Speaker 3: churn of human flesh, you know, human flesh. There's that
[4:08] Speaker 3: side of it, and the compromises that they have to
[4:11] Speaker 3: go through to get put themselves through it, the bad
[4:14] Speaker 3: behavior that that can sometimes then result in that we
[4:19] Speaker 3: then wind up either excusing or waving away, and certainly
[4:22] Speaker 3: the league waves away. And then to me my way
[4:26] Speaker 3: of thinking, worst of all is kind of the too
[4:29] Speaker 3: big to fail nature of the billionaires and the business
[4:34] Speaker 3: and Roger Goodell and the whole bread and circus and nonsense,
[4:40] Speaker 3: as though they're smart, as though they've.
[4:42] Speaker 2: Done anything other than literally.
[4:45] Speaker 3: Just accidentally find the goose that lads the golden eggs
[4:49] Speaker 3: or be the lucky sperm club of such a person,
[4:52] Speaker 3: and then that somehow, because they're billionaires, and own these teams,
[4:56] Speaker 3: grants them some sort of claim to in elect or
[5:01] Speaker 3: savvy or any anything, and then they get to hold
[5:04] Speaker 3: communities hostage. The Bears are going through this right now,
[5:07] Speaker 3: where yeah, give us public money that we don't need,
[5:11] Speaker 3: but we can ask for it. We can hold a
[5:13] Speaker 3: gun to your head, so we're just gonna do it.
[5:15] Speaker 3: Like yeah, it's all pretty nauseating in some ways. And
[5:19] Speaker 3: people who get turned off of the NFL. I have
[5:21] Speaker 3: plenty of friends. I have a really close friend who's
[5:25] Speaker 3: been in my fantasy leagues for more than a decade.
[5:28] Speaker 3: This year he quit, and he didn't he loved the
[5:32] Speaker 3: camaraderie of fantasy we all do, it's my favorite part
[5:35] Speaker 3: of it. Loved it, right, He just didn't want to
[5:38] Speaker 3: watch football anymore.
[5:39] Speaker 1: Yeah, just yeah, I mean yeah, there's definitely there's definitely
[5:43] Speaker 1: that angle to it, and so yeah, I mean I
[5:44] Speaker 1: think it's important to like have that out there that
[5:47] Speaker 1: you know, we're self aware enough to understand that this
[5:52] Speaker 1: can be gross sometimes as we get, you know, into
[5:54] Speaker 1: this show and we're gonna be talking about, Oh, this guy's.
[5:57] Speaker 2: Bad at this thing, and like, you know.
[5:59] Speaker 3: It's like that, but JJ, that's almost the point though,
[6:02] Speaker 3: like I still love it. I'm not telling you I
[6:06] Speaker 3: don't love it. I'm not telling you that you watching
[6:09] Speaker 3: and listening shouldn't love it. Please continue to love it.
[6:11] Speaker 3: It helps me and JJ a lot if you continue
[6:13] Speaker 3: to love it. So all I'm trying to say is
[6:17] Speaker 3: it's complicated and people going la la la la la.
[6:21] Speaker 3: I don't think that's really living in the real world.
[6:23] Speaker 3: And anyway, why did I write the book is to
[6:25] Speaker 3: try to sort of tap into some of those feelings.
[6:27] Speaker 3: So the book is definitely not all like bludgeting people
[6:31] Speaker 3: saying bad NFL, bad NFL. It's just it's just sort
[6:35] Speaker 3: of trying to say it's very complicated, and there's a
[6:38] Speaker 3: lot of stuff that goes on that is very weird
[6:41] Speaker 3: and not awesome, but then some stuff that's totally awesome
[6:46] Speaker 3: and incredible. And how many common spaces do we have
[6:49] Speaker 3: left in America?
[6:51] Speaker 2: I know that's the thing too.
[6:53] Speaker 1: There's so much good that Yeah, there's so much good
[6:55] Speaker 1: that comes out of this game too that can't be dismissed.
[6:59] Speaker 1: I mean, even even the players themselves get like, you know,
[7:03] Speaker 1: their own stories where they're able to to find something
[7:06] Speaker 1: that they're able to make the amount of money they're
[7:09] Speaker 1: making doing it, and they're you know, obviously becoming something
[7:12] Speaker 1: that they could only dream of becoming. And they're you know, like,
[7:16] Speaker 1: that's what I love about the NFL draft most is
[7:18] Speaker 1: just the story and like seeing people achieving their goals
[7:21] Speaker 1: in real time, Like to me, that's amazing. Right, And
[7:24] Speaker 1: then I'm sitting there and I'm writing up the prospect
[7:26] Speaker 1: profiles being like, oh, yeah, this guy's you know, breakout
[7:29] Speaker 1: score with such Yeah, right right, But yeah, like that's
[7:33] Speaker 1: the dichotomy, Like that's the you know, the back and
[7:36] Speaker 1: forth that I think any healthy fantasy analyst is probably
[7:40] Speaker 1: you know, going through and thinking about.
[7:41] Speaker 2: But again, like it's good to at.
[7:42] Speaker 1: Least voice that and you get to put it out
[7:44] Speaker 1: there and you know, metaphorically and such in a in
[7:47] Speaker 1: a book the way that you're doing.
[7:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm really proud of it.
[7:50] Speaker 3: I hope people if you're interested in reading fiction, I'll
[7:52] Speaker 3: helpe you give you give it a shot. If you
[7:54] Speaker 3: have ever listened to anything I do. I did the audiobook. Also,
[7:56] Speaker 3: there's an ebook. You can pre order it all go
[7:59] Speaker 3: to Harris Football. There are links. I'm doing a tour.
[8:02] Speaker 3: I mean, this is the first reading tour that I've
[8:04] Speaker 3: ever done. Uh yeah, that sounds like fun though, right, yes,
[8:08] Speaker 3: because mostly it's just an excuse to do meetups.
[8:10] Speaker 2: And I've done a lot. I've done a ton.
[8:13] Speaker 3: Of meetups up with fans of my show.
[8:16] Speaker 2: And.
[8:17] Speaker 3: They're so fun. People are so nice. My god, it's
[8:20] Speaker 3: just what, like what a hardship to walk into a
[8:24] Speaker 3: room where everybody likes what you do? You know, it's
[8:26] Speaker 3: now so what is me? It's so hard? But these
[8:29] Speaker 3: are towns I've never done meetups in. So Sunday is Seattle.
[8:34] Speaker 3: It's actually Tacoma, but Seattle area. Monday is Portland, Tuesday
[8:39] Speaker 3: is Vegas, Wednesday is Phoenix.
[8:42] Speaker 2: Wow.
[8:43] Speaker 3: So for cities, four days, a lot of travel, and
[8:46] Speaker 3: I'm going to make a podcast in the morning from
[8:48] Speaker 3: the hotel at each at each site.
[8:50] Speaker 2: Are you yeah?
[8:51] Speaker 1: I was gonna ask, Yeah, you did the Almanac this year.
[8:54] Speaker 1: I know you started. It was the last year you
[8:55] Speaker 1: started doing it again, like you took a little bit
[8:56] Speaker 1: of a break with it and then, But like, I mean,
[8:59] Speaker 1: that's a lot of writing in general. Like you clearly,
[9:03] Speaker 1: I mean you're very You're a very great writer. And
[9:06] Speaker 1: but like that obviously is just a part of you.
[9:09] Speaker 1: But I know for me, like I do the draft
[9:12] Speaker 1: guide right, and it's you know a lot of words
[9:14] Speaker 1: and a lot of like my brain's just completely fried.
[9:16] Speaker 1: So I imagine that you're completely fried right now after
[9:18] Speaker 1: doing both the Almanac and you know, the book stuff.
[9:21] Speaker 2: I'm okay.
[9:21] Speaker 3: I mean, this book's been done for a while because
[9:23] Speaker 3: it takes a long time that's putting it together, you know,
[9:26] Speaker 3: like I didn't have a cover in April, but like
[9:29] Speaker 3: the book was done in April, right, I've been I've
[9:32] Speaker 3: been writing another book. But yeah, I mean the Almanac
[9:35] Speaker 3: is a big is a big summit to climb. I mean,
[9:40] Speaker 3: you do a guide, so like you know, it's it's
[9:42] Speaker 3: all it's pretty all consuming essentially. You know, I'm writing
[9:46] Speaker 3: a profile for two hundred and thirty two hundred and
[9:48] Speaker 3: forty players. There's no way to do it unless like
[9:52] Speaker 3: every day I just make myself write five mm hmm.
[9:55] Speaker 3: So like I'll go, I'll go do something else, usually
[10:00] Speaker 3: go to the coffee shop and work on writing fiction,
[10:02] Speaker 3: and then I'll go to the gym. And then the
[10:04] Speaker 3: afternoon it's like, well, I got to write five profiles.
[10:11] Speaker 3: And the good thing about that is like I'm loopy
[10:13] Speaker 3: at that point, and so I'm mostly just trying to
[10:16] Speaker 3: make a joke each you know, like a lot of those,
[10:19] Speaker 3: but you get a copy every year live. Yeah, Like,
[10:22] Speaker 3: you know, I hope there's good football stuff in there,
[10:24] Speaker 3: but I'm also just trying to make people laugh, so
[10:26] Speaker 3: hopefully sure, Yeah, of course, Yeah.
[10:29] Speaker 1: All right, let's get into some of these some of
[10:31] Speaker 1: these topics. I always like talking to you about fantasy
[10:35] Speaker 1: and about football in general, because you know, we approach
[10:37] Speaker 1: things from a different angle. But I've said this before,
[10:41] Speaker 1: even when you were on Perspectives last time. It's like
[10:44] Speaker 1: people will put you in a box of like what
[10:46] Speaker 1: kind of analyst you are without real life? You know,
[10:48] Speaker 1: like I did a show with you like a week
[10:51] Speaker 1: and a half ago where we talked about film only,
[10:54] Speaker 1: you know, like it was just we're just talking about
[10:56] Speaker 1: guys that we like watching and you know, going through
[10:58] Speaker 1: that and it's not And I mean I've seen in
[11:00] Speaker 1: the in the almanac, like you're doing little research stuff
[11:04] Speaker 1: within there.
[11:05] Speaker 2: That's that's data driven. That's right, yep.
[11:07] Speaker 1: But I but I do appreciate how you are very
[11:12] Speaker 1: very willing to just say this is what I believe,
[11:15] Speaker 1: and I'm not saying you're a moron if you don't
[11:17] Speaker 1: believe it. But I'm telling you that I believe this
[11:19] Speaker 1: thing right, And so I want to start this off
[11:22] Speaker 1: by asking you what's something that you think about valuating
[11:25] Speaker 1: fantasy football players that you think the rest of the
[11:27] Speaker 1: fantasy industry, whether analysts are just players, you know, managers
[11:32] Speaker 1: just kind of get fundamentally wrong.
[11:34] Speaker 3: The one thing I'm right and everybody else is wrong.
[11:36] Speaker 3: That's that's along with JJ NO. I mean, you know,
[11:41] Speaker 3: it feels like it changed a little bit this year,
[11:43] Speaker 3: only because last year running backs had their moment and
[11:47] Speaker 3: wide receivers got hurt. But it does feel like this
[11:51] Speaker 3: year things tilted a little more towards understanding where there's
[11:55] Speaker 3: real scarcity and yet still not enough. And to my
[12:00] Speaker 3: way of thinking, it's just a numbers game. I don't
[12:03] Speaker 3: feel like people fully understand anybody who like I'm in
[12:07] Speaker 3: the middle of doing I read at Ama right now,
[12:09] Speaker 3: take a little break, do this show, which is you know,
[12:12] Speaker 3: very thank you for having me. I'm really really excited
[12:14] Speaker 3: to be here, of course, and you know people are like, okay,
[12:17] Speaker 3: so I have the two pic and I'm gonna go
[12:19] Speaker 3: chase and then I'm gonna go and I'm thinking to myself,
[12:23] Speaker 3: don't do that. Who's telling me to do that? You
[12:25] Speaker 3: don't have to do that. Take a running back? What
[12:27] Speaker 3: are you doing? Just from a pure like replacement value
[12:31] Speaker 3: over replacement level, there's just no substitute for running back.
