[1:16] Speaker 1: All right. Coming up on the show today, We've got
[1:20] Speaker 1: We're gonna take you to tech Crunch Disrupt. This is
[1:23] Speaker 1: a convention up in San Francisco, where I was this week.
[1:27] Speaker 1: We'll talk to some innovative startups and of course TechCrunch
[1:30] Speaker 1: editor in chief Connie Loysis. Then a little bit later
[1:34] Speaker 1: in the show, we're going to talk to Apple's Health
[1:35] Speaker 1: and Watch product marketing director dedre Callbeck. She is going
[1:39] Speaker 1: to discuss the new AirPods Pro Hearing Aid feature. They
[1:43] Speaker 1: also have hearing protection and I did take the test.
[1:46] Speaker 1: I'll tell you what my results were later on in
[1:48] Speaker 1: the show. And later in the show, social media cyber
[1:52] Speaker 1: security influencer Caitlin Serian, known as cyber Security Girl, will
[1:56] Speaker 1: join us with some online safety tips. Well, hopefully you
[2:01] Speaker 1: had an excellent Halloween. I know I did with the kids.
[2:05] Speaker 1: It's just wild. We've been doing Halloween with the same
[2:08] Speaker 1: group of friends now for thirteen years and it's just wild.
[2:11] Speaker 1: Like all of our kids have grown up and it
[2:14] Speaker 1: became you know, like when we first started, the kids
[2:16] Speaker 1: would just make it down like you know, three or
[2:18] Speaker 1: four houses on the street. Now we're walking all over
[2:21] Speaker 1: the place. And it's just a whole different ballgame. They're
[2:23] Speaker 1: going by themselves for an hour. So it's really been
[2:26] Speaker 1: fun to watch that progression. I really enjoy Halloween. I
[2:28] Speaker 1: think it's one of the sort of universal fun holidays
[2:31] Speaker 1: for a lot of people because you could just let
[2:34] Speaker 1: loose as an adult or a kid. It's equally fun
[2:36] Speaker 1: for both. But I do tell you this for a reason.
[2:40] Speaker 1: It is the November slide into the holidays. We're into November,
[2:44] Speaker 1: and I'm telling you the holidays will be here before
[2:47] Speaker 1: you know it. So start that planning now for the
[2:49] Speaker 1: gifts and the things you want to get. Because here's
[2:51] Speaker 1: what I do. Like I did on Halloween, I was
[2:54] Speaker 1: literally shopping for my Halloween costume the morning of Halloween.
[2:58] Speaker 1: Why did I wait until the morning of Halloween, I
[3:00] Speaker 1: don't know. I had so many days before Halloween. I
[3:03] Speaker 1: decorated the house the very first day you could legally speaking,
[3:07] Speaker 1: which is like, you know, the first weekend in October.
[3:09] Speaker 1: I think whatever it was. I was like, all right,
[3:11] Speaker 1: it's a cool day in la I'm decorating the house.
[3:13] Speaker 1: And so I did that, and of course I'll take
[3:15] Speaker 1: down those decorations and I'll put up the Christmas decorations
[3:19] Speaker 1: right away. Because I'm that person I like to get
[3:21] Speaker 1: the maximum. It is a lot of work to put
[3:24] Speaker 1: the decorations out and to put them back, take them back,
[3:26] Speaker 1: and so I like to get the maximum time out
[3:28] Speaker 1: of those decorations. But when the holiday's over, I am done.
[3:32] Speaker 1: I want those things out of my sight. So anyway,
[3:35] Speaker 1: get ready for the slide into the holidays. You heard
[3:37] Speaker 1: it here first. It is happening very very quickly. This week.
[3:41] Speaker 1: It's all about Apple. I know, before you send me
[3:44] Speaker 1: those angry emails. Hey, you were there when I talked
[3:47] Speaker 1: about Pixel, you were there when I talked about Samsung.
[3:50] Speaker 1: This show offers equal coverage to all of the major
[3:54] Speaker 1: tech companies. This happens to be Apple's week because they
[3:57] Speaker 1: launched a lot of new stuff. First off, Apple Intelligence.
[4:01] Speaker 1: I'll tell you about that, and then i'll get into
[4:02] Speaker 1: the new Mac computers as well. So let's start with
[4:06] Speaker 1: Apple Intelligence. Maybe you're already playing with this on your smartphone,
[4:09] Speaker 1: on your iPhone. This is on the iPhone fifteen Pro
[4:13] Speaker 1: models and above, so iPhone fifteen Pro, Promax and the
[4:16] Speaker 1: iPhone sixteen models. So you have to update your software
[4:20] Speaker 1: to iOS eighteen point one, and then you have to
[4:23] Speaker 1: opt into Apple Intelligence in the settings. There's a new
[4:26] Speaker 1: setting after you update your phone called Apple Intelligence, and
[4:29] Speaker 1: Siri you say yes, I want to be in, and
[4:32] Speaker 1: then it will take you on a little wait list
[4:34] Speaker 1: and suddenly your phone will say, oh, you got it.
[4:36] Speaker 1: A couple hours later, and now you have access to
[4:38] Speaker 1: these things. Here's what you can do today. Enhanced writing tools.
[4:42] Speaker 1: That's number one. So anywhere you see a blinker a
[4:46] Speaker 1: cursor blinking on the iPhone, you now have access to
[4:49] Speaker 1: these new writing tools. So you can select them some
[4:52] Speaker 1: text and you can rewrite it. You can summarize it,
[4:55] Speaker 1: you can make it a list, a table. You can
[4:58] Speaker 1: use AI driven grammar adjustments. So I was talking to
[5:01] Speaker 1: grammarly up in San Francisco. I said, ah, is this
[5:04] Speaker 1: kind of like really bad for your business because it's
[5:07] Speaker 1: now built into the iPhone And from my experience, yeah,
[5:11] Speaker 1: it's probably not a good thing. They said they were
[5:14] Speaker 1: focusing more on business at this point because that's where
[5:16] Speaker 1: the growth is. I guess. So you got those enhanced
[5:19] Speaker 1: writing tools, that's probably the biggest thing. Like if you
[5:21] Speaker 1: write something on Facebook or Instagram, you can highlight your
[5:24] Speaker 1: text and proof free to summarize it. Change it, make
[5:27] Speaker 1: it friendly, make it fun, make it business, whatever you want.
[5:31] Speaker 1: That's throughout the whole phone. Now you've got a new
[5:34] Speaker 1: natural series. So when you bring up Siri this time,
[5:36] Speaker 1: by pressing the side button, your phone is going to
[5:39] Speaker 1: glow around the edges. That's kind of like the new thing.
[5:41] Speaker 1: That's what they were teasing when they called the event
[5:44] Speaker 1: glow time. Of course, none of this stuff was ready
[5:47] Speaker 1: in time, so it was a really off sync, very
[5:50] Speaker 1: rare miss for Apple in this respect, but that's what happened,
[5:53] Speaker 1: and now it all makes sense why they were so
[5:55] Speaker 1: into the glowing stuff when there was no glowing stuff
[5:57] Speaker 1: when it came to the new iPhones until a month later.
[6:01] Speaker 1: So now they glow. So when you bring up Siri,
[6:03] Speaker 1: she glows, and that's very exciting, I guess. But Siri
[6:09] Speaker 1: has gotten smarter, like Apple has said for ten years
[6:11] Speaker 1: now and I haven't seen it, but it's supposedly smarter.
[6:16] Speaker 1: And you can also do this to it. So if
[6:18] Speaker 1: you're saying something like setting a timer and you say, oh,
[6:21] Speaker 1: set a timer for five I mean seven, I mean
[6:24] Speaker 1: nine minutes, Siri will understand what you're trying to say.
[6:27] Speaker 1: That you just wanted that timer for nine minutes, whereas
[6:29] Speaker 1: before you might have gotten an error back photos app.
[6:32] Speaker 1: I know it's very confusing the redesign of the photos
[6:34] Speaker 1: app that is still being worked through. My advice there
[6:37] Speaker 1: is to scroll all the way to the bottom and
[6:39] Speaker 1: use the customization option, get rid of all the nonsense
[6:42] Speaker 1: that Apple added, and just get the most important stuff
[6:44] Speaker 1: to you, which for me is basically just recent photos
[6:47] Speaker 1: of my favorite photos. But that may vary depending on
[6:50] Speaker 1: what you need. But now when you search in the
[6:53] Speaker 1: Photos app, you can search by describing stuff inside your photos,
[6:57] Speaker 1: so that will work for photos and videos. So if
[6:59] Speaker 1: you want someone in a red bathing suit jumping into
[7:01] Speaker 1: a pool, you can search that and it will find
[7:04] Speaker 1: that picture for you. The cleanup tool, this is probably
[7:07] Speaker 1: the thing that you might use the most. This is
[7:09] Speaker 1: what we saw come to Samsung and Pixel months ago.
[7:13] Speaker 1: Now it is available maybe years ago on the Pixel,
[7:16] Speaker 1: but this is now available on the iPhone. So if
[7:19] Speaker 1: you go in to edit a photo, you'll see a
[7:21] Speaker 1: new cleanup tool and it will erase unwanted objects and
[7:24] Speaker 1: images from your unwanted objects and people from your images
[7:29] Speaker 1: very simply, very easily. It works really well, again it
[7:32] Speaker 1: glows when you kind of brush over the thing that
[7:34] Speaker 1: you want to erase. So again there's that glow, and
[7:37] Speaker 1: so that works. I mean it's pretty good. It's not perfect,
[7:40] Speaker 1: but it works pretty well. Then everything is sort of
[7:43] Speaker 1: prioritized and summarized when it comes to your notifications and
[7:46] Speaker 1: your emails. So you'll notice your notifications are sort of
[7:49] Speaker 1: summarized and also grouped together, which I really like. You
[7:53] Speaker 1: can also get priority email notifications. But again, think about this.
[7:57] Speaker 1: All the features I've talked about, except for the writing,
[8:00] Speaker 1: really pushes you deeper into that Apple ecosystem. You're not
[8:03] Speaker 1: going to get a lot of these summarizations and things
[8:05] Speaker 1: if you're not using Apple Mail, if you're not using
[8:08] Speaker 1: Apple messages, if you're not using Apple Photos. See what's
[8:11] Speaker 1: happening here. It's Apple Intelligence. They're locking you even deeper
[8:15] Speaker 1: into that Apple ecosystem. If you're all in it, it's great,
[8:18] Speaker 1: it's gonna work very nicely. But for someone like myself
[8:20] Speaker 1: who's using mostly Google products for my mail and my photos,
[8:26] Speaker 1: and I use third party apps for mostly everything, this
[8:28] Speaker 1: is not going to work so well because when I'm
[8:30] Speaker 1: searching for stuff, it's not looking an iCloud. It's not
[8:33] Speaker 1: looking in the photos app, it's not looking in the
[8:36] Speaker 1: notes app on the iPhone, it's not able to look
[8:39] Speaker 1: in the apps that I'm using. So maybe in the
[8:42] Speaker 1: future they'll log hook into some of these third party
[8:45] Speaker 1: apps as well. Okay, this is pretty cool. In your
[8:49] Speaker 1: phone app, you can now record phone calls and transcribe them.
[8:52] Speaker 1: This is great for myself as a journalist because I
[8:55] Speaker 1: was on the phone with a PR person. I said, hey,
[8:56] Speaker 1: do you mind if I record this call. It's much easier.
[8:58] Speaker 1: I don't have to take notes. So now you can
[9:00] Speaker 1: record the calls, not only get the recording of that conversation,
[9:04] Speaker 1: but also get the full transcript and summarized notes. I
[9:08] Speaker 1: find that the notes are a little hit or miss,
[9:10] Speaker 1: but this is just the beginning. You can also record
[9:13] Speaker 1: and summarize just regular audio recordings on your phone as well,
[9:16] Speaker 1: which is really nice. Coming soon. This is coming in December.
[9:20] Speaker 1: Those personalized emojis, they call them gen moojis, so you'll
[9:24] Speaker 1: be able to create an emoji of anything you want.
[9:26] Speaker 1: So if you want to fish swimming on a bagel,
[9:29] Speaker 1: you can make that. If you're chatting with someone, it
[9:31] Speaker 1: will even suggest things in your chats to make emoji's
[9:34] Speaker 1: access to Chat GIBT, so Siri will connect to chat
[9:38] Speaker 1: GBT come December. And then of course visual intelligence. You
[9:42] Speaker 1: can actually scan things kind of like Google Lens using
[9:44] Speaker 1: the iPhone camera, and they'll have an image playground as
[9:48] Speaker 1: well where you can generate images. I got a preview
[9:50] Speaker 1: of that at the Apple event this week here in
[9:52] Speaker 1: LA and Apple's doing a really nice job with their
[9:55] Speaker 1: image generation. It's very very like Hollywood esque, like they
[10:00] Speaker 1: did a really nice job. Uh So that's it. That's
[10:03] Speaker 1: the Apple Intelligence. That's what you can do with it
[10:06] Speaker 1: right now. Is it groundbreaking, It's good for iPhone users.
[10:09] Speaker 1: I think. Is it as amazing as what we have
[10:12] Speaker 1: on the Pixel and the Samsung. I think it's similar.
[10:15] Speaker 1: I think that some things are better, some things are
[10:17] Speaker 1: a little worse, And you know, at the end of
[10:20] Speaker 1: the day, I think what Apple does best is make
[10:23] Speaker 1: you work with Apple products more and more. So that's
[10:26] Speaker 1: that coming up. I will tell you about the Apple computers.
[10:30] Speaker 1: They have some new Apple Mac computers. I'll tell you
[10:32] Speaker 1: about that. Plus Microsoft is tossing a lifeline to Windows
[10:36] Speaker 1: ten users. I'll have that. Plus your calls at Triple
[10:38] Speaker 1: eight rich one O one that's eight eight eight seven
[10:42] Speaker 1: four to two four one zero one. Welcome back to
[10:46] Speaker 1: Rich on Tech. Rich Demiro here hanging out with you,
[10:49] Speaker 1: talking technology at Triple eight Rich one O one that's
[10:53] Speaker 1: eight eight eight seven four to two four one zero one.
[10:58] Speaker 1: Phone lines are open. Give me a call if you
[11:00] Speaker 1: have a question about technology. And if you've noticed we
[11:06] Speaker 1: are doing songs that are bobo. Did you know what
[11:09] Speaker 1: these songs are? Can you tell they are? They're crowd
[11:13] Speaker 1: pleasing karaoke songs. That's what I tried to fit. Yeah,
[11:17] Speaker 1: so my my go to is always, uh, don't stop
[11:22] Speaker 1: believing what's yours? So it makes a lot baby got back. Yeah,
[11:28] Speaker 1: that's always always if you want to get that crowd
[11:31] Speaker 1: going right, that's the song. All right, let's go to
[11:34] Speaker 1: uh Dennis in Pasadena, California. Dennis, you're on with Rich.
[11:39] Speaker 2: Hey, Rich, thank you stick my call. Hey, So I
[11:42] Speaker 2: have air I have air Pods Pro second generation. I
[11:48] Speaker 2: have an Apple iPhone sixteen Pro and I just did the.
[11:55] Speaker 3: Hearing test a couple of days ago.
