[0:00] Speaker 1: Eric Balkman is a content producer at the FFPC who
[0:03] Speaker 1: hosts a ton of shows, including the High Stakes Fantasy
[0:06] Speaker 1: Football Hour and the Rotovis High Stakes Lowdown. He's a
[0:09] Speaker 1: Packers season ticket holder, a loyal Brewers fan, and he's
[0:11] Speaker 1: got the most epic beard in the fantasy football space.
[0:14] Speaker 2: These are his late round perspectives.
[0:28] Speaker 3: I feel like complete crap for two reasons right now, JJ.
[0:32] Speaker 3: The first reason is I just rammed some venison summer
[0:36] Speaker 3: sausage down my gullet because I was starving, and I'm
[0:39] Speaker 3: totally regretting that decision right now. The second is I
[0:43] Speaker 3: spent nearly $ 6, 000 a few hours ago on.
[0:48] Speaker 3: Game six and game seven world series tickets for my
[0:52] Speaker 3: Milwaukee brewers.
[0:53] Speaker 4: Wow.
[0:54] Speaker 3: It may not get there. It may not get to
[0:56] Speaker 3: game six, may not get to game seven. And quite frankly,
[1:00] Speaker 3: it may not like, they may not get to the
[1:01] Speaker 3: world series.
[1:02] Speaker 4: They haven't beaten the Dodgers, you know?
[1:04] Speaker 3: Yeah. And, and by the time this, this airs, we'll know, but, but,
[1:08] Speaker 3: but I, I definitely, you know, it's one of those
[1:11] Speaker 3: once in a lifetime things.
[1:12] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:13] Speaker 3: And I was three years old when the brewers were
[1:16] Speaker 3: in the world series last time.
[1:17] Speaker 4: Obviously I don't remember it, And I just, I just remember.
[1:20] Speaker 3: The feeling of being at Pfizer forum when the box
[1:23] Speaker 3: won the title a few years ago.
[1:25] Speaker 4: Unbelievable. Hopefully we can replicate that this year. That's baseball.
[1:29] Speaker 4: That's baseball. Nobody cares.
[1:31] Speaker 1: Hey, to be fair, to be fair, this is the
[1:33] Speaker 1: third straight perspectives episode where we've opened up about baseball.
[1:38] Speaker 1: Dave Richard, two weeks ago, he was wearing a white
[1:40] Speaker 1: socks Jersey. Obviously we know, unfortunately how things went there.
[1:45] Speaker 1: And then fabs was on last week and he was
[1:46] Speaker 1: talking about the Yankees and we know how, I mean,
[1:48] Speaker 1: By the time he was talking about it, they had
[1:49] Speaker 1: already lost.
[1:51] Speaker 2: And then now, now you get the brew crew doing
[1:53] Speaker 2: their thing. I'm just sitting here.
[1:54] Speaker 1: Jealous as a pirates fan is my, I mean, I
[1:58] Speaker 1: haven't experienced the only thing that I've like kind of
[2:01] Speaker 1: experienced as an adult been, you know, that like 13, 14,
[2:05] Speaker 1: 15 type timeframe where they were like fun and decent. And,
[2:09] Speaker 1: but they just kept hitting these buzz saws in the
[2:11] Speaker 1: wild card round, you know, the, the, the playing game
[2:13] Speaker 1: every year.
[2:14] Speaker 4: I know.
[2:14] Speaker 3: I remember like one of the, like I would, I
[2:16] Speaker 3: was really getting into baseball when I was a kid.
[2:19] Speaker 3: those pirates Braves or that pirates Braves series when they
[2:21] Speaker 3: had the bonds and Bonilla and Vince like, and, and,
[2:25] Speaker 3: and wasn't it the bonds throw to the plate?
[2:28] Speaker 4: Yes.
[2:28] Speaker 3: Um, uh, Sid Breen, I feel like was the guy
[2:31] Speaker 3: that scored Francisco.
[2:32] Speaker 4: Cabrera was the guy that hit it.
[2:34] Speaker 3: And i'm and i was dude i and and like
[2:37] Speaker 3: i've changed a little bit on this but i was
[2:39] Speaker 3: a massive barry bonds fan like growing up yeah like
[2:42] Speaker 3: like from his pie and then he went to san
[2:44] Speaker 3: francisco i have an uncle who lives in san francisco
[2:46] Speaker 3: right outside san francisco so um like even when he
[2:49] Speaker 3: was a giant i was still following him i still
[2:51] Speaker 3: have like hundreds of barry bonds cards i was i
[2:54] Speaker 3: was absolutely loving bonds and the pirates too and i
[2:58] Speaker 3: i think that there's something like there's like this, and
[3:02] Speaker 3: I know you're not in Pittsburgh anymore, but I think
[3:04] Speaker 3: there's this like kinship that Pittsburgh and like Green Bay,
[3:07] Speaker 3: like Northeast Wisconsin. I think that there's a, there's a
[3:10] Speaker 3: lot of salt of the earth type people there. And
[3:12] Speaker 3: I feel like we're very, very similar Packers fans, Steelers fans, very,
[3:14] Speaker 3: very similar.
[3:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, 100%.
[3:17] Speaker 1: That's why I look at Milwaukee, I know they're quote-unquote
[3:19] Speaker 1: division rivals and such, but I'm like, yeah, that would
[3:22] Speaker 1: be sweet. If you grew up in a smaller market area,
[3:27] Speaker 1: a Midwest city, whatever.
[3:30] Speaker 2: The case may be, you're not rooting for the Dodgers.
[3:33] Speaker 2: We'll say that much. You're just not.
[3:35] Speaker 1: It's similar to how I think a lot of people
[3:39] Speaker 1: view the Bills in football, where you're just like, Yeah,
[3:42] Speaker 1: I think Buffalo fans deserve this at some point, you know,
[3:45] Speaker 1: like at some point, let's hope that they get that
[3:48] Speaker 1: W because, you know, they've been through what they've been there.
[3:50] Speaker 1: Or you could say the same thing about I know
[3:52] Speaker 1: that you probably don't want to say don't want to
[3:53] Speaker 1: hear this, but.
[3:53] Speaker 2: Like Minnesota, right? The folks in Minnesota, like they're good people.
[3:58] Speaker 1: They probably not not have to live through what they've
[4:01] Speaker 1: lived through as sports fans.
[4:04] Speaker 4: I think that it just goes back to the mentality
[4:06] Speaker 4: of the underdog, right?
[4:07] Speaker 3: Like we, we America, it's funny because America loves winners
[4:12] Speaker 3: until what's the line from dark night until they live
[4:14] Speaker 3: long enough to see themselves become the villain.
[4:16] Speaker 4: Dodgers are a villain. Yankees have become a villain.
[4:19] Speaker 3: You know, you think about homes became a villain, right?
[4:22] Speaker 3: Like my homes became, that's a perfect example.
[4:24] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[4:24] Speaker 4: And, and America loves the underdog. Now here's the thing.
[4:27] Speaker 3: I know that if the brewers somehow find a way
[4:31] Speaker 3: to get to the world series and win it.
[4:32] Speaker 4: This year, that's where America's empathy ends.
[4:36] Speaker 3: Like then, then they're done with the brewers. Then they're,
[4:39] Speaker 3: then they're onto the rays or the guardians or what,
[4:41] Speaker 3: what have you. Cause, cause all they, they already want it,
[4:43] Speaker 3: you know? So we're good now. Milwaukee got their reward,
[4:46] Speaker 3: which I'm fine with. Like I, you root for who
[4:48] Speaker 3: you root for. Um, I don't really root against it.
[4:50] Speaker 3: I know I probably should root against like the Vikings
[4:53] Speaker 3: and the bears and so on and so forth. I don't,
[4:55] Speaker 3: I don't harbor ill will to those things. Maybe that doesn't,
[4:58] Speaker 3: I'm just not a true fan then.
[5:00] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[5:00] Speaker 2: You're just mature. That's all.
[5:02] Speaker 4: I think that's what it is.
[5:03] Speaker 3: And I'll tell you this, JJ, and I promise you
[5:06] Speaker 3: we're going to get to this in a second, like
[5:07] Speaker 3: what we're going to talk about. I had a local,
[5:11] Speaker 3: and you know what? I'm going to save this. I'm
[5:12] Speaker 3: going to save this because it's going to help answer
[5:14] Speaker 3: one of the questions. So I'll save it for now,
[5:16] Speaker 3: and we'll get back.
[5:16] Speaker 4: To it in a second.
[5:17] Speaker 1: Okay well let's talk about you first off beard looks
[5:19] Speaker 1: great thank you per use how long how long has
[5:22] Speaker 1: that been going.
[5:23] Speaker 3: August of 22 was the last time i had a
[5:26] Speaker 3: clean shaven face august i.
[5:28] Speaker 1: Literally i have no perspective of how long something like
[5:32] Speaker 1: that would take you know what i mean like because
[5:34] Speaker 1: i'm just trimming my i do like beard trimmer stuff
[5:36] Speaker 1: whatever and like that's just you know i i don't
[5:38] Speaker 1: i don't think about how long all that would go
[5:41] Speaker 1: for it was there a reason that you that you
[5:42] Speaker 1: went in that direction.
[5:43] Speaker 3: So this will help answer the question, but I have
[5:46] Speaker 3: two full-time jobs and kind of a quasi-part-time job.
[5:50] Speaker 4: So time is at a premium for me.
[5:52] Speaker 3: And I think back in August, it was right when
[5:54] Speaker 3: the cusp of draft season was hitting FFPC, and we
[5:57] Speaker 3: had the draft-a-thon coming up, and then obviously our Vegas events,
[6:00] Speaker 3: and then I was doing a lot of shows and
[6:02] Speaker 3: doing a lot of stuff. And it just got to
[6:04] Speaker 3: be one of those things where I just neglected to shave.
[6:07] Speaker 4: I just.
[6:08] Speaker 3: for a week or two and then i'm like you
[6:09] Speaker 3: know what i'm gonna grow it out see what it's
[6:11] Speaker 3: like and then it got to be the point and
[6:13] Speaker 3: and this is maybe like a a mental illness or
[6:16] Speaker 3: something i have i shouldn't use that term but some
[6:18] Speaker 3: sort of mental whatever where now i just want to
[6:20] Speaker 3: see how long i can get it right and and
[6:23] Speaker 3: and so i know that once i shaved my beard
[6:26] Speaker 3: off it will never be i will never grow it
[6:28] Speaker 3: to this length ever again for the rest of my
[6:29] Speaker 3: life i just yeah right it won't happen again So
[6:32] Speaker 3: now at this point, I want to see how long
[6:33] Speaker 3: I can get it. There's been talk about like, when
[6:35] Speaker 3: I do shave it off, are we going to do
[6:37] Speaker 3: it on a show? And why are we going to
[6:38] Speaker 3: like have some sort of like charity, you know, like
[6:41] Speaker 3: hook that up and, and we'll probably do something like that.
[6:44] Speaker 3: I'd like to say that 2027, the beard is gone,
[6:48] Speaker 3: but I've said that the last three years and it
[6:50] Speaker 3: hasn't come off yet.
[6:51] Speaker 2: So who does it, does it get obnoxious?
[6:54] Speaker 1: See like my, when mine gets like a little bit,
[6:56] Speaker 1: just like even just a little bit, I'm like, this is.
[6:58] Speaker 3: Getting like itchy and annoying and you know, I don't get,
[7:01] Speaker 3: I don't get itchiness anymore. And, and living in Northeast Wisconsin,
[7:04] Speaker 3: I mean, we have 11 month winters up here. So I, my,
[7:07] Speaker 3: my face always stays nice and warm. I will say like,
[7:10] Speaker 3: if I don't, and I do trim my mustache, if
[7:12] Speaker 3: that starts growing over my lip, then I get kind
[7:15] Speaker 3: of annoyed, but that's about it. I don't really, I'm
[7:17] Speaker 3: pretty laissez faire when it comes to the rest of it. Okay.
[7:20] Speaker 3: All right.
[7:20] Speaker 2: Well, let's talk football. Let's talk.
[7:22] Speaker 4: Sure.
[7:22] Speaker 3: Yes.
[7:22] Speaker 4: Okay.
[7:23] Speaker 1: First off, Introduce yourself to the Perspectives family here listening.
[7:28] Speaker 1: Your background, you've been around for a minute. You and
[7:30] Speaker 1: I have done shows together at times periodically through the year.
