[0:00] Speaker 1: Now here's a highlight from Coast to Coast AM on iHeartRadio.
[0:05] Speaker 2: Welcome back to Coast to Coast AM. I'm your host,
[0:07] Speaker 2: Rich Barra. Wendy Mata is a fifth generation Bruja Curandera,
[0:12] Speaker 2: initiated shaman and fire priestess. She is the founder of
[0:16] Speaker 2: Bruja Power Botanica and a dedicated guide on the path
[0:20] Speaker 2: to reclaiming one's inner power. Wendy shares the ancient wisdom
[0:24] Speaker 2: of Mexico wherever she goes through in-person meetings, in online
[0:28] Speaker 2: events for the first time ever. New guest here. Welcome, Wendy,
[0:32] Speaker 2: to Coast to Coast AM.
[0:34] Speaker 3: Hey.
[0:35] Speaker 4: Hello. Thank you for having me.
[0:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, I met you kind of via the telephone earlier
[0:41] Speaker 2: this week on my other radio show, John Jay and
[0:44] Speaker 2: Rich in the Morning. We had a pretty good time,
[0:46] Speaker 2: but we were really talking about family curses. And your
[0:50] Speaker 2: story is so interesting. I think maybe what we should
[0:53] Speaker 2: do before we start getting into generational curses and such
[0:58] Speaker 2: I want to hear about your sort of beginnings with
[1:01] Speaker 2: this because you were born into this life but didn't
[1:05] Speaker 2: really get into this life until a little bit later, right?
[1:10] Speaker 3: Yes.
[1:10] Speaker 4: I became a bruja full-time in 2021.
[1:13] Speaker 3: In 2021.
[1:13] Speaker 2: Oh, yes. So before– and you say bruja, right?
[1:19] Speaker 5: Yes, bruja curandera.
[1:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, boy, that's fun to say. That actually makes it
[1:23] Speaker 2: sound even cooler. So you're a fifth-generation– So growing up
[1:29] Speaker 2: in that world, what's it like for you as a
[1:31] Speaker 2: kid kind of being around this stuff?
[1:36] Speaker 5: So people often ask me this question, what is the
[1:39] Speaker 5: difference between your life and the life of others that
[1:42] Speaker 5: didn't grow up in magic?
[1:43] Speaker 4: And I don't know how life is without it.
[1:47] Speaker 5: I remember growing up going to witness family members doing limpias,
[1:51] Speaker 5: which is energy cleansings that we do in Mexico. I
[1:54] Speaker 5: remember family members healing with plants, with prayer, with dances,
[2:00] Speaker 5: with the rain, with earth and kind of living.
[2:04] Speaker 4: A little bit of a different life. We do believe
[2:06] Speaker 4: in science.
[2:07] Speaker 5: We do go to doctors, but first we tried all
[2:09] Speaker 5: the traditional methods before we get into, into the medical system.
[2:15] Speaker 5: And it was really interesting because I grew up talking
[2:17] Speaker 5: to the devs, seeing ghosts, seeing spirits and.
[2:20] Speaker 4: Um, realizing that not everybody had that life was quite
[2:25] Speaker 4: shocking to me.
[2:27] Speaker 2: You know, what's kind of interesting, too, is it's so
[2:29] Speaker 2: I come from, you know, an Italian Catholic family. And
[2:33] Speaker 2: I always say the Italians and the the Mexican culture
[2:36] Speaker 2: is a lot closer than you think, especially the family
[2:39] Speaker 2: dynamic of it. And, you know, what my my grandmother
[2:42] Speaker 2: and great grandmother, they would talk about ghosts all the time.
[2:46] Speaker 2: They would talk about spirits. They would talk about the eye,
[2:48] Speaker 2: the evil eye all the time. And that's prevalent in
[2:51] Speaker 2: Mexican culture, too. Why do you think it is still
[2:55] Speaker 2: so prevalent? And in America, it kind of gets a
[2:58] Speaker 2: little bit like, ah, that's not real.
[3:02] Speaker 5: One of those things that if you grew up with it,
[3:05] Speaker 5: that becomes part of your belief system. And when you
[3:08] Speaker 5: are growing up and then you kind of learn the
[3:10] Speaker 5: science of what mal de ojo, that's how we call
[3:12] Speaker 5: it in Mexico, what mal.
