[1:06] Speaker 1: later on in the show is going to talk digital citizenship,
[1:10] Speaker 1: sharing her expert advice on kids and social media so
[1:15] Speaker 1: great guests there, and of course I will bring you
[1:17] Speaker 1: all of the latest news and great topics that you
[1:20] Speaker 1: should be aware of in the tech world.
[1:22] Speaker 2: Let's start with Apple.
[1:25] Speaker 1: This week, Apple did what I call some press release
[1:28] Speaker 1: announcements of products. So this is when they don't have
[1:31] Speaker 1: a big event to announce products, but they just put
[1:34] Speaker 1: out a press release and voila, we have some new products.
[1:37] Speaker 1: These are not new products in a way of like
[1:40] Speaker 1: we've never seen them before.
[1:41] Speaker 2: These are just refreshed products.
[1:43] Speaker 1: So we got new iPads, we got a new MacBook,
[1:47] Speaker 1: MacBook Air, and let me go over what you need
[1:50] Speaker 1: to know about these. So first off, let's start with
[1:53] Speaker 1: the iPads. So right now, Apple has a couple of
[1:56] Speaker 1: iPads in their lineup. They've got the Mini, then they've
[1:59] Speaker 1: got the iPad, then they've got the iPad Air, and
[2:02] Speaker 1: then they've got the iPad Pro. So these are the
[2:06] Speaker 1: new iPad Airs and of course the new iPad which
[2:09] Speaker 1: I call the standard iPad. So let's start with the
[2:11] Speaker 1: iPad Air. Got the M three chip, so that's Apples.
[2:16] Speaker 1: You know, these are the chips that Apple makes themselves,
[2:18] Speaker 1: and they are really good because they're very power efficient
[2:21] Speaker 1: and they're very powerful, and of course they're written for
[2:24] Speaker 1: Apple software. So ever since Apple started writing their own
[2:27] Speaker 1: chips and making their own chips, they products have just
[2:31] Speaker 1: gotten really good. So this is not their latest M
[2:33] Speaker 1: four chip, but it's the M three, so last year's model,
[2:36] Speaker 1: but that's still really good in an iPad AIR. And
[2:39] Speaker 1: the big thing that this brings to the iPad is
[2:41] Speaker 1: Apple Intelligence, so that means that you can have Apple
[2:44] Speaker 1: Intelligence on the iPad AIR. This is their version of AI.
[2:48] Speaker 1: Of course, I'll tell you more about that in a
[2:50] Speaker 1: little bit, because it's been delayed just a little bit.
[2:53] Speaker 1: Some of the big features we've been waiting for. So this,
[2:56] Speaker 1: like I said, is not their top of the line iPad,
[2:58] Speaker 1: but it's the next in line. So these are kind
[3:01] Speaker 1: of pricey. You're talking five ninety nine for an eleven
[3:03] Speaker 1: inch model, seven ninety nine for a thirteen inch model.
[3:07] Speaker 1: But they did drop the price on that magic keyboard.
[3:10] Speaker 1: So that's the keyboard case that goes along with this,
[3:12] Speaker 1: And if you're trying to get any work done on
[3:14] Speaker 1: an iPad, I highly recommend you get that. It's kind
[3:17] Speaker 1: of expensive. I mean it's two hundred and sixty nine dollars.
[3:20] Speaker 1: My wife was in the Apple store with me and
[3:22] Speaker 1: we saw this. My kid wanted it, and she's like, wait,
[3:25] Speaker 1: why is a keyboard three hundred dollars? This is before
[3:27] Speaker 1: the price guy says, that's just what it is, but
[3:30] Speaker 1: it does sort of you know, here's the deal. Apple
[3:32] Speaker 1: is riding this really fine line with the iPad where
[3:35] Speaker 1: they're still trying to keep this thing as a productive device,
[3:39] Speaker 1: but they don't want to eat into their laptop sales,
[3:42] Speaker 1: right So if they wanted to sort of merge these things,
[3:45] Speaker 1: they would give you a laptop that has a touchscreen,
[3:48] Speaker 1: or they'd give you a full fledged iPad that runs
[3:51] Speaker 1: Mac os or very close to it software. They've done
[3:54] Speaker 1: neither of those things. They keep kind of doing different
[3:57] Speaker 1: things with the laptops versus the eyepads because they want
[4:01] Speaker 1: to keep them sort of separate and keep the use
[4:03] Speaker 1: case scenarios separate. So whether that's a good or bad thing,
[4:06] Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but they are very separate devices. My
[4:10] Speaker 1: feeling is the iPad overall is still very much a
[4:13] Speaker 1: consumption device, whereas the laptop is very much a productivity device.
[4:18] Speaker 1: So back to the keyboard. It got a row of
[4:21] Speaker 1: function keys at the top, and it also got a
[4:23] Speaker 1: larger track pad, So again trying to make these things
[4:25] Speaker 1: more useful for productivity. So you might be wondering, We'll
[4:28] Speaker 1: wait a second, do I go with the iPad Pro
[4:30] Speaker 1: or do I go with the iPad Air?
[4:32] Speaker 2: Well, the Pro is just overall better.
[4:34] Speaker 1: That's the best iPad that Apple makes, and it's probably
[4:36] Speaker 1: the closest to a laptop replacement if you want just
[4:40] Speaker 1: one product that gives you both the laptop experience and
[4:44] Speaker 1: also the iPad experience. So the Pro has a better screen,
[4:48] Speaker 1: it's got face ID, it's got thunderbolt, it's got better cameras,
[4:52] Speaker 1: it's got more speakers, and it has better microphones. So
[4:56] Speaker 1: that is the iPad pro versus the iPad Air. Now
[5:00] Speaker 1: let's talk about the iPad. I think that is probably
[5:02] Speaker 1: the best for everyone out there. I call it the
[5:05] Speaker 1: standard iPad. We're up to the eleventh generation of this device.
[5:09] Speaker 1: And I still remember when this thing launched. I was
[5:11] Speaker 1: working at techmeme dot com. That's the tech website for
[5:15] Speaker 1: It's kind of like the front page for tech news,
[5:17] Speaker 1: and I remember watching this event and just sitting there.
[5:21] Speaker 1: There had been so many rumors about what this device
[5:24] Speaker 1: was gonna be. This was Apple's big follow up after
[5:26] Speaker 1: the success they saw with the iPhone. They were like,
[5:29] Speaker 1: we have something else that's gonna even be better.
[5:32] Speaker 2: And the iPad was.
[5:34] Speaker 1: I mean, it really was revolutionary. I mean, if you
[5:36] Speaker 1: think about all of the businesses that the iPad has affected,
[5:39] Speaker 1: it's been a lot. I mean you're talking magazines, books,
[5:44] Speaker 1: you know, creativity, drawing, and it's just so many.
[5:47] Speaker 2: It goes on and on.
[5:48] Speaker 1: The iPad has just become kind of like what the
[5:50] Speaker 1: iPhone did for everything else, the iPad does for sort
[5:55] Speaker 1: of the rest of the world. Right, you need a
[5:56] Speaker 1: screen that just runs great software and can do pretty
[5:59] Speaker 1: much anything, that's the iPad. So the standard iPad, we're
[6:03] Speaker 1: up to the eleventh generation. This now has a faster chip.
[6:06] Speaker 1: It's the A sixteen. It's not Apple's fastest once again,
[6:10] Speaker 1: that's the A eighteen, which is in the latest iPhones.
[6:13] Speaker 1: But the interesting thing here is that there is still
[6:15] Speaker 1: no Apple AI support on this chip. So they upgraded
[6:19] Speaker 1: the iPad, but they didn't go so far as to
[6:21] Speaker 1: give you the AI, which again they're protecting their product lines.
[6:25] Speaker 1: They have to have differences between these products. So if
[6:28] Speaker 1: you want the AI on the iPad, you got to
[6:30] Speaker 1: go with the Air or the Pro. Now, I don't
[6:33] Speaker 1: think any of that matters, because if you need AI
[6:35] Speaker 1: on the iPad, you could just download Chat GBT that's
[6:37] Speaker 1: still going to run just fine. But again, it's kind
[6:40] Speaker 1: of a weird choice by Apple because they've been promoting
[6:43] Speaker 1: AI so heavily. Then they come out with a brand
[6:45] Speaker 1: new product that doesn't have it storage bump. Now you
[6:49] Speaker 1: get one hundred and twenty eight gigs of storage it
[6:51] Speaker 1: used to be sixty four. Still the same price, three
[6:54] Speaker 1: hundred and forty nine dollars. Amazon is already discounting this
[6:57] Speaker 1: brand new iPad.
[6:58] Speaker 2: It hasn't even launched yet. It comes out March twelfth.
[7:01] Speaker 1: They're giving you thirty dollars let's see, yeah, twenty dollars.
[7:04] Speaker 1: Twenty dollars off three hundred and twenty nine dollars. So again,
[7:09] Speaker 1: don't buy this iPad at full price, get it at
[7:11] Speaker 1: a lower price. Should you upgrade, Well, if your iPad
[7:15] Speaker 1: still does what you need, I don't think he needs
[7:19] Speaker 1: upgrade because your iPad's just fine. Now Here is my
[7:23] Speaker 1: thought process on the upgrade. Okay, if you are running
[7:26] Speaker 1: an iPad in the year twenty twenty five, that's not
[7:29] Speaker 1: going to get the new software update next year. So
[7:31] Speaker 1: right now, iPad OS eighteen is compatible with the iPad
[7:36] Speaker 1: seventh generation and later. Okay, so if you are running
[7:40] Speaker 1: an iPad seventh generation right now, it might be a
[7:44] Speaker 1: good idea to upgrade because next year, chances are iPad
[7:48] Speaker 1: or this year, later this year, iPad OS nineteen is
[7:52] Speaker 1: probably not going to run on your iPad. It's probably
[7:54] Speaker 1: going to drop off. So in that reason, I would say,
[7:57] Speaker 1: probably get a new one if you want it. But
[7:58] Speaker 1: if your iPad's just fine, it's getting software updates, is
[8:00] Speaker 1: doing what you need, You're gonna be just fine. Now,
[8:03] Speaker 1: the MacBook Air, this got the M four chip, and
[8:06] Speaker 1: that is their latest chip. This got the M four
[8:09] Speaker 1: chip and a new sky blue color. And I will
[8:11] Speaker 1: tell you I bought the iPad air last year. Oh sorry,
[8:14] Speaker 1: the MacBook Air last year with the M three chip,
[8:16] Speaker 1: and I absolutely love it.
[8:17] Speaker 2: It's great.
[8:18] Speaker 1: It's not as good as a Pro, but it's a
[8:20] Speaker 1: great laptop. My battery life on this is absolutely incredible.
[8:24] Speaker 1: In fact, I leave it on for the three hours
[8:27] Speaker 1: of this show. I leave the screen on, and I
[8:29] Speaker 1: come home and I still have about eighty percent battery life.
[8:31] Speaker 1: I mean this thing, or if not more, I mean
[8:34] Speaker 1: this thing is really an amazingly power efficient device. They're
[8:38] Speaker 1: saying you now get even more battery life eighteen hours
[8:41] Speaker 1: of battery life. That's of course with all the peak
[8:43] Speaker 1: conditions and things like that, and tariffs, what tariffs. This
[8:47] Speaker 1: got a price cut of one hundred dollars. Starts at
[8:50] Speaker 1: nine hundred ninety nine dollars, So nine hundred and ninety
[8:54] Speaker 1: nine dollars for one of the best laptops. You can
[8:55] Speaker 1: get eight hundred ninety nine dollars if you have education
[8:58] Speaker 1: pricing access. That's a you're a teacher student. You can
[9:01] Speaker 1: look on Apple's website see if you qualify for that.
[9:04] Speaker 1: It also has a better camera for video calls, and
[9:07] Speaker 1: it now supports two external displays with the built in
[9:10] Speaker 1: screen active.
[9:12] Speaker 2: So here is my one tip for this.
[9:14] Speaker 1: Go with the thirteen inch if you are just looking
[9:17] Speaker 1: to do basic things like email, web browsing, and YouTube.
[9:19] Speaker 1: But if you're going to try to do any work
[9:21] Speaker 1: on this MacBook Air, go with the fifteen inch model.
[9:24] Speaker 1: Last year I went with the or two years ago
[9:26] Speaker 1: I went the thirteen inch. Could not get anything done
[9:28] Speaker 1: on that thing. The screen was just too small. Now
[9:31] Speaker 1: I went with the fifteen inch. You can have your
[9:33] Speaker 1: web browser on the left, you can have your AI
[9:35] Speaker 1: and your messages on the right, So go with the
[9:37] Speaker 1: fifteen inch if you want the best productivity. Now about
[9:41] Speaker 1: Apple Intelligence, it is being delayed. Some of the biggest
[9:45] Speaker 1: features that Apple promoted are going to be delayed, and
[9:47] Speaker 1: that is smart Siri. So Siria is supposed to get
[9:50] Speaker 1: really smart by indexing all of your emails, your messages,
[9:53] Speaker 1: and your photos. But John Gruber, one of the prominent
[9:56] Speaker 1: Apple bloggers out there, actually got a a message from Apple,
[10:01] Speaker 1: a comment from Apple that says, yeah, this is taking
[10:04] Speaker 1: longer than we expected, So this is gonna be maybe
[10:08] Speaker 1: next year when you get these features.
[10:09] Speaker 2: So there you have it.
[10:11] Speaker 1: A lot of the AI features are built in at
[10:13] Speaker 1: this point, but the one killer feature is that ability
[10:17] Speaker 1: to ask Siri about your emails, your messages, and your photos,
[10:21] Speaker 1: and that feature is the one that's being delayed.
[10:23] Speaker 2: All right, coming up, I.
[10:25] Speaker 1: Will tell you about a way to thwart scammers scam
[10:30] Speaker 1: callers that I discovered over the week, and you apparently
[10:34] Speaker 1: like that tip, so I'll share that plus your.
[10:36] Speaker 2: Calls at triple A rich one oh one.
[10:38] Speaker 1: That's eight eight eight seven four to two four one
[10:42] Speaker 1: zero one, the website rich on Tech dot TV. My
[10:46] Speaker 1: name is Rich dmiro more rich On Tech coming your
[10:48] Speaker 1: way right after this, Tony in the Redlands. Tony You're
[10:55] Speaker 1: on with Rich.
[10:56] Speaker 3: Hey Rich.
[10:57] Speaker 4: Okay, I have Amazon Music unlimited, say like thirteen bus
[11:03] Speaker 4: fulve bucks a month for it for like years now.
[11:06] Speaker 4: But I only listened to a handful of songs and
[11:09] Speaker 4: I want to buy them, and I found I can
[11:11] Speaker 4: buy them, and I would say all that money if
[11:13] Speaker 4: I can't find platform to play them on my phone.
[11:16] Speaker 4: No app, Every app I want to download says you
[11:19] Speaker 4: have to pay for the service, and that defeats the promise.
[11:22] Speaker 4: You know, I don't want to keep paying ten bucks
[11:24] Speaker 4: a month for ten songs, you know I listened to.
[11:27] Speaker 4: So is there an app you know, like remembery, I
[11:29] Speaker 4: used to have the I used to have that little eye,
[11:31] Speaker 4: that little square thing, white thing Apple, and I don't
[11:35] Speaker 4: it's been gone a long time. I just want to
[11:37] Speaker 4: be able to listen to my music.
[11:39] Speaker 2: Okay.
[11:40] Speaker 1: So you've got music, You've got the music, the audio files,
[11:44] Speaker 1: you want to play them on your Android phone? Yeah, okay,
[11:48] Speaker 1: Well there's a couple of ways you can do this.
[11:50] Speaker 1: What kind of phone do you have?
[11:52] Speaker 4: Samsung?
[11:53] Speaker 2: Okay, Samsung, So.
[11:54] Speaker 1: I mean you can use uh, let's see, Samsung used
[11:57] Speaker 1: to have a built in player, but I guess they
[11:59] Speaker 1: don't more. Huh okay, well there, you could use YouTube Music.
[12:05] Speaker 1: If you download that, you can actually upload the songs
[12:07] Speaker 1: to their cloud service. So it actually makes it quite
[12:11] Speaker 1: easy because you don't even have to transfer them to
[12:13] Speaker 1: your phone. So if you go to even if you
[12:16] Speaker 1: don't have a subscription. By the way, so if you
[12:17] Speaker 1: go to music dot YouTube dot com, you can go
[12:21] Speaker 1: to library and you can literally just drag music into
[12:25] Speaker 1: there and you'll see a section that says uploads, and
[12:28] Speaker 1: then when you go to your phone, those songs will
[12:30] Speaker 1: be on your phone as well. So that's one of
[12:32] Speaker 1: like the easiest, simplest ways to do it. Other than that,
[12:36] Speaker 1: there are some apps that you can use, but I
[12:40] Speaker 1: would have to do some research to figure out which
[12:43] Speaker 1: one I would recommend on that because it's been a
[12:44] Speaker 1: long time since I used an app to play music
[12:47] Speaker 1: on the phone like that. But I'll have to look
[12:50] Speaker 1: into that. But I think I mean, obviously you can
[12:53] Speaker 1: use an app like VLC. They have local playback of
[12:57] Speaker 1: anything on your phone. But I'm trying to think of
[12:59] Speaker 1: an app that actually like has a good organization for
[13:02] Speaker 1: your phone. But I would start with the YouTube music
[13:04] Speaker 1: because I think that's going to be the simplest one,
[13:06] Speaker 1: and you're gonna be able to store your stuff and
[13:08] Speaker 1: organize it inside that app even if you're not paying,
[13:11] Speaker 1: So you don't necessarily need to pay for that to
[13:13] Speaker 1: use that feature, because Google used to have that as
[13:16] Speaker 1: a feature where that was sort of the included music player.
[13:20] Speaker 1: And I'm sure there's more. So if you if you're
[13:22] Speaker 1: listening and you have a music player that you like
[13:24] Speaker 1: on Android, give me a call eight eight eight rich
[13:27] Speaker 1: one O one, or sebody a message Rich on tech
[13:30] Speaker 1: dot tv and just hit contact and I will take
[13:33] Speaker 1: a look at that and give some of your suggestions
[13:36] Speaker 1: and I'll see what I got I've got. You know,
[13:37] Speaker 1: I take some notes on some of this stuff, so
[13:39] Speaker 1: I'm gonna see what I have in my notes about
[13:41] Speaker 1: what I like for like a music app, let's say, so,
[13:45] Speaker 1: I know I always kind of bookmark these things.
[13:49] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna look at that as well.