[7:34] Speaker 1: I mean, it's been a really long time at this point,
[7:35] Speaker 1: but how did you get going and what are you
[7:38] Speaker 1: doing now in the space?
[7:39] Speaker 3: So originally, FFPC co-founder Dave Gerzak, I worked for him.
[7:44] Speaker 3: I still work for him for another gig for an
[7:47] Speaker 3: e-commerce website that he owns. And, um, I started that
[7:51] Speaker 3: in 2002 now in 2008. Um, and this is a
[7:55] Speaker 3: little bit of background on the high stakes fantasy football
[7:57] Speaker 3: industry in 2008, the dominant force out there was, and
[8:00] Speaker 3: it had been for, for the better part of a
[8:02] Speaker 3: decade was the world championship of fantasy football. There were
[8:05] Speaker 3: whispers and rumors and beliefs among certain players that maybe
[8:09] Speaker 3: this did not have the longevity, that maybe that contest
[8:14] Speaker 3: was not in the greatest of spaces. So three guys, Dave,
[8:19] Speaker 3: Alex Kaganovsky, who's the other FFPC co-founder, and then another
[8:21] Speaker 3: silent partner who, because of his job in the financial industry,
[8:26] Speaker 3: he could not really be a part of the FFPC.
[8:29] Speaker 3: So he, so it was those two guys and they
[8:32] Speaker 3: started the FFPC in 2008. Now, um, they would, we'd
[8:36] Speaker 3: have a live event out in Las Vegas and it varied.
[8:39] Speaker 3: Like sometimes it's at Rio, sometimes that Caesars, uh, right
[8:42] Speaker 3: now we're at Planet Hollywood, but they would have these
[8:44] Speaker 3: live events out there where people are drafting teams. Now,
[8:46] Speaker 3: the way we do it and the way we've done
[8:48] Speaker 3: it the last 10 years is as people are drafting
[8:51] Speaker 3: players and we're putting the stickers up on the board,
[8:53] Speaker 3: we have a, we have an app where we're entering
[8:55] Speaker 3: in the picks and Well, back in 2008, we didn't
[8:58] Speaker 3: have that. So when the drafts would get done around,
[9:01] Speaker 3: you know, eight o'clock, nine o'clock Pacific time, Dave would
[9:05] Speaker 3: email me and say, Hey, put yourself on the clock.
[9:07] Speaker 3: This is for the other gig I was working for.
[9:08] Speaker 3: I need you to enter in all these rosters. And
[9:10] Speaker 3: he and I had been playing fantasy football for like
[9:12] Speaker 3: 10 years together.
[9:13] Speaker 4: So he knew, you know, whatever.
[9:15] Speaker 3: So then I did that, and then it became a
[9:17] Speaker 3: yearly thing, and then sort of like my duties expanded,
[9:20] Speaker 3: and then when I graduated college late, I graduated in 2011,
[9:25] Speaker 3: and then in 2012, I was looking for a gig.
[9:28] Speaker 4: So I was a double major.
[9:29] Speaker 3: I was journalism and then radio, TV, film, and I
[9:32] Speaker 3: was looking for a gig in local television and local radio,
[9:35] Speaker 3: and I kept working that other gig with Dave while
[9:38] Speaker 3: I was looking for a job, and he said, hey,
[9:39] Speaker 3: why don't you just start a podcast?
[9:42] Speaker 4: And I said, well, yeah, I hadn't really considered that,
[9:44] Speaker 4: but sure.
[9:45] Speaker 3: So we started an FFPC podcast titled The High Stakes
[9:48] Speaker 3: Fantasy Football Hour.
[9:49] Speaker 4: It aired at night.
[9:50] Speaker 3: It still airs at nine o'clock or 10 o'clock Friday nights.
[9:53] Speaker 3: And it was sort of like there was another longstanding
[9:56] Speaker 3: high stakes fantasy football podcast that went out right before it.
[9:59] Speaker 4: So it was kind of like... a block.
[10:00] Speaker 3: Like you got two hours of your dose of high
[10:02] Speaker 3: stakes fantasy football. So so I yeah, I said, let's
[10:05] Speaker 3: do that. And then that expanded into now I'm doing
[10:10] Speaker 3: four shows for FFPC. As of January 1st of this year,
[10:14] Speaker 3: I became full-time there. They started just giving me more
[10:17] Speaker 3: and more responsibilities and stuff. And so now I'm technically
[10:22] Speaker 3: an employee of it. And Brian Drake from... uh, fantasy
[10:27] Speaker 3: points said something when he was watching one of my shows,
[10:29] Speaker 3: he was in the chat and he said, well, Eric
[10:31] Speaker 3: Balkman is, he's gotta be one of the most underrated
[10:33] Speaker 3: fantasy analysts out there.
[10:34] Speaker 4: And I, and I, well, I appreciate that.
[10:36] Speaker 3: I really resent it because I am just sort of
[10:38] Speaker 3: like a bystander and all this soaking up as much
[10:41] Speaker 3: information as I can. And I feel like that's what
[10:43] Speaker 3: I've been doing with FFPC. uh, over the course of
[10:46] Speaker 3: the last, you know, nearly 20 years now is talking
[10:49] Speaker 3: to high stakes players, talking to other people in the
[10:51] Speaker 3: industry and just trying to become a better fantasy football player.
[10:53] Speaker 3: And JJ, isn't that what we're all just trying to
[10:56] Speaker 3: do is win more games, win more leagues.
[10:58] Speaker 4: I think that's what the whole idea is.
[11:00] Speaker 2: A hundred percent, man.
[11:01] Speaker 1: I mean, that that's, that's a big reason why I
[11:02] Speaker 1: wanted to start perspectives when I did, you know, a
[11:04] Speaker 1: few years ago is that I wanted to have a
[11:07] Speaker 1: show that was not just me spewing information to an audience.
[11:11] Speaker 1: And it was me having these conversations, learning more you know,
[11:14] Speaker 1: perspectives coming from the idea of getting other people's perspectives.
[11:18] Speaker 1: And it's been great from that standpoint, you know, like
[11:21] Speaker 1: it's a really important thing to have these conversations, to
[11:24] Speaker 1: talk to people. I mean, you've now talked to every
[11:28] Speaker 1: high stakes person out there, right?
[11:31] Speaker 4: I mean, I would say this, it is far from it.
[11:33] Speaker 4: Like there are so.
[11:34] Speaker 3: Many, like originally, and I'll just tell you this, just
[11:36] Speaker 3: a bit of background on the original podcast that started
[11:39] Speaker 3: the High Stakes Fantasy Football Hour. The original idea was
[11:42] Speaker 3: to get people excited to come out and draft not
[11:46] Speaker 3: only with the ffpc but draft live with us in
[11:48] Speaker 3: las vegas right yeah and then that quickly evolved within
[11:52] Speaker 3: like a year and you know i'm talking to all
[11:54] Speaker 3: these guys that are and women too that are putting
[11:56] Speaker 3: up serious cash um of their own money to try
[12:00] Speaker 3: to win you know six and seven figure grand prize
[12:02] Speaker 3: and like nobody ever hears about them and this was
[12:04] Speaker 3: like kind of pre-twitter a little bit like obviously before
[12:08] Speaker 3: twitter exploded but like none of these people have an
[12:10] Speaker 3: avenue and, and they have, they have, they have such
[12:13] Speaker 3: great fantasy minds. And so I think that's what, what
[12:15] Speaker 3: all the shows sort of evolved into is like people
[12:18] Speaker 3: that didn't have an avenue to, to, to really help
[12:22] Speaker 3: other people be better fantasy players. I think that's what
[12:25] Speaker 3: the high stakes fantasy football hours become is, is, is
[12:28] Speaker 3: people you would never hear of or they get lost
[12:31] Speaker 3: in the sauce you know you know because the louder
[12:33] Speaker 3: voices drown them out or whatever um i just feel
[12:36] Speaker 3: like that's like a nice little corner forget the high
[12:38] Speaker 3: stakes industry just a nice little corner of the fantasy
[12:40] Speaker 3: football industry yes you get perspectives from all these different
[12:44] Speaker 3: people from all these different walks of life and it's
[12:46] Speaker 3: made me a better player too um getting out of
[12:49] Speaker 3: my own echo chamber i don't know if you dealt
[12:50] Speaker 3: with this jj when you were coming up But getting
[12:53] Speaker 3: out of my own echo chamber was hard. It was really,
[12:56] Speaker 3: really difficult for me to embrace other philosophies and other
[12:59] Speaker 3: strategies and other player evaluations. And I think once I
[13:02] Speaker 3: was really accepting of that, I definitely became a better
[13:05] Speaker 3: player for sure.
[13:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, a lot of people listening to this
[13:08] Speaker 1: probably have no idea that like, I don't know, 10
[13:11] Speaker 1: years ago, I'd say was at its peak when there
[13:13] Speaker 1: were like literal wars, you know, through words on the
[13:17] Speaker 1: internet between folks who are, you know, more high stakes
[13:21] Speaker 1: players versus analysts that out there that maybe weren't playing
[13:24] Speaker 1: in some of these leagues. I think what's been really
[13:27] Speaker 1: cool since that point in time when it probably peaked,
[13:29] Speaker 1: I don't know, I'd say like 10 years ago or
[13:31] Speaker 1: so where it was like, The fantasy industry was kind
[13:33] Speaker 1: of on the come up and there were like more
[13:35] Speaker 1: and more analysts that were doing it for money and
[13:37] Speaker 1: for their job. And then obviously you have these players
[13:40] Speaker 1: who are putting a lot of money on the line
[13:42] Speaker 1: and trying to be profitable and lucrative from just playing
[13:46] Speaker 1: the game when those clashes were happening. Which I think
[13:49] Speaker 1: there was like, if I were to like diagnose that,
[13:52] Speaker 1: I think it was like envy on both sides.
[13:54] Speaker 2: You know, it was like a, it was.
[13:55] Speaker 1: Like the, you know, the high stakes players were like, wait,
[13:58] Speaker 1: why are you getting an audience? And then the people
[14:00] Speaker 1: with an audience were like, oh, I can play better
[14:02] Speaker 1: than you can.
[14:03] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[14:03] Speaker 1: So it was like, it was just sort of this,
[14:05] Speaker 1: like a lot of people just not having any self-awareness
[14:08] Speaker 1: and understandably so, because you're trying to protect what you do, right?
[14:11] Speaker 2: You're trying to protect yourself.
[14:12] Speaker 1: The thing that you feel very passionate about. But what's
[14:15] Speaker 1: been really cool, I think is that like, I've gotten
[14:17] Speaker 1: to know a lot of people who now play, I mean,
[14:19] Speaker 1: whether through you and some of the shows we've done
[14:21] Speaker 1: or like just in general, you know, cause like, you know,
[14:24] Speaker 1: I've then been introduced to some people through that audience or,
[14:27] Speaker 1: you know, whatever.
[14:28] Speaker 2: The case may be.
[14:29] Speaker 1: I think it's been cool to see how there's been
[14:31] Speaker 1: like a merging of, of these worlds and a little
[14:34] Speaker 1: bit like you, you see like really, really good high
[14:37] Speaker 1: stakes players that are giving advice now.
[14:40] Speaker 4: Right?
[14:40] Speaker 1: That are working for some websites and stuff, right? Or
[14:43] Speaker 1: you see people who... I think Bestball has helped too,
[14:46] Speaker 1: where you have these platforms that you're able to at
[14:49] Speaker 1: least show that you're putting money on the line, that
[14:51] Speaker 1: you're doing this. And then I think there's a little
[14:53] Speaker 1: bit more respect then from either side, etc, etc. I
[14:56] Speaker 1: think the more that you get introduced to, okay, I'm
[15:00] Speaker 1: an analyst.
[15:01] Speaker 2: Yeah, I play more money than most people in fantasy football.
[15:03] Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong.
[15:04] Speaker 1: But you know, I'm not doing the, the, the 50, 60, 70,
[15:08] Speaker 1: $ 80, 000 type stuff that, you know, some other people are doing.
[15:11] Speaker 1: And so, but, but like, I think that, that when
[15:14] Speaker 1: you put yourself in those shoes of the other person,
[15:17] Speaker 1: you know, you're able to then, you know, have a
[15:19] Speaker 1: little bit more, uh, you know, humility of what, with
[15:22] Speaker 1: what you're doing, but then also respect for, for what, what.
[15:25] Speaker 2: They're doing as well. And I think that's what we've
[15:28] Speaker 2: seen over the years.