[3:13] Speaker 4: De ojo is.
[3:15] Speaker 5: You give it a representation in your life. If you
[3:19] Speaker 5: have a headache, you think it's mal de ojo. If
[3:21] Speaker 5: you're feeling ill, you think it's mal de ojo. If
[3:23] Speaker 5: you cannot sleep, you think it's mal de ojo. It's
[3:26] Speaker 5: almost like a reality includes mal de ojo. And we
[3:29] Speaker 5: first have to, I think it's similar to in the
[3:31] Speaker 5: Italian tradition, I believe, which we use eggs.
[3:34] Speaker 4: To cleanse our energy.
[3:36] Speaker 5: So we have to go through the process of Olympias
[3:39] Speaker 5: to remove the mal de.
[3:40] Speaker 4: Ojo from our body.
[3:41] Speaker 5: And for what I have witnessed in my life and
[3:45] Speaker 5: the life of other people, about 80% of the headaches
[3:49] Speaker 5: and 80% of the illness and 80% of the things
[3:52] Speaker 5: actually do go away when you do Olympia.
[3:55] Speaker 2: And, you know, I guess that's not true because, you know,
[3:57] Speaker 2: I have some family members that are from the South and,
[4:01] Speaker 2: you know, people there seem to have traditions too, where
[4:03] Speaker 2: it's like, Yeah, well, if you break a mirror, you
[4:05] Speaker 2: need to go bury it in a river somewhere. So
[4:08] Speaker 2: we all have our traditions, and I want to hear
[4:09] Speaker 2: about those tonight, too. As people get into it, the
[4:12] Speaker 2: things that maybe your grandmother taught you that you still do,
[4:14] Speaker 2: like what's the throw in the salt over your back
[4:18] Speaker 2: or over your shoulder? What is that one?
[4:21] Speaker 5: It's just to eliminate the possibility of throwing the salt
[4:25] Speaker 5: not in the shoulder to give you a curse.
[4:27] Speaker 2: You don't want to throw salt directly into your shoulder.
[4:30] Speaker 2: Is that the deal? That's bad?
[4:32] Speaker 5: Yes.
[4:33] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[4:33] Speaker 4: Or putting it in a margarita. That's your thing, too,
[4:35] Speaker 4: I guess.
[4:36] Speaker 2: So you spent a lot of time. How does somebody
[4:39] Speaker 2: who grows up and forgive my poverty of language here,
[4:42] Speaker 2: but let me say it like this. In a family
[4:44] Speaker 2: full of witches, how do you go from that into cybersecurity?
[4:48] Speaker 2: What's the path? Because that seems sort of not adjacent.
[4:54] Speaker 5: Well, a lot of witches and brujas have a really
[4:58] Speaker 5: strong impact in equipment and technology.
[5:02] Speaker 2: Oh, that makes sense.
[5:03] Speaker 4: Yeah, we touch a computer, we touch a light bulb,
[5:06] Speaker 4: we touch something, and it can either break or glitch.
[5:11] Speaker 4: So when I was a kid, my brother.
[5:12] Speaker 5: Used to call me manos de estomago, which is like
[5:16] Speaker 5: basically everything that you touch goes to, you know, the toilet.
[5:19] Speaker 3: Yes.
[5:21] Speaker 4: I was a little frustrated.
[5:22] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[5:22] Speaker 4: I was a little frustrated with that.
[5:24] Speaker 5: So I thought what I'm going to do is that
[5:26] Speaker 5: I'm going to be an engineer and I'm going to
[5:28] Speaker 5: learn how to fix.
[5:29] Speaker 4: The things that I break.
[5:30] Speaker 2: Okay.
[5:32] Speaker 4: So I ended in technology because of that.
[5:34] Speaker 2: For 25 years though, that wasn't just a, you know,
[5:37] Speaker 2: a step in a direction. You really, you really got
[5:40] Speaker 2: ensconced in that world. Is there, is there a similarity
[5:44] Speaker 2: between tracking down a cyber bug and, uh, cleansing a
[5:48] Speaker 2: cursed family? Is there some parallels?
[5:52] Speaker 1: Actually, yes.