[13:50] Speaker 1: Okay, good question, Tony, Thanks for that, appreciate it. Eight
[13:53] Speaker 1: eight eight rich one O one eight eight eight seven
[13:55] Speaker 1: four to two four one zero one. I thought this
[13:59] Speaker 1: was interesting week. So I got a phone call eight
[14:02] Speaker 1: hundred number. And I know you're not supposed to answer
[14:05] Speaker 1: calls that you don't know who they're from, but you know,
[14:07] Speaker 1: when you've got kids, you kind of have to answer
[14:09] Speaker 1: the phone right, no matter what. Because the last time
[14:12] Speaker 1: I didn't answer the phone or I don't even remember,
[14:15] Speaker 1: but it was basically my kid had like a broken arm.
[14:18] Speaker 1: It was like a random call and I wasn't going
[14:19] Speaker 1: to answer it, but I did, and it was like, oh,
[14:21] Speaker 1: thank god I did. But this time, so I typically
[14:24] Speaker 1: answer my phone unless it's marked spam call, I will
[14:27] Speaker 1: answer it. So eight hundred number calls and immediately the
[14:31] Speaker 1: person says, hey, this is Bank of America credit Card
[14:33] Speaker 1: Verification Center. They wanted to prove my recent application. I
[14:38] Speaker 1: was like, number one, if you apply for a credit card,
[14:41] Speaker 1: which I didn't, they approve it or deny it right away.
[14:44] Speaker 1: They don't call you to like I mean, as far
[14:46] Speaker 1: as I know, I've never seen that. So I was like, okay,
[14:49] Speaker 1: it seemed like this was a scam, but I wanted
[14:51] Speaker 1: to see where the guy was going. And it occurred
[14:53] Speaker 1: to me that I should try something new. So I
[14:55] Speaker 1: tapped the call recording feature on the iPhone. This is
[14:58] Speaker 1: brand new in iOS eighteen and there's a little icon
[15:01] Speaker 1: upper left hand corner when you're on a call, looks
[15:04] Speaker 1: like kind of an audio wave. I tap that and
[15:06] Speaker 1: it said this call will be recorded. And it gave
[15:09] Speaker 1: a little countdown three to two one. And as soon
[15:12] Speaker 1: as they heard that this call will be recorded, guess what,
[15:15] Speaker 1: they hung up immediately. And I said, Okay, I guess
[15:18] Speaker 1: it's a scam because who wants to be recorded if
[15:21] Speaker 1: you're a scam artist, of course you don't. You don't
[15:23] Speaker 1: want your voice. I mean not that they not that
[15:25] Speaker 1: you're going to like catch this person, but they just
[15:27] Speaker 1: don't want to be recorded because they just It just
[15:29] Speaker 1: makes sense. So I posted this to my Instagram at
[15:33] Speaker 1: rich on Tech, and you guys just went nuts on it.
[15:36] Speaker 1: You said, this was awesome. You love it. People are
[15:38] Speaker 1: trying it out. It seems to work. So the bottom line,
[15:42] Speaker 1: it might not be fool proof, but it might be
[15:44] Speaker 1: something fun to try. My general advice is not to
[15:47] Speaker 1: answer these calls, but if you do answer one, you
[15:49] Speaker 1: find yourself in a tricky situation with anyone any you know,
[15:52] Speaker 1: telemarker or whatever. They don't want to be recorded, so
[15:54] Speaker 1: just press that call recording. As soon as they hear that,
[15:57] Speaker 1: they might hang up. Call recording is now built into
[15:59] Speaker 1: IF as well as newer Pixel and Samsung devices. So
[16:03] Speaker 1: on Pixel, when you're in a call, it says call assist.
[16:07] Speaker 1: You tap that, and then it says call notes. You
[16:09] Speaker 1: tap that and it will record. They should just label
[16:11] Speaker 1: it call recording. Why they say call notes call assist,
[16:14] Speaker 1: I don't know. On Samsung, if you're on one UI seven,
[16:19] Speaker 1: which is the latest software, not every phone has it,
[16:21] Speaker 1: but a lot of the newer ones do. It looks
[16:23] Speaker 1: like an icon with a cassette tape and the letter T.
[16:26] Speaker 1: So again, once you're on that call screen, if you
[16:28] Speaker 1: see that icon, you can tap that and all of them,
[16:31] Speaker 1: because of legal reasons, say this call will be recorded,
[16:34] Speaker 1: and so once the other person hears that, if they
[16:36] Speaker 1: hang up, yeah, you know you got a scam artist
[16:37] Speaker 1: on your hands. If you want to see that tip,
[16:39] Speaker 1: go to my instagram at rich on Tech. Coming up,
[16:42] Speaker 1: we're gonna talk to Matt Swider about the coolest things
[16:45] Speaker 1: he saw at this year's Mobile World Congress. This is
[16:49] Speaker 1: rich on Tech triple eight rich one O one eight
[16:52] Speaker 1: eight eight seven four to two four one zero one.
[16:57] Speaker 2: We just got a question from Tony.
[16:59] Speaker 1: He was at asking about a good app for playing
[17:01] Speaker 1: local files on his Samsung phone, like local MP three's,
[17:07] Speaker 1: and I recommended the cloud feature in Google Music. But
[17:11] Speaker 1: I also said that Samsung used to have like their
[17:13] Speaker 1: own music app. I guess they don't pre install it
[17:16] Speaker 1: on the phones, but doing some further research during the commercial, yes,
[17:21] Speaker 1: Samsung still does have a Samsung Music app in the
[17:25] Speaker 1: play Store, so that's probably what I'd recommend for your
[17:28] Speaker 1: Samsung phone is just download the Samsung Music app.
[17:32] Speaker 2: And it's interesting. I tested it.
[17:33] Speaker 1: You can't download it on a non Samsung device, so
[17:37] Speaker 1: probably the best thing to do is if you have
[17:39] Speaker 1: a Samsung phone, you can do that, and it supports
[17:41] Speaker 1: all the different music files. And it was just updated
[17:44] Speaker 1: on February sixth, so clearly Samsung is keeping this up
[17:47] Speaker 1: to date.
[17:48] Speaker 2: So there you have it.
[17:49] Speaker 1: That is the best way Tony to play those local
[17:53] Speaker 1: music files.
[17:54] Speaker 2: There you go. I love it. All right, Let's bring
[17:59] Speaker 2: on Matt.
[17:59] Speaker 1: Swy just got back from Barcelona for Mobile World Congress.
[18:05] Speaker 2: Matt, welcome back to the show.
[18:07] Speaker 1: I think you now have the designation of being the
[18:09] Speaker 1: guests that has been on the most.
[18:12] Speaker 4: That I.
[18:14] Speaker 5: Cherished that. I will await my award. Thank you.
[18:17] Speaker 1: We'll take another ding for that. We got Adam in
[18:23] Speaker 1: for Bobo today. He was very excited because he brought
[18:25] Speaker 1: a whole bunch of sound effects with him, so he
[18:27] Speaker 1: said he's got to get quicker, but he will. You know,
[18:30] Speaker 1: we're just warming up here, all right. So explain what
[18:32] Speaker 1: Mobile World Congress is.
[18:34] Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a lot like CEES which a lot of
[18:37] Speaker 6: your listeners know about, but it's in Barcelona and it's
[18:39] Speaker 6: dedicated to mobile technology. So anything that fits in your
[18:43] Speaker 6: pocket or anything that fits in a backpack, including laptop,
[18:46] Speaker 6: so those types of things.
[18:48] Speaker 1: So what's the deal with big companies because I feel like,
[18:51] Speaker 1: you know, it's a lot of international companies stuff that
[18:53] Speaker 1: doesn't really necessarily come to the US. But you see
[18:57] Speaker 1: a lot of cool like concept y stuff.
[18:59] Speaker 6: Yeah, Apple isn't here, you know, they weren't there. Samsung
[19:03] Speaker 6: hasn't unveiled a big flagship phone at More World Congress
[19:06] Speaker 6: in years. It's a lot of Chinese manufacturers, Lenovo, Honor, Oppo, Gao,
[19:12] Speaker 6: Me Real, met some people might not be familiar with those,
[19:14] Speaker 6: but they make a lot a lot of the gadgets
[19:16] Speaker 6: that you wish you could get, and it's definitely stuff
[19:20] Speaker 6: that trickles down to us products eventually. So a lot
[19:23] Speaker 6: of the innovations that they're doing at a cheaper price,
[19:26] Speaker 6: eventually the Samsungs and the Apples of the world will
[19:29] Speaker 6: take those ideas and have their own version of those.
[19:32] Speaker 1: So tell me about some of the things you saw this, uh,
[19:35] Speaker 1: this Lenovo solar powered laptop.
[19:37] Speaker 2: Tell me about that. Was it? Was it cool?
[19:40] Speaker 1: Did you get to like touch it or is it
[19:41] Speaker 1: one of those things where it's like behind glass.
[19:43] Speaker 6: Yeah, not only did I get to touch it, I
[19:45] Speaker 6: got to, you know, full around with it where it's
[19:47] Speaker 6: I was covering up the lid that is solar powered.
[19:51] Speaker 6: You know, it has a grid on there. It looks
[19:53] Speaker 6: a lot sleeker than you would expect, and it was
[19:56] Speaker 6: able to you know, if you cover it up, it
[19:58] Speaker 6: dips in its charge meter. But if you're you know,
[20:02] Speaker 6: outside outdoors, it can get twenty minutes with direct sunlight.
[20:06] Speaker 6: It can get one hour of video playback. So that's
[20:08] Speaker 6: that's pretty good. It could be one day an everlasting laptop.
[20:12] Speaker 6: So I love the future of It's not quite there,
[20:16] Speaker 6: but it's something that is a concept that that could
[20:19] Speaker 6: go really far.
[20:20] Speaker 1: Interesting. Who do you think that would be good for?
[20:22] Speaker 1: Just in general? Like if do you have to be
[20:24] Speaker 1: out in direct sun? Or can you be inside?
[20:26] Speaker 6: That was the thing that a lot of my followers
[20:29] Speaker 6: had mentioned. It's like, why do I want to be outdoors?
[20:31] Speaker 6: It doesn't have to be direct sun. And so if
[20:34] Speaker 6: you're you know, we have a window that has indirect
[20:38] Speaker 6: sunlight that also works. So it'll be a little bit
[20:41] Speaker 6: slower of a charge, but it's still going to charge
[20:43] Speaker 6: your your.
[20:44] Speaker 2: Laptop, all right.
[20:46] Speaker 1: Tell me about this other Lenovo laptop eighteen inch screen
[20:50] Speaker 1: because that's pretty large.
[20:52] Speaker 6: Yeah, so eighteen inches that just seems even too big
[20:56] Speaker 6: to actually fout them. But it folds down into a
[20:59] Speaker 6: thirteen inch laptop, which is kind of awesome. So it
[21:02] Speaker 6: has this screen that extends upward, so that's a really
[21:06] Speaker 6: cool thing. And it just has a screen on the
[21:09] Speaker 6: front and the back basically, and you can unfold it
[21:12] Speaker 6: upward and that's really cool. I think that's great for
[21:14] Speaker 6: a productivity because I have a multi monitor setup that
[21:17] Speaker 6: I always use, but I can't take that with me
[21:18] Speaker 6: on the road, and it's the think Book flip AIPC
[21:22] Speaker 6: another concept but something that's very promising.
[21:25] Speaker 1: And I was just complaining earlier how I bought the
[21:28] Speaker 1: MacBook Pro thirteen inch a couple of years ago, and
[21:31] Speaker 1: I literally was ready to throw the thing out the
[21:33] Speaker 1: window because I couldn't. My productivity went so far down
[21:38] Speaker 1: for two years, I almost didn't do any work. It
[21:41] Speaker 1: was just like I couldn't even check my email. It
[21:43] Speaker 1: was fast, but the screen real estate was so tiny
[21:47] Speaker 1: that I felt like I was back using the original iPhone.
[21:50] Speaker 6: A great suggestion for that is sidecar, which you use
[21:53] Speaker 6: an iPad and that kind of acts as a screen,
[21:56] Speaker 6: but you know, it's a little bit just joint you
[21:59] Speaker 6: at the set it up. And I feel like my
[22:01] Speaker 6: eleven inch iPad Pro isn't quite a good match for
[22:04] Speaker 6: a fourteen inch MacBook Pro. You really need the larger
[22:08] Speaker 6: iPad Pro for that reason to kind of feel like
[22:11] Speaker 6: it's not a tiny sidecar you want. You want that,
[22:15] Speaker 6: but that's a good remedy until Lenovo and others come
[22:19] Speaker 6: out with this new technology.
[22:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, and I went fifteen inch this time, and it's
[22:22] Speaker 2: just fine.
[22:22] Speaker 1: I have got my chat GBT on the right, my
[22:24] Speaker 1: browser window on the left, and I'm very happy. Let's
[22:26] Speaker 1: talk about Honor. So, what what's the deal with Honor?
[22:30] Speaker 1: I've heard of this company and where are they out
[22:32] Speaker 1: of and like what are they? What's their deal?
[22:34] Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's a Chinese company.
[22:36] Speaker 6: It used to be kind of like a sub brand
[22:38] Speaker 6: of Huawei before they got spun out, but now they're
[22:41] Speaker 6: they're making a lot of the gadgets that are undercutting
[22:45] Speaker 6: what Apple can do.
[22:46] Speaker 5: So they have something that's it's not a MacBook, but
[22:48] Speaker 5: it's a magic Book Pro fourteen.
[22:51] Speaker 6: It's a Watch fifteen Ultra, and it's an Honor Pad nine.
[22:55] Speaker 6: So those are some of the new gadgets. They also
[22:57] Speaker 6: have kind of a new category that's emerging. The earbuds open,
[23:00] Speaker 6: so they're they're not they don't quite stick in your ears,
[23:03] Speaker 6: but they kind of hang on the uh like just
[23:06] Speaker 6: outside the ears, and it's like having speakers on your ear.
[23:11] Speaker 5: So it's pretty good uh volume.
[23:13] Speaker 6: A lot of runners and bicyclists love this because you're
[23:17] Speaker 6: able to hear the outside world and legally you're not
[23:19] Speaker 6: supposed to have earbuds in when you're biking, at least
[23:22] Speaker 6: in New York.
[23:23] Speaker 2: City.
[23:23] Speaker 5: So this is kind of like, what, Yeah.
[23:26] Speaker 2: It's illegal to wear air pods in New York City.
[23:29] Speaker 6: Yeah when you're on a bike. Yeah, because come on,
[23:32] Speaker 6: you're supposed to hear the traffic.
[23:34] Speaker 2: Wow, traffic.
[23:35] Speaker 6: So this has kind of been a remedy and runners
[23:39] Speaker 6: love it too, because they don't want to be, you know,
[23:41] Speaker 6: with noise isolation while they're running completely, but they want
[23:44] Speaker 6: to have good sounds. So the Honor earbuds open are
[23:47] Speaker 6: kind of a good choice. But we were really impressed
[23:49] Speaker 6: when we got to go hands on with my Moraile Congress.
[23:52] Speaker 6: My colleague Max was able to test them out. But
[23:55] Speaker 6: Honor's big thing is that they are investing ten billion
[23:58] Speaker 6: dollars into AI, which you know, doesn't really mean a
[24:01] Speaker 6: lot for consumers right now, but it just means that
[24:03] Speaker 6: it's a company that's keeping up with Apple, Microsoft and
[24:06] Speaker 6: everybody else investing gobs money into artificial intelligence.
[24:10] Speaker 1: It's funny on the on the topic of the open earbuds,
[24:13] Speaker 1: I this morning, I typically run with these shocks like
[24:16] Speaker 1: open earbuds, like they you know, they use like the
[24:19] Speaker 1: bone conduction instead of like sealing out your ear, So
[24:22] Speaker 1: it's nice when you're running and you can hear everything
[24:24] Speaker 1: around you. But today I ended up using the AirPods pro.
[24:29] Speaker 1: But I did the the mode where it kind of
[24:32] Speaker 1: adapts when it's you know, if you're talking, it'll go
[24:35] Speaker 1: into like where you can hear transparency or it'll noise
[24:38] Speaker 1: cancel when nobody's around you.
[24:40] Speaker 2: So I found that that worked pretty well.
[24:42] Speaker 1: The open The thing about the open earbuds is that
[24:45] Speaker 1: the audio quality is not going to be as like
[24:48] Speaker 1: pronounced as something that seals out your ear right.
[24:52] Speaker 6: We we tested out a couple, you know, the one
[24:54] Speaker 6: plus open the earbuds that they have not as good
[24:57] Speaker 6: as as something that you know you'll have that on.
[25:00] Speaker 5: But you know that's that's really the balance.
[25:02] Speaker 6: You have to strike the right balance between great quality
[25:04] Speaker 6: and you know, the transparency that you were talking about.
[25:08] Speaker 6: That's that's really you know, what they have to hit on.
[25:11] Speaker 6: I call the transparency mode that Apple has. It shames
[25:14] Speaker 6: me basically into not singing Kerry Okio on the streets
[25:17] Speaker 6: in New York City because it starts to make the
[25:20] Speaker 6: sound volume go down because it thinks you're talking to somebody,
[25:23] Speaker 6: So I it catches me sometimes.
[25:26] Speaker 1: That's so funny, or if like I actually they must
[25:29] Speaker 1: have done some sort of upgrade because I felt like
[25:31] Speaker 1: it got a lot better today when I had a monks.
[25:33] Speaker 2: It's been a while since I wore them.
[25:34] Speaker 1: But the other thing is when you like cough or
[25:37] Speaker 1: make like I find myself and I'm running trying to
[25:39] Speaker 1: not make any noise whatsoever, because when they first introduce
[25:42] Speaker 1: that mode, it would take a long time for it
[25:45] Speaker 1: to like kick out of the mode, like once it
[25:47] Speaker 1: gets into it. At one point when it first launched,
[25:50] Speaker 1: I had to like restart my phone basically, like it
[25:52] Speaker 1: was so bad. It was like I had to disconnect
[25:54] Speaker 1: the air buds and or the air pods and everything.
[25:56] Speaker 1: But now today it was like perfect.
[25:59] Speaker 6: It's very sensitive sometimes, but I think they, yeah, you're right.
[26:02] Speaker 6: There was some sort of firmware update, probably along with
[26:05] Speaker 6: the hearing aid technology that came out with When I
[26:09] Speaker 6: was in Barcelona, we went to a you know, someone's
[26:11] Speaker 6: party and one of the companies and it was very loud,
[26:14] Speaker 6: but you could actually stick in your AirPods pro AirPods
[26:18] Speaker 6: PRO two specifically and kind of drown out the noise.