[12:37] Speaker 3: And we've lived through the era of zero RB. It
[12:41] Speaker 3: feels like that's maybe going away a little bit. But
[12:43] Speaker 3: now it's been replaced by hero RB, which is that
[12:47] Speaker 3: even a thing?
[12:48] Speaker 2: Hero RB?
[12:49] Speaker 3: Isn't that what people who like RB's always said, make
[12:51] Speaker 3: sure you get one. I don't know, but anyway, right, Yeah,
[12:56] Speaker 3: I guess the place where I've always kind of put
[12:59] Speaker 3: my steak has been I'm agnostic.
[13:02] Speaker 2: I don't care.
[13:03] Speaker 3: I just want to find the places where there's the
[13:06] Speaker 3: best value over the guys I can get as replacements.
[13:09] Speaker 3: And for as long as I've been doing it, it's
[13:11] Speaker 3: been running backs. And it feels like, depending on what
[13:13] Speaker 3: happened last year, the market keeps vacillating back and forth,
[13:17] Speaker 3: and I just don't vacillate.
[13:18] Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that that's a really important point.
[13:21] Speaker 1: Is like all the research that I've done for the
[13:23] Speaker 1: Draft guid each year, because the Draft guide is like
[13:25] Speaker 1: very much game theory, you know, focused and such before
[13:28] Speaker 1: I get into like player takes and you know, guys
[13:30] Speaker 1: I've been targeting all that.
[13:31] Speaker 2: Kind of stuff.
[13:32] Speaker 1: The one thing that's been consistent through every single draft
[13:34] Speaker 1: guide is that if you have an elite running back,
[13:36] Speaker 1: you have the best advantage, the greatest advantage in fantasy
[13:40] Speaker 1: football period, right Like, if you have that player and
[13:43] Speaker 1: you gotta spend money to make money, like you gotta
[13:46] Speaker 1: pay up to get these guys. Generally, you know, if
[13:49] Speaker 1: you're going to you know, acquire one of those players,
[13:52] Speaker 1: and if you don't, like it's just gonna be very,
[13:54] Speaker 1: very difficult to have the game breaking the most important.
[13:58] Speaker 2: Players, you know, in.
[14:01] Speaker 1: I do think that the current NFL meta, I'd be
[14:04] Speaker 1: curious to hear your thoughts on this, but like the
[14:06] Speaker 1: current NFL meta and the way that you know, we
[14:09] Speaker 1: were seeing a little bit more heavy personnel and that's
[14:12] Speaker 1: obviously led to you know, run heavier offenses than than
[14:16] Speaker 1: what we've at least seen over the last like five
[14:17] Speaker 1: ten years. I mean, last year were the lowest pass
[14:19] Speaker 1: rate since at least like twenty eleven, so it was
[14:22] Speaker 1: a lot less pass heavy than other seasons. And I
[14:26] Speaker 1: think that you know, the response to that from some
[14:28] Speaker 1: people is like, oh, I have to draft running backs
[14:31] Speaker 1: really really early now, which is true. I think that
[14:34] Speaker 1: you should be drafting running backs early. But to the
[14:37] Speaker 1: to the the counter to that would be, I mean
[14:40] Speaker 1: you do rankings every week. I mean last year, when
[14:43] Speaker 1: I would rank wide receivers, I'm like, Okay, there's eight
[14:46] Speaker 1: guys that are good that I that I know can
[14:49] Speaker 1: be you know, difference making type players. And then once
[14:53] Speaker 1: I get to that like next tier, it's just the
[14:55] Speaker 1: same dude, until like wide receiver thirty, right, Like it's.
[14:58] Speaker 2: The same clunsure.
[15:00] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[15:00] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[15:00] Speaker 1: And so that's the hardest part for me this season
[15:03] Speaker 1: is balancing because like there are those like game changing
[15:06] Speaker 1: wide receivers that in this meta right where you have
[15:09] Speaker 1: more twelve thirteen personnel and there's fewer you know, there's
[15:13] Speaker 1: fewer wide receivers in the field, but then those wide
[15:15] Speaker 1: receivers also get hyper targeted a little bit more because
[15:18] Speaker 1: the alternative is, Okay, we're gonna throw to this you know,
[15:21] Speaker 1: AJ Barner or whoever, you know, some some random tight
[15:24] Speaker 1: end that is fine but very replacement level. And then
[15:27] Speaker 1: you kind of get like I think, I mean Jackson
[15:29] Speaker 1: Smith and jigg was awesome. Don't get me wrong, like
[15:30] Speaker 1: it's a phenomenal wide receiver. But I do think schematically
[15:33] Speaker 1: it helped that they ran the offense the way they
[15:36] Speaker 1: did because it force fed some of those looks his way.
[15:40] Speaker 1: And so, you know, I'm curious how you feel about
[15:42] Speaker 1: like those elite wide receivers that we can pitpoint. But
[15:45] Speaker 1: you know, on the flip side, we could sit here
[15:46] Speaker 1: and say we thought that about Justin Jefferson last year
[15:49] Speaker 1: and look how that ended up.
[15:49] Speaker 2: You know. So so I get that argument to but
[15:51] Speaker 2: where are you at with with that? In general?
[15:53] Speaker 3: You know, the biggest piece of advice if I can
[15:55] Speaker 3: always reduce it to a bumper sticker as draft players
[15:58] Speaker 3: not positions. And you know, again this reddit is on
[16:03] Speaker 3: my mind and people are like, okay, so what do
[16:05] Speaker 3: you think about two running backs in the first three rounds?
[16:08] Speaker 3: And I go, oh my god, it depends on the
[16:10] Speaker 3: running backs, I ge't, you know, And so somebody else said, hey,
[16:15] Speaker 3: I know, you say always take a running back in
[16:16] Speaker 3: the first round, Like, no, I don't. I have Jamar
[16:19] Speaker 3: Chase in a standard league with no PPR as my
[16:22] Speaker 3: number six player, which means if my first five running
[16:26] Speaker 3: backs are gone? Am I taking Jamar Chase number six?
[16:28] Speaker 3: Your damn right, I am? Because he is an unbelievable
[16:32] Speaker 3: player and one of the like you said, one of
[16:34] Speaker 3: the whether you want to call it nine or maybe
[16:37] Speaker 3: four this year, I don't know how one hundred percent
[16:41] Speaker 3: like fine, Yes, I'm not a receiver. Isn't quite the
[16:45] Speaker 3: scarce commodity that running back is, but it's the second
[16:48] Speaker 3: most scarce, and if I can get the best guy, absolutely,
[16:50] Speaker 3: I'm going to adjust. I'm going to deal with it.
[16:52] Speaker 3: What you're saying is very well said. The thing about
[16:55] Speaker 3: thirteen personnel and twelve personnel and let's face it, three
[16:59] Speaker 3: wide the base formation of the NFL.
[17:01] Speaker 2: It is yeah, you still see a lot.
[17:03] Speaker 3: So we still see an unbelievable churn of receivers in
[17:05] Speaker 3: any given game like six or set. We didn't live,
[17:09] Speaker 3: You and I did not grow up in a world
[17:10] Speaker 3: where seven receivers on a given team were running routes
[17:13] Speaker 3: in a game, right, we would have our heads would
[17:16] Speaker 3: have exploded. How are we supposed to play fantasy with
[17:17] Speaker 3: this nonsense where you're telling me, you know some random
[17:21] Speaker 3: schmo is Efton Chisholm has a chance to catch three
[17:25] Speaker 3: passes in a week and ruin my day. You know,
[17:27] Speaker 3: the reason that wide receiver is so flat beyond what
[17:32] Speaker 3: we hope are the elite guys. I might argue three
[17:35] Speaker 3: or four elite guys is because of that churn and
[17:39] Speaker 3: because three wide is still the base formation. But yeah,
[17:42] Speaker 3: when you have three wide and then you're not throwing
[17:45] Speaker 3: out a three wide more, which is definitely true, trying
[17:48] Speaker 3: to stretch a defense out and run that creates even
[17:51] Speaker 3: more flatness. Because I mean Nico Collins. I love Nico Collins.
[17:55] Speaker 3: I think he's a terrific player. He's in my top twelve.
[17:58] Speaker 3: I view as a rock sow wide receiver one. Drake London,
[18:03] Speaker 3: rock solid wide receiver one in my ranks, number seven
[18:05] Speaker 3: or something in my ranks. Love them. I'm going to
[18:08] Speaker 3: draft these guys and know that because of the way
[18:10] Speaker 3: these teams call plays and the way defenses are creating
[18:14] Speaker 3: hard shells at umbrellas, we're back to Legion of Boom
[18:18] Speaker 3: ten years ago, fifteen years ago. I'm going to get
[18:20] Speaker 3: weeks out of Drake London Nico Collins When they do
[18:22] Speaker 3: two for seventeen, I just am And that's something that
[18:29] Speaker 3: has to be built in because there's very few receivers
[18:31] Speaker 3: for that for whom that is not the case because
[18:34] Speaker 3: it is such a rotational three wide league. With absolutely right,
[18:42] Speaker 3: one hundred percent agree that the trends also are You're
[18:45] Speaker 3: also going to get some more plays where all the
[18:47] Speaker 3: receivers sit and the guys are running routes, are not
[18:49] Speaker 3: going to get the ball, and they're simply going to
[18:52] Speaker 3: run more. It just creates this incredible flatness at wide
[18:56] Speaker 3: receiver that makes me think I all the time, like
[19:01] Speaker 3: I can't swear to you that like George Pickens is
[19:05] Speaker 3: going to have a lot more Fantasy points than Chris Godwin.
[19:08] Speaker 3: I mean, I really can't. Chris Godwin's awesome, He's a
[19:12] Speaker 3: really good player. He could wind up wide receiver eight,
[19:16] Speaker 3: and Picketts could wide up receiver eight eighteen, and neother
[19:19] Speaker 3: one gets hurt because the difference between eight and eighteen
[19:22] Speaker 3: is like fifty yards and two touchdowns because it's so
[19:25] Speaker 3: freaking flat. So I certainly in draft strategies, am very
[19:30] Speaker 3: open to taking those elite wide receivers if the running
[19:33] Speaker 3: backs I don't want to take are gone. Yeah, but
[19:37] Speaker 3: I feel best firing shots at Chris Godwin and his
[19:41] Speaker 3: like in the sixth, seventh, eighth as opposed to going, well,
[19:45] Speaker 3: maybe Chris Rodriguez takes over that job. You know, I
[19:49] Speaker 3: feel like I got a much better shot at hitting
[19:51] Speaker 3: with the wide receivers.