[5:53] Speaker 5: I actually, it's very interesting because the type of job
[5:55] Speaker 5: that I have, people used to pay me to solve
[5:57] Speaker 5: problems that nobody else could figure out why. I actually
[5:59] Speaker 5: traveled the world fixing the problems that nobody else could
[6:03] Speaker 5: figure out why. And now that I am not in cybersecurity,
[6:06] Speaker 5: I can say it, but I used to just go.
[6:08] Speaker 4: Talk to the spirits in the buildings.
[6:11] Speaker 5: I used to talk to the spirits of the server's
[6:13] Speaker 5: I used to talk to the ancestors of the people
[6:15] Speaker 5: in the production line, and I used to ask them,
[6:18] Speaker 5: can you please point me into what is failing?
[6:21] Speaker 4: So I've always used my.
[6:23] Speaker 5: Ability to talk to spirits and talk to the dead
[6:25] Speaker 5: for many different things.
[6:26] Speaker 4: It also did in technology.
[6:29] Speaker 5: So the difference really, I think everything is energy, right?
[6:33] Speaker 5: So there's not a lot of difference. And yes, there's
[6:35] Speaker 5: a lot of abstract concepts in technology that they're not
[6:39] Speaker 5: necessarily spiritual.
[6:40] Speaker 4: But when you combine.
[6:42] Speaker 5: Both, you become, I guess, I don't know what the
[6:47] Speaker 5: word is, but you have different capacities and abilities that
[6:50] Speaker 5: other people don't have.
[6:52] Speaker 6: And I know you're going to want some after hearing this.
[6:53] Speaker 6: This is an amazing story. We've got Stephen and Malachi
[6:56] Speaker 6: Gregory in Nelson, New Zealand. I understand that Malachi, who's eight,
[7:01] Speaker 6: almost nine years old now, was suffering with not just
[7:05] Speaker 6: one or two warts, but I mean a significant outbreak
[7:08] Speaker 6: of warts all over his body. So significant it impacted
[7:10] Speaker 6: his ability to to really function.
[7:13] Speaker 3: Yeah, he was having trouble even holding a pencil to write.
[7:16] Speaker 3: It was Ty's book actually that got me thinking about it.
[7:19] Speaker 1: I'm not surprised. It is an amazing immunomodulator. And so
[7:23] Speaker 1: I can see that it would work.
[7:25] Speaker 6: And so at what point did you see that there
[7:27] Speaker 6: was actually improvement is really going to work?
[7:30] Speaker 3: Well, look, we really started to notice it around 12 weeks.
[7:33] Speaker 3: You can see these things actually getting smaller and smaller
[7:37] Speaker 3: and then going down to the where they're just little
[7:39] Speaker 3: red marks, the whole things are gone. And we're talking
[7:41] Speaker 3: about one the size of a walnut. I thought, no
[7:44] Speaker 3: way that's going to. Wow. It's just been miraculous to
[7:47] Speaker 3: see him get into a pair of shoes.
[7:49] Speaker 1: Yes. How wonderful.
[7:51] Speaker 3: It's great to see him so.
[7:52] Speaker 1: Happy and confident.
[7:54] Speaker 6: Absolutely wonderful.
[7:55] Speaker 3: Our friends that have seen it, they're just blown away.
[7:57] Speaker 2: Ty, this is awesome.
[7:59] Speaker 1: Yeah, this is awesome. Another amazing story.
[8:01] Speaker 5: Why?
[8:01] Speaker 2: We're talking about Carnivora.
[8:03] Speaker 5: Call them to awaken your immune system and protect yourself now.
[8:06] Speaker 4: Call 1-866-836-8735.
[8:07] Speaker 1: That's 1-866-836-8735.
[8:07] Speaker 2: Or visit Carnivora.com.
[8:08] Speaker 1: C-A-R-N-I-V-O-R-A.
[8:09] Speaker 2: Carnivora.com. That's pretty interesting to me. So from a person
[8:25] Speaker 2: who's been schooled in engineering and gone through, this is
[8:29] Speaker 2: the way IT works and the system works, you can
[8:32] Speaker 2: tell me definitively that there is energy from the other side.
[8:37] Speaker 2: There are curses. There are things that go bump in
[8:41] Speaker 2: the night that maybe you can't explain. But you're saying,
[8:44] Speaker 2: even from an engineering standpoint for 25 years, that is 100% real.
