[0:00] Speaker 1: Tesla unveils a ROBOTAXI how your smart TV is spying
[0:06] Speaker 1: on you? Why you're getting so many unsolicited job offer texts?
[0:11] Speaker 1: Plus your tech questions? Answer ered What's going on? I'm
[0:14] Speaker 1: Rich Dmiro and this is Rich on Tech. This is
[0:18] Speaker 1: the show where I talk about the tech stuff I
[0:19] Speaker 1: think you should know about. It's also the place where
[0:21] Speaker 1: I answer your questions about technology. I believe the tech
[0:25] Speaker 1: should be interesting, useful and fun. Let's open up those
[0:29] Speaker 1: phone lines at triple eight rich one oh one. That's
[0:33] Speaker 1: eight eight eight seven four to two four one zero one.
[0:37] Speaker 1: Give me a call. If you have a question about technology.
[0:39] Speaker 1: Email is also an option, and you like it, just
[0:43] Speaker 1: go to rich on tech dot tv and hit contact.
[0:47] Speaker 1: It is so wild. When this show airs throughout the weekend,
[0:51] Speaker 1: obviously it's live and then it replays in different places.
[0:55] Speaker 1: The emails just come pouring in, and I love reading them.
[0:58] Speaker 1: I can't get to every single one of them. I
[1:00] Speaker 1: do mention a lot on the show. I do answer
[1:02] Speaker 1: some of my newsletter. But if you get that response
[1:05] Speaker 1: from me, you know it, and I do appreciate you
[1:07] Speaker 1: emailing me. All right, Guests, this week, we've got tech
[1:11] Speaker 1: journalists Christian Delooper. He's gonna explore the pros and cons
[1:15] Speaker 1: of those art style TVs like Samsung's the frame and
[1:19] Speaker 1: high senses canvas TV. You know they show artwork when
[1:22] Speaker 1: you're not using it. And we've got former PR pro
[1:25] Speaker 1: Scott Baldwin. He's got a new app. He has a
[1:28] Speaker 1: startup and the app is called front Pack. It's a
[1:32] Speaker 1: social network for athletes. So we'll talk to him. Plus
[1:36] Speaker 1: I've got a special guest. Stay tuned for that.
[1:40] Speaker 2: Well.
[1:40] Speaker 1: I am coming to you from my home state of
[1:43] Speaker 1: New Jersey today, so that's why the music you'll hear
[1:46] Speaker 1: throughout the show is all Jersey inspired. Always fun to
[1:51] Speaker 1: come home. I am actually here for a celebration for
[1:53] Speaker 1: my dad and it's a nice one. Ten years cancer free,
[1:58] Speaker 1: which I cannot believe. I still remember the day I
[2:01] Speaker 1: was actually at the doctor with him when he got
[2:03] Speaker 1: the initial diagnosis and it just, you know, puts your
[2:07] Speaker 1: world into a tailspin, just everything, and so my you know,
[2:12] Speaker 1: I live far away, so I said, you know what,
[2:14] Speaker 1: I will help. Couldn't bring him to the hospital all
[2:16] Speaker 1: that stuff, but I will help get his tech life
[2:19] Speaker 1: in order. So immediately I said, let's go through your stuff.
[2:22] Speaker 1: Let's get everything kind of figured out so I can
[2:24] Speaker 1: help you pay the bills and all these different things.
[2:26] Speaker 1: And the first thing I learned is that his digital
[2:30] Speaker 1: life was such a mess, as are so many of ours.
[2:35] Speaker 1: I like to think mine is not, but you know,
[2:37] Speaker 1: there are portions of it that are. But I had
[2:40] Speaker 1: to go through his passwords and access to everything, you know,
[2:42] Speaker 1: get online, access to banking and things like that. And
[2:46] Speaker 1: it just took a lot because it's like, Dad, do
[2:49] Speaker 1: you know your password to this? No? Dad, do you
[2:51] Speaker 1: know how you access this?
[2:53] Speaker 3: No?
[2:54] Speaker 1: And so I got a lot of things in order,
[2:56] Speaker 1: but it took a while. A couple of things to
[2:59] Speaker 1: think about. Number One, when you're thinking about, you know,
[3:03] Speaker 1: your access for other folks. Apple has a legacy access option,
[3:08] Speaker 1: So set that up someone that you can hand over
[3:10] Speaker 1: your account to in the event that you can't, you know,
[3:14] Speaker 1: manage it any longer you pass away. Google has an
[3:17] Speaker 1: inactive account manager as well. They will email you can
[3:20] Speaker 1: set someone as a sort of a beneficiary of those
[3:23] Speaker 1: two accounts. Those are the two big ones. But do
[3:25] Speaker 1: that and also maybe share your passwords of some of
[3:28] Speaker 1: the important stuff with folks. Obviously, my dad's livelihood was
[3:32] Speaker 1: impacted during this time when he was recovering. He is
[3:35] Speaker 1: a roofer by trade, so he couldn't go up on roofs,
[3:38] Speaker 1: although he probably did during some of this time, and
[3:41] Speaker 1: so I set up a GoFundMe for him. That was
[3:43] Speaker 1: incredible just to see how many friends, family, and even
[3:46] Speaker 1: complete strangers wanted to help. If you did that many
[3:50] Speaker 1: many years ago, thank you for that. Always set up
[3:53] Speaker 1: a GoFundMe if someone is going through something in your life,
[3:56] Speaker 1: because there are many people that are just waiting to help.
[3:59] Speaker 1: And with social media and all these avenues, it's a
[4:02] Speaker 1: great way to do that and to raise some funds
[4:04] Speaker 1: for folks who can't work or need some help. And
[4:07] Speaker 1: it's been a long journey, lots of doctors, lots of hospitals,
[4:11] Speaker 1: lots of sickness, lots of blood. Blood actually helped save
[4:15] Speaker 1: both my mom's life and my dad's life. They would
[4:18] Speaker 1: not be here today if it was not for blood donation.
[4:21] Speaker 1: So please donate blood. Personally, I am too scared to
[4:24] Speaker 1: do that. I know I'm trying to work through it,
[4:27] Speaker 1: but that is something that I do appreciate when other
[4:30] Speaker 1: people do it. I think it's incredible. My dad really strong.
[4:36] Speaker 1: He's a health nut, always has been, and so he
[4:39] Speaker 1: did end up getting through his cancer. He got a
[4:41] Speaker 1: stem cell transplant, which, again incredible technology. He had to
[4:45] Speaker 1: start life over. It was not easy and it was
[4:48] Speaker 1: a very long journey. Again, it's been ten years. But
[4:51] Speaker 1: modern technology, including includes medical advances. We often forget. We
[4:56] Speaker 1: think about technology as computers and gadgets and things, but
[5:00] Speaker 1: medicine is also quite incredible these days, and there are
[5:04] Speaker 1: very smart people figuring this stuff out and continuing to
[5:07] Speaker 1: make strides. But one thing has not changed. My dad
[5:10] Speaker 1: is healthy now.
[5:11] Speaker 4: He is.
[5:11] Speaker 1: You know, it's you never fully recover from something like this,
[5:14] Speaker 1: but you know, the cancer is gone and he is
[5:18] Speaker 1: an incredible person and we're going to celebrate him for
[5:20] Speaker 1: that today. And one thing has not changed, though, I
[5:24] Speaker 1: will tell you his passwords are still a mess, so
[5:28] Speaker 1: that has not changed. While I was here in New Jersey,
[5:31] Speaker 1: I did visit a real life electronics store. It's called Microcenter.
[5:35] Speaker 1: My mom and I were going somewhere else and I said,
[5:37] Speaker 1: I got to stop in that place. I mean I
[5:38] Speaker 1: got to stop in because it's just you know, we
[5:40] Speaker 1: don't have these, And so I did go there and
[5:44] Speaker 1: I just thought it was so neat because over the
[5:47] Speaker 1: years we've seen this sort of evolution of you know,
[5:51] Speaker 1: the the idea of the electronics store. Nowadays it's all
[5:54] Speaker 1: Amazon overnight, right, But through my years growing up, I
[5:57] Speaker 1: mean I remember going going to Egghead Software, if you
[6:00] Speaker 1: remember a place called Egghead Software. But that was like
[6:02] Speaker 1: as a nerd growing up, it was just so cool.
[6:05] Speaker 1: You'd walk in and all the software was in boxes,
[6:08] Speaker 1: and you had discs and floppy drives and you would
[6:11] Speaker 1: come home and put in like one disc after another
[6:13] Speaker 1: to install programs. Now we just download them on our
[6:16] Speaker 1: phone instantly. There's a place called Crazy Eddies, which I
[6:19] Speaker 1: know got a lot of notoriety over the years because
[6:22] Speaker 1: I think the guy ended up getting in trouble with
[6:23] Speaker 1: the government for like embezzling money. But that was a
[6:26] Speaker 1: great place where our prices are insane. I mean, these
[6:29] Speaker 1: larger than life, you know characters on TV that would
[6:33] Speaker 1: be promoting electronics. How wild is that? And then of
[6:36] Speaker 1: course I lived close to New York City, so there
[6:37] Speaker 1: were always these electronics stores, like independent electronics stores in
[6:40] Speaker 1: New York City. And what you do is you'd buy
[6:43] Speaker 1: the newspaper. They would all list their prices in the
[6:46] Speaker 1: back and tiny print, and you'd go into one store
[6:48] Speaker 1: and you say, hey, this other store has this thing,
[6:50] Speaker 1: this VCR for you know, nine ninety eight. You've got
[6:53] Speaker 1: it for nine to ninety nine. Can we get that?
[6:55] Speaker 1: You know, this this price that they have. Maybe it
[6:58] Speaker 1: wasn't that little of a difference, but you know what
[7:00] Speaker 1: I mean. And so you know, then you had the
[7:02] Speaker 1: regional retailer, so PC, Richards, the Whiz sixth have electronics.
[7:06] Speaker 1: These were all on the East Coast. I'm sure where
[7:09] Speaker 1: you are it could be different, but this is where
[7:11] Speaker 1: I grew up, and there was just so many of them,
[7:13] Speaker 1: and I love just going into these stores and walking around.
[7:17] Speaker 1: And over the years, of course, growing up, my dad
[7:20] Speaker 1: would buy stereos in our first camquarder, our first big
[7:23] Speaker 1: screen TV, our first fax machine, computers and printers, and
[7:27] Speaker 1: I will tell you my dad would attest to this
[7:29] Speaker 1: that almost every single thing that he purchased, whether it
[7:32] Speaker 1: was for a small business or for the house, somehow
[7:34] Speaker 1: ended up in my room at the house. Like the
[7:36] Speaker 1: fax machine. He bought it for his business, but somehow
[7:39] Speaker 1: it ended up in my room. Like what did they
[7:41] Speaker 1: sixth grader need with a fax machine. I don't know,
[7:44] Speaker 1: i'd know in a fax, but it was just so cool.
[7:46] Speaker 1: And then of course later peripherals, sound cards, speakers, graphic cards.
[7:51] Speaker 1: It just went on and on. My love for electronics
[7:54] Speaker 1: ran very deep, even as a kid, and the stores
[7:57] Speaker 1: go on and on. Radio Shack that was next to
[7:59] Speaker 1: like one of the grocery stores my mom would always
[8:01] Speaker 1: go to, and of course I had to duck into
[8:03] Speaker 1: Radio Shack and convince my mom to let me go
[8:05] Speaker 1: in there and just check it out. And I didn't
[8:07] Speaker 1: necessarily have enough money to buy anything. But part of
[8:10] Speaker 1: the fun of going into these stores were the smart
[8:13] Speaker 1: people that were inside these stores. So because you were
[8:16] Speaker 1: a nerd, you would find like minded people and just
[8:20] Speaker 1: chat about nerdy things, and a lot of times you
[8:22] Speaker 1: were comparing knowledge, right, oh what about this new you know,
[8:25] Speaker 1: microprocess or this new computer. Oh I tried that. So
[8:28] Speaker 1: that was just part of it. Nowadays, of course, that's
[8:30] Speaker 1: all online, it's all in forms, it's all in chats.
[8:33] Speaker 1: But back in the day, it was like real human
[8:35] Speaker 1: to human interaction at these places, and you knew where
[8:38] Speaker 1: to find these people. And then of course it was
[8:40] Speaker 1: the bigger, bigger stores comp USA Circuit City and Best Buy.
[8:44] Speaker 1: They just continued to get bigger fries electronics when I
[8:47] Speaker 1: made my way to California, but again, local retailers ruled
[8:51] Speaker 1: electronics for a long time until these mega chains stepped in.
[8:55] Speaker 1: Back in the day, even office Depot had an excellent
[8:58] Speaker 1: department that I had never worked in. It was called
[9:01] Speaker 1: business Machines. I actually worked it off as depots selling
[9:04] Speaker 1: cell phones back in the day when they were ninety
[9:07] Speaker 1: nine cents you would, or were they a penny? Whatever
[9:09] Speaker 1: they were, they were like ninety nine cents or a penny,
[9:12] Speaker 1: and every time, without fail, people would buy the phone
[9:14] Speaker 1: and they'd come in like thirty days later when their
[9:17] Speaker 1: first bill came in the mail and their bill was
[9:19] Speaker 1: so expensive because it included the first month, the last month,
[9:22] Speaker 1: the pro rated amount, and I was like, well, the
[9:24] Speaker 1: phone was only ninety nine cents. I mean, you have
[9:26] Speaker 1: to pay for this somehow, right, And we had to
[9:28] Speaker 1: work through that. Half the times, the flip phones that
[9:31] Speaker 1: we sold for a dollar would be returned because people
[9:33] Speaker 1: were so angry at the giant bill they got for.
[9:36] Speaker 1: And back then it was like, you know, a couple
[9:37] Speaker 1: hundred bucks for their first bill, and by the way
[9:40] Speaker 1: in that department business machines. These salespeople again were nerds,
[9:44] Speaker 1: and they were fun and like that's why I just
[9:46] Speaker 1: sit there and chat with about all the latest electronics.
[9:49] Speaker 1: And they were commissioned, so if you were a good salesperson,
[9:52] Speaker 1: you can make a lot of money back in the day. Now,
[9:55] Speaker 1: of course, a lot of these retailers like Best Buy
[9:57] Speaker 1: have moved away from that sort of commission I pressure sales,
[10:01] Speaker 1: but it was quite interesting for a long time, and
[10:03] Speaker 1: now it's all about online reviews, Amazon getting your stuff overnight.
[10:07] Speaker 1: Cost Go still a big place where people buy electronics.
[10:11] Speaker 1: But I'm curious, are there any local electronics stores left
[10:14] Speaker 1: in your area? I mean, I travel a lot, and
[10:17] Speaker 1: of course I will always go into a place if
[10:19] Speaker 1: I see one, But I was so happy to see
[10:21] Speaker 1: micro Center. It's just such a such a great place
[10:24] Speaker 1: to see, like thriving, and I just made my mom
[10:26] Speaker 1: walk around all we walk down every single aisle and
[10:29] Speaker 1: just had such a great time. So if you want
[10:31] Speaker 1: to hop on the phone lines or email me, I
[10:34] Speaker 1: will mention later in the show or throughout the show
[10:37] Speaker 1: some of these places that you visited growing up and
[10:41] Speaker 1: just enjoying electronics because If you're listening to the show,
[10:44] Speaker 1: you probably have somewhat of a small love of gadgets
[10:47] Speaker 1: like I did and still do. All right, coming up,
[10:49] Speaker 1: we're gonna talk Tesla Cybercab, new announcement from Tesla with
[10:53] Speaker 1: their self driving car. But first we're gonna take some
[10:57] Speaker 1: of your calls. Your calls up next A triple eight
[10:59] Speaker 1: rich one, you know one that's eight eight eight seven
[11:01] Speaker 1: four to two four one zero one. Give me a
[11:03] Speaker 1: call if you have a question about technology. My name
[11:05] Speaker 1: is Rich Dmuro. This is rich on Tech. Welcome back
[11:10] Speaker 1: to rich on Tech. Rich DeMuro here hanging out with
[11:13] Speaker 1: you talking technology at triple A rich one oh one.
[11:18] Speaker 1: That's eight eight eight seven four to two four one
[11:22] Speaker 1: zero one, Coming to you from New Jersey today. The
[11:25] Speaker 1: website for the show is rich on Tech dot TV.
[11:30] Speaker 1: While you're there, sign up for my newsletter. Got a

[11:40] Speaker 1: And if you want to send me an email here
[11:42] Speaker 1: just go to the website as well. Rich on Tech
[11:44] Speaker 1: dot TV. Hit contact. You know, when I took on
[11:47] Speaker 1: a Saturday live radio show, I did not I kind
[11:51] Speaker 1: of forgot about how much I travel on the weekends
[11:54] Speaker 1: to different places, both for personal and for job, most
[11:58] Speaker 1: of the time in the studio. But you know, I
[12:00] Speaker 1: didn't want to let this show stop me from being
[12:03] Speaker 1: places that I needed to be, Like this weekend, let's
[12:06] Speaker 1: go to let's see here, Let's go to line too,
[12:10] Speaker 1: Tony in the England Empire. Tony, let's get you on
[12:14] Speaker 1: with Rich.
[12:14] Speaker 5: What's up, Hi, Rich, thank you for taking my call.
[12:20] Speaker 5: I wanted to know.
[12:21] Speaker 6: I have.
[12:23] Speaker 5: Air pods and it's the Model A zero three one.
[12:27] Speaker 5: I guess it's the second Gin, okay, but it shut
[12:31] Speaker 5: down after only possibly maybe one hour of youth and
[12:35] Speaker 5: my battery I'm checking and it's still like eighty percent
[12:39] Speaker 5: or more. So I'm, I guess in the market of
[12:44] Speaker 5: purchasing a replacement, and I noticed that the fourth GIN
[12:49] Speaker 5: is out right now. So I need your help on
[12:52] Speaker 5: what shall I buy because I'm quite satisfied with what
[12:54] Speaker 5: I have. It's just that it doesn't work.
[12:58] Speaker 1: So the AirPods that you have, what's the problem. The
[13:01] Speaker 1: battery is not lasting right.
[13:04] Speaker 5: Another battery still showing. I'll put it back in the case.
[13:09] Speaker 5: I'm in the middle of of a phone call or something.
[13:11] Speaker 5: I'm using it, and I'll get that little sound word
[13:13] Speaker 5: shutting down it or whatever it makes, and it'll just
[13:17] Speaker 5: totally go out, and I have to put it back
[13:20] Speaker 5: in the case. And then I'll always check to see
[13:22] Speaker 5: what the percentage I have left, and at that time
[13:25] Speaker 5: it's always seventy or eighty percent left on the I
[13:30] Speaker 5: guess the battery line usage or whatever. But it shuts down.
[13:36] Speaker 1: Okay, well that's odd. So first thing I would do
[13:39] Speaker 1: is reset these to factory like reset. Have you done that?
[13:44] Speaker 4: No?
[13:45] Speaker 1: Okay, So you put the AirPods in their case, you
[13:48] Speaker 1: close the lid, you wait about thirty seconds, you open
[13:51] Speaker 1: the lid, and then you press and hold that little
[13:53] Speaker 1: button on the back of the case for about fifteen
[13:55] Speaker 1: seconds until the light will flash amber and then white.