[19:53] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[19:53] Speaker 1: I always kind of like, again going back to like
[19:55] Speaker 1: some of the draft guide stuff, I would say that
[19:57] Speaker 1: like if the normal fantasy manager slash, the way that
[20:01] Speaker 1: ADP generally falls is a zero to one hundred, where
[20:05] Speaker 1: like you know, one year it's zero, in the next year,
[20:09] Speaker 1: everything kind of flips and people just kind of overcorrect
[20:11] Speaker 1: and overreact to what happened that previous season, which we
[20:14] Speaker 1: know happens all the time. Yeah, I try to just
[20:16] Speaker 1: stay in at like thirty to seventy range, you know,
[20:18] Speaker 1: in the way that like I'm trying to strategy and
[20:21] Speaker 1: fantasy football is has become and I'm look I come
[20:24] Speaker 1: from literally like that's how I started doing all of this,
[20:28] Speaker 1: was like doing a lot of the strategy game theory
[20:31] Speaker 1: work and stuff. But it's almost gotten to the point
[20:33] Speaker 1: where people are way too strict with it and going
[20:37] Speaker 1: into their drafts and they say, I'm gonna go zero RB,
[20:40] Speaker 1: I'm gonna go The reason you should understand strategy is
[20:43] Speaker 1: to know how to react when things are going down
[20:45] Speaker 1: in your draft. Right, it's no different than like strategy
[20:48] Speaker 1: in war or something, right like where like, oh, we're.
[20:51] Speaker 2: Expecting this, but we don't know if this is gonna go.
[20:53] Speaker 1: But I'm smart enough to know because I've been researching
[20:55] Speaker 1: this and I've been thinking about this so much that
[20:57] Speaker 1: when this thing happens, I can react to this, and
[20:59] Speaker 1: then therefore where I can put together a really solid
[21:02] Speaker 1: you know it similar to like just understanding where tier
[21:04] Speaker 1: breaks are, where like there's drop offs that occur, and
[21:07] Speaker 1: who's available and who's unavailable, and so like it's almost
[21:10] Speaker 1: it's it's weird because I feel this is not the
[21:13] Speaker 1: position I would would have taken ten years ago, because
[21:16] Speaker 1: ten years ago was very much a people walking into
[21:19] Speaker 1: drafts and just being like I'm just gonna pick whoever's
[21:21] Speaker 1: at the top of my board.
[21:22] Speaker 2: And not really think about roster construction and like what
[21:25] Speaker 2: I can get later.
[21:26] Speaker 1: And now it's just this like really really harsh way
[21:30] Speaker 1: of attacking drafts when it just feels a little wrong,
[21:32] Speaker 1: Like like you can win with many, many different draft rategies,
[21:36] Speaker 1: and I would argue that a lot of different like
[21:38] Speaker 1: there are better draft strategies than others, obviously, but you
[21:40] Speaker 1: do have to be reactive. Like if you're sitting in
[21:43] Speaker 1: you know, round two and only running backs have been drafted,
[21:47] Speaker 1: and Jamar Chase is sitting there, but you're like, I'm
[21:49] Speaker 1: still running back right, It's like it's like, no, but
[21:53] Speaker 1: I went into this draft thing.
[21:54] Speaker 2: I was gonna go rb RB.
[21:56] Speaker 1: I've gotta go rb RB, So I'm gonna pass on
[21:58] Speaker 1: Jamar Chase here instead of drafted.
[22:00] Speaker 2: I don't know, like uh, Javonte Williams or something like that.
[22:03] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[22:04] Speaker 1: I just think there's been like this like overthinking of
[22:07] Speaker 1: the strategy side at this point instead of really focusing
[22:10] Speaker 1: on like why we're talking about strategy in the first place.
[22:13] Speaker 3: I mean, not to keep flattering ourselves with comparisons, but
[22:17] Speaker 3: it's like chess. You know, people memorize openings, and they'll
[22:20] Speaker 3: memorize pretty far into openings and they'll you know, this
[22:23] Speaker 3: is what I do, this is what I do, and
[22:25] Speaker 3: then the moment you don't do the book move, they go,
[22:29] Speaker 3: oh crap, you were supposed to move the night, and
[22:34] Speaker 3: now that you didn't move the night, I don't know
[22:35] Speaker 3: what the line is, you know, And then they they
[22:37] Speaker 3: don't have a deep understanding of the actual position. They
[22:40] Speaker 3: just knew what they memorized in the opening.
[22:42] Speaker 1: Someone say, that's the equivalent of a Mike Tomlin defense,
[22:45] Speaker 1: right where it's the same thing every week and it
[22:50] Speaker 1: works against some teams, but then some teams know how
[22:52] Speaker 1: to beat it, and he's just like, Oh, I don't
[22:54] Speaker 1: know how to adjust.
[22:55] Speaker 2: That's what we do, right.
[22:59] Speaker 1: I do want to ask you to because obviously you
[23:01] Speaker 1: come from a film perspective with a lot of your work,
[23:04] Speaker 1: and I appreciate that kind of stuff when I'm a listener,
[23:08] Speaker 1: because it's just the stuff that I don't need to
[23:11] Speaker 1: listen to other data people necessarily because I feel comfortable
[23:14] Speaker 1: with like the conclusions I'm coming to and like what
[23:16] Speaker 1: I'm looking at and whatnot. But I always love hearing,
[23:19] Speaker 1: you know, other perspectives with film and such.
[23:21] Speaker 2: But I am curious to put you on the spot
[23:24] Speaker 2: a little bit.
[23:25] Speaker 1: What's something that the analytics side of fantasy football has
[23:28] Speaker 1: sort of convinced you of over the years that you
[23:31] Speaker 1: may not have uncovered, you know, or thought otherwise as
[23:35] Speaker 1: you're doing the work that you're doing.
[23:37] Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, I love the conversations you know, I'm
[23:41] Speaker 3: never I just don't want them to be like the
[23:43] Speaker 3: sole drivers behind things. But yeah, like I don't think
[23:47] Speaker 3: I paid attention to like air yards at the target
[23:50] Speaker 3: as much. That's a nice, simple, little I mean that's
[23:54] Speaker 3: become that's even just in the past few years. Doesn't
[23:58] Speaker 3: it feel like that one has become like so mainstream. Oh,
[24:01] Speaker 3: it's like it's like just part of like the average
[24:04] Speaker 3: player understands.
[24:05] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[24:06] Speaker 3: Yeah, and like eight off for receivers being very important.
[24:11] Speaker 3: You know, I'd say I'll look at expected numbers. Yeah,
[24:19] Speaker 3: and honestly I will like use them if they make
[24:21] Speaker 3: my point, and if they don't, I'll just be like
[24:23] Speaker 3: I didn't. I don't know what you're talking about. I
[24:25] Speaker 3: didn't see it, but you know, I think it's I'm
[24:28] Speaker 3: glad it's there. I'm I'm interested to see what it says.
[24:32] Speaker 3: I don't really know that like wind share, wind shares
[24:35] Speaker 3: added per play, that that stuff, I don't really buy
[24:38] Speaker 3: too much. But but yeah, for sure, I mean, like
[24:41] Speaker 3: you said, in those sections of the AMANAC where I
[24:44] Speaker 3: do the little research projects, I'm I'm intending that to
[24:47] Speaker 3: be somewhat of a nod.
[24:49] Speaker 2: It's not it's not.
[24:49] Speaker 3: Always an analytic question, but sometimes it is and and
[24:54] Speaker 3: have it be like, well, how often has thirty four
[24:58] Speaker 3: year old wide receiver you know, acted like a wide
[25:01] Speaker 3: receiver one or wide receiver two. I mean, I think
[25:03] Speaker 3: that's that's kind of analytics, you know, to some degree,
[25:07] Speaker 3: and that stuff is gives context that I find to
[25:10] Speaker 3: be incredibly helpful.
[25:11] Speaker 1: That's the stuff that I love to lean on as
[25:14] Speaker 1: like a guide is the trends type stuff, right, and
[25:18] Speaker 1: not to say that like I do actually think that
[25:22] Speaker 1: there's a lot of over analysis.
[25:23] Speaker 2: I mean, shocker, I mean you'll definitely agree with it.
[25:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of over analysis with numbers that
[25:32] Speaker 1: have not been tested in terms of them being predictive whatsoever. Right,
[25:38] Speaker 1: Like you go on Twitter and it's interesting to maybe
[25:40] Speaker 1: look at but it's really really easy to then have
[25:43] Speaker 1: people kind of like latch onto whatever this analyst is
[25:46] Speaker 1: saying or what have you. And I mean people could
[25:48] Speaker 1: then come to me and be like, well, this person
[25:50] Speaker 1: said this on Twitter and this is the metric that
[25:52] Speaker 1: they were citing and whatever, and I'm like that's cool.
[25:56] Speaker 1: I just I want to know how valid that metric
[25:59] Speaker 1: is to begin with, you know, like, how how important
[26:02] Speaker 1: that kind of metric is before I'm just blindly following. Now,
[26:05] Speaker 1: some metrics are obviously going to be like somewhat intuitive,
[26:07] Speaker 1: and they're obviously if you're looking at like usage on
[26:10] Speaker 1: third down and long or something like that for a
[26:13] Speaker 1: running back and seeing like if they're you know, rotating
[26:15] Speaker 1: running backs and getting you know, data that way to
[26:18] Speaker 1: just understand deployment in the way that.
[26:19] Speaker 2: Teams are kind of using their players.
[26:21] Speaker 1: That's one thing I'm saying more so of like these
[26:24] Speaker 1: proprietary metrics that are out there that kind of look
[26:27] Speaker 1: like they make sense on paper, but they are not
[26:30] Speaker 1: necessarily predictive whatsoever. And so that's kind of like the
[26:33] Speaker 1: angle that late Round's always gone with. And I hired
[26:35] Speaker 1: Brandon goadula on in January to sort of like dig
[26:38] Speaker 1: into that stuff like our our newsletters just basically Brandon
[26:42] Speaker 1: digging into does catchable targets rate matter? You know, it's
[26:46] Speaker 1: a metric that people throw out there all the time.
[26:48] Speaker 1: But how predictive and how meaningful is it?
[26:50] Speaker 2: Yeah? And you know it, a.
[26:52] Speaker 1: Lot of these metrics are like they matter at the extremes,
[26:54] Speaker 1: but they don't really matter for the bulk of the players.
[26:57] Speaker 3: You know what I mean, yeah, I do, and and
[26:59] Speaker 3: there's such a difference between these high you would consider
[27:02] Speaker 3: them to be almost like high fructose highly processed stats that,
[27:07] Speaker 3: like you said, sometimes are proprietary or sometimes I just
[27:09] Speaker 3: don't they don't really make any intuitive sense about how
[27:12] Speaker 3: they're coming up. Oh. Trust it's a pretty complicated formula,
[27:16] Speaker 3: but it works. We came up with it as opposed
[27:18] Speaker 3: to things, like you said, like observable things that are
[27:21] Speaker 3: simply converted to math. Those are really very very useful
[27:25] Speaker 3: as background noise that I'm constantly looking at, you know,
[27:28] Speaker 3: I'm We're constantly like, well, how many routes did he
[27:32] Speaker 3: run on third down? Like yeah, you know, that's hugely
[27:35] Speaker 3: important to say that there's no data in what I do,
[27:39] Speaker 3: or I mean to say that there's no film what
[27:41] Speaker 3: you do. I know from personal experience, you watch every
[27:43] Speaker 3: damn game. So like the idea that there's some I
[27:47] Speaker 3: think we do a lot of the same things, and
[27:49] Speaker 3: you know, absolutely there's It would be impossible for me
[27:52] Speaker 3: to do my job without that, without this kind of
[27:54] Speaker 3: observable order ordering of what happened into some consumable numbers
[28:00] Speaker 3: that I can then make understand with what I'm observing.
[28:03] Speaker 3: That's such a massive important of what I part of
[28:05] Speaker 3: what I do.
[28:06] Speaker 1: It's impossible to know after watching a game exactly how
[28:09] Speaker 1: many routes a player round of.