[8:51] Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely.
[8:52] Speaker 2: So take me to the moment for you when something
[9:00] Speaker 2: that your family believed maybe hit you as, oh, this
[9:05] Speaker 2: is real. I know you grew up with it, but
[9:07] Speaker 2: something that had the impact on you that, oh, okay,
[9:11] Speaker 2: the veil is thin.
[9:12] Speaker 5: When I was a kid, I used to have an
[9:17] Speaker 5: imaginary friend. I don't know. I don't believe it was
[9:19] Speaker 5: an imaginary friend. It was actually a ghost that lived
[9:22] Speaker 5: in my house.
[9:22] Speaker 4: Her name was Leti.
[9:23] Speaker 5: And this probably was between the age of five and nine.
[9:27] Speaker 5: And I remember my sister kind of like joking a
[9:31] Speaker 5: little bit with me and saying, if she's actually real,
[9:35] Speaker 5: you need to ask her to turn on and turn
[9:39] Speaker 5: off the light.
[9:41] Speaker 4: So I did.
[9:42] Speaker 5: And we had had conversations about ghosts in our family
[9:46] Speaker 5: or entire life.
[9:48] Speaker 4: And I believe in them.
[9:49] Speaker 5: But it wasn't until that day that I talked to Leti,
[9:52] Speaker 5: the ghost that was living in my mom's house, that
[9:55] Speaker 5: she turned off the light of the living room when
[9:58] Speaker 5: I asked her to turn off the light.
[10:00] Speaker 4: That I believed.
[10:02] Speaker 5: And it was actually a running joke in my family
[10:04] Speaker 5: that if we needed to turn on and turn off
[10:06] Speaker 5: the light of.
[10:07] Speaker 4: The living room, she will do it.
[10:09] Speaker 5: So I grew up with a ghost that was very friendly,
[10:12] Speaker 5: that will turn on and turn off the light.
[10:14] Speaker 2: That's handy.
[10:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, right, right. And we didn't have remote controls back then, right?
[10:20] Speaker 1: Right.
[10:20] Speaker 4: Could you do that? Yeah, she will also change the channels.
[10:24] Speaker 1: Yes.
[10:26] Speaker 2: And she wasn't getting part-time money? That sounds like a
[10:28] Speaker 2: personal assistant.
[10:31] Speaker 1: Right?
[10:31] Speaker 4: I should probably go back to my mom's house and
[10:33] Speaker 4: live her some candy.
[10:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, no kidding.
[10:34] Speaker 4: And she's still there.
[10:36] Speaker 2: If you could get her to unload the dishwasher, then
[10:37] Speaker 2: I'd be impressed.
[10:39] Speaker 4: Wouldn't that be amazing?
[10:40] Speaker 2: Wouldn't that? So when you talk about things like a possession,
[10:46] Speaker 2: which I know you've seen a lot of, what do
[10:49] Speaker 2: those look like from your perspective? How is that different
[10:52] Speaker 2: than what we see in The Exorcist and the movies
[10:54] Speaker 2: and all that?
[10:58] Speaker 5: I cannot say that what we see in movies is
[11:00] Speaker 5: not real because movies are based many times on on
[11:05] Speaker 5: the human experience, right? I haven't had the opportunity to
[11:08] Speaker 5: see that. I don't know if I want to see it,
[11:10] Speaker 5: but the type of possessions and spirits that I have
[11:13] Speaker 5: seen in people are very different. I've seen people changing completely,
[11:17] Speaker 5: like being not themselves anymore. I have seen humans who
[11:23] Speaker 5: become shells.
[11:23] Speaker 4: So a shell is somebody that their soul leaves their
[11:26] Speaker 4: body and then a spirit enters their body.
[11:28] Speaker 2: Now that's scary. That's really scary.
[11:30] Speaker 5: Right.
[11:31] Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely. And so you're... Your whole face looks different now,
[11:34] Speaker 2: not to get off on a tangent here, but I
[11:38] Speaker 2: feel like we've seen celebrities that have happened to that.
[11:42] Speaker 2: You're like, oh, they need medication or maybe they're on drugs.