[14:00] Speaker 1: And this is off the AirPod support guide online and
[14:03] Speaker 1: that will get them back to factory settings. So that
[14:05] Speaker 1: will clear everything off of them and make sure that
[14:08] Speaker 1: they are factory fresh once again, and then you will
[14:11] Speaker 1: repair them to your phone and see if the problem persists. Now,
[14:15] Speaker 1: if the problem persists, I would also do a little
[14:18] Speaker 1: clean out. I would get a little alcohol, a little
[14:21] Speaker 1: rubbing alcohol or an alcohol wipe, make sure it's not
[14:24] Speaker 1: super wet. Just you know, maybe put some alcohol on
[14:26] Speaker 1: a Q tip and I would clean the I would
[14:30] Speaker 1: clean the all basically everything inside the case and the
[14:33] Speaker 1: contacts on the air pods themselves, and then I would
[14:36] Speaker 1: charge them up, pair them back to your phone, and
[14:38] Speaker 1: see if the problem is still happening. If the problems
[14:40] Speaker 1: still happening, then I would probably get a new pair
[14:44] Speaker 1: of AirPods. I would see if these are under warranty.
[14:47] Speaker 1: You said they're the second generation. I don't think they're
[14:50] Speaker 1: under warranty at this point, and so I would probably
[14:53] Speaker 1: get a new pair at that point. The new ones
[14:55] Speaker 1: are let's see here. The new ones are one hundred
[14:59] Speaker 1: and twenty nine dollars for the air pods four. I
[15:03] Speaker 1: will tell you I've been testing them with active noise cancelation.
[15:06] Speaker 1: I don't think it's worth the active noise cancelation. I
[15:08] Speaker 1: don't think it's very good. So did you need the
[15:11] Speaker 1: noise cancelation or no?
[15:13] Speaker 5: No. I normally just wear one anyway, because if I'm
[15:17] Speaker 5: out walking or doing something, I normally just wear one
[15:20] Speaker 5: so that I can be more aware of my surrounding.
[15:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, And so is it only one that's messing
[15:27] Speaker 1: up on these air pods.
[15:30] Speaker 5: Well, I only really use the one, and that's the
[15:32] Speaker 5: one that keeps going out. The other one, I don't.
[15:35] Speaker 1: Know, Okay, got it? Okay, So I'm wondering if I mean, yeah, okay, interesting. Well,
[15:41] Speaker 1: I mean you could switch the other ear, and it'll
[15:43] Speaker 1: take a little bit for your brain to get used
[15:44] Speaker 1: to it, because, believe me, I always put mine in
[15:46] Speaker 1: the same ear when i'm doing just one, and then
[15:48] Speaker 1: it's like if I have it in the other one,
[15:49] Speaker 1: I'm like, wait, I can't do this, but you can.
[15:51] Speaker 1: You know, if you want to squeeze another couple of
[15:53] Speaker 1: years of life out of these, you can just put
[15:55] Speaker 1: it in the other ear and use that one. But
[15:57] Speaker 1: I think maybe a new pair, if you know, go
[16:00] Speaker 1: through the steps that I mentioned. I'll put the links
[16:02] Speaker 1: on the website. Rich on tech dot tv. This is
[16:05] Speaker 1: the show notes. This is show number ninety three, So
[16:08] Speaker 1: I'll put that in the show notes, and hopefully if
[16:11] Speaker 1: you go through all those systems and see if it's
[16:15] Speaker 1: still giving you a problem, then maybe it's time for
[16:17] Speaker 1: a new pair. But I will tell you you're not alone
[16:19] Speaker 1: these Tony. These For some reason, the AirPods just have
[16:23] Speaker 1: this weird thing where like sometimes they just show like
[16:25] Speaker 1: one percent one of them charges, one of them doesn't.
[16:28] Speaker 1: And so I've seen this happen before with mine. Most
[16:31] Speaker 1: of the time it's sort of a contact thing or
[16:33] Speaker 1: like just a quirk. And there have been some software
[16:36] Speaker 1: updates for the AirPods as well, so I'll put the
[16:38] Speaker 1: link on the website. You can't really force a software
[16:41] Speaker 1: update with the AirPods, but perhaps you need a software update,
[16:44] Speaker 1: and I'll put the instructions on how to see if
[16:46] Speaker 1: it needs a software update. You can check like what
[16:49] Speaker 1: the software that's running is and compare it against what's available.
[16:52] Speaker 1: So hopefully that helps Tony.
[16:54] Speaker 5: Okay, so you're saying that, let's just say I go
[16:57] Speaker 5: through all those steps and it's still doing the same thing. Now,
[17:00] Speaker 5: if I were to buy a replacement, you recommending which
[17:04] Speaker 5: one I.
[17:06] Speaker 1: Would go at the AirPods for those are the new ones,
[17:08] Speaker 1: brand new they just came out. AirPods four one hundred
[17:11] Speaker 1: and twenty nine bucks. Or you can go for a
[17:14] Speaker 1: replacement AirPod if you just want to replace what you got,
[17:16] Speaker 1: it's gonna be sixty nine dollars. You're listening to Rich
[17:19] Speaker 1: on Tech. Welcome back to rich On Tech eight eight
[17:22] Speaker 1: eight Rick one one eight eight eight rich one O
[17:26] Speaker 1: one seven four to two four to one zero one
[17:31] Speaker 1: seem to have hit a nerve with the classic electronics stores.
[17:35] Speaker 1: Lots of you emailing me to tell me that Microcenter
[17:38] Speaker 1: is also in the La area in Tustin. Yes, I
[17:43] Speaker 1: knew that I should have mentioned that. I know they
[17:45] Speaker 1: have more than one location. I just have not been
[17:48] Speaker 1: to the Tustin location, and this one's a lot closer.
[17:51] Speaker 1: So yes, I am well aware of that. They're actually
[17:54] Speaker 1: building a new one in northern California and Santa Clara,
[17:57] Speaker 1: California as well, So they are still expanding and we'll
[18:01] Speaker 1: talk more about them later. Dave writes in from Temecula
[18:05] Speaker 1: many years ago. Daytel in San Diego was the place
[18:08] Speaker 1: to go. They sold the brand new IBM PC and
[18:11] Speaker 1: also their own brand as a kit. I got the
[18:13] Speaker 1: kit assembled. I got the kit and assembled it myself,
[18:16] Speaker 1: A whopping one hundred and twenty eight k of memory,
[18:18] Speaker 1: twenty megabyte hard drive, and a amber monochrome monitor. And
[18:22] Speaker 1: it cost over three thousand dollars, quite a lot in
[18:25] Speaker 1: those days. And go Dosco three thousand dollars is still
[18:29] Speaker 1: a lot. I remember so two computers. I begged three computers.
[18:33] Speaker 1: I begged my dad to buy me my first. We
[18:34] Speaker 1: were just in PC Richard and we just did it
[18:37] Speaker 1: on a whim and we bought this computers like a
[18:39] Speaker 1: computer in a box, and it was a three eighty
[18:41] Speaker 1: six SX sixteen. And then my second computer was a
[18:46] Speaker 1: Gateway two thousand and I don't know if you remember this,
[18:48] Speaker 1: but I mean I sure did. I could not wait
[18:52] Speaker 1: for PC World to get delivered to my house because
[18:55] Speaker 1: in the center of that magazine was the Gateway two
[18:57] Speaker 1: thousand AD and it was headweight in all his like
[19:02] Speaker 1: I don't know, cowboy gear with the cows everywhere the spots,
[19:06] Speaker 1: and I would just flip through this ad and just
[19:08] Speaker 1: I mean that sold me on that brand so heavily
[19:11] Speaker 1: compared to like a Dell, I guess, or maybe that
[19:14] Speaker 1: came later, I don't know, but but Gateway was the
[19:17] Speaker 1: brand for me. And then of course I ordered the
[19:19] Speaker 1: computer and I got it in, you know, in the box.
[19:22] Speaker 1: And then later on I got this was a brand
[19:25] Speaker 1: I'm not even sure it's around anymore. It's called win Book.
[19:27] Speaker 1: And that was my first computer for college and it
[19:30] Speaker 1: was a laptop and it was so expensive. I think
[19:32] Speaker 1: it was like thirty five dollars and it was I mean,
[19:35] Speaker 1: nothing was a beast. It was so slow by today's standards,
[19:39] Speaker 1: didn't even have Wi Fi built in. But anyway, I digress.
[19:43] Speaker 1: Keep those emails coming. Rich on tech dot TV hit
[19:46] Speaker 1: contact if you want to send in your electronics store
[19:50] Speaker 1: that you visited throughout the years. Let's go to line one.
[19:53] Speaker 1: We've got Susan in Santa Monica, California. Susan, right, welcome
[19:58] Speaker 1: to the show.
[20:00] Speaker 7: Thank you.
[20:00] Speaker 3: I love you from day one. You've been wonderful. What
[20:03] Speaker 3: a gift for all of us, your information personality. Thank
[20:07] Speaker 3: you so much.
[20:08] Speaker 1: Thank you. Is this my mom? I'm just kissing.
[20:11] Speaker 3: Yeah, we were worried about losing Leo, but you're just
[20:14] Speaker 3: such a blessing. You're fantastic anyway, and I really miss
[20:19] Speaker 3: Circuit City. I love Circuit City. So here's my question.
[20:22] Speaker 3: I have two questions. One is probably quick regarding turning
[20:26] Speaker 3: my modem my router on and off at night. That's
[20:31] Speaker 3: the quick question. The main question I have it's a
[20:34] Speaker 3: landline bundle with Frontiers, so my internet is I guess
[20:38] Speaker 3: you call it broadband. I don't know, so I just
[20:42] Speaker 3: have plain old fashioned landline bundle phone and internet. I
[20:46] Speaker 3: have a router. I guess it's a combo router modem,
[20:50] Speaker 3: and it's been working just fine. Every now and then
[20:53] Speaker 3: I need to reboot it. No problem, it's pretty old.
[20:58] Speaker 3: Can I give you the name and model and you
[21:00] Speaker 3: tell me if I should be replacing this?
[21:03] Speaker 1: Well? So here, okay, to answer your first question, you
[21:07] Speaker 1: don't need to turn this off at night. These things
[21:10] Speaker 1: are meant. It's okay. I don't think it's gonna harm it,
[21:15] Speaker 1: but I don't think it's a good idea. I mean,
[21:17] Speaker 1: unless it's for a health reason or you don't you know,
[21:19] Speaker 1: you're just you don't like the idea of it being
[21:21] Speaker 1: on or whatever.
[21:22] Speaker 3: But like ty, I do what I'm worried about? WiFi
[21:24] Speaker 3: near my bed?
[21:26] Speaker 1: Okay, I mean, yeah, it's funny. It's funny. I had
[21:30] Speaker 1: a friend had the you know, back when like Wi
[21:33] Speaker 1: fi was first starting. They would just pop the router
[21:35] Speaker 1: like wherever they could, wherever the cable came in. I
[21:37] Speaker 1: remember someone had it under their bed and I was like,
[21:40] Speaker 1: you're just like cooking all night long, aren't you like
[21:42] Speaker 1: this WiFi? Is just radiating up into your body. Now,
[21:45] Speaker 1: I don't know if that's, you know, a problem or not,
[21:47] Speaker 1: but obviously the information on that is very mixed. It
[21:51] Speaker 1: seems to be very safe. We've had it for many,
[21:53] Speaker 1: many years in many people's homes throughout the world. So
[21:56] Speaker 1: I would say, personally, if you're concerned with that, I
[22:00] Speaker 1: would maybe move the router to a different place that
[22:03] Speaker 1: you feel better with. But I don't think that's an issue,
[22:05] Speaker 1: and I don't think it's a reason to turn it
[22:07] Speaker 1: off at night. So if that's the main reason I would,
[22:10] Speaker 1: I would not do that.
[22:12] Speaker 3: It's pretty old.
[22:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, So what I would do is you have to
[22:16] Speaker 1: call is it still Frontier or is it a different
[22:18] Speaker 1: company now?
[22:18] Speaker 3: Frontier?
[22:20] Speaker 1: Okay, so you have to call them and see. Because
[22:22] Speaker 1: here's the thing. The technology on these things has not
[22:25] Speaker 1: changed substantially. There are different there are different standards for
[22:31] Speaker 1: these modems, which is uh DOXIS d O c SI
[22:36] Speaker 1: S and so if your modem does not support the
[22:39] Speaker 1: latest DOXIS standard for your cable company, your speed could
[22:44] Speaker 1: be impacted. I think the standard like this, the typical
[22:47] Speaker 1: one today is like, let's see third generation so three
[22:51] Speaker 1: three uh, yeah, I think it's about the third generation.
[22:55] Speaker 1: So I would call your cable company or look on
[22:58] Speaker 1: there and see if it says anything about that, if
[23:00] Speaker 1: it's like two or something previous. But otherwise, I mean,
[23:03] Speaker 1: you could have these these modems for a very long time. Now.
[23:06] Speaker 1: I have had mine for ten years, and I will
[23:08] Speaker 1: tell you I did get a notice from my cable
[23:10] Speaker 1: company and they said it's time to upgrade and we
[23:12] Speaker 1: have to swap it out. And so it does happen.
[23:16] Speaker 1: It's you know, but it's not over a year or two.
[23:19] Speaker 1: This is a standard technology that's been around for a
[23:21] Speaker 1: long time. But I would get in touch with with Frontier.
[23:24] Speaker 1: Do you rent it or have you purchased it from them?
[23:27] Speaker 3: Well, I don't pay anything. They gave it to me
[23:29] Speaker 3: many years ago. It's part of it. Okay, this is
[23:32] Speaker 3: part of the package. Okay, I mean I don't trust them.
[23:35] Speaker 3: They might send a new one out and then start
[23:36] Speaker 3: charging me.
[23:37] Speaker 1: Twelve bucks a month, right, And I was just going
[23:40] Speaker 1: to say, that's my concern is that you may be
[23:41] Speaker 1: on a grandfather plan where they didn't charge. But but again,
[23:45] Speaker 1: you can you can call them. They're not going to
[23:47] Speaker 1: do anything without you authorizing it. So I would just
[23:49] Speaker 1: call them up and say, hey, here's my model router number.
[23:52] Speaker 3: Every one might be.
[23:54] Speaker 1: Okay, oh yeah, absolutely, I think. I mean, especially if
[23:58] Speaker 1: you're getting the speed that you're paying for, like I
[24:00] Speaker 1: would do a speed test on your computer connected to
[24:03] Speaker 1: your modem, and if you're paying for five hundred down
[24:05] Speaker 1: five hundred up, and you're getting that on a wired connection,
[24:09] Speaker 1: going to a website like speed test dot net orfast
[24:11] Speaker 1: dot com. If you're getting the speed you're paying for
[24:14] Speaker 1: on a wired connection, wireless might be a little bit slower,
[24:17] Speaker 1: but if you're getting that with a Ethernet cable plugged
[24:20] Speaker 1: into your laptop, then your modem's working just fine. So
[24:22] Speaker 1: there's no real reason to change that. And yeah, yeah exactly,
[24:26] Speaker 1: So thank you so much. All right, thanks so much
[24:29] Speaker 1: for the call there. Susan and Santa Monica do appreciate it,
[24:32] Speaker 1: and of course I always appreciate the kind words. It
[24:34] Speaker 1: really means a lot to me. This week in Los Angeles,
[24:38] Speaker 1: Tesla unveiled the cyber Cab. So this was an event
[24:43] Speaker 1: at Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles. No, I'm not
[24:47] Speaker 1: bitter because I wasn't invited, but we'll just get through
[24:50] Speaker 1: this anyway, twenty Cybercab prototypes at this we Robot event.
[24:56] Speaker 1: The Cybercab is a two seater vehicle with doors that
[25:01] Speaker 1: go up. I guess they're not Falcon doors. I guess
[25:04] Speaker 1: they call them goal wing doors. But there's no wheel,
[25:07] Speaker 1: there is no pedals. This is a vehicle that just
[25:10] Speaker 1: is self driving. Now you can buy one of these,
[25:13] Speaker 1: and that's what's unique about this setup is that Elon
[25:16] Speaker 1: Musk is promoting this as something that you would buy
[25:19] Speaker 1: for less than thirty thousand, by the way, that's their
[25:21] Speaker 1: target price, and it would drive you around. But here's
[25:25] Speaker 1: the kicker. When you are not using it, it can
[25:28] Speaker 1: be sent out into the world to act as an
[25:31] Speaker 1: automated uber on your behalf. So your car would be
[25:34] Speaker 1: picking up other people, driving them around, dropping them off,
[25:39] Speaker 1: and then you'd be earning cash on this. How wild
[25:42] Speaker 1: is that? So they're almost creating like a secondary market
[25:45] Speaker 1: they want to start production twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven.
[25:48] Speaker 1: These cars have wireless charging, not plug in chargers. They
[25:53] Speaker 1: also had a Robovan that was capable of carrying up
[25:56] Speaker 1: to twenty people that was more like a bus. They
[25:59] Speaker 1: also had these Optimist humanoid robots on display, they were
[26:02] Speaker 1: making drinks, they were talking to people. Elon Musk believes
[26:06] Speaker 1: these will be huge, like a Rosie the robot for
[26:08] Speaker 1: your house price tag of about twenty thousand dollars to
[26:11] Speaker 1: thirty thousand dollars. These were a little bit iffy because
[26:15] Speaker 1: it was clear that they had humans not only doing
[26:18] Speaker 1: the voice and the interactions with people, but also controlling them.
[26:21] Speaker 1: But they were standing, it seemed, on their own and
[26:23] Speaker 1: walking around, which was pretty cool. So they've come a
[26:26] Speaker 1: long way. Obviously, this is all a very big dream
[26:31] Speaker 1: right now. We don't know if any of this will
[26:33] Speaker 1: happen for real. They've got lots of hurdles ahead, including
[26:37] Speaker 1: people accepting cars driving around by themselves without people in
[26:41] Speaker 1: them or without a human driver. I know Weaimo does this,
[26:44] Speaker 1: but there's a lot of talk about the fact that
[26:46] Speaker 1: Weimo does this very differently. Weimo cars are already driving
[26:50] Speaker 1: around by themselves in Los Angeles, but they use a
[26:52] Speaker 1: completely different tech stack, including radar, ldar cameras. They have
[26:58] Speaker 1: so many sensors on those cars that these cars that
[27:01] Speaker 1: Elon Musk is promoting do not have. Elon Musk typically
[27:06] Speaker 1: the Tesla has used cameras to self drive, and we're
[27:10] Speaker 1: still waiting for that dream of full self driving on
[27:12] Speaker 1: the current Tesla's the Model three, the Model Why. He
[27:15] Speaker 1: believes that in California and Texas there will be unsupervised
[27:19] Speaker 1: full self driving in the next two years or so.