[11:57] Speaker 2: I guess you know, maybe uh I heard that they
[12:02] Speaker 2: there was a way that uh the AirPods, the AirPods
[12:05] Speaker 2: could help with a little bit of hearing loss, which
[12:08] Speaker 2: I do have.
[12:10] Speaker 1: Anyway, how is the test result.
[12:12] Speaker 2: Well, it's funny. It's said there was no uh, did
[12:17] Speaker 2: not detect hearing loss.
[12:18] Speaker 3: And I know I have hearing loss.
[12:19] Speaker 1: I'm a musician, so that's not good. That's good.
[12:24] Speaker 2: Here's the thing. Ever, since I did that test, I'm
[12:28] Speaker 2: noticing that I'm my air pods are distorting when I'm
[12:33] Speaker 2: talking to someone on the phone, Like you know what
[12:36] Speaker 2: digital distortion sounds like, when it's maxing out a little bit,
[12:40] Speaker 2: you get like a glitch. Yeah, hearing that in the
[12:44] Speaker 2: in the air pods only when I'm speaking on the
[12:47] Speaker 2: phone and it's the voice of the person that i'm
[12:50] Speaker 2: speaking with, Like right now, I'm hearing it speaking to you, so.
[12:53] Speaker 1: You can, okay, when I talked to when I talk
[12:57] Speaker 1: to you, it sounds garbled and kind of messed up digitized.
[13:00] Speaker 2: It's not garbled.
[13:02] Speaker 3: It's just every once in a while hear a little okay.
[13:05] Speaker 1: Well, it sounds it sounds like maybe something happened when
[13:09] Speaker 1: you did this hearing test, like maybe one of the
[13:11] Speaker 1: settings got changed on your phone as a result of
[13:15] Speaker 1: this test. I'm not sure. It could be just pure
[13:17] Speaker 1: coincidence that this is happening. But here are the steps
[13:19] Speaker 1: that I would take to sort of troubleshoot this and
[13:22] Speaker 1: reset things and get them back to normal. So first off,
[13:25] Speaker 1: I would go into your settings, the accessibility settings under
[13:29] Speaker 1: audio and visual there is something called headphone accommodations, so
[13:33] Speaker 1: you can see if there's any sort of and you
[13:37] Speaker 1: can search for all this stuff. By the way, you
[13:39] Speaker 1: can just search for headphone accommodations and settings and then
[13:42] Speaker 1: see if that's turned on. And so if that's turned on,
[13:45] Speaker 1: that might be that might be doing it, So I
[13:48] Speaker 1: would turn that off and that might get you back
[13:50] Speaker 1: to normal. And by the way, before you do anything,
[13:53] Speaker 1: just go ahead and restart your phone. So that's like
[13:56] Speaker 1: number one. Before you do anything, just restart your phone.
[13:59] Speaker 1: Then the second thing to check is the equalizer setting.
[14:02] Speaker 1: So if you just type in on your search again
[14:05] Speaker 1: eq and this is in the music app so this
[14:09] Speaker 1: may not apply to your calls, but you can see
[14:12] Speaker 1: if you have any sort of equalizer settings on. And
[14:15] Speaker 1: then if none of that works, I would probably do
[14:18] Speaker 1: a reset of all of your settings. So you can
[14:21] Speaker 1: go into Settings general reset reset all settings, and that
[14:26] Speaker 1: will reset pretty much all of these settings that you've
[14:28] Speaker 1: customized on your phone. Now, I know it's a little extreme,
[14:32] Speaker 1: but if you want this to work again, that might
[14:34] Speaker 1: be what you have to do. So you can do
[14:36] Speaker 1: that as well. This will reset sort of a lot
[14:38] Speaker 1: of things on your phone, like the Wi Fi passwords,
[14:41] Speaker 1: the Bluetooth connections, So only do that as the last resort.
[14:46] Speaker 1: You can also try a reset of the air pods,
[14:50] Speaker 1: and so let's see can you reset There's got to
[14:52] Speaker 1: be a way to force a restart of AirPods. This says,
[14:56] Speaker 1: let's see how to reset your AirPods and AirPods pro.
[15:00] Speaker 1: So I would do that as well, and that involves
[15:03] Speaker 1: putting your putting them in their case, waiting thirty seconds
[15:07] Speaker 1: and then let's see here tap forget this device, and
[15:11] Speaker 1: so I would do that, and then you can press
[15:13] Speaker 1: the setup button on the front to repair those. So
[15:16] Speaker 1: I would probably try that first before you do anything.
[15:19] Speaker 1: So first reset your phone. Then I would disconnect the AirPods,
[15:23] Speaker 1: reconnect them, and then I would go into the other
[15:26] Speaker 1: things where you're resetting all the settings and hopefully that
[15:28] Speaker 1: fixes it. I know what you're talking about. When it's
[15:31] Speaker 1: when you get something like this, it's very frustrating because
[15:34] Speaker 1: my wife sometimes she'll call me in my car and
[15:37] Speaker 1: whatever forever, whatever reason, the connections all garbily and she'll
[15:41] Speaker 1: just be like, oh, you sound like a monster, and
[15:43] Speaker 1: all you have to do is just disconnect and call
[15:45] Speaker 1: back and it works fine. So these things happen. I mean,
[15:48] Speaker 1: none of this stuff is perfect. And there was an update.
[15:51] Speaker 1: You must have gotten it obviously on the AirPods. There
[15:54] Speaker 1: was an AirPods software update that also enabled the change
[15:58] Speaker 1: for that hearing test. So good question, Dennis. Thanks a
[16:02] Speaker 1: lot for the call today. Do appreciate it. I took
[16:04] Speaker 1: the hearing test as well. I will tell you how
[16:07] Speaker 1: that went a little bit later on when we talked
[16:08] Speaker 1: to Apple's Dedra Callbeck about this test. She's going to
[16:12] Speaker 1: explain what it's all about. Yeah, So if you run
[16:16] Speaker 1: Microsoft Windows ten, you've got a little bit of a lifeline,
[16:20] Speaker 1: but you're gonna have to pay for it. So Windows
[16:23] Speaker 1: Microsoft is giving you an extra year of security updates
[16:27] Speaker 1: for thirty dollars. So official support ends next October October fourteenth,
[16:32] Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, and they've announced that consumers can purchase
[16:36] Speaker 1: an extended security updates for thirty dollars for one year only.
[16:42] Speaker 1: So do you think Windows updates are worth thirty dollars
[16:44] Speaker 1: for a year? I don't think so. But you know,
[16:48] Speaker 1: if you want to be protected for one more year,
[16:49] Speaker 1: maybe you have a certain mission critical program that you're
[16:52] Speaker 1: running on there that you do not want to switch
[16:54] Speaker 1: to Windows eleven with, that will be a good way
[16:57] Speaker 1: to do it. Business is totally completely different. They have
[17:00] Speaker 1: different pricing sixty one dollars for the first year, and
[17:02] Speaker 1: then they have options for the next two years. After that.
[17:06] Speaker 1: You won't get any new features or bug fixes or
[17:08] Speaker 1: tech support, but you will get critical important security updates
[17:12] Speaker 1: for another year. Eighty eight rich one O one eight
[17:15] Speaker 1: eight eight seven four to two four to one zero one.
[17:19] Speaker 1: This is rich on Tech. Welcome back to rich on Tech.
[17:24] Speaker 1: Rich DeMuro here hanging out with you, talking technology at
[17:27] Speaker 1: triple eight rich one oh one. That's eight eight eight
[17:31] Speaker 1: seven four to two four to one zero one. Give
[17:34] Speaker 1: me a call if you have a question about technology.
[17:36] Speaker 1: We will get back to those phone lines in just
[17:38] Speaker 1: a bit. But first, this week I was in San
[17:41] Speaker 1: Francisco to attend tech Crunch Disrupt. This is a gathering
[17:46] Speaker 1: of tech innovators, founders and visionaries and Connie Loysis is
[17:51] Speaker 1: editor in chief at tech Crunch. First I talked with
[17:53] Speaker 1: her about the hottest topic at the show, which is AI,
[17:57] Speaker 1: of course, and what makes this event so special.
[18:01] Speaker 4: Tech Crunch really is about giving people a front road
[18:04] Speaker 4: of the future of technology. And so what's wonderful about
[18:07] Speaker 4: Disrupt where we are right now, is it brings the
[18:10] Speaker 4: people that are focused on the site and that community
[18:14] Speaker 4: here in one place. It's founders, it's seasoned operators, it's
[18:18] Speaker 4: investors who want to look at the next thing, and
[18:21] Speaker 4: there's really no better place to network. There's like ten
[18:24] Speaker 4: thousand people on site, many of them local, but many
[18:27] Speaker 4: of them from a variety of countries. I think we
[18:29] Speaker 4: have at least thirty five countries are represented here. So
[18:32] Speaker 4: it's really really exciting.
[18:33] Speaker 5: I think we come for a variety of reasons.
[18:35] Speaker 4: I mean, I think especially this year, they're very focused
[18:37] Speaker 4: on trying to understand what's happening in AI from an
[18:40] Speaker 4: ethics and policy standpoint, in terms of how it's impacting
[18:44] Speaker 4: traditional industries. Really all of those sectors are talking about
[18:48] Speaker 4: the same thing, which is AI. I mean, AI is
[18:51] Speaker 4: basically the Internet, it's mobile, It's undergirds everything, and people
[18:55] Speaker 4: are just trying to understand what's happening because it's impacting
[18:58] Speaker 4: things so rapidly.
[19:00] Speaker 6: You know.
[19:00] Speaker 4: I've always found the people the most fascinating. I mean,
[19:03] Speaker 4: I had the privilege of covering this industry for more
[19:07] Speaker 4: than twenty years, and the players keep changing and they
[19:10] Speaker 4: are fascinating. I mean, it's interesting. I just find some
[19:15] Speaker 4: of the most effective leaders are the best storytellers. So
[19:20] Speaker 4: you know, Sam Altman, for example of open Ai is
[19:23] Speaker 4: a wonderful storyteller, and Vinodakosla is a really fascinating character.
[19:29] Speaker 4: There's just so many people that are so important to
[19:33] Speaker 4: the future of the world. Candidly, who are are here?
[19:38] Speaker 4: I think that people make the product absolutely. I think
[19:41] Speaker 4: people have to a be great storytellers where they have
[19:44] Speaker 4: to be solving a problem that people need, and they
[19:47] Speaker 4: have to be able to motivate people. They have to
[19:49] Speaker 4: be able to sort of get investors on board and
[19:51] Speaker 4: entrepreneurs on board and also interest people like myself.
[19:55] Speaker 5: At tech Crunch.
[19:57] Speaker 1: Next up, I spoke with Christian from the Electronic Front
[20:00] Speaker 1: It's Your Foundation. This is a nonprofit fighting for our
[20:03] Speaker 1: digital rights.
[20:05] Speaker 7: EFF is a nonprofit that essentially fights to make sure
[20:08] Speaker 7: that you have your rights when you go online, So
[20:10] Speaker 7: we fight for privacy, free speech, right to repair, that
[20:13] Speaker 7: kind of stuff. So we're here today spreading the word
[20:16] Speaker 7: about our work, accepting donations, all that kind of fun stuff.
[20:19] Speaker 7: We're really trying to push for a better comprehensive consumer
[20:22] Speaker 7: privacy law in the United States to try and help
[20:25] Speaker 7: people stay on end to end encrypted messaging, make sure
[20:28] Speaker 7: that data brokers can't take your location data, all that
[20:31] Speaker 7: kind of fun stuff.
[20:32] Speaker 1: Now, I thought this was a really interesting startup. It's
[20:35] Speaker 1: called Romanto, and they're helping families preserve their precious memories.
[20:40] Speaker 8: Well, Romatto is all about capturing and preserving your family stories.
[20:45] Speaker 1: So we're basically helping you.
[20:49] Speaker 8: Find stories that your parents have by helping you choose
[20:53] Speaker 8: questions for them, and then we sends those questions to them.
[20:56] Speaker 8: Every week, they record themselves answering the question, and we
[21:00] Speaker 8: turned these recordings into written stories that we then print
[21:05] Speaker 8: into a hardcover book.
[21:09] Speaker 9: That hard coppet books that show R codes that you
[21:12] Speaker 9: can then scan.
[21:13] Speaker 8: To view the original recording. And so that way you
[21:18] Speaker 8: have a beautiful keepsake book physically in your room, in
[21:22] Speaker 8: your living room, for example, but you can also always
[21:26] Speaker 8: hear the voice behind those stories by scanning the chart.
[21:31] Speaker 9: So that story is my co founder story.
[21:33] Speaker 8: So his dad died during ninety eleven and he never
[21:37] Speaker 8: got a chance.
[21:38] Speaker 9: To hear his dad stories unfortunately.
[21:41] Speaker 8: And then his mom was diagnosed with a fairly bleak
[21:45] Speaker 8: cancer cancer, and so he decided to just interview her
[21:52] Speaker 8: and try to get as much info out of his
[21:56] Speaker 8: mom as he could, mostly for his children, so that
[21:58] Speaker 8: they would know his their grandma. She's alive, she's fine.
[22:03] Speaker 8: It makes it way easier. We've iterated on many approaches
[22:07] Speaker 8: to actually get people to record these stories and get
[22:12] Speaker 8: people to ask their parents to record these stories. It's
[22:15] Speaker 8: a bit of an awkward process depending on how you
[22:18] Speaker 8: approach it. We made it a gift that was it
[22:20] Speaker 8: was like, here's a gift for you, mom, right, so
[22:24] Speaker 8: it feels perfectly natural, and for their parents it feels like,
[22:28] Speaker 8: you know, you're showing them love by wanting to get
[22:31] Speaker 8: to know them better. And a lot of those parents
[22:34] Speaker 8: are like willing to get over the bit of awkwardness
[22:37] Speaker 8: that they feel initially to be like, all right, I'll
[22:39] Speaker 8: share my story with you.
[22:41] Speaker 1: At events like these. You used to exchange physical business
[22:44] Speaker 1: cards and I'm sure many people still do, but a
[22:46] Speaker 1: lot of that has changed. People are now scanning their
[22:49] Speaker 1: LinkedIn QR codes or they're using a digital business card.
[22:53] Speaker 10: Yeah.
[22:53] Speaker 6: So Hi Hello is a digital business card and branding platform.
[22:57] Speaker 6: So instead of carrying on paper cards, you can just
[23:00] Speaker 6: use a QR code and share everything with people. You
[23:03] Speaker 6: can share LinkedIn personal info, everything like that. We also
[23:06] Speaker 6: offer like email signatures, virtual backgrounds, so it comes with
[23:09] Speaker 6: the whole package and you can brand it anyway and
[23:12] Speaker 6: the branding is consistent across.
[23:14] Speaker 1: All these platforms.
[23:15] Speaker 9: Yeah, so you don't need.
[23:16] Speaker 6: To carry around anything. It's just all on your phone,
[23:18] Speaker 6: so it's super easy. And then whether or not the
[23:21] Speaker 6: other person has the app or not, they can download
[23:23] Speaker 6: your contacts super easily. And then if you have the app,
[23:26] Speaker 6: it's great because you can keep your contacts all in
[23:28] Speaker 6: one place.
[23:29] Speaker 5: And if you're a company, you can.