[28:10] Speaker 3: Course and wipes out and like, you know, did they
[28:15] Speaker 3: run the route beyond ten yards? Like that's all amazing
[28:18] Speaker 3: stuff to know, I really important, right, Yeah?
[28:21] Speaker 1: Is there a player trait that you think fantasy analysts
[28:24] Speaker 1: tend to overrate? Like can be any position, just like
[28:26] Speaker 1: a trait that you think that you know, I mean,
[28:30] Speaker 1: I guess I already phrased it.
[28:31] Speaker 2: The fantasy analysts end up overrating.
[28:33] Speaker 3: I mean, it's the combine forty time, and it's probably
[28:36] Speaker 3: more for running backs than anything else. It's just it's
[28:41] Speaker 3: it's wild, it's out of control. It's it's it's as
[28:44] Speaker 3: if Raheem Mostert never happened. They just forgot. And I'm
[28:49] Speaker 3: I mean, my poster child for that right now is
[28:52] Speaker 3: Omary and Hampton. Where I'm not saying he's bad. I
[28:57] Speaker 3: don't really know. I guess you really can't come out
[28:59] Speaker 3: of last year having a if you have like a
[29:02] Speaker 3: super cemented opinion that you're positive what a Marian Hampton
[29:06] Speaker 3: is after a year where he got hurt, and obviously
[29:09] Speaker 3: before that, the tackles got hurt, and so the chargers
[29:12] Speaker 3: were not what they wanted to be. I think, probably
[29:15] Speaker 3: you're being stubborn. But his going like early second round,
[29:20] Speaker 3: almost like at the turn, feels like wish casting based
[29:23] Speaker 3: on combine numbers because I watch him play and yeah,
[29:28] Speaker 3: there's if you're going to tell me at some point
[29:30] Speaker 3: that there's we're going to explain away this Hall of
[29:33] Speaker 3: Fame career, this first year as a broken byproduct of
[29:37] Speaker 3: bad things that happened. I guess that could wind up
[29:39] Speaker 3: being true. But there's some bad tape from his rookiear
[29:43] Speaker 3: where great, you're fast. I never see you get there.
[29:47] Speaker 3: I never see you break around the edge. I never
[29:49] Speaker 3: see you make someone miss. I never see you cut
[29:52] Speaker 3: into the clear and have good vision. So anyway, I'm
[29:56] Speaker 3: going to just use Hampton as again, I don't know.
[29:59] Speaker 3: If he sucks, I'm not taking him where he's going.
[30:01] Speaker 3: I'll make him the poster child for my overrated stat
[30:05] Speaker 3: quality whatever, which is like straight ahead speed for a
[30:07] Speaker 3: running back.
[30:08] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean.
[30:09] Speaker 1: Certainly not the player that you want to attack aggressively
[30:12] Speaker 1: if you're trying to be risk averse.
[30:13] Speaker 2: In the second round.
[30:14] Speaker 1: I mean, I can't get behind, Like there's very proven
[30:18] Speaker 1: talent in that area. Like you know, we both like
[30:21] Speaker 1: Chase Brown a lot as a player in a great
[30:23] Speaker 1: situation as well.
[30:24] Speaker 2: You know, Saquon is in there.
[30:26] Speaker 1: I think now, I like, right now today I have
[30:29] Speaker 1: you know, both a Chan and Henry above Amari and
[30:32] Speaker 1: Hampton because of the you know, just the stability piece
[30:36] Speaker 1: of it. I understand the upside case though for Hampton
[30:38] Speaker 1: at least, like the like that that offense could end
[30:41] Speaker 1: up just being like a juggernaut this year realistically, if
[30:44] Speaker 1: things end up clicking. I didn't think that what I
[30:47] Speaker 1: saw with him last year was phenomenal by any means,
[30:51] Speaker 1: and he but but I do wonder how much he
[30:55] Speaker 1: could potentially crush with just gaping lanes right like that,
[31:00] Speaker 1: like because because if vision is part of the issue. Also,
[31:04] Speaker 1: he does take a little bit longer than what I
[31:06] Speaker 1: remembered watching him in college, and his analytical profile actually
[31:09] Speaker 1: look like he looked pretty good in the in the
[31:11] Speaker 1: Zapp model too. But regardless, like it took him longer
[31:15] Speaker 1: than I would have liked for him to get to
[31:17] Speaker 1: that top speed last year.
[31:18] Speaker 3: I would say, you know, so we'll see we'll see
[31:21] Speaker 3: what happened to me. It seems like you're drafting laundry
[31:24] Speaker 3: at that point. It seems it seems like if you're
[31:26] Speaker 3: going to take the plunge on Hampton, I understand what
[31:28] Speaker 3: could go right, but it's almost like you're drafting the
[31:31] Speaker 3: situation and not the player. And I'm just I think you,
[31:33] Speaker 3: I think.
[31:34] Speaker 2: I think you have to.
[31:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's what it really comes down, like,
[31:36] Speaker 1: would you be let me ask you this, would you
[31:38] Speaker 1: be shocked, like shocked if he led the NFL in
[31:42] Speaker 1: touchdo rushing touchdowns this year?
[31:44] Speaker 3: You know the answer is no, he's shocked. One man's shocked,
[31:48] Speaker 3: doesn't a man you know, jolted, slightly jolted, but no.
[31:51] Speaker 3: But I also wouldn't be shocked if Henry did, and
[31:53] Speaker 3: I wouldn't be shocked if Age handed. I wouldn't be
[31:55] Speaker 3: shocked if Kerkley did, and I wouldn't be shocked if
[31:57] Speaker 3: Chase Brown did, and I wouldn't be shocked. Like That's
[32:00] Speaker 3: that's kind of the point. It's predicting sports. We don't
[32:02] Speaker 3: really know what's going to happen. I've just seen all
[32:04] Speaker 3: those other guys be good in the NFL and Amaron
[32:08] Speaker 3: Hampton is the one guy you said it that stands
[32:11] Speaker 3: out as never having done it. And I'm scared when
[32:14] Speaker 3: we draft situations, when we draft situations Astro and jentigoes five,
[32:17] Speaker 3: you know, like I'm scared of Well, there's so much
[32:20] Speaker 3: theoretical upside and it almost isn't you know. It's like
[32:23] Speaker 3: Tevin Coleman, great forty time big guy. Come on, It's like, yeah,
[32:28] Speaker 3: he kept running into the side of the barn. He
[32:31] Speaker 3: couldn't see anything, so anyway, but anyway, I got us
[32:35] Speaker 3: onto a specific player. I'm interested in your response to
[32:39] Speaker 3: my thought of the forty time being. The thing I'm
[32:42] Speaker 3: most annoyed by.
[32:46] Speaker 2: When I talk to people about my prospect model.
[32:48] Speaker 1: The initial reaction to people who like maybe haven't like
[32:52] Speaker 1: jumped into that arena ever or like seen anything that's
[32:55] Speaker 1: college prospecting base that's numbers driven is that they assume
[32:59] Speaker 1: that it's all combined based. And I can't even explain
[33:02] Speaker 1: to you how little the NFL come. The thing that
[33:03] Speaker 1: matters in the in the prospect model actually is just
[33:07] Speaker 1: the height and weight measurements that I get from the
[33:09] Speaker 1: combine because bigger running backs do tend to outpace eighty.
[33:13] Speaker 1: You know, their their draft capital a little bit better
[33:15] Speaker 1: from a fantasy perspective and such. Right, So, like I
[33:18] Speaker 1: care about size now the speed stuff. It's more so
[33:23] Speaker 1: that you would obviously like a if you had the
[33:27] Speaker 1: exact same analytical profile or like you're watching a player.
[33:30] Speaker 2: I mean, obviously I'm coming at it from the A
[33:32] Speaker 2: ZAP model perspective.
[33:33] Speaker 1: If I had the exact same analytical profile from like
[33:35] Speaker 1: an age adjusted production standpoint, and one player had a
[33:38] Speaker 1: really good speed score weight adjustin forty time, and one
[33:41] Speaker 1: player had a really bad one, yeah, I'll go with
[33:44] Speaker 1: I'll lean the player that had a really good one, right.
[33:46] Speaker 1: And it's more so at the extremes and stuff. But again,
[33:49] Speaker 1: it's one of those things where like you have to
[33:52] Speaker 1: have a backbone of good NFL production. And this is
[33:56] Speaker 1: also one of those things where like I built the
[33:59] Speaker 1: model and I've really enhanced it, and it's gotten better
[34:02] Speaker 1: every year.
[34:03] Speaker 2: And I really turned the.
[34:04] Speaker 1: Corner in like the twenty twenty twenty twenty one time
[34:07] Speaker 1: frame or so with like modeling, and I mean it
[34:09] Speaker 1: was around the time that I started this company, so
[34:10] Speaker 1: I want to do the prospect guide, So I really
[34:12] Speaker 1: leaned into all of it, and I then look back,
[34:15] Speaker 1: because I'm obviously testing off of data. Yeah, and I
[34:17] Speaker 1: look back at previous years and guys that were drafted
[34:21] Speaker 1: in twenty sixteen or whatever, and I'm like, I see
[34:25] Speaker 1: why people fell in love with this player, and I
[34:26] Speaker 1: see why he busted. And a perfect example of this
[34:29] Speaker 1: with the speed score stuff and the forty time stuff
[34:32] Speaker 1: is like a Christian Michael right where he had unbelievable
[34:36] Speaker 1: athletic measurables and he gets pretty good draft capital. His
[34:39] Speaker 1: production profile was absolutely horrendous, like it was terrible, And
[34:43] Speaker 1: so when you get that pairing, that's when you know
[34:46] Speaker 1: the market is likely to inflate that player. And that's
[34:49] Speaker 1: when you say, okay. But the thing that matters most
[34:53] Speaker 1: the production stuff, the predictive production stuff that I know
[34:56] Speaker 1: has been predictive. Like if that's not there, then I
[35:01] Speaker 1: don't really care about what this forty time says. Like
[35:03] Speaker 1: maybe you know, every once in a while you're gonna
[35:05] Speaker 1: get like the random one off hit of like bad
[35:08] Speaker 1: production profile or like mediocre production profile and you know,
[35:11] Speaker 1: really high end speed because every once in a while,
[35:14] Speaker 1: athleticism does translate better than what we imagine and what
[35:18] Speaker 1: we think but I do think a general guideline of
[35:21] Speaker 1: like people overrate forty, I mean, especially wide receiver. There's actually,
[35:25] Speaker 1: I don't know if you know this, but there's an
[35:26] Speaker 1: inverse correlation no for wide receiver forty.
[35:30] Speaker 2: Time and how well they performed the NFL on draft capital.
[35:32] Speaker 1: So like, if a wide receiver gets drafted in the
[35:35] Speaker 1: top one hundred, you know, day one or day two
[35:37] Speaker 1: in the NFL draft, who ran a fast forty, you
[35:39] Speaker 1: generally want to fade that player as opposed to leaning
[35:42] Speaker 1: into it because you're almost double counting because the NFL
[35:45] Speaker 1: already you know, really enhanced that player's profile by drafting
[35:49] Speaker 1: them so early, by you know, the Darius Hayward Bay thing.
[35:52] Speaker 1: You know, the you see it all the time unfortunately,
[35:55] Speaker 1: where these guys just get boosted and boosted and boosted
[35:58] Speaker 1: by these NFL teams.
[35:59] Speaker 2: But they're prettduction profiles.
[36:00] Speaker 1: But matter I care so much more now every once
[36:03] Speaker 1: in a while you get screwed, like I like David.
[36:04] Speaker 2: Bell when he came out you know nothing, but he
[36:09] Speaker 2: had a great production profile.