[27:23] Speaker 1: So again, this is someone who promises a lot, and
[27:27] Speaker 1: I love the fact that Elon Musk. There's no doubt
[27:29] Speaker 1: about it. He has delivered many, many things. But again
[27:32] Speaker 1: we have to hold a little bit of we have
[27:36] Speaker 1: to be a little bit critical of this stuff and
[27:38] Speaker 1: a little bit skeptical as well, because this is going
[27:41] Speaker 1: to take longer than probably many of us think. Again,
[27:45] Speaker 1: don't forget this was done on a closed set on
[27:48] Speaker 1: the Warner Brothers lot rather than in a real world situation,
[27:52] Speaker 1: so everything was highly controlled, although people were getting rides
[27:55] Speaker 1: in these cyber cabs around the back lot. So it's cool,
[27:58] Speaker 1: There's no doubt about it. It's very cool. But again,
[28:02] Speaker 1: I can't wait to see this stuff happen. I think
[28:05] Speaker 1: it's there's a many many people out there who do
[28:07] Speaker 1: not want this stuff to happen, or who do not
[28:10] Speaker 1: want to get into a car like this. But I
[28:12] Speaker 1: know many people who have taken the way mos that
[28:14] Speaker 1: including myself. That felt very comfortable. Now eighty eight rich
[28:18] Speaker 1: one one eight eight eight seven four to two four
[28:21] Speaker 1: one zero one. You are listening to rich on Tech.
[28:25] Speaker 1: Welcome back to rich on Tech. Rich DeMuro here hanging
[28:28] Speaker 1: out with you talking technology at triple eight rich one
[28:32] Speaker 1: O one that's eight eight eight seven four to two
[28:35] Speaker 1: four one zero one. Got an email from uh let's
[28:41] Speaker 1: see Diane in Menefee asking are we able to FaceTime
[28:46] Speaker 1: with one Apple and one Android phone? And the answer
[28:49] Speaker 1: is yes, but it's complicated and I don't recommend it.
[28:53] Speaker 1: So there are many many ways to do a video
[28:55] Speaker 1: call that does not involve FaceTime. You know, if you've
[28:58] Speaker 1: listened to the show for any length of time that
[29:01] Speaker 1: I always always prefer third party, platform independent products, so
[29:09] Speaker 1: platform products that work on every platform, not just one. Now,
[29:13] Speaker 1: if you are an Apple person, it's amazing. Everything works great,
[29:18] Speaker 1: but you are beholden to pretty much everything Apple. In fact,
[29:22] Speaker 1: one of the best note taking apps out there is
[29:25] Speaker 1: Apple Notes, which I would love to use, but I
[29:28] Speaker 1: can't because I test a lot of phones. Maybe I
[29:32] Speaker 1: want to switch to an Android phone at some point,
[29:34] Speaker 1: and I would have to switch my entire notes to
[29:37] Speaker 1: some other program because of that, and it just goes
[29:39] Speaker 1: on and on. If you use Apple Photos to store
[29:42] Speaker 1: your photos, Apple Music doesn't work on both. I will
[29:46] Speaker 1: give them that, but it's pretty much reminders, I mean,
[29:49] Speaker 1: anything that you do in the Apple ecosystem. It's pretty
[29:52] Speaker 1: much just glue to keep you on the Apple side
[29:55] Speaker 1: of things. You get an air tag, you're not going
[29:57] Speaker 1: to switch to Android. They don't work with Android. Again,
[30:00] Speaker 1: always prefer things that work on every platform, not just one.
[30:04] Speaker 1: So when it comes to FaceTime, yes, it's simple, Yes
[30:07] Speaker 1: it's easy, but if you're trying to use it with
[30:10] Speaker 1: an Android, it's not that easy. You can do it,
[30:12] Speaker 1: and here's how you do it. So first off, you
[30:15] Speaker 1: have to go to a you have to start the
[30:19] Speaker 1: call from an iPhone, and so you get the call
[30:22] Speaker 1: on an iPhone, you get it going, and there's a
[30:24] Speaker 1: link on the iPhone that you can generate when you're
[30:27] Speaker 1: in the call, and so you can generate that link
[30:31] Speaker 1: and send it to someone that is on another device
[30:36] Speaker 1: like a Windows computer or an Android phone, and then
[30:39] Speaker 1: once they get that link, they can open up that
[30:43] Speaker 1: link and get on the call. So basically, if you
[30:47] Speaker 1: are on FaceTime. You can open up the app and
[30:49] Speaker 1: there's a create link near the top of the screen,
[30:51] Speaker 1: and then you just send that link to someone and look,
[30:54] Speaker 1: I mean, yes, it works, but like, why not use
[30:57] Speaker 1: a program that just works with everything? Right? I mean,
[30:59] Speaker 1: what's app does great video calls? Telegram does video calls,
[31:04] Speaker 1: Facebook Messenger does video calls. I think even Instagram does
[31:08] Speaker 1: video calls. At this point, I mean, can't you just
[31:10] Speaker 1: use something that you know that just works with everything.
[31:14] Speaker 1: So that's my recommendation. But yes, if you have an iPhone,
[31:16] Speaker 1: you got an Android friend and you want to FaceTime them,
[31:18] Speaker 1: that's what you do. You start the FaceTime, create a link,
[31:21] Speaker 1: and then send that link to the other person. Let's
[31:25] Speaker 1: take a call here. Let's go to let's see here,
[31:30] Speaker 1: let's go to Mark in Woodland Hills. Mark. You're on
[31:33] Speaker 1: with Rich?
[31:35] Speaker 4: Yeah, Hi, Rich. I you know I've been listening as
[31:38] Speaker 4: I've been waiting on hold here, and I do have
[31:40] Speaker 4: a question about help for seniors with tech things like
[31:46] Speaker 4: like one Generation here in the San Franco Valley used
[31:48] Speaker 4: to have college students come in and help seniors work
[31:52] Speaker 4: out their problems with their laptops and their cell phones
[31:55] Speaker 4: and such. But I did want to run one thing
[31:57] Speaker 4: by you. I know it's not happy talk. I couldn't
[32:01] Speaker 4: be I do not share your fondness for the test list.
[32:06] Speaker 8: Uh.
[32:06] Speaker 4: You know, they contain like a dozen toxic chemicals in
[32:10] Speaker 4: the batteries alone. If you have an accident and you
[32:13] Speaker 4: catch on fire, you explode. But the main thing that
[32:16] Speaker 4: really bothers me about that is like cobalt, for instance,
[32:20] Speaker 4: is mind in the Republic of Congo by children. It's
[32:26] Speaker 4: a toxic chemical and you know they need food.
[32:28] Speaker 1: You know. Look, I've heard a lot about this. I've
[32:31] Speaker 1: heard I've I've heard a lot of complaints about this
[32:34] Speaker 1: sort of thing, Mark, And you know, here's the deal.
[32:37] Speaker 1: We're not going to stop progress from happening. I understand that, yes,
[32:40] Speaker 1: this stuff is dirty at the beginning, but as I
[32:44] Speaker 1: understand it, the more batteries that we make, the more
[32:47] Speaker 1: recycled they are in the future. So yes, it's uh.
[32:51] Speaker 1: And you know, if you're comparing it against oil, like
[32:54] Speaker 1: I mean, and look, and here's the thing, like, I
[32:57] Speaker 1: am all for Lectri cars one hundred percent. I'm not
[32:59] Speaker 1: one of those people who's gonna sit here and say
[33:01] Speaker 1: let's not progress and let's just default to you know,
[33:05] Speaker 1: let's just default to oil for the rest of our lives.
[33:07] Speaker 1: That's not gonna that's not possible. And I understand there's
[33:11] Speaker 1: a drawback to everything. There is not a thing in
[33:14] Speaker 1: this world that there is not a side effect or
[33:18] Speaker 1: a drawback to, no matter what you're talking about. I mean,
[33:22] Speaker 1: I don't care if you tell me you eat bananas
[33:24] Speaker 1: and they're perfect for you. There's a downside to eating
[33:27] Speaker 1: too many bananas, you know. So we have to understand
[33:30] Speaker 1: that this stuff is. There's a pro and a con
[33:33] Speaker 1: to everything, and we are progressing. And I get it.
[33:37] Speaker 1: If you don't want an electric car, don't get it.
[33:40] Speaker 1: That's the best thing. And nobody's forcing you to do that.
[33:42] Speaker 1: I understand. Yes, we've got you know, some states in
[33:45] Speaker 1: some places, and there's been some plans for the future
[33:47] Speaker 1: of transitioning to these cars, but nobody's forcing anyone to
[33:52] Speaker 1: do it just yet. Personally, I think the electric car
[33:56] Speaker 1: is the best thing that I've ever yet mute. Okay,
[34:01] Speaker 1: I mean personally, I think the yes, mark.
[34:06] Speaker 4: Yes, sir. It's unsustainable. We don't have the electricity to provide.
[34:10] Speaker 4: We have brownouts here in California as it is, because
[34:13] Speaker 4: the environmental is even the leadership of the environmental.
[34:16] Speaker 1: Almost the last time we had a brown out.
[34:17] Speaker 9: Clear i c.
[34:18] Speaker 4: Nuclear is the cleanest power there is. We don't have
[34:23] Speaker 4: the electrical internet and our network yet.
[34:26] Speaker 1: Go and look here's the thing. Of course, we don't have.
[34:30] Speaker 1: It's unsustainable right now because we're still building the infrastructure
[34:34] Speaker 1: and we're still learning how to, you know, make solar
[34:36] Speaker 1: that's better and come up with renewable energy. So look, again,
[34:40] Speaker 1: it doesn't if you don't want it to happen, that's
[34:43] Speaker 1: that's you. But it's going to happen, and we're making
[34:47] Speaker 1: this transition, and we have to make this transition. There
[34:50] Speaker 1: is no way that we have an amount of oil
[34:53] Speaker 1: or gas that can last infinite amounts of time, and
[34:56] Speaker 1: so we have to find these renewable sources of energy
[34:59] Speaker 1: that we can use and use safely and create alternative
[35:03] Speaker 1: methods of getting around. And again, my electric car is
[35:06] Speaker 1: the best thing I've ever purchased. It is the most
[35:08] Speaker 1: incredible piece of technology I have ever used. Are their
[35:12] Speaker 1: drawbacks to it? Of course? Does it take a little
[35:15] Speaker 1: bit longer to get to places? Do I have to
[35:16] Speaker 1: think about it on road trips? Is there a charger
[35:19] Speaker 1: every single place I ever want. No, I didn't rent
[35:22] Speaker 1: a car this trip, an electric car, by the way.
[35:25] Speaker 1: They were half the price of the gas cars because
[35:27] Speaker 1: nobody's renting them. But I didn't rent one myself because
[35:30] Speaker 1: I knew I'm not I'm not trying to find a
[35:32] Speaker 1: charger on my you know, a couple of days out here,
[35:35] Speaker 1: and so I get it. Mark, I totally understand, and
[35:37] Speaker 1: I get it. But thanks for the call. Appreciate it.
[35:40] Speaker 1: Eighty to eight rich one O one eight eight eight
[35:43] Speaker 1: seven four two four one zero one. Welcome back to
[35:46] Speaker 1: rich on Tech. Rich Demiro here hanging out with you
[35:49] Speaker 1: talking technology. The website for the show rich on Tech
[35:53] Speaker 1: dot TV. The phone number for the show eighty eight
[35:58] Speaker 1: rich one O one eight eight eight eight seven four
[36:01] Speaker 1: to two, four to one zero one. Was talking about
[36:06] Speaker 1: old school electronics stores and pat rode in from Monrovia.
[36:11] Speaker 1: I bought my first PC at Creative Computers in Lawndale,
[36:15] Speaker 1: an Amiga five hundred with five hundred and twelve K
[36:18] Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty seven. Amigas could add graphics and animation
[36:22] Speaker 1: to home video or pro video, so they required an
[36:24] Speaker 1: interlaced display. By the time I tried to help a
[36:28] Speaker 1: friend buy one of the nineties. The parent company no
[36:30] Speaker 1: longer made those monitors. I asked the salesperson, how can
[36:33] Speaker 1: you sell a computer with no display? It isn't easy,
[36:35] Speaker 1: was his reply. Good old commodore, cheers, Pat, great story,
[36:41] Speaker 1: William wrote in on X Hey, I worked for Staples
[36:45] Speaker 1: when they were the premier company for computer sales. Isn't
[36:48] Speaker 1: that wild now? It's like it feels like when you
[36:50] Speaker 1: go into those stores, you know, the office stores, the
[36:53] Speaker 1: office electronics is sort of an afterthought. You know, people
[36:56] Speaker 1: just go in there for paper, And I, quite honestly,
[36:59] Speaker 1: I'm surprise anytime there's a physical store for anything Like
[37:02] Speaker 1: it just feels like they're all just you know, it's
[37:04] Speaker 1: just a matter of time before they all go away.
[37:07] Speaker 1: And so I don't want that to happen. But I
[37:10] Speaker 1: understand the economics of it. I mean, these these stores
[37:12] Speaker 1: are getting undercut by online so easily, and people literally
[37:17] Speaker 1: are doing price comparisons in the store and then saying, oh,
[37:20] Speaker 1: I'll just save a couple bucks and I'll have it
[37:22] Speaker 1: tomorrow morning. This week, Ring introduced a new AI powered
[37:27] Speaker 1: smart video search. This is pretty cool and it's so wild.
[37:32] Speaker 1: It's so wild how much AI has just it's it's funny.
[37:36] Speaker 1: I do a joke every time I interview someone for
[37:38] Speaker 1: KTLA and talk about you know, their product, I say,
[37:40] Speaker 1: and how is AI involved? And ninety nine percent of
[37:44] Speaker 1: the time they have an answer because AI has to
[37:47] Speaker 1: be a part of every product nowadays, no matter what.
[37:52] Speaker 1: And so Ring has this thing called smart Video Search,
[37:55] Speaker 1: and you can now type in just anything you want
[37:59] Speaker 1: to find speciments in your Ring video history. So your
[38:03] Speaker 1: doorbell and your cameras have been recording all these clips.
[38:07] Speaker 1: You know there might be some interesting moments in there,
[38:09] Speaker 1: or maybe you're trying to look for something like you know,
[38:11] Speaker 1: your backyard is all messed up and you're like, what
[38:13] Speaker 1: what animal did that? So you can search for not
[38:16] Speaker 1: only animal, but a specific animal like raccoon. You can
[38:20] Speaker 1: search for locations. You could search for packages, people, time vehicles.
[38:25] Speaker 1: You can say red car and see how many times
[38:27] Speaker 1: that passes your house. Weather, that'd be cool. I'd love
[38:31] Speaker 1: to try to see if you can search lightning. That'd
[38:33] Speaker 1: be kind of cool. And of course some activities as well.
[38:36] Speaker 1: This works across all their Ring video doorbells and cameras.
[38:39] Speaker 1: This is all being done on the back end, so
[38:41] Speaker 1: it doesn't really need any modification on the camera side,
[38:44] Speaker 1: something that's very easy to I don't know about easy,
[38:46] Speaker 1: but they're implementing on the back end, server side, so
[38:50] Speaker 1: that's why they can roll it out on all these cameras.
[38:52] Speaker 1: It's rolling out in public beta to select customers now,
[38:57] Speaker 1: and so that means you will not have access to
[39:00] Speaker 1: it right away, but eventually you will only though, if
[39:04] Speaker 1: you are subscribed to their new top of the line plan,
[39:07] Speaker 1: Ring Home Premium. That's twenty dollars a month. I know
[39:11] Speaker 1: for my Ring, they doubled the price tag from ten
[39:13] Speaker 1: to twenty dollars a month, So I know a lot
[39:15] Speaker 1: of people are not happy about that, but you know,
[39:18] Speaker 1: that's what's happening, and I don't know, we'll see if
[39:21] Speaker 1: Ring changes their mind about that. But Ring, I will say,
[39:24] Speaker 1: has been very inexpensive over the years, and so you know,
[39:28] Speaker 1: twenty bucks a month, it's a lot, but it's kind
[39:30] Speaker 1: of on par with what people are paying for some
[39:32] Speaker 1: of their other Alarm subscriptions, and I believe that includes
[39:35] Speaker 1: some of the alarm features too. November fifth, they're going
[39:39] Speaker 1: to have that new feature those new subscriptions, So there
[39:43] Speaker 1: you go. Ring with AI and if you got an
[39:45] Speaker 1: email about to be owing you some money for a settlement,
[39:49] Speaker 1: it is legitimate. I got a bunch of emails from
[39:51] Speaker 1: people saying rich, is this real? Yes to be. The
[39:55] Speaker 1: free to watch video service is paying nearly twenty million
[39:59] Speaker 1: dollars in a settlement over video privacy. What do they
[40:04] Speaker 1: do well? They shared information with third parties without your consent.
[40:10] Speaker 1: Now I don't know if they agreed to this or
[40:12] Speaker 1: you know, if this is just the settlement. I don't know.
[40:14] Speaker 1: Of course, these companies don't admit any wrongdoing in these settlements.
[40:17] Speaker 1: They just say, fine, settle. So are you eligible? If
[40:21] Speaker 1: you used TUB between June twenty third, twenty twenty one
[40:25] Speaker 1: and August twenty six, twenty twenty four, you are eligible
[40:28] Speaker 1: for cash. So how much are you gonna get? We
[40:32] Speaker 1: don't know. It depends on how many people file claims.
[40:35] Speaker 1: So you should definitely file a claim if you got
[40:38] Speaker 1: that email or if you use TUB. The only way
[40:41] Speaker 1: you have to prove it is if you have an
[40:43] Speaker 1: email account that's registered with TUB or the device information
[40:46] Speaker 1: and dates of use. So the deadline is let's see here.
[40:51] Speaker 1: Claim deadline. November twenty eighth, twenty twenty four. If you
[40:54] Speaker 1: want to exclude yourself from this class action, you gotta
[40:57] Speaker 1: do October thirty first. Anyway, to be how ironic, it's
[41:02] Speaker 1: a free service, free service that people use for free,
[41:06] Speaker 1: and now they got to pay twenty million dollars because
[41:08] Speaker 1: they shared these people's these uh, these customers information with
[41:12] Speaker 1: third parties. And what's that all about. I'm guessing it's
[41:14] Speaker 1: all about advertising, because that's what's supporting to be as
[41:19] Speaker 1: well as a lot of these other services. It's not
[41:21] Speaker 1: really free. Your data is what's supporting it. But apparently
[41:24] Speaker 1: they shared that data with too many people. Eighty eight
[41:27] Speaker 1: Rich one on one eight eight eight seven four to
[41:30] Speaker 1: two four one zero one. Coming up on the show,
[41:32] Speaker 1: we're going to talk about the pros and cons of
[41:35] Speaker 1: those art style TVs. That's this hour. Next hour, we're
[41:38] Speaker 1: going to talk to us Scott Baldwin. He's got a
[41:41] Speaker 1: startup called front Pack. This is a social network for athletes.
[41:45] Speaker 1: Got a new app plus a special guest a little
[41:47] Speaker 1: bit later on. Let's go to line one. Steve in
[41:51] Speaker 1: a Hemmett, Steve and Hemmett. You are on with rich Steve,
[41:57] Speaker 1: Are you there? Nope? Okay, let's go to Uh, let's
[42:02] Speaker 1: see here. Let's go to line too. Kevin in San Clementy. Kevin,
[42:07] Speaker 1: You're on with Rich.
[42:08] Speaker 6: Good afternoon. Just a quick comment. Somebody said about a
[42:11] Speaker 6: kit a while ago. I remember the old Heath Kit
[42:14] Speaker 6: days building, those you know, uh things that Heath Kid offered.
[42:18] Speaker 6: I think it might even still be around. Uh. The
[42:21] Speaker 6: story I wanted to mention was specific stereo. They were
[42:24] Speaker 6: on paying a Canyon and I think that's Kilga Park
[42:27] Speaker 6: out there that was around for years and years and years.