[23:30] Speaker 6: Even integrate it with your CRM, so all your leads
[23:33] Speaker 6: come in into the same spot, which is great Yeah,
[23:35] Speaker 6: across conferences and everything.
[23:37] Speaker 1: I also like an app named Poppel. They do a
[23:39] Speaker 1: pretty good digital business card. Next up, I talked to
[23:42] Speaker 1: two young Harvard founders about their startup called mab Lab,
[23:45] Speaker 1: which is making test strips to detect spiked drinks.
[23:49] Speaker 11: Hi, my name is Fienna Sparks. I'm the CEO and
[23:52] Speaker 11: co founder of mab Blob. Yeah, so here mad Blob.
[23:54] Speaker 11: We're building test trips to look like this, which tests
[23:56] Speaker 11: for spike drinks and lead drugs, be able to test
[24:00] Speaker 11: the fine most likely in common relation agents.
[24:02] Speaker 1: Likely to cause a deadly overdose.
[24:04] Speaker 10: Yeah.
[24:04] Speaker 11: Revel was inspired after my co founder and I lost
[24:06] Speaker 11: a close friends to a jog overdose a little over
[24:08] Speaker 11: two years ago.
[24:10] Speaker 9: And is this where do you see this being used?
[24:12] Speaker 10: Yeah?
[24:12] Speaker 11: So, we're primarily targeting selling the university health services, harm
[24:15] Speaker 11: production centers, so nonprofits in the greater community, and may
[24:19] Speaker 11: mainly being able to have as many consumers as possible,
[24:21] Speaker 11: being able to use our touch trip, and being as
[24:22] Speaker 11: accessible as possible to as many people. Yeah, so you
[24:25] Speaker 11: pick up a test trip could be at your local
[24:27] Speaker 11: student health services, or it could be higher way at
[24:29] Speaker 11: CBS Walgreens on the way to a music festival. You'd
[24:32] Speaker 11: be able to quickly be able to test and drinks
[24:34] Speaker 11: if someone gave you whether it's been spiked or not,
[24:36] Speaker 11: or if the drug, being able to quickly test the
[24:37] Speaker 11: drug what it's Tamia at least some stance like fentanyl
[24:40] Speaker 11: or zalazy that could potentially harm you as a little
[24:42] Speaker 11: as two to three grades.
[24:44] Speaker 1: Finally, I spoke with Richard Sanders of Astreas and at
[24:47] Speaker 1: an event like this, if you want to get someone's attention,
[24:50] Speaker 1: try putting out some chocolates, which is exactly what they did.
[24:54] Speaker 12: So as there's an AI power give a performance coach, right,
[24:58] Speaker 12: So what you see that the space candies are really
[25:00] Speaker 12: our first iteration of curated chocolates, right, So they have
[25:05] Speaker 12: all the micro nutrients that an elite performer, where a
[25:08] Speaker 12: surgeon or astronaut requires to do their day to day
[25:12] Speaker 12: high cognitive tasks. Right, So that the platform that we're
[25:15] Speaker 12: curating is meant to be to democratize the need for
[25:21] Speaker 12: a nutritionists to dietitian a performance code through how do
[25:24] Speaker 12: I power all that into an app so that a
[25:27] Speaker 12: normal user can get those recommendations and that information.
[25:31] Speaker 9: Right.
[25:32] Speaker 12: I can't really afford nine people to tell me how
[25:34] Speaker 12: to live a better than healthy performance life, right, but
[25:37] Speaker 12: I have goals.
[25:38] Speaker 9: I want to train.
[25:39] Speaker 12: For an iron Man or I want to do This
[25:41] Speaker 12: iteration is based off so we've worked with NASA astronauts.
[25:45] Speaker 12: This iteration is actually on the ISS Space station right
[25:48] Speaker 12: now with astronauts. We've worked with surgeons, to neurosurgeons and
[25:53] Speaker 12: former instative like high performing athletes.
[25:56] Speaker 10: So this is.
[25:58] Speaker 9: Profiled out of that day.
[26:00] Speaker 13: Right.
[26:00] Speaker 12: So in the future, the idea is to create personalized
[26:03] Speaker 12: nutrition for the user.
[26:06] Speaker 9: Right, So what is your goals? What do you need
[26:08] Speaker 9: to do?
[26:09] Speaker 12: So whether it's better sleep or for females.
[26:13] Speaker 9: Whether it's better skin, better hair.
[26:14] Speaker 12: We have skews we're working on that have different ingredients,
[26:18] Speaker 12: so instead of taking seventeen vitamins, you're taking one delicious chocolate.
[26:23] Speaker 1: There you have an innovation. At tech Crunch Disrupt twenty
[26:26] Speaker 1: twenty four, there is one theme I noticed behind every
[26:30] Speaker 1: tech breakthrough is usually a human story and a desire
[26:34] Speaker 1: to solve a real world problem. Phone lines are open
[26:37] Speaker 1: triple eight rich one oh one. That's eight eight eight
[26:41] Speaker 1: seven four to two four one zero one. Give me
[26:43] Speaker 1: a call if you have a question about technology. My
[26:45] Speaker 1: name is rich Damiro and this is rich on Tech.
[26:50] Speaker 1: Welcome back to rich on Tech. Rich Demiro here hanging
[26:52] Speaker 1: out with you talking technology. The phone line triple eight
[26:56] Speaker 1: rich one O one that's eight eight eight seven four
[26:58] Speaker 1: to two four one one zero one. The website for
[27:02] Speaker 1: the show is rich on tech dot tv. While you're there,
[27:06] Speaker 1: to be sure to sign up for my free newsletter. Also,
[27:09] Speaker 1: if you want links to anything I mentioned in the show,
[27:11] Speaker 1: you can hit the light bulb at the top of
[27:13] Speaker 1: the page. This is show number ninety six. So if
[27:17] Speaker 1: you want some of the startups I just mentioned at
[27:19] Speaker 1: tech Crunch, you can get the links there. Uh. And
[27:23] Speaker 1: then finally, if you want to email me, you can
[27:25] Speaker 1: hit contact to get in touch. That way, let's go
[27:28] Speaker 1: to Mike and Tucson. Mike, you're on with rich Hey.
[27:32] Speaker 3: Rich Hey actually follved a little bit of it while
[27:35] Speaker 3: on hold. But the bottom line is okay, if I
[27:38] Speaker 3: have desk top PC unning the windows tam it up
[27:40] Speaker 3: good Windows eleven at a year and a half of doom.
[27:43] Speaker 3: But the bottom line is I noticed about four months
[27:45] Speaker 3: ago my Chrome started stop like going to websites, I
[27:50] Speaker 3: couldn't get anywhere, okay to try me nuts and so
[27:53] Speaker 3: past three or four months I've been using Mozella, Firefox
[27:56] Speaker 3: and Fine. About a day and a half ago, like
[28:00] Speaker 3: I couldn't get out to like anything all right. And
[28:03] Speaker 3: the other thing to throw in a range is I
[28:05] Speaker 3: noticed when this started happening four months ago. If I
[28:08] Speaker 3: tried to scan a file with Windows Defender, like right
[28:11] Speaker 3: click and open it, I would just get Instead of
[28:13] Speaker 3: Windows Defender opening, I just got like a white box.
[28:17] Speaker 3: It just wouldn't it just wouldn't work.
[28:20] Speaker 13: Byte.
[28:20] Speaker 3: I took it off the other day. One thing I
[28:23] Speaker 3: trouble to shoot it while on hold is driving me
[28:25] Speaker 3: nuts because I have like almost, you know, nine hundred
[28:28] Speaker 3: make speed to Comcast. One thing I did is on
[28:32] Speaker 3: the back of my desktop and I tried trouble shooting.
[28:35] Speaker 3: I tried set me my DNS settings all and said,
[28:39] Speaker 3: I unplugged the Ethernet cable behind my desktop. There's a
[28:44] Speaker 3: plug into the router and now I'm going Wi Fi
[28:48] Speaker 3: and everything works perfect.
[28:50] Speaker 1: Ah, okay, so is my speeds.
[28:53] Speaker 3: Were only three hundred. But I was able to plug
[28:56] Speaker 3: it back in and I could check like my speed
[28:58] Speaker 3: and I got like nine hundred. But then I try
[29:00] Speaker 3: to open like other websites and nothing happened on the tabs.
[29:04] Speaker 3: So everything seems to be working perfectly on my Wi Fi,
[29:08] Speaker 3: but not with my Obviously I could a couple of
[29:11] Speaker 3: shoot eat in that cable, but.
[29:13] Speaker 1: Well, it sounds like okay, so when you had it
[29:15] Speaker 1: plugged in, you were able to do a speed test.
[29:18] Speaker 1: How did you do that?
[29:21] Speaker 13: I don't know.
[29:21] Speaker 3: I was able to to go to uh, like the
[29:25] Speaker 3: top speed test, and that worked. I got nine hundred speed.
[29:28] Speaker 3: I said, ooh, maybe that works. And I tried opening
[29:30] Speaker 3: up another tab to like go to Costco and I'll
[29:33] Speaker 3: like just sit there and like go hung up and
[29:35] Speaker 3: like would and go. But what the other thing I
[29:38] Speaker 3: noticed is once I unplugged the Easternite cable and I'm
[29:41] Speaker 3: working off a Wi Fi, it seems like everything opens faster.
[29:45] Speaker 3: It's like, wow, i'ven't done that in years. Wow, I've
[29:48] Speaker 3: been doing this wired. But when I when I do
[29:52] Speaker 3: the Wi Fi, everything works, and I try to write
[29:54] Speaker 3: click on a PVF and open up Windows Defender, it's
[29:58] Speaker 3: still white.
[29:59] Speaker 1: Well that's my no. I think it's related. I think
[30:02] Speaker 1: that's because when you're opening up Windows Defender, it is
[30:06] Speaker 1: it's bringing up a web page and it's trying to
[30:08] Speaker 1: load that, probably through the same method that it uses
[30:11] Speaker 1: to load everything else. So, okay, a couple things. So
[30:14] Speaker 1: first off, what I would do is troubleshoot your internet connection,
[30:18] Speaker 1: your wired internet connection. So I would reset if you
[30:21] Speaker 1: change you said, you change your DNS or kind of
[30:23] Speaker 1: tweaked your DNS, I would reset your DNS settings if
[30:27] Speaker 1: you know how to do that inside the settings in
[30:30] Speaker 1: control panel or settings on your Mac. So I would
[30:32] Speaker 1: get rid of that, because whenever I have any issue
[30:34] Speaker 1: with my connection, it seems to be related to the
[30:36] Speaker 1: fact that a lot of times I'll switch to using
[30:39] Speaker 1: Google's DNS or you know, the public DNS or whatever
[30:43] Speaker 1: to make things faster or pages load, you know, resolve quicker.
[30:47] Speaker 1: So first off, I would do that, reset your Internet
[30:49] Speaker 1: settings back to the factory. That's number one. Now when
[30:54] Speaker 1: it comes to Chrome, it sounds like there's something wonky
[30:56] Speaker 1: going on with Chrome as well, so I would do
[30:59] Speaker 1: a re set of all of this settings on Chrome.
[31:03] Speaker 1: So it sounds like you know how to tinker on
[31:04] Speaker 1: these things a little bit. So maybe you've changed some
[31:06] Speaker 1: things that don't exactly agree with your Internet anymore, or
[31:10] Speaker 1: there could be just something that's keeping these pages from loading,
[31:14] Speaker 1: just a setting that's gone bad that you may be
[31:16] Speaker 1: changed in the past that just no longer working. So
[31:19] Speaker 1: the fact that Firefox is working okay tells me that
[31:23] Speaker 1: this might be related to mostly Chrome and something inside Chrome,
[31:27] Speaker 1: but it should be working. So what I would do
[31:29] Speaker 1: is go to Settings on Chrome and then you so
[31:32] Speaker 1: it's those three little lines in the upper right hand corner,
[31:34] Speaker 1: and then you tap settings again, and then you'll see
[31:37] Speaker 1: on the left hand side under Settings there's a whole
[31:40] Speaker 1: list of things you can do, but one of them
[31:42] Speaker 1: says settings, and then you tap that says restore settings
[31:46] Speaker 1: to their original defaults. So once you tap that, it
[31:50] Speaker 1: says this will reset your startup page, your new tab page,
[31:53] Speaker 1: your search engine, and your pinned tabs. It will also
[31:56] Speaker 1: disable all extensions and clear temporary data like cookie, so
[32:01] Speaker 1: your bookmark's history and save passwords will not be cleared.
[32:04] Speaker 1: Once you do that, that will reset everything back to
[32:07] Speaker 1: factory on the Chrome browser and things should work after that.
[32:12] Speaker 1: So let me know if that helps or if that works,
[32:15] Speaker 1: just email me on the website, Rich on tech dot
[32:17] Speaker 1: tv hit contact. Don't expect you to do it right
[32:19] Speaker 1: now while we're on the phone, but that's the way
[32:22] Speaker 1: that I would do it, and that should probably bring
[32:25] Speaker 1: things back. It sounds like this is either it's either
[32:28] Speaker 1: an internet connection thing, like somehow you've tweaked your internet
[32:31] Speaker 1: connection settings where it's it's just not agreeing with the
[32:34] Speaker 1: Wi Fi or the wired connection versus the Wi Fi
[32:38] Speaker 1: or it's actually a chrome thing now by the way,
[32:41] Speaker 1: when it comes to the speed, you said you got
[32:43] Speaker 1: three hundred when you were doing Wi Fi versus nine
[32:46] Speaker 1: hundred or six hundred whatever it was when you were
[32:49] Speaker 1: doing the connect the hardline connection. That's pretty typical. So
[32:54] Speaker 1: you know, these internet companies when they advertise the speeds,
[32:58] Speaker 1: they're advertising the speed you would get if you would
[33:00] Speaker 1: plug your computer into your router, and that's going to
[33:03] Speaker 1: be the fastest speed. As soon as you go Wi Fi,
[33:06] Speaker 1: you know you're looking at a drop of upwards of
[33:08] Speaker 1: fifty percent of your speed. Now, most of us have
[33:11] Speaker 1: pretty good speed these days, so it's not that big
[33:13] Speaker 1: of a deal. And of course we're not uploading and
[33:15] Speaker 1: downloading or mostly uploading huge files. So I am which
[33:20] Speaker 1: is why I've got, you know, pretty good internet, And
[33:22] Speaker 1: if I ever want to do anything that's really intense
[33:25] Speaker 1: with the Internet, I will actually switch to a wired connection,
[33:28] Speaker 1: which will make things a heck of a lot faster.
[33:31] Speaker 1: So hopefully that clears things up for you there. That
[33:34] Speaker 1: is very frustrating to not have the internet that is
[33:38] Speaker 1: really really frustrating. Thanks for the call, Mike. Let's see
[33:42] Speaker 1: if we can get Tony and Sanya sidro before we
[33:46] Speaker 1: got to go to break here. Tony, what's up, Hi,
[33:50] Speaker 1: I'm doing well. What's what can I help you with?
[33:53] Speaker 11: Yeah?
[33:53] Speaker 14: I got a little situation. So I have two ponds
[33:56] Speaker 14: right now that I just got about four days ago.
[33:59] Speaker 14: I ordered them new opig sold nine pro xl Okay.