[36:10] Speaker 1: But yeah, I think it's a good rule of thumb honestly,
[36:12] Speaker 1: where I would generally agree with you.
[36:14] Speaker 3: Can I ask you just about the college production profile.
[36:17] Speaker 3: I did a little research thing in the Dominac for
[36:19] Speaker 3: Jendarium Price, which was the fewest college touches of any
[36:25] Speaker 3: running back selected in the first round of the NFL
[36:28] Speaker 3: Draft since two thousand and The fewest college of touches
[36:33] Speaker 3: was Jerien Price. I mean, for obvious reasons, he was
[36:36] Speaker 3: playing behind very very good player and the guy with
[36:39] Speaker 3: the second fewist who went in the first round was
[36:41] Speaker 3: Josh Jacobs, who clearly has had a really really good career.
[36:44] Speaker 3: But otherwise the list of names is right mostly terrifying.
[36:50] Speaker 3: Mostly you know, like Michael Bennett, Felix Jones, Clyde Edwards,
[36:56] Speaker 3: Hilaire Rashard Mendenhall. I guess we're Shard Mendenhall an ARV
[37:00] Speaker 3: eight season. But if a guy has has little workloads
[37:04] Speaker 3: like that, does in your model? Does that get scary
[37:06] Speaker 3: for you?
[37:07] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[37:07] Speaker 1: But I don't approach it the way that like people
[37:10] Speaker 1: think that I or not I, but like people would
[37:13] Speaker 1: assume that you would then say, oh, I'm just not
[37:16] Speaker 1: drafting this player. I just view it as volatility, ok right,
[37:19] Speaker 1: I just view it as like we don't know. But
[37:21] Speaker 1: the thing with with Jenarium Price that's a little bit different,
[37:23] Speaker 1: like if he didn't have so I have a teammate
[37:25] Speaker 1: score in there that he gets boosted because and it
[37:28] Speaker 1: depends on where Jeremiah Love gets drafted, So he gets
[37:30] Speaker 1: drafted third overall, and then all of a sudden, that
[37:32] Speaker 1: teammates score really really boosts Jenarium Price, and he ended
[37:35] Speaker 1: up being like a pretty like more of a fairly
[37:38] Speaker 1: neutral player within the model, despite the fact that he
[37:41] Speaker 1: had probably the worst production profile of anyone in that
[37:44] Speaker 1: model that got drafted that high, right, And so I
[37:47] Speaker 1: view it as like, I'm not fading. I'm not going
[37:49] Speaker 1: to probably be as aggressive as some people because I
[37:51] Speaker 1: don't necessarily want to take on that kind of volatility,
[37:55] Speaker 1: you know, in the first six rounds of my rookie
[37:57] Speaker 1: or first six picks of my rookie draft. But I
[37:59] Speaker 1: don't view it as like Generium Price is definitely gonna
[38:02] Speaker 1: bust because obviously they're in senuating circumstances as to why.
[38:06] Speaker 1: You know, the production wasn't there, But if there was,
[38:08] Speaker 1: if he didn't have Jeremiah Love and he had that
[38:10] Speaker 1: production profile, yeah, I'd be sitting here being like, this
[38:13] Speaker 1: is a scary profile, guys. I don't think that we
[38:15] Speaker 1: should be leaning into it, and you know, more often
[38:17] Speaker 1: than not that works. But then sometimes, I mean, this
[38:19] Speaker 1: wide receiver class in particular this year was genuinely like
[38:23] Speaker 1: not very good analytically, just very as the kids say,
[38:26] Speaker 1: mid right, and so design Shribbling did not have a
[38:30] Speaker 1: good production profile, Caleb Douglas did not have a good
[38:33] Speaker 1: age adjusted production profile. But it's also a chooser own
[38:36] Speaker 1: adventure kind of thing because all of these guys didn't.
[38:38] Speaker 1: To me, it was like this big four wide receivers
[38:40] Speaker 1: with Tyson, Tait, Lemon, and Concepcione. It's always nice when
[38:45] Speaker 1: when draft capital kind of aligns with that because it
[38:47] Speaker 1: means that, like the NFL teams are thinking similarly and such.
[38:50] Speaker 1: And then it was just kind of like, all right,
[38:52] Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be shocked if because someone's gonna emerge.
[38:54] Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be shocked if it's someone with a
[38:56] Speaker 1: crappier profile, just because there's.
[38:57] Speaker 2: So many of them this year.
[38:58] Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean, it's it's more so a volatility
[39:02] Speaker 1: thing for me than anything else.
[39:03] Speaker 2: That's that's kind of how I view view price.
[39:06] Speaker 1: We kind of talked about this a little bit, but
[39:09] Speaker 1: you know, obviously like you're you've drafted now and we're
[39:11] Speaker 1: we're in the midst of you know.
[39:13] Speaker 2: Draft season.
[39:15] Speaker 1: As you look at the way that your drafts have
[39:16] Speaker 1: kind of gone as well as just ADP, I know
[39:18] Speaker 1: that you you're one.
[39:19] Speaker 2: I mean, God, bless you. I can't do this, but
[39:22] Speaker 2: you wait, you wait until Monday of this week.
[39:27] Speaker 3: I don't.
[39:27] Speaker 1: I don't look at that honestly, incredibly impressive because I
[39:31] Speaker 1: have been looking at ADP since I think February.
[39:33] Speaker 2: So I appreciate the people who can who can hold
[39:36] Speaker 2: back like that.
[39:37] Speaker 1: But what's been sort of the most common team construction
[39:40] Speaker 1: that you find yourself? You know, leaning towards sounds like
[39:43] Speaker 1: you're going RB heavy just because of what the board
[39:45] Speaker 1: is giving you and such. But like, have you been
[39:47] Speaker 1: in different parts of the board where you're like, oh,
[39:49] Speaker 1: late round one, I like double tapping running back. Maybe
[39:52] Speaker 1: in the first part of round one, I'm getting running back,
[39:54] Speaker 1: but then maybe like what does that look like for you?
[39:56] Speaker 3: You know, the number of drafts I've done is I
[40:00] Speaker 3: would say more often than not running back in the
[40:03] Speaker 3: first round. But definitely gotten Chase a couple of times,
[40:06] Speaker 3: gotten JSN a couple of times in the first round
[40:08] Speaker 3: and built a team that I liked. Really depends on
[40:11] Speaker 3: what else went in front of me around that two
[40:14] Speaker 3: three turn. I have tended to find just the for
[40:18] Speaker 3: whatever reason, the drafts i'm in there sets in mid
[40:21] Speaker 3: round two, the running back panic sets in, and I
[40:25] Speaker 3: don't know if you be able to correct me if
[40:27] Speaker 3: you feel this way too, Like I get to that turn,
[40:30] Speaker 3: if you're picking, you know, the Gibbs Bijon area. You're
[40:34] Speaker 3: lucky enough, right, If you're lucky enough, it's you're not
[40:38] Speaker 3: going to find a lot of great running backs at
[40:40] Speaker 3: that two three turn.
[40:41] Speaker 2: And so sometimes there are, and it really just depends.
[40:44] Speaker 3: Again, I'm drafting players not positioned, So this is all
[40:47] Speaker 3: theoretical until we get in a draft and you see
[40:50] Speaker 3: what actual players are there. But a lot of times
[40:53] Speaker 3: it winds up being two receivers at that point.
[40:57] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[40:57] Speaker 3: Again, you know, like a lot of Smith, a lot
[41:01] Speaker 3: of h Chris o Lave, a lot of Jay Flowers.
[41:05] Speaker 3: I love them in those in that little area and
[41:07] Speaker 3: then maybe maybe two of them. But also sometimes there's
[41:11] Speaker 3: another running back there and I go, sure, I can
[41:13] Speaker 3: make that work. But you said it before. I like
[41:15] Speaker 3: when it's Javante, I have done like Jon Davante Smith,
[41:21] Speaker 3: Javante Williams. And then I just find all I'm doing
[41:25] Speaker 3: is feeling like I'm playing ketchup at receiver and It's okay.
[41:28] Speaker 3: I'm fire and fire and fire, and Terry McLaurin come
[41:30] Speaker 3: on down, you know, Yeah, I'll get some Roma Dunze,
[41:35] Speaker 3: I'll get some Christian Watson as we go further and
[41:37] Speaker 3: further and further down. And I feel okay about that
[41:40] Speaker 3: because again, I just think there are fifty guys who
[41:43] Speaker 3: can finish in the top ten. It's such a and
[41:45] Speaker 3: the top ten is almost meaningless because there'll be an
[41:48] Speaker 3: average of like two Fantasy points per game between like
[41:51] Speaker 3: the wide receiver twelve and the wide receiver fifty and also.
[41:55] Speaker 1: Like the back half back half of You know, if
[41:57] Speaker 1: you're in that one of those slots, you know, from
[41:59] Speaker 1: like one O nine onwards, it's very very easy to
[42:02] Speaker 1: just get your two running backs and feel great about them.
[42:04] Speaker 1: And then and then when you're in round three and four,
[42:07] Speaker 1: there is a tier. I wonder if you feel this way,
[42:10] Speaker 1: there's just this tier of incredible upside wide receivers that
[42:13] Speaker 1: you can go for. You know that that you feel
[42:15] Speaker 1: just like very comfortable with and data shows that the
[42:19] Speaker 1: front half of drafts or you know, especially the one
[42:21] Speaker 1: oh one one oh two, generally you're gonna have better
[42:23] Speaker 1: results and such. But I don't really mind the the
[42:25] Speaker 1: tail end of round one this year because I do think,
[42:28] Speaker 1: you know, to your point, like if you're in the
[42:30] Speaker 1: front half, as you get to the end of round two,
[42:33] Speaker 1: you're definitely forcing it at running back, like you're feeling
[42:36] Speaker 1: that too as you're as you're making that selection. But
[42:38] Speaker 1: at least in the back half you're like, oh, I
[42:40] Speaker 1: can get you know, James Cook and and maybe a
[42:44] Speaker 1: Kenneth Walker comes around the second or something like, you know,
[42:46] Speaker 1: like someone that you can at least envision being a
[42:49] Speaker 1: pretty strong fantasy asset this year, right, And then in
[42:53] Speaker 1: round three you're sitting there like, maybe we do get
[42:55] Speaker 1: a falling Zay Flowers or a falling DeVante Smith. But
[42:58] Speaker 1: even if we don't, oh, here's Alan Waddle on Denver
[43:01] Speaker 1: or something, you know, like there's just a lot of
[43:03] Speaker 1: upside there. So it's interesting this year and the way
[43:06] Speaker 1: that you know, the drafts are unfolding and such. But
[43:09] Speaker 1: I think it's fairer because Bijon and Jamier Gibbs are
[43:13] Speaker 1: just such smashes, you know, in the in the in
[43:16] Speaker 1: the top two picks in general, that there should be
[43:18] Speaker 1: a somewhat of a disadvantage, you know, and in the
[43:21] Speaker 1: later rounds for that spot.
[43:24] Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we think we know everything and then
[43:26] Speaker 3: we get to Week one. In our mind, palace is
[43:28] Speaker 3: just shatter and it turns to Brian Robinson.
[43:31] Speaker 1: Brian Robinson's running into the end zone and Bjon's on
[43:34] Speaker 1: the sideline.
[43:34] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[43:35] Speaker 3: I mean, first of all, you count on zero hands
[43:39] Speaker 3: how many times Bejon Robinson has more than seventy percent
[43:41] Speaker 3: of his team's carries in a season. That doesn't happened yet.