[42:31] Speaker 1: Oh, isn't it didn't It looks like they're still around.
[42:34] Speaker 1: Is Oh? You know what I just you just made
[42:36] Speaker 1: me think of another one, Alan Eds remember that.
[42:40] Speaker 6: No, there was something Eds on Central Boulevard, I think
[42:47] Speaker 6: in Tarzan or something.
[42:49] Speaker 1: Alan Ed's Alan Ed's auto sound. It was like they
[42:52] Speaker 1: did all car audio.
[42:54] Speaker 6: Yep.
[42:55] Speaker 1: Yeah. And I remember getting like it was like I
[42:58] Speaker 1: obviously it was. It was too expensive for me back
[43:00] Speaker 1: in the day when I first moved to La like
[43:02] Speaker 1: to get something, but that's like where you wanted to
[43:04] Speaker 1: get it done, because it was like, you know, you
[43:06] Speaker 1: could go to Best Buy, but like that's going to
[43:08] Speaker 1: be you know, just okay. But this place was like
[43:10] Speaker 1: they knew what they were doing. They knew their stuff absolutely. Yeah.
[43:14] Speaker 6: So what my question is, I've got a pair of
[43:16] Speaker 6: KLH Models five that have the paper cones the mid
[43:20] Speaker 6: range and the woofer or paper cones. How long do
[43:24] Speaker 6: paper cones last unless you blow them out?
[43:28] Speaker 1: That's a great question that I do not know the
[43:30] Speaker 1: complete answer to. What I would say, until they don't
[43:34] Speaker 1: sound good anymore? I mean, what is there a problem
[43:36] Speaker 1: with these speakers?
[43:37] Speaker 5: No?
[43:38] Speaker 6: No, no, it was just something I thought of that.
[43:41] Speaker 6: You know, I'm just curious how long are these going
[43:43] Speaker 6: to last? Because the ones I have are pre the
[43:46] Speaker 6: new owners of KLH. Now, these were I think KLH
[43:50] Speaker 6: sold in twenty seventeen or something, so these are the
[43:53] Speaker 6: original KLH speakers. So I was just ordered how long
[43:57] Speaker 6: are they going to last?
[43:59] Speaker 1: How? How how old are these things?
[44:02] Speaker 6: Uh? Probably fifteen years old?
[44:05] Speaker 1: Okay? And they still sound good? I'm sorry, they still
[44:09] Speaker 1: sound good.
[44:10] Speaker 6: They sound awesome.
[44:13] Speaker 1: Well, then, I mean, I'm you know, I think they're
[44:15] Speaker 1: they're probably fine. I mean it's I'm looking at some
[44:19] Speaker 1: some info online. It says with good care, twenty to
[44:22] Speaker 1: forty years could be reasonable. But that, you know, I mean,
[44:25] Speaker 1: that sounds like a lot, But you know it's a speaker.
[44:28] Speaker 1: I've it's funny. I I've got the so no speakers
[44:30] Speaker 1: that I've complained about obviously on this show, But I
[44:33] Speaker 1: keep thinking, I'm like, when are these no good anymore?
[44:36] Speaker 1: And I'm like, I guess when they don't work anymore?
[44:38] Speaker 1: I mean, if it's still sounding fine, like it's a speaker, Like,
[44:41] Speaker 1: what more do you need if it's if it's sounding good.
[44:43] Speaker 1: It's funny because we're so used to replacing things and
[44:46] Speaker 1: getting rid of things. But I bet, I bet even
[44:49] Speaker 1: if these things went out, you could probably still repair
[44:51] Speaker 1: them if they if they if someone still the parts.
[44:54] Speaker 6: Yeah, good point. Okay, Well, I enjoy what you do
[44:58] Speaker 6: for us.
[44:59] Speaker 1: Thanks for the trip down memory lane. What was the
[45:02] Speaker 1: other thing they also had? You know, all these companies
[45:04] Speaker 1: have been absorbed by other companies. A lot of them have,
[45:06] Speaker 1: like Best Buy had what was it Pacific Sales? They
[45:10] Speaker 1: I thought Pacific Stereo was part of that. But Pacific
[45:13] Speaker 1: Sales I think was like an independent place that they
[45:15] Speaker 1: ended up absorbing into best Buy as well. So let's
[45:19] Speaker 1: see what was the you said, Let's see what was it?
[45:22] Speaker 1: Pacific Stereo looks like it's still around as far as
[45:25] Speaker 1: I can tell, is this just an online thing? I'm
[45:27] Speaker 1: not sure, but yeah, it's wild to go down down
[45:31] Speaker 1: memory lane with some of these things. Okay, do we
[45:32] Speaker 1: have time to go to uh? Sounds like our other
[45:35] Speaker 1: callers back online one? We have time for Steve and Hemmett. No, No,
[45:39] Speaker 1: we don't. Okay, all right, oh Steven Hemmt's gone. Okay, Well,
[45:42] Speaker 1: this is what happens in a live show here. You know,
[45:45] Speaker 1: we get people, we drop people, they drop whatever. Okay,
[45:49] Speaker 1: So a couple of things. The newsletter on the website
[45:52] Speaker 1: rich on tech dot tv, So if you go there
[45:54] Speaker 1: you can sign up for my free newsletter. I got
[45:56] Speaker 1: a lot of emails this week from folks who, surpriseingly,
[46:00] Speaker 1: do not want to switch. You know, you have to
[46:02] Speaker 1: if you're on Verizon Messages Plus, you have to switch
[46:06] Speaker 1: to Google Messages. And I got a lot of emails
[46:09] Speaker 1: from people saying I didn't want to switch because they
[46:11] Speaker 1: don't want Google having access to their messages. They they're
[46:14] Speaker 1: missing certain features that they had in Verizon Message Plus
[46:18] Speaker 1: that Google Messages does not have. And they're asking me
[46:20] Speaker 1: if they could use a different app now on Android. Yeah,
[46:23] Speaker 1: that's the beauty of Android you could use. There's one
[46:25] Speaker 1: thousand texting apps in the Google Play. You can choose
[46:29] Speaker 1: any one of them. Obviously, make sure it's a company
[46:31] Speaker 1: you trust because these are your texts. There's a lot
[46:33] Speaker 1: of personal information in there. But they're not going to
[46:36] Speaker 1: support RCS, and that's the big thing. If you want
[46:39] Speaker 1: that RCS support, you can go with Samsung Messages. You
[46:42] Speaker 1: could still download that from the Galaxy Galaxy Store, but
[46:46] Speaker 1: you're only going to get RCS, which upgrades your messaging
[46:49] Speaker 1: from Android to Android and Android to iPhone if you
[46:52] Speaker 1: use that Google Messages. Eighty to eight rich one oh
[46:55] Speaker 1: one more Rich on Tech come your way right after this.
[46:59] Speaker 1: Welcome back to on Tech. Rich Demiro here hanging out
[47:02] Speaker 1: with you talking technology at Triple eight Rich one on one.
[47:05] Speaker 1: That's eight eight eight seven four to two four one
[47:08] Speaker 1: zero one. The website for the show Rich on Tech
[47:12] Speaker 1: dot tv. You can also sign up for my newsletter
[47:15] Speaker 1: there and email me. Just hit contact. Or if you
[47:18] Speaker 1: want show notes, anything I mentioned on the show, I
[47:21] Speaker 1: put on the show notes, just hit the light bulb
[47:23] Speaker 1: and you'll see all of the shows and the notes
[47:26] Speaker 1: for that. Did you participate in Amazon's Prime Big Deal
[47:31] Speaker 1: Days twenty twenty four. I bought exactly one thing. It
[47:34] Speaker 1: was a fog machine for my kid, replacing the old
[47:37] Speaker 1: one we had, and yet it was on sale. It
[47:39] Speaker 1: was great, but I did not get anything else, and
[47:41] Speaker 1: a lot of things were on sale. I do think
[47:43] Speaker 1: that these sales are getting better. I think Amazon is
[47:46] Speaker 1: learning their lesson by putting more things on sale and
[47:48] Speaker 1: not just promising a lot. But they say it was
[47:52] Speaker 1: Amazon's biggest October shopping event ever. I mean that really
[47:56] Speaker 1: narrows it down.
[47:58] Speaker 6: Prime.
[47:58] Speaker 1: Remember saved over one billion dollars globally across millions of deals.
[48:03] Speaker 1: They never tell you how much they spent, though, right,
[48:05] Speaker 1: because that would be that would be too much for
[48:07] Speaker 1: our brains to handle. More Prime members participated this year
[48:11] Speaker 1: compared to last year's event, and they've got more deals
[48:14] Speaker 1: coming up. Fourth Annual Holiday Beauty Haul October twenty first
[48:18] Speaker 1: and November third. That's a long one. That just sounds
[48:21] Speaker 1: like a tiktoker's dream.
[48:22] Speaker 8: Right.
[48:23] Speaker 1: It's talking to my sister and she she said she
[48:26] Speaker 1: buys everything that she sees on TikTok, all these beauty
[48:29] Speaker 1: products that people are hawking all day, and it's a
[48:31] Speaker 1: big business. I'm sure because that's like half of the
[48:34] Speaker 1: stuff on there is like beauty tutorials. Right then you've
[48:37] Speaker 1: got the Black Friday Game, the NFL Black Friday Game
[48:41] Speaker 1: football game on November twenty ninth. I guess they're going
[48:43] Speaker 1: to have some sort of deals there. Amazon spent a
[48:46] Speaker 1: lot of money for those football rights, so I see
[48:49] Speaker 1: the ads everywhere for that, and it's great. They're their
[48:51] Speaker 1: football is so clear, it's unbelievable. I don't know how
[48:54] Speaker 1: they're broadcasting or whatever they're doing, whatever magic they've got,
[48:58] Speaker 1: but it's it's such a play to watch football games
[49:02] Speaker 1: on Prime, and it's just the way it should be.
[49:04] Speaker 4: Right.
[49:04] Speaker 1: You can just watch it on any device anywhere, no
[49:06] Speaker 1: matter what. And right now you can get ten percent
[49:10] Speaker 1: discount on select toys for purchase over twenty five dollars
[49:14] Speaker 1: until October thirty. First, obviously, you need a Prime membership
[49:17] Speaker 1: for all this stuff fifteen bucks a month one hundred
[49:19] Speaker 1: and thirty nine dollars a year, but if you have it,
[49:21] Speaker 1: it's well worth it. Let's see here, Let's go to
[49:25] Speaker 1: line three. Brady and Anaheim. Brady and Anaheim. You're on
[49:30] Speaker 1: with Rich.
[49:32] Speaker 9: Hi, How are you doing?
[49:34] Speaker 1: I am doing excellent? What can I help you.
[49:35] Speaker 2: With So I've used every Note as a note taking
[49:39] Speaker 2: app for almost ten years, but last year when Broken
[49:43] Speaker 2: Spoons bought them, they limited the devices, raised prices, made
[49:48] Speaker 2: it more difficult to use. So I want to know
[49:51] Speaker 2: if you're aware of an app that I could use
[49:53] Speaker 2: the export all my notes that would work with iOS, Windows, Android,
[49:58] Speaker 2: because everywhere I so far there's an issue like, no
[50:02] Speaker 2: you can you have to still have ever note and updated,
[50:05] Speaker 2: you know, one drive One Note's been a kind of
[50:08] Speaker 2: a hassle. Yeah, you have any ideas?
[50:11] Speaker 1: Are you looking into my brain? Because I think about
[50:14] Speaker 1: this every single day. I have hopped between every single
[50:17] Speaker 1: one of these note taking apps. I was one of
[50:20] Speaker 1: the first new users of ever note Ever. I mean
[50:22] Speaker 1: I remember I was a user so far back in
[50:25] Speaker 1: the day. It was it was like an ever scroll.
[50:28] Speaker 1: It was just an ever, never ending scroll of notes
[50:31] Speaker 1: that you would put it on, and then of course
[50:33] Speaker 1: it's evolved over the years. You're right. It was purchased
[50:36] Speaker 1: by an Italian company, Bending Spoons. I know you called it,
[50:39] Speaker 1: what did you call it, Problem Spoons or something?
[50:42] Speaker 2: Spoons?
[50:43] Speaker 1: Broken Spoons. Now I got to give them credit. I
[50:45] Speaker 1: actually think the updates and improvements they've done to ever
[50:48] Speaker 1: Note is excellent. I think they've done a good job
[50:50] Speaker 1: with it. But yes, you are right, they have squeezed
[50:52] Speaker 1: out the free user to a place where it's unusable
[50:56] Speaker 1: if you're if you're a free user, and I would
[50:58] Speaker 1: agree with that. If you're trying to use this for free,
[51:00] Speaker 1: don't even bother because you're gonna either hit the limits,
[51:04] Speaker 1: you know, in three days, or it's just not worth it.
[51:07] Speaker 1: The other thing is that ever note stores everything in
[51:09] Speaker 1: a proprietary way, which is you can export it. But
[51:12] Speaker 1: I found out because I was a big Evernote user
[51:14] Speaker 1: for many years. When I wanted to export, it got
[51:17] Speaker 1: really tricky and everything was kind of gobbledygook. And it's
[51:20] Speaker 1: taken me years to kind of climb out of that.
[51:23] Speaker 1: So what if I tried I've tried one Note. I
[51:25] Speaker 1: don't like one Note because it the way it's got
[51:29] Speaker 1: that infinite canvas I just deal with when you paste
[51:32] Speaker 1: something in there, the text is like in one little
[51:34] Speaker 1: box and then it moves over. It's just two doesn't
[51:38] Speaker 1: work for my brain. Notion is what I'll tell you.
[51:41] Speaker 1: I've settled on that, but I'll tell you I'll go
[51:43] Speaker 1: through the thing. Obsidian is what I was using for
[51:46] Speaker 1: a while, and I think Obsidian is probably, if you're
[51:49] Speaker 1: a little bit of a nerd, the best alternative to
[51:52] Speaker 1: ever Note because it is mostly self hosted. Your files
[51:56] Speaker 1: live on your machine. The file structure and every thing
[52:00] Speaker 1: is very similar to Evernote. It's not as polished, it's not,
[52:03] Speaker 1: as you know, full featured, but I think Obsidian is
[52:07] Speaker 1: really good. You just have to figure out a way
[52:09] Speaker 1: to sink it across devices, and that includes either paying
[52:12] Speaker 1: them or doing it yourself. Apple Notes no good because
[52:15] Speaker 1: it's just one platform, and then you've got Joplin, which
[52:19] Speaker 1: is an open source program. But I find that it's
[52:23] Speaker 1: good and I think it's very similar. It's basically an
[52:25] Speaker 1: Evernote clone, but open source. I just didn't like the
[52:28] Speaker 1: fact that it doesn't really sink in the background, and
[52:31] Speaker 1: it's a little bit old school looking compared now. The
[52:34] Speaker 1: one that I've settled on has been Notion, and again
[52:37] Speaker 1: you do probably have to pay if you want to
[52:39] Speaker 1: use Notion in a big way, but I think it's
[52:41] Speaker 1: the cleanest of all the programs. The thing I don't
[52:43] Speaker 1: like about it is the file structure. Everything is sort
[52:46] Speaker 1: of link based, which is good, but it does take
[52:50] Speaker 1: a little bit of learning. And you can't organize your
[52:52] Speaker 1: file folders if you want to call that in alphabetical order,
[52:56] Speaker 1: which really really bugs me. But I would say those
[53:00] Speaker 1: your options. You kind of have to just play with them.
[53:04] Speaker 1: And see I did download ever note again today to
[53:07] Speaker 1: take a second look. But the problem is it's one
[53:08] Speaker 1: hundred and thirty bucks a year, and once you start
[53:11] Speaker 1: getting into these programs, if you're if you're in it
[53:13] Speaker 1: for the long haul, you're gonna be paying that forever.
[53:16] Speaker 1: So it really comes down to a matter more preference.
[53:18] Speaker 1: Coming up, we're gonna talk frame style art TVs with
[53:22] Speaker 1: Christian Deloper. Welcome back to rich on Tech. Rich DeMuro
[53:26] Speaker 1: here hanging out with you, talking technology at triple eight
[53:29] Speaker 1: Rich one O one. That's eight eight eight seven four
[53:32] Speaker 1: to two four one zero one, the website rich on
[53:36] Speaker 1: Tech dot TV. Hit contact if you want to get
[53:38] Speaker 1: in touch. Uh Joining me now is a tech journalist
[53:43] Speaker 1: Christian Delooper, to talk about the pros and cons of
[53:47] Speaker 1: art style TVs. Christian, Welcome to the show. Hey, Rich,
[53:51] Speaker 1: how's it going. Thanks for having me, Yeah, thanks for
[53:54] Speaker 1: coming on. Let's uh so, first off, what is an
[53:56] Speaker 1: art style TV. What does that mean exactly?
[53:59] Speaker 10: So I think like maybe three or four years ago
[54:02] Speaker 10: we saw the first one from Samsung, which is the
[54:04] Speaker 10: kind of much loved or much googled Samsung, the Frame TV,
[54:08] Speaker 10: and the goal of the TV was essentially to kind
[54:11] Speaker 10: of replace the big black box that's always in your
[54:14] Speaker 10: living room with something that can not only be a
[54:17] Speaker 10: TV but also kind of like a painting.
[54:21] Speaker 1: Right, And this is something when I first saw it,
[54:23] Speaker 1: I was like, Oh, I want this because it's like
[54:26] Speaker 1: this TV just hangs on your wall, but when you're
[54:29] Speaker 1: not using it, it looks like a framed piece of art. Yeah,
[54:33] Speaker 1: pretty much. Yeah, I felt the same way.
[54:35] Speaker 10: And they basically use a few different technologies to kind
[54:38] Speaker 10: of look less like a glossy black box like I mentioned,
[54:42] Speaker 10: and kind of more like a painting. For example, they
[54:44] Speaker 10: have typically a matte glass instead of a glossy glass
[54:48] Speaker 10: that can that's kind of anti reflective so that they,
[54:51] Speaker 10: you know, paintings aren't reflective, so that they look much
[54:53] Speaker 10: more like paintings when they're showing a picture of a
[54:56] Speaker 10: painting behind there.
[54:57] Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure Samsung tried to like fake everyone out
[55:00] Speaker 1: the first time they unveil this where they had had
[55:02] Speaker 1: us in a room or something and they're like, oh,
[55:04] Speaker 1: and then it changes to like a TV. So now
[55:07] Speaker 1: we've got some competition. High Sense also has one called
[55:10] Speaker 1: the Canvas TV. You tested that, yep, yep. I tested
[55:13] Speaker 1: that last month. It's their first model, the heighcensed Canvas TV.
[55:17] Speaker 1: I think the model name is S seven or something.
[55:18] Speaker 1: So hopefully we'll see other models from them. And that
[55:21] Speaker 1: one's pretty interesting because it's taking on Samsung at a
[55:25] Speaker 1: much lower price point. You know, the fifty five inch
[55:27] Speaker 1: frame TV is fifteen hundred dollars, but the heists model
[55:31] Speaker 1: is a thousand bucks, so you know, five hundred bucks
[55:33] Speaker 1: cheaper is a big deal. Yeah, and I have a
[55:36] Speaker 1: high Sense, so I'm actually I can say the quality
[55:39] Speaker 1: is great. I like it a lot, and so I
[55:42] Speaker 1: think that this is probably a nice option. So what
[55:45] Speaker 1: who do you think these are for? Like how do
[55:47] Speaker 1: they work day to day? Like when you turn off
[55:48] Speaker 1: your TV? Does it it just shows the artwork? And
[55:51] Speaker 1: can you choose what you want on there?