[34:04] Speaker 14: I order also the iPhone sixteen Pro Max, the one terrified.
[34:08] Speaker 14: So the first problem I have with a pixel before
[34:12] Speaker 14: the update, it was actually a working, excellent, perfect, not
[34:16] Speaker 14: a single problem after the update. You know the under
[34:19] Speaker 14: fifteen right now has the problem with the bus or
[34:20] Speaker 14: not so right now, it's the phone is terrible, constantly
[34:25] Speaker 14: overheating and shutting down. Can't even if I'm making a
[34:29] Speaker 14: call with five minutes. Within five minutes, my phone becomes
[34:32] Speaker 14: overheating super hard. So I contact Google and they said
[34:36] Speaker 14: that basically they follow a bug report, and they said
[34:39] Speaker 14: that they're working on a past because they know that
[34:41] Speaker 14: they you know that I get the update mets up
[34:44] Speaker 14: a lot of phones.
[34:45] Speaker 1: I didn't notice any I didn't notice any issues. I
[34:48] Speaker 1: updated the pixel and I haven't noticed. So you could
[34:51] Speaker 1: have you know a bad pixel? I think that. I mean,
[34:56] Speaker 1: have you tried restarting this thing and making sure all
[34:59] Speaker 1: the updates?
[35:00] Speaker 10: Rese it?
[35:00] Speaker 14: I rese it I raised my account and log in
[35:03] Speaker 14: without an account and use the phone normally, and he
[35:06] Speaker 14: does the same thing.
[35:06] Speaker 1: Okay, Well I would return this then if that's the case.
[35:09] Speaker 1: I mean, did you order this direct from Google?
[35:12] Speaker 11: Uh?
[35:13] Speaker 14: No, I actually ordered directly from a company, which is Verizon,
[35:16] Speaker 14: and I I'm gonna shoop it back. Yeah, They're willing
[35:20] Speaker 14: to shoop another one, but I'm just afraid.
[35:21] Speaker 13: To actually, you know, get in another one to have
[35:23] Speaker 13: the same problem.
[35:24] Speaker 1: I've had no issues with the pixel whatsoever, so I
[35:27] Speaker 1: think that it's it's run cool for me. Uh, there's
[35:30] Speaker 1: no software update issues that I've seen, So I think
[35:32] Speaker 1: maybe you got a lemon and just something went wrong
[35:35] Speaker 1: with that that phone at some point during the manufacturing process.
[35:39] Speaker 1: What's going on with the other phone? The iPhone?
[35:42] Speaker 14: Yeah, the other one is the iPhone Chicken, Promax great phone,
[35:45] Speaker 14: excellent phone. I operated from the eleven Promacs, so the
[35:49] Speaker 14: six six and Promax the one terabyte. So he had
[35:55] Speaker 14: the original updated, never had a problem. I was using
[35:58] Speaker 14: it perfectly until the new patch, the new eighteen point
[36:02] Speaker 14: one came out.
[36:03] Speaker 1: Yuppies, tony tony sounds. It sounds like you gotta stop
[36:08] Speaker 1: updating your phones. That's it. That's what I'm hearing right now.
[36:11] Speaker 1: So uh, typically, you know, I recommend updating the phones,
[36:15] Speaker 1: but maybe just wait a little bit longer. Sometimes the
[36:17] Speaker 1: initial update could have some bugs, so in your case,
[36:21] Speaker 1: I would wait just a little bit longer. But these
[36:22] Speaker 1: are both excellent phones. You should have no problems with them.
[36:25] Speaker 1: This is rich on Tech. Welcome back to rich on Tech.
[36:28] Speaker 1: Rich DeMuro here hanging out with you, talking technology at
[36:32] Speaker 1: Triple eight rich one O one eight eight eight seven
[36:36] Speaker 1: four to two four one zero one, playing some songs
[36:40] Speaker 1: that are crowd pleasures at the karaoke bar. Yeah. Uh,
[36:45] Speaker 1: you know, you know when you think you can sing
[36:46] Speaker 1: a karaoke song and all of a sudden the words
[36:49] Speaker 1: starts showing up. You're like, oh, I only know the
[36:52] Speaker 1: coorus of this song. That happens so many times and
[36:56] Speaker 1: you're just kind of like, there's just no way to
[36:58] Speaker 1: get through that. So eight a rich one on one
[37:01] Speaker 1: eighty eight seven four to two, four to one zero one.
[37:04] Speaker 1: The website for the show is rich on tech dot TV.
[37:08] Speaker 1: You can email me there. You can click the light
[37:11] Speaker 1: bulb icon if you want show notes, or you can
[37:14] Speaker 1: sign up for my newsletter. Got a great newsletter today.
[37:18] Speaker 1: We had a question about taking notes at a meeting
[37:23] Speaker 1: and then having AI summarize them and what's the best
[37:26] Speaker 1: way to do that, And so I got a whole
[37:28] Speaker 1: deep dive on that because I'm an expert. Took a
[37:31] Speaker 1: school tour yesterday for my kid, you know, going to
[37:35] Speaker 1: high school, and you know, recorded the meeting like the tour,
[37:39] Speaker 1: and then you just go into AI and you give
[37:41] Speaker 1: me a summary, and it was like amazing that the
[37:43] Speaker 1: It's just unbelievably good what you can do with these
[37:47] Speaker 1: AI summaries now, so just record everything at this point,
[37:51] Speaker 1: something going to high school. Yeah, you're old, I know.
[37:54] Speaker 1: Can you believe that mine is twenty? How you think
[37:56] Speaker 1: I feel? I'm telling you? And it goes fast? I
[37:59] Speaker 1: still remember having on Now all of a sudden, he's
[38:01] Speaker 1: going to high school. What the heck? How does that
[38:03] Speaker 1: happen so fast? Ready for the girls, Let's go to Bob.
[38:08] Speaker 1: Let's go to Bob and ocean side Bob. You're on
[38:11] Speaker 1: with Rich Good?
[38:13] Speaker 3: How you doing time?
[38:14] Speaker 13: Time? Caller a longtime listener.
[38:16] Speaker 1: Well, that's great to hear. What can I help you with?
[38:19] Speaker 13: I got a laptop purchased twenty twenty two, about two
[38:23] Speaker 13: years old, had no problem with it and LG. Graham
[38:26] Speaker 13: fourteen inch.
[38:27] Speaker 1: That's nice, nice light two weeks ago.
[38:30] Speaker 13: Can I name anti virus companies? I might love to
[38:33] Speaker 13: say that.
[38:33] Speaker 1: Sure, I mean there's no antivirus police on the as
[38:37] Speaker 1: far as I know.
[38:37] Speaker 13: Just to give you, just to give you the whole thing,
[38:39] Speaker 13: I had to perski, I got the notice, can't have
[38:42] Speaker 13: it no more. They changed the ultra ad downloaded debt
[38:45] Speaker 13: two weeks prior to what this would happen to this
[38:48] Speaker 13: and the automatic update on my laptop it did? I
[38:53] Speaker 13: believe it's twenty four each two is the number.
[38:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the big one.
[38:57] Speaker 3: That was a big after that happened.
[38:59] Speaker 13: Now get the computer would only turn on and off,
[39:02] Speaker 13: on and off, on and off, on and off. So,
[39:06] Speaker 13: I mean I tried everything I could think and I
[39:08] Speaker 13: couldn't get into it. My brother knows a little bit
[39:11] Speaker 13: of stuff he got into. He had me go into
[39:13] Speaker 13: the bios, took out BitLocker, bitlocked or.
[39:17] Speaker 1: Something to that effect. Yep, that well Okay, so when.
[39:23] Speaker 13: It does it on and off, on and off, I
[39:24] Speaker 13: could hit that eleven and get into my computer. I'd
[39:28] Speaker 13: never set a restore date and time, So anybody out there,
[39:33] Speaker 13: do that now before something happens, because then you can
[39:35] Speaker 13: always go back to that. Well, when when I did
[39:39] Speaker 13: that didn't work out bec I couldn't even get in there,
[39:41] Speaker 13: get encrypted by hard drive.
[39:42] Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, one more couple more things.
[39:46] Speaker 13: So I went on the Microsoft, got my digital recovery key,
[39:49] Speaker 13: put that forty eight digit put that in probably six times.
[39:52] Speaker 13: Never worked its start all over. I get the blue
[39:56] Speaker 13: screen saying hold on a minute, where we set your
[40:00] Speaker 13: your thing and going on on off again. You ever
[40:05] Speaker 13: heard of that or your into this?
[40:07] Speaker 1: Well, it sounds like there's something that went bad during
[40:10] Speaker 1: this update. So was this an automatic update? It did
[40:14] Speaker 1: it overnight?
[40:16] Speaker 13: Yeah, so that's I've turned it off one morning and
[40:18] Speaker 13: a set update available updates shut off, So the next
[40:22] Speaker 13: morning I came out and was doing this.
[40:24] Speaker 1: Yeah. So there are a couple of things, a couple
[40:26] Speaker 1: a couple of lessons learned here. So first off, I've
[40:30] Speaker 1: done this before where I've sort of started an update,
[40:32] Speaker 1: and number one, I don't do automatic updates because I
[40:35] Speaker 1: don't want this thing doing an update when I'm not
[40:37] Speaker 1: watching it, because there's sometimes a screen sometimes something that
[40:40] Speaker 1: you just you just want to watch these things, So
[40:42] Speaker 1: babysit your updates. Don't let your all your devices, whether
[40:45] Speaker 1: it's an Apple device, just don't do the updates automatically.
[40:48] Speaker 1: I think that it's nice to have that ability and
[40:50] Speaker 1: it keeps you secure. But just check for updates manually
[40:54] Speaker 1: and just you know, or have it alert you when
[40:56] Speaker 1: there's an update. But watch these things when they're updating.
[40:58] Speaker 1: That's number one, because sometimes there just may be a screen.
[41:01] Speaker 1: There might have been a screen on this computer that
[41:03] Speaker 1: would have alerted you to something going wrong and you
[41:05] Speaker 1: could have stopped it or whatever. But it's just better
[41:07] Speaker 1: to babysit these things. Number two, This is a big update,
[41:12] Speaker 1: and yes Windows is encrypting the hard drives by default now.
[41:16] Speaker 1: And what that means is that if someone got physical
[41:18] Speaker 1: access to your computer, they would not be able to
[41:21] Speaker 1: see what's on your hard drive. So it used to
[41:23] Speaker 1: be if you just grabbed a hard drive out of
[41:24] Speaker 1: a computer, you know you'd be able to see all
[41:26] Speaker 1: the files and things on there. Now that these phones
[41:29] Speaker 1: and hard drives. Everything's encrypted nowadays. It's good because it's
[41:33] Speaker 1: more secure, but there's also some implications that the main
[41:36] Speaker 1: one being if you lose your key to these devices.
[41:39] Speaker 1: People always say, hey, rich, I lost my you know,
[41:42] Speaker 1: my code to unlock my iPhone? You how do you
[41:45] Speaker 1: get into it? You can't. If you lose that, that's it.
[41:47] Speaker 1: That's what's encrypting your phone. Like, you're not getting into
[41:50] Speaker 1: your phone. Another way, if you forget that, there are
[41:53] Speaker 1: some tools out there that may be able to crack
[41:55] Speaker 1: that code, but it's very, very tricky, very expensive, and
[41:59] Speaker 1: usually reserve for law enforcement. So, Bob, I think you
[42:03] Speaker 1: were smart to find your recovery key. So BitLocker. If
[42:08] Speaker 1: you link these things, these computers to a Microsoft account,
[42:12] Speaker 1: which ninety nine percent of the time they make you
[42:14] Speaker 1: do that. Anyway, at this point you can find your
[42:16] Speaker 1: recovery key. Because most people don't write these down. They
[42:19] Speaker 1: forget and you can go to the website. Let's see
[42:23] Speaker 1: if I can find it here. Let's see Microsoft recovery key.
[42:28] Speaker 1: Of course I can't find it at this point, but
[42:30] Speaker 1: let's see here. It is okay aka dot MS that's
[42:35] Speaker 1: like Microsoft shortener for their websites aka dot ms slash
[42:39] Speaker 1: my recovery key. So if you're getting that screen where
[42:42] Speaker 1: it's saying, hey, you got to put in your BitLocker
[42:44] Speaker 1: recovery key, that's where you find it. And so I
[42:46] Speaker 1: went into my screen and I'm looking, and I find
[42:49] Speaker 1: these keys from all the way back in twenty fifteen
[42:52] Speaker 1: on twenty thirteen. Wow, I've got twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen,
[42:56] Speaker 1: twenty fifteen, and twenty twenty four So these are all
[42:58] Speaker 1: my surface devices and stop computers I've had over the years.
[43:02] Speaker 1: So there's my recovery key. That's how you can find it.
[43:04] Speaker 1: That's what you pop in to hopefully unlock. In this case, Bob,
[43:07] Speaker 1: it sounds like something got corrupted on your machine, so
[43:12] Speaker 1: the best I could say, and it sounded like you
[43:14] Speaker 1: already started up in safe mode. So I would try
[43:16] Speaker 1: to start this up in safe mode and see if
[43:19] Speaker 1: that brings up the system, the operating system, and then
[43:22] Speaker 1: maybe you can go in there and kind of get
[43:24] Speaker 1: rid of some apps and things that might be messing
[43:26] Speaker 1: with this startup. But that's probably the best case scenario.
[43:30] Speaker 1: Otherwise I would probably just format this computer hopefully. And
[43:34] Speaker 1: that brings me to lesson number three. Backup, back up, backup,
[43:38] Speaker 1: and you mentioned it to yourself, the restore point. So
[43:41] Speaker 1: that's a very important thing to do, is have a
[43:43] Speaker 1: restore point on Windows and also a backup of Windows.
[43:47] Speaker 1: You can just plug in a hard drive to a
[43:49] Speaker 1: Windows computer and open up Windows Backup, which is built
[43:52] Speaker 1: into the machine, and have your information backed up to
[43:56] Speaker 1: that hard drive, your critical files and things like that.
[43:59] Speaker 1: I would put a lot of stuff in one drive.
[44:01] Speaker 1: Maybe if you're not paying for that. You know, there's
[44:02] Speaker 1: obviously a limit to how much you can put in there.
[44:05] Speaker 1: But for me, I was just talking about this with
[44:08] Speaker 1: my kid. You know, you wanted to set up a
[44:10] Speaker 1: new computer, and he said, and I said, well, do
[44:11] Speaker 1: you want to restore your files or things like that?
[44:13] Speaker 1: He said no, no, no, I want a fresh start. And
[44:15] Speaker 1: I said that's what I always do. I just have
[44:17] Speaker 1: everything in the cloud and then nothing on my physical computer,
[44:21] Speaker 1: so that when I get a new computer, I don't
[44:23] Speaker 1: want all the fragments and bits and pieces and applications
[44:26] Speaker 1: that I downloaded and deleted coming over to the new computer.