[15:29] Speaker 4: And it's so difficult to do that.
[15:31] Speaker 3: I mean, we are, just as humans, just normally, we
[15:33] Speaker 3: are so committed to our own self-interest in everything.
[15:37] Speaker 4: Like, it's just, it's not being selfish. It's just how, like,
[15:40] Speaker 4: we kind of are, right?
[15:42] Speaker 3: One of the things that I'm always most proud of,
[15:44] Speaker 3: and I remember the war, like, there was a lot
[15:46] Speaker 3: of jealousy, like, as you said, on both sides. Um,
[15:50] Speaker 3: one of the things that I'm always proud of when I, when,
[15:52] Speaker 3: when we have a guy like, I think there's three
[15:55] Speaker 3: guys and I'm probably forgetting some other people, but I
[15:57] Speaker 3: think about when we had Monty fan on, um, um,
[16:01] Speaker 3: high stakes fantasy football or like 10 plus years ago.
[16:04] Speaker 4: Now this dude's working for Roto-Viz, right?
[16:06] Speaker 3: We had Dwayne McFarlane on who's absolutely crushing it and
[16:09] Speaker 3: fantasy life. Um, And his first ever podcast appearance was,
[16:12] Speaker 3: was on our show season two.
[16:14] Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
[16:16] Speaker 3: And, and, uh, and then we have, um, a B bag,
[16:18] Speaker 3: but Tova who granted like probably didn't need us. Like
[16:21] Speaker 3: he came on our show and then he won back
[16:23] Speaker 3: to back mid stakes titles, which was just insane.
[16:26] Speaker 4: He didn't need us for that.
[16:27] Speaker 3: But again, like his first media before he started his
[16:30] Speaker 3: own podcast, was, was on our show.
[16:32] Speaker 4: So, and, and I think about, and then you flip
[16:33] Speaker 4: it over to the, to the reverse side.
[16:35] Speaker 3: I remember in Peter Overzet and Pat Corain, um, were
[16:38] Speaker 3: drafting at the FFPC live events for the first time.
[16:41] Speaker 4: Right.
[16:41] Speaker 3: And, uh, and even they, I, you could tell they
[16:43] Speaker 3: were a little intimidated, not, not, not afraid, but maybe
[16:46] Speaker 3: a little intimidated of like, I remember one of the
[16:49] Speaker 3: things that they said, what in one of the shows
[16:51] Speaker 3: that they were doing out there, they were talking about
[16:53] Speaker 3: their portfolio and they're playing in one FFPC main event
[16:56] Speaker 3: league at the time. And they're like, This is the portfolio,
[16:58] Speaker 3: you know, the better part of $ 2, 000 buying. And now
[17:00] Speaker 3: you look at those guys and they're doing, you know,
[17:03] Speaker 3: dozens of main events every year and all these other things.
[17:06] Speaker 3: So I think social media and the ability for anybody
[17:11] Speaker 3: to have a microphone and a camera has been both
[17:13] Speaker 3: a blessing and a curse. It's definitely helped those two
[17:17] Speaker 3: sides get together. Obviously with the pros versus Joe's thing
[17:20] Speaker 3: that we have with FFPC every year, that's always a
[17:23] Speaker 3: big hit to where, where, you know, the Joe's have
[17:26] Speaker 3: an opportunity to prove that they know more than the
[17:28] Speaker 3: pros and the pros on the flip side can, can,
[17:31] Speaker 3: can absolutely be vindicated by, by winning their leagues or
[17:34] Speaker 3: winning the whole thing, you know? And, And I think
[17:36] Speaker 3: that carries a lot of respect with analysts too, or with,
[17:39] Speaker 3: with regular players as well, when pros are battling these
[17:43] Speaker 3: high rolling Joes and they're still getting it done.
[17:45] Speaker 4: I think there's something there.
[17:46] Speaker 2: I'll say, I'll say this to kind of wrap this up.
[17:48] Speaker 1: Is that like, like when I hear, you know, just
[17:51] Speaker 1: by talking to folks that are sort of in that
[17:53] Speaker 1: in more your arena and such, when I hear that
[17:56] Speaker 1: some high stakes players are like listening to my podcast
[17:59] Speaker 1: or something like that, there is no greater feeling for
[18:01] Speaker 1: me than, i would love to be the show that
[18:04] Speaker 1: and uh someone like that's listening to or or you
[18:06] Speaker 1: know a show that analysts are listening to because they
[18:09] Speaker 1: care about that like that is there's no better like
[18:11] Speaker 1: i mean there's no better feeling and there's no better
[18:13] Speaker 1: honor than that as as an analyst doing this kind
[18:15] Speaker 1: of stuff so like yeah as the years have gone
[18:18] Speaker 1: on i just think it's cool that you know the
[18:19] Speaker 1: two worlds have merged more and more but like i
[18:22] Speaker 1: said you've been talking to these people for for years
[18:24] Speaker 1: now i say these people uh like like they're you
[18:27] Speaker 1: know like like cavemen that that no one knows who
[18:30] Speaker 1: they are.
[18:30] Speaker 4: And cave women and cave.
[18:32] Speaker 1: Women yes yes of course um what do you think
[18:35] Speaker 1: though like with the with these high stakes players what
[18:37] Speaker 1: do you think is one thing that separates them as
[18:39] Speaker 1: fantasy managers as players compared to the average fantasy manager.
[18:43] Speaker 3: So there is a certain sect of like, okay, when
[18:46] Speaker 3: you think about high stakes fantasy football players, there's a
[18:48] Speaker 3: lot of people that believe that these are just people
[18:51] Speaker 3: with way too much money and, and just, just want
[18:54] Speaker 3: the action.
[18:55] Speaker 4: And you know what?
[18:55] Speaker 3: That's probably the case with, with a certain section of,
[18:58] Speaker 3: that's probably the case of a certain section of everything, right? There's,
[19:01] Speaker 3: there's just, there's, there's, there's a certain amount of people
[19:03] Speaker 3: that have, they don't know what to do with all
[19:05] Speaker 3: this money.
[19:05] Speaker 4: And, and, you know, this is an outlet for them.
[19:08] Speaker 3: I do think that the majority of the people who
[19:12] Speaker 3: play in our FFPC main event, which again is like
[19:15] Speaker 3: a $ 2, 000 buy-in, I think the majority of them, it's
[19:19] Speaker 3: still a really significant amount of money. And when you
[19:23] Speaker 3: are investing that of your own money, where if you
[19:25] Speaker 3: don't win, you're out that cash, you see a real
[19:29] Speaker 3: dedication to being up on waivers. making sure that you're
[19:33] Speaker 3: getting the most recent possible information before you hit your lineups,
[19:38] Speaker 3: looking weeks ahead on the schedule to make sure that
[19:41] Speaker 3: you're getting your roster in a position to not only
[19:44] Speaker 3: win this week, but when next week and the week
[19:46] Speaker 3: down the road. So I I think that the casual
[19:49] Speaker 3: player and like, I don't know if you've experienced this JJ,
[19:51] Speaker 3: but like, there's been plenty of times, you know, like
[19:54] Speaker 3: I play in probably like 40 or 50 leagues. Right.
[19:56] Speaker 3: there's times when I don't want to submit waivers and
[19:58] Speaker 3: I don't want to, I don't want to do any
[20:00] Speaker 3: of this. And I just want to check out and
[20:01] Speaker 3: watch a movie or watch a television show. I think
[20:04] Speaker 3: there's a lot of these high stakes players. That's not
[20:06] Speaker 3: how it operates. Like it is football is life for them.
[20:09] Speaker 3: Fantasy football is life for them. And I think the, the,
[20:12] Speaker 3: the dedication, the time commitment, the attention to detail, I
[20:16] Speaker 3: think that's what.
[20:17] Speaker 4: Separates, you know, the, the, you know, the, if high.
[20:22] Speaker 3: Players, that's what separates them from the other 99, uh,
[20:26] Speaker 3: the people who will casually play, the people will get
[20:29] Speaker 3: into it, um, you know, and really, really prep for
[20:32] Speaker 3: their draft. And then they start off one in three.
[20:34] Speaker 3: And instead of like hunkering down and trying to dig
[20:36] Speaker 3: themselves out, they just kind of like, they're waiting for, for, for,
[20:39] Speaker 3: you know, fantasy basketball or, or playoff, you know, fantasy
[20:43] Speaker 3: football stuff. So I think just, it's just, it's I
[20:45] Speaker 3: think there is a there is a work ethic that
[20:48] Speaker 3: that comes with a lot of these, not everybody, but
[20:51] Speaker 3: with a lot of these high stakes players. And I
[20:52] Speaker 3: think that's what sort of separates them from from everybody else.
[20:55] Speaker 1: That's a really good point that I didn't even really
[20:57] Speaker 1: consider as much. I think that what you brought up
[21:00] Speaker 1: about the thinking ahead stuff, you know, like there are many,
[21:03] Speaker 1: many leagues where on FFPC in particular, right, where I'm
[21:07] Speaker 1: looking at waivers each week.
[21:09] Speaker 2: And I'm trying to do that as best as I can.
[21:12] Speaker 2: And then I see a move happen. And I'm like, wait.
[21:14] Speaker 1: And then I look and I'm like, oh, they're literally
[21:16] Speaker 1: like two weeks ahead right now. They're picking up this
[21:19] Speaker 1: defense for this particular... They're thinking through that roster. And
[21:22] Speaker 1: like you said, it's really difficult to do that when
[21:25] Speaker 1: you do have a lot of teams because you have
[21:27] Speaker 1: to think deeply about each one of those teams as
[21:29] Speaker 1: you're managing them. But I have noticed that, especially on FFPC,
[21:33] Speaker 1: where it's going to be... You will find some tough competition,
[21:36] Speaker 1: but you're going to also... You're going to feel better
[21:39] Speaker 1: about those wins when you get them, and you're going
[21:41] Speaker 1: to be able to really see how you stack up
[21:44] Speaker 1: against the top players. There's a lot of content creators
[21:47] Speaker 1: that are out there that are bragging about the leagues
[21:50] Speaker 1: that they're winning and et cetera, et cetera.
[21:52] Speaker 2: And I do think that if you're in that position
[21:55] Speaker 2: where you keep.
[21:56] Speaker 1: Winning and you're doing really well in your home leagues
[21:58] Speaker 1: and stuff like that, I think it's a good idea
[22:00] Speaker 1: to try out a platform like FFPC for that reason.
[22:03] Speaker 3: And I'll say this too, like Alex Kaganovsky, our co-founder,
[22:07] Speaker 3: he always says too, and I think this is totally
[22:09] Speaker 3: appropriate and accurate, that the step from your home league,
[22:14] Speaker 3: your office league, what have you, wherever your buddies league,
[22:17] Speaker 3: to playing in the ffpc it's not really that big
[22:20] Speaker 3: of a leap i mean it is it is it
[22:21] Speaker 3: is a pretty small step and we've had people plenty
[22:25] Speaker 3: of times that come in and crush it right away
[22:28] Speaker 3: now there's i think definitely the majority of people will
[22:31] Speaker 3: come in in their first year in the ffpc and
[22:33] Speaker 3: i've had so many people come on the show yeah
[22:34] Speaker 3: i got my rear end kicked that first year i
[22:36] Speaker 3: didn't know what was going on but then the year
[22:38] Speaker 3: two it seems like you're kind of used to it
[22:40] Speaker 3: there's no intimidation 100% You've done it before. And, and we,
[22:43] Speaker 3: and I've seen those players go on to win four
[22:45] Speaker 3: or five, six, seven figure grand prizes, you know?
[22:48] Speaker 4: So it, it, it can happen. I mean, I think
[22:52] Speaker 4: it's like, what's the, what's the phrase?
[22:53] Speaker 3: Once you're thinking about being retired, you're already retired. I
[22:56] Speaker 3: think once you're thinking about playing an FFPC, you should
[22:59] Speaker 3: just play because I.
[23:00] Speaker 1: Think you'll be pleased at what happens. Yeah, 100%. Another
[23:03] Speaker 1: question I have for you is that do you think,
[23:05] Speaker 1: because I feel like you're in this unique position because
[23:08] Speaker 1: you're talking to players just as frequently as other analysts
[23:13] Speaker 1: and such. It's not just the people who are putting
[23:16] Speaker 1: together video content and podcasts and stuff like that. You're
[23:20] Speaker 1: digging into and having conversations with people who are just
[23:22] Speaker 1: playing and that they're very passionate about this and they
[23:25] Speaker 1: can share their thoughts, etc.