[55:54] Speaker 10: So it's complicated you can choose what you want. Typically
[55:59] Speaker 10: they have a kind of art mode, so instead of
[56:02] Speaker 10: hitting the power button on the remote, you'd hit the
[56:05] Speaker 10: art Mode button to put it into art Mode, and
[56:07] Speaker 10: then you know, with the Hyacinths and the Samsung as well,
[56:10] Speaker 10: they typically turn off after a while. Especially the newer
[56:14] Speaker 10: models have like motion detection or light detection, so if
[56:16] Speaker 10: I think it's night and no one's around, everyone's asleep,
[56:18] Speaker 10: they'll just kind of turn off. But you have to
[56:23] Speaker 10: unless you're willing to tinker a lot. You have to
[56:24] Speaker 10: use the built in software to really.
[56:26] Speaker 1: Get the most out of the art Mode.
[56:28] Speaker 10: I still have the TV set up I reviewed it
[56:30] Speaker 10: a month ago, but I use an Apple TV and
[56:33] Speaker 10: as a result, it's never really an art Mode. It's
[56:35] Speaker 10: just kind of it looks like an empty frame.
[56:39] Speaker 1: Oh that's interesting, yeah, because I'm sure there's like things
[56:42] Speaker 1: competing with these, like you know, your screensavers on your
[56:45] Speaker 1: other things as well, like yeah, streaming box connected. So
[56:49] Speaker 1: is there So I was mentioning earlier on the show,
[56:51] Speaker 1: there's always like a pro and con to something. So
[56:53] Speaker 1: these TVs are expensive, are they as high quality like
[56:57] Speaker 1: typically like if you're watching the regular content as you know,
[57:01] Speaker 1: a nice ole letter or something like that, or is
[57:02] Speaker 1: there a downside to the screen tech that they're using
[57:05] Speaker 1: to make these look like art.
[57:07] Speaker 10: Yeah, so the downside is not as much about the screen, well,
[57:11] Speaker 10: it is about the screen tech, but the screen tech
[57:12] Speaker 10: as a result of the form factor. So these are
[57:15] Speaker 10: built to be super thin. They're built to be mounted
[57:17] Speaker 10: on a wall and look like a picture when they're
[57:19] Speaker 10: not in use. But the result of the thinness is
[57:22] Speaker 10: less cooling and less space for a new tech. So
[57:25] Speaker 10: the answer is no, that the image quality is not
[57:27] Speaker 10: anywhere near you know, you mentioned you have a high
[57:29] Speaker 10: sense before I reviewed this one. I reviewed the latest
[57:32] Speaker 10: license you eight, which is a stunning looking TV.
[57:36] Speaker 1: But that's the one I've got. Yeah, it's a great TV.
[57:39] Speaker 10: But the highcensed Canvas TV, while great, is Yeah, the
[57:43] Speaker 10: image quality just doesn't compare. And that's mostly mostly because
[57:45] Speaker 10: of the backlighting technology that just can't produce the same
[57:49] Speaker 10: deep black levels that dominild black lighting that you know,
[57:53] Speaker 10: higher end models can.
[57:55] Speaker 1: So, now when you said that you have this thing
[57:57] Speaker 1: set up but it's sort of just a black screen,
[57:59] Speaker 1: why is that?
[58:01] Speaker 10: Basically because typically well typically I always use the Apple TV.
[58:06] Speaker 10: You know, our household is Apple based, so I can't
[58:11] Speaker 10: There's no Art TV button on the Apple TV, and
[58:14] Speaker 10: I don't see Apple adding one anytime soon. So when
[58:18] Speaker 10: I'm not using the TV, I use HDMI controls, so
[58:21] Speaker 10: I can use my Apple TV remode all the time.
[58:23] Speaker 10: So I hit off and it just goes straight to off.
[58:26] Speaker 10: You know, that's one of the biggest issues I had
[58:28] Speaker 10: with it, is that I wish you could. You can
[58:29] Speaker 10: set up Hdmi to control the TV through the volume
[58:33] Speaker 10: and the power button and all that kind of stuff,
[58:34] Speaker 10: but you can't set up the TV to say, hey,
[58:37] Speaker 10: I just got an off signal, I'm going to go
[58:39] Speaker 10: in art mode instead of OFF because I prefer to
[58:43] Speaker 10: have art mode.
[58:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I'm sure that's something they could do
[58:47] Speaker 1: with a software update, and you know, because it doesn't
[58:50] Speaker 1: seem like it would be that tricky, it's interesting. So yeah,
[58:53] Speaker 1: and there are some hacks around it too, So like,
[58:55] Speaker 1: for example, I could change the Apple TV screen savers
[58:58] Speaker 1: to be paintings instead of to kind of bird's eye
[59:02] Speaker 1: view screensavers that Apple TV has become famous for, and
[59:05] Speaker 1: that would kind of get around it, but you still
[59:07] Speaker 1: won't get the automatic brightness technology like the Canvas TV
[59:11] Speaker 1: can change brightness depending on the.
[59:12] Speaker 10: Environment, so it looks a little more natural, and.
[59:15] Speaker 1: You won't get the automatic.
[59:16] Speaker 10: It can kind of turn on and off if it
[59:17] Speaker 10: detects motion, so if there's no one in the room,
[59:20] Speaker 10: it'll be off without the TV being fully off, and
[59:23] Speaker 10: then switch back on if someone comes to the room.
[59:24] Speaker 1: That kind of thing.
[59:25] Speaker 10: So you can kind of get around it, but kind
[59:27] Speaker 10: of not.
[59:28] Speaker 1: So what you're saying is if you want to get
[59:31] Speaker 1: the most out of these TVs, you sort of have
[59:33] Speaker 1: to use their built in streaming service. Does this one?
[59:36] Speaker 1: Does High Sense have like a Google TV or anything
[59:38] Speaker 1: built in? Yeah, yeah, that's right.
[59:40] Speaker 10: It's Google TV built into the Highcense TCL has a
[59:43] Speaker 10: model as well, and that's Google TV, and there's the
[59:46] Speaker 10: Samsung the frame. You don't necessarily have to use the
[59:48] Speaker 10: built in software, but you do have to be willing.
[59:51] Speaker 10: If you're using an external box, you do have to
[59:53] Speaker 10: be willing to use two remotes, or at least I
[59:58] Speaker 10: think you can technically set up the TV remote that
[1:00:00] Speaker 10: comes with the Hyacins to control your Apple TV as well,
[1:00:03] Speaker 10: so that that might be a good way around it
[1:00:04] Speaker 10: for those who are willing to not use the Apple
[1:00:07] Speaker 10: TV remote and still want art Mode.
[1:00:10] Speaker 1: But as someone okay, but that's ironic because if you're
[1:00:12] Speaker 1: buying one of these art TVs. You love aesthetics and
[1:00:15] Speaker 1: now you're using like the worst possible real control to plastic.
[1:00:22] Speaker 1: But I do use the remote for the high sense.
[1:00:24] Speaker 1: Like I I was so against it for so long.
[1:00:27] Speaker 1: I had like a third I had my Apple TV
[1:00:28] Speaker 1: actually connected to the TV. But then I was like,
[1:00:31] Speaker 1: why do I need this extra box, Like as much
[1:00:33] Speaker 1: as I love Apple TV, like Google TV does everything
[1:00:36] Speaker 1: I need and it's one less remote, and so I
[1:00:39] Speaker 1: just you know, that's what we use. But uh, okay,
[1:00:41] Speaker 1: So the TCL one looks like it's called the Next
[1:00:43] Speaker 1: Frame nxt Frame TV, so they're doing this as well,
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: and yeah, sorry what was that? Yeah, no, go ahead,
[1:00:53] Speaker 1: talk about this one.
[1:00:54] Speaker 4: That one is.
[1:00:55] Speaker 10: Yeah, that was really promising because the the big disadvantage
[1:00:59] Speaker 10: to these over the past few years has been kind
[1:01:01] Speaker 10: of the backlighting technology. We've seeing a lot of different
[1:01:04] Speaker 10: backlight technologies make for a more natural image because they
[1:01:08] Speaker 10: can turn off sections of the display to produce true
[1:01:12] Speaker 10: black levels. The Next Frame can't do that, but it
[1:01:15] Speaker 10: does have what's called direct lit backlighting instead of the
[1:01:19] Speaker 10: canvas TV and the frame's edge lit. So with an
[1:01:22] Speaker 10: edge lit TV, they basically shine lights in through the
[1:01:24] Speaker 10: edges will The next frame has a big backlight behind
[1:01:27] Speaker 10: the display so that the lighting is much more uniform.
[1:01:30] Speaker 10: They can't still can't get really good control over the
[1:01:33] Speaker 10: black levels. It doesn't have local dimming or anything like that,
[1:01:36] Speaker 10: but it is a much more uniform lighting if you
[1:01:40] Speaker 10: care about that.
[1:01:42] Speaker 1: And the main thing, like if someone's listening and they're
[1:01:43] Speaker 1: sitting there going wait, I'm so confused, Like I've had
[1:01:46] Speaker 1: a screensaver on my TV forever, like what's different? The
[1:01:50] Speaker 1: main thing is the actual when you walk into a
[1:01:52] Speaker 1: room and see this TV. If it's an art style TV,
[1:01:56] Speaker 1: it is a different look. It looks much more closer
[1:01:58] Speaker 1: to like, let's say the printed painted page versus you know,
[1:02:02] Speaker 1: a bright picture.
[1:02:04] Speaker 10: Yeah, that's right, it's the main Like physical differences are
[1:02:07] Speaker 10: the matt anti reflective gloss that's used. And then I
[1:02:11] Speaker 10: guess the frames that you could put around them that
[1:02:14] Speaker 10: come with the highcense, and I think that the TCL
[1:02:17] Speaker 10: as well for free, but you have to buy separately
[1:02:18] Speaker 10: for the frame.
[1:02:20] Speaker 1: Okay, and now if you want a kind of a
[1:02:22] Speaker 1: cheaper way to do this, DIY, you know, Amazon's got
[1:02:26] Speaker 1: what they call the ambient Experience on Fire TV. And
[1:02:29] Speaker 1: that's on their fire TV Omni. It's also on the
[1:02:32] Speaker 1: fire Stick four K Max and some Panasonic fire TVs.
[1:02:36] Speaker 1: And then, like I said, I was at my mom's
[1:02:39] Speaker 1: place helping her with her Roku, and they just added
[1:02:41] Speaker 1: what's called the backdrops, and it's basically turns your TV
[1:02:45] Speaker 1: into an art style TV. Now you're not going to
[1:02:47] Speaker 1: get that same dimming and all the you know, the
[1:02:49] Speaker 1: matt look, but it's the same thing. Like when I
[1:02:52] Speaker 1: pressed her power button on the Roku. Once I set
[1:02:55] Speaker 1: it up, it went into art mode and then you
[1:02:57] Speaker 1: press again and it turns off the TV. So I
[1:02:59] Speaker 1: thought that was pretty cool that they added that as well.
[1:03:01] Speaker 1: And obviously a lot of people have real cool Yeah, yeah,
[1:03:03] Speaker 1: it is pretty cool.
[1:03:04] Speaker 10: If you really want to go DIY, you can just
[1:03:07] Speaker 10: find pictures that you like and make those your screensaver
[1:03:10] Speaker 10: on at any smart TV.
[1:03:13] Speaker 1: I don't think it's hard to do.
[1:03:14] Speaker 10: And then so when your TV goes into screensaver mode,
[1:03:17] Speaker 10: you could do it on an Apple TV or anything
[1:03:19] Speaker 10: like that. It'll be shown the art behind the glossy
[1:03:22] Speaker 10: glass that won't look completely.
[1:03:23] Speaker 1: Like a painting like some of these art TVs do.
[1:03:25] Speaker 1: But yeah, it's a good hack. All right, Christian Delooper.
[1:03:30] Speaker 1: Where can folks find you? We're online.
[1:03:32] Speaker 10: I write for all all sorts of places. I'm a
[1:03:35] Speaker 10: expert for our hosting advice. I write reviews for BGR
[1:03:38] Speaker 10: Tom's Guide, do a lot of smart home, a lot
[1:03:41] Speaker 10: of home theater. You can find me on threads and
[1:03:43] Speaker 10: then you'll see some of my work at Christian Delooper.
[1:03:47] Speaker 1: And the end of the day, which one are you picking?
[1:03:49] Speaker 1: The frame, the canvas, the TCL or just sticking with
[1:03:52] Speaker 1: the Apple TV end of the day.
[1:03:55] Speaker 10: The frame is probably the best looking so far, but
[1:03:57] Speaker 10: I haven't reviewed the TCL just yet, and it's pretty
[1:04:00] Speaker 10: promising in terms of the backlining tech, So we'll see.
[1:04:04] Speaker 1: All right. I, like I said, I've always wanted one
[1:04:06] Speaker 1: of these, but haven't haven't done it, and I feel
[1:04:09] Speaker 1: like we really got to be into that art. Yeah exactly,
[1:04:12] Speaker 1: all right, Thanks so much for joining me. Appreciate it.
[1:04:15] Speaker 1: Eighty eight rich one O one eight eight eight seven
[1:04:17] Speaker 1: four to two four one zero one. We come back.
[1:04:19] Speaker 1: We'll take some more of your calls, and I'll tell
[1:04:21] Speaker 1: you why TikTok's getting sued once again. Welcome back to
[1:04:27] Speaker 1: rich on Tech. Rich Demiro here hanging out with you
[1:04:29] Speaker 1: Talking technology eighty eight Rich one O one eighty eight
[1:04:34] Speaker 1: seven four to two, four to one zero one coming
[1:04:38] Speaker 1: to you from New Jersey today. Hence the music all
[1:04:42] Speaker 1: Jersey inspired. Bon Jovi clearly one of the breakout stars
[1:04:48] Speaker 1: of New Jersey. A couple of feedbags before we get
[1:04:51] Speaker 1: to uh Todd in Santa Monica to talk about this
[1:04:54] Speaker 1: hackathon they've got going on there. Danny wrote in from Riverside, said, Hey,
[1:04:58] Speaker 1: back in the eighties, the Federated Group was one of
[1:05:02] Speaker 1: the fourth largest consumer electronics stores in the US. If
[1:05:05] Speaker 1: you mentioned you were in radio, they'd give you a
[1:05:07] Speaker 1: discount on Sendheiser headphones. Besides headphones, I bought my first
[1:05:11] Speaker 1: Dolby surround stereo system there. Great for movie watching. Then
[1:05:15] Speaker 1: you had Circuit Oh let's see radio personality. Oh Shadow Stevens.
[1:05:19] Speaker 1: Huh wow, I remember that name was their spokesperson. Wow.
[1:05:23] Speaker 1: That just brought back blasts from the past. Circuit City,
[1:05:25] Speaker 1: where I bought my first big screen TV, eventually became
[1:05:28] Speaker 1: their main competitor. Atari bought Federated in nineteen eighty seven.
[1:05:32] Speaker 1: After a few lawsuits, they folded in nineteen ninety All
[1:05:36] Speaker 1: the best, Rich hmm, It's interesting. That's another place people.
[1:05:40] Speaker 1: Oh that was another like Montgomery Ward, remember that store.
[1:05:43] Speaker 1: That was another place you could buy electronics. So many
[1:05:46] Speaker 1: let's see I believe on X says Fyi, Alan Eds
[1:05:50] Speaker 1: are still going strong. There's one close to me. Oh,
[1:05:52] Speaker 1: good to know always like that's who you wanted to
[1:05:56] Speaker 1: install your stuff again, Alan Eds, Let's go to a
[1:05:59] Speaker 1: line too, Todd in Santa Monica. Todd, what's going on
[1:06:04] Speaker 1: in Santa Monica today?
[1:06:06] Speaker 8: Hey, Rich, good to hear from you. We're hosting AILA
[1:06:10] Speaker 8: is hosting the largest hack jenerative AI hackathon in the
[1:06:13] Speaker 8: region with over five hundred people and it's a pretty
[1:06:16] Speaker 8: electric over here right now.
[1:06:18] Speaker 1: What's a generative AI hackathons? Use AI to help you hack?
[1:06:22] Speaker 1: Or what?
[1:06:23] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[1:06:23] Speaker 8: Exactly is this really? You know, you could be using
[1:06:25] Speaker 8: AI to write your code or actually developing some tind
[1:06:27] Speaker 8: of a generative AI platform. So we have a number
[1:06:31] Speaker 8: of different types of tracks, whether it's around responsible AI,
[1:06:34] Speaker 8: or is around building of a viable startup, a fundable startup,
[1:06:38] Speaker 8: or around cybersecurity. And then we have a ton of
[1:06:40] Speaker 8: different Obviously we're in Los Angeles, so we've got a
[1:06:42] Speaker 8: ton of different tracks focusing on entertainment and media.
[1:06:46] Speaker 1: So I guess my question is, you know, everyone thinks
[1:06:48] Speaker 1: that AI is the end of everything, especially if you're
[1:06:51] Speaker 1: a coder, Like do you still have to learn how
[1:06:53] Speaker 1: to code? How does AI play along with what you
[1:06:55] Speaker 1: do as a coder.
[1:06:57] Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean there's definitely a number of different types
[1:06:59] Speaker 8: of products that are helping people code faster and better.
[1:07:02] Speaker 8: Like think of it as always having like an assistant
[1:07:04] Speaker 8: or co pilot next to you. And so for me,
[1:07:07] Speaker 8: as a non clinical person that went to film school,
[1:07:09] Speaker 8: I still believe that no matter what, understanding the science
[1:07:13] Speaker 8: behind AI and the science behind computer you know around
[1:07:17] Speaker 8: coding is very important. So don't give up on going
[1:07:21] Speaker 8: to get your computer science degree anytime soon.
[1:07:24] Speaker 1: And what are some of the themes that you're seeing there?
[1:07:26] Speaker 1: I mean, I know you mentioned some about anything that's
[1:07:28] Speaker 1: like stand out to you that people are doing.
[1:07:31] Speaker 8: I haven't had a chance to walk around. We seriously
[1:07:33] Speaker 8: started like a two hours ago when people started hacking.
[1:07:35] Speaker 8: They're going to be working on their projects overnight and
[1:07:38] Speaker 8: so tomorrow I'll be able to have more to report abile.
[1:07:41] Speaker 8: But there's people, you know, thinking of a lot of
[1:07:43] Speaker 8: different applications that some of them are centered around how
[1:07:46] Speaker 8: do they use content, how do they digest content and
[1:07:49] Speaker 8: edit it in bite sized pieces to like highlight reels,
[1:07:52] Speaker 8: or helping YouTubers be able to again cut their content
[1:07:56] Speaker 8: faster as a rough cut, so that then they can
[1:07:59] Speaker 8: go in and talluld.
[1:08:00] Speaker 1: And make it beautiful so wild. I mean, it's also
[1:08:03] Speaker 1: like even something like this radio show which is three hours,
[1:08:07] Speaker 1: you know, picking out little spots that you can make
[1:08:09] Speaker 1: into like you know, clips for shareable social media. You know,
[1:08:12] Speaker 1: there's so many companies that are working on that. I
[1:08:14] Speaker 1: don't think it's perfect just yet. I think that you
[1:08:16] Speaker 1: still need that human touch with some of this stuff.