[26:21] Speaker 6: So use it as a noise cancelation devices.
[26:24] Speaker 2: All right.
[26:25] Speaker 1: Finally, before we go this this real meet ultraphone concept.
[26:30] Speaker 2: I saw this scrolling through my Instagram a lot.
[26:32] Speaker 6: Yeah, so you know it's basically replacing the body of
[26:36] Speaker 6: a mirrorless or DSLR camera. So say you forgot the body,
[26:40] Speaker 6: you know, that big bulky body of a camera, real camera,
[26:44] Speaker 6: but you still had the DSR lenses and your phone,
[26:47] Speaker 6: so you're able to kind of stick that that lens
[26:50] Speaker 6: on top of the smartphone and get three times and
[26:54] Speaker 6: ten times zoom and it feels like DSLR quality. Got
[26:58] Speaker 6: to test that out. Putting together it was like, you know,
[27:01] Speaker 6: very interesting. It took a second to do it. That
[27:03] Speaker 6: was my first first time doing it, and I was
[27:06] Speaker 6: really impressed with the quality. But it's another Chinese phone
[27:08] Speaker 6: company called real Me. It's there, it's their concept, but
[27:11] Speaker 6: the fact that we got to test it out means
[27:13] Speaker 6: it's we're probably gonna see it very soon.
[27:15] Speaker 1: I feel like all these concepts that we see, at
[27:17] Speaker 1: the end of the day, people just go back to
[27:18] Speaker 1: their iPhone. It's like the same technology for the past
[27:21] Speaker 1: like ten years now or however many years the iPhone's
[27:24] Speaker 1: been out.
[27:25] Speaker 5: It's true.
[27:25] Speaker 6: And I call that trickle down technology because you know,
[27:28] Speaker 6: you might not be able to you know have these
[27:31] Speaker 6: devices because maybe they don't they don't release in the US,
[27:34] Speaker 6: or maybe it's just not part of your you know,
[27:37] Speaker 6: your it's not in your wheelhouse of what you get
[27:39] Speaker 6: because you.
[27:40] Speaker 5: Maybe stick to the iPhone.
[27:41] Speaker 6: Eventually, if that technology is good enough, it's going to
[27:43] Speaker 6: force the Samsungs the Apples of the world to adopt that. So,
[27:48] Speaker 6: you know a lot of the flip and foldable screens
[27:51] Speaker 6: that we've been seeing. Eventually, maybe next year Apple will
[27:54] Speaker 6: have something of that kind with a foldable phone.
[27:57] Speaker 1: All right, Matt Swider of the Shortcut dot great newsletter.
[28:01] Speaker 1: Sign up for it the shortcut dot Com. Thanks so
[28:05] Speaker 1: much for joining me today.
[28:07] Speaker 5: Thanks for having me Rich all right.
[28:08] Speaker 2: Always good to see you.
[28:09] Speaker 1: I saw you a couple of weeks ago in New
[28:11] Speaker 1: York City for the Amazon Alexa event. Always fun, so
[28:15] Speaker 1: wealth of information The shortcut dot Com. All right, coming up,
[28:19] Speaker 1: let's see we are going to talk about, Oh, we
[28:21] Speaker 1: got a new Google store that opened up in a
[28:24] Speaker 1: key city in America. I'll tell you what why they're
[28:27] Speaker 1: opening physical stores and how many they have compared to
[28:31] Speaker 1: the market leader Apple eight a' eight rich one O
[28:34] Speaker 1: one eight eight eight seven four to two four one
[28:37] Speaker 1: zero one plus your calls coming up right here on
[28:40] Speaker 1: rich on Tech eight eight eight seven four to two
[28:44] Speaker 1: four one zero one, Donald recommended a double Twist as
[28:49] Speaker 1: an app for playing music files on an Android. He
[28:54] Speaker 1: says he regularly uses it and it works well free
[28:57] Speaker 1: for general use, but they also have a paid version.
[29:01] Speaker 2: Remember that one. It's been a while.
[29:04] Speaker 1: And then let's see here, got another question here from Tony.
[29:10] Speaker 1: Tony says, Hey, rich great show. You always mentioned useful
[29:13] Speaker 1: info tips and tricks that you post in your IG account.
[29:15] Speaker 1: Is the same info post it available on other social
[29:18] Speaker 1: media platforms.
[29:19] Speaker 2: Good question.
[29:21] Speaker 1: Most of the time I will post it to my Facebook, Facebook,
[29:24] Speaker 1: dot com.
[29:24] Speaker 2: Slash rich on Tech. Those are both meta.
[29:27] Speaker 1: So if you're staying off meta you don't like meta,
[29:31] Speaker 1: I understand that you know you won't see those. I
[29:35] Speaker 1: sometimes post to Twitter or x but typically it just
[29:39] Speaker 1: depends like I'm not one of those people that posts
[29:42] Speaker 1: the same thing everywhere, and so I think, Tony, the
[29:46] Speaker 1: best way to follow me is probably my newsletter. Just
[29:50] Speaker 1: go to rich on Tech dot tv, sign up for
[29:52] Speaker 1: the newsletter, and that's probably the best way to do it.
[29:57] Speaker 1: Because if something if something bubbles up, and I mean
[30:01] Speaker 1: like if something is popular on one of the places
[30:04] Speaker 1: I post it, I typically include it in the newsletter
[30:07] Speaker 1: because I'm like, oh, okay, people thought that was interesting,
[30:09] Speaker 1: so let me include it for my broad audience. Great question, Tony. Thanks,
[30:14] Speaker 1: Let's go to Fernando in Laguna Hills.
[30:17] Speaker 2: Fernando. You're on with Rich.
[30:19] Speaker 3: Hi. Rich.
[30:20] Speaker 7: I appreciate everything you do with Thank you for taking
[30:22] Speaker 7: my call.
[30:23] Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, I've got a question.
[30:26] Speaker 7: I have an iPhone, the sixteen Pro, and now that we.
[30:29] Speaker 3: Have acts to the.
[30:32] Speaker 7: Port, so we can add another like a external hard
[30:37] Speaker 7: drive or you know, reader, I'm trying to have a
[30:43] Speaker 7: lot of music files already, and I'm trying to find
[30:46] Speaker 7: also a music player that will say this file directly
[30:52] Speaker 7: without any subscription anything like that.
[30:56] Speaker 1: iPhone to transfer the MP threes from an external drive
[31:03] Speaker 1: to the iPhone. There may be a way to drag
[31:06] Speaker 1: them in there directly from the drive, but I think
[31:09] Speaker 1: that that is you know, the way Apple's operating system works,
[31:13] Speaker 1: everything is very it's not like a typical operating system.
[31:16] Speaker 1: So if you were to drag those files in, yeah,
[31:18] Speaker 1: you can do that, but they're going to go into
[31:20] Speaker 1: the files app on your iPhone, which is not ideal.
[31:23] Speaker 7: Right, So.
[31:26] Speaker 2: The way that Apple does.
[31:27] Speaker 1: Things is slightly different than all the other manufacturers out there.
[31:31] Speaker 1: So what I'd recommend is there's an app called Walter
[31:35] Speaker 1: Pro wa l t R Walter Pro And what's great
[31:40] Speaker 1: about this app is you installed on your computer and
[31:44] Speaker 1: you can drag and drop pretty much any file that
[31:47] Speaker 1: you want onto your iPhone and it can do it
[31:51] Speaker 1: with your iPhone plugged into your computer. You can do
[31:53] Speaker 1: it wirelessly, but that is the way I'd recommend doing
[31:56] Speaker 1: it because what this will do is it will put
[31:59] Speaker 1: the files into the music player, into the native player
[32:03] Speaker 1: on the iPhone.
[32:04] Speaker 2: So that is what I'd recommend doing.
[32:08] Speaker 1: And that program, I believe has probably a one time cost,
[32:13] Speaker 1: but you can try it for free. So if you download,
[32:16] Speaker 1: it's called Walter waltr Pro. It's from a company called
[32:20] Speaker 1: soft Reno and I've been using it for years. It
[32:24] Speaker 1: is fantastic, And what's neat about it is that it
[32:26] Speaker 1: will convert the files so you don't have to think
[32:30] Speaker 1: about what the format is that you're putting on your phone.
[32:33] Speaker 1: So Apple's very particular about the formats that it supports
[32:36] Speaker 1: natively for the iPhone. So this if you have a PDF,
[32:40] Speaker 1: you can drop it in there if you have a
[32:43] Speaker 1: music file, I mean, it really will do anything. And
[32:45] Speaker 1: if you have like a random file that has like
[32:48] Speaker 1: a you know, a different format, it will convert that
[32:51] Speaker 1: into a format that is compatible with your iPhone. So
[32:55] Speaker 1: it works with pretty much anything you can think of.
[32:57] Speaker 1: So you can do ring tones, you can do audio books,
[33:01] Speaker 1: you can do video, you can do just anything. And
[33:05] Speaker 1: what's great about it is you just drag and drop
[33:07] Speaker 1: and it will put right in there and you can
[33:08] Speaker 1: use your your native music player on the iPhone to
[33:11] Speaker 1: play those files. So again, Walter Pro, I know you
[33:15] Speaker 1: mentioned free, but and there may be a free alternative,
[33:18] Speaker 1: but this is the best solution that I've found that's
[33:20] Speaker 1: super easy and they do a great job. Wa ltr
[33:25] Speaker 1: pro Walter Pro. So great question, Fernando. I know it's
[33:30] Speaker 1: Apple just likes to do things their own way and
[33:33] Speaker 1: sometimes you have to find a way around that. It's
[33:35] Speaker 1: so weird because here it is an iPhone. It's all
[33:38] Speaker 1: it is is a hard drive, right, and you would
[33:41] Speaker 1: think that they would build software where you can just
[33:43] Speaker 1: drag and drop stuff onto that phone. No, or just
[33:46] Speaker 1: by the way, once you have stuff on that phone, Hey,
[33:49] Speaker 1: I just want to pull that information off the phone. No,
[33:52] Speaker 1: you don't realize until you actually need to do these
[33:54] Speaker 1: things that they're kind of complicated.
[33:56] Speaker 2: So and Apple did that for a reason.
[33:59] Speaker 1: They they did it for either protecting you know, the
[34:03] Speaker 1: file form, you know the files that are copyright protected.
[34:07] Speaker 2: They did it for iTunes with the music stuff.
[34:09] Speaker 1: So there's reasons for it, and probably a lot of
[34:12] Speaker 1: it is security as well, but it's just kind of
[34:14] Speaker 1: like you're like, wait a second, this should be really simple.
[34:17] Speaker 1: I want to drag a file onto my phone. Oh
[34:19] Speaker 1: that's tougher than I thought. And I think Apple Music
[34:22] Speaker 1: used to do that or iTunes used to do it,
[34:23] Speaker 1: but it was also a weird thing where it's like
[34:25] Speaker 1: a one way street. So Walter pro is going to
[34:28] Speaker 1: be really easy, and I think you'll you'll really like that.
[34:32] Speaker 1: Let's see, Okay, we only have a minute. Oh my gosh, Okay,
[34:35] Speaker 1: I'll do this. I'll save the Google Store Santa Monica
[34:38] Speaker 1: for the next segment here, but I'll tell you about this.
[34:41] Speaker 1: If you have an iPhone and you want Google Gemini
[34:44] Speaker 1: on your lock screen, there are six new lock screen widgets.
[34:49] Speaker 1: So if you want to do something other than what
[34:51] Speaker 1: Apple has with the AI stuff and other than what
[34:54] Speaker 1: chatchibt does. If you like Gemini, you can now get
[34:57] Speaker 1: this on your lock screen. So they got six different
[35:00] Speaker 1: widgets that you can add. The first is one where
[35:02] Speaker 1: it brings you instantly to typing, so you can type
[35:04] Speaker 1: in a question, get an AI answer. The next one
[35:07] Speaker 1: is talking, so it opens up Gemini Live. Then you've
[35:10] Speaker 1: got a microphone for voice input. That's the one I
[35:12] Speaker 1: put on there. Camera, you can take a picture, ask
[35:15] Speaker 1: AI about it. You can share an image, or you
[35:18] Speaker 1: can share a file.
[35:19] Speaker 2: Again.
[35:19] Speaker 1: These are all new widgets in the Google Gemini app
[35:23] Speaker 1: for iPhone.
[35:24] Speaker 2: If you want to add them to your lock screen.
[35:26] Speaker 2: You are listening to Rich on Tech.
[35:29] Speaker 1: We got the question about earlier about the best Android
[35:33] Speaker 1: music app for an Android phone for local files and
[35:38] Speaker 1: CALLI cardinal Fan writes in on x Pulsar is a
[35:43] Speaker 1: reasonably good music player for Android.
[35:45] Speaker 2: It is compatible with Android Auto.
[35:47] Speaker 1: Two ooh, I like that. That's a good point. Make
[35:49] Speaker 1: sure it's compatible with Android Auto.
[35:52] Speaker 2: So I looked it up. Pulsar Music Player.
[35:54] Speaker 1: It's got five million downloads, four point six in the ratings.
[35:58] Speaker 1: And most importantly, and this is always how you want
[36:00] Speaker 1: to judge an app. By the way, always look at
[36:03] Speaker 1: the updated on date, because if an app is out
[36:07] Speaker 1: of update, it's not going to be you know, they're
[36:09] Speaker 1: not it's not actively getting any improvements or updates. So
[36:12] Speaker 1: this was last update on December eleventh, twenty twenty four,
[36:15] Speaker 1: which is just fine. So again, if you're looking iOS
[36:19] Speaker 1: or or Android, always look at that updated on date,
[36:23] Speaker 1: the last update, because that will give you an idea
[36:25] Speaker 1: if an app is actively being maintained or if it's
[36:29] Speaker 1: something that's just still lingering in the store and not
[36:32] Speaker 1: really getting any active updates. So again, we got a
[36:35] Speaker 1: lot of suggestions on the best Android music app. So
[36:40] Speaker 1: we've got YouTube Music Cloud, which I think that's the easiest.
[36:43] Speaker 1: Just upload your music to YouTube Music. They have a
[36:46] Speaker 1: free service where you can just upload your MP three'es
[36:48] Speaker 1: and they'll show up on your phone Samsung Music if
[36:51] Speaker 1: you have a Samsung phone. And then listeners recommended Double
[36:54] Speaker 1: Twist and Pulsar. And by the way, if you want
[36:57] Speaker 1: anything that I talk about, I take very good show notes.
[37:00] Speaker 1: It's all on the website rich on tech dot tv.
[37:04] Speaker 1: Definitely while you're there, sign up for a newsletter. Follow
[37:06] Speaker 1: me on Instagram at Rich on tech.
[37:09] Speaker 2: Let's see here. Let's go to Ron in Norco. Ron.
[37:14] Speaker 2: You're on with Rich.
[37:17] Speaker 8: Good afternoon, Rich. How are you folks doing today?
[37:19] Speaker 2: I am doing fantastic great.
[37:22] Speaker 8: I'm sitting here watching the Eagles, Eagles and the lists
[37:26] Speaker 8: and Big Bear on my camera. I'm a third monitor
[37:30] Speaker 8: here and it's fantastic.
[37:31] Speaker 9: Oh.
[37:31] Speaker 8: The father's going down and getting the fishing and bring
[37:34] Speaker 8: the fishing up and then mom picked the fish apart
[37:37] Speaker 8: and feeds the three babies.
[37:39] Speaker 1: People are obsessed with this stuff. It's like a big
[37:41] Speaker 1: on YouTube. I think it's one big ad for Big Bear.
[37:44] Speaker 2: That's what I think. Because it is it makes you
[37:46] Speaker 2: want to go there, Yeah for sure.
[37:49] Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm not too far away, but I don't go
[37:51] Speaker 8: very often. My question is I do consulting and I
[37:55] Speaker 8: go to site, do site visits from time to time.
[37:59] Speaker 8: And I I used to use the live scribe with
[38:02] Speaker 8: the pen and the special paper in the audio system,
[38:07] Speaker 8: which has been good, But what can I use now?
[38:10] Speaker 8: With AI emerging? It helped me do interviews that hadn't
[38:15] Speaker 8: transcribed instantly or virtually.
[38:18] Speaker 2: Oh my, how long are you recording?
[38:20] Speaker 8: Typically not more than an hour, half an hour? I mean,
[38:25] Speaker 8: I get break it up and segments if necessary.
[38:28] Speaker 1: Okay, well, my favorite favorite favorite app is called Whisper
[38:33] Speaker 1: Memos w hisp e R Whisper Memos.
[38:40] Speaker 2: Are you on iPhone or Android?
[38:42] Speaker 8: Android?
[38:43] Speaker 1: Oh okay, hold on, that's different. Okay, so if you're
[38:45] Speaker 1: on Android, that's a little bit different. So are you
[38:48] Speaker 1: on Samsung or you on Pixel?
[38:50] Speaker 8: I'm on Samsung, but I also have an iPad. I
[38:52] Speaker 8: usually take an iPad with me.
[38:54] Speaker 1: Okay, well, well, I think I think the best app
[38:58] Speaker 1: right now is the Whisper Memos app app. And what
[39:00] Speaker 1: I love about it is that you record and basically
[39:05] Speaker 1: it will transcribe using the latest open Ai whisper model,
[39:10] Speaker 1: which is really good.
[39:13] Speaker 2: There's there's a couple of ways to do it. Do
[39:14] Speaker 2: you need to What kind of computer do you have?
[39:18] Speaker 10: I have a.
[39:21] Speaker 8: Basic number, okay.
[39:23] Speaker 1: Windows Desktop. I mean there's so many there's so many
[39:26] Speaker 1: apps that do this. There's another one called letterle L
[39:29] Speaker 1: E T T E R L Y. Now, for what
[39:33] Speaker 1: you're doing, I think the service from otter might be
[39:38] Speaker 1: the best one.
[39:39] Speaker 2: That's for what you're doing. Have you heard of otter
[39:42] Speaker 2: dot ai?
[39:44] Speaker 9: Yes?
[39:44] Speaker 1: Okay, so I think for your your purposes that might
[39:49] Speaker 1: be the best solution. It all depends on do you
[39:51] Speaker 1: want this to be free? Do you want this to
[39:54] Speaker 1: be free or do you or do you mind paying?
[39:57] Speaker 8: I don't mind paying that.
[39:59] Speaker 1: I like the time too, yeah exactly, So I mean
[40:02] Speaker 1: I love free too. So what I do and I
[40:05] Speaker 1: transcribe every interview I do for TV. So when I
[40:09] Speaker 1: interview someone, we record it and then I transcribe it.