[23:26] Speaker 4: etc.
[23:27] Speaker 1: And so I think that that's a really unique angle
[23:29] Speaker 1: to pick your brain from. And so do you think
[23:32] Speaker 1: after having conversations with these folks, like there's so much
[23:35] Speaker 1: information out there right now, I say this in my
[23:39] Speaker 1: draft guide every year. My home league, my main home
[23:42] Speaker 1: league that's been around since the early 2000s, 2001 or 2002.
[23:47] Speaker 2: My dad's in it. My dad's in his late 70s.
[23:50] Speaker 1: He doesn't follow football nearly as closely as I do.
[23:54] Speaker 2: But he can Google things.
[23:57] Speaker 1: He can talk to AI and ask who the best
[24:01] Speaker 1: sleepers are this year. And then I can come together
[24:03] Speaker 1: and give him some list that he can go to
[24:05] Speaker 1: the auction draft and try to you know, draft those players.
[24:09] Speaker 1: Do you think that the edge for, you know, that,
[24:12] Speaker 1: that these best players you've talked to that they've had
[24:15] Speaker 1: in the past has been shrinking because of the readily
[24:17] Speaker 1: available information that's out there? 150,000%.
[24:19] Speaker 3: Um, the, the, the edge, the edge still exists, but
[24:25] Speaker 3: it is much more difficult to find.
[24:26] Speaker 4: You know, you think about, you talked about your league
[24:28] Speaker 4: that you've.
[24:29] Speaker 3: Been playing in with your buddy since the early 2000s.
[24:31] Speaker 3: Think about what it was like getting information back then
[24:34] Speaker 3: for submitting lineups or submitting waivers or whatever, compared to
[24:37] Speaker 3: now where you just go on your phone, you type
[24:40] Speaker 3: in a player's name onto your X app, and boom,
[24:43] Speaker 3: you have the latest information like that. So I think
[24:46] Speaker 3: it's made finding information completely easier. I think it's been
[24:51] Speaker 3: a godsend, and people who are trying to get out
[24:54] Speaker 3: information to a mass amount of people fast. It's been
[24:57] Speaker 3: easier to do it via X and social media and
[25:00] Speaker 3: podcasts and everything like that.
[25:03] Speaker 4: I still think there's an edge.
[25:05] Speaker 3: I think that some of our best players, I don't
[25:07] Speaker 3: know how they do it, but as far as the
[25:11] Speaker 3: players that they draft... um, each and every year that, that,
[25:15] Speaker 3: that they, they always seem to find that mid round
[25:17] Speaker 3: guy that, and some of that's volume drafting too. I mean,
[25:20] Speaker 3: obviously if you draft in a bunch of leagues, you're
[25:21] Speaker 3: going to hit on some sleepers here and there.
[25:24] Speaker 4: So I still think an edge exists.
[25:26] Speaker 3: Um, but man, you really got to scratch and claw
[25:28] Speaker 3: for it because everybody else's perfect example is this. So I,
[25:33] Speaker 3: I can't play an FFPC because I'm an employee. However,
[25:36] Speaker 3: I can play in the Kentucky fantasy football state championship, KFFSC,
[25:39] Speaker 3: which which my Friday night cohost, Farrell Elliott, who hosts
[25:42] Speaker 3: the pros versus Joes with me, he runs that.
[25:44] Speaker 4: So I have a bunch of leagues there.
[25:45] Speaker 3: I remember back in the day when I go to
[25:47] Speaker 3: this live event in Louisville and like, you'd have these.
[25:50] Speaker 4: People come out of the woodwork on Sunday.
[25:53] Speaker 3: And with, with, you know, with apologies to anybody who
[25:55] Speaker 3: has a magazine, there's a lot of good magazines out there,
[25:57] Speaker 3: but they roll up with magazines and they're, and they're
[26:00] Speaker 3: drafting from that.
[26:01] Speaker 4: And, and they're picking guys.
[26:02] Speaker 3: That tore their ACLs, you know, picking guys that, that,
[26:05] Speaker 3: you know, just way, you know, eight rounds too early.
[26:08] Speaker 4: And it was a feast. Like you would just, you
[26:10] Speaker 4: would feast on these.
[26:11] Speaker 3: It was always Sunday, like Friday and Saturday. It was
[26:12] Speaker 3: pretty sharp, but Sunday you could always, could always feast
[26:15] Speaker 3: on these other, you know, newbie drafters that are just
[26:17] Speaker 3: coming in. That's not the case anymore. And it hasn't
[26:19] Speaker 3: been the case for like 10 years. Like everybody who
[26:22] Speaker 3: is playing is, in high stakes fantasy football. I think
[26:25] Speaker 3: everybody who's playing in, even in casual leagues, it is
[26:29] Speaker 3: so easy to find information that you really, if you
[26:32] Speaker 3: want an edge, if you want an information edge, good luck.
[26:35] Speaker 4: I mean, it exists out there. I haven't found it.
[26:37] Speaker 3: Like I know it's out there cause I know people
[26:38] Speaker 3: are exploiting it, but it is so difficult to find nowadays.
[26:42] Speaker 3: But the other 99% of the information, 95% of the information,
[26:46] Speaker 3: it's so easy to find right now.
[26:47] Speaker 4: And it's really leveled the playing field quite a bit.
[26:50] Speaker 2: So I talked to fabs about this last week.
[26:52] Speaker 1: I think it's, it's, it's very much related to, to this,
[26:56] Speaker 1: where there was something that was posed. I think crack
[26:58] Speaker 1: rock might've been the one that, that posted on Twitter.
[27:01] Speaker 3: Another, another former guest of the high stakes fantasy football.
[27:04] Speaker 3: And that guy's a riot. So, so JJ, you ever,
[27:08] Speaker 3: have you ever heard the term crank and purple?
[27:10] Speaker 2: I don't think so.
[27:11] Speaker 4: Okay crank and purple.
[27:13] Speaker 3: Is something it's so so the ffpc draft boards are
[27:16] Speaker 3: all color-coded where you know running back yeah yeah yeah
[27:19] Speaker 3: so crack rock was the guy who i believe it
[27:21] Speaker 3: was crack rock coined the phrase crank and purple when
[27:24] Speaker 3: he would he would draft a bunch of tight ends
[27:26] Speaker 3: early right crank and purple used to mean three tight
[27:30] Speaker 3: ends to start off the draft because the tight ends
[27:32] Speaker 3: are all purple now i found out from darren armani
[27:34] Speaker 3: from fantasy mojo three tight ends to start off your
[27:37] Speaker 3: ffpc draft is known as the purple sasquatch So there's
[27:40] Speaker 3: all these different terms out.
[27:42] Speaker 4: There right now, but crack rock coin crank and purple.
[27:44] Speaker 2: That's very funny.
[27:45] Speaker 4: And that was a trending hashtag for a while because
[27:47] Speaker 4: they had any, that's hilarious.
[27:49] Speaker 1: Um, but yeah, so like, like I think he was
[27:51] Speaker 1: the one who originally posted on Twitter, but it was
[27:52] Speaker 1: something along the lines of, I at least saw him
[27:54] Speaker 1: in like in a thread about it.
[27:55] Speaker 4: Right.
[27:56] Speaker 1: But it was something along the lines of if you
[27:58] Speaker 1: didn't pay attention to anything in the pre in like August.
[28:01] Speaker 2: That was, that was news item related, right?
[28:04] Speaker 1: Like, I guess I should say like news items, like
[28:07] Speaker 1: injuries and stuff would be one thing, but I mean
[28:09] Speaker 1: more of like hype train type stuff, right?
[28:11] Speaker 2: Would you be better off not listening to that than
[28:13] Speaker 2: listening to that?
[28:14] Speaker 1: And the more that I've thought about it, the more
[28:17] Speaker 1: I do think at this point, probably if you're doing
[28:21] Speaker 1: the research, probably if you're ignoring that stuff, it's, it's likely,
[28:24] Speaker 1: you know, a better idea to, to not be consuming
[28:28] Speaker 1: a whole bunch of, you know, beat writer reports and
[28:30] Speaker 1: stuff like that.
[28:31] Speaker 2: I think if you've been doing this for a long time,
[28:33] Speaker 2: you kind.
[28:33] Speaker 1: Of know which beat reporters kind of know what they're
[28:35] Speaker 1: doing and which ones are a little bit just like
[28:38] Speaker 1: throwing stuff at a wall. But like, I think that
[28:40] Speaker 1: part of like, And it's really hard to do this because, again,
[28:46] Speaker 1: going back to we're human and we're going to have
[28:48] Speaker 1: biases and it's just hard for a lot of people
[28:51] Speaker 1: to think this way. This is where I think some players,
[28:55] Speaker 1: whether they're analysts or not, whether in best ball, whether
[28:59] Speaker 1: in these high stakes leagues on FFPC, they're very good
[29:03] Speaker 1: at tuning out what these hype trains end up being
[29:07] Speaker 1: for the most part, especially when there's not as much
[29:10] Speaker 1: substance to it. Cause there's a lot of times where
[29:12] Speaker 1: I don't want to say I fall victim to the
[29:14] Speaker 1: hype train, but even when I do some research, I'm
[29:17] Speaker 1: still like, like like like if i go in with
[29:20] Speaker 1: a preconceived notion that a player is really really good
[29:23] Speaker 1: or like is is is being hyped right as being
[29:26] Speaker 1: really good and then i find data that maybe suggests
[29:29] Speaker 1: that this player is a little bit overrated it's very
[29:32] Speaker 1: hard and i try my best but i'm just trying
[29:35] Speaker 1: to be you know honest here it's very hard to
[29:38] Speaker 1: then say i'm gonna go against 99% of people right
[29:41] Speaker 1: now and say that this data point or these, you know,
[29:45] Speaker 1: all of this data suggested this player isn't nearly as
[29:48] Speaker 1: good as what is being.
[29:49] Speaker 2: Hyped out there.
[29:50] Speaker 1: I'll bring it down a little bit, but it's, it's not,
[29:52] Speaker 1: you know, every year I look back, I'm like, why
[29:54] Speaker 1: did I do that?
[29:55] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[29:55] Speaker 1: And so, I think for me, what I'm getting at
[29:58] Speaker 1: here is that I have started to lean into the
[30:02] Speaker 1: idea of essentially just doing the opposite of what the
[30:05] Speaker 1: market sentiment is saying. I did that actually with Malik Neighbors,
[30:10] Speaker 1: for instance, when Jackson Dart went down, right?
[30:12] Speaker 2: Where I had a take where... And then I.
[30:14] Speaker 1: Again, after that first week where Jameis and Malik had
[30:17] Speaker 1: a horrible game against Tennessee, I think it was in
[30:20] Speaker 1: the rain, I brought that back a little bit, and
[30:23] Speaker 1: I wish I never did because then obviously the last
[30:25] Speaker 1: two weeks have gone the way that they've gone. But regardless,
[30:29] Speaker 1: it's very easy to log on to Twitter and just
[30:31] Speaker 1: see everyone saying Malik Neighbors is dust. And if you
[30:35] Speaker 1: just keep reading that, you're just reinforced by this idea that, oh,
[30:38] Speaker 1: I must be the problem and that I'm seeing it
[30:40] Speaker 1: this way, but it's actually... This other way, because so
[30:44] Speaker 1: many other people are seeing it that way. So I
[30:46] Speaker 1: guess what I'm saying is, like, do you think there's
[30:47] Speaker 1: validity to the idea of just saying, like, what if
[30:51] Speaker 1: the edge that we can have is actually just going
[30:54] Speaker 1: against market sentiment and not leaning into this?
[30:57] Speaker 3: This could be like a three-hour show. In the future, JJ,
[31:03] Speaker 3: plan this for something in the offseason, in the drafting season,
[31:06] Speaker 3: and just delve into this.
[31:10] Speaker 4: There's so much to unpack.
[31:11] Speaker 3: To answer the question, blanket yes or no, is there
[31:15] Speaker 3: validity to it?
[31:16] Speaker 4: Obviously, yes.
[31:17] Speaker 3: There is definitely validity to it. Is it something I
[31:20] Speaker 3: would want to subscribe to completely? Absolutely not.
[31:23] Speaker 4: Right.
[31:24] Speaker 3: I think that, you know, you think over the years,
[31:27] Speaker 3: you know, think about throw injuries out.
[31:29] Speaker 4: Right. Like you said, it's talking about hype trains.