[1:08:18] Speaker 1: But it's definitely happening. And you know, AI is just
[1:08:22] Speaker 1: it's such a force in everything these days. So where's
[1:08:25] Speaker 1: the event happening and can anyone get involved in this
[1:08:27] Speaker 1: still or what?
[1:08:28] Speaker 8: Yeah, well, the missions are definitely closed up. We had
[1:08:31] Speaker 8: over one thousand registrations. We've got over five hundred actually
[1:08:35] Speaker 8: here actively participating and at that one two one seven
[1:08:38] Speaker 8: second street here in Santa Monica just stepped away from
[1:08:41] Speaker 8: the big DC group Basic tem Z and so we're
[1:08:44] Speaker 8: kicking off LA Tech Week with this huge hakathon to
[1:08:47] Speaker 8: really help a flag in Los Angeles to show people
[1:08:50] Speaker 8: that you know, there's a you know, we're more than
[1:08:53] Speaker 8: we're an innovation capital too, not just San Francisco or places.
[1:08:56] Speaker 2: Like New Jersey.
[1:08:58] Speaker 1: Absolutely awesome is their website people can go to to
[1:09:02] Speaker 1: learn more.
[1:09:03] Speaker 8: Sure, you can just go to join AI dot la.
[1:09:06] Speaker 8: Find out more about our ailate nonprofit that's hosted this
[1:09:09] Speaker 8: whole hackathon.
[1:09:11] Speaker 1: Join a JOINAI dot l A.
[1:09:14] Speaker 8: Correct join AI dot l A and you'll find more
[1:09:17] Speaker 8: about the organization and the pacabon.
[1:09:19] Speaker 1: All Right, Todd and Santa Monica, thanks so much for
[1:09:22] Speaker 1: checking in with us. Appreciate that.
[1:09:24] Speaker 8: Thanks so much.
[1:09:25] Speaker 1: All Right, good luck with that. Very exciting. I've seen
[1:09:28] Speaker 1: a couple of hackathons in my years, and it's cool.
[1:09:30] Speaker 1: People come up with like, you know, they spend a
[1:09:32] Speaker 1: certain amount of time, let's say twenty four hours just
[1:09:35] Speaker 1: working and they got to get a project from idea
[1:09:38] Speaker 1: to execution and fruition might not be fully complete, but
[1:09:42] Speaker 1: you know, they try to get the best they can
[1:09:45] Speaker 1: for what, you know, the time that they have. And
[1:09:46] Speaker 1: it's pretty cool because people, you know, they come together,
[1:09:48] Speaker 1: they may not know each other sometimes and they solve
[1:09:50] Speaker 1: these problems that they you know uh have been considering
[1:09:54] Speaker 1: with technology. It's pretty neat eighty eight rich one on
[1:09:57] Speaker 1: one eight eight eight seven four to two one zero
[1:10:00] Speaker 1: one again the website rich on tech dot tv. I'll
[1:10:03] Speaker 1: put that website that Todd mentioned in the show notes.
[1:10:05] Speaker 1: Just hit the light bulb there to get those TikTok
[1:10:10] Speaker 1: I know, broken record, TikTok, TikTok, TikTok. I saw somewhere
[1:10:13] Speaker 1: that TikTok has a countdown clock that you can see
[1:10:19] Speaker 1: when when they're expected to be Let's see TikTok countdown
[1:10:24] Speaker 1: to ban when they're expected. Oh here it is us
[1:10:27] Speaker 1: TikTok ban countdown. Oh gosh, there's like some sort of
[1:10:31] Speaker 1: clock I saw on social media that you can countdown
[1:10:34] Speaker 1: time or oh here it is TikTok countdown. Now that's
[1:10:37] Speaker 1: not the right one. Well this will work. But TikTok
[1:10:40] Speaker 1: countdown dot com ninety nine days, nine hours, five minutes,
[1:10:44] Speaker 1: four seconds. With the ninety day extension, you've got one
[1:10:47] Speaker 1: hundred and eighty nine days. So if you're making a
[1:10:48] Speaker 1: living on TikTok, this is the this is the countdown
[1:10:51] Speaker 1: to watch now. I I don't know I will get banned.
[1:10:55] Speaker 1: I'm not sure and I've already given my opinion too
[1:10:58] Speaker 1: many times in the show about electric cars. I'll save
[1:11:01] Speaker 1: mine on TikTok. Let me just tell you what the
[1:11:04] Speaker 1: what's happening against TikTok. Fourteen states have filed a lawsuit
[1:11:07] Speaker 1: against TikTok for violating consumer protection laws. They say this
[1:11:11] Speaker 1: platform is addictive, particularly for young users. I don't think
[1:11:15] Speaker 1: anyone could argue with that. They say that TikTok uses
[1:11:18] Speaker 1: manipulative features to maximize user engagement, including beauty filters. They
[1:11:24] Speaker 1: think that harm self esteem, especially for teens, auto play
[1:11:28] Speaker 1: and endless scrolling. There's no way to turn off the AutoPlay,
[1:11:31] Speaker 1: notifications that make you want to come back, likes and
[1:11:35] Speaker 1: comments all over the place, and time sensitive features that
[1:11:39] Speaker 1: exploit a fear of missing out. What do they want
[1:11:42] Speaker 1: them to do? Change their ways? Sixty three percent of
[1:11:45] Speaker 1: Americans thirteen to seventeen use TikTok, seventeen percent reporting they
[1:11:50] Speaker 1: use it almost constantly. This is rich on Tech. Welcome
[1:11:54] Speaker 1: back to rich on Tech. Rich Demiro here hanging out
[1:11:57] Speaker 1: with you talking technology at triple eight rich one on one.
[1:12:01] Speaker 1: That's eight eight eight seven four to two four one
[1:12:04] Speaker 1: zero one. The website Rich on tech dot TV. As always,
[1:12:08] Speaker 1: Thanks for your emails, your comments, your questions. I do
[1:12:12] Speaker 1: read them all.
[1:12:13] Speaker 8: Uh.
[1:12:14] Speaker 1: Special guests with me, my brother Justin, Justin, Welcome to
[1:12:18] Speaker 1: the show. Thanks for having me on. You're a repeat
[1:12:21] Speaker 1: guest at this point. And I was talking about Microcenter
[1:12:25] Speaker 1: earlier in the show. Yep, I used to work there.
[1:12:28] Speaker 1: I just realized that I was sitting the wrong way
[1:12:30] Speaker 1: to talk to you because I set up the studio.
[1:12:34] Speaker 1: We're on a remote show this this week, and I
[1:12:36] Speaker 1: set up the studio and I just realized where I
[1:12:38] Speaker 1: set up. Justin is completely like he's just looking at
[1:12:41] Speaker 1: my back. And I didn't even think about that when
[1:12:43] Speaker 1: I was setting this up. But yeah, you worked at Microcenter.
[1:12:46] Speaker 1: I did. Yeah, I was in the BYO PC section.
[1:12:49] Speaker 1: And so did you know a lot about you've built
[1:12:51] Speaker 1: your own PC?
[1:12:51] Speaker 8: Right?
[1:12:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, a couple. So what components you need like a motherboard, yeah, motherboard,
[1:12:57] Speaker 1: a processor, BRAM, a storage, some kind of stories like
[1:13:00] Speaker 1: an SSD. You need a power supply, a case, some fans,
[1:13:06] Speaker 1: and somewhere to plug it in. Sounds pretty easy. And
[1:13:08] Speaker 1: a monitor. Yeah, you just fit the shapes into the
[1:13:11] Speaker 1: slots that they go into. That's pretty much it. Now,
[1:13:14] Speaker 1: what would people come in there, because you know, people
[1:13:15] Speaker 1: that are building their own computer. Some of them may
[1:13:18] Speaker 1: not have known everything, but a lot of them like
[1:13:20] Speaker 1: kind of know their stuff. So were they trying to
[1:13:22] Speaker 1: like quiz you like, what would be the interaction? Oh? Yeah,
[1:13:25] Speaker 1: the smart customers were the worst because they would just
[1:13:29] Speaker 1: ask me. They would just test my knowledge as much
[1:13:31] Speaker 1: as they could. That's like this show sometime. Yeah, but yeah,
[1:13:35] Speaker 1: they would ask all kinds of questions. You know, you'd
[1:13:38] Speaker 1: get everybody. You get somebody who just wants you to
[1:13:40] Speaker 1: build the computer for them, and I'm like, all right, great,
[1:13:42] Speaker 1: here's all the most expensive parts, and you commission I did? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
[1:13:48] Speaker 1: everybody works in our commission. So the customer brings up
[1:13:52] Speaker 1: the part that they like, and then you slap your
[1:13:55] Speaker 1: sticker with the barcode on it. And then when they
[1:13:57] Speaker 1: check out, they bring up the part in the barcode
[1:13:59] Speaker 1: and you get you know, the commissions calculated from that.
[1:14:03] Speaker 1: Oh wow, interesting? Yeah, And how long did you did
[1:14:05] Speaker 1: you do that? I think I was there for just
[1:14:08] Speaker 1: about a year. Oh that's it. Yeah, Oh wow, did
[1:14:13] Speaker 1: I think of so much longer? Okay, So I was
[1:14:14] Speaker 1: talking about the idea of when I was growing up,
[1:14:17] Speaker 1: and for you a lesser extent, you're a little younger,
[1:14:20] Speaker 1: but you know this idea of all these places you
[1:14:22] Speaker 1: could go to the store, like these electronics stores like
[1:14:26] Speaker 1: for me, you know comp USA and you know before
[1:14:29] Speaker 1: Best Buy right right, like like this story yesterday when
[1:14:32] Speaker 1: I was walking through the aisles. I mean, they sell
[1:14:34] Speaker 1: stuff that you just can't get in a Best Buy,
[1:14:36] Speaker 1: like little tiny pliers and like metal fittings and stuff
[1:14:39] Speaker 1: like that that's like really nerdy. Yeah, Microcenter is probably
[1:14:43] Speaker 1: one of the last places you can get anything like that.
[1:14:45] Speaker 1: I know, like radio shack back in the day used
[1:14:47] Speaker 1: to have all kinds of little knickknacks and you know,
[1:14:50] Speaker 1: little wiry parts that you'd used to connect a circuit
[1:14:53] Speaker 1: board to something else. And nowadays it's just micro Center.
[1:14:56] Speaker 1: I mean they're the only game in town other than
[1:14:59] Speaker 1: small little boutique shops that might sell electronics parts. But yeah,
[1:15:04] Speaker 1: I mean it's great. You got to respect them for
[1:15:06] Speaker 1: it because they they're a really good business. I mean,
[1:15:10] Speaker 1: they have a lot of good parts they have. Let's
[1:15:13] Speaker 1: not turn this into an ad for Microcenter. I mean
[1:15:15] Speaker 1: it's great that we have them, but okay, let's I'm
[1:15:17] Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna get to some emails here. Gary. We
[1:15:20] Speaker 1: had a question about speakers and longevity. Gary wrote in
[1:15:23] Speaker 1: to say one of the main things that wears out
[1:15:25] Speaker 1: on older acoustic suspension speakers is the foam surround for
[1:15:29] Speaker 1: the wolfer. Over time, they just fall apart and turn
[1:15:32] Speaker 1: to dust. The good news is that the surrounds can
[1:15:34] Speaker 1: be replaced, either by the owner or by a company
[1:15:37] Speaker 1: that does this. There are lots of YouTube videos showing
[1:15:40] Speaker 1: how to do this. I know that older KLH Acoustics
[1:15:45] Speaker 1: and other brands use these foam surrounds. I'm not sure
[1:15:47] Speaker 1: if the callers KLH uses these or not. If wolfers
[1:15:51] Speaker 1: are using rubber surrounds, they will last much longer. Let's see.
[1:15:55] Speaker 1: Let's take Oh, you know Steve, Steve still on line one.
[1:15:58] Speaker 1: We should get to Steve. It's been a while. You
[1:15:59] Speaker 1: want to say a call with me? Sure? All right?
[1:16:02] Speaker 1: Steve online one hammett Oh Kim is on with him. Okay, okay,
[1:16:08] Speaker 1: Well maybe she was telling him that we were gonna
[1:16:10] Speaker 1: come take him. But okay, well until that, tell me, Bobo,
[1:16:13] Speaker 1: tell just bring him on when he's writing. I'll read
[1:16:15] Speaker 1: another email here. Uh, Sandra says, I have a smart
[1:16:20] Speaker 1: TV that isn't set up to deliver Netflix. If I
[1:16:23] Speaker 1: purchase a firestick, is that all I need? Thank you?
[1:16:26] Speaker 1: Justin you want to take that one? Sure? Yeah, you
[1:16:29] Speaker 1: know nowadays a lot of smart TVs, a lot of TV.
[1:16:32] Speaker 1: You almost can't get a TV without the smart stuff
[1:16:34] Speaker 1: built into it. But if you do get a TV
[1:16:38] Speaker 1: without it, yeah, I would say a Kindle fire t sorry,
[1:16:42] Speaker 1: an Amazon fire Stick, fire TV, one of those devices,
[1:16:46] Speaker 1: or even Roku personally. What's your favorite? You like the Roku? Huh?
[1:16:49] Speaker 1: I do like Roku? Yeah? You know, it's really just
[1:16:52] Speaker 1: they all do the same thing. Ultimately, you know, pick
[1:16:54] Speaker 1: whatever suits your budget and has the features that you like.
[1:16:58] Speaker 1: I just I used a fire TV for a while
[1:17:01] Speaker 1: and then switched over to Roku because it was a
[1:17:04] Speaker 1: bit more of a powerful device and it has its
[1:17:07] Speaker 1: own proprietary interface. I just found that I liked it
[1:17:11] Speaker 1: a bit better. So I do I think Roku? I
[1:17:13] Speaker 1: mean because Roku is first and foremost a streaming device
[1:17:17] Speaker 1: company and a platform. I think that they put a
[1:17:20] Speaker 1: lot of effort into their platform, whereas with Amazon, and
[1:17:23] Speaker 1: they are a big platform and Amazon's one of like
[1:17:25] Speaker 1: the top three. It's you know, I think they do
[1:17:27] Speaker 1: a lot of other things, right, fire is just one
[1:17:29] Speaker 1: of those things, and I do like the fire I
[1:17:31] Speaker 1: think the fire Cube is probably the most powerful device
[1:17:34] Speaker 1: that they have, but it's also the most expensive. But
[1:17:36] Speaker 1: I'm surprised, Sandra that you're able to get a smart
[1:17:39] Speaker 1: TV without Netflix, because the idea of a smart TV
[1:17:42] Speaker 1: is that it has Netflix built in. But Firestick, you know,
[1:17:46] Speaker 1: I would say a lot of people go with the
[1:17:47] Speaker 1: fire Stick just because it's very inexpensive, and that's what
[1:17:50] Speaker 1: people like about it. All Right, do we have the caller? Nope,
[1:17:53] Speaker 1: we don't have the caller. Okay, let's go to Jamie. Sorry,
[1:17:57] Speaker 1: himI in a Los Angeles line. Too high, you're on
[1:18:00] Speaker 1: with Rich.
[1:18:03] Speaker 11: Hi, thanks for taking my call.
[1:18:06] Speaker 1: Absolutely, what can we help you with?
[1:18:08] Speaker 11: Yeah, So, my wife and I are in the market
[1:18:10] Speaker 11: for an outdoor camera system and we're looking more for
[1:18:14] Speaker 11: a wired thing within the five six hundred dollars budget area.
[1:18:20] Speaker 11: I'm having a hard time filtering through all the different
[1:18:22] Speaker 11: reviews of what's good and what isn't, sort of just
[1:18:24] Speaker 11: looking for some general advice. One of the brands I've
[1:18:28] Speaker 11: noticed is like real Link versus whys And you know,
[1:18:32] Speaker 11: I just can't tell the difference between.
[1:18:33] Speaker 4: Any of them.
[1:18:35] Speaker 1: What are you looking for? Like what's important to you?
[1:18:37] Speaker 1: You want wired?
[1:18:39] Speaker 11: Yes, a wired system would I don't want to have
[1:18:41] Speaker 11: to worry about battery life or anything like that.
[1:18:44] Speaker 1: Well, typically the wise cameras, I mean you can plug
[1:18:47] Speaker 1: them in and a lot of the cameras you can
[1:18:49] Speaker 1: get with Solar. I mean, how many cameras are we talking?
[1:18:52] Speaker 1: Are you covering? Like do you need like a Lorax system,
[1:18:54] Speaker 1: Like it's like, you know, fifteen cameras on every angle
[1:18:57] Speaker 1: of your house, or like a Swan system or just
[1:19:00] Speaker 1: a standard like you need a couple of cameras here
[1:19:03] Speaker 1: and there, but you just want them pluging.
[1:19:04] Speaker 11: A couple of cameras like maybe three to four.
[1:19:07] Speaker 1: Okay, And do you do you have any problem with
[1:19:10] Speaker 1: like the monthly fees because a lot of them want
[1:19:12] Speaker 1: monthly fees.
[1:19:12] Speaker 11: Now, ideally if we can find one without a subscription,
[1:19:16] Speaker 11: but you know, we'd have to see what the benefits
[1:19:19] Speaker 11: of the subscription would be.
[1:19:20] Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I think when the first thing that comes
[1:19:23] Speaker 1: to mind with no subscription is U fee eu f y,
[1:19:29] Speaker 1: I'm you know, and you with that one, I'm just
[1:19:31] Speaker 1: not sure about the plug in aspect of it. You
[1:19:34] Speaker 1: would have to you know, you'd have to get probably
[1:19:37] Speaker 1: solar with those I like. I mean, I personally like
[1:19:40] Speaker 1: Whys because they're cheap and they work. I also have
[1:19:43] Speaker 1: some Why's in my house, and yeah, they're very cheap.
[1:19:47] Speaker 1: They work, you plug them in, you point them, they
[1:19:49] Speaker 1: give you notifications. They're a little bit finicky sometimes I
[1:19:52] Speaker 1: will say, if you want to go, you know, that's
[1:19:56] Speaker 1: that's more of the plug and play. Very easy, get
[1:19:59] Speaker 1: up and go. And they have an SD card slot,
[1:20:01] Speaker 1: which I like, right, yeah, so you can roll back
[1:20:03] Speaker 1: the you know, roll back the tapes and see continuous footage.
[1:20:07] Speaker 1: They support you know, I think up to like a
[1:20:09] Speaker 1: five twelve gig card and you can go back, you know,
[1:20:13] Speaker 1: several days. I have two six. I think it's a
[1:20:15] Speaker 1: thirty two gig card on the on the model I have,
[1:20:19] Speaker 1: I believe it's max of thirty two. Oh okay, but
[1:20:21] Speaker 1: I you know, you'd have to look at that, look
[1:20:23] Speaker 1: at the specs that. Yeah, I do know with mine,
[1:20:24] Speaker 1: I can go back up to about six days of footage.
[1:20:28] Speaker 1: So yeah, and what I like about the Whys is
[1:20:32] Speaker 1: that you have that option. Now the only thing the
[1:20:34] Speaker 1: downside of not paying for a subscription if you're on
[1:20:37] Speaker 1: the Wisecam or any of these cameras and they're using
[1:20:40] Speaker 1: local storage is if someone steals the camera, they've stolen
[1:20:44] Speaker 1: your footage. So that's the downside of not having it
[1:20:46] Speaker 1: go to the cloud immediately. Now with the Wisecam, I
[1:20:49] Speaker 1: do believe you will get just the the frame, like
[1:20:54] Speaker 1: a snapshot, will go up to the cloud for free.