[40:12] Speaker 1: And so what I do is I take that audio
[40:15] Speaker 1: and drop it into an app called mac Whisper and
[40:18] Speaker 1: ma ac Whisper now the equivalent for other There's another
[40:24] Speaker 1: app called Descript, which I used to use and that
[40:27] Speaker 1: you can use as well.
[40:30] Speaker 2: Anytime you're doing something for business.
[40:32] Speaker 1: It's tough to get the free because you're using it
[40:34] Speaker 1: more than what the free allotment is. Right, So with
[40:38] Speaker 1: something like descript, you can use it for free, but
[40:41] Speaker 1: as soon as you go over a certain amount, you're
[40:43] Speaker 1: gonna have to start paying. So it all depends on
[40:46] Speaker 1: how much you're using this. With built into the phones nowadays,
[40:51] Speaker 1: they've got so many different options for transcribing.
[40:54] Speaker 2: So you mentioned you have a Samsung, Yes I do.
[40:59] Speaker 2: Do you have the latest one UI on it?
[41:01] Speaker 11: Or no?
[41:01] Speaker 2: Like, do you have the AI features?
[41:03] Speaker 8: Or no, I don't think so. I have the S
[41:05] Speaker 8: twenty two Interim that I hadn't upgrading to AI.
[41:09] Speaker 1: Okay, so yeah, if you have the S twenty two Ultra,
[41:11] Speaker 1: that's not going to have the AI because basically at
[41:13] Speaker 1: this point, the iPhone, the Pixel, and the Samsung they
[41:16] Speaker 1: all have audio recording on them that also transcribes for free.
[41:21] Speaker 1: So that's another way of doing it. But if you
[41:23] Speaker 1: got the S twenty two, they just I think they
[41:27] Speaker 1: just announced the one UI beta. Let's see one UI
[41:34] Speaker 1: seven beta rolls out to more phones.
[41:36] Speaker 2: Let's see.
[41:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, see it's going to the S twenty three. Yeah,
[41:42] Speaker 1: so it's it's not to your phone just yet, but
[41:45] Speaker 1: that would be a good way to do it. But
[41:46] Speaker 1: I mean, look, there's a lot of options out there.
[41:49] Speaker 1: I think that one of these AI kind of it
[41:52] Speaker 1: depends if you want your phone to do it one
[41:54] Speaker 1: hundred percent, if you want your phone to do it
[41:56] Speaker 1: from start to finish, I'd probably recommend something like otter
[41:59] Speaker 1: dot AI. If you don't mind taking the file and
[42:03] Speaker 1: transcribing it later, then I would use something like a descript.
[42:09] Speaker 2: That would probably be the best option there.
[42:11] Speaker 1: And then you know, there's just there's so many ways
[42:13] Speaker 1: of doing this, but I think those are probably some
[42:15] Speaker 1: good ways to start doing it. But again, so what
[42:18] Speaker 1: I do is I get my file, I throw it
[42:21] Speaker 1: into mac whisper, and then I will use that transcription
[42:25] Speaker 1: and then toss that into something like a chat GBT
[42:28] Speaker 1: just to get some key takeaways things like that to
[42:30] Speaker 1: help me think about crafting my story around that. There
[42:35] Speaker 1: is a I'm trying to find. There is a transcription.
[42:40] Speaker 1: Let's see where it is. There is a transcription website
[42:45] Speaker 1: that I will look up the the url, but I
[42:48] Speaker 1: shared it. It's a free transcription on like basically any computer,
[42:53] Speaker 1: so it's hosted on hugging face. I gotta find the
[42:55] Speaker 1: website though, But that one's pretty cool and I will
[42:58] Speaker 1: put that in the show notes. Rich on tech dot
[43:01] Speaker 1: tv is where you can find that. Thanks for the call,
[43:05] Speaker 1: Ron appreciate it. There are so many It's so funny.
[43:08] Speaker 1: I went from never ever transcribing my interviews to now
[43:13] Speaker 1: I transcribe everything. In fact, I have a folder inside
[43:15] Speaker 1: my notes of transcriptions, so anything someone says I can
[43:19] Speaker 1: go back and just and I record everything. All my
[43:22] Speaker 1: meetings I take now, like if I go to like
[43:24] Speaker 1: a briefing I will record that on my phone, and
[43:28] Speaker 1: it's just gotten so incredibly easy to do this process
[43:32] Speaker 1: of transcribing that it's like, why not just have everything?
[43:37] Speaker 1: And I think that, you know, with the later phones,
[43:39] Speaker 1: the newer phones that handle the AI stuff, it really
[43:41] Speaker 1: makes it a lot easier because it's built in for free,
[43:43] Speaker 1: like I said, on the Pixel phones, the latest Samsung phones,
[43:48] Speaker 1: and of course the iPhones if they support the iOS eighteen,
[43:51] Speaker 1: it's all right there for free. But if you don't
[43:53] Speaker 1: have access to the free services, you can always do
[43:56] Speaker 1: some of the paid stuff that will work just as well.
[43:59] Speaker 1: And I'll put everything I mentioned, by the way in
[44:01] Speaker 1: the show notes rich on tech dot TV. I know
[44:02] Speaker 1: I mentioned a lot of different services, but it sort
[44:05] Speaker 1: of depends on what you want out of them, which
[44:07] Speaker 1: one is the best for you? Eighty eight rich one
[44:10] Speaker 1: on one eight eight eight seven four to two four
[44:12] Speaker 1: one zero one visited the new Google store in Santa Monica, California.
[44:18] Speaker 1: It's at the Third Street Promenade. If you're familiar with
[44:21] Speaker 1: LA one of my favorite places. I joke, it's one
[44:24] Speaker 1: of the first places I ever visited when I came
[44:27] Speaker 1: to California, and I thought this was like heaven on Earth.
[44:30] Speaker 1: I have never seen anything like this in my life.
[44:33] Speaker 1: Growing up in New Jersey, it was an outdoor mall
[44:36] Speaker 1: on a street and I'm talking vibrant Adam, you remember this.
[44:40] Speaker 1: Back in the day, Third Street Promenade was like the
[44:43] Speaker 1: place to go for everything, and you just stroll down
[44:47] Speaker 1: the street. You'd get a Wetzel's Pretzels. You'd go into
[44:50] Speaker 1: Barnes and Noble browse the books. You'd go into all
[44:54] Speaker 1: these stores never buying anything, or maybe you did, you
[44:56] Speaker 1: know something little, but you could just spend a whole
[44:59] Speaker 1: night there and you know, you'd run into people, you'd
[45:01] Speaker 1: see people.
[45:02] Speaker 2: It was just so great. Now it's gone through some
[45:04] Speaker 2: ups and downs.
[45:06] Speaker 1: Hopefully it's back on its way up after you know,
[45:08] Speaker 1: pandemic really was tough on the outdoor malls. But anyway,
[45:13] Speaker 1: so now they've got a new Google store there where
[45:15] Speaker 1: you can check out the Pixel phones, they're watches, Nest devices.
[45:18] Speaker 1: You can get a help desk, so if you need
[45:20] Speaker 1: a screen repair, you can do that, or you need
[45:22] Speaker 1: your device swapped, if you have a warranty on it,
[45:24] Speaker 1: they can do that. This is their sixth store they've
[45:28] Speaker 1: got them in New York Chicago Mountain View they're headquarters.
[45:32] Speaker 1: And Boston, LA, of course, is a big market. Austin
[45:35] Speaker 1: is up next and everything is on display. So if
[45:38] Speaker 1: you're looking for an accessory for your pixel watch or
[45:41] Speaker 1: your pixel phone, they've got it there. And that's what's
[45:45] Speaker 1: so great about this is because I get it. There's
[45:47] Speaker 1: five hundred Apple stores worldwide, but there's only six Google
[45:50] Speaker 1: stores where you can see all of this stuff in person.
[45:54] Speaker 2: And of course free Wi Fi. Just a great place
[45:57] Speaker 2: to visit. Definitely check it out.
[45:58] Speaker 1: Oh and by the way, if you look at the artwork,
[46:01] Speaker 1: if you make it to LA and see this place,
[46:03] Speaker 1: the artwork has a secret. It's pretty cool. If you
[46:06] Speaker 1: look from the side, it completely changes color. I talk
[46:09] Speaker 1: to the artist about that. It's made of like thousands
[46:12] Speaker 1: of little strands of thread. Anyway, Google source Santa Monica
[46:16] Speaker 1: now open.
[46:17] Speaker 2: Check it out.
[46:17] Speaker 1: Eight to eight rich one O one eight eight eight
[46:20] Speaker 1: seven four to two four one zero one more rich
[46:23] Speaker 1: On Tech Weekly Weekly.
[46:26] Speaker 2: That's my show on TV.
[46:28] Speaker 1: More rich on Tech coming your way right after this
[46:32] Speaker 1: the website rich on tech dot TV. During the breaks,
[46:35] Speaker 1: I am furiously taking notes about everything I mentioned, and
[46:40] Speaker 1: so we just had the question about the uh transcriptions
[46:43] Speaker 1: of recorded meetings. So I put all of the services
[46:46] Speaker 1: that I mentioned on the website, and you kind of
[46:49] Speaker 1: have to pick the one that works for you. They're
[46:50] Speaker 1: all kind of different, but I like aspects of each
[46:54] Speaker 1: one of them. But the website that I was looking
[46:56] Speaker 1: for that does it on the web. If you have
[46:59] Speaker 1: a file, like an audio file that you want to
[47:03] Speaker 1: transcribe quickly and easily and free, there's a website. It's
[47:08] Speaker 1: a whisper Web. So it's actually hosted on hugging Face.
[47:13] Speaker 1: So I have to it's a it's too long of
[47:16] Speaker 1: a URL to give you over the radio. But if
[47:19] Speaker 1: you go to the website rich on tech dot tv
[47:22] Speaker 1: or just search hugging face whisper Web, that should bring you.
[47:25] Speaker 1: Let me just make sure hugging Face whisper Web. Yeah,
[47:29] Speaker 1: that'll bring it. That'll bring you right there. And that's
[47:32] Speaker 1: completely free, and it does speech recognition transcription right in
[47:37] Speaker 1: your browser, so it's nice in private, and that's a
[47:39] Speaker 1: free way of transcribing stuff. If you have a Windows
[47:42] Speaker 1: computer or a chromebook or a Mac whatever, it'll work
[47:46] Speaker 1: on all those.
[47:47] Speaker 2: So there you go.
[47:48] Speaker 1: Eighty eight rich one O one eight eight eight seven
[47:50] Speaker 1: four two four one zero one. Coming up this hour,
[47:54] Speaker 1: we're going to talk to doctor Gita, doctor g Uh,
[47:57] Speaker 1: doctor Gita Nayir. She's gonn to talk about healthcare misinformation
[48:02] Speaker 1: on social media. Yeah, there's a lot of it, so
[48:05] Speaker 1: she'll talk about that. We had a question from Reggie
[48:09] Speaker 1: in South Carolina that apparently I guess Reggie didn't want
[48:13] Speaker 1: to be on the air, but was asking about tax
[48:16] Speaker 1: time and software that you like, and so I will
[48:20] Speaker 1: tell you what I used this year, which was absolutely incredible.
[48:23] Speaker 1: I love it and it is so good. It's called
[48:27] Speaker 1: fly Finn, flyfinn dot. I guess their websites flyfinn dot tax,
[48:34] Speaker 1: but it's called fly Finnai. And this was one of
[48:37] Speaker 1: the first guests I ever had on this show. And
[48:40] Speaker 1: basically I found this app and it is incredible if
[48:42] Speaker 1: you are even if you're not a freelancer, like it's
[48:46] Speaker 1: just so easy because the way this app works, you
[48:50] Speaker 1: download the app to your phone right and if you're
[48:52] Speaker 1: a freelancer, this is like or whatever you are, it's
[48:55] Speaker 1: still incredible. But basically what they do is that you
[48:58] Speaker 1: connect your bank account to this app and then as
[49:02] Speaker 1: you get transactions in those accounts, AI will go through
[49:06] Speaker 1: and suggest if that's a write off or not, and
[49:09] Speaker 1: basically put it into the categories as you go along
[49:12] Speaker 1: during the year, and so when it comes to tax time,
[49:16] Speaker 1: your taxes are like ninety nine point nine percent done.
[49:20] Speaker 1: And then you can either do them yourself and just
[49:22] Speaker 1: use all the categories and everything that you've already categorized,
[49:25] Speaker 1: or you can use one of their CPAs to do it.
[49:29] Speaker 1: And I will tell you with the caveat that the
[49:31] Speaker 1: CPA seemed to be overseas because I got like a
[49:33] Speaker 1: little warning that my tax return was being handled overseas.
[49:37] Speaker 1: I think, so, you know, if you're comfortable with that,
[49:40] Speaker 1: But I'm telling you, this is the easiest thing I've
[49:43] Speaker 1: ever used in my life.
[49:44] Speaker 2: And it's so easy. They handle everything, and so you
[49:49] Speaker 2: go through.
[49:50] Speaker 1: You have all this stuff on the app, and then
[49:52] Speaker 1: the CPA asks you questions, so you'll get all these questions.
[49:56] Speaker 1: You just respond with your answers. You send them all
[49:58] Speaker 1: your documents if they need it. At the end of
[50:00] Speaker 1: the year and they complete it all. And I was
[50:03] Speaker 1: looking at it today, it was like ninety eight pages,
[50:05] Speaker 1: you know, and you sign it all electronically, and it's
[50:08] Speaker 1: it's really, really slick, so I think it's incredible and
[50:12] Speaker 1: it's not that expensive. It's way cheaper than you know.
[50:16] Speaker 1: I had a CPA do my taxes last year, and
[50:20] Speaker 1: I'm not kidding. It was not a very good experience.
[50:23] Speaker 1: I was not very happy and it was very expensive.
[50:27] Speaker 1: And that's why I went back to the app. Because
[50:30] Speaker 1: I did the app the year before it was almost
[50:31] Speaker 1: too easy. I was like, all right, this is too
[50:33] Speaker 1: easy and too cheap, like what's the catch? And then
[50:35] Speaker 1: I used the CPA and I was like, this is
[50:37] Speaker 1: too expensive and way too complicated. And now this year
[50:40] Speaker 1: I went back to the app and I was just like,
[50:41] Speaker 1: all right, this is the way it is. It's so easy,
[50:44] Speaker 1: it's so great, and I love it. Like I can't
[50:47] Speaker 1: speak highly enough of this. The pricing, you know, it depends. Okay,
[50:51] Speaker 1: they've got three plans. Yeah, so they have a standard
[50:55] Speaker 1: plan where if you're just individual then they've got the
[50:58] Speaker 1: premium and the ultimate. But I'm telling you, oh, the
[51:01] Speaker 1: other thing is, let's say you have during the year,
[51:04] Speaker 1: Let's say you have an expense and you're like, I'm
[51:07] Speaker 1: not sure if this is even a write off. I'm
[51:08] Speaker 1: not even sure if this is deductible. You can flag
[51:13] Speaker 1: it and your CPA the person they assign they have
[51:15] Speaker 1: like all you know, even if you don't have your
[51:17] Speaker 1: own CPA, like if you don't pay for that level,
[51:18] Speaker 1: they still have a whole bunch of CPAs they employ
[51:21] Speaker 1: that just look at these questions all day long and
[51:23] Speaker 1: then respond to you. So if you went out to
[51:26] Speaker 1: lunch with someone in discuss business and you're like, I
[51:28] Speaker 1: don't know, is this a business expense? You flag that expense,
[51:32] Speaker 1: it sends it to them. They take a look at
[51:33] Speaker 1: it and say, oh, yeah, that's categorized under this boom done.
[51:37] Speaker 1: I mean, it's really really incredible. It's called flyfinn aiflyfin
[51:41] Speaker 1: dot tax is the website.
[51:43] Speaker 2: I really like it.
[51:44] Speaker 1: I tried doing the turbo tax thing, and I think
[51:47] Speaker 1: that that's probably my second favorite.
[51:50] Speaker 2: And the reason I like it, I know it's complicated.
[51:52] Speaker 1: I know they you know, do all the stuff where
[51:54] Speaker 1: they fight to make taxes complicated and all that stuff
[51:57] Speaker 1: or people say they do. But I like it because
[51:59] Speaker 1: they do a lot lot of returns and so it's
[52:02] Speaker 1: like their strength in numbers where they've seen a lot
[52:04] Speaker 1: of data and so anytime someone's seen a lot of data,
[52:07] Speaker 1: I always like kind of like that. But you know,
[52:10] Speaker 1: at the end of the day, look, going to like
[52:11] Speaker 1: a person in your neighborhood is probably the easiest and nicest.
[52:15] Speaker 2: But for me, you know, I like to do everything online.
[52:17] Speaker 1: So to me, this worked eight and eight Rich one
[52:20] Speaker 1: on one eight eight eight seven four to two four
[52:22] Speaker 1: one zero one. Coming up, we'll talk misinformation when it
[52:26] Speaker 1: comes to health on the internet.
[52:28] Speaker 2: Let's go to uh Sureley in Long Beach. Surely you're
[52:32] Speaker 2: on with Rich?
[52:35] Speaker 4: Hi?
[52:36] Speaker 12: Hi, Rich. I'm super excited. I'm starting my retirement degree
[52:40] Speaker 12: and I have a computer I haven't used in three years.
[52:43] Speaker 12: It is probably six years old. So I turn it
[52:47] Speaker 12: on and it said battery half uh like depleted. So
[52:52] Speaker 12: I just mean it for like word and typing in
[52:55] Speaker 12: a class or typing notes at a meeting.
[52:57] Speaker 4: That's it.
[52:58] Speaker 12: But of course I want to say it and then
[53:01] Speaker 12: send it, you know, send it somewhere as a PDF.
[53:03] Speaker 12: So I was just wondering, what does what does that
[53:06] Speaker 12: mean to me? With this battery half depleted. It's an
[53:09] Speaker 12: HP it's I think it's a seventeen inch laptop, but
[53:13] Speaker 12: it's super nice, hardly used, but I want to, you know,
[53:17] Speaker 12: make use of something instead of just going out and
[53:19] Speaker 12: getting another one.
[53:21] Speaker 4: What do you think?
[53:22] Speaker 2: Well, is it working?
[53:24] Speaker 12: It turns on and then it goes right off. And
[53:28] Speaker 12: it just said battery half So I'm like, can't you
[53:31] Speaker 12: like to me, it's like, well, what's with the half battery?