[31:31] Speaker 3: You know, there there is an Arian Foster hype train
[31:34] Speaker 3: that if you would have ignored that, you probably cost
[31:37] Speaker 3: you leagues when you could have gotten that dude in
[31:39] Speaker 3: like the sixth or seventh round. And he went on
[31:41] Speaker 3: to be fantasy running back one that year. You hurt
[31:44] Speaker 3: yourself if you ignored that. More recently, Puka Nakua, I think,
[31:47] Speaker 3: is a perfect example. His rookie year where there is
[31:52] Speaker 3: definitely a section of people that the truthers that were
[31:57] Speaker 3: saying like, look, I'm telling you right now, this guy's
[31:59] Speaker 3: going to crush it.
[32:00] Speaker 4: And most people ignored that. And then what happened? He
[32:02] Speaker 4: crushed it and he was awesome.
[32:04] Speaker 3: James Robinson is another example, the free agent running back
[32:07] Speaker 3: from Jacksonville. I think if you look back, you know,
[32:10] Speaker 3: when people talk about what does preseason matter, remember Victor
[32:13] Speaker 3: Cruz that one year where he was just crushing it
[32:15] Speaker 3: in preseason. And so many people are like, I'm not
[32:17] Speaker 3: buying into that hype train. Like it's, it's, it's obviously
[32:20] Speaker 3: going to end when regular season starts.
[32:22] Speaker 4: And you know what? It took a knee injury to
[32:23] Speaker 4: really end it. And that was years later for Victor Cruz.
[32:26] Speaker 3: So you do end up, if you blanket cut all
[32:29] Speaker 3: that out, then yes, you will end up missing out
[32:31] Speaker 3: on stuff.
[32:31] Speaker 4: Now flip side of that, I think it's important.
[32:35] Speaker 3: NFL teams are not under any obligation to put out
[32:38] Speaker 3: certain information, most injury information, in the offseason.
[32:42] Speaker 4: And when do we crave football the most, JJ? It's
[32:45] Speaker 4: in the offseason. It's when we can't watch it.
[32:49] Speaker 3: And as a result, I think it's just natural for
[32:51] Speaker 3: us to overrate every single thing that We see in
[32:55] Speaker 3: the news some stuff that wouldn't even qualify as news
[32:58] Speaker 3: in October or November. But we're spending an hour talking
[33:02] Speaker 3: about it on a show, just that topic in June
[33:07] Speaker 3: or whatever. So I think that goes into it as well.
[33:10] Speaker 3: It's a fine line. I mean, you kind of... You
[33:13] Speaker 3: cannot totally ignore it. You cannot totally embrace it. You
[33:17] Speaker 3: have to, you have to kind of, and it just
[33:20] Speaker 3: comes with experience, right? I mean, you, I'm sure you
[33:23] Speaker 3: over the years have learned, like you can sniff out when,
[33:27] Speaker 3: when something has got, you know what, this isn't real.
[33:29] Speaker 2: This is big.
[33:29] Speaker 3: Yeah. And you're never going to be 100% right. That's
[33:34] Speaker 3: just the way it is. But I think with experience
[33:37] Speaker 3: and especially dealing with coaches and beat writers, just more reps,
[33:42] Speaker 3: I think, gives us– it just makes us better fantasy players.
[33:45] Speaker 3: And there's no replication for that. You can't just all
[33:48] Speaker 3: of a sudden advance. It just– It comes with time.
[33:51] Speaker 3: And I think over time, our educated guesses become more educated,
[33:55] Speaker 3: but they're still just that.
[33:56] Speaker 4: They're still just guesses.
[33:58] Speaker 3: And so to buy into the hype train in preseason
[34:03] Speaker 3: is sometimes good.
[34:03] Speaker 4: Sometimes it can be very bad as well.
[34:07] Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of confirmation bias, as you're noting,
[34:09] Speaker 2: that goes on with this, right? Like, if you.
[34:12] Speaker 1: I also think like there's... I try to obviously marry
[34:16] Speaker 1: my analysis with what the hype trains are, you know? Like,
[34:20] Speaker 1: for instance, like I... You know, I could sit here
[34:23] Speaker 1: and talk about Parker Washington because I liked Parker Washington
[34:25] Speaker 1: this year. And then obviously he's doing what he's doing.
[34:27] Speaker 1: And there was a hype train with him. But I
[34:29] Speaker 1: want to go in the opposite direction and say, like,
[34:31] Speaker 1: we don't I mean, I guess we don't know what
[34:32] Speaker 1: the result is going to be.
[34:33] Speaker 2: But I liked Luther Burden this year.
[34:34] Speaker 3: Right.
[34:35] Speaker 2: So I go into the season. He's getting some hype.
[34:37] Speaker 1: I still think that people are kind of overstating what
[34:39] Speaker 1: the true hype was for Burden, because it's not like
[34:42] Speaker 1: he got into like mid round three or anything like
[34:46] Speaker 1: that in most drafts. You know, you're still like a
[34:48] Speaker 1: four or five turn for a lot of drafts and
[34:50] Speaker 1: stuff like that. But regardless of all of that, regardless
[34:53] Speaker 1: of those semantics, the Luther Burden stuff, the stuff that
[34:57] Speaker 1: drives me nuts more is that some people are buying
[35:00] Speaker 1: into the hype train simply because of previous season yards
[35:05] Speaker 1: per outrun or the fit with Ben Johnson only. But
[35:10] Speaker 1: I'm sitting here and I'm like, no, I actually loved
[35:13] Speaker 1: this dude as a prospect. I thought that there was
[35:15] Speaker 1: so much juice to his game there. coming out of
[35:18] Speaker 1: school and then everything since then has only confirmed that
[35:22] Speaker 1: for me and when i go down through my like
[35:24] Speaker 1: from a process standpoint and things just keep getting confirmed
[35:27] Speaker 1: and yes it's not been three years yet it's only
[35:29] Speaker 1: been a year and change for for burden in the
[35:31] Speaker 1: nfl that's when i'm like yeah i'll lean into this
[35:34] Speaker 1: a little bit of course i understand that it could
[35:35] Speaker 1: go south you know this is why he's a fourth
[35:38] Speaker 1: rounder or fifth rounder in some leagues like that's fine
[35:40] Speaker 1: but you know you're weighing that cost benefit another really
[35:43] Speaker 1: good example of this is like jayden blue last year
[35:46] Speaker 1: right and i liked jayden blue as a prospect but
[35:49] Speaker 1: a lot of people were liking him and he got
[35:51] Speaker 1: the hype train going because he was fast and uh
[35:55] Speaker 1: he was playing for the cowboys and there was an
[35:57] Speaker 1: opening in that backfield right my i think my job
[36:00] Speaker 1: and duty as an analyst is to kind of dissect
[36:02] Speaker 1: those situations and explain why i would be in or
[36:06] Speaker 1: out on a certain player you know like that is
[36:08] Speaker 1: getting hyped or who's not whatever the case may be
[36:10] Speaker 1: like And I think that one of the problems is
[36:13] Speaker 1: that when we then finish a season and we look
[36:15] Speaker 1: back on that season and we say, oh, you fell
[36:19] Speaker 1: victim or I, JJ, fell victim to some hype train,
[36:22] Speaker 1: it's very important to go and look at what was
[36:24] Speaker 1: your process when doing that and was there a backbone
[36:27] Speaker 1: to what you were doing when you decided to make
[36:30] Speaker 1: that choice?
[36:30] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[36:32] Speaker 1: And even Jalen Waddle this year, who's going to play tonight,
[36:35] Speaker 1: we're recording this before Thursday, so this is not a
[36:37] Speaker 1: take on.
[36:38] Speaker 2: what's going to happen tonight obviously he's been a bust thus.
[36:40] Speaker 1: Far but i think there's enough data and evidence and
[36:43] Speaker 1: stuff to like i'm not really that mad about the
[36:45] Speaker 1: process of being like into jaylen waddle this year you
[36:48] Speaker 1: know and like i don't want a result like i
[36:51] Speaker 1: did not expect the broncos to be a bottom five
[36:53] Speaker 1: offense you know like i i didn't expect them to
[36:55] Speaker 1: be this bad offensively that was the problem you know
[36:57] Speaker 1: i don't know if it was a waddle problem per
[36:59] Speaker 1: se And so there's that kind of stuff where there's
[37:01] Speaker 1: so much nuance when we go back and we look
[37:04] Speaker 1: at who was hyped, what was hyped, why they were
[37:06] Speaker 1: hyped and all that kind of stuff. I think it's
[37:08] Speaker 1: important to just make sure that like what you're doing
[37:10] Speaker 1: is logical and reasonable when you make that choice. And
[37:12] Speaker 1: then you can't be that mad if you missed out
[37:14] Speaker 1: on that, you know, whether good or bad, if that
[37:17] Speaker 1: choice was logical when.
[37:18] Speaker 4: You made it.
[37:18] Speaker 3: I think the other thing to keep in mind, and
[37:20] Speaker 3: these are all great points too, I think the other
[37:22] Speaker 3: thing to keep in mind if you want to keep
[37:24] Speaker 3: it simple, because obviously a person like you who does
[37:28] Speaker 3: this for a living that spends so much of his
[37:31] Speaker 3: life with your prospect model, with all your models really,
[37:34] Speaker 3: with everything that you and Brandon and David, everybody at
[37:38] Speaker 3: Late Round is doing, you have the luxury, not that
[37:40] Speaker 3: it's a luxury, it can be a burden at some point,
[37:42] Speaker 3: but you have the luxury of sitting down and really
[37:45] Speaker 3: taking the time to crunch all this stuff down and
[37:47] Speaker 3: trusting your process and then testing that process and then
[37:50] Speaker 3: enhancing and improving that process. There are so many casual
[37:54] Speaker 3: players out there, myself included, that don't have the time.
[37:58] Speaker 4: To do that.
[37:58] Speaker 3: And I think one of the things when we see
[38:01] Speaker 3: these hype trains build in the preseason and in drafting
[38:06] Speaker 3: season is just ask yourself one question. And it's not
[38:10] Speaker 3: a perfect substitute, but it is a significant substitute for
[38:13] Speaker 3: everything that you're doing. Just ask yourself, well, what happened?
[38:17] Speaker 3: What happened to create this hype? Did something happen? Was
[38:22] Speaker 3: this created by a bunch of people talking about this
[38:25] Speaker 3: guy on X? Or was there something definitive that just
[38:29] Speaker 3: happened in training camp, preseason, a situation or whatever? And oftentimes,
[38:34] Speaker 3: if you answer the question, we're like, what? I'm not
[38:37] Speaker 3: sure what happened. All of a sudden, then I think
[38:39] Speaker 3: that's kind of a hype train that you can ignore.
[38:42] Speaker 3: Once you have your process of whatever it is, everybody's
[38:47] Speaker 3: got their own thing. High stakes players, content creators, everybody's
[38:50] Speaker 3: got their own thing. But once you have that, I
[38:53] Speaker 3: think as long as you're constantly working to improve it,
[38:56] Speaker 3: then if you're wrong on something, you're wrong on something.
[39:00] Speaker 4: And I meant to bring this up. This is a
[39:02] Speaker 4: good time to bring this up.
[39:03] Speaker 3: One of the things that I think you do so well,
[39:05] Speaker 3: and Ben Gretsch is another person that really embodies this,
[39:08] Speaker 3: and there's others out there too, but you two are
[39:10] Speaker 3: the first people I think of about this. I think
[39:12] Speaker 3: of like sort of like the new modern fantasy analyst
[39:17] Speaker 3: that is just like, you know, going for clicks and
[39:19] Speaker 3: quick quips on, on X or whatever, like X is,
[39:22] Speaker 3: you know, this guy's the next Amon Roth St.
[39:24] Speaker 4: Brown with not a whole lot of process behind that,
[39:27] Speaker 4: you know?
[39:28] Speaker 3: And even if there was like, that's an awfully specific
[39:31] Speaker 3: thing to say what you, what you and Gretch do. And,
[39:34] Speaker 3: and all the time to the point where, where like, I, it's,
[39:38] Speaker 3: it blows me away that people aren't bludgeoned over the
[39:41] Speaker 3: head with this is you're always talking about range of outcomes.
[39:44] Speaker 3: You guys are always like, yes, we're, I like this guy.
[39:48] Speaker 3: Could he fall flat on his face?
[39:50] Speaker 4: Absolutely. Could he be an MVP? Absolutely.