[43:44] Speaker 3: I don't think it's gonna happen this year. But that
[43:45] Speaker 3: doesn't matter because he's great. Like what we want is
[43:47] Speaker 3: great players. They all have some degree of timeshare. But
[43:50] Speaker 3: another conversation, you know, the my point is that Sequon
[43:54] Speaker 3: wasn't the one O one when he ran for two
[43:56] Speaker 3: thousand yards. You know, like, there's just things that happen.
[43:59] Speaker 3: We just think we know and then it turns out
[44:01] Speaker 3: we don't really really know, which is why I think
[44:05] Speaker 3: if you're airing on the side of drafting players that
[44:09] Speaker 3: if everything goes right, they're good enough that they can
[44:12] Speaker 3: go really go boom. And there are that many running
[44:17] Speaker 3: backs where I can say that's the case. But there's
[44:19] Speaker 3: a lot of receivers. Yeah, you know, if you grant
[44:24] Speaker 3: the Jags a top three offense, I can name three
[44:28] Speaker 3: receivers who might be startable for fantasy. You know, if
[44:31] Speaker 3: you if you grant the Jags a top three offense,
[44:36] Speaker 3: maybe bischultuton is, but I don't think Baschueltuten is great.
[44:38] Speaker 3: So like maybe maybe he'd be he'd be startable, but
[44:41] Speaker 3: I'm not sure he'd be like a league a smash
[44:43] Speaker 3: league winner. The wide receiver talent in the league right
[44:46] Speaker 3: now is un freaking believable.
[44:49] Speaker 2: I mean that's the other thing. Yeah, I mean like that.
[44:51] Speaker 1: I don't mean to interrupt, but like that was one
[44:53] Speaker 1: of the things that we could have even talked about
[44:55] Speaker 1: this at the top of like why the spread is
[44:57] Speaker 1: the way that it is, because I it's gotten really
[45:00] Speaker 1: good wide receiver classes the last ten years.
[45:02] Speaker 2: You know, we've just gotten really good wide odds.
[45:04] Speaker 3: Who it's the position that the crazy athletes play. I
[45:08] Speaker 3: don't know if I said this to you when you're
[45:09] Speaker 3: on my show last week or two weeks ago. But
[45:11] Speaker 3: it's like if you could send any of these receiving
[45:15] Speaker 3: corps back to like nineteen seventy NFL, it would be
[45:18] Speaker 3: like going back to the pilgrim time and giving them
[45:21] Speaker 3: one sour skittle, you know, and like their heads would explode.
[45:25] Speaker 3: Like these guys are freaks, and like the fourth receiver
[45:30] Speaker 3: on every team is utter unbelievable, ridiculous size, speed freak.
[45:35] Speaker 3: The amount of talent at receiver is both daunting for
[45:39] Speaker 3: fantasy but also just like overwhelmingly admirable. It's crazy.
[45:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, No, it's a really really good point to make,
[45:49] Speaker 1: all right. I have to ask you this because I
[45:50] Speaker 1: know the answer to it, and I just want to
[45:52] Speaker 1: hear you, you know, get angry and yell about it.
[45:54] Speaker 2: All right.
[45:55] Speaker 1: Tell me how much you hate preseason football and why
[45:59] Speaker 1: you hate I call it exhibition football.
[46:02] Speaker 3: Do you are you old enough to remember when when
[46:04] Speaker 3: they league called it exhibition season?
[46:06] Speaker 2: Call it that. Do you remember that when you were
[46:08] Speaker 2: a kid. Yeah? It did good?
[46:11] Speaker 3: Change it was he the okay, yeah he did. I
[46:14] Speaker 3: just don't watch it. I think it's useless. I would
[46:16] Speaker 3: pay way more attention to the beat reports of the
[46:19] Speaker 3: joint practices. I think that's way more important for uh,
[46:24] Speaker 3: you know, as long as whoever's healthy, you know which
[46:27] Speaker 3: position groups, who's out with whom, who gets matched up
[46:30] Speaker 3: on the top, guys, who stands out, all that stuff
[46:33] Speaker 3: they're they're it's certainly controlled play by play. A lot
[46:36] Speaker 3: of it's not even tackling to the ground, but it's
[46:38] Speaker 3: just it's the actual plays that they're going to run,
[46:41] Speaker 3: and it is the actual personnel who was going to
[46:44] Speaker 3: run them. And the problem is that all the exhibition games.
[46:49] Speaker 3: Not only is that not the case for the exhibition games,
[46:51] Speaker 3: but the extent to which it's not the case varies
[46:54] Speaker 3: wildly from team to teams. You just don't know what
[46:56] Speaker 3: you're looking at, and it's so easy to get at bamboozled.
[47:01] Speaker 3: Oh but they were playing the first defense. Yeah, they
[47:04] Speaker 3: had like vanilla quarters coverage that they wouldn't budget out of.
[47:08] Speaker 3: No matter what, it doesn't ever translate, So I just
[47:12] Speaker 3: don't watch it.
[47:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny.
[47:15] Speaker 1: I probably put stock into it, like before I truly realize,
[47:20] Speaker 1: you know, I think that everyone just gets better at
[47:22] Speaker 1: whatever they're doing as they're doing it, And I find
[47:24] Speaker 1: myself like I don't care at all about preseason football
[47:27] Speaker 1: anymore either. And there's a couple of reasons that a
[47:29] Speaker 1: couple of things that happened in my life to like
[47:31] Speaker 1: really get me there. You know, like maybe like ten
[47:34] Speaker 1: fifteen years ago, I would put a decent amount of
[47:36] Speaker 1: stock into it, and then as the years went on,
[47:40] Speaker 1: I gradually cared less and less. And then the thing
[47:42] Speaker 1: that made me literally never care again was the year
[47:46] Speaker 1: year two Kenny Pickett and.
[47:48] Speaker 2: The Steelers offense.
[47:50] Speaker 1: The Steelers offense, I think they went the whole the
[47:52] Speaker 1: first team offense, I think went the whole preseason without
[47:55] Speaker 1: punting or something like. It was something like they were
[47:57] Speaker 1: just incredible, right like they were they were crushing everybody.
[47:59] Speaker 1: And then we know how the story unfolded, right, And
[48:02] Speaker 1: it's what's really funny. I don't know if you've seen
[48:04] Speaker 1: this stack get thrown around, but it was something along
[48:06] Speaker 1: the lines of like so Design Stribbling had like seven
[48:08] Speaker 1: catches or something the other day in the in their
[48:10] Speaker 1: first preseason game, and I saw like the AP send
[48:13] Speaker 1: a tweet out that was like it was it was
[48:15] Speaker 1: tied for the most catches in a preseason game or
[48:17] Speaker 1: something like in the first half or something along those lines.
[48:20] Speaker 1: And then you know, you're getting excited and you're like, oh, man,
[48:23] Speaker 1: Design Stribbling is him, and look he might be. We
[48:25] Speaker 1: have I'm just saying that the preseason has nothing to
[48:27] Speaker 1: do with whether he is or not. And in parentheses
[48:30] Speaker 1: it showed the two players he tied, and it was
[48:33] Speaker 1: Josh Palmer and At Perry that he had tied with them.
[48:39] Speaker 2: So everyone's like quote tweeting this and like retweeting it
[48:42] Speaker 2: and they're like, design Stribling is the man.
[48:44] Speaker 1: But in the tweet, it's like At Perry and Josh Palmer,
[48:47] Speaker 1: these guys that we just want nothing to do with
[48:49] Speaker 1: from a fantasy football perspective. So it's like, you know,
[48:52] Speaker 1: there's there's a lot of that I agree with. You
[48:54] Speaker 1: can play like there are some really really good, reliable
[48:57] Speaker 1: beat writers out there. If you've been doing this long enough,
[48:59] Speaker 1: you know that you can look to that you know
[49:01] Speaker 1: can give you the right kind of insights with their
[49:03] Speaker 1: teams and such, and like try to find them, and
[49:06] Speaker 1: you know you can ask us, I'm sure, but you know,
[49:09] Speaker 1: obviously just you know, don't take everyone's word for it,
[49:12] Speaker 1: but there are people that have been doing this for many,
[49:14] Speaker 1: many years that can be really helpful and just like
[49:16] Speaker 1: understanding usage and such, because that's what we were worried about,
[49:19] Speaker 1: right in fantasy. We want the volume side, how they
[49:21] Speaker 1: perform in preseason. Just I've officially retired from that.
[49:26] Speaker 2: So I'm with you. I just need to hear you
[49:27] Speaker 2: get angry. Not angry.
[49:30] Speaker 3: But it's a scam. It's just one more it's you know,
[49:34] Speaker 3: it's one more case where the it's not enough. It's
[49:38] Speaker 3: not enough money. You don't understand, you just not enough money.
[49:40] Speaker 3: My jet doesn't have jewel encrusted cigarette plates or whatever,
[49:45] Speaker 3: like you know, I need to I need to builk
[49:47] Speaker 3: the season ticket holders to and make them pay for
[49:50] Speaker 3: exhibition games. It's just it's just a cash grab, all right.
[49:54] Speaker 1: I want to go really quick and talk about a
[49:57] Speaker 1: handful of teammate battles that are going on. I won't
[50:00] Speaker 1: even talk about ADP. I just want to talk about
[50:01] Speaker 1: them as players and like where you lean and how
[50:03] Speaker 1: you feel about them more than anything else. So let's
[50:05] Speaker 1: start with with Luther Burden versus Roma Dunzay. Assuming Burden's
[50:08] Speaker 1: fine Week one with the groin injury that he's dealing with.
[50:11] Speaker 3: Okay, I mean I'm not assuming that because there is
[50:14] Speaker 3: some x percent chance that yeah, okay, yeah, if there's
[50:17] Speaker 3: a reinjury, I.
[50:18] Speaker 1: Want to Yeah, I'm just curious where you're at with
[50:20] Speaker 1: them as just like players and the outlook if they
[50:23] Speaker 1: were healthy.
[50:24] Speaker 3: Right, Okay, they were very close in my pre burden
[50:28] Speaker 3: injury ranks, but I still did have a Dunza a
[50:30] Speaker 3: little bit higher, and I did not expect that going
[50:33] Speaker 3: into the off season. I was mad at a Dunzay.
[50:35] Speaker 3: Obviously he like you know, he was crummy at the
[50:38] Speaker 3: end of last year and he was hurt and I
[50:40] Speaker 3: don't know if you heard, but his foot felt funny.
[50:43] Speaker 3: But now apparently his foot feels fine, because that was
[50:45] Speaker 3: always nonsense. I watched that tape before he got hurt.
[50:48] Speaker 3: Me and Andy did on the yacht club show that
[50:51] Speaker 3: we do, and uh, we both came away going, this
[50:55] Speaker 3: dude's good, really, really sudden for as big as he is.
[50:59] Speaker 2: So right now I have a fairly strong.
[51:02] Speaker 3: Lead to lean a Dunza because of the burden concern,
[51:06] Speaker 3: like what if he hurts it again in week two,
[51:08] Speaker 3: But even beforehand it was a slight I like burden too,
[51:11] Speaker 3: but it was a slight Adunzey advantage.
[51:12] Speaker 2: I lean on the Burden side.
[51:13] Speaker 1: I'm a Burden bro, so I'm coming out from that
[51:16] Speaker 1: perspect I love him as a prospect, and then like
[51:18] Speaker 1: all that happened was that he kind of like verified
[51:21] Speaker 1: some a lot of my priors, you know, as I
[51:22] Speaker 1: watched him last year.
[51:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, second half breakout, I know, I know.
[51:28] Speaker 1: But my my thing with a Dunsay versus Burden, And
[51:31] Speaker 1: I'm curious if you if you would, maybe you might
[51:33] Speaker 1: completely disagree with this, but I think a Dunza is
[51:36] Speaker 1: definitely like a lot of people who lean film and
[51:39] Speaker 1: like like analyze that way, like Harmon, for instance, loves Romadunza.