[53:33] Speaker 5: I can't If it.
[53:34] Speaker 12: Took me a half battery for the first few years,
[53:36] Speaker 12: cannot use the other half for the next like five.
[53:40] Speaker 9: Months, three year?
[53:42] Speaker 2: Okay, So you turn Okay, so this is an HP.
[53:45] Speaker 2: What do you know the model now?
[53:48] Speaker 12: If hand?
[53:49] Speaker 2: So it's an HP. You've had it for six years.
[53:51] Speaker 2: So does it work when you plug it in? Yes,
[53:55] Speaker 2: it turns on, It turns on off, and then it
[53:59] Speaker 2: goes right off.
[54:00] Speaker 12: About the battery and then it goes off.
[54:01] Speaker 2: Can you remove the battery?
[54:05] Speaker 12: I haven't touched anything, but I don't know. Like, go ahead,
[54:08] Speaker 12: and I'm listening. If you remove it, what.
[54:11] Speaker 2: Do you mean, like, like, does the battery pull out
[54:14] Speaker 2: of the Does the battery pull out?
[54:18] Speaker 4: Oh?
[54:19] Speaker 12: Probably because it's fairly new. I mean, it's not that
[54:23] Speaker 12: old to me, it's not that all. I'm sure it will.
[54:25] Speaker 4: But what about it?
[54:28] Speaker 1: Well, if you could pull out the battery, then you
[54:30] Speaker 1: could just replace the battery and get a new one,
[54:32] Speaker 1: so I would, Yeah, so I would. I would bring
[54:35] Speaker 1: this somewhere you can look up on Yelp, like a
[54:38] Speaker 1: local repair shop, computer repair shop. If the computer is
[54:43] Speaker 1: doing what you need it to do when it turns on,
[54:45] Speaker 1: you know, if it's if it's going to accomplish the
[54:48] Speaker 1: tasks you need, then I would just spend a couple,
[54:50] Speaker 1: you know, a couple bucks on a new battery. It's
[54:52] Speaker 1: probably HP replacement battery. Let's see how much that would be.
[54:57] Speaker 1: I'm guessing like one hundred and fifty three to maybe
[55:00] Speaker 1: three hundred bucks, but it all depends, you know, but
[55:03] Speaker 1: I would. Yeah, I can't find a price on here
[55:06] Speaker 1: right now, but that's what I would do. So HP
[55:10] Speaker 1: has a so you can't get this thing to turn
[55:11] Speaker 1: on at all.
[55:13] Speaker 12: It goes on with that like a pretty screen saver,
[55:16] Speaker 12: and then it says battery is half like done, have you?
[55:21] Speaker 2: And that's when it's plugged in.
[55:22] Speaker 12: When it's been plugged in overnight. I can't set it
[55:24] Speaker 12: plugged in now just to see what happened.
[55:26] Speaker 2: Okay, so you've left it.
[55:27] Speaker 1: I was gonna say, like leave it plugged in for
[55:29] Speaker 1: a long like longer than you think, and see what
[55:32] Speaker 1: happens there. But if it's okay, So if it's if
[55:35] Speaker 1: it's been plugged in overnight, which gives it plenty of
[55:37] Speaker 1: time to charge that battery, and it's still not turning on,
[55:41] Speaker 1: there's something going on there. And typically even with like
[55:45] Speaker 1: a a laptop that the battery is depleted, it would
[55:48] Speaker 1: still turn on with the Yeah, with the battery out.
[55:52] Speaker 2: But okay, So I think what you need to do
[55:54] Speaker 2: is I would bring this to a shop get an estimate.
[55:58] Speaker 2: Where do you live? You said, Long Beach, Long Beach?
[56:01] Speaker 1: Okay, so there are let's see here, there are places
[56:06] Speaker 1: called you break I Fix.
[56:08] Speaker 2: Have you heard of that?
[56:09] Speaker 1: Yes, okay, So I would bring it there. They will
[56:11] Speaker 1: give you a free estimate and see what that estimate is.
[56:15] Speaker 1: And if it's I would say for a six year
[56:19] Speaker 1: old computer to replace the battery, I would not spend
[56:22] Speaker 1: more than one hundred and fifty bucks on that because
[56:25] Speaker 1: six years for a Windows laptop, it's probably not going
[56:28] Speaker 1: to be the best and you can get a new
[56:31] Speaker 1: laptop for five hundred, six hundred dollars, So I would
[56:35] Speaker 1: probably put my money more towards that than this repair.
[56:38] Speaker 2: If it's more than that money that makes.
[56:40] Speaker 9: Sense, yes, sir.
[56:42] Speaker 1: Okay, so check that out and if you if you
[56:46] Speaker 1: need a recommendation on a new laptop after you do this,
[56:48] Speaker 1: but call me back next time. After you get this estimate,
[56:50] Speaker 1: call me back and let me know what they say.
[56:51] Speaker 12: Okay, off the top of your head, what would be
[56:54] Speaker 12: a good college laptop, like an extensive like Lenovo or
[56:59] Speaker 12: something like something to get.
[57:00] Speaker 3: By to the next fight.
[57:03] Speaker 1: Well, I think I think the I think the MacBook
[57:05] Speaker 1: Air at eight ninety nine for a brand new M
[57:08] Speaker 1: four chip is going to be your absolute best choice
[57:12] Speaker 1: because you're gonna get ten years out of that thing
[57:15] Speaker 1: and it's going to be incredible.
[57:18] Speaker 2: The battery life is going to be incredible. Airis four MacBook.
[57:22] Speaker 1: MacBook Air M four and it just came out comes
[57:25] Speaker 1: out actually on March twelfth.
[57:27] Speaker 2: But I would go with that.
[57:28] Speaker 1: That's going to get you through whatever you need for
[57:31] Speaker 1: your studies and longer, and when you're done with it,
[57:34] Speaker 1: you can pass it down to someone that also needs
[57:36] Speaker 1: a laptop while you get a new one.
[57:38] Speaker 7: So that's how great got awesome.
[57:40] Speaker 12: Thank you, sir, Thank you very much.
[57:41] Speaker 1: All right, Shirley, thanks for the call. Triple eight rich
[57:44] Speaker 1: one on one eight eight eight seven four to two
[57:46] Speaker 1: four one zero one. Let's go to Tom and Woodland Hills. Tom,
[57:50] Speaker 1: you're on with Rich.
[57:52] Speaker 3: Hey, Rich, good show.
[57:53] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[57:56] Speaker 3: I've got a weird one for you. I've got Sonna's
[57:59] Speaker 3: one speaker with the Summer's App, which has Alexa enabled,
[58:05] Speaker 3: and I can play other iHeart radio stations like KOs
[58:10] Speaker 3: and things like that, but I can't play KFI.
[58:14] Speaker 2: Can't play Kfi. No, hmm, that's so why not?
[58:20] Speaker 3: It says, hold on here, Alexa play Kfi.
[58:31] Speaker 2: Okay, here, I hear it working.
[58:33] Speaker 7: I'm right now.
[58:36] Speaker 1: Okay, so I hear I heard it said. I'm having
[58:39] Speaker 1: trouble playing that. Okay, So you're trying to do the
[58:41] Speaker 1: voice assistant there. The short answer is, I'm not sure.
[58:45] Speaker 1: I don't know if anything changed. I don't know if
[58:47] Speaker 1: anything uh is going on in the background. I do
[58:50] Speaker 1: know that things sort of happen sometimes that may impact that,
[58:53] Speaker 1: But in general, can you bring it up through the app.
[58:58] Speaker 2: Like if okay, so and.
[59:00] Speaker 3: I will let's see.
[59:01] Speaker 2: So it's just a voice.
[59:03] Speaker 3: Itself in the Sonos app itself, I can't, but.
[59:10] Speaker 10: You know I could use Wait, why can't you through
[59:12] Speaker 10: the Sonos app? I don't know it just wouldn't do it, Okay,
[59:19] Speaker 10: well if you so.
[59:20] Speaker 1: If you go into your services on the sonosapp, there
[59:23] Speaker 1: is an iHeartRadio service and that's kind of like a
[59:27] Speaker 1: fool proof way of getting it to play.
[59:30] Speaker 2: So I would try that.
[59:33] Speaker 1: And sometimes these uh, these radio stations are also on
[59:36] Speaker 1: that tune in, which also is on iHeart or sorry
[59:40] Speaker 1: on sons, so I would check for it there as well,
[59:43] Speaker 1: But bring those two serface in if something you know,
[59:46] Speaker 1: and this, if this continues not working, you might try
[59:50] Speaker 1: to disconnect your Alexa from Soos and bring it back,
[59:53] Speaker 1: or do a restart of your son No system on
[59:57] Speaker 1: the app, like just say restart your system. But you know,
[1:00:00] Speaker 1: now I'm angry at Sonos right now in general because
[1:00:03] Speaker 1: they have really failed me in the past year of
[1:00:06] Speaker 1: their speakers, because I have them in every room and
[1:00:10] Speaker 1: they I still can't adjust the volume across all my
[1:00:13] Speaker 1: speakers with this new app.
[1:00:15] Speaker 2: It's just like it's slow.
[1:00:17] Speaker 1: One of my speakers skips every song, like it just
[1:00:20] Speaker 1: it plays half the song and then skips it. So
[1:00:23] Speaker 1: Sons and you know, the CEO recently either left the
[1:00:26] Speaker 1: company or was pushed out, so they've been going through
[1:00:29] Speaker 1: some issues with their quality control there, so maybe that's
[1:00:32] Speaker 1: part of it, but you should be able to play it.
[1:00:35] Speaker 2: So I would do those two steps.
[1:00:36] Speaker 1: I would disconnect the uh maybe first restart your system,
[1:00:40] Speaker 1: see if that helps them. Maybe disconnect the Alexa service,
[1:00:43] Speaker 1: bring it back on board and see if that helps.
[1:00:45] Speaker 1: But I do think all of this is going to
[1:00:48] Speaker 1: get better when Alexa is infused with AI, because I
[1:00:52] Speaker 1: think she's gonna be able to understand what we're trying
[1:00:55] Speaker 1: to do a lot better. And even though you just
[1:00:57] Speaker 1: said play KFI, I think you're gonna be able to
[1:01:00] Speaker 1: do a lot more with Alexa when it comes to
[1:01:01] Speaker 1: music and streaming and all that stuff once she understands
[1:01:04] Speaker 1: sort of natural language commands.
[1:01:08] Speaker 2: But Tom, I you know source subject for me?
[1:01:10] Speaker 1: This so no no stuff because they just had the
[1:01:14] Speaker 1: best speakers and service in the world until they decided
[1:01:19] Speaker 1: to redo the app, and then just everything started going
[1:01:22] Speaker 1: wrong after that, and I ended up getting rid of
[1:01:25] Speaker 1: my speakers and replacing them with Amazon Echoes, and then
[1:01:28] Speaker 1: that was fine. But I kind of like the grouping
[1:01:30] Speaker 1: of the speakers and I like having them everywhere, and
[1:01:32] Speaker 1: I like the app, and they're slowly but surely clawing
[1:01:36] Speaker 1: their way back to a working system again, but it's
[1:01:39] Speaker 1: been really, really tricky. Eighty eight Rich one on one
[1:01:42] Speaker 1: eight eight eight seven four to two four one zero one.
[1:01:45] Speaker 1: We're gonna try to get our guests coming up to
[1:01:48] Speaker 1: talk about medical misinformation. We'll see if we can get
[1:01:51] Speaker 1: them on the line coming up right here on Rich
[1:01:53] Speaker 1: on tech.
[1:01:55] Speaker 10: Uh.
[1:01:55] Speaker 1: And then Steve in response to our last caller, says,
[1:01:58] Speaker 1: I'm listening to Ki on the Alexa Echo Show right now,
[1:02:03] Speaker 1: so it is working. So it's something to do with
[1:02:06] Speaker 1: your So nos, all right, my next guest is going
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: to break down the growing crisis of healthcare misinformation. Uh,
[1:02:13] Speaker 1: doctor Gita Nayer, Doctor g welcome to the show.
[1:02:18] Speaker 13: Thank you so much for having me, Rich, So tell me.
[1:02:21] Speaker 2: Let's let's just start with tell me what you do.
[1:02:23] Speaker 1: First off, you've got you know, you're you've been on
[1:02:26] Speaker 1: all kinds of places talking about healthcare, your doctor. So
[1:02:31] Speaker 1: why are you interested in this idea of healthcare misinformation?
[1:02:35] Speaker 11: Well, you know, Rich, I'm a doctor, a technologist as
[1:02:39] Speaker 11: well as a best selling author on exactly this topic,
[1:02:42] Speaker 11: miss and disinformation in the era of health tech, AI,
[1:02:45] Speaker 11: social media, all the things we your viewers know and
[1:02:49] Speaker 11: love and really because as a physician, I've just run
[1:02:52] Speaker 11: into this so many times, and having come from a
[1:02:55] Speaker 11: tech background, was previously chief medical officer of salesforce at
[1:02:59] Speaker 11: and T. I understand the power of tech, and I
[1:03:02] Speaker 11: believe in the power of tech, but you still got
[1:03:05] Speaker 11: to understand what you're looking at.
[1:03:08] Speaker 13: And what and how it affects your body. And so
[1:03:10] Speaker 13: this has really become a passion project for me.
[1:03:13] Speaker 1: So I imagine that are we talking Like basically people
[1:03:16] Speaker 1: see this crazy stuff on TikTok and then they start
[1:03:20] Speaker 1: doing it, or you know, it used to be you
[1:03:23] Speaker 1: would just google like what your symptoms were, and you
[1:03:25] Speaker 1: would just follow like what was it WebMD or something.
[1:03:28] Speaker 1: And of course at the end of the day, I
[1:03:29] Speaker 1: always made the joke like no matter what you have,
[1:03:31] Speaker 1: you're gonna die because it's like you just go down
[1:03:34] Speaker 1: this rabbit hole of like the worst possible thing, and
[1:03:36] Speaker 1: then you go to the actual doctor and like, oh no, here,
[1:03:38] Speaker 1: all you need is this little cream and you'll be fine.
[1:03:41] Speaker 13: Exactly, you got it.
[1:03:42] Speaker 11: Look in today's post pandemic world, the everyday consumer out
[1:03:46] Speaker 11: there is really hungry and thirsty for healthcare information, and
[1:03:51] Speaker 11: you're right, they're going.
[1:03:52] Speaker 13: To doctor Google. But more often than not, they're going
[1:03:54] Speaker 13: to doctor TikTok.
[1:03:56] Speaker 14: Right.
[1:03:56] Speaker 11: We know that fifty nine million Americans turn to social
[1:03:59] Speaker 11: media for questions about their health.
[1:04:01] Speaker 13: And I think social media is a great asset.
[1:04:03] Speaker 11: And tool, but you have to be mindful of what
[1:04:06] Speaker 11: you're actually looking at, who is it that you're following,
[1:04:10] Speaker 11: and that you understand and know when to take some
[1:04:12] Speaker 11: of that information with a grain of salt.
[1:04:14] Speaker 2: So how do you know? I mean, like, let's give
[1:04:16] Speaker 2: an example.
[1:04:17] Speaker 1: Now, this may not be medical, but you know there's
[1:04:19] Speaker 1: a big trend right now of like eating your weight
[1:04:21] Speaker 1: in protein every day or something ridiculous like that. So
[1:04:25] Speaker 1: I mean that kind of stuff I feel like started
[1:04:27] Speaker 1: on social media and we've seen a million of these trends.
[1:04:30] Speaker 1: How do you know what's real what's not?
[1:04:33] Speaker 11: You know, there's a couple of things you can do
[1:04:35] Speaker 11: if you're out there and interested in your health. Number One,
[1:04:38] Speaker 11: checking the source, Right is this something coming from if
[1:04:40] Speaker 11: you're looking for something for your kids? The American Academy
[1:04:43] Speaker 11: of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the American Whatever Association.
[1:04:48] Speaker 13: Right, So one looking for who is the source?
[1:04:51] Speaker 11: Keeping in mind there are actually associations out there that
[1:04:54] Speaker 11: are for patients, four people with diabetes, four patients with
[1:04:56] Speaker 11: heart disease. They're always going to be prop gating information
[1:05:00] Speaker 11: that is good for the consumer. So that's one two.
[1:05:04] Speaker 13: Looking for inflammatory language, right the always or never.
[1:05:07] Speaker 11: You know, the human body doesn't tend to work in
[1:05:09] Speaker 11: extremes and complex scientific things can rarely have a simple
[1:05:14] Speaker 11: solution or a hack like eating your weight in protein. Third,
[1:05:18] Speaker 11: you have to understand your body is not the same
[1:05:20] Speaker 11: as everyone's body. Right, If you've got kidney issues, I
[1:05:23] Speaker 11: can tell you that's.
[1:05:23] Speaker 13: A bad plan. So you've got to know your own body.
[1:05:26] Speaker 13: You have to know your own health.
[1:05:28] Speaker 11: And lastly, rich you've got to have your own doctor
[1:05:30] Speaker 11: right when and where you can double check things and
[1:05:34] Speaker 11: actually get personalized information that is for you, relates to
[1:05:37] Speaker 11: your family history and look, I know access is an issue,
[1:05:40] Speaker 11: depends if you have health insurance, depends where you are.
[1:05:42] Speaker 11: It can take a while to get an appointment. But
[1:05:44] Speaker 11: there are a lot of online virtual telemedicine services out
[1:05:47] Speaker 11: there now. And so if you are feeling like you
[1:05:49] Speaker 11: are reading a lot of stuff but you're quite unsure
[1:05:52] Speaker 11: of what to do, make that doctor's appointment. It's going
[1:05:55] Speaker 11: to help you make the final decision and also get
[1:05:58] Speaker 11: you information that's just tailored to you.
[1:06:00] Speaker 13: Not just to the general population.
[1:06:02] Speaker 1: It's so wild, and I'll admit this for myself, but
[1:06:04] Speaker 1: you know, when you have any sort of issue, you're
[1:06:06] Speaker 1: always scared to go to the doctor because you don't
[1:06:08] Speaker 1: want to find out what it actually is. But the
[1:06:10] Speaker 1: reality is it's probably better to know what it is
[1:06:13] Speaker 1: than to not.
[1:06:14] Speaker 11: Absolutely prevention is always going to be the key medicine.
[1:06:17] Speaker 11: We want you to get the mammogram, the colonoscopy before
[1:06:20] Speaker 11: you get breast cancer of colon cancer, so it.
[1:06:22] Speaker 13: Is always wise to know. It can be scary.