[39:53] Speaker 3: So you're talking about range of outcomes when it comes
[39:56] Speaker 3: to be this stuff. And I just think that the
[39:58] Speaker 3: more that, with apologies to anybody who's watching this who
[40:01] Speaker 3: speaks in absolutes, In regards to fantasy or betting or
[40:04] Speaker 3: whatever it is, I tend to kind of ignore that
[40:07] Speaker 3: kind of stuff because it just doesn't give me a
[40:09] Speaker 3: whole lot of faith in your process, number one. And
[40:12] Speaker 3: then number two, what happens when you're wrong? You were
[40:15] Speaker 3: so sure of this, and then you were wrong about that.
[40:17] Speaker 3: Where do you go from there? So I think you
[40:19] Speaker 3: do an excellent job of that, and it's a good
[40:21] Speaker 3: reminder for anybody who is watching you and you and
[40:25] Speaker 3: Ben and whoever. Um, it's, it's a good reminder to,
[40:29] Speaker 3: to know that even if you are a great fantasy player,
[40:32] Speaker 3: you're probably still getting it wrong at least 35%, 40%
[40:35] Speaker 3: of the time.
[40:36] Speaker 4: And there's no shame in that.
[40:37] Speaker 3: All right.
[40:38] Speaker 1: I want to ask you about free agent budgets. This
[40:40] Speaker 1: is something that I honestly, you know, I have a
[40:43] Speaker 1: process for like everything. And I have a, like a, I,
[40:46] Speaker 1: I have like a subconscious process with fab, right?
[40:49] Speaker 2: Like where I.
[40:50] Speaker 1: Kind of know what direction I want to go in
[40:52] Speaker 1: and what, and it's more of an experience thing for me, right?
[40:54] Speaker 1: Where it's just like, I've just been playing this for
[40:56] Speaker 1: so long and I've been doing, you know, going into
[40:58] Speaker 1: waivers for so long. I generally know, you know, what
[41:01] Speaker 1: to usually expect from certain players, whatever. But how do you, like,
[41:06] Speaker 1: what is your process when you're deciding if you're going
[41:08] Speaker 1: to like spend 70% of your fab for a player?
[41:11] Speaker 4: Okay, so just real quick, real quick story.
[41:14] Speaker 3: The KFFSC holds a Super Bowl Sunday drafting weekend where
[41:19] Speaker 3: I draft like 10 teams, not best ball, but like
[41:22] Speaker 3: we're managed leagues out there. And as a result, we
[41:25] Speaker 3: don't always draft the best players. Like this year, for example,
[41:29] Speaker 3: when the first FAB round came in September, we Nobody
[41:33] Speaker 3: drafted Dijon Stribling back in February. Nobody drafted Marshawn Lloyd,
[41:38] Speaker 3: Jacoby Lane. Jacoby Lane, I guess, was about half and half.
[41:42] Speaker 3: But I ended up blowing. I didn't think I'd win
[41:44] Speaker 3: all these players in the majority of those leagues, and
[41:46] Speaker 3: I did. And so I had very little fab left
[41:50] Speaker 3: in those leagues, which has been very challenging running those leagues.
[41:53] Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing to me is if you
[41:56] Speaker 3: believe in a guy, go get the guy. I'm a
[42:00] Speaker 3: proponent of spending more earlier in the season than later
[42:05] Speaker 3: in the season.
[42:06] Speaker 4: I don't like saving it.
[42:08] Speaker 3: I just feel like there's been so many times where
[42:10] Speaker 3: it's sort of like ending a salary cap draft where
[42:13] Speaker 3: you have money left on the table. Like, well, why
[42:15] Speaker 3: the heck didn't I go that extra buck on this player?
[42:17] Speaker 3: So I tend to spend early. I tend to spend
[42:20] Speaker 3: a lot early and I'll kind of like, you know,
[42:23] Speaker 3: ration it out after that for injuries and bye weeks and.
[42:27] Speaker 4: So on and so forth. I'll tell you this right now,
[42:29] Speaker 4: David Hubbard.
[42:30] Speaker 3: Who won the 2016 FFPC main event along with Nelson Sousa,
[42:34] Speaker 3: Hubbard owns a ton of teams. And with Steve Yergalos,
[42:39] Speaker 3: the series, those two have sort of partnered up, Steve G,
[42:42] Speaker 3: Fantasy Sopranos, for those people who are watching who know.
[42:45] Speaker 3: And Hubbard told me once that He will try to
[42:51] Speaker 3: spend the majority of his fab in September and October
[42:55] Speaker 3: so he doesn't have a whole lot to mess around
[42:57] Speaker 3: with later on in the season. Because he runs so
[43:00] Speaker 3: many teams, he doesn't want to have to worry about
[43:03] Speaker 3: fab and all the significant difference makers in those leagues.
[43:07] Speaker 4: It's easier to... If he goes in on guys, he
[43:10] Speaker 4: believes in, in September. And quite frankly, that's just good advice.
[43:12] Speaker 3: Like I think that the biggest hits sometime come in September,
[43:16] Speaker 3: you know, right away after week one, after week two,
[43:18] Speaker 3: after week three. So I'm, I'm a big proponent of
[43:21] Speaker 3: spending a lot, spending early and you never know, like,
[43:24] Speaker 3: like I just, I continue to get good buys and
[43:26] Speaker 3: discounts off, you know, as you know, players, I never
[43:29] Speaker 3: would have thought I was going to get where I'm
[43:31] Speaker 3: just bidding like the keep them honest type bids.
[43:33] Speaker 4: And I ended up winning the player. You never know.
[43:35] Speaker 3: There are certain players that just don't like spending at all.
[43:39] Speaker 3: And you can use that to your advantage if you
[43:40] Speaker 3: are out there spending and constantly improving that churn of
[43:44] Speaker 3: those last two or three players on your roster.
[43:47] Speaker 1: One of the things that I've been really toying with
[43:49] Speaker 1: in my brain, at least, I haven't really thrown it
[43:51] Speaker 1: out there as like a take, but like it's sort
[43:53] Speaker 1: of the opposite of a chopped league or a guillotine league,
[43:55] Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it, where in a chopped
[43:57] Speaker 1: guillotine league, I tell people to just hold as much
[43:59] Speaker 1: as you possibly can because probabilities on your side to
[44:02] Speaker 1: not spend.
[44:03] Speaker 2: But the difference.
[44:04] Speaker 1: Between that and a regular season long format where there's
[44:08] Speaker 1: 12 teams and is that, you know, that the player
[44:10] Speaker 1: pool is getting better and better every week as teams
[44:12] Speaker 1: get chopped.
[44:13] Speaker 3: Right.
[44:14] Speaker 1: And so you want to play bully later on in
[44:16] Speaker 1: the season because the entire point of that format is
[44:19] Speaker 1: the free agent budget bidding, right? And so the thing
[44:24] Speaker 1: that I toyed with, though, saying that I haven't really
[44:26] Speaker 1: talked through as much is that when you are spending
[44:30] Speaker 1: early in your season, you're, you are getting that player
[44:33] Speaker 1: for the entirety of the season then, as opposed to
[44:36] Speaker 1: waiting and then just getting that player in week 13 onward,
[44:39] Speaker 1: you know, like of course, if Seth McGowan is sitting on,
[44:42] Speaker 1: on waivers right now, right. And Jonathan Taylor goes down
[44:45] Speaker 1: and it's week 11 and Taylor's out for the sea.
[44:48] Speaker 1: Everyone knock on wood right now, but Taylor's, you know,
[44:50] Speaker 1: out for the season. Seth McGowan would be a blow
[44:53] Speaker 1: your fab kind of player, right. Because, you know, he's
[44:56] Speaker 1: more than likely going to take on a pretty big
[44:57] Speaker 1: role in in the Colts offense. But again, you're, you're
[45:00] Speaker 1: getting that, like, it would be great to have all
[45:02] Speaker 1: of your, your cash there. I get it, but you're
[45:04] Speaker 1: also getting that player for only week 12 onward. And
[45:08] Speaker 1: that's not going to be at necessarily as beneficial if
[45:10] Speaker 1: you're like a fringe playoff team or something like that.
[45:12] Speaker 1: And so there is that like nuance of like when
[45:15] Speaker 1: you are getting that player and actually obtaining that player
[45:17] Speaker 1: as well.
[45:18] Speaker 2: To be able to reap the rewards of that player
[45:21] Speaker 2: moving forward versus.
[45:22] Speaker 1: And then not only that, but as the season goes on,
[45:24] Speaker 1: you know, more and more handcuffs end up getting rostered
[45:27] Speaker 1: because we get a better idea of what the landscape
[45:30] Speaker 1: looks like. And we're dropping the ninth and 10th round
[45:34] Speaker 1: players that just didn't work out. You know, that they
[45:36] Speaker 1: were sitting on our roster in September that we're like, yeah,
[45:38] Speaker 1: maybe it's just some variance and they're going to bounce
[45:40] Speaker 1: back in week three or four and then they don't.
[45:42] Speaker 2: And then they're just worthless assets for your team. So
[45:45] Speaker 2: then what do you do?
[45:46] Speaker 1: Well, it's like every week with my rest of season rankings, Eric,
[45:49] Speaker 1: the handcuffs just go higher and higher in my rest
[45:52] Speaker 1: of season rankings because we're learning more information about the
[45:56] Speaker 1: other players that we had hoped for.
[45:58] Speaker 2: But they're not doing anything.
[46:00] Speaker 1: They're clearly going down a path this season where the
[46:03] Speaker 1: hopeful 10th round wide receiver is just not going to
[46:05] Speaker 1: do anything.
[46:06] Speaker 2: I'd rather just have you know, uh, Brian Robinson or whoever, right.
[46:09] Speaker 1: You know, from a rest of season rankings perspective. So
[46:11] Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of that nuance that gets
[46:13] Speaker 1: lost with, with the free agent, uh, bidding, um, that,
[46:16] Speaker 1: that really, I haven't sat down enough to really sit
[46:18] Speaker 1: and like process it out.
[46:20] Speaker 2: That's probably gonna be an off season thing for me though.
[46:22] Speaker 3: I think the other day, just real quick on the,
[46:24] Speaker 3: on the, on the injury way type guys, you know, we,
[46:27] Speaker 3: we have this wide receiver depth and this tight end
[46:29] Speaker 3: depth and this quarterback depth and you know, in like
[46:32] Speaker 3: the high stakes arena, like an FFPC main event, big gorilla,
[46:34] Speaker 3: baby gorilla, whatever. And you need that depth for the
[46:36] Speaker 3: bi-week gauntlet. But once those buys are done and then
[46:39] Speaker 3: you get to the league playoffs and then you get
[46:41] Speaker 3: to the championship round where it's like this three-week sprint,
[46:44] Speaker 3: then you kind of like, I have seen so many
[46:46] Speaker 3: teams with horrible depth win a million bucks or win
[46:50] Speaker 3: 500,000 because they're, number one, they built the team top heavy.
[46:56] Speaker 3: So they can, the lineup sort of sets itself. um,
[47:01] Speaker 3: there's not a whole lot of question of, of, of
[47:04] Speaker 3: getting your start sits wrong because your bench is so bad,
[47:07] Speaker 3: but then you cut all that depth away and then
[47:09] Speaker 3: you load up with all these injury away type running
[47:11] Speaker 3: backs at the end. And then if something happens, Oh
[47:14] Speaker 3: my God, you can go from 300th place up to
[47:17] Speaker 3: first place like that.
[47:18] Speaker 4: With one, you know, with one, one week.
[47:21] Speaker 3: Um, and if you have those guys on your roster too,
[47:24] Speaker 3: and I think like, you know, an FFPC, when you
[47:27] Speaker 3: get to the league playoffs, the four teams that make
[47:29] Speaker 3: your 12 team playoff, they can still bid on players.
[47:32] Speaker 3: And I think there's always like, kind of like a
[47:34] Speaker 3: chase and not a chase. I don't know what the
[47:35] Speaker 3: right term is for it, but a battle to try
[47:37] Speaker 3: to have more money than the other three teams in
[47:40] Speaker 3: the playoffs. So if there's anybody out there, you can
[47:43] Speaker 3: be the bully and pick those guys up, use those
[47:45] Speaker 3: against those guys to, to advance the playoffs.
[47:48] Speaker 4: And then, maybe win a million bucks. So that's, that's
[47:50] Speaker 4: fat dude.
[47:51] Speaker 3: Fab's another thing that, that I think is it's, it's
[47:54] Speaker 3: more art than, than science.