[11:45] Speaker 2: Like to me, they look totally different, even like their
[11:47] Speaker 2: teeth look different. That to me seems like something way
[11:50] Speaker 2: deeper than just using drugs is happening.
[11:54] Speaker 5: Yes, and actually, like, drugs can be a gateway to
[11:57] Speaker 5: somebody leaving their body because they're checking out so much
[12:01] Speaker 5: from the reality that in this checkout, something can come and.
[12:04] Speaker 4: Inhabit their bodies, and then they never leave.
[12:07] Speaker 5: So you see this complete change in their bodies, in
[12:10] Speaker 5: their eyes, in their teeth, in their presence, in their voice,
[12:12] Speaker 5: in their behaviors, because they are somebody different.
[12:16] Speaker 2: When you say bruja, how do you say the second word? Curendera. Curandera,
[12:25] Speaker 2: what does that mean in English? Translate that for me.
[12:29] Speaker 4: The translation will be witch and healer.
[12:32] Speaker 2: Okay. And that is the name of your book, by
[12:34] Speaker 2: the way. And I'm interested in this book for a
[12:37] Speaker 2: lot of reasons. But the first thing that hit me
[12:40] Speaker 2: were the colors that you chose for the book. Tell
[12:43] Speaker 2: me about that.
[12:45] Speaker 5: When I was working with a publisher on the cover,
[12:48] Speaker 5: I was asking them to choose something that will represent Mexico.
[12:53] Speaker 5: And that will represent the day of the dead. So
[12:57] Speaker 5: some of the flowers on the book are the representation
[13:00] Speaker 5: of the Sempasuchu. And then there is also monarch butterflies
[13:04] Speaker 5: on the cover. And then the last thing that is
[13:06] Speaker 5: very interesting on the book, that it was done on purpose,
[13:10] Speaker 5: is that in the front, there is something that looks
[13:12] Speaker 5: like a cup, which is actually called a saumador.
[13:16] Speaker 2: It looks like a chalice, though. It looks like something
[13:19] Speaker 2: you would see in church.
[13:21] Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
[13:21] Speaker 5: So what you do is that you put charcoal inside
[13:24] Speaker 5: of this chalice and then.
[13:25] Speaker 4: You put copal, which is a resin that we use
[13:28] Speaker 4: for spiritual cleansing.
[13:30] Speaker 5: So the purpose of having this salmador or chalice in
[13:34] Speaker 5: the front of the book is that it helps cleanse
[13:37] Speaker 5: the path of the people that has it.
[13:39] Speaker 2: And we should tell everybody right now that are listening
[13:42] Speaker 2: that it's linked up at Coast to Coast AM. So
[13:45] Speaker 2: I think it's fascinating. I think you're fascinating. And during
[13:49] Speaker 2: the course of the night, Will you tell us, maybe
[13:53] Speaker 2: if we don't have a bruja available to us, some
[13:57] Speaker 2: things we can do if we feel like maybe we're
[13:58] Speaker 2: being followed around by bad luck or a spirit or
[14:02] Speaker 2: some kind of not great energy? Are there things you
[14:05] Speaker 2: can do without a licensed practitioner bruja that you can
[14:10] Speaker 2: do to kind of clear your house, clear the path?
[14:13] Speaker 2: Are there some things, practices that you can do on
[14:15] Speaker 2: your own?
[14:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, anybody can do it.
[14:18] Speaker 5: Anybody has the ability to cleanse their energy, heal their energy,
[14:22] Speaker 5: and align themselves to spirit. You don't have to be
[14:25] Speaker 5: a bruja or a curandera to do it. So I
[14:28] Speaker 5: can tell you, practice this now or later, whenever you want.
[14:31] Speaker 2: In Practical Magic, that movie, Practical Magic 2, is out
[14:34] Speaker 2: right now. It follows the story of a family. Anybody
[14:37] Speaker 2: falls in love with these, they're cursed. It's a generational curse.
[14:41] Speaker 2: And anybody that they fall in love with will die.
[14:44] Speaker 2: And in this case, those curses are generational. Can curses
[14:48] Speaker 2: be generational? Yes, they can. They can? They follow? That's
[14:54] Speaker 2: no fair. Like, we have nothing to do.