[51:43] Speaker 1: And this is nothing against you guys at all. I
[51:44] Speaker 1: think there's a lot of validity to it. I'm curious though,
[51:48] Speaker 1: if a duncea might be more aesthetically pleasing as like
[51:51] Speaker 1: a traditional wide receiver and Burden who has I mean,
[51:56] Speaker 1: he's incredible after the catch, Luther Burden like in so
[51:59] Speaker 1: much speed right, And there's a piece of this where
[52:03] Speaker 1: Burden just fits what a Ben Johnson offense might be.
[52:07] Speaker 2: Able to do it, Like like if you want to.
[52:09] Speaker 1: Get a an offensive mind that can scheme open his
[52:12] Speaker 1: wide receivers and where you don't have to worry about
[52:15] Speaker 1: some of that nuance as much like Ben Johnson would
[52:17] Speaker 1: probably be on your short list of guys that you
[52:20] Speaker 1: would lean on, right for that, and Burden then obviously
[52:23] Speaker 1: is that like short area quickness can do so much
[52:25] Speaker 1: after the catch, like with the ball in his hands,
[52:27] Speaker 1: he's the best player on that team, right, Yeah, I
[52:29] Speaker 1: am trying to look at scheme and fit and such,
[52:32] Speaker 1: and I'm not like, I'm not sitting here calling him
[52:34] Speaker 1: I'm in Ross Saint Brown or anything like that, right,
[52:36] Speaker 1: because Saint Brown I think is a better route runner
[52:38] Speaker 1: than than Luthor Bird is today and.
[52:40] Speaker 2: What we know.
[52:41] Speaker 1: But there's just something about the scheme and what and
[52:44] Speaker 1: how that matches with Luthor Burden that's really appealing to me.
[52:46] Speaker 2: I get it, I don't you know.
[52:48] Speaker 3: You're asking me if I like Cocher Pepsi And because
[52:51] Speaker 3: I said coke doesn't mean I hate pepsi. You know, Like, yes,
[52:54] Speaker 3: I understand the.
[52:54] Speaker 2: Argument for Burden. Yeah.
[52:57] Speaker 3: There's been a lot of people since I'm on RA
[53:00] Speaker 3: Saint Brown broke out who have been the next a Monro.
[53:03] Speaker 3: It's fair and none of them are you know, well,
[53:06] Speaker 3: I know, but he could be a Monra. I know
[53:08] Speaker 3: those limitations, but he could be on Monra. I know,
[53:10] Speaker 3: no one turns out to be. But you're one hundred
[53:13] Speaker 3: percent right, Like he's really fun with the ball in
[53:14] Speaker 3: his hands, now, is it Jaden Reid?
[53:18] Speaker 2: You know?
[53:18] Speaker 3: And then you go Okay, then if he can't do
[53:20] Speaker 3: anything other than that gizmo stuff, then it's not that
[53:22] Speaker 3: useful to me. We'll find out. But no, this is
[53:25] Speaker 3: not me disliking Luthor Burton.
[53:27] Speaker 1: You're a New England guy, so I am very curious
[53:29] Speaker 1: about how you feel about that backfield with Trayvon Henderson,
[53:31] Speaker 1: Ormandra Stevenson.
[53:33] Speaker 3: I mean, I'm gonna tell you right now. I'm gonna
[53:35] Speaker 3: tell everybody right now, Uh, Travion Henderson's being overrated. It's
[53:39] Speaker 3: year two. They still can't trust him in past protection.
[53:42] Speaker 3: You know, I was the guy when everybody was dropping
[53:44] Speaker 3: Travion last year who got on the show and said,
[53:48] Speaker 3: little Birdie is telling me, do not drop Trevion Henderson,
[53:50] Speaker 3: that we have plans for him. And then like a
[53:52] Speaker 3: couple weeks later, they had plans for him and it
[53:56] Speaker 3: was obviously a work in progress. And all I can
[53:58] Speaker 3: tell you is that it continues to be a work
[54:00] Speaker 3: in progress, and this is going to be if you're
[54:02] Speaker 3: drafting Trevion in the fourth round, you're going to be
[54:05] Speaker 3: annoyed because there're gonna be some weeks where he touches
[54:07] Speaker 3: it thirteen times and has forty four yards and doesn't
[54:11] Speaker 3: break the big one and Ramondre scores two touchdowns and
[54:13] Speaker 3: you're gonna be like, why did I do this to myself?
[54:16] Speaker 2: I have Ramondre straight up. I mean, they're in the
[54:18] Speaker 2: same tier for me.
[54:18] Speaker 1: But I've cause I look, I understand the explosive nature
[54:21] Speaker 1: to Treyboun's game, Like there's a lot of upside packaged
[54:24] Speaker 1: in that if things start to click. But I mean
[54:26] Speaker 1: I think that New England just looks at what's reliable,
[54:30] Speaker 1: and I think, like Ramondre Stephenson first half of the season, fine,
[54:33] Speaker 1: what he was awesome the second half of last year
[54:36] Speaker 1: like he was legitimately really good and I took an L.
[54:39] Speaker 2: Because I was I was a rat. We won't get into.
[54:43] Speaker 3: It happens to everybody.
[54:47] Speaker 2: Happens. I mean, look sometime to take l's with this job.
[54:50] Speaker 3: It's not over. It's not over with Henderson. I think
[54:54] Speaker 3: here's where they are. I mean, I'm not telling you,
[54:56] Speaker 3: I know everything, but like I know little something, and
[54:58] Speaker 3: I think where they are is that they view it
[55:00] Speaker 3: as a continuum and they're trying to be patient with
[55:03] Speaker 3: him and there they want him to return kicks and
[55:07] Speaker 3: they you know, like they view it as a really
[55:10] Speaker 3: awesome quiver arrow in their quiver, I should say, you know,
[55:14] Speaker 3: they view it as an excellent There're gonna be times
[55:17] Speaker 3: where they just try to isolate him and get him
[55:20] Speaker 3: with a nice kickout block and a very obvious clear
[55:22] Speaker 3: lane and there's a ninety yard run waiting to happen
[55:24] Speaker 3: right there. But I just think it's not that he'll
[55:29] Speaker 3: never be able to do the rest of it, but
[55:30] Speaker 3: I don't think they think he can do it now. Yeah.
[55:33] Speaker 1: I'm also you know, they they ran the fewest amount
[55:35] Speaker 1: of plays while trailing last year in terms of percent
[55:38] Speaker 1: of plays run. And Tomandra is on the field for Yeah,
[55:42] Speaker 1: Ramandra is on the field for more than double the
[55:43] Speaker 1: snaps his travion in those situations because of the pass
[55:46] Speaker 1: pro stuff and so obviously tougher schedule this year more
[55:49] Speaker 1: than likely, and just general regression, just the way that
[55:51] Speaker 1: the NFL ebbs and flows. Yeah, you're going to see
[55:54] Speaker 1: more negative game scripts, and that's where I think Remandre
[55:56] Speaker 1: is just going to be on the field More's correct,
[55:58] Speaker 1: Like you could argue that last year was really really
[56:00] Speaker 1: a decent situation in general for a player like Trayveon
[56:03] Speaker 1: who was struggling in past pro and now you know,
[56:05] Speaker 1: they might just go with more of the reliable guy
[56:07] Speaker 1: as long as Ramondra can hold out of the ball,
[56:09] Speaker 1: of course, because there's right, there's that side which he
[56:12] Speaker 1: seemed to figure out that. I mean, there's obviously a
[56:14] Speaker 1: lot of variance to fumbling and such, but it's it
[56:17] Speaker 1: was a problem for him for a while.
[56:19] Speaker 3: I mean two years ago, two years ago, I thought
[56:20] Speaker 3: he was gonna get cut. I mean yeah, I know, yeah, yeah.
[56:24] Speaker 2: Brian Thomas versus Parker Washington would love to hear your
[56:26] Speaker 2: take on this.
[56:27] Speaker 3: One man, Parker Washington. Could there be more heat behind
[56:30] Speaker 3: any player in Fantasy right now? Holy No.
[56:32] Speaker 1: But I freaking love it though, because I I mean,
[56:35] Speaker 1: I don't love it because I like, I like Parker Washington.
[56:37] Speaker 3: I'd like to get him. I'm just like he might
[56:41] Speaker 3: like the cheaper price. Yeah, I like, I like the
[56:42] Speaker 3: sixth round priace. So I don't think that's ever happening again.
[56:45] Speaker 3: My take, I'm interested in your take, But my take
[56:48] Speaker 3: is that the new Jags coaching staff came in Liam
[56:51] Speaker 3: Cohen and his cohorts and said, Brian Thomas, with your
[56:55] Speaker 3: nose so bright, you know you're you're the man. And
[57:00] Speaker 3: they tried to have him do everything, and within about
[57:03] Speaker 3: six weeks they were like, oh, he can't do everything.
[57:06] Speaker 3: I mean, he looked terrified to go over the middle.
[57:10] Speaker 3: He looked uncoordinated having to run dig routes. He looked
[57:15] Speaker 3: like the timing was just off, and so I felt
[57:19] Speaker 3: like they started taking that stuff away from him and
[57:22] Speaker 3: put him back in more hat tip Matt Harmon Sacrificial
[57:26] Speaker 3: ex Land even before he got hurt, and then of
[57:28] Speaker 3: course the Raider game he gets hurt, and after that
[57:31] Speaker 3: it probably isn't fair to judge because who knows the
[57:34] Speaker 3: high ankle sprants legit hurt. You know, he came back
[57:37] Speaker 3: maybe a little too early, and maybe that's why he
[57:39] Speaker 3: wasn't great. But the lesson I took away was Parker
[57:43] Speaker 3: Washington wasn't even the fourth receiver at the beginning of
[57:45] Speaker 3: last year, and they found him midyear and suddenly he's
[57:49] Speaker 3: doing all the stuff that they had Thomas at least
[57:52] Speaker 3: the stuff interior type stuff that they had slated for Thomas,
[57:56] Speaker 3: and he just killed it and was awesome at it.
[58:00] Speaker 3: Why in the world would you go back? So I
[58:02] Speaker 3: prefer pretty strongly prefer Washington to Ryan Thomas.
[58:05] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm in the same boat. The thing with Parker
[58:08] Speaker 1: Washington too, is that, like he's not the traditional slot guy.
[58:11] Speaker 1: I would argue like he's I mean, he's built like
[58:14] Speaker 1: a running back kind of right where he can he
[58:17] Speaker 1: can do a lot with his size, but he gets
[58:19] Speaker 1: vertical a lot more than people realize too.
[58:21] Speaker 2: That I think is a huge part of his game.
[58:23] Speaker 2: There's some it's just.
[58:24] Speaker 3: Oh sorry, there's some two year ago JSN in him.
[58:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, Like like like you want to talk about a
[58:30] Speaker 1: like an omenraw archetype type player, like he would be
[58:34] Speaker 1: one that kind of fits in that a little bit more.