[47:57] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[47:57] Speaker 3: Like maybe there's some science to it that I just
[47:59] Speaker 3: haven't popped onto it yet. I, I just.
[48:01] Speaker 4: Think it's just, it's luck. It's, and, and it's, and
[48:04] Speaker 4: it's experience, you know, just like, yeah.
[48:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, I've gotten the question like through the years where
[48:08] Speaker 1: they're like, when's the where people are like, when's the
[48:09] Speaker 1: best time to spend? And I've done research to see
[48:12] Speaker 1: like where when league winners pop and.
[48:15] Speaker 2: Stuff like that.
[48:15] Speaker 1: It's really hard to find like a definitive like line
[48:18] Speaker 1: for it. And so the more that I've been toying
[48:21] Speaker 1: with it is more of like thinking about from the
[48:23] Speaker 1: game theory perspective of like, When people are picking up backups,
[48:26] Speaker 1: backup running backs, mostly, cause that's, that's what we're going
[48:28] Speaker 1: to spend the most money on. Or, um, you know, like,
[48:31] Speaker 1: like thinking about having that player, like we said, for
[48:35] Speaker 1: a long period of time, as opposed to week 10
[48:37] Speaker 1: onward or whatever the case may be. So like, it's
[48:39] Speaker 1: more of the game theory stuff and thinking about how,
[48:41] Speaker 1: how managers are managing their rosters throughout the season, as
[48:45] Speaker 1: opposed to when the league winners actually hit, you know,
[48:48] Speaker 1: and when those league winners are, are, you know, whether
[48:51] Speaker 1: it's September, October, November, December, um, i i don't think
[48:54] Speaker 1: there's necessarily a true answer for that but i think
[48:57] Speaker 1: all the other stuff leans into what you were saying
[49:00] Speaker 1: of spending early and doing that because you're getting those
[49:05] Speaker 1: players for a long period of time and then as
[49:07] Speaker 1: the season goes you have more information and when you
[49:09] Speaker 1: have more information you start cutting that cutting that bait
[49:12] Speaker 1: you know you're just getting rid of the guys that
[49:13] Speaker 1: just aren't doing anything on your bench you know.
[49:16] Speaker 3: Absolutely i think that there's no real, I think the
[49:19] Speaker 3: part of the reason that you haven't found, or it's
[49:21] Speaker 3: been real difficult to find out when the league winners
[49:23] Speaker 3: hit league winners hit at different times of the year.
[49:25] Speaker 3: You know, sometimes, sometimes it's a torn ACL in September.
[49:28] Speaker 3: Sometimes it's a quarterback change in November. Like you just,
[49:31] Speaker 3: you never really know. And, and it's, it's all over
[49:34] Speaker 3: the place.
[49:35] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[49:36] Speaker 1: It's early, obviously, but when we look back on this season,
[49:40] Speaker 1: Do you think that we're going to see that a
[49:44] Speaker 1: particular draft strategy won out? Or do you think that
[49:47] Speaker 1: this is going to be one of those seasons where
[49:50] Speaker 1: you could go in a lot of different directions with
[49:52] Speaker 1: what the optimal strategy was this year?
[49:54] Speaker 3: I think the latter it's, it's tough to pick one
[49:57] Speaker 3: right now. I think if there's one strategy, I I'm
[50:00] Speaker 3: sure if they, if you're going to tell me, you know, bulky,
[50:04] Speaker 3: tell me one right now that, that worked out in
[50:06] Speaker 3: 2026 is week six. I think if there's one, I
[50:09] Speaker 3: have to say it's, and I know this is something
[50:11] Speaker 3: that you've kind of gone away from as far as
[50:13] Speaker 3: branding goes, but late round quarterback, I think has, has
[50:17] Speaker 3: been working out this year for a lot of people,
[50:19] Speaker 3: you know, whether it's best ball, whether it's, whether it's redraft.
[50:22] Speaker 3: I mean, if, if you ended up skipping over the
[50:25] Speaker 3: josh allen's the lamar jackson's the the drake may is
[50:28] Speaker 3: another great example if you end up skipping over those
[50:31] Speaker 3: and and then you hit on guys like jordan love
[50:34] Speaker 3: rock purdy um jacoby brissett matthew stafford to a certain
[50:37] Speaker 3: degree kyler murray we'll see what happens there bryce freaking
[50:41] Speaker 3: young for God's sake.
[50:43] Speaker 4: Jared Goff is another one. Absolutely. I think, or Tyler
[50:46] Speaker 4: Shuck is another one.
[50:47] Speaker 3: I think like if you, I mean, you could have
[50:49] Speaker 3: waited and gotten like a, a, a Shuck Bryce young
[50:53] Speaker 3: team and just load it up everywhere else. And you're
[50:55] Speaker 3: probably sitting pretty good right now. Now it's certainly, it
[50:58] Speaker 3: takes a special type of person to do that. And I'm,
[51:00] Speaker 3: I know I'm definitely not one of them, but I
[51:02] Speaker 3: think that that's looking good right now. One of the
[51:04] Speaker 3: things that, that has always been an outlier to me
[51:06] Speaker 3: as far as another strategy goes is is how healthy
[51:09] Speaker 3: these running backs have stayed.
[51:11] Speaker 4: And JJ, I can't, I can't remember if it was
[51:12] Speaker 4: you who was talking about this.
[51:14] Speaker 3: This was like for a few months ago, we talk
[51:15] Speaker 3: about the receiver injuries that have happened, like the soft tissue,
[51:20] Speaker 3: the quads, the hamstrings or whatever. It seems like that's
[51:23] Speaker 3: more prevalent in receivers than we're seeing in running backs.
[51:25] Speaker 3: And I obviously know, Um, Barkley has gone down, um, and,
[51:29] Speaker 3: and we don't know what's going to happen with him. Um,
[51:31] Speaker 3: and HN had the freak ACL, but you look at
[51:34] Speaker 3: all these other guys that were drafted at the top
[51:36] Speaker 3: of the main event in FFPC Gibbs Robinson cook.
[51:39] Speaker 4: I got the list in front of me.
[51:40] Speaker 3: McCaffrey Taylor, Chase Brown, Kenneth Walker Hampton has, has, has underwhelmed,
[51:45] Speaker 3: but it hasn't been because of injury. Um, Derek Henry, I,
[51:48] Speaker 3: you know, all those guys at the top, those first
[51:51] Speaker 3: two rounds, you know, it looks like if you went with, uh,
[51:54] Speaker 3: running back running back to start off you're probably in
[51:56] Speaker 3: a good spot um you brought up and i think
[51:58] Speaker 3: this changed the way i i drafted a little bit
[52:00] Speaker 3: this year but like the death of the wide receiver
[52:03] Speaker 3: too where i put more of an emphasis on getting
[52:05] Speaker 3: these these target earners earlier in the draft and then
[52:09] Speaker 3: as a result you know normally that works you know
[52:11] Speaker 3: for for the zero rb crowd but now the zero
[52:15] Speaker 3: rb um running backs that you're getting in the ninth
[52:17] Speaker 3: and tenth round they get pushed up too I think
[52:20] Speaker 3: that's a combination of things.
[52:21] Speaker 4: I think it's better drafting.
[52:22] Speaker 3: It's more information out there and it's just more experienced
[52:26] Speaker 3: and so on and so forth. So it's been difficult
[52:28] Speaker 3: to pinpoint one. But if I had to pick one
[52:32] Speaker 3: at this point, I think late round quarterback has certainly
[52:34] Speaker 3: been working out for a lot of people so far.
[52:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been.
[52:37] Speaker 1: I mean, obviously, Josh Allen's smashing. He's doing his thing.
[52:40] Speaker 1: He's clearly... If you draft a Josh Allen, you're not sad.
[52:43] Speaker 2: That's for sure.
[52:44] Speaker 4: No. And I think the best part of his schedule
[52:46] Speaker 4: is coming up, too.
[52:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's crazy.
[52:48] Speaker 4: It's a big Allen blow-up.
[52:49] Speaker 1: What he's doing on the ground right now is one
[52:51] Speaker 1: of the most insane things I've ever seen in fantasy football.
[52:54] Speaker 2: It's crazy.
[52:54] Speaker 1: But with that being said, I think that, yeah, I mean,
[52:57] Speaker 1: there's been... you know we i did an episode on
[53:00] Speaker 1: the late round quarterback like back in july where i
[53:02] Speaker 1: thought it was a really good year for it and
[53:04] Speaker 1: a resurgence for it the funny thing is we're not
[53:06] Speaker 1: even seeing the mobile quarterbacks necessarily be the reason for
[53:10] Speaker 1: that because a lot of them been hurt you know
[53:11] Speaker 1: jayden daniels got hurt lamar jackson got hurt jackson dart's
[53:13] Speaker 1: been hurt uh jalen hurts now is has this blood
[53:16] Speaker 1: clot but he's been banged up a little bit slash
[53:18] Speaker 1: they haven't been that good so he hasn't drake may
[53:20] Speaker 1: hasn't played that well so it's been just this like
[53:24] Speaker 1: There's been a lot of good quarterbacks, like you said,
[53:26] Speaker 1: that have been usable. I think that we're in a
[53:28] Speaker 1: in a very real era of platooning, you know, like
[53:32] Speaker 1: of just a lot of people still have this old
[53:35] Speaker 1: school mentality. I say old school, but I really mean
[53:37] Speaker 1: between like 2014 to 2020, let's say. of only drafting
[53:43] Speaker 1: one quarter. This is less FFPC because it's obviously a
[53:45] Speaker 1: little bit deeper on FFPC. But in a typical league,
[53:49] Speaker 1: they're drafting one quarterback and they're not worrying about getting
[53:52] Speaker 1: a second quarterback. And I remember writing my draft guide
[53:55] Speaker 1: a couple years ago of like, if you just draft
[53:57] Speaker 1: two late round quarterbacks, right? Like two guys that are
[54:00] Speaker 1: late that you feel decent about, maybe one's more of
[54:02] Speaker 1: like a high ceiling, you know, mobile guy. One's just
[54:05] Speaker 1: like a Jared Goff type. You can platoon those guys.
[54:08] Speaker 1: Number one, you'll have a better hit rate than drafting
[54:11] Speaker 1: a middle round quarterback in general, just based on the
[54:13] Speaker 1: historical numbers.
[54:14] Speaker 2: So, cause you're drafting two of them.
[54:16] Speaker 1: But also you can play by matchup at the position
[54:18] Speaker 1: and you can absolutely, like I played, you know, Jordan, I've,
[54:21] Speaker 1: I've teams with Jordan love and Brock Purdy and, And
[54:23] Speaker 1: I just played Jordan Love last week over Purdy. Like
[54:26] Speaker 1: I had him ranked over him, gained, you know, nine
[54:28] Speaker 1: or 10 points or so by doing that.
[54:30] Speaker 2: And you can do that each week. And I think
[54:32] Speaker 2: that's the era that we're in more.
[54:36] Speaker 1: You know, obviously, if you're in a shallow league, you
[54:37] Speaker 1: can get away with only rostering one and using the
[54:40] Speaker 1: waiver wire and streaming and stuff.
[54:41] Speaker 2: Streaming is just more difficult these days.
[54:43] Speaker 1: It's just not as easy to do because the percent
[54:45] Speaker 1: roster number, I think leagues are shifting.
[54:48] Speaker 2: More and more to more of the platoon style and
[54:50] Speaker 2: rostering more than one quarterback.
[54:52] Speaker 3: Even in like the 12 team, 20 round drafts, which
[54:56] Speaker 3: are pretty deep. I was still as of like 2021
[54:59] Speaker 3: or whatever it was, 2020, I was still just drafting
[55:02] Speaker 3: one quarterback and then just, you know, but then I,
[55:05] Speaker 3: it was the year and I can't remember what year
[55:07] Speaker 3: it was, but Stafford got hurt and he was my
[55:10] Speaker 3: only quarterback in like five or six leagues. And I
[55:12] Speaker 3: was scrambling and there just was no quarterbacks there. on
[55:15] Speaker 3: the waiver wire and a take by teams that year.
[55:17] Speaker 3: So now I've made the point of like, you know, always,
[55:20] Speaker 3: even if I draft the quarterback early, I'm taking a
[55:22] Speaker 3: second one just so I'm not left in the lurch.