[1:06:24] Speaker 11: I agree with that, and I understand that emotion, but
[1:06:28] Speaker 11: you know, knowledge is power, and I love that patients
[1:06:31] Speaker 11: want to read. I often exactly what we said. I
[1:06:34] Speaker 11: often direct my patients when we make a new diagnosis
[1:06:36] Speaker 11: like lupus, ma twitter athritis. I'll say, look, I want
[1:06:39] Speaker 11: you to read everything and come back and ask me
[1:06:41] Speaker 11: your questions. But here's the top three sites, here's the
[1:06:44] Speaker 11: top three influencers that I follow, And so don't be
[1:06:47] Speaker 11: afraid to have that conversation too with your doc, which
[1:06:49] Speaker 11: is where should I be reading, what should I be
[1:06:51] Speaker 11: aware of? And one more Tipperach, if they're selling something,
[1:06:55] Speaker 11: if they're selling you a supplement, if they're selling you
[1:06:57] Speaker 11: something for just nine to ninety nine or click here
[1:07:00] Speaker 11: for this subscription, that's often a really big red flag
[1:07:03] Speaker 11: because doctors are never going.
[1:07:04] Speaker 13: To ask you to do that.
[1:07:06] Speaker 1: Interesting, what do you think about chat GBT? And like,
[1:07:09] Speaker 1: you know, AI is now kind of replacing the Google search.
[1:07:13] Speaker 1: I know that I've uploaded some of my medical records
[1:07:16] Speaker 1: when you can tell me if I'm wrong for doing that.
[1:07:18] Speaker 1: But it's like kind of fascinating you think you're getting
[1:07:20] Speaker 1: like this analysis, this expert analysis.
[1:07:24] Speaker 13: Well, look again, I think knowledge is power.
[1:07:26] Speaker 11: I love that people are more and more curious about
[1:07:28] Speaker 11: the human body, and I think that's terrific.
[1:07:31] Speaker 13: But again, chat GBT is a great source, Like ninety
[1:07:34] Speaker 13: percent of the time, the truth is we still don't know.
[1:07:37] Speaker 11: And again remember it's only as good as the information
[1:07:40] Speaker 11: you give it, right, So I don't know if you
[1:07:42] Speaker 11: uploaded your whole medical record. I don't know if they
[1:07:44] Speaker 11: if you uploaded what has most recently changed. So being
[1:07:48] Speaker 11: mindful that so much of AI is dependent on the data,
[1:07:52] Speaker 11: and that we in healthcare have lots of gaps and
[1:07:54] Speaker 11: data Doctors don't share information. Hospitals don't share information, so
[1:07:58] Speaker 11: you have to be mindful that it's not a silver bullet.
[1:08:01] Speaker 11: Right again, there is no real quick, easy button solution.
[1:08:05] Speaker 11: I think it's great to be curious. I encourage anyone
[1:08:08] Speaker 11: to read scientific sites, to follow actual doctors with licenses.
[1:08:12] Speaker 11: Because here's the other thing rich, right, there's entertainment. There
[1:08:15] Speaker 11: are entertainers out there that are making millions of dollars
[1:08:18] Speaker 11: off of propagating this and disinformation, but they're not accountable
[1:08:23] Speaker 11: the way that physicians nurses are accountable.
[1:08:25] Speaker 13: If I give you bad advice, I can lose my license.
[1:08:28] Speaker 11: So there is an incentive to be on the side
[1:08:31] Speaker 11: of the consumer, which is very different from entertainment.
[1:08:35] Speaker 1: That is such a good point, and I do back
[1:08:37] Speaker 1: to your point about the medical history not being shared.
[1:08:41] Speaker 1: That has got to be the most frustrating thing as
[1:08:43] Speaker 1: a patient. That for me, like I would just imagine
[1:08:46] Speaker 1: that somehow in AI and this will happen in the future,
[1:08:50] Speaker 1: would have everything for my birth up until now in
[1:08:53] Speaker 1: a file, and that way you can see patterns, you
[1:08:55] Speaker 1: can see things emerging, and I'm waiting for that day
[1:08:58] Speaker 1: and I know we're working on it, but it is
[1:09:00] Speaker 1: a very slow process. All right, doctor G. What's the
[1:09:02] Speaker 1: best way for folks to find you online?
[1:09:05] Speaker 4: Oh?
[1:09:06] Speaker 13: Thanks, rich I'm everywhere.
[1:09:07] Speaker 11: I'm on Instagram, I'm on LinkedIn, I'm on x I'm
[1:09:10] Speaker 11: easy to find me, genayor and I look forward to
[1:09:14] Speaker 11: continue the conversation.
[1:09:15] Speaker 13: With you and your viewers.
[1:09:16] Speaker 1: Thank you so much, and I'll link you up on
[1:09:17] Speaker 1: my website rich on tech dot TV. Doctor G, thanks
[1:09:21] Speaker 1: for joining me coming up more of your calls right.
[1:09:24] Speaker 2: Here on rich on Tech.
[1:09:26] Speaker 1: YouTube has a new plan, YouTube Premium Light. Eight bucks
[1:09:31] Speaker 1: a month gets you add free viewing, but there are
[1:09:33] Speaker 1: some catches here, so it's cheaper than the full fourteen
[1:09:37] Speaker 1: dollars a month for the premium plan.
[1:09:39] Speaker 2: So what do you not get?
[1:09:40] Speaker 1: Well, you get ad free videos on most YouTube and
[1:09:43] Speaker 1: YouTube kids content that's mostly from creators. What it doesn't include,
[1:09:48] Speaker 1: you'll still see ads on music content shorts obviously that's
[1:09:51] Speaker 1: the biggest growing area of videos. So that's kind of
[1:09:54] Speaker 1: a bummer and your search results. Plus, there's no YouTube
[1:09:58] Speaker 1: music premium access, which means you can't download the YouTube
[1:10:01] Speaker 1: music and get the free music there or add free music.
[1:10:04] Speaker 1: There's no background play, so your videos will stop if
[1:10:08] Speaker 1: you switch out of the YouTube app, and there's no
[1:10:10] Speaker 1: offline downloads, so you have to have an internet connection
[1:10:13] Speaker 1: to watch.
[1:10:14] Speaker 2: But if you just want to watch.
[1:10:16] Speaker 1: Your favorite videos from creators and you want no ads,
[1:10:19] Speaker 1: eight bucks a month is a lot cheaper than thirteen
[1:10:21] Speaker 1: ninety nine.
[1:10:21] Speaker 2: And I should mention this.
[1:10:24] Speaker 1: I don't know if everyone's aware of this, but when
[1:10:26] Speaker 1: you subscribe to things, how you subscribe determines how much
[1:10:30] Speaker 1: you pay. So, for instance, if you go into YouTube
[1:10:33] Speaker 1: the app on the iPhone and you go to subscribe
[1:10:36] Speaker 1: to YouTube Premium, you're gonna pay like eighteen bucks a
[1:10:38] Speaker 1: month for that. If you go to subscribe on Android,
[1:10:42] Speaker 1: you're gonna pay thirteen ninety nine. The reason Apple takes
[1:10:45] Speaker 1: a thirty percent cut of the fee that you pay
[1:10:49] Speaker 1: every month to these services, and so a lot of
[1:10:51] Speaker 1: times those services will make their prices higher on the iPhone.
[1:10:55] Speaker 1: But people on the iPhone are nonetherwiser because you wouldn't
[1:10:58] Speaker 1: necessarily think to.
[1:10:59] Speaker 2: Go to the YouTube dot com website to subscribe.
[1:11:02] Speaker 1: You're on your phone and so you're subscribing there, and
[1:11:05] Speaker 1: so people on the iPhone, and it's also easier because
[1:11:07] Speaker 1: you've got your payment methods saved and you can cancel
[1:11:10] Speaker 1: the subscription and re sign up and all that stuff,
[1:11:12] Speaker 1: But just be aware that the cheapest way to subscribe
[1:11:15] Speaker 1: to any service that you're subscribing to may be the
[1:11:19] Speaker 1: website directly on a desktop computer. Just remember that the
[1:11:22] Speaker 1: next time you want to subscribe to something. Let's go
[1:11:25] Speaker 1: to Jim and Malibu.
[1:11:26] Speaker 2: Jim, you're on with Rich.
[1:11:28] Speaker 9: Hi, Rich, thank you for taking my call. The question
[1:11:31] Speaker 9: involves how to expand my network outdoors. I have a
[1:11:36] Speaker 9: large piece of property about one and a half acres,
[1:11:40] Speaker 9: and I have an old house with a lot of
[1:11:45] Speaker 9: last and plaster walls. So the Wi Fi MISH signal
[1:11:49] Speaker 9: that I have in the house is very limited. It
[1:11:52] Speaker 9: only goes maybe twenty feet past the walls of the house.
[1:11:57] Speaker 9: So what kind of solution should I be looking at
[1:12:02] Speaker 9: to try and cover all the way to my front gate,
[1:12:06] Speaker 9: which is sixty feet or seventy feet from the house,
[1:12:11] Speaker 9: down to my workshop which is about one hundred and
[1:12:16] Speaker 9: fifty feet from the house.
[1:12:17] Speaker 2: Did you say you're in Malibu?
[1:12:19] Speaker 9: Yes? Oh?
[1:12:20] Speaker 8: Are you? Were?
[1:12:21] Speaker 10: You?
[1:12:21] Speaker 2: Are you okay? From the fires? Did that affect you
[1:12:23] Speaker 2: at all?
[1:12:25] Speaker 8: Not this time?
[1:12:26] Speaker 2: Okay, not this time?
[1:12:27] Speaker 6: I know you.
[1:12:29] Speaker 1: Not just one Yeah, it's been it's been really Uh
[1:12:32] Speaker 1: my my thoughts are with everyone in Malibu and the Palisades.
[1:12:36] Speaker 2: And all these areas they eat in area here.
[1:12:40] Speaker 1: It's just it's been really really people think because it's
[1:12:43] Speaker 1: not on their local news or their nightly news outside
[1:12:46] Speaker 1: of La on a daily basis, but there are issues
[1:12:51] Speaker 1: every single day with these people that were affected by this,
[1:12:54] Speaker 1: Like people are still replaced, displaced in a huge way.
[1:12:58] Speaker 1: People are still all over the city when they should
[1:13:01] Speaker 1: be at home. It's just people lost so much stuff.
[1:13:05] Speaker 1: I mean, it's really a problem. And I know it
[1:13:08] Speaker 1: because my wife works a lot of the people that
[1:13:10] Speaker 1: lost a lot and they are rebuilding and it's very,
[1:13:14] Speaker 1: very slow.
[1:13:16] Speaker 2: It is not an easy process.
[1:13:17] Speaker 1: So anyway to your question, I think that you need
[1:13:21] Speaker 1: to get outdoor and out a mesh system that supports
[1:13:27] Speaker 1: an outdoor access point. So there are two notable systems
[1:13:32] Speaker 1: that have outdoor access points. This is not going to
[1:13:34] Speaker 1: be cheap, but Jim, you know, this is going to
[1:13:37] Speaker 1: solve your problem and it's going to make your WiFi
[1:13:41] Speaker 1: actually usable outside. But it's not going to be cheap,
[1:13:43] Speaker 1: but you know that's that's what you get if you
[1:13:46] Speaker 1: want to have this Wi Fi in these various areas,
[1:13:48] Speaker 1: You've got to get a system that's gonna be able
[1:13:50] Speaker 1: to handle what you have. And so the two systems
[1:13:54] Speaker 1: that I would recommend Eero that's obviously my favorite. And
[1:13:57] Speaker 1: this may require that you have to get a whole
[1:13:59] Speaker 1: new system because these mesh networking systems do not interact
[1:14:03] Speaker 1: with each other. So if you already have one you
[1:14:06] Speaker 1: mentioned that you did this, this other one is not
[1:14:09] Speaker 1: going to play nice with that, so you're gonna have
[1:14:10] Speaker 1: to probably replace them all. But the good news is
[1:14:13] Speaker 1: you do this once. It's gonna last for a while.
[1:14:15] Speaker 1: But Euroo has an outdoor access point. It's three hundred
[1:14:20] Speaker 1: ninety nine dollars. You could probably get it on sale.
[1:14:22] Speaker 1: The usually euro stuff goes on sale a couple times
[1:14:25] Speaker 1: a year, so I would watch for a sale on
[1:14:26] Speaker 1: this and you know, just do a price alert. But
[1:14:30] Speaker 1: that is going to cover you outside. This is Wi
[1:14:34] Speaker 1: Fi seven, so it's going to have, you know, a
[1:14:36] Speaker 1: stronger signal, a better signal, it's going to get through
[1:14:39] Speaker 1: more of the stuff that you have out there, and
[1:14:42] Speaker 1: it's going to work with any eurosystem that you have existing.
[1:14:45] Speaker 1: So if you want to get one for your house,
[1:14:46] Speaker 1: this will be compatible with that, and you can mount
[1:14:49] Speaker 1: it outside and one of these may solve all of
[1:14:53] Speaker 1: your problems. So a one pack is three ninety nine
[1:14:56] Speaker 1: and a two pack is six seventy nine. And they're
[1:14:59] Speaker 1: saying that will Wi Fi coverage per device is fifteen
[1:15:04] Speaker 1: thousand square feet of outdoor coverage, so hopefully that should
[1:15:09] Speaker 1: support what you need on this area, and you may able.
[1:15:13] Speaker 1: What you would do is you would just mount this
[1:15:15] Speaker 1: outside your house and then that signal hopefully would go
[1:15:18] Speaker 1: to where your gate was where you said that was
[1:15:20] Speaker 1: six sixty feet away, and then the back house where
[1:15:23] Speaker 1: you've got the uh the work area that you mentioned,
[1:15:27] Speaker 1: that would hopefully go there as well. So that's number one.
[1:15:30] Speaker 1: The other one is TP Link and they've got a
[1:15:34] Speaker 1: system called Deco Deco and they've got an outdoor system
[1:15:39] Speaker 1: as well. Now this is a whole home mesh Wi
[1:15:43] Speaker 1: Fi six unit. So does this come with six units?
[1:15:49] Speaker 1: Oh no, this is I think Wi Fi six, Sorry
[1:15:53] Speaker 1: Wi Fi six, not six units. Okay, So this one
[1:15:57] Speaker 1: similar thing you've got. Let's see here. You can mount
[1:16:01] Speaker 1: it on a tabletop, a wall mount, or a pole mount.
[1:16:03] Speaker 1: It's outdoor certified, so waterproof and dustproof you can power
[1:16:08] Speaker 1: it over Ethernet, so that means you can have your
[1:16:11] Speaker 1: data connection and your electric power with a single cable.
[1:16:14] Speaker 1: Now this one, you may be able to just connect
[1:16:17] Speaker 1: one outside and just use a separate network for your
[1:16:20] Speaker 1: outdoor stuff if you want to do that, and I
[1:16:22] Speaker 1: guess you could do that with the Eero two. Personally,
[1:16:24] Speaker 1: I wouldn't like having two different networks at my house.
[1:16:26] Speaker 1: But if you want to keep the network that you
[1:16:28] Speaker 1: already have and just install something outside, you can just
[1:16:31] Speaker 1: run an Ethernet cable to this and boom, you've got it.
[1:16:35] Speaker 1: And let's see this covers up to this as it
[1:16:38] Speaker 1: covers up to twenty five hundred feet, so it might
[1:16:42] Speaker 1: be less. Yeah, this is one twenty five hundred feet outdoors,
[1:16:49] Speaker 1: so you might need more. You might need two of these,
[1:16:51] Speaker 1: but what you can do is put one on one
[1:16:53] Speaker 1: side of your house, one on the other side, and
[1:16:55] Speaker 1: those should extend the Wi Fi to your outdoor that
[1:17:00] Speaker 1: you need outdoors, which you said your fence and then
[1:17:02] Speaker 1: also your workshop. But those are the two that i'd recommend.
[1:17:05] Speaker 2: Tp Link.
[1:17:06] Speaker 1: You know that they've been they're very popular company. I
[1:17:10] Speaker 1: know they're out of China, so there's been some issues
[1:17:13] Speaker 1: with the government talking about them and and worried about,
[1:17:17] Speaker 1: you know, the privacy and security of those. But I
[1:17:19] Speaker 1: have yet to see anything new on that ever since
[1:17:22] Speaker 1: the government first mentioned something on it. But I use
[1:17:26] Speaker 1: TP link stuff in my home. It's a very popular product,
[1:17:29] Speaker 1: so I think you can probably use it with you know,
[1:17:32] Speaker 1: as long as you make sure you have a private
[1:17:35] Speaker 1: a good password, and use your name on there for
[1:17:37] Speaker 1: your network, you should be okay. Eero is the Eero
[1:17:41] Speaker 1: Outdoor seven, but those are the two i'd recommend, and
[1:17:45] Speaker 1: thanks for the question today. Eighty eight rich one on
[1:17:47] Speaker 1: one eight eight eight seven four to two four one
[1:17:50] Speaker 1: zero one the website for the show rich on tech
[1:17:54] Speaker 1: dot TV. A couple of things you can do there.
[1:17:56] Speaker 1: You can find my newsletter, so if you're not one
[1:17:59] Speaker 1: of the uh thousands that are subscribed to my newsletter,
[1:18:02] Speaker 1: I send it out every weekend.
[1:18:04] Speaker 2: It's free.
[1:18:04] Speaker 1: You could just put in your email address you'll get
[1:18:06] Speaker 1: that next week, and then you can also contact me.
[1:18:09] Speaker 1: Just hit contact and if you hear something I mentioned,
[1:18:12] Speaker 1: you can go to the show notes this is episode
[1:18:14] Speaker 1: one twelve, or just hit the little magnifying glass and
[1:18:17] Speaker 1: type in a keyword you are listening to Rich on tech.
[1:18:24] Speaker 1: If you're wondering about AI, you want to kind of
[1:18:28] Speaker 1: dip your toes into it, but you're worried about privacy.