[58:36] Speaker 1: And it's you know, it is a scheme in an
[58:38] Speaker 1: offense that I don't put a ton of stock in
[58:40] Speaker 1: this kind of thing, but like has traditionally fed slot guys,
[58:43] Speaker 1: and you know a personnel is gonna going to dictate
[58:46] Speaker 1: this to a degree. But like Liam, like Chris Godwin
[58:48] Speaker 1: was on his way to having the best season of
[58:50] Speaker 1: his career with with Liam Cohen. I mean, you can
[58:53] Speaker 1: even date back to Coen at Kentucky. He was using
[58:55] Speaker 1: Wandel Robinson, you know, in that in that kind of role,
[58:58] Speaker 1: and so like, I don't think it's this all happened
[59:01] Speaker 1: by accident, like I do think that Parker. I actually
[59:04] Speaker 1: thought Parker Washington wasn't a bad prospect too, coming out
[59:06] Speaker 1: as one of those things where the model was saying
[59:08] Speaker 1: because I can go back and I can look at
[59:09] Speaker 1: old prospect guys and see what I was thinking about
[59:11] Speaker 1: these players, and I was like fighting against the model
[59:14] Speaker 1: in my right up. I'm like, Mono really likes him,
[59:17] Speaker 1: but I'm like, you don't need to like go great,
[59:18] Speaker 1: And I'm like I wish I would have just leaned
[59:20] Speaker 1: into this a little bit more, you know, but yeah,
[59:22] Speaker 1: I'm I'm I'm with you. With with Washington, I genuinely
[59:25] Speaker 1: think that he has I mean, we saw it last year,
[59:28] Speaker 1: his upside down the stretch and they were a top
[59:30] Speaker 1: three offense and touchdowns per game like they were, they
[59:32] Speaker 1: were one of the best offenses in football when they
[59:34] Speaker 1: started to focus that offense, that that offense and that
[59:37] Speaker 1: passing attack through him, even against some tough. I mean
[59:40] Speaker 1: that Denver game was the one that really got me
[59:41] Speaker 1: where I'm like, I'm like, oh, okay, so they can
[59:44] Speaker 1: do this against a defense like Denver's nothing on the road.
[59:49] Speaker 3: So again, I'll kind of draw js N with DK
[59:54] Speaker 3: METCF there those first couple of years where he's mostly
[59:57] Speaker 3: a slot player and he's doing but he's still doing
[1:00:01] Speaker 3: downfield stuff. And you know, I'm gonna Rada do that.
[1:00:05] Speaker 3: I'm gonna Radam go downfield. Yeah, you know, very far.
[1:00:08] Speaker 3: And it's hard now that Jaysn broke out to be
[1:00:11] Speaker 3: like next JSN, all you need to do is put
[1:00:13] Speaker 3: him on the outside. I don't know that for sure
[1:00:15] Speaker 3: because I didn't know for sure that JSM would do that,
[1:00:17] Speaker 3: but yeah, I'm more excited by him. And to be honest,
[1:00:22] Speaker 3: after I came away from that Brian Thomas film review,
[1:00:24] Speaker 3: if somebody had offered me a first round pick for
[1:00:26] Speaker 3: Brian Thomas in the NFL draft, yeah, even on the
[1:00:30] Speaker 3: rookie contract, I probably would have done it.
[1:00:33] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
[1:00:34] Speaker 1: Also Brian Thomas, I said this on a show I
[1:00:36] Speaker 1: had rich reebar On and we did a players to
[1:00:38] Speaker 1: avoid episode and he brought up Brian Thomas as one
[1:00:41] Speaker 1: of the players and he's he's gonna be one of
[1:00:43] Speaker 1: those players that is going to be such a headache
[1:00:45] Speaker 1: and a managed league. And so if you guys play
[1:00:48] Speaker 1: best ball, like get that exposure there, because he's gonna
[1:00:51] Speaker 1: have big plays, spiked weeks, you know, like he's he's
[1:00:54] Speaker 1: just a classic better and best ball type player and
[1:00:56] Speaker 1: he probably will have decent production at the end of
[1:00:59] Speaker 1: the season. If this off does click, it's just probably
[1:01:02] Speaker 1: gonna be somewhat of a headache, you know. I think
[1:01:04] Speaker 1: I think Parker Washington's gonna just gonna be way, way
[1:01:06] Speaker 1: more reliable.
[1:01:06] Speaker 2: All Right. I want to give you one more more
[1:01:08] Speaker 2: well Steelers backfield.
[1:01:10] Speaker 1: Because you have on one side Jalen Warren, who I
[1:01:13] Speaker 1: went on your show and said, you love it.
[1:01:14] Speaker 2: I think that ye yeah.
[1:01:15] Speaker 1: Talent wise, I think he's like a fringe top ten
[1:01:18] Speaker 1: running back in the league. And then you have Rico Dowdell,
[1:01:20] Speaker 1: who people think is Mike McCarthy's son because of the
[1:01:23] Speaker 1: way that he's been tied to McCarthy and you know
[1:01:25] Speaker 1: it's his guy. So how do you feel about that
[1:01:27] Speaker 1: backfield in general going into this year?
[1:01:30] Speaker 3: I mean Warren, I want Warren and it's really I'm
[1:01:34] Speaker 3: sure that it is a split, because they mostly are
[1:01:37] Speaker 3: splits these days.
[1:01:38] Speaker 2: That's just the way it is.
[1:01:39] Speaker 3: And so give me the guy I think is better,
[1:01:41] Speaker 3: which isn't to say Doubtell is bad. He's Douwbdell's had
[1:01:44] Speaker 3: such a great story. You want to talk about things
[1:01:47] Speaker 3: that make you like the NFL. Think about Rico Doubts right,
[1:01:49] Speaker 3: like not a prospect and you know, a practice squad
[1:01:54] Speaker 3: player and just barely hanging on in Dallas and then
[1:01:57] Speaker 3: gets a chance and looks great, but they won't sign
[1:01:59] Speaker 3: him to a contray why I mean it worked out? Yeah,
[1:02:02] Speaker 3: I don't understand why you wouldn't have just paid him
[1:02:05] Speaker 3: the two million dollars you pay Javonte Williams. It just
[1:02:07] Speaker 3: seems really strange to me. Then he goes to Carolina,
[1:02:09] Speaker 3: seems buried. Nope, takes that job over terrific and now
[1:02:13] Speaker 3: goes to Pittsburgh and still didn't get great money, but
[1:02:16] Speaker 3: like a little more money. So love the story and
[1:02:18] Speaker 3: think he's a good player, like more a power back
[1:02:21] Speaker 3: than not a little bit of speed, a little bit
[1:02:23] Speaker 3: of wiggle. He's okay, I could catch it a little bit,
[1:02:25] Speaker 3: but you said it on my show best. I mean,
[1:02:28] Speaker 3: Jalen Warren is an extremely talented person. He is very
[1:02:33] Speaker 3: very good, and so like do I reach to get
[1:02:38] Speaker 3: Jalen Warren. He's a flex, but I will definitely choose
[1:02:41] Speaker 3: him over Daubtle.
[1:02:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, you know if you want some data to the
[1:02:45] Speaker 1: Jalen Warren stuff too, because on that show I couldn't
[1:02:48] Speaker 1: talk about data, as we know, I was not allowed
[1:02:51] Speaker 1: to bring up data on that episode exactly. But since
[1:02:55] Speaker 1: Jalen Warren entered the league among relevant why I can't remember.
[1:02:59] Speaker 1: I think it was like an eight sample running back
[1:03:01] Speaker 1: sample of a certain routes run threshold. He's fourth in
[1:03:04] Speaker 1: the NFL and yards per route run, behind only Christian McCaffrey,
[1:03:08] Speaker 1: Austin Eckler, and Bucky Irving actually, who's very good per
[1:03:11] Speaker 1: route run.
[1:03:11] Speaker 2: It's just they don't deploy him enough in that way.
[1:03:14] Speaker 1: And then in terms of yards per carry, which is
[1:03:16] Speaker 1: a bad metric, especially with low sample sizes. But I
[1:03:20] Speaker 1: looked at only running backs in Sandra of the league
[1:03:21] Speaker 1: with four hundred and more rush attempts, which starts to
[1:03:24] Speaker 1: stabilize more once you get that much volume, and he's
[1:03:26] Speaker 1: top ten and yards per attempt as well, on the
[1:03:29] Speaker 1: ground among forty two running backs. So like, he's literally
[1:03:32] Speaker 1: like this combination. He's ahead and yards per attempt than
[1:03:35] Speaker 1: all the other running back the three other running backs
[1:03:37] Speaker 1: that I just named. So he just got this really
[1:03:40] Speaker 1: unique combination that you just don't find elsewhere. He's really
[1:03:43] Speaker 1: good in pass pro two, which is something that obviously
[1:03:46] Speaker 1: doesn't get talked about much on fantasy shows and such.
[1:03:49] Speaker 3: But he keeps him on the field.
[1:03:51] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And you pair him with a guy
[1:03:53] Speaker 1: and Aaron Rodgers, who's his teams have ranked third and
[1:03:56] Speaker 1: running back target share the last two years.
[1:03:57] Speaker 2: Because he's still afraid to throw the ball down the field.
[1:04:00] Speaker 2: Oh but you know, it's really.
[1:04:02] Speaker 3: If only he'd been on a team with Anaron Rodgers
[1:04:03] Speaker 3: last year and caught the ball up.
[1:04:04] Speaker 2: Oops, Kenneth gained.
[1:04:07] Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean like but like, to me, the
[1:04:10] Speaker 1: fit is a is I mean, he's just I just
[1:04:12] Speaker 1: think he's good. And it's it's I agree, It's like
[1:04:14] Speaker 1: I don't mind out all. I think Daldll's fine.
[1:04:16] Speaker 3: Yeah, Dallas fine, And like I don't think we're sitting
[1:04:19] Speaker 3: here saying And that was the day we decided Jalen
[1:04:21] Speaker 3: Warren was a top ten running back in the league.
[1:04:23] Speaker 3: He's not, he's not, he's he's but he's good. He
[1:04:26] Speaker 3: probably is a top twenty running back in the league.
[1:04:28] Speaker 3: I think, yeah, talent was not not really fantasy wise
[1:04:32] Speaker 3: because of all various external factors. But I don't have
[1:04:35] Speaker 3: him thirty, you know, I have him in the twenties.
[1:04:37] Speaker 2: Like he's good.
[1:04:38] Speaker 3: He's a good player.
[1:04:39] Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, before I let you go, yes, I
[1:04:41] Speaker 1: need you to give me and the listeners a bold
[1:04:44] Speaker 1: slash hot take for this season.
[1:04:47] Speaker 3: Oh, a bold slash Matthew Stafford top five quarterback.
[1:04:52] Speaker 2: There you go, you're going, you're you're you're bucking the
[1:04:54] Speaker 2: regression trends. It is.
[1:04:55] Speaker 1: I was actually talking about this with Rich because we
[1:04:57] Speaker 1: taught like my thing with Stafford. I know, you're you're
[1:05:00] Speaker 1: pro Stafford this year, and I understand the lot I found.
[1:05:03] Speaker 1: I find quarterback adp to be fairly sharp this year
[1:05:06] Speaker 1: for the most part. Like it's not I don't really
[1:05:08] Speaker 1: have like a ton of qualms, just because there's such a.
[1:05:10] Speaker 3: It's sinking cluster. It's sinking yea, which is good?
[1:05:13] Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, which is good, right exactly, And there's such
[1:05:15] Speaker 1: a cluster of players that I could throw a dart
[1:05:18] Speaker 1: at from like QB seven or eight to like QB
[1:05:21] Speaker 1: sixteen and not really feel that much different about those players, right,
[1:05:25] Speaker 1: But let everyon know where they can find you, and
[1:05:28] Speaker 1: you know your book of course, and you know everything
[1:05:31] Speaker 1: that you're gonna be doing during the season.
[1:05:33] Speaker 3: Like that, Pound foolish, Pound foolish. Just go to Harris

[1:05:52] Speaker 1: everyone in this draft guide that has been a player

[1:05:58] Speaker 1: it's just a like if, Like players should not want
[1:06:01] Speaker 1: to be on this list because it could just end