[1:20:56] Speaker 1: But I think that's it, Like, that's the only thing
[1:20:58] Speaker 1: you would have. Like let's say you know someone did
[1:21:00] Speaker 1: something and you wanted the footage of it and they
[1:21:03] Speaker 1: took the camera on your app, you might just have
[1:21:05] Speaker 1: the frame of them, like their face maybe, but that's it.
[1:21:09] Speaker 1: So that's, you know, that's something to think of and
[1:21:11] Speaker 1: keep in mind. So I have a combination of Ring,
[1:21:15] Speaker 1: Google cameras, the Nest cameras, and the Wise cameras. Again,
[1:21:19] Speaker 1: the whys are just the most simple kind of like,
[1:21:22] Speaker 1: and I've had all these cameras, by the way, for
[1:21:24] Speaker 1: like years and years, so they do work for a
[1:21:26] Speaker 1: substantial amount of time. I would say Ring probably has
[1:21:29] Speaker 1: the most kind of like subscription based stuff. So if
[1:21:33] Speaker 1: you're trying to avoid subscriptions pretty much. Ring cameras are
[1:21:36] Speaker 1: almost exclusively streaming unless you have any sort of subscription
[1:21:41] Speaker 1: with Ring where it records to the cloud. But UFI,
[1:21:44] Speaker 1: I know a lot of people. I have not personally
[1:21:45] Speaker 1: used the UFI cameras, but I know a lot of
[1:21:47] Speaker 1: people like those for the fact that there is not
[1:21:50] Speaker 1: a major subscription pushed on people with those cameras. One
[1:21:54] Speaker 1: of my friends uses UFI and they like them a lot.
[1:21:57] Speaker 1: There you go, Yeah, they have them set up everywhere. Yeah,
[1:22:01] Speaker 1: no subscription. All right, himI, thanks so much for the
[1:22:04] Speaker 1: call today. Appreciate it. Okay, how much long do we
[1:22:10] Speaker 1: have before the break? We got We got a minute
[1:22:12] Speaker 1: to do it. Okay, we got a minute. All right.
[1:22:14] Speaker 1: Let me just tell you real quick. I've been testing
[1:22:16] Speaker 1: the Apple Watch Series ten, and I will tell you
[1:22:19] Speaker 1: if you have a Series six or below, it's probably
[1:22:22] Speaker 1: a great update. Series ten is thinner, it's lighter, easier
[1:22:26] Speaker 1: to wear during sleep. It's got the sleep apnea, although
[1:22:29] Speaker 1: you can also get that on the Series nine and
[1:22:31] Speaker 1: the Ultra two, I believe, not just the regular. It's
[1:22:35] Speaker 1: got this great polish black color which looks more expensive
[1:22:39] Speaker 1: than it is. It's the first time they've had this
[1:22:41] Speaker 1: polished black on the base model. It's got faster charging,
[1:22:44] Speaker 1: it's got a larger screen. You can listen to music
[1:22:47] Speaker 1: and audio through the speaker, which is the first time
[1:22:49] Speaker 1: you could do that on an Apple Watch before. You
[1:22:52] Speaker 1: can only take calls and talk to Siri. The Vitals
[1:22:55] Speaker 1: app is really cool. It's like going to the doctor
[1:22:57] Speaker 1: every night overnight. When you wake up, it tells you
[1:23:00] Speaker 1: if any of your indicators are out of range, like
[1:23:03] Speaker 1: your heart or your breathing. It's really really cool, and
[1:23:06] Speaker 1: it's got on risk translation, so if you are in
[1:23:09] Speaker 1: a different country and you need to translate feature, you
[1:23:11] Speaker 1: can use that without a connection. Three hundred and ninety
[1:23:14] Speaker 1: nine dollars Go Cellular if you are a runner and
[1:23:17] Speaker 1: you want to run with this thing without your phone nearby.

[1:24:04] Speaker 1: How you doing great to be here? Do you have
[1:24:07] Speaker 1: a favorite Jersey artist? We've been playing Jersey artists all
[1:24:11] Speaker 1: all day so far. Do you have one? I guess
[1:24:14] Speaker 1: Bruce Springsteen? Oh wow, Bruce? All right, there you go
[1:24:18] Speaker 1: as a classic? Have we Bobo? I don't think we
[1:24:20] Speaker 1: played any Bruce, did we nice? Okay? Well we have time. Yeah.
[1:24:26] Speaker 1: It's weird because I did a search of like Jersey artists.
[1:24:28] Speaker 1: I don't think he came up, which is like he's
[1:24:31] Speaker 1: getting robbed and the Google results that's that's like bon
[1:24:34] Speaker 1: Jovi came up, like no matter what, Whitney Houston, Dion
[1:24:37] Speaker 1: Warwick and a whole bunch of other wrong people on AI.
[1:24:42] Speaker 1: But I don't think the what are they called Bruce
[1:24:44] Speaker 1: Springsteen the Boss? Sure he comes up first when I
[1:24:48] Speaker 1: searched for Okay, well maybe I missed that. All right,
[1:24:51] Speaker 1: let's go to line one. Jerry in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. Jerry,
[1:24:55] Speaker 1: We've never been closer. What's up? What can I help
[1:24:57] Speaker 1: you with?
[1:24:58] Speaker 9: Welcome back to the land of Green Pizza.
[1:25:00] Speaker 1: Rich, Thank you. I did have a slice and it
[1:25:03] Speaker 1: was actually really horrible, but I won't talk about that,
[1:25:06] Speaker 1: So go ahead. What can I help you with? I
[1:25:07] Speaker 1: like Jerry, already, take a pizza back the kid.
[1:25:10] Speaker 9: She deserves it.
[1:25:12] Speaker 1: She deserves a lot.
[1:25:14] Speaker 9: I have a local radio stations here, you know, on
[1:25:17] Speaker 9: my computer, and it's run actually it's run by the
[1:25:21] Speaker 9: high school, my local high school. They played great music
[1:25:23] Speaker 9: from the seventies and eighties, nineties. Then all of a
[1:25:27] Speaker 9: sudden they change the URL. I can't get on my
[1:25:30] Speaker 9: Android bone anymore with the same uver L. How do
[1:25:34] Speaker 9: I do about sniffing at this URL so I can
[1:25:39] Speaker 9: play it with my app on my bone.
[1:25:43] Speaker 1: There's a there's a Chrome extension that will help you
[1:25:46] Speaker 1: sniff it out. It's called Bulk Media Downloader, and you
[1:25:51] Speaker 1: install it on Chrome and you go to that website.
[1:25:55] Speaker 1: You tap the extension and it will give you every
[1:25:58] Speaker 1: single thing that is going on on that website and
[1:26:02] Speaker 1: you can filter by applications image, video, audio, archive, document, tab,
[1:26:07] Speaker 1: whatever it is. And so I just went to like
[1:26:10] Speaker 1: a random streaming radio station and there's a whole bunch
[1:26:13] Speaker 1: of you know, streams that you can see on there.
[1:26:17] Speaker 1: So that is what it's called bulk media downloader. I
[1:26:21] Speaker 1: don't know, you know, I've used this to sniff thinks out.
[1:26:25] Speaker 1: I don't know what you would do to, you know,
[1:26:28] Speaker 1: with that URL once you have it, but I imagine
[1:26:30] Speaker 1: you might be able to pop it into some sort
[1:26:32] Speaker 1: of app or something that you want to use on
[1:26:34] Speaker 1: your phone, you know, since it's Android, I'm sure there's
[1:26:37] Speaker 1: lots of them that would allow you to play that.
[1:26:40] Speaker 1: But that's what it's called bulk media downloader. And I
[1:26:42] Speaker 1: don't let's see, do they have a website. I don't
[1:26:44] Speaker 1: know if they have a website or just a Chrome extension.
[1:26:48] Speaker 1: Let's see here, trying to find a fit. Yeah, it
[1:26:51] Speaker 1: looks like it's just a Chrome extension. So I would
[1:26:53] Speaker 1: just search for that and you should find it. It looks
[1:26:56] Speaker 1: like the uh, I don't know what would you call it,
[1:26:58] Speaker 1: like a navigation mark or something the you know, anyway,
[1:27:02] Speaker 1: but that's what I look for. Jerry. See if that
[1:27:04] Speaker 1: works for you.
[1:27:05] Speaker 9: Thank you much, have some more pizza.
[1:27:07] Speaker 1: All right, goodbye, report back, report back on the website.
[1:27:11] Speaker 1: Rich on tech dot TV. All right, justin, let's talk
[1:27:13] Speaker 1: about this notebook LM feature. So we're here in person
[1:27:17] Speaker 1: talking on the radio show. But a lot of folks
[1:27:21] Speaker 1: are talking about this AI powered audio overview, and so
[1:27:26] Speaker 1: it's from Google. It's from a feature called Notebook LM.
[1:27:29] Speaker 1: If you're not familiar with Notebook LM, it's basically your
[1:27:31] Speaker 1: own personal chat GPT. You can upload as much as
[1:27:35] Speaker 1: many documents as you want to this Notebook LM, and
[1:27:38] Speaker 1: then you can search through them using Google AI. But
[1:27:42] Speaker 1: this other thing they can do is they can now
[1:27:45] Speaker 1: generate an AI hosted basically podcast that has a discussion
[1:27:50] Speaker 1: of your material. So let's play a couple thirty seconds
[1:27:53] Speaker 1: of this. I uploaded my review of the I think
[1:27:57] Speaker 1: it was the Samsung Watch Ultra. I just took the
[1:27:59] Speaker 1: text my review, uploaded it, and then in like a
[1:28:02] Speaker 1: minute or two, it came up with this audio. Let's
[1:28:04] Speaker 1: hear it.
[1:28:04] Speaker 7: All right, everybody buckle up, because today we are diving
[1:28:08] Speaker 7: deep into the world of Samsung health tech.
[1:28:11] Speaker 1: It's gonna be fun.
[1:28:12] Speaker 7: With their shiny new Galaxy Watch lineup and the game changer,
[1:28:16] Speaker 7: the Samsung.
[1:28:16] Speaker 1: Smart Ring definitely game changer.
[1:28:18] Speaker 7: We are uncovering all the juicy details from tech guru
[1:28:22] Speaker 7: Rich Demiro's latest review.
[1:28:24] Speaker 1: Love his reviews, he always digs out.
[1:28:26] Speaker 7: No, absolutely, and we're going.
[1:28:27] Speaker 1: To dissect it all for you today. Awesome. Can't wait.
[1:28:30] Speaker 7: So Samsung is really stepping up their game this year.
[1:28:33] Speaker 1: Into two hosts are completely AI generated, justin what's your reaction?
[1:28:41] Speaker 1: So the first thing I noticed is it sounded just
[1:28:44] Speaker 1: like one of those podcasts where you have the one
[1:28:46] Speaker 1: host who has all the substance in the content and
[1:28:49] Speaker 1: the other one just goes like uh huh yeah, oh definitely, sure, yeah,
[1:28:53] Speaker 1: I hear you see what you did there. But it's
[1:28:58] Speaker 1: really okay. So here's what I think is interesting this.
[1:29:00] Speaker 1: I don't think it's perfect. Obviously you kind of got
[1:29:02] Speaker 1: onto that where the guy was just like, uh huh,
[1:29:04] Speaker 1: he's great. Sure, he was like a supportive character. I
[1:29:07] Speaker 1: think obviously it depends on you know, every single one
[1:29:09] Speaker 1: of these is going to be different. But it's kind
[1:29:12] Speaker 1: of scary, like they sound pretty good. It's taking the
[1:29:15] Speaker 1: information and it runs with it. Obviously, it has that
[1:29:18] Speaker 1: same AI issue of like hallucinating and all that stuff.
[1:29:21] Speaker 1: But this is like day one. Yeah, day one. I
[1:29:24] Speaker 1: mean if you didn't tell me they were AI, I
[1:29:26] Speaker 1: might not have even thought that. Yeah, and I can
[1:29:29] Speaker 1: only imagine where this tech is going to be in
[1:29:31] Speaker 1: a year from now. Yeah. So there you have it. Notebook,
[1:29:34] Speaker 1: LM Audio Overview. What I think is really cool about
[1:29:37] Speaker 1: this is for learning. If you are trying to study
[1:29:39] Speaker 1: for an exam, you want to learn like a complex topic,
[1:29:42] Speaker 1: you put your information into this notebook and then you
[1:29:44] Speaker 1: make a podcast and you listen to it on the go.
[1:29:47] Speaker 1: Helps you understand it in a new and different way.
[1:29:49] Speaker 1: All right. Coming up, we're going to talk to Scott
[1:29:52] Speaker 1: Baldwin about his new app called front Pack for Athletes.
[1:29:57] Speaker 1: There it is, there's the boss. All right. Welcome back
[1:30:01] Speaker 1: to rich on Tech. Rich DeMuro here hanging out with you,
[1:30:04] Speaker 1: talking technology. The website for the show rich on Tech
[1:30:09] Speaker 1: dot TV. So much good information giving out on this show,
[1:30:13] Speaker 1: not necessarily through me, but just in general, like the
[1:30:15] Speaker 1: community that we have here of people that know stuff
[1:30:18] Speaker 1: and add to the show and ask questions that I
[1:30:21] Speaker 1: think we can all take away from My brother's joining
[1:30:25] Speaker 1: me as well, Justin is here hanging out because I
[1:30:27] Speaker 1: am in New Jersey. My hometown. Is that my hometown
[1:30:30] Speaker 1: or my home state? I say home state, home state?
[1:30:34] Speaker 1: And then joining me now is Scott Baldwin. Scott and
[1:30:37] Speaker 1: I have worked together for years on the PR side.
[1:30:41] Speaker 1: Now he has branched off and he's actually starting up
[1:30:43] Speaker 1: his own app called front Pack. This is a social
[1:30:46] Speaker 1: network for endurance athletes. Scott, welcome to the show.
[1:30:52] Speaker 12: Yeah, Hey, Rich, good to be here, and shout out
[1:30:56] Speaker 12: to New Jersey. I am also a fellow New Jersey
[1:30:58] Speaker 12: in so yeah, how do I.
[1:31:01] Speaker 1: Not know that? Look at yeah? See weeah three New Jersey.
[1:31:05] Speaker 1: Cool here. So, so tell me about Okay, so you
[1:31:09] Speaker 1: went from PR to creating an app? I mean number one?
[1:31:13] Speaker 1: What's that been? Like? I mean, is it? Everyone's always
[1:31:15] Speaker 1: asking me like, Rich, how do I make an app?
[1:31:16] Speaker 1: How do I make an app? I mean it's tough,
[1:31:18] Speaker 1: isn't it? Yeah? Absolutely?
[1:31:21] Speaker 9: So?
[1:31:23] Speaker 12: Is it something that I ever thought I would do?
[1:31:26] Speaker 3: No?
[1:31:26] Speaker 1: But here I am so.
[1:31:28] Speaker 12: Like you said, I was in R Communications for twenty
[1:31:31] Speaker 12: years and I had this idea and there was a
[1:31:34] Speaker 12: market need that I saw way back in January. And
[1:31:38] Speaker 12: the market need was there there was no social network
[1:31:42] Speaker 12: for endurance athletes. So it's something I actually created as
[1:31:47] Speaker 12: a first a newsletter and then quickly I brought you know,
[1:31:51] Speaker 12: all those worlds together. It quickly grew to a few
[1:31:54] Speaker 12: thousand subscribers and a lot of people were messaging me,
[1:31:58] Speaker 12: a lot of run club, cycling clubs. They were saying, hey, like,
[1:32:01] Speaker 12: I think you're onto something and this is really cool.
[1:32:05] Speaker 12: Do you have any desire to take it a step further? So, again,
[1:32:09] Speaker 12: like I said, there was a market need, there's nothing
[1:32:11] Speaker 12: out there. So I actually started the the app creation
[1:32:16] Speaker 12: process about five months ago.
[1:32:19] Speaker 1: It took a long time.
[1:32:20] Speaker 12: I evaluated the things that people wanted, and I also
[1:32:25] Speaker 12: interviewed a lot of my own newsletter subscribers. And then, yeah,
[1:32:31] Speaker 12: I would say it is very difficult. You have to
[1:32:33] Speaker 12: find the right developers and it takes a lot of interviewing,
[1:32:36] Speaker 12: which I think, you know, coming from my background before,
[1:32:40] Speaker 12: I'm pretty good at interviewing people and making sure we
[1:32:44] Speaker 12: have the right fit.
[1:32:46] Speaker 1: So you didn't You didn't code the app yourself, Like
[1:32:48] Speaker 1: you weren't sitting there learning like Swift or whatever coding language.
[1:32:52] Speaker 12: Yeah, exactly. I think if that was the road that
[1:32:56] Speaker 12: I went down. I don't know if we would be
[1:32:58] Speaker 12: having this conversation quite yet.
[1:33:00] Speaker 1: So explain to me what front pack. The website is
[1:33:03] Speaker 1: frontpacksports dot com. What is what is the app for?
[1:33:06] Speaker 1: What does it help people do? Yeah?
[1:33:09] Speaker 12: Absolutely, So it's a social network for endurance athletes by
[1:33:13] Speaker 12: endurance athletes. So it's a it's a place for real
[1:33:16] Speaker 12: people to connect, motivate. Storytell uh, I'm not sure if
[1:33:23] Speaker 12: you've ever done a five k or a half marathon
[1:33:26] Speaker 12: or anything, but.
[1:33:27] Speaker 1: I think yes, I have.
[1:33:29] Speaker 12: Yes, So you understand when you are at the starting line,
[1:33:32] Speaker 12: you might actually be super nervous, and you you you're
[1:33:36] Speaker 12: not sure if you're training. You know you did your
[1:33:38] Speaker 12: training correctly, but then there's always that person that's standing
[1:33:42] Speaker 12: next to you, and before the race or after the race,
[1:33:45] Speaker 12: you get talking to them and you find out like, oh,
[1:33:48] Speaker 12: this person might be in the same boat, or oh
[1:33:50] Speaker 12: this person has the same career as I. But once
[1:33:52] Speaker 12: that gun goes off, you like you never see that
[1:33:55] Speaker 12: person ever again. So front pack, you know, it's the
[1:33:59] Speaker 12: answer to just connecting with real people who are like
[1:34:03] Speaker 12: minded and like you. It's a way to motivate and
[1:34:07] Speaker 12: push yourself to be even better. And not only that,
[1:34:11] Speaker 12: but you know, it's focused on the sports side of things.
[1:34:15] Speaker 12: But I think quite often everybody uses LinkedIn, but LinkedIn
[1:34:20] Speaker 12: doesn't really show you your hobbies or interests. And with
[1:34:23] Speaker 12: so many people being laid off in the last year,
[1:34:26] Speaker 12: front Pack not only when you sign up you create
[1:34:29] Speaker 12: your profile, but you can also connect with people based
[1:34:33] Speaker 12: on your profession, so you're connecting based on interest. But
[1:34:38] Speaker 12: also you know, you might be in in tech sales
[1:34:42] Speaker 12: for example.