[1:18:31] Speaker 1: Duck Duck go, which you know they've made their name
[1:18:33] Speaker 1: on being a very private search engine, they now have
[1:18:36] Speaker 1: some AI features that you can check out that keep
[1:18:40] Speaker 1: everything private, free and of course optional. So now they've
[1:18:44] Speaker 1: got their AI assisted answers in search. They say it
[1:18:48] Speaker 1: pulls from a wider range of sources beyond just Wikipedia,
[1:18:51] Speaker 1: which it did in the past. And then they've got
[1:18:53] Speaker 1: a website Duck dot ai, so Duck dot ai. And
[1:18:58] Speaker 1: what's neat about this is that if you've been wanting
[1:19:00] Speaker 1: to try the various AI chatbots out there, you can
[1:19:05] Speaker 1: without any tracking, without any logins, and you can access
[1:19:10] Speaker 1: let's see here, they've got chat ebt's model on here,
[1:19:14] Speaker 1: they've got a meta model, they've got anthropics on there
[1:19:17] Speaker 1: which is clawed so and they also have Mistral, which
[1:19:21] Speaker 1: is the one out of Paris. So you can pick
[1:19:23] Speaker 1: a chat model and use it without them, you know,
[1:19:27] Speaker 1: without logging in and without them logging anything. So they
[1:19:30] Speaker 1: don't store your chat history on their servers. Everything's done
[1:19:33] Speaker 1: locally on your device. So if you've been wanting to
[1:19:36] Speaker 1: try this stuff out, go to a duck Dot AI
[1:19:39] Speaker 1: and there you go. Privacy remains their top priority, they said. Now,
[1:19:44] Speaker 1: if you have the Duck Duck Go search engine, I
[1:19:47] Speaker 1: know a lot of folks have switched to this for
[1:19:49] Speaker 1: privacy reasons. You can have AI answers in your search engine.
[1:19:53] Speaker 1: But now you can customize how often those answers appear
[1:19:58] Speaker 1: in your search results, or you can turn those off completely.
[1:20:01] Speaker 1: So again, not a bad way to go. Now, I noticed,
[1:20:06] Speaker 1: you know, in the past, when people have asked me
[1:20:08] Speaker 1: about Duck Duck Go, I've said I wasn't a fan
[1:20:11] Speaker 1: of their their search results, like I said, you know,
[1:20:15] Speaker 1: it's it's fine, but like Google's better. Well they must
[1:20:18] Speaker 1: have heard me, because they said, we have improved our
[1:20:20] Speaker 1: search results. So if you haven't tried them in a while,
[1:20:22] Speaker 1: go ahead give us another shot. And so yeah, I mean,
[1:20:26] Speaker 1: if you want to use Duck duck Go, go ahead,
[1:20:28] Speaker 1: no pun intended.
[1:20:30] Speaker 2: Let's see here.
[1:20:31] Speaker 1: I'm going to go to Duck Duck Go privacy peace
[1:20:35] Speaker 1: of mind, and let's do a search here and let's
[1:20:37] Speaker 1: see what the results look like. Yeah, I mean, you know, look,
[1:20:41] Speaker 1: it's you know, some of their stuff comes from MSN,
[1:20:44] Speaker 1: so it just depends. I mean, look, I still think
[1:20:46] Speaker 1: that Google is probably going to have the best search
[1:20:49] Speaker 1: results because it's Google. I mean, they've have like a
[1:20:51] Speaker 1: seventy percent market share or maybe even more, but it's
[1:20:55] Speaker 1: probably more.
[1:20:55] Speaker 2: It's probably like eighty six percent. Who am I kidding?
[1:20:57] Speaker 1: But you know, if you want to if you want
[1:20:59] Speaker 1: something that's a little bit more, I understand. As soon
[1:21:01] Speaker 1: as you search something in Google, it's going to show
[1:21:02] Speaker 1: up all across your everything, because that's the way it is.
[1:21:07] Speaker 1: Let's see here, oh pixel Speaking of Google, if you
[1:21:11] Speaker 1: have a pixel phone, you got a whole bunch of
[1:21:13] Speaker 1: new features. So they do these things called pixel drops
[1:21:16] Speaker 1: every so often. It used to be like once a month.
[1:21:19] Speaker 1: Now they just do them whenever they've got a new one.
[1:21:21] Speaker 1: But a whole bunch of new features if you have
[1:21:23] Speaker 1: a pixel phone, so definitely do that. Software update first off,
[1:21:26] Speaker 1: Gemini Live. This is their AI now supports forty five
[1:21:29] Speaker 1: languages without changing any settings. How wild is that You
[1:21:33] Speaker 1: could just literally start chatting with this thing in all
[1:21:35] Speaker 1: different languages and it will figure out what you're saying
[1:21:38] Speaker 1: and respond. That's incredible. Now, it's got AI powered scam detection.
[1:21:44] Speaker 1: You know, earlier I was talking about that tip to
[1:21:46] Speaker 1: you know, get rid of the scam calls on your phone. Well,
[1:21:49] Speaker 1: this actually has scam detection, so it literally listens to
[1:21:54] Speaker 1: your phone call on the device, so it's private, and
[1:21:57] Speaker 1: it uses AI to detect if there's a fraudulent call
[1:22:01] Speaker 1: or text in real time. So what it's doing is
[1:22:04] Speaker 1: it's listening for someone to say, hey, I've got some
[1:22:07] Speaker 1: great crypto you should purchase, or I love you, please
[1:22:10] Speaker 1: send me crypto, And next thing you know, the pixel
[1:22:14] Speaker 1: will jump in and say, hey, we think this is
[1:22:16] Speaker 1: a scam. So that's pretty interesting. I have not tested
[1:22:20] Speaker 1: that feature, but I don't even know how I test it.
[1:22:22] Speaker 1: I guess I can do a phone call with someone
[1:22:24] Speaker 1: and then have them start Adam, you should do that.
[1:22:27] Speaker 1: You should call me and say like, I love you,
[1:22:30] Speaker 1: here's some crypto I need you to buy. Get me
[1:22:32] Speaker 1: a plane ticket please, I want to come meet you.
[1:22:35] Speaker 2: That sounded weird. Satellite SOS they're.
[1:22:38] Speaker 1: Expanding now now available in Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, and Canada,
[1:22:43] Speaker 1: so that means you can stay connected to emergency services
[1:22:46] Speaker 1: without cell phone, without cell service or Wi Fi just
[1:22:49] Speaker 1: think about that for a second. You can now travel
[1:22:51] Speaker 1: with this pixel phone anywhere in the US, in Hawaii,
[1:22:55] Speaker 1: in Alaska, in Europe, in Canada, and if there's an issue,
[1:22:58] Speaker 1: if you are somewhere without a cell's you can still
[1:23:01] Speaker 1: get help. That is incredible that we have that feature
[1:23:04] Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five. I am amazed at that Verizon
[1:23:08] Speaker 1: and T Mobile customers have additional text via satellite for
[1:23:11] Speaker 1: Verizon for emergencies, T Mobile users can text nine one
[1:23:15] Speaker 1: one over satellite as well.
[1:23:17] Speaker 2: Let's see what else.
[1:23:18] Speaker 1: Pixel Watch now detect non traditional movement like pushing a stroller,
[1:23:22] Speaker 1: using a wheelchair, or hiking with poles, so more accurate
[1:23:26] Speaker 1: activity tracking there. And then the g board, you know
[1:23:29] Speaker 1: this is your your typing, your keyboard. It got a
[1:23:32] Speaker 1: new voice toolbar, so if you want to see more
[1:23:34] Speaker 1: of your screen while your voice to text, you can
[1:23:37] Speaker 1: minimize the typing the keyboard and just still do voice
[1:23:42] Speaker 1: to text. So if you want to see your whole
[1:23:43] Speaker 1: screen while doing voice to text, you can do that
[1:23:46] Speaker 1: as well. Rolling out to pixel devices right now, so
[1:23:50] Speaker 1: if you have a pixel definitely do that softwareupdate. Those
[1:23:52] Speaker 1: things just get better every day. And T Mobile, if
[1:23:55] Speaker 1: you have a T Mobile. If you're a T mobile customer,
[1:23:57] Speaker 1: you know they have this thing called T Mobile Tuesday.
[1:24:00] Speaker 1: They've had it since twenty sixteen. Their latest perk is
[1:24:04] Speaker 1: one free slurpy every month, so you can go to
[1:24:08] Speaker 1: a seven to eleven or a Speedway. Who knew Speedway
[1:24:11] Speaker 1: is owned by seven eleven. I guess now we know.
[1:24:14] Speaker 1: You got to claim the perk through the T mobile
[1:24:18] Speaker 1: the Tea Life app, and it's available not just once,
[1:24:22] Speaker 1: but this is an ongoing thing. It's already started, so
[1:24:25] Speaker 1: I guess. I guess what you do is you claim
[1:24:27] Speaker 1: it in the app and then you can just use
[1:24:29] Speaker 1: it at the store. And by the way, you can
[1:24:30] Speaker 1: pick from a small, medium, or large slurpee. So you know,
[1:24:34] Speaker 1: if you're a T mobile customer, it's funny because Verizon's
[1:24:37] Speaker 1: got something similar. If you look in your Verizon app,
[1:24:40] Speaker 1: they've got something called like my Offers or something Verizon
[1:24:43] Speaker 1: has similar to this. It's not as like Robust, but
[1:24:46] Speaker 1: they do have some offers in there, so check it out,
[1:24:48] Speaker 1: especially for concert tickets. AT and T tried something called
[1:24:51] Speaker 1: at and T Thanks, they gave up on it, but
[1:24:54] Speaker 1: T mobile is still going strong. Like you get some
[1:24:56] Speaker 1: good benefits if you're a T mobile customer. So now
[1:25:00] Speaker 1: you can have a slurpee. I know my kids would
[1:25:02] Speaker 1: be excited about that. Eighty eight Rich one O one
[1:25:05] Speaker 1: eight eight eight seven four two four one zero one
[1:25:08] Speaker 1: website Rich on tech dot Tv.
[1:25:11] Speaker 2: Coming up, We're gonna talk to Stephanie Humphrey.
[1:25:13] Speaker 1: She's gonna talk about digital citizenship for kids and teens
[1:25:17] Speaker 1: on social media.
[1:25:22] Speaker 2: So, uh, this is a big deal digital citizenship.
[1:25:26] Speaker 1: Kids are on social media, teens and we're all trying
[1:25:29] Speaker 1: to figure out, especially as parents, what the best ways
[1:25:33] Speaker 1: of doing this stuff is. And here to talk about
[1:25:35] Speaker 1: that is Stephanie Humphrey. Welcome to the show, Stephanie so much.
[1:25:39] Speaker 15: We're having me Rich Happy to be here.
[1:25:41] Speaker 1: The website Stephanie Humphrey dot com. So you do this
[1:25:45] Speaker 1: talk a lot? What at schools and stuff?
[1:25:48] Speaker 14: Yeah, I talk to students. I have a version of
[1:25:52] Speaker 14: till defutweet did I do for parents? There's one for professionals.
[1:25:56] Speaker 14: But I've been doing this for over ten years now,
[1:25:59] Speaker 14: just trying to help kids understand what it means to
[1:26:02] Speaker 14: be mindful and intentional with their Internet use.
[1:26:06] Speaker 1: What do you think you said you've been doing this
[1:26:07] Speaker 1: for ten years? What do you think the biggest change
[1:26:09] Speaker 1: has been in those ten years since when you started
[1:26:11] Speaker 1: doing this, Man.
[1:26:14] Speaker 13: Honestly, not a lot.
[1:26:16] Speaker 14: I just spoke to some kids probably about a month ago,
[1:26:21] Speaker 14: and the same issues that I was seeing way back
[1:26:24] Speaker 14: when are the same issues that we're having right now.
[1:26:27] Speaker 15: And it really, you know, I had to sort of
[1:26:30] Speaker 15: amend what I say to parents because.
[1:26:32] Speaker 14: They always want me to tell them like what apps
[1:26:34] Speaker 14: specifically not to be on, or or what tool to
[1:26:38] Speaker 14: download to monitor their kids.
[1:26:40] Speaker 15: And I'm like, the tech kind of almost doesn't matter
[1:26:44] Speaker 15: in a sense. It's really just the nature of the
[1:26:47] Speaker 15: Internet and the way it behaves and the way you
[1:26:49] Speaker 15: respond to it.
[1:26:50] Speaker 14: You know, the Internet doesn't have anything to do with
[1:26:53] Speaker 14: whether or not somebody's a good person, you know.
[1:26:55] Speaker 15: So it really does sort of boil down to what
[1:26:58] Speaker 15: you're teaching.
[1:26:59] Speaker 14: Your kids about how to engage with other people, whether
[1:27:03] Speaker 14: it's online or in real life.
[1:27:05] Speaker 1: So, what are some of the biggest risks parents should
[1:27:07] Speaker 1: be aware of when it comes to their kids and
[1:27:09] Speaker 1: social media.
[1:27:11] Speaker 14: Well, I think the first the biggest thing is the
[1:27:13] Speaker 14: lack of age verification. They're still to this day is
[1:27:16] Speaker 14: no way to know who the person you're talking to
[1:27:20] Speaker 14: on the other end of that Internet is so you know,
[1:27:23] Speaker 14: I have kids all the time that think, you know, well,
[1:27:25] Speaker 14: I can just get them to FaceTime me, or I
[1:27:27] Speaker 14: can just ask them. There is no way, no legitimate
[1:27:32] Speaker 14: way beyond some type of serious age verification with IDs
[1:27:37] Speaker 14: and Social Security numbers and whatever to really know for
[1:27:41] Speaker 14: certain unless you know that person already in real life.
[1:27:44] Speaker 14: There really isn't a way to know that you're talking
[1:27:46] Speaker 14: to somebody on the other end of that Internet that
[1:27:49] Speaker 14: is your age.
[1:27:50] Speaker 15: That's not an adult.
[1:27:52] Speaker 14: And I think, you know, you talk about current trends
[1:27:54] Speaker 14: that are different from ten years ago. I think we're
[1:27:57] Speaker 14: going to start to see a lot more sort of
[1:28:00] Speaker 14: problem in streaming. It just leaves itself open to so
[1:28:06] Speaker 14: much because it's live, because you don't really get a
[1:28:09] Speaker 14: chance to think about the things that you're doing while
[1:28:12] Speaker 14: you're streaming, and you don't get to think about those consequences.
[1:28:15] Speaker 14: So I think we're going to start to see because
[1:28:17] Speaker 14: we already saw a little problem with some grooming that
[1:28:19] Speaker 14: was happening with with alleged let me put it that way,
[1:28:23] Speaker 14: grooming that was happening recently on Twitch.
[1:28:25] Speaker 15: So yeah, streaming is gonna be a situation for parents.
[1:28:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's it's kids don't realize that this
[1:28:32] Speaker 1: stuff is permanent. Like you're live streaming, you say something
[1:28:35] Speaker 1: off the cuff and know it's still there after you,
[1:28:38] Speaker 1: you know, are done live streaming. And same thing with
[1:28:40] Speaker 1: like even Snapchat. I know it's so popular because it's
[1:28:45] Speaker 1: quote unquote disappears exactly.
[1:28:48] Speaker 2: It does not.
[1:28:49] Speaker 15: It does not, and they don't think about that. And
[1:28:52] Speaker 15: that's why I say, like, not a lot.
[1:28:53] Speaker 14: Has changed because because young people don't really think past
[1:28:57] Speaker 14: the post. They you know, do what they do to
[1:29:00] Speaker 14: get the clicks and the likes or the engagement, and
[1:29:03] Speaker 14: they're not really thinking about that, and they're not really
[1:29:05] Speaker 14: thinking about.
[1:29:06] Speaker 15: The broader internet.
[1:29:08] Speaker 8: Right.
[1:29:08] Speaker 14: They may only have one hundred friends or one hundred
[1:29:11] Speaker 14: and fifty friends that follow them and that they follow back,
[1:29:14] Speaker 14: so they think that what they do is always going
[1:29:17] Speaker 14: to be contained to that small group and it's not
[1:29:20] Speaker 14: the possibility for things to go viral. Happen every single
[1:29:24] Speaker 14: day online and it can happen with you know, your
[1:29:27] Speaker 14: kid as well.
[1:29:27] Speaker 2: Ah, that's so true.
[1:29:29] Speaker 1: That's such a good point that people just think of
[1:29:31] Speaker 1: their audience like, oh, this is just my friends. Oh no,
[1:29:33] Speaker 1: just one screenshot away from that going anywhere in the world.
[1:29:38] Speaker 1: So do you recommend any tools or apps from monitoring
[1:29:41] Speaker 1: or managing, like, do you have some recommendations?
[1:29:44] Speaker 15: I do like Bark. Bark is super comprehensive.
[1:29:47] Speaker 14: It's one of the best tools out there because it's
[1:29:50] Speaker 14: actually looking for sort of nuance in emails and text messages,
[1:29:54] Speaker 14: suicidal ideation.
[1:29:56] Speaker 15: You know keywords website blocking, blocking and you know.
[1:30:01] Speaker 14: So Bark I think is one of those ones that
[1:30:04] Speaker 14: really could help because it is so comprehensive.
[1:30:07] Speaker 1: And you talk about parents, you know, teaching their kids.
[1:30:10] Speaker 1: What should parents be teaching their kids is it? Is
[1:30:13] Speaker 1: it the non ephemeral aspect of this stuff that you
[1:30:16] Speaker 1: think it's going to go away and it doesn't.
[1:30:18] Speaker 15: That's one of the most important things.
[1:30:20] Speaker 14: One of the things that I found that really resonates
[1:30:22] Speaker 14: with young people when I go into schools to talk
[1:30:25] Speaker 14: about them is to think like a brand and not
[1:30:28] Speaker 14: instead of thinking like a man, think like a brand
[1:30:30] Speaker 14: and think about, you know, what you're putting out there
[1:30:35] Speaker 14: into that digital space and how it represents you in
[1:30:38] Speaker 14: the same way. You know, brands like Nike have to
[1:30:41] Speaker 14: think about colors and logos and things like that. We
[1:30:44] Speaker 14: have that same thing in our personal brand that we
[1:30:47] Speaker 14: need to be thinking about. And that really does tend
[1:30:50] Speaker 14: to resonate with kids because now it gives them a
[1:30:51] Speaker 14: little bit of ownership right of what they do online
[1:30:54] Speaker 14: and how they might be perceived and how they might
[1:30:57] Speaker 14: do damage to that brand.
[1:30:58] Speaker 15: So we always start to comversation there with personal brand.
[1:31:02] Speaker 2: And what are some of the questions you get from kids?
[1:31:04] Speaker 1: Like what are some of like the kickbacks you get
[1:31:06] Speaker 1: from them, like are they're like, come on, does this
[1:31:08] Speaker 1: really matter what I say on you know, Instagram.
[1:31:11] Speaker 14: Once once we have that conversation and put it in
[1:31:15] Speaker 14: that perspective, it shifts the entire conversation. It really really does,
[1:31:20] Speaker 14: And now they want to know, oh my god, my brand,
[1:31:22] Speaker 14: you know, because kids these days they all want to
[1:31:23] Speaker 14: be influencers and different things like that. So you know,
[1:31:26] Speaker 14: they they really start getting a little worried that they
[1:31:29] Speaker 14: need to kind of make sure that they're representing themselves
[1:31:34] Speaker 14: in the best way.