[14:56] Speaker 7: There's actually a study of epigenetics, right, which traces the
[15:04] Speaker 7: DNA of our ancestors and their sicknesses and how they
[15:08] Speaker 7: follow us.
[15:09] Speaker 5: So it's very similar, but in this case, it's the
[15:11] Speaker 5: spiritual and the emotional. But sometimes we are the ones
[15:15] Speaker 5: that are meant to break the curses. Sometimes a lot
[15:18] Speaker 5: of people that are going through a lot of things
[15:19] Speaker 5: in life usually is because they are the ones that
[15:22] Speaker 5: are meant to change the history of their families.
[15:25] Speaker 2: Okay, so you may have been born to break the curse.
[15:29] Speaker 4: Yes.
[15:30] Speaker 2: Okay, because it's not enough that I don't have to
[15:32] Speaker 2: deal with my grandparents like, you know, glaucoma and high
[15:34] Speaker 2: blood pressure. I got to inherit that too.
[15:38] Speaker 1: Right.
[15:38] Speaker 2: That's not enough. That's wild. Have you ever had, have
[15:43] Speaker 2: you ever started a cleanse or any kind of practice
[15:48] Speaker 2: and thought, oh, this one's a lot, that it was more, okay,
[15:53] Speaker 2: can you tell me about that?
[15:55] Speaker 5: So there is a lot of betrayal that runs in
[15:58] Speaker 5: my family line. Pretty much every single woman in my
[16:01] Speaker 5: family has been cheated by someone, or they have had
[16:05] Speaker 5: relationships that our friendships or partnerships that have been very complicated.
[16:11] Speaker 5: So when something really funky happened to me in 2014,
[16:14] Speaker 5: I started to make a list of all the women
[16:16] Speaker 5: in my family that had gone through it because I
[16:19] Speaker 5: decided that it.
[16:20] Speaker 4: Ended with me.
[16:21] Speaker 5: I have a daughter and I don't want my daughter
[16:23] Speaker 5: to go through the same stuff. So I did what
[16:29] Speaker 5: we call a timeline cleansing, right?
[16:31] Speaker 4: I went through the entire timeline, mine and my ancestors,
[16:33] Speaker 4: to try to figure out where that originated. And then
[16:36] Speaker 4: I talk to the spirits of each of my ancestors,
[16:40] Speaker 4: asking them for their permission to release the wound. So
[16:43] Speaker 4: that from me, now on, everybody that has a relationship
[16:47] Speaker 4: has a healthy relationship. And it was a really powerful experience,
[16:50] Speaker 4: but I also was receiving so much information from my
[16:53] Speaker 4: ancestors about the pain that they were carrying. And it
[16:56] Speaker 4: wasn't just my mom and my.
[16:58] Speaker 5: Grandmother, but it was my great-grandmother, my great-great-grandmother, and aunts
[17:01] Speaker 5: and cousins, and pretty much all the women in my family.
[17:05] Speaker 4: So we weren't able to... Go ahead.
[17:07] Speaker 2: How do you know, though? How do you know that
[17:10] Speaker 2: the spirit you're talking to is your grandmother? Because I
[17:13] Speaker 2: I would imagine if you're a nefarious spirit from the
[17:16] Speaker 2: other side, I might just be lying to you and
[17:17] Speaker 2: saying that I'm your grandmother just to get access to you.
[17:21] Speaker 2: Does that happen?
[17:22] Speaker 4: Oh, yes. The trickster spirits. I can't say that in English.
[17:26] Speaker 2: Trickster.
[17:27] Speaker 4: Yeah, the trickster spirits.
[17:29] Speaker 2: We'll help each other tonight. You'll help me with the Spanish.
[17:31] Speaker 2: I'll help you with the English. Thank you so much.
[17:35] Speaker 5: Yeah. So the trickster spirits will definitely come and do
[17:37] Speaker 5: that and pretend that they are somebody else. But One
[17:40] Speaker 5: of my recommendations to people when they're living a spiritual
[17:43] Speaker 5: practice that is non-conventional, to put it in a way,
[17:46] Speaker 5: it's that you have to create a relationship with your spirit.
[17:50] Speaker 5: So you get to know them to the point that
[17:53] Speaker 5: when they come and talk to you, you know that
[17:55] Speaker 5: they are them.