[44:30] Speaker 1: So I want to start fresh. So I just set
[44:32] Speaker 1: it up, started up fresh, and then download whatever I
[44:35] Speaker 1: need from the internet and that's going to be the
[44:38] Speaker 1: way I set these things up. I get it. It takes
[44:40] Speaker 1: a little bit longer, it's a little bit more hands on,
[44:42] Speaker 1: but I think that's going to be better in the
[44:43] Speaker 1: end because you're gonna have less issues with your computer. So, Bob,
[44:47] Speaker 1: I think you mentioned you tried the safe mode thing,
[44:49] Speaker 1: but if you didn't, I would try to buy a
[44:52] Speaker 1: boot up in the safe mode and if that doesn't work,
[44:56] Speaker 1: I would probably just format the whole computer. Just just
[44:59] Speaker 1: get get a boot drive and do it that way.
[45:03] Speaker 1: Good call. Thanks for the man. A lot of issues
[45:06] Speaker 1: today with hardware. Just nobody's nothing's working out there. Let
[45:10] Speaker 1: me check the moon again. Is that what's happening here?
[45:12] Speaker 9: All right?
[45:13] Speaker 1: I told you I was going to tell you about
[45:14] Speaker 1: these new Mac computers. So they got three new Mac computers.
[45:17] Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you about them very quickly. What you
[45:19] Speaker 1: need to know the first is the iMac. These all
[45:22] Speaker 1: have the M four chips, and Apple bumped the RAM
[45:26] Speaker 1: now to sixteen standard, so it used to be eight gigs,
[45:29] Speaker 1: now it's sixteen. That means everything's going to be speeder
[45:32] Speaker 1: on these computers. That was a great move by Apple.
[45:35] Speaker 1: Had to be done because of AI. So the Imac's
[45:37] Speaker 1: got this twenty four inch screen. It's got this new
[45:40] Speaker 1: nano texture option which reduces glare. I saw it in person,
[45:44] Speaker 1: went to the Apple event here in LA and I
[45:47] Speaker 1: saw these things hands on, and it does make a
[45:49] Speaker 1: huge difference. It's a two hundred dollars upgrade. But if
[45:52] Speaker 1: you work underneath a light, like every day in my office,
[45:54] Speaker 1: I'm always adjusting my screen for to get rid of
[45:57] Speaker 1: the glare. So if you don't want that, go for
[45:59] Speaker 1: that two hundred dollar option. They also have a better
[46:02] Speaker 1: camera webcam. It's got twelve megapixels. It also moves around
[46:06] Speaker 1: to follow you in the view, and it's got desk view,
[46:08] Speaker 1: which means it can sort of you can place a
[46:10] Speaker 1: picture on your or whatever you want to show looking
[46:13] Speaker 1: face down and it can do that. Let's see the colors.
[46:16] Speaker 1: You've got green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver.
[46:20] Speaker 1: Plus the keyboard in the mouse match the color on
[46:23] Speaker 1: the screen. So that's nice. And they all come in USBC. Now,
[46:27] Speaker 1: finally that's going to be thirteen hundred dollars for the Imax.
[46:30] Speaker 1: Then you've got the MacBook Pros. Those have the M
[46:33] Speaker 1: four chips as well. They come in black and silver.
[46:36] Speaker 1: Again the sixteen gigabytes of memory. This also has that
[46:39] Speaker 1: Nanotexture display. Plus it's got Thunderbolt five on some of
[46:43] Speaker 1: these models, which is really good for connectivity, and those
[46:46] Speaker 1: were impressive. I went with the MacBook Air this time around.
[46:49] Speaker 1: MacBook pros are much much more powerful. And then finally
[46:52] Speaker 1: you got the new Mac Mini. This starts at five
[46:55] Speaker 1: hundred ninety nine dollars. Again, sixteen gigabytes of memory. It
[46:59] Speaker 1: is really small in compact, half the previous size. This
[47:03] Speaker 1: thing is incredibly small. You add all your own stuff
[47:06] Speaker 1: of course, your screen, your mouse, and your keyboard, and
[47:10] Speaker 1: this now has front facing ports on the front for
[47:12] Speaker 1: the first time USBC, plus an audio jack high impedance
[47:16] Speaker 1: they said. Plus you got on the back thunderbowlt Ethernet HDMI.
[47:21] Speaker 1: This thing can support all kinds of monitors, and it's
[47:23] Speaker 1: Apple's first carbon neutral Mac that starts at five to
[47:27] Speaker 1: ninety nine. Don't forget about education discounts. All these products
[47:31] Speaker 1: are available November eighth. Coming up, I'll tell you why
[47:34] Speaker 1: open ai is taking on Google head on. This is
[47:38] Speaker 1: rich on Tech. Welcome back to rich on Tech. Rich
[47:42] Speaker 1: DeMuro here hanging out with you talking technology. This week,
[47:48] Speaker 1: Open Ai launch their full frontal assault at Chat Google.
[47:55] Speaker 1: They have launched chat GPT search. This is you know,
[47:59] Speaker 1: I think Google would probably say they're not worried, but
[48:02] Speaker 1: this is worrisome because chat gbt has made such a
[48:05] Speaker 1: name for itself with its Ai search product. Now the
[48:09] Speaker 1: fact that they have a full on web search product,
[48:13] Speaker 1: that's a big deal. So I've been testing this out.
[48:15] Speaker 1: I was on the waitlist. I figured out why I
[48:17] Speaker 1: got access to this, so I don't pay for chat
[48:20] Speaker 1: gbt right now. It's only available to the plus subscribers,
[48:23] Speaker 1: but I did request access on the waitlist, so I
[48:26] Speaker 1: guess anyone who did that got access early, including myself.
[48:30] Speaker 1: So now when you search chat ebt with this added
[48:33] Speaker 1: sort of you know, search functionality, not only do you
[48:37] Speaker 1: see a little globe in your search box which you
[48:40] Speaker 1: can check and that will say, hey, let's push this
[48:43] Speaker 1: search to the web, or when you're doing a search,
[48:46] Speaker 1: it will just say, okay, we'd rather get this information
[48:48] Speaker 1: fresh off the webs and so we'll go to the web.
[48:51] Speaker 1: But no matter what, it's pretty good. And this is
[48:55] Speaker 1: day one, so it's going to get better. But it's
[48:58] Speaker 1: really just a matter of chat GBT used to have
[49:01] Speaker 1: all this information that was just percolating that's been built in.
[49:04] Speaker 1: Now it's actually scanning the web and getting information in
[49:07] Speaker 1: real time to ping. So if you want to ask,
[49:09] Speaker 1: you know, who had the best plays at yesterday's football
[49:12] Speaker 1: game or today's game, it would have those answers because
[49:15] Speaker 1: it's scanning the news sources for those. So it's pretty incredible.
[49:19] Speaker 1: It's not perfect, and you know, this is just a start,
[49:22] Speaker 1: So chat GBT will show you where it's getting the information,
[49:26] Speaker 1: which is good. It's got, let's see, partnerships with major publishers,
[49:30] Speaker 1: so they're getting some of the you know, a lot
[49:32] Speaker 1: of people are saying, ah, we don't want you chat GBT,
[49:34] Speaker 1: We don't want you coming over at our you know,
[49:36] Speaker 1: scanning all of our stuff and using it in your results.
[49:38] Speaker 1: So now they're cutting deals because chatchibt's got a lot
[49:40] Speaker 1: of money, so they're cutting deals with these companies like
[49:43] Speaker 1: news Corp, News Corp, Axel, Springer, Time Magazine, Lamond, many
[49:48] Speaker 1: many others. And so this is pretty good and I
[49:51] Speaker 1: definitely think you should check it out. It's kind of
[49:53] Speaker 1: like the future of search, and it's something I've been
[49:56] Speaker 1: talking about for a long time that when this happens
[49:59] Speaker 1: and Google sort of sees this. Now, if you go
[50:02] Speaker 1: to Google's Gemini, that's kind of very similar to this.
[50:05] Speaker 1: I think Gemini is really good. It's got the power
[50:08] Speaker 1: of Google. But now you know, people are so used
[50:10] Speaker 1: to chat GBT and they love it so much that
[50:12] Speaker 1: they're probably just going to use this. There's also if
[50:15] Speaker 1: you want to get around the sort of paid aspect
[50:19] Speaker 1: of this, you can download a Chrome extension. It is
[50:22] Speaker 1: the Chat GBT Search Chrome Extension, and that will actually
[50:26] Speaker 1: take over your search bar on Chrome and turn it
[50:29] Speaker 1: into chat GBT search. Now. I tried this, and I
[50:32] Speaker 1: will tell you I don't think chat GBT search is
[50:35] Speaker 1: great for all of your searches right now. Sometimes let's
[50:38] Speaker 1: say you just want a phone number for a restaurant
[50:39] Speaker 1: or something, and you go on Google and you search
[50:41] Speaker 1: for it that you know you're gonna get this whole
[50:43] Speaker 1: chat gybt. I call it a book report. It's going
[50:45] Speaker 1: to tell you all about like this restaurant and things
[50:47] Speaker 1: like that. So it's not the best for every search,
[50:50] Speaker 1: but it is really really good, and it is the
[50:51] Speaker 1: start of something very different in how we search the web.
[50:55] Speaker 1: So check it out chat GBT search. If you're a
[50:58] Speaker 1: paid member, you have access to it. Right now, let's
[51:02] Speaker 1: go to David in Los Angeles. David, what's up?
[51:06] Speaker 15: Yes, Hi out calling. I wanted to find out what's
[51:10] Speaker 15: the best way to remove your personal information from data
[51:14] Speaker 15: brokers site and the Google of my computer in California.
[51:20] Speaker 15: Do you suggest any methods that we can use that
[51:24] Speaker 15: are secure to to remove our personal data from the
[51:30] Speaker 15: Google web pages?
[51:32] Speaker 1: So I'm in the Internet, so yeah, so a couple things.
[51:36] Speaker 1: So number one, this is a game of whack the mole.
[51:38] Speaker 1: So you can try to do this, but it's just
[51:40] Speaker 1: it's it's a never ending process and it's something that
[51:45] Speaker 1: I'm not even sure it's worth it, to be honest,
[51:47] Speaker 1: for a regular person, that's just kind of you know,
[51:50] Speaker 1: day to day whatever. If you just have your address
[51:52] Speaker 1: out there, your phone number, it's always going to be
[51:54] Speaker 1: out there. And so that's the number one thing is
[51:56] Speaker 1: that you're probably going to pay a lot of money
[51:58] Speaker 1: to have one of these service is delete your information,
[52:01] Speaker 1: and yeah, you know you're gonna get results. So, for instance,
[52:05] Speaker 1: I've been testing Mozilla monitor right. They gave me a
[52:08] Speaker 1: test account and they've manually fixed eleven instances of my data.
[52:13] Speaker 1: They've removed three hundred and forty three instances of my
[52:16] Speaker 1: data and there's three hundred and sixty three still in progress.
[52:20] Speaker 1: So what does that tell me? Every single time they
[52:22] Speaker 1: remove my data from a website, it just pops up
[52:24] Speaker 1: on another website. So you can do this and you
[52:27] Speaker 1: can sign up for one. There's a lot of them.
[52:29] Speaker 1: Delete me in Cogni, Mozilla monitor. If you look at
[52:34] Speaker 1: consumer reports. They said that most of these sites don't
[52:38] Speaker 1: really work, but the two that they liked the best
[52:39] Speaker 1: was called easy opt out and Optory, and so you
[52:44] Speaker 1: can try those two if you want to start, but
[52:45] Speaker 1: you're gonna pay for this stuff. The thing that I
[52:48] Speaker 1: really like is called Google Results About You. And this
[52:52] Speaker 1: brings me to a second aspect of this is that
[52:55] Speaker 1: the information on the data brokers is one thing that's
[52:59] Speaker 1: you know, you can remove that and it's just basically
[53:01] Speaker 1: your name and your address. But the information that you
[53:04] Speaker 1: can't really remove is the dark web information. This is
[53:08] Speaker 1: from all of the data breaches we've seen over the
[53:10] Speaker 1: past couple of years, and that is impossible to remove.
[53:13] Speaker 1: And that's the really bad stuff like your social Security number,
[53:16] Speaker 1: like your data birth like all these other things, your passwords,
[53:21] Speaker 1: your user names, that is all out there. And if
[53:24] Speaker 1: you want to see what that stuff is lurking on
[53:26] Speaker 1: the web, just go to the website pentester dot com,
[53:29] Speaker 1: pentester dot com, type in your email address and I'm
[53:34] Speaker 1: telling you you'll see all the stuff that's out there.
[53:37] Speaker 1: It's a ton of it. It's all kinds of information.
[53:40] Speaker 1: So again I would start with Google results about you.
[53:43] Speaker 1: That is free, that will take these results off of
[53:46] Speaker 1: Google as they pop up there. But if you want
[53:49] Speaker 1: to try one of those data broker services, just understand
[53:52] Speaker 1: that it can only remove the stuff that is on
[53:54] Speaker 1: the public data broker websites, not the stuff on the
[53:57] Speaker 1: dark web. Coming up, we're going to talk about Apple's
[53:59] Speaker 1: new hearing aid feature on the air Pods Pro. This
[54:03] Speaker 1: is rich on Tech. Welcome back to rich on Tech.
[54:06] Speaker 1: Rich DeMuro here hanging out with you talking technology this week.
[54:12] Speaker 1: You have a new feature available to you if you
[54:14] Speaker 1: have a pair of AirPods Pro too. These are Apples,
[54:19] Speaker 1: you know the air pods you see everywhere. These are
[54:21] Speaker 1: the high end ones with the noise cancelation feature. They
[54:25] Speaker 1: have a new hearing aid functionality and also hearing protection
[54:28] Speaker 1: built into them. So if you update your phone and
[54:31] Speaker 1: you get the update for these AirPods, you now have
[54:34] Speaker 1: hearing aid functionality built into them and you can take
[54:37] Speaker 1: a hearing test right from your phone. So to talk
[54:40] Speaker 1: all about this, I spoke with Dedra Callbeck of Apple
[54:44] Speaker 1: to explain the new hearing aid features on the air
[54:47] Speaker 1: Pods pro.
[54:49] Speaker 16: Hearing is so important to how we connect with each
[54:52] Speaker 16: other and the world around us, and you know, there
[54:55] Speaker 16: are so many people, over a billion people in the
[54:57] Speaker 16: world who are living with mild to moderate hearing loss,
[55:00] Speaker 16: and so we thought there was something we could do
[55:03] Speaker 16: to really help improve their overall well being and quality
[55:07] Speaker 16: of life. So yeah, so we wanted to build something
[55:10] Speaker 16: just really intuitive, so intuitive that maybe it almost feels
[55:14] Speaker 16: like an extension of your own senses. And we thought
[55:17] Speaker 16: we could potentially change people's lives and democratize access to
[55:22] Speaker 16: something that really affects millions of people. So we, yeah,
[55:26] Speaker 16: we're introducing an end to end hearing health experience with
[55:29] Speaker 16: AirPods Pro Too.
[55:32] Speaker 1: How do I get started? How do I get this feature?