[1:31:35] Speaker 1: I always have the joke back when Twitter was a
[1:31:38] Speaker 1: little bit bigger than this now, like people you would
[1:31:41] Speaker 1: see like this random person on Twitter and they'd be
[1:31:43] Speaker 1: like a you know, person you follow, and they were
[1:31:45] Speaker 1: nice and everything was business, ye, But then all of
[1:31:47] Speaker 1: a sudden when they have like a flight delay, they
[1:31:49] Speaker 1: just turn into like this evil, like meanest person ever
[1:31:52] Speaker 1: because they're like complaining to the airline how like you know,
[1:31:55] Speaker 1: it's delayed or their flight, and it's like it always
[1:31:57] Speaker 1: cracked me up.
[1:31:58] Speaker 2: It's like this Jecklin hide thing.
[1:31:59] Speaker 1: It's like, here's this person you follow, and like all
[1:32:01] Speaker 1: of a sudden, it's like, oh my gosh, that was
[1:32:03] Speaker 1: so mean about it's their minds.
[1:32:05] Speaker 15: And you're like what happened?
[1:32:06] Speaker 14: And it can be just that instantaneous thing that you know,
[1:32:10] Speaker 14: gets you canceled or something.
[1:32:12] Speaker 15: So we just have to be more mindful about how
[1:32:15] Speaker 15: we engage on the internet.
[1:32:17] Speaker 2: What about AI and all this stuff? How is that
[1:32:19] Speaker 2: kind of uh?
[1:32:20] Speaker 1: I mean I've heard of like the the issues high
[1:32:22] Speaker 1: schools are having with these AI nude pictures and all
[1:32:25] Speaker 1: this stuff.
[1:32:27] Speaker 14: Yes, and we're going to see a lot more of that.
[1:32:29] Speaker 14: That's one thing that we didn't see ten years ago. Right,
[1:32:31] Speaker 14: We're definitely going to see a lot of the deep
[1:32:33] Speaker 14: fakes happening. You know, law and law enforcement and our
[1:32:37] Speaker 14: laws on our books are going to have to catch
[1:32:38] Speaker 14: up with that kind of thing, you know, as they
[1:32:40] Speaker 14: add that to what it means to do revenge porn
[1:32:44] Speaker 14: and things like that, and then we really are just
[1:32:46] Speaker 14: going to have to you know, disclose these kind of
[1:32:49] Speaker 14: things when we're using them as tools and not add
[1:32:52] Speaker 14: to that AI slop, if you will. So you really
[1:32:56] Speaker 14: got to do your own due diligence when you're sharing
[1:32:58] Speaker 14: things online to not add to that noise.
[1:33:01] Speaker 1: It's crazy to me that these nude I guess texts
[1:33:06] Speaker 1: or whatever they are are like actually a thing like
[1:33:08] Speaker 1: this is a thing that is like very acceptable in
[1:33:10] Speaker 1: the culture at this point, with not just young people
[1:33:13] Speaker 1: but a lot of people like sending these pictures back
[1:33:15] Speaker 1: and forth. Yeah, And it's like this is a picture
[1:33:18] Speaker 1: that is not going to go away, and it's, by
[1:33:21] Speaker 1: the way, very easily shared with other people. And we
[1:33:23] Speaker 1: see the issues associated with that over and over, especially
[1:33:27] Speaker 1: if you're a teenager sharing this stuff.
[1:33:29] Speaker 15: Yeah, and and and that's one of the things I
[1:33:31] Speaker 15: talk about as well.
[1:33:32] Speaker 14: I tell students like this will never go away, and
[1:33:35] Speaker 14: it is guaranteed to be shared, you know, even if
[1:33:38] Speaker 14: it's just a boyfriend or a girlfriend, and they promise
[1:33:41] Speaker 14: you that no one will ever see it.
[1:33:43] Speaker 15: And I know this is kind of just the way.
[1:33:46] Speaker 14: You know, romance happens with young people these days and
[1:33:49] Speaker 14: in a lot of cases, but you know, we have
[1:33:51] Speaker 14: to do a better job as adults, I think, to
[1:33:54] Speaker 14: let young people know that this type of thing is permanent.
[1:33:58] Speaker 2: Steph. What do you like about all this stuff you cover? Technology?
[1:34:01] Speaker 2: Cover this? What's your kind of like? Why do you
[1:34:03] Speaker 2: like doing this?
[1:34:05] Speaker 15: It's just I love helping people. I'm an engineer by
[1:34:08] Speaker 15: trade and training.
[1:34:09] Speaker 14: I was an engineer for thirteen years, so you know,
[1:34:11] Speaker 14: this is sort of my wheelhouse, and I see how
[1:34:14] Speaker 14: it can be.
[1:34:15] Speaker 15: That tool that can help us when it's used properly.
[1:34:19] Speaker 14: So you know, I've sort of made it my mission
[1:34:21] Speaker 14: to make sure that people understand how to use it
[1:34:24] Speaker 14: to make their lives easier and not harder.
[1:34:27] Speaker 2: All right, best place for folks to follow you.
[1:34:29] Speaker 14: All around the weback tech Life, Steph. Or head to
[1:34:32] Speaker 14: my website at Stephanie Humphrey dot com.
[1:34:33] Speaker 15: And sign up for my newsletter.
[1:34:35] Speaker 1: All right, we love the newsletters. Stephanie Humphrey, Thanks so
[1:34:38] Speaker 1: much for joining me today.
[1:34:40] Speaker 15: Thanks for having me.
[1:34:41] Speaker 1: Take care all right. Coming up, we are going to
[1:34:43] Speaker 1: get through a couple more news items.
[1:34:45] Speaker 2: Let's see what do we have here.
[1:34:47] Speaker 1: Oh, I'll tell you about the biggest scams in twenty
[1:34:51] Speaker 1: twenty four, according to the Better Business Bureau. Plus, I
[1:34:55] Speaker 1: will open up the feedbag that's coming up right here
[1:34:58] Speaker 1: on rich on Tech. If you want notes or a
[1:35:06] Speaker 1: link to anything I talk about on the show, this
[1:35:08] Speaker 1: is episode one twelve. Just go to the website look
[1:35:11] Speaker 1: for that, or just tap the magnifying glass and type
[1:35:14] Speaker 1: in a keyword and that should literally bring you right
[1:35:16] Speaker 1: to whatever I mentioned before we open up the feedback.
[1:35:20] Speaker 2: Couple of items of note.
[1:35:22] Speaker 1: Better Business Bureau says financial grooming scams lead to the
[1:35:25] Speaker 1: biggest losses in twenty twenty four. So they analyzed all
[1:35:29] Speaker 1: of the scams of last year and found that investment scams,
[1:35:33] Speaker 1: especially involving cryptocurrency, are the number one riskiest scams. Average
[1:35:39] Speaker 1: reported loss yeah five thousand bucks. Financial grooming scams are growing.
[1:35:46] Speaker 1: This is when scammers build trust over weeks or months,
[1:35:49] Speaker 1: convincing their victims to invest in fake platforms, and then,
[1:35:53] Speaker 1: of course by the time they realize it's too late,
[1:35:56] Speaker 1: it's wild. But yes, people do fall for the stuff.
[1:35:58] Speaker 1: Employment scams a number two median loss of fifteen hundred dollars.
[1:36:03] Speaker 1: These target often target young job seekers. I get those
[1:36:08] Speaker 1: things all the time. You know, hey, we got a
[1:36:09] Speaker 1: great job for you. It's the text message like come on.
[1:36:12] Speaker 1: If you're responding to that, don't do it. Romance scams
[1:36:16] Speaker 1: number three, Oh wow, highest median loss of any scam
[1:36:19] Speaker 1: at six ninety nine. Online purchase scams dropped to number four.
[1:36:24] Speaker 1: Social media is a major risk. Almost fifty percent of
[1:36:27] Speaker 1: reported scams started when people responded to social media ads
[1:36:31] Speaker 1: or posts. Top impersonated brands, Publishers Clearinghouse, the USPS, PayPal, Amazon,
[1:36:37] Speaker 1: and Spectrum the most faked companies. The takeaway here if
[1:36:42] Speaker 1: someone you meet online wants to help you invest money,
[1:36:44] Speaker 1: it is a scam.
[1:36:47] Speaker 2: And there we go. That's okay. Sound like someone got electrocuted.
[1:36:56] Speaker 1: AI is driving smartphone upgrades. Why do you think all
[1:37:00] Speaker 1: these companies are advertising AI because their numbers are telling
[1:37:02] Speaker 1: them people are buying new phones because of it. Assurant
[1:37:06] Speaker 1: looked at the mobile trade in and industry trends. Let's see,
[1:37:10] Speaker 1: people are holding onto their phones for about three point
[1:37:13] Speaker 1: six years on average now before upgrading. That's forty three months.
[1:37:16] Speaker 1: iPhone owners kept their devices for an average of three
[1:37:20] Speaker 1: point seven eight years previously now it's three point six
[1:37:23] Speaker 1: y three after the launch of the iPhone sixteen, So
[1:37:26] Speaker 1: now it used to be forty five months. iPhone users
[1:37:28] Speaker 1: we're keeping them. Now it's forty four months. Android users
[1:37:32] Speaker 1: kept their devices for three point six seven years. Then
[1:37:35] Speaker 1: when the S twenty four launch, three point three eight years,
[1:37:38] Speaker 1: forty four months versus forty one. So basically, people are
[1:37:41] Speaker 1: upgrading faster now because of AI. AI demand is growing.
[1:37:45] Speaker 1: People want it on their phone. By the way, you
[1:37:47] Speaker 1: can get AI on any phone, just download CHATCHIBT. Daylight
[1:37:51] Speaker 1: saving Time is it daylight saving time?
[1:37:54] Speaker 2: Yeah? It is this weekend.
[1:37:56] Speaker 1: I never understand this, but yes, daylight it's not daylight
[1:37:59] Speaker 1: savings time, it is daylight saving time.
[1:38:01] Speaker 2: I do know that I grew up you know journalism,
[1:38:05] Speaker 2: you know trained.
[1:38:07] Speaker 1: Samsung looked at sleep patterns from their Samsung Health users.
[1:38:10] Speaker 1: They're very clear to say, we got their permission to
[1:38:13] Speaker 1: look at the data. And it's of course anonymized Daylight
[1:38:17] Speaker 1: saving time throws off sleep for weeks, not just one night.
[1:38:21] Speaker 1: People fall asleep thirty three minutes later and they wake
[1:38:24] Speaker 1: up nineteen minutes earlier than night of the change, So
[1:38:27] Speaker 1: be prepared. Probably gonna wake up early. Those in their
[1:38:31] Speaker 1: twenties struggle the most. Even three weeks later, it's still unstable.
[1:38:37] Speaker 1: So it takes a while for our bodies to adjust
[1:38:39] Speaker 1: to all this stuff. And they say that the best
[1:38:41] Speaker 1: way to deal with the change is to prioritize sleep.
[1:38:46] Speaker 1: I know a lot of people that prioritize sleep. You know,
[1:38:49] Speaker 1: that's their deal. They just like to sleep. I'm like,
[1:38:51] Speaker 1: a I like to sleep, but I don't need I don't.
[1:38:54] Speaker 1: I do prioritize it, but I'm not one of those
[1:38:57] Speaker 1: people that's crazy if.
[1:38:58] Speaker 2: I don't get my sleep.
[1:38:59] Speaker 1: Like there's some people I know, I'm not gonna mention
[1:39:01] Speaker 1: names that if they don't get their eight or nine hours, they're.
[1:39:04] Speaker 2: Like, the whole day is just ruined. My whole day.
[1:39:07] Speaker 2: I didn't sleep last night. I didn't sleep, Okay, So.
[1:39:14] Speaker 1: Anyway, I love giving people a hard time about sleep
[1:39:16] Speaker 1: because I wake up very early, and I don't I
[1:39:18] Speaker 1: make light of sleep.
[1:39:19] Speaker 2: I like sleep.
[1:39:20] Speaker 1: I think it's very important for your health. But anyway,
[1:39:22] Speaker 1: all right, let's open up the feedbag. Did you bring
[1:39:25] Speaker 1: a did you bring a sound effect this for the feedbag?
[1:39:29] Speaker 2: There you go.
[1:39:31] Speaker 1: That sounds like the price is right, all right, Kevin
[1:39:37] Speaker 1: from tahatch A Pee rites in rich, I wanted to
[1:39:39] Speaker 1: share an important benefit of the iPhone sixteen E that
[1:39:42] Speaker 1: many may not realize. My son has a pacemaker and
[1:39:45] Speaker 1: is one hundred percent pacemaker dependent. Mag Safe devices can
[1:39:49] Speaker 1: interfere with pacemakers, so he was limited to using an
[1:39:52] Speaker 1: iPhone eleven. Now, with the iPhone sixteen E, he can
[1:39:55] Speaker 1: upgrade without worrying about mag safe while still getting all
[1:39:58] Speaker 1: the latest features he's I had to finally have a
[1:40:01] Speaker 1: newer iPhone. I know he could have switched to Android,
[1:40:03] Speaker 1: but his industry requires him to use an Apple device
[1:40:06] Speaker 1: for text threads.
[1:40:07] Speaker 2: AH see that.
[1:40:09] Speaker 1: This is why I love this show. There's angles that
[1:40:11] Speaker 1: I may not think of. And so yeah, people might say,
[1:40:14] Speaker 1: oh boo the iPhone sixteen and he doesn't have MagSafe.
[1:40:17] Speaker 1: Some people are welcoming that. Eric from Marana Arizona writes
[1:40:21] Speaker 1: in you miss Jeff's issue with nord pass in your
[1:40:25] Speaker 1: last podcast. He was going to a website login page,
[1:40:29] Speaker 1: entering his username and then nord pass generated a password,
[1:40:32] Speaker 1: expecting nord pass to inform the website of the new password.
[1:40:35] Speaker 1: Since the site already had a stored password, the generated
[1:40:37] Speaker 1: one wouldn't work, he needs to log in first as usual,
[1:40:41] Speaker 1: then nord pass will ask if he wants to save
[1:40:43] Speaker 1: that password. The password generator should only be used for
[1:40:45] Speaker 1: setting up a new account or when resetting a password. Well,
[1:40:49] Speaker 1: now I'm confused again. Maybe that's why I didn't understand
[1:40:52] Speaker 1: the question the first time.
[1:40:55] Speaker 2: Let's see.
[1:40:55] Speaker 1: Bob writes in I was listening to your radio show
[1:40:57] Speaker 1: and thought, wow, he is really good. You lead with kindness,
[1:41:00] Speaker 1: never make anyone feel like their question is stupid, and
[1:41:02] Speaker 1: always take the time to answer.
[1:41:04] Speaker 2: You're doing an amazing job, and I just wanted to
[1:41:06] Speaker 2: let you know that. Well, thank you, Bob.
[1:41:08] Speaker 1: Well, I take the time to answer because I'm on
[1:41:10] Speaker 1: the radio anyway, So that makes sense, I guess.
[1:41:13] Speaker 2: But no, thank you for that. I do appreciate it,
[1:41:15] Speaker 2: and I guess we have another nice one.
[1:41:18] Speaker 1: Derek from Wisconsin writes in Rich, I saw your Facebook
[1:41:21] Speaker 1: post about the rude comment from a listener.
[1:41:23] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I posted that.
[1:41:24] Speaker 1: A listener said I didn't respond to their email in time,
[1:41:25] Speaker 1: so they said you lost a listener. I mean it
[1:41:28] Speaker 1: was like a couple of days I missed their email. Okay,
[1:41:31] Speaker 1: I get a lot of emails, I mean a lot.
[1:41:34] Speaker 2: I saw your.
[1:41:35] Speaker 1: Facebook post about that rude comment from a listener. You
[1:41:37] Speaker 1: handled it beautifully. I've been a faithful and appreciative listener
[1:41:40] Speaker 1: for many years. I always enjoy your passion for technology,
[1:41:43] Speaker 1: lighthearted sense of humor. Yes, it is very lighthearted. It's
[1:41:46] Speaker 1: more like dad humor and helpful tips and tricks. Although
[1:41:50] Speaker 1: our paths have never crossed, I can honestly say you
[1:41:53] Speaker 1: are the nicest person I've never met. Oh wow, I
[1:41:57] Speaker 1: don't pay people to write this stuff. Keep up the
[1:41:59] Speaker 1: tremendous work making a very positive difference in the world.
[1:42:02] Speaker 1: Thank you, Derek. That's what I say to my wife
[1:42:05] Speaker 1: every day. You see, I say, I'm making a difference
[1:42:07] Speaker 1: in this world. I'm making a positive, great difference. You
[1:42:13] Speaker 1: may not see it right now, but yes, the world does.
[1:42:16] Speaker 11: No.
[1:42:17] Speaker 2: I'm just you know, look, I love the emails. I
[1:42:19] Speaker 2: do appreciate it.
[1:42:20] Speaker 1: I'm not kidding when I tell you I get emails
[1:42:23] Speaker 1: like this, and they just put a smile on my
[1:42:25] Speaker 1: face because I get it. Like I'm not sitting here
[1:42:28] Speaker 1: on a radio show talking about all the great emails
[1:42:31] Speaker 1: I get from people. Oh wait, yes I am. Okay, well,
[1:42:34] Speaker 1: never mind, okay, I'll stop. That's going to do it
[1:42:37] Speaker 1: for this episode of the show. You can find links
[1:42:38] Speaker 1: to everything I mentioned on the website go to Richontech
[1:42:41] Speaker 1: dot tv. You can find me on social media. I
[1:42:43] Speaker 1: am at rich on tech. Next week we are going
[1:42:46] Speaker 1: to talk about how to spring clean your PC. Maybe
[1:42:49] Speaker 1: you don't want to buy a new one, you just
[1:42:51] Speaker 1: want to make it run like new. We have a
[1:42:53] Speaker 1: great guest that's going to talk about how to spring
[1:42:55] Speaker 1: clean your PC. Kimber streams from the Wirecutter. Plus they're
[1:42:59] Speaker 1: gonna talk about the best laptop for around five hundred bucks.
[1:43:03] Speaker 1: Thank you so much for listening. There are so many
[1:43:05] Speaker 1: ways you can spend your time. I do appreciate you
[1:43:09] Speaker 1: spending it right here with me. Thanks everyone who makes