[55:24] Speaker 3: But then if you're going to employ that strategy, well,
[55:27] Speaker 3: why not pick up two and play matchups? Because if
[55:31] Speaker 3: you pick up two and play matchups with those guys,
[55:34] Speaker 3: chances are you can wait and stack up your other
[55:36] Speaker 3: positions and you're really not hurting anything about the opportunity
[55:39] Speaker 3: costs of drafting, you know, Jackson.
[55:41] Speaker 4: Or May or Burrow or Allen or any of these guys.
[55:44] Speaker 4: Maybe not Alan. He's an alien.
[55:46] Speaker 3: But yeah, but but getting two of these other guys
[55:49] Speaker 3: that you can play matchups with. I just I think
[55:51] Speaker 3: that's that's my preferred way to go. And certainly, you know,
[55:56] Speaker 3: you hit on a bunch of guys that have been
[55:57] Speaker 3: crushing it from the mid rounds and late rounds this
[55:59] Speaker 3: year at quarterback. And people are very happy if they
[56:02] Speaker 3: employed that strategy.
[56:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, I got to ask you a Packers question before
[56:07] Speaker 1: we sort of wrap all this up.
[56:08] Speaker 4: Everyone always does.
[56:09] Speaker 3: Everyone always does.
[56:11] Speaker 1: What's going on with this backfield? Are we going to
[56:13] Speaker 1: see someone emerge? And then I also, like, have you
[56:15] Speaker 1: heard anything? This is like a deep cut. And I
[56:17] Speaker 1: know that maybe this is completely irrelevant for most of
[56:20] Speaker 1: the audience, but I still want to get into it.
[56:23] Speaker 1: I've added Savion Williams in a couple of leagues to
[56:25] Speaker 1: just stash on IR, right?
[56:28] Speaker 2: Like, do you think there's a chance that he ends
[56:30] Speaker 2: up seeing some work?
[56:31] Speaker 1: Because Marshawn Lloyd right now is last in the NFL
[56:33] Speaker 1: in yards after contact per attempt.
[56:35] Speaker 2: I know that he had a decent outing last week.
[56:38] Speaker 1: He'll probably be fine against Dallas because it's Dallas, you know,
[56:40] Speaker 1: but like, like, is something going to happen to this backfield?
[56:43] Speaker 1: You know, it sounds like the Josh Jacobs thing is
[56:44] Speaker 1: going in the wrong direction from him getting in terms
[56:46] Speaker 1: of him getting on the field.
[56:48] Speaker 2: We don't have to dig into that.
[56:49] Speaker 1: But is there anything that we're going to see of
[56:52] Speaker 1: relevance from this backfield at some point?
[56:54] Speaker 3: Well, I think one of the things that was not
[56:56] Speaker 3: talked about early on, and now it is, is how
[57:00] Speaker 3: bad the Packers offensive line was. And Green Bay historically
[57:03] Speaker 3: does not make significant in-season changes outside of their roster.
[57:09] Speaker 3: You know, they might bench a guy, bring a guy
[57:11] Speaker 3: up from the practice squad, or maybe give a younger
[57:13] Speaker 3: guy a shot who's already on the active roster. Very
[57:16] Speaker 3: rarely do we see what happened after that Atlanta game.
[57:19] Speaker 3: where Brian Gutekunst went out and got Lake and Tomlinson
[57:22] Speaker 3: and Kevin Zeitler and, and Mackay Becton. Like that was,
[57:26] Speaker 3: that was a pretty significant thing for me to see that. So,
[57:29] Speaker 3: and what did they do with the running back position? Well,
[57:32] Speaker 3: not a whole lot. I mean, they're still giving, they
[57:34] Speaker 3: made the Caleb Johnson trade obviously before the season started,
[57:37] Speaker 3: but I think you can kind of see that, that
[57:39] Speaker 3: he may have run his course in Green Bay with
[57:42] Speaker 3: the action that Pierre Strong got this week over him.
[57:45] Speaker 3: I think Lloyd is who he is at this point.
[57:48] Speaker 3: This is basically his rookie year. I mean, he's had
[57:51] Speaker 3: these nasty injuries and appendectomy, throw that in there, the
[57:55] Speaker 3: last couple of years. So I still don't think we can...
[57:58] Speaker 3: I think this is like him being a rookie. I
[58:00] Speaker 3: think next year we could see a more complete, more
[58:04] Speaker 3: polished player. But as of right now, I don't really
[58:07] Speaker 3: think we're going to see anything more significantly from him.
[58:10] Speaker 3: And if we do, quite frankly, it's probably because the
[58:12] Speaker 3: improved play of the offensive line.
[58:13] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[58:14] Speaker 3: I don't envision anybody stepping up in this backfield.
[58:17] Speaker 2: I don't.
[58:18] Speaker 4: Certainly it's possible. Josh Jacobs comes back this season.
[58:21] Speaker 3: I don't think I think the NFL does not want
[58:23] Speaker 3: a repeat of the Ray Rice situation where they let
[58:27] Speaker 3: this guy come off the exempt list. And then in November,
[58:30] Speaker 3: we see this video and it's really bad, what have you.
[58:32] Speaker 3: Savion Williams is a guy who is on my taxi
[58:36] Speaker 3: squad still in two dynasty leagues, and I'm keeping him there.
[58:41] Speaker 4: We'll see what happens.
[58:42] Speaker 3: I think with players like this, and I don't know
[58:45] Speaker 3: why I'm doing it with Savion Williams because it's not
[58:47] Speaker 3: like I'm very bullish on him. I think he's a
[58:49] Speaker 3: fun player, and certainly when he was healthy last year,
[58:52] Speaker 3: they were using him on special teams.
[58:53] Speaker 4: They used him a little bit on offense.
[58:54] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
[58:55] Speaker 4: Um, Matt Waldman from.
[58:56] Speaker 3: Football guys, he said this one time and it's always
[58:58] Speaker 3: stuck with me when we talk about these gadget players.
[59:01] Speaker 4: Well, what happens to gadgets?
[59:02] Speaker 3: Sometimes they fall between the couch cushions and you they're
[59:05] Speaker 3: never found again right and and it's kind of true
[59:08] Speaker 3: with williams too like he just might be a gadget
[59:11] Speaker 3: guy that maybe sometimes they they focus in on him
[59:13] Speaker 3: and utilize him but you're never going to know when
[59:15] Speaker 3: that is and and quite frankly as long as i
[59:18] Speaker 3: can keep him on my taxi squad for free and
[59:20] Speaker 3: if you can keep him on your ir for free
[59:22] Speaker 3: right sure.
[59:23] Speaker 4: There's there's something to be.
[59:24] Speaker 3: Said for that But active roster, if I got to
[59:27] Speaker 3: put him in a 20-man roster right now, I'm looking
[59:30] Speaker 3: elsewhere because I don't really think the juice is worth
[59:32] Speaker 3: the squeeze.
[59:33] Speaker 1: I think that you're just hoping and crossing your fingers
[59:36] Speaker 1: that a Cordero Patterson outcome happens. And as we know,
[59:40] Speaker 1: that took like 40 years to happen. He was in
[59:43] Speaker 1: the league for a while before we finally saw. But yeah,
[59:46] Speaker 1: that's the comp, of course. I think it's just interesting.
[59:49] Speaker 1: Like it's, it's one of those things I want to
[59:50] Speaker 1: toss out there on a show so that like, if
[59:54] Speaker 1: you start to see it happen, you're like, Oh yeah,
[59:55] Speaker 1: that if there's one backfield where a random weird thing
[59:59] Speaker 1: could happen, it would probably be backfield.
[1:00:01] Speaker 4: Right.
[1:00:01] Speaker 2: Cause it's just so weak right now.
[1:00:03] Speaker 1: But I also don't think that the coaching staff is
[1:00:06] Speaker 1: one that would get super weird with it. You know,
[1:00:09] Speaker 1: that would like really embrace a Savion Williams as like a,
[1:00:13] Speaker 1: 10 to 12 touch player or something like that.
[1:00:15] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[1:00:16] Speaker 1: So that's, that's more of the downside case. He is
[1:00:18] Speaker 1: a really interesting prospect just from the standpoint of like
[1:00:21] Speaker 1: what he brought to the table as a, as a hybrid,
[1:00:24] Speaker 1: you know, I'm, I'm usually not much of a tweener
[1:00:26] Speaker 1: kind of guy. Like I'm not really into the, into
[1:00:28] Speaker 1: the running back wide receiver hybrid types, but, Um, but
[1:00:30] Speaker 1: when they're free and you can throw them on IR, sure.
[1:00:33] Speaker 2: You know, I'll do that all day.
[1:00:34] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[1:00:35] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[1:00:35] Speaker 3: I mean, I think that's what it comes down to
[1:00:37] Speaker 3: that right now. The cost benefit is definitely like you
[1:00:40] Speaker 3: should be doing it.
[1:00:41] Speaker 4: There's nothing. Yeah.
[1:00:42] Speaker 2: There's no reason.
[1:00:43] Speaker 4: Exactly.
[1:00:44] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[1:00:44] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[1:00:45] Speaker 3: All right.
[1:00:45] Speaker 2: Before I let you go, give me a bold prediction
[1:00:48] Speaker 2: for week six.
[1:00:50] Speaker 3: And this gets back to what we're talking about with
[1:00:55] Speaker 3: range of outcomes, right? Because I could be very bold
[1:00:58] Speaker 3: and people could call me an idiot and then this
[1:01:01] Speaker 3: could happen.
[1:01:02] Speaker 4: How about this?
[1:01:03] Speaker 3: Since I'm a Packers guy, season ticket holder, love my
[1:01:06] Speaker 3: green and gold. Sunday night football now um we won't
[1:01:10] Speaker 3: get Micah Parsons this was supposed to be the the
[1:01:12] Speaker 3: Micah Parsons revenge game and he's still not ready and
[1:01:15] Speaker 3: I don't know if he's coming back next week and
[1:01:17] Speaker 3: and I I think the latest I read on that
[1:01:19] Speaker 3: was that he is he wants to take a little
[1:01:21] Speaker 3: bit extra time to make sure that his body is
[1:01:23] Speaker 3: balanced and he's not overcompensating for it which is great
[1:01:27] Speaker 3: which makes sense let's go with this a bold prediction
[1:01:30] Speaker 3: Sunday night football Packers, Cowboys, both teams score in the 40s.
[1:01:36] Speaker 3: Jordan Love and Dak Prescott combine for eight touchdown passes, right?
[1:01:42] Speaker 3: Marshawn Lloyd scores three touchdowns this week. One through the air,
[1:01:47] Speaker 3: two on the ground. And we see CeeDee Lamb and
[1:01:53] Speaker 3: George Pickens both have 130-yard games. uh this year at
[1:01:58] Speaker 3: the same time first time we've seen it all season
[1:02:00] Speaker 3: um and i'll say golden this is maybe this isn't
[1:02:02] Speaker 3: even bold anymore but i'll say golden and watson combined
[1:02:05] Speaker 3: for four touchdowns as well so i'm very excited.
[1:02:07] Speaker 5: To see this game oh it should be a good
[1:02:09] Speaker 5: game the fireworks are going to be out this is
[1:02:12] Speaker 5: so and we have been like dude the sunday night
[1:02:15] Speaker 5: and the thursday night and the monday night games this
[1:02:17] Speaker 5: year have been just chef's kiss awesome You can't plan
[1:02:21] Speaker 5: it the way that it's been happening.
[1:02:23] Speaker 3: But I think that the Packers and Cowboys continue that.
[1:02:26] Speaker 3: I don't know who wins, but I know it will
[1:02:28] Speaker 3: be entertaining.
[1:02:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's awesome. Eric, this was great, man. I love
[1:02:31] Speaker 2: talking to you. Love having these conversations. And hopefully people
[1:02:34] Speaker 2: enjoyed it.
[1:02:34] Speaker 1: There was some stuff that we were going to get
[1:02:36] Speaker 1: to of certain specific players and stuff. But I think
[1:02:38] Speaker 1: that the process-oriented stuff, the psychological-related stuff and how our
[1:02:45] Speaker 1: brains work while we're managing our teams... It's really, really
[1:02:48] Speaker 1: important and something that's just not talked about enough. So
[1:02:50] Speaker 1: thank you for your time. Let everyone know where they
[1:02:52] Speaker 1: can find you and what you're doing.
[1:02:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, Eric Balkman on X. I do, during the season,

[1:03:27] Speaker 3: lot of fun. I have a tendency to ramble. Thank
[1:03:30] Speaker 3: you for being forgiving in that regard. But this was awesome, man.
[1:03:34] Speaker 3: I really appreciate it.