[55:35] Speaker 16: So all you need to do if you already have
[55:38] Speaker 16: AirPods Pro Too, It's available in the Health app with
[55:42] Speaker 16: the latest software update, and what you'll see when you
[55:46] Speaker 16: do that, you'll have access to not only hearing protection
[55:49] Speaker 16: which will reduce loud sounds in the environment around you,
[55:52] Speaker 16: but you'll see that you're now going to be able
[55:54] Speaker 16: to take a hearing test. And so to just tell
[55:57] Speaker 16: you a little bit about how that works with your
[55:59] Speaker 16: airs pro, you take that test in any quiet environment
[56:03] Speaker 16: you feel comfortable with really intuitive five minute test you
[56:07] Speaker 16: can do either on your iPhone or your iPad in
[56:10] Speaker 16: the health app. You'll just tap the screen when you
[56:13] Speaker 16: hear a series of tones at different volumes and frequencies,
[56:16] Speaker 16: and it includes animations and tap effects and progress indicators
[56:20] Speaker 16: to sort of guide you through the process. And then
[56:22] Speaker 16: when you're done with the hearing test, you'll get the
[56:25] Speaker 16: results in this really easy to understand personalized hearing profile,
[56:30] Speaker 16: which is also known as an audiogram. If you receive
[56:33] Speaker 16: an audiogram that shows perceived mild to moderate hearing loss,
[56:39] Speaker 16: then you can use the hearing aid feature and so
[56:41] Speaker 16: it will seamlessly transform those same air pods into clinical
[56:45] Speaker 16: grade hearing aids.
[56:48] Speaker 1: How good is the experience with these AirPods compared to
[56:53] Speaker 1: what you would get at from an audiologist.
[56:56] Speaker 16: Yeah, so we of course, as with any of our
[56:59] Speaker 16: our features, we have validated this against kind of the
[57:03] Speaker 16: gold standard of a pure tone audiometry test. So the
[57:06] Speaker 16: hearing test is very similar to a test that you
[57:09] Speaker 16: would take if you go into a clinical setting or
[57:14] Speaker 16: talk to an audiologist. The hearing aid feature is designed
[57:18] Speaker 16: for those with mild to moderate hearing loss, which is
[57:22] Speaker 16: actually the vast majority of people who are experiencing hearing loss.
[57:25] Speaker 16: It's really those billion people around the world, and the
[57:29] Speaker 16: hearing aid is validated for anyone who's experiencing mild to
[57:34] Speaker 16: moderate hearing loss.
[57:35] Speaker 1: How do you expect people to use these as a
[57:37] Speaker 1: hearing aid? Is it something you'd wear all day? Is
[57:39] Speaker 1: it something you'd wear to a restaurant? How do you
[57:42] Speaker 1: expect people to useless?
[57:44] Speaker 16: Exactly as you said, we do expect people to find
[57:47] Speaker 16: a lot of benefit from wearing their air pods throughout
[57:51] Speaker 16: the day in any listening environment. It could be at
[57:55] Speaker 16: that noisy restaurant where you're having trouble hearing the people
[57:58] Speaker 16: at the table with you, and so you'll actually not
[58:01] Speaker 16: only assist you with hearing, but it has other features
[58:04] Speaker 16: like conversation Boost, which will actually boost the conversation that's
[58:09] Speaker 16: happening around you, so you can hear that better. You
[58:11] Speaker 16: can use this even if you're just listening to music
[58:16] Speaker 16: or podcasts or the radio on any of your devices,
[58:19] Speaker 16: but you can also use them at a concert maybe,
[58:23] Speaker 16: so you can actually still get that great sound quality,
[58:25] Speaker 16: but your hearing is protected and assisted if you have
[58:28] Speaker 16: hearing loss. So really any any listening environment these will
[58:32] Speaker 16: be great for.
[58:34] Speaker 1: Is this a functionality of these specific hearing aids these
[58:38] Speaker 1: specific air pods? Is this feature plan for other ones?
[58:41] Speaker 1: And if it works for the existing ones I have,
[58:43] Speaker 1: do I have to do anything to update them?
[58:47] Speaker 16: So this works with AirPods Pro two, which is the
[58:51] Speaker 16: version of AirPods Pro that has been out for.
[58:53] Speaker 5: About two years now.
[58:54] Speaker 16: So if you already have AirPods Pro two, you simply
[58:58] Speaker 16: update the software that is available on your iPhone or
[59:01] Speaker 16: iPad today and.
[59:03] Speaker 5: You will be able to use all three of these features.
[59:07] Speaker 16: If you go into the health app on your iPhone
[59:09] Speaker 16: or iPad, you'll be able to take the hearing test
[59:12] Speaker 16: and then based on those results, you can use the
[59:14] Speaker 16: hearing aid feature with the existing AirPods Pro to that
[59:18] Speaker 16: you have.
[59:18] Speaker 1: Do I have to wear both of them at the
[59:20] Speaker 1: same time to get the benefits.
[59:23] Speaker 5: You can wear both or you can just wear one.
[59:25] Speaker 1: And why is Apple doing this? Why do this?
[59:28] Speaker 16: You know, we just we always want to think about
[59:31] Speaker 16: ways that we can help people improve their lives, impact
[59:35] Speaker 16: their life in a really positive way with the devices
[59:38] Speaker 16: that they're using every day. So with AirPods and iPhone,
[59:43] Speaker 16: you're probably making phone calls, you're probably listening to music
[59:46] Speaker 16: or podcasts, and we really just thought, gosh, if we could,
[59:50] Speaker 16: if we could help not only protect your hearing, maybe
[59:53] Speaker 16: in the younger demographics, if you're not yet experiencing hearing loss,
[59:57] Speaker 16: but you're you know, at a loud concert or you're
[1:00:01] Speaker 16: on a noisy subway on your daily commute, you can
[1:00:03] Speaker 16: use hearing protection to reduce those loud sounds and protect
[1:00:07] Speaker 16: your hearing over time. We want to just be able
[1:00:09] Speaker 16: to sort of meet people where they're at and just
[1:00:11] Speaker 16: allow them to be impacted in a positive way just
[1:00:15] Speaker 16: by simply using the devices they have with them every day.
[1:00:18] Speaker 16: I think that a lot of this is, you know,
[1:00:21] Speaker 16: really just about awareness. You can, of course, choose how
[1:00:24] Speaker 16: you want to address any results you might get, and
[1:00:28] Speaker 16: I do think that the ability to use air pods
[1:00:31] Speaker 16: your everyday headphones to assist with a hearing issue that
[1:00:35] Speaker 16: you may have. Is going to sort of help reduce
[1:00:38] Speaker 16: the stigma of hearing assistance just being able to use
[1:00:43] Speaker 16: air pods. You know, you could be listening to music,
[1:00:45] Speaker 16: you could be having your hearing assisted. But I do
[1:00:48] Speaker 16: think it's good to just have that awareness. And of
[1:00:51] Speaker 16: course it's up to you how you want to address it.
[1:00:53] Speaker 1: Okay, and where do I find that hearing a test feature? Again?
[1:00:56] Speaker 1: Is it in the Health app?
[1:00:58] Speaker 10: Yeah?
[1:00:58] Speaker 16: So it's in the Health app on your iPhone or
[1:01:00] Speaker 16: iPad with the latest software update. And to learn more,
[1:01:03] Speaker 16: you can go to Apple dot com forward slash Airpodspro.
[1:01:07] Speaker 1: There you have it. DJ calledback from Apple explaining the
[1:01:12] Speaker 1: new hearing aid feature on the AirPods Pro too. Now
[1:01:15] Speaker 1: keep in mind you do have to have the AirPods
[1:01:18] Speaker 1: Pro two to get this, and so you're gonna have
[1:01:22] Speaker 1: to check the model number. If you don't know which
[1:01:25] Speaker 1: one you have. There is a way to if you
[1:01:27] Speaker 1: look on Apple Support, it'll tell you there's a link
[1:01:30] Speaker 1: that says identify your air pods. So just search for
[1:01:33] Speaker 1: that on Google. Just type in Apple Support identify your AirPods.
[1:01:37] Speaker 1: If you have the AirPods Pro too. There is a
[1:01:40] Speaker 1: software update available. You have to be updated to the
[1:01:42] Speaker 1: latest operating system and of course the latest software on
[1:01:44] Speaker 1: the AirPods, which is automatic. But once you do that,
[1:01:47] Speaker 1: you can open up the health app and you can
[1:01:50] Speaker 1: scroll all the way down on the home screen and
[1:01:52] Speaker 1: it says test you're hearing with AirPods Pro. Take a
[1:01:55] Speaker 1: hearing test and it takes I did it yesterday. It
[1:01:58] Speaker 1: takes about five minutes, and I'll be quite honest, I
[1:02:00] Speaker 1: was a little concerned about taking this test because you know,
[1:02:03] Speaker 1: I've been working in TV and now radio for a
[1:02:06] Speaker 1: long time and I've always had something on my ears
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: or in my ears right. So in TV we have
[1:02:12] Speaker 1: these things called IFBs, which stick in your ear and
[1:02:15] Speaker 1: allows people from the the control room to talk to
[1:02:19] Speaker 1: you without other people hearing you. And so that is
[1:02:23] Speaker 1: what I've had in my ear forever. And I was
[1:02:24] Speaker 1: really worried because I was like, oh gosh, I'm going
[1:02:26] Speaker 1: to get this test and I'm going to feel like
[1:02:28] Speaker 1: I've got some hearing loss, and so I was very
[1:02:30] Speaker 1: hesitant to take it. But after talking to Deidre, I
[1:02:33] Speaker 1: did take it, and I'm happy to say it said
[1:02:37] Speaker 1: I'm fine, gave me my little decibels in each ear.
[1:02:40] Speaker 1: That's a little bit lost, but it's nothing, nothing to
[1:02:42] Speaker 1: worry about right now, So take the test. And again
[1:02:46] Speaker 1: this is this is just standard AirPods pro too, so
[1:02:49] Speaker 1: if you've got those, you might as well try this out.
[1:02:52] Speaker 1: And honestly, if you feel like you've got hearing loss
[1:02:56] Speaker 1: and you don't want to deal with the hearing aid situation,
[1:02:58] Speaker 1: you just want something that helps you conversations better or
[1:03:01] Speaker 1: hear better, this is a great thing to do in general,
[1:03:04] Speaker 1: And don't be scared. I was scared. I got the
[1:03:05] Speaker 1: test results and you know, it's fine, and I think
[1:03:09] Speaker 1: it's good to know this stuff versus here not knowing it.
[1:03:11] Speaker 1: And again this is for mild to moderate hearing loss.
[1:03:14] Speaker 1: This is not for complete hearing loss. But again this
[1:03:18] Speaker 1: will tweak your AirPods not only for people but also
[1:03:20] Speaker 1: the stuff you listen to on your phone as well,
[1:03:23] Speaker 1: So very easy. You could do it right from your phone,
[1:03:25] Speaker 1: and I just think this is incredible. The other thing
[1:03:28] Speaker 1: is if you don't have hearing loss, there are a
[1:03:31] Speaker 1: lot of hearing assistance features. She mentioned one called hearing protection.
[1:03:36] Speaker 1: So did you know that you could actually like wear
[1:03:38] Speaker 1: AirPods out and about and if you're on a construction
[1:03:41] Speaker 1: site or at a concert, they actually do protect your hearing.
[1:03:44] Speaker 1: And this was something that was new to me because
[1:03:46] Speaker 1: I had a meeting with Apple a couple of years
[1:03:48] Speaker 1: ago and they mentioned this. I said, wait, what do
[1:03:49] Speaker 1: you mean these they're like earplugs. They're like, yes, So,
[1:03:54] Speaker 1: because they actually seal your ear up, it does physically
[1:03:58] Speaker 1: protect your ear from these loud sounds. And so there's
[1:04:01] Speaker 1: now this new setting where that if your AirPods hear
[1:04:04] Speaker 1: something really loud outside, like a bang or you know,
[1:04:08] Speaker 1: some sort of alarm or siren going past, it will
[1:04:11] Speaker 1: actually get rid of some of that intensity on your ear.
[1:04:15] Speaker 1: So definitely check out these features. Really cool that Apple's
[1:04:18] Speaker 1: doing stuff like this. Eighty eight rich one O one
[1:04:21] Speaker 1: eight eight eight seven four to two four one zero one.
[1:04:23] Speaker 1: Coming up, I'll tell you about the feature Disney Plus
[1:04:26] Speaker 1: stole from Netflix and why it might change how you
[1:04:29] Speaker 1: watch stuff. That's coming up right here. I'm rich on Tech.
[1:04:34] Speaker 1: Welcome back to rich on Tech. Rich Demiro here hanging
[1:04:37] Speaker 1: out with you, talking technology. We're just talking about the AirPods,
[1:04:40] Speaker 1: and Kim and I were talking about how to identify
[1:04:43] Speaker 1: the AirPods. If you pull your AirPod out of the
[1:04:46] Speaker 1: case and you look on the bottom, like on the
[1:04:49] Speaker 1: side of the little AirPod, it's printed in teen tiny letters.
[1:04:54] Speaker 1: I've never even seen this before, never noticed it. But
[1:04:58] Speaker 1: there's no way the human eye can read this unless
[1:05:00] Speaker 1: you are Superman. But if you take a photo with
[1:05:03] Speaker 1: your phone and zoom in, especially if you have a
[1:05:06] Speaker 1: macro lens on your phone, that'll help you identify. So
[1:05:09] Speaker 1: I was looking, mind says Apple. Let's see what it says,
[1:05:13] Speaker 1: three four oh seven, and then it's got the serial
[1:05:16] Speaker 1: number as well. So then you go to that website
[1:05:18] Speaker 1: I mentioned, the Identify your AirPods and you just search
[1:05:22] Speaker 1: for your model number. There's only a handful. There's maybe
[1:05:24] Speaker 1: like fifteen twenty model numbers, and then that will tell
[1:05:27] Speaker 1: you which AirPods you have. So there are different versions
[1:05:30] Speaker 1: of the AirPods Pro two. There are one, two, three, four,
[1:05:34] Speaker 1: five six versions of those. So chances are you know
[1:05:39] Speaker 1: you could have these AirPods Pro two with that hearing
[1:05:42] Speaker 1: aid feature on it. Let's go to Robert in Redondo Beach,
[1:05:47] Speaker 1: Robert your own with Rich.
[1:05:49] Speaker 10: All Rich, I have a problem with my email at
[1:05:52] Speaker 10: aol okay. I can't get into it. I changed the
[1:05:56] Speaker 10: password probably two weeks ago, and they do a verification
[1:06:01] Speaker 10: code and I found out I've changed my iPhone at
[1:06:05] Speaker 10: the beginning of the year, so that number is not
[1:06:07] Speaker 10: in there. And I tried to do a work around
[1:06:10] Speaker 10: using Google, uh Google as my backup, but it takes
[1:06:15] Speaker 10: me right back the that phone number for the second
[1:06:19] Speaker 10: verification code that's got activated somehow. Now I'm completely blocked
[1:06:24] Speaker 10: out on my AOL email account.
[1:06:27] Speaker 1: Oh, this is this is that's a problem. So you've
[1:06:31] Speaker 1: got uh, let's see, so you're it's basically you can't
[1:06:34] Speaker 1: get this secondary text to that phone number because it's
[1:06:37] Speaker 1: no longer active.
[1:06:39] Speaker 10: Well it's active, but not to me.
[1:06:41] Speaker 1: Not to you. Someone else is getting that code, okay,
[1:06:45] Speaker 1: And there's no way. So when you went to this
[1:06:47] Speaker 1: AOL recovery website, there's no other way. It's not letting
[1:06:51] Speaker 1: you do that.