[1:34:44] Speaker 1: Interesting, so you can so basically you can. You know,
[1:34:48] Speaker 1: it's almost like a social network in real life where
[1:34:51] Speaker 1: you have the shared interest of doing whatever you're doing,
[1:34:54] Speaker 1: whether it's running, cycling. And also you may be in
[1:34:57] Speaker 1: the same business or maybe not. But it's kind of
[1:35:00] Speaker 1: like extending that network through sports.
[1:35:04] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[1:35:04] Speaker 12: Absolutely, And I think the thing, you know, most of
[1:35:09] Speaker 12: us we grow up playing sports, but unless you go
[1:35:12] Speaker 12: on to play sports in college or beyond, you know,
[1:35:15] Speaker 12: you have to give up something that was such a
[1:35:18] Speaker 12: big part of your life because you need to go
[1:35:19] Speaker 12: be a professional, and you need to go work, and
[1:35:22] Speaker 12: you need to go you know, you know, you got
[1:35:25] Speaker 12: to go make money or have a family. So I
[1:35:27] Speaker 12: think the great thing about it is we all still
[1:35:30] Speaker 12: have that passion within us and it just because you're
[1:35:33] Speaker 12: a working professional doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to
[1:35:36] Speaker 12: connect with people who have similar similar interests.
[1:35:41] Speaker 1: And so is the app free? Do you charge for this?
[1:35:43] Speaker 1: How does that work? And who do you have this
[1:35:45] Speaker 1: is for?
[1:35:46] Speaker 9: Yeah?
[1:35:47] Speaker 12: Absolutely, so anyone can sign up for free. It's at
[1:35:51] Speaker 12: frontpacksports dot com. And you know, right now we're just
[1:35:56] Speaker 12: trying to grow the user base. We have a few
[1:35:58] Speaker 12: one hundred members at the moment, everywhere from obviously the
[1:36:03] Speaker 12: US to Canada, but we've also seen an engagement across Europe,
[1:36:07] Speaker 12: New Zealand South Africa. So it's been like a really
[1:36:10] Speaker 12: interesting mix of people just connecting with you know, other
[1:36:14] Speaker 12: folks that they've never met before. But like I said,
[1:36:17] Speaker 12: they all have a common goal and that's you know,
[1:36:19] Speaker 12: to get better and improve their lives.
[1:36:22] Speaker 1: And has this been fun for you to do this?
[1:36:24] Speaker 1: It's very different than pr but clearly it's it's a
[1:36:28] Speaker 1: new challenge, that's for sure. Yeah.
[1:36:31] Speaker 12: Absolutely, So I grew up, like I said, I grew
[1:36:35] Speaker 12: up playing sports, but endurance sports have always been like
[1:36:38] Speaker 12: a huge thing for me and I think for a
[1:36:41] Speaker 12: lot of people like myself, it's a microcosm of life,
[1:36:45] Speaker 12: because you don't just get good at you know, running
[1:36:49] Speaker 12: a marathon in a week. You know, that takes time,
[1:36:51] Speaker 12: It takes years of work, It takes a lot of practice,
[1:36:55] Speaker 12: and most often times you're going to run into an
[1:36:57] Speaker 12: issue along the way and you have to kind of.
[1:36:59] Speaker 1: Quickly figure that out.
[1:37:00] Speaker 12: So you know, like and during sports, I think this
[1:37:04] Speaker 12: business I'm also figuring out along the way. And you know,
[1:37:08] Speaker 12: I I do have to kind of remind myself it's
[1:37:11] Speaker 12: it's only been a month and a couple of days
[1:37:13] Speaker 12: since we launched.
[1:37:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, you're it's a it's a marathon, not a sprint.
[1:37:16] Speaker 1: You got to remember that you need one of those
[1:37:18] Speaker 1: motivational signs in your own in your own office, you know.
[1:37:21] Speaker 1: Uh to two points. First off, I was talking to
[1:37:24] Speaker 1: my wife just the other night saying how important I
[1:37:26] Speaker 1: think sports are for my kids, Like the amount of
[1:37:29] Speaker 1: things you learn in that and the amount of just
[1:37:32] Speaker 1: to me, it's just it's been amazing to watch my kids.
[1:37:34] Speaker 1: One of them plays basketball, one plays baseball, and it's
[1:37:37] Speaker 1: it's really a big part of their lives. And it's
[1:37:39] Speaker 1: it's learning so much about teamwork and failure and success
[1:37:44] Speaker 1: and and you know, just getting along with people and
[1:37:47] Speaker 1: accepting all these things in life that really does help
[1:37:49] Speaker 1: you later on. And then the second thing was when
[1:37:53] Speaker 1: I did my I did a half marathon, and I
[1:37:56] Speaker 1: actually was very fortunate that I was. I had like
[1:37:59] Speaker 1: a not a sponure, but I was working with a
[1:38:01] Speaker 1: six and so they would they had a person like
[1:38:04] Speaker 1: a coach. And also I had a producer I was
[1:38:06] Speaker 1: working with and we both were doing it together. And
[1:38:08] Speaker 1: so it's what you're talking about in this app is
[1:38:10] Speaker 1: almost exactly what we did in real life, where we
[1:38:13] Speaker 1: had someone to bounce things off of and to get
[1:38:16] Speaker 1: information from, and we also had each other going through
[1:38:18] Speaker 1: the same thing. And so that's kind of what you've
[1:38:20] Speaker 1: recreated here. And I totally get it because we had
[1:38:23] Speaker 1: so many questions. I'm like, should I really be running
[1:38:25] Speaker 1: every day? Should I be doing this? And so I
[1:38:27] Speaker 1: think that this kind of thing is really hard. I
[1:38:28] Speaker 1: think it's one of those things too where you need
[1:38:30] Speaker 1: somebody to lean on too, Like an endurance sport. It's
[1:38:33] Speaker 1: very intense. You need someone to bounce off of and
[1:38:36] Speaker 1: keep that motivation and keep you going because it is
[1:38:39] Speaker 1: very intense. It is a lot of work, and it
[1:38:41] Speaker 1: takes a lot to keep going back every day and
[1:38:43] Speaker 1: keep training.
[1:38:45] Speaker 12: Yeah, no, I mean I completely agree on all those points.
[1:38:48] Speaker 12: And I think the beauty of the networks so far
[1:38:51] Speaker 12: that we've seen is one we created it to be
[1:38:54] Speaker 12: a positive place. I think there's way too many social
[1:38:57] Speaker 12: networks out there where it's all about anonymity and that
[1:39:01] Speaker 12: allows people to be negative and have no accountability. So
[1:39:06] Speaker 12: I will say in the first month with over three
[1:39:08] Speaker 12: hundred posts, everything has been super positive. Again, like I said,
[1:39:14] Speaker 12: it's for anyone as well. So you know, like you said,
[1:39:17] Speaker 12: you you had a coach. We have coaches. We we
[1:39:20] Speaker 12: have a weekly live stream where we bring on experts,
[1:39:23] Speaker 12: we bring on coaches, We talk about the most basic
[1:39:27] Speaker 12: things to the most advanced things. So yeah, anyone can
[1:39:31] Speaker 12: really kind of grow with the sport and within themselves.
[1:39:35] Speaker 1: All right. The website frontpack frontpacsports dot com, frontpacsports dot com. Uh,
[1:39:41] Speaker 1: Scott Baldwin, best wishes for this new app available on
[1:39:45] Speaker 1: iPhone and Android.
[1:39:47] Speaker 12: Absolutely, thank you guys, thanks for.
[1:39:50] Speaker 1: Joining me today. All right, coming up, I'm gonna tell
[1:39:52] Speaker 1: you how you're streaming TV streaming streaming services are tracking you,
[1:39:59] Speaker 1: and also we're going to get into the feedbag that's
[1:40:02] Speaker 1: coming up right here on rich on Tech. Welcome back
[1:40:06] Speaker 1: to rich on Tech. Rich DeMuro here hanging out with you,
[1:40:10] Speaker 1: talking technology. We're gonna get right into it because there
[1:40:13] Speaker 1: is a lot to get through, especially with the feedbag.
[1:40:16] Speaker 1: It is overflowing today. I could barely drag it up
[1:40:20] Speaker 1: to the studio today because it's so filled. But we're
[1:40:24] Speaker 1: gonna get through all that in just a moment. I
[1:40:26] Speaker 1: got my brother justin here. New report from the Center
[1:40:30] Speaker 1: for Digital Democracy says that your streaming services are tracking you.
[1:40:34] Speaker 1: They are spying on you, and they are targeting you
[1:40:37] Speaker 1: with extensive data on your viewing habits and using that
[1:40:41] Speaker 1: to sell you stuff. And this makes a lot of sense.
[1:40:44] Speaker 1: And their argument is that we've never really had such
[1:40:48] Speaker 1: highly targeted and personalized profiling of people based on what
[1:40:52] Speaker 1: they're watching on TV. And the smart TVs themselves are
[1:40:55] Speaker 1: a big part of this data collection system because this
[1:40:58] Speaker 1: stuff is built right into the foundational software on these TVs.
[1:41:02] Speaker 1: It's a fascinating report. It makes a lot of sense.
[1:41:05] Speaker 1: Two things going on here. Number One, your smart TV
[1:41:08] Speaker 1: is probably scanning the screen no matter what and and
[1:41:11] Speaker 1: recognizing the content of everything you watch. It's called automatic
[1:41:15] Speaker 1: content recognition. You probably agree to it when you set
[1:41:18] Speaker 1: up your TV. You can opt out of it or
[1:41:20] Speaker 1: turn it off. The other thing is there is a stream.
[1:41:25] Speaker 1: All the streaming services have opt out guides as well,
[1:41:28] Speaker 1: so it's a great website. The nai dot org has
[1:41:32] Speaker 1: opt out guides for almost every streaming service where you
[1:41:36] Speaker 1: can opt out of some of this data collection. I
[1:41:38] Speaker 1: don't think you're gonna be able to opt out of
[1:41:39] Speaker 1: it all, but I'll put that on the show notes
[1:41:42] Speaker 1: pretty wild because we are just hammered with targeted advertising.
[1:41:46] Speaker 1: This should be a default opt in. But if you
[1:41:50] Speaker 1: set up a if you've ever set up a smart
[1:41:52] Speaker 1: TV lately, it's almost like it says like it's it's
[1:41:54] Speaker 1: gonna benefit you. There are so many screens you have
[1:41:57] Speaker 1: to go through look at them very very closely. Also,
[1:42:01] Speaker 1: I hit a nerve this week. I mentioned on my
[1:42:03] Speaker 1: Facebook that those texts have you gotten these things where
[1:42:06] Speaker 1: they're just like, hey how are you? Or I lost
[1:42:09] Speaker 1: your number in my phone book and can we chat again?
[1:42:12] Speaker 1: I get those messages about five times a day. Yeah,
[1:42:15] Speaker 1: I don't know what it is. It's because all of
[1:42:17] Speaker 1: these recent data breaches have put our phone numbers out
[1:42:21] Speaker 1: there on the web, and so they've got a fresh
[1:42:22] Speaker 1: amount of information. So I posted this to my Facebook.
[1:42:26] Speaker 1: Let me just give you some of the responses. Many
[1:42:28] Speaker 1: people commented they're also getting these obviously. They come in
[1:42:32] Speaker 1: all forms. They talk about weight loss, Amazon deliveries, fake
[1:42:35] Speaker 1: job offers. One person even commented, they got a barbecue invite.
[1:42:40] Speaker 1: I'll actually go to that. Yeah, that sounds like fun.
[1:42:42] Speaker 1: I'd be like where they're confusing and annoying. Makes it
[1:42:46] Speaker 1: difficult to distinguish between legitimate messages and scams. I do agree,
[1:42:49] Speaker 1: you have to look at everything very closely because we
[1:42:51] Speaker 1: are getting and this what I've always talked about. We
[1:42:54] Speaker 1: get legitimate messages like this like hey, your package is
[1:42:56] Speaker 1: delayed and you're like, oh, okay, and that might be
[1:42:58] Speaker 1: from Amazon rare, but you know what I mean, right,
[1:43:02] Speaker 1: But they also play upon that and kind of twist
[1:43:05] Speaker 1: it and make it into their scrutinize every message you
[1:43:07] Speaker 1: get one hundred percent. Let's see. Some people say that
[1:43:11] Speaker 1: these senders get aggressive or insulting if you don't respond.
[1:43:15] Speaker 1: Don't respond to these people, by the way, but some
[1:43:18] Speaker 1: commenters block the numbers, report them as junk, or they
[1:43:21] Speaker 1: engage in playful banter to waste their time. I would say,
[1:43:25] Speaker 1: do not write back to these people, because once you
[1:43:27] Speaker 1: write back, is solidifies your number as being a good
[1:43:30] Speaker 1: phone number, right, and then they will target you even further. Yeah,
[1:43:33] Speaker 1: exactly same with spam email. But hopefully everybody knows that
[1:43:37] Speaker 1: by now, all right. I thought this was pretty cool
[1:43:39] Speaker 1: justin this developer Andrew Schmellian came up with a way
[1:43:44] Speaker 1: to hack adopt Matrix printer. Not really a hack, but
[1:43:49] Speaker 1: he wrote a little program where it pulls the headlines
[1:43:52] Speaker 1: from like Reddit and some other news sites, weather, stocks news,
[1:43:55] Speaker 1: and every morning at eight am, it prints out a
[1:43:57] Speaker 1: one page newsletter for him. I love that. Isn't that cool?
[1:44:01] Speaker 1: I love that? So he actually put his whole project online.
[1:44:04] Speaker 1: It looks like he needed a dot Matrix printer, a
[1:44:07] Speaker 1: Raspberry pie Cereal to USB adapter because the old Dot
[1:44:11] Speaker 1: Matrix didn't have USB, so it's just a serial port YEP,
[1:44:14] Speaker 1: and then power supply and then he just used the
[1:44:16] Speaker 1: free APIs and he made a little programming And isn't
[1:44:19] Speaker 1: that cool? Yeah? I mean that that makes it actually
[1:44:22] Speaker 1: takes away a lot of the distractions that you'd see
[1:44:24] Speaker 1: when you're looking through those headlines, so I like it,
[1:44:27] Speaker 1: That's what he said. He was like, you know, this
[1:44:28] Speaker 1: is like so much healthier than doom scrolling. All right,
[1:44:31] Speaker 1: you want to read the first feedback? Sure? So we
[1:44:35] Speaker 1: have Max from Los Angeles writing in saying thank you.
[1:44:40] Speaker 1: I'm a senior level it and listen to you because
[1:44:43] Speaker 1: of how easily you lay it out to the end users.
[1:44:45] Speaker 1: You have talent. Please don't go anywhere. Oh wow, well
[1:44:49] Speaker 1: I'm going to stay here as long as humanly possible.
[1:44:51] Speaker 1: Thank you. What was his name, Max? Max? Thanks Max?
[1:44:55] Speaker 1: All right, Michael writes in. Michael from Calabasas writes in,
[1:44:59] Speaker 1: I saw your recommend on whisper flow. You should know
[1:45:02] Speaker 1: that it only an Apple Silicon chips, so my Intel
[1:45:06] Speaker 1: based iMac couldn't run it. But to keep those tips
[1:45:08] Speaker 1: and recommendations coming very informative. This is a life changer.
[1:45:12] Speaker 1: So I can press and hold one key on my
[1:45:14] Speaker 1: keyboard and I can dictate, and it uses AI to transcribe.
[1:45:18] Speaker 1: Not only would I say, but to format it in
[1:45:20] Speaker 1: like perfect formatting. It's incredible. But yes it is. It's
[1:45:24] Speaker 1: I guess it's Mac silicon only. It's Mac only, but
[1:45:27] Speaker 1: we're going to see many, many more apps just like that.
[1:45:30] Speaker 1: So thanks for the clarification. Very very useful. When you're
[1:45:33] Speaker 1: eating a stack with one hand and you want it,
[1:45:35] Speaker 1: you still want to work. Yes, tite things out and
[1:45:38] Speaker 1: I get people always say to me, I can't believe
[1:45:40] Speaker 1: you responded to my email. I am now responding to
[1:45:43] Speaker 1: emails probably three times faster than ever before because I
[1:45:45] Speaker 1: don't have to sit there and type them. I can dictate.
[1:45:48] Speaker 1: But it's it's so good that it gets the nuances
[1:45:50] Speaker 1: of what I'm trying to say, like if I'm if
[1:45:52] Speaker 1: I'm like excited, or if I'm writing something in a
[1:45:54] Speaker 1: list or whatever, it gets it, all right, all right,
[1:45:56] Speaker 1: next one, Just all right, we have Michael from Memphis
[1:46:00] Speaker 1: writing in. I have an Android cell phone for personal
[1:46:04] Speaker 1: use and an iPhone for business. Are there any earbuds
[1:46:07] Speaker 1: out there that will automatically stop what I'm listening to
[1:46:09] Speaker 1: on my Android and answer a call I'm receiving on
[1:46:13] Speaker 1: my iPhone without having to steer the call on my
[1:46:15] Speaker 1: iPhone to switch to the earbuds. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
[1:46:20] Speaker 1: All right, This is a feature called multipoint. A lot
[1:46:22] Speaker 1: of headphones, a lot of earbuds now support this, so
[1:46:26] Speaker 1: look for multipoint connection. A lot of them do this
[1:46:30] Speaker 1: where it can seamlessly go. Let's say you're listening to
[1:46:32] Speaker 1: music on your computer your phone rings, it'll automatically swap
[1:46:35] Speaker 1: to your phone. It's not the same thing as having
[1:46:37] Speaker 1: two devices connected. They're basically almost simultaneously connected and kind
[1:46:41] Speaker 1: of listening for anything that's happening on each of those
[1:46:44] Speaker 1: to kind of spring into action and switch the audio source.
[1:46:47] Speaker 1: So multipoint. The ones that I love that I recently
[1:46:49] Speaker 1: tested are the CMF buds and justin you tried them
[1:46:53] Speaker 1: because I brought them home, right, Yeah, I actually tried
[1:46:56] Speaker 1: them today. First of all, excellent sound, I mean, the
[1:46:59] Speaker 1: space audio is great on them. I haven't had a
[1:47:03] Speaker 1: chance to test the dual point the multipoint yet, but
[1:47:06] Speaker 1: it does look like a compelling feature for sure. All Right,
[1:47:08] Speaker 1: you got one more real quick one. She got less
[1:47:10] Speaker 1: than a minute. All right, we got Ryan from Lucasville,
[1:47:13] Speaker 1: Ohio writing in, Hey, Rich, I really enjoyed the show.
[1:47:17] Speaker 1: As a technology coordinator for a local school, I fix
[1:47:19] Speaker 1: a lot of chromebooks. It's rewarding but crazy. Sometimes. I
[1:47:23] Speaker 1: used to listen to Leo Laporte and was glad when
[1:47:25] Speaker 1: you took over. You do a great job helping folks.
[1:47:28] Speaker 1: Thank you again. All right, well, thank you, Ryan. Appreciate that.
[1:47:31] Speaker 1: I always like when it people like the show because
[1:47:35] Speaker 1: it means that I'm doing something right. Sure apps, No,
[1:47:37] Speaker 1: all right, wow, I cannot believe it that is going
[1:47:40] Speaker 1: to do this episode of the show. You can find
[1:47:42] Speaker 1: links to everything I mentioned on the website. Go to