[1:06:53] Speaker 10: It says, what you know to go to there, do
[1:06:55] Speaker 10: the password, Just go all the way to the bottom
[1:06:58] Speaker 10: to go to the AOL count security.
[1:07:01] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:07:01] Speaker 10: And when I put my password in, it won't accept
[1:07:04] Speaker 10: my passwords, so I can't get to the bottom to
[1:07:06] Speaker 10: get this. So it's like, okay, because somehow my password
[1:07:12] Speaker 10: got corrupted or and on top of that, I tried
[1:07:16] Speaker 10: to use one other just ask, and I found out
[1:07:19] Speaker 10: that was a scam my bank. When I used the
[1:07:22] Speaker 10: credit card to pay for it was supposed to be
[1:07:24] Speaker 10: a dollar, it charged me fifty five because my bank
[1:07:27] Speaker 10: blocked it and it came up on my phone. So
[1:07:29] Speaker 10: I called the bank and they said.
[1:07:31] Speaker 3: It's a scam.
[1:07:32] Speaker 10: So they suggested that I cancel the cards, which I did.
[1:07:37] Speaker 10: So I'm out the cards for this moment, right so
[1:07:40] Speaker 10: I'm waiting on it.
[1:07:43] Speaker 1: O man.
[1:07:43] Speaker 10: And I tried using their all help phone rings. Those
[1:07:48] Speaker 10: are the menu. It either rings nobody answers, well, just
[1:07:54] Speaker 10: tells you call back later, or you know people who
[1:07:57] Speaker 10: are busy.
[1:07:59] Speaker 13: I've been trying that four days.
[1:08:00] Speaker 1: Oh man, are you paying for AOL? No, okay, you're
[1:08:05] Speaker 1: not paying for AOL. Do you need this account?
[1:08:10] Speaker 10: Well, I've had it for years, that's the problem. So
[1:08:13] Speaker 10: my other thought was one guy told me just move
[1:08:17] Speaker 10: it to a Google account. And I don't know if
[1:08:19] Speaker 10: I can move all the AOL stuff with it being
[1:08:22] Speaker 10: locked up like it is, so a Google email address
[1:08:25] Speaker 10: or not. I thought about was doing my own domain.
[1:08:31] Speaker 10: Can I just and then would the domain pick up
[1:08:34] Speaker 10: AOL Holy.
[1:08:36] Speaker 1: No you know no, so if you're not, If you're so,
[1:08:40] Speaker 1: this is an AOL email address, so it's something like
[1:08:43] Speaker 1: you know, robber at AOL dot com or something like that, right, Yeah,
[1:08:47] Speaker 1: So the only way that you can get access to
[1:08:49] Speaker 1: this email is by getting access to the account. There's
[1:08:52] Speaker 1: no way to forward this without getting there. So here's
[1:08:57] Speaker 1: the thing. So you've got let's see here, you've tried
[1:09:02] Speaker 1: this recovery website, which is log in dot AOL dot
[1:09:05] Speaker 1: com slash forget. You've definitely gone there and tried that. No, okay,
[1:09:11] Speaker 1: so that's where I would start. So go to log
[1:09:13] Speaker 1: in dot a L dot com slash forgot, and that
[1:09:17] Speaker 1: will that will take you to a screen that that
[1:09:19] Speaker 1: like basically says, Okay, I don't really remember any of
[1:09:22] Speaker 1: this stuff. And so what it's gonna do is it's
[1:09:24] Speaker 1: going to ask you for an email address or a
[1:09:28] Speaker 1: phone number that you might have used on this account,
[1:09:31] Speaker 1: and it's it's going to understand that you're that you're
[1:09:33] Speaker 1: a little bit challenged here with your access, and so
[1:09:36] Speaker 1: it's going to try different ways to authorize you. So
[1:09:41] Speaker 1: that's what I would do first. It's log in dot
[1:09:43] Speaker 1: aol dot com slash forgot, and once you do that,
[1:09:47] Speaker 1: you know, if you can't get in there, you may
[1:09:51] Speaker 1: have to Yeah, you may have to uh to take
[1:09:55] Speaker 1: other effects here. There's let's see here. So the the
[1:09:59] Speaker 1: solution for the screen in looping or reloads, they say
[1:10:03] Speaker 1: to try using a different browser or clear all the
[1:10:06] Speaker 1: cookies on your browser. So I might try that as
[1:10:09] Speaker 1: well before you you know you can't do that. So
[1:10:13] Speaker 1: if you can't do that, I would clear all the
[1:10:15] Speaker 1: browsers and cookies and sign in everything that's associated with AOL.
[1:10:19] Speaker 1: Get rid of that on your browser, because it may
[1:10:21] Speaker 1: be trying to use an old password or something that's
[1:10:24] Speaker 1: saved on your system to log you in, and that's
[1:10:27] Speaker 1: what's messing it up. So maybe if I were you,
[1:10:29] Speaker 1: I would even try doing this from a different browser
[1:10:31] Speaker 1: on your computer. So maybe if you primarily use Chrome,
[1:10:34] Speaker 1: try using Safari or Edge or something else that you
[1:10:37] Speaker 1: don't typically use to log in there. So that might work.
[1:10:41] Speaker 1: There's also paid if you really I would say, you know,
[1:10:44] Speaker 1: maybe if you don't need anything on this account, just
[1:10:46] Speaker 1: be done with it and set up a Gmail and
[1:10:48] Speaker 1: be done. So that's that would be my advice or
[1:10:51] Speaker 1: an Outlook or something else. But there is a paid
[1:10:55] Speaker 1: premium support offering from AOL, which of course they know
[1:10:58] Speaker 1: people have issues like this all the time. They're going
[1:11:01] Speaker 1: to take the opportunity to make some money on it.
[1:11:02] Speaker 1: So there is an eight hundred number that is on
[1:11:05] Speaker 1: the help page and I'll link it up on the
[1:11:07] Speaker 1: eight hundred numbers eight hundred and three five, eight four,
[1:11:10] Speaker 1: eight six zero. That's their paid premium support. So they
[1:11:13] Speaker 1: are going to ask you for, you know, to pay
[1:11:16] Speaker 1: for that support. But if you want to get into
[1:11:18] Speaker 1: this and it's a one time fee, twenty bucks, whatever
[1:11:21] Speaker 1: it is, it may be worth it to recover this account.
[1:11:23] Speaker 1: Once you recover that account, maybe you want to move
[1:11:25] Speaker 1: it over to a Gmail or something like that. You
[1:11:28] Speaker 1: can set up forwarding or just have Gmail check this
[1:11:31] Speaker 1: account in the Gmail settings and then that way you
[1:11:34] Speaker 1: can be done with this AOL. It's not a bad thing.
[1:11:36] Speaker 1: AOL is not you know, it's not a bad thing.
[1:11:38] Speaker 1: It's just not really. It's owned by Yahoo now, so
[1:11:42] Speaker 1: it's you know, it's just not as up to date
[1:11:44] Speaker 1: as some of the other systems out there. But I
[1:11:45] Speaker 1: get it. If you're using it and you like it
[1:11:47] Speaker 1: and it works, people know that email address. I understand,
[1:11:50] Speaker 1: but at the same time, you know you got to
[1:11:52] Speaker 1: remember these passwords, and you got to when it comes
[1:11:55] Speaker 1: to these recovery accounts. Instead of using a phone number,
[1:11:58] Speaker 1: try to start using a two factor authentication app if
[1:12:02] Speaker 1: they offer that, but I would use that instead because
[1:12:06] Speaker 1: the app will work anytime, and it will work from
[1:12:09] Speaker 1: any phone. Whereas your phone number is tied to your
[1:12:12] Speaker 1: phone number, and if you ever lose access to that
[1:12:14] Speaker 1: phone number or you change numbers, what happens. You lose
[1:12:17] Speaker 1: access to all those account recovery codes. And usually there's
[1:12:20] Speaker 1: another way to get access, but as you can tell Robert,
[1:12:23] Speaker 1: it's not always easy or straightforward sometimes. So again, try
[1:12:26] Speaker 1: those solutions. Hopefully you get access to this a wall
[1:12:28] Speaker 1: account so you can be back eighty eight rich one
[1:12:31] Speaker 1: O one eight eight eight seven four to two four
[1:12:34] Speaker 1: one zero one. Coming up, I'll tell you the app
[1:12:37] Speaker 1: that Nintendo launched that lets you listen to music. This
[1:12:40] Speaker 1: is rich on Tech. Welcome back to rich on Tech.
[1:12:42] Speaker 1: Rich DeMuro here hanging out with you talking technology for
[1:12:46] Speaker 1: another hour right here on the airwaves, in your ear
[1:12:52] Speaker 1: on the podcast, or else streaming in the app just
[1:12:58] Speaker 1: about anywhere. Thanks so much for tuning in. Appreciate you listening.
[1:13:02] Speaker 1: The website for the show is rich on tech dot tv.
[1:13:06] Speaker 1: When you're there, be sure to sign up for my
[1:13:08] Speaker 1: free newsletter. Just sent out a new issue today. The
[1:13:13] Speaker 1: talks about the iPhone intelligence, the Apple Intelligence, talks about
[1:13:17] Speaker 1: the new Max talks about disrupt going there talking to
[1:13:22] Speaker 1: all the startups. Let's see what else. Oh, I answer
[1:13:25] Speaker 1: kent from Wilmington's question. He asked about the best software
[1:13:29] Speaker 1: for creating AI meeting note summaries with an iPhone. Took
[1:13:33] Speaker 1: a little deep dive on that. My gadget of the
[1:13:36] Speaker 1: Week this week. This was great. I was at the
[1:13:39] Speaker 1: Apple event and I've always wanted one of these. Didn't
[1:13:42] Speaker 1: even know it existed. But it's a I don't know
[1:13:45] Speaker 1: how you explain it. It's a it's an around the
[1:13:47] Speaker 1: neck iPhone holder. So you put this thing around your
[1:13:50] Speaker 1: neck like a necklace and it holds your iPhone for
[1:13:53] Speaker 1: hands free video. So basically for me, like I'm getting
[1:13:57] Speaker 1: all these gadgets, I want to take video of them
[1:13:58] Speaker 1: really quickly in my hands, but it's tough to record
[1:14:01] Speaker 1: that at the same time. So this other journalist that
[1:14:04] Speaker 1: was using it, he was like, oh, yeah, it's great.
[1:14:05] Speaker 1: He just you know, looks silly, but it works really great.
[1:14:08] Speaker 1: So I ordered it on Amazon instantly thirty bucks. I've
[1:14:11] Speaker 1: not done my first video with it, but I can't wait.
[1:14:14] Speaker 1: I've got the Barbie Phone. I know Bobo's been waiting
[1:14:17] Speaker 1: for me to get that. I've got the new It's
[1:14:19] Speaker 1: like a flip phone, and so I think that'll be
[1:14:21] Speaker 1: the first thing I use to try to show what
[1:14:23] Speaker 1: that looks like with this thing. Speaking of Barbie, is
[1:14:27] Speaker 1: Barbie Disney I don't think so. But Disney Plus has
[1:14:30] Speaker 1: a new Netflix style top ten list feature basically Netflix.
[1:14:36] Speaker 1: I never understood why Netflix didn't do the top ten list.
[1:14:38] Speaker 1: Then they introduced it, and now of course it's one
[1:14:40] Speaker 1: of the most popular features for finding all the nonsense
[1:14:43] Speaker 1: that you can watch on Netflix. Am I bitter? I
[1:14:48] Speaker 1: am because I watched a movie again on Netflix last night.
[1:14:51] Speaker 1: Here's my problem with Netflix and all these movies they have.
[1:14:54] Speaker 1: You never know if they're any good until you watch them,
[1:14:57] Speaker 1: because just because it's on the top ten list does
[1:14:59] Speaker 1: not mean anything. It just means the other people on
[1:15:01] Speaker 1: Netflix are being tricked into watching these lame movies. And
[1:15:06] Speaker 1: so yesterday, of course we sit down, you know, weekend night,
[1:15:10] Speaker 1: and we're like, oh, let's watch a movie on Netflix.
[1:15:12] Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't know, this is this one gonna
[1:15:14] Speaker 1: be any good? And so we watch it and it's horrible.
[1:15:17] Speaker 1: What was a movie? Should I put it on blast?
[1:15:20] Speaker 9: Do it?
[1:15:20] Speaker 1: I dare you. That's the one thing about the Top
[1:15:24] Speaker 1: ten list. You don't know why it's in the time
[1:15:27] Speaker 1: exactly it was actually that meaning people watching it, or
[1:15:30] Speaker 1: if they put it in there for you to watch
[1:15:33] Speaker 1: right exactly, you don't know. They don't give you all
[1:15:35] Speaker 1: the reasons, like how the algorithm. There's always whenever they
[1:15:38] Speaker 1: mentioned how an algorithm's done, it's like top viewing plus
[1:15:41] Speaker 1: other aspects, like the other is like the no, Netflix
[1:15:45] Speaker 1: just puts stuff in there so that people watch it.
[1:15:47] Speaker 1: But it was called I feel bad blasting this, but
[1:15:50] Speaker 1: it's called Woman of the Hour. It was like basically
[1:15:54] Speaker 1: kind of a serial killer movie and it was like
[1:15:57] Speaker 1: a thriller. The name doesn't even really felt like they
[1:16:01] Speaker 1: ran out of out of money to make this movie,
[1:16:04] Speaker 1: because all of a sudden it just abruptly ends and
[1:16:06] Speaker 1: you're just like, wait what And then they just use
[1:16:08] Speaker 1: like text on the screen to tell you the rest
[1:16:10] Speaker 1: of the story. Okay, literally they just ran out of
[1:16:13] Speaker 1: time or money or enter. Yeah, Kim is asking the
[1:16:16] Speaker 1: Anna Kendrick movie. Yes, that was it. Kim says, go
[1:16:19] Speaker 1: to rotten Tomatoes. I can't figure out rotten tomatoes? Am
[1:16:23] Speaker 1: I like? Is this splat tomato? Mean it's good? Why
[1:16:26] Speaker 1: are people throwing tomatoes at a thing? If it's good?
[1:16:29] Speaker 1: What I don't understand rotten tomatoes. I don't have the
[1:16:32] Speaker 1: time to go research a movie then watch the movie
[1:16:34] Speaker 1: exactly whether watch the movie. By that time, I'm falling
[1:16:37] Speaker 1: asleep and it's a Kim from now on, Kim, what's
[1:16:40] Speaker 1: this movie about? I mean, I have a friend that
[1:16:42] Speaker 1: does movie reviews, you know, Brian Bishop, he bald Brian,
[1:16:47] Speaker 1: who will you know? I used to text him and
[1:16:48] Speaker 1: be like, Brian, give me something to watch. But now
[1:16:50] Speaker 1: I feel like that's a drag on him. It's like
[1:16:53] Speaker 1: he's got to tell me personally. He does a whole podcast,
[1:16:55] Speaker 1: so he's like, just listen to the podcast. I mean,
[1:16:57] Speaker 1: it's a whole thing. I'm telling you, there's way too
[1:17:00] Speaker 1: much out there, and what you like in that top
[1:17:03] Speaker 1: ten is not necessarily what I like. And then of
[1:17:06] Speaker 1: course you have the recommendations, but my kids mess up
[1:17:08] Speaker 1: all my recommendations. So my kid using my YouTube account
[1:17:11] Speaker 1: and he all he watches are like these random videos
[1:17:15] Speaker 1: that do not apply to me anyway. Up, it's not
[1:17:19] Speaker 1: even mister, it's actually he's trying to learn how to
[1:17:21] Speaker 1: do unreal engine coding, and so it's like all these long,
[1:17:25] Speaker 1: like three hour tutorials on like how to make graphics. Anyway,
[1:17:29] Speaker 1: I tell you all this because now Disney Plus has
[1:17:31] Speaker 1: the top ten list. So if you log into Disney Plus,
[1:17:34] Speaker 1: you go to your home screen, it will show you
[1:17:37] Speaker 1: what the top ten things are on Hulu Plu or
[1:17:39] Speaker 1: Disney and Hulu. But here, here's what I was talking about.
[1:17:43] Speaker 1: Rankings are determined by total views of episodes and movies,
[1:17:48] Speaker 1: growing popularity of new titles, other unspecified factors. Yeah, those
[1:17:54] Speaker 1: other unspecified factors are, Yeah, we spent a lot of
[1:17:57] Speaker 1: money making this movie, and we're putting it in the
[1:17:59] Speaker 1: top ten list to shove it down your throat so
[1:18:01] Speaker 1: that you actually watch it, because we need to get
[1:18:04] Speaker 1: that return on our investment here. So anyway, I don't
[1:18:08] Speaker 1: know if you like the top ten, let me know.
[1:18:09] Speaker 1: Rich on tech dot TV contact me. But I'm not convinced.
[1:18:14] Speaker 1: I'm not convinced it means anything excepting it's just nonsense.
[1:18:18] Speaker 1: It was easier when they just had movies in the theater.
[1:18:21] Speaker 1: They spent a lot of money advertising it. You'd get
[1:18:23] Speaker 1: out of the movie and you'd be like, oh, that
[1:18:24] Speaker 1: was a bummer, but at least had a good time
[1:18:26] Speaker 1: with your friends and this and that. Steve and Tampa.
[1:18:28] Speaker 17: What's up, hey, Rich, thanks for taking a call.
[1:18:31] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:18:31] Speaker 17: Absolutely, I got a two desktops. One has a twenty
[1:18:36] Speaker 17: seven in it and one has a twenty eight PI
[1:18:38] Speaker 17: in it video card okay, and I'm running a quest
[1:18:42] Speaker 17: through Virtual Desktop, running some games through because of their
[1:18:45] Speaker 17: Steam games are not on the system, and I'm wondering.
[1:18:50] Speaker 17: I tried discord, I even googled it. I couldn't find
[1:18:53] Speaker 17: anything to give me the answer on this. If improving
[1:18:55] Speaker 17: the video card self inside the system, would that improve
[1:18:59] Speaker 17: it graphics for the game or application I'm using in the.
[1:19:02] Speaker 9: Headset in well?
[1:19:05] Speaker 1: What headset in Quest three?
[1:19:08] Speaker 13: Oh?
[1:19:08] Speaker 1: Oh, you're using in Quest three. Yeah, that's a great question.
[1:19:12] Speaker 1: So you're running through.
[1:19:13] Speaker 17: Virtual desktop and that has its own settings there also.
[1:19:17] Speaker 1: That's the part that I think would kind of clog
[1:19:19] Speaker 1: it up. And not make it so great. So wait,
[1:19:21] Speaker 1: you're okay, so when you run these programs, you're connecting
[1:19:26] Speaker 1: the Quest to the computer.
[1:19:29] Speaker 17: No, I don't like wired. That's why I use a
[1:19:30] Speaker 17: program called virtual Desktop.
[1:19:32] Speaker 3: Does it wirelessly.
[1:19:33] Speaker 17: It hits your computer and runs the computer through steams
[1:19:36] Speaker 17: through this virtual desktop. It's sort of like quest Link
[1:19:40] Speaker 17: okay and thensktop.
[1:19:42] Speaker 1: Okay, but you're running the game off your computer, but
[1:19:44] Speaker 1: you're actually able to see it inside the Quest headset.
[1:19:47] Speaker 10: Correct, absolutely, Yeah, okaym hmm.
[1:19:51] Speaker 1: That's a great question. So you want to upgrade the
[1:19:53] Speaker 1: graphics card on the computer and expect it to upgrade
[1:19:56] Speaker 1: inside the Quest?
[1:19:57] Speaker 17: Yes, because there are settings in the program, says, you know,
[1:20:01] Speaker 17: the fault settings for like certain video cards, and there's
[1:20:04] Speaker 17: a lot of graphed line from low to high. And
[1:20:06] Speaker 17: the twenty eighty TI and that's a few years old
[1:20:09] Speaker 17: now it's like middle of the road. Yeah, And I'm
[1:20:13] Speaker 17: wondering if actually, if I increased it maybe to forty
[1:20:15] Speaker 17: seventy or forty eighty something in that ballpark, if it
[1:20:18] Speaker 17: will help the graphics. And then on the applications, I'm
[1:20:21] Speaker 17: a musing.
[1:20:22] Speaker 1: Well, here's my thought. Yeah, I mean, so here's my
[1:20:25] Speaker 1: thought Number one, if your source graphics are better, I
[1:20:29] Speaker 1: would assume the end result graphics would be better, right,
[1:20:33] Speaker 1: because your source is better. But because you've got this
[1:20:36] Speaker 1: going through a couple of different bottlenecks with the you know,
[1:20:39] Speaker 1: the virtual system and also bringing it to the Quest headset,
[1:20:43] Speaker 1: it could be there could be a limit to just
[1:20:46] Speaker 1: how good these graphics can get. And it's also of
[1:20:48] Speaker 1: course limited by the graphics capabilities of the actual headset.
[1:20:53] Speaker 1: So you know, so I think I think your initial
[1:20:57] Speaker 1: thought is interesting and it could improve slightly, but I'm
[1:21:01] Speaker 1: not sure how much better you're gonna get now if
[1:21:03] Speaker 1: you're talking, you're looking for like a you know, the
[1:21:06] Speaker 1: graphics are just not refreshing at the proper rate, or
[1:21:08] Speaker 1: something's just not looking it's laggy. That may very well
[1:21:12] Speaker 1: be helped by the by the better graphics card, because
[1:21:14] Speaker 1: you're serving up a better source graphic before it goes
[1:21:18] Speaker 1: through these other hops, right, right, But I think it's
[1:21:22] Speaker 1: one of these things where you just have to try
[1:21:24] Speaker 1: it and see, uh yeah, see if it works. You know,
[1:21:29] Speaker 1: I think that does it? Look, what's what's the problem
[1:21:32] Speaker 1: with the graphics? Do they just not look as good?
[1:21:33] Speaker 1: In this Quest had sound.
[1:21:34] Speaker 17: Well, I know, it's like you said, like when they
[1:21:36] Speaker 17: if you're looking something in distance, something it's supposed to
[1:21:38] Speaker 17: look like it's a kilometer away. I can walk a
[1:21:41] Speaker 17: couple of feet up closer, and all of a sudden
[1:21:43] Speaker 17: the graphics will pop in like it's drawing in differently.
[1:21:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, and that could be.
[1:21:49] Speaker 17: Yeah, and I see other people when they make a
[1:21:51] Speaker 17: video of it or or whatever on YouTube it looks
[1:21:54] Speaker 17: like it's crystal Okay.
[1:21:55] Speaker 1: Well, then in that case, I think it might. I might,
[1:21:58] Speaker 1: you know, I might be convinced that this would work.
[1:22:00] Speaker 1: So because again you're getting that that source, it still
[1:22:03] Speaker 1: has to come from somewhere, especially the way that you're
[1:22:05] Speaker 1: running this. So if the source is good, I think
[1:22:09] Speaker 1: it would be better in the headset. I think if
[1:22:11] Speaker 1: you're looking overall, if you're trying to say like, oh,
[1:22:13] Speaker 1: nothing looks good in there, or the actual physical limitations
[1:22:17] Speaker 1: of the graphics on the Quest two, you know, the
[1:22:20] Speaker 1: VR headset that you're using, or the Quest three, rather,
[1:22:23] Speaker 1: I think that would probably be you know, you wouldn't
[1:22:25] Speaker 1: see much of an upgrade there. If you're looking. Let's
[1:22:28] Speaker 1: say you go into like the home screen of the
[1:22:29] Speaker 1: Quest right, and you're just not happy with those graphics.
[1:22:32] Speaker 1: If those look great and then you go into your
[1:22:34] Speaker 1: game and little things aren't refreshing inside the game or
[1:22:36] Speaker 1: drawing as quickly, I think that probably would be helped,
[1:22:40] Speaker 1: So I would I would probably try it for sure,
[1:22:43] Speaker 1: and see how how old is your graphics card?
[1:22:46] Speaker 17: Well, the twenty eighties probably about four years old, and
[1:22:50] Speaker 17: twenty seventy. The other one is probably about the same,
[1:22:52] Speaker 17: probably about four years old. Now, yeah, I know they're
[1:22:54] Speaker 17: getting dated.
[1:22:54] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it would make a difference. I think,
[1:22:57] Speaker 1: you know, maybe try you know, getting one and putting
[1:23:00] Speaker 1: it in the computer, checking it out, see what happens,
[1:23:02] Speaker 1: and if it you know, obviously get it from a
[1:23:05] Speaker 1: source that you can return it if you're not, you know,
[1:23:07] Speaker 1: happy with the results. But that's what I would do.
[1:23:10] Speaker 17: One quick, one more quick one. I noticed that the
[1:23:13] Speaker 17: one system I have an until nine system, and then
[1:23:15] Speaker 17: I got the eight zoo I seven on the I
[1:23:18] Speaker 17: nine system. All of a sudden, once in a while,
[1:23:20] Speaker 17: that's fandal just start cranking up in that machine will
[1:23:22] Speaker 17: run full blast forever until I actually reboot the machine.
[1:23:26] Speaker 17: It will stop or it will hit and miss. Within
[1:23:28] Speaker 17: a couple of minutes, red up real high.
[1:23:30] Speaker 3: And you're down.
[1:23:30] Speaker 17: Red up real high and you're down. And I couldn't
[1:23:33] Speaker 17: figure out. I thought maybe some drivers or something that's
[1:23:35] Speaker 17: interfering with it. It's trying to trigger something, and I
[1:23:38] Speaker 17: can't figure out what that might be.
[1:23:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it definitely sounds like a software issue
[1:23:43] Speaker 1: because it shouldn't. It shouldn't need to be running the
[1:23:46] Speaker 1: fan all the time. So I would I would try, yeah,
[1:23:49] Speaker 1: double checking those settings on those for sure, and seeing
[1:23:54] Speaker 1: maybe if you kind of spoot it up in safe mode,
[1:23:56] Speaker 1: if it if it's still happening there. Great question, Steven Tampas,
[1:24:00] Speaker 1: like you got a little project DIY ahead of you.
[1:24:02] Speaker 1: I love that kind of stuff. Eighty eight rich one
[1:24:04] Speaker 1: O one eight eight eight seven four two four one
[1:24:06] Speaker 1: zero one. Coming up, We've got an update on the
[1:24:09] Speaker 1: healthcare data breach. I'll tell you about that right here.
[1:24:12] Speaker 1: I'm rich on Tech. Welcome back to rich on Tech.
[1:24:15] Speaker 1: Rich Demiro here hanging out with you, talking technology the
[1:24:18] Speaker 1: website for the show richon Tech dot TV. Coming up
[1:24:24] Speaker 1: this hour, we're going to talk to social media cyber
[1:24:27] Speaker 1: security influencer Caitlin Sarian. She's known as the cyber Security Girl.
[1:24:33] Speaker 1: She's going to join us to talk all things cybersecurity.
[1:24:38] Speaker 1: Let's see, I think we have time to get to
[1:24:39] Speaker 1: a call. Here, let's go to uh, let's see. Oh
[1:24:43] Speaker 1: well never mind, let's uh, let's go to this.
[1:24:47] Speaker 13: Uh.
[1:24:47] Speaker 1: Let's see here. I told you about Nintendo. They've got
[1:24:50] Speaker 1: a new a new app that streams video game music.
[1:24:54] Speaker 1: So this is called Nintendo Music and is available for
[1:24:58] Speaker 1: iPhone and Android and think spot. But just with song
[1:25:02] Speaker 1: from the last forty years of Nintendo games, Mario, Zelda,
[1:25:07] Speaker 1: Kirby's Adventure, Pickman. So let's see. I can bring it
[1:25:10] Speaker 1: up on my phone. Here I downloaded it. You have
[1:25:13] Speaker 1: to have a subscription to the Nintendo Switch online. But
[1:25:18] Speaker 1: they've got all kinds of songs. They've got all kinds
[1:25:21] Speaker 1: of playlists. You can download them for offline listening. You
[1:25:24] Speaker 1: can loop them if you want to like study to them.
[1:25:27] Speaker 1: So let's see. Okay, so here's the Super Mario series.
[1:25:30] Speaker 1: So this is remember Doctor Mario. Remember that you can
[1:25:36] Speaker 1: just listen to that. So if you just want to
[1:25:37] Speaker 1: listen for hours on end, that's a four minute song. Okay,
[1:25:40] Speaker 1: who would have thought? How about when you go underground
[1:25:43] Speaker 1: in Super Mario Brothers? Remember this, I mean, come on.
[1:25:48] Speaker 1: This is so iconic. I love this stuff. I was
[1:25:52] Speaker 1: actually on my bike yesterday with my kid and I
[1:25:55] Speaker 1: literally just put this on while we were driving the bike.
[1:25:58] Speaker 1: Here we go, and it felt like we were in
[1:26:03] Speaker 1: a video game, like we were just going down the
[1:26:05] Speaker 1: bike path and we're just in a video game. So
[1:26:08] Speaker 1: this is just the Mario stuff. Obviously, there's so much more.
[1:26:11] Speaker 1: I mean, this is, you know, from Mario, the Mario
[1:26:15] Speaker 1: Kart Dround, Rainbow Road. So this is all the stuff
[1:26:19] Speaker 1: that you just took for granted, that you just kind
[1:26:21] Speaker 1: of had in the background while you're playing your video games.
[1:26:23] Speaker 1: But now it is literally on a It's it's literally
[1:26:27] Speaker 1: on an app. So I love this. Let's see oh Bowser.
[1:26:31] Speaker 1: Oh you can also do this. You can also select
[1:26:33] Speaker 1: a character and see all the music that that character
[1:26:37] Speaker 1: has been associated with. So again, if here's Bowser, remember this.
[1:26:43] Speaker 1: That's when you're underground and those fire ball like things
[1:26:47] Speaker 1: are swooping trying to kill you. This is just great.
[1:26:50] Speaker 1: I love this. So Bowser's got a lot of songs.
[1:26:53] Speaker 1: This is this is from Super Mario Brothers, Wonder a
[1:26:59] Speaker 1: little bit of a newer So anyway, so that's available.
[1:27:02] Speaker 1: It is available on the iPhone and Android, and it
[1:27:06] Speaker 1: is it's free if you have that online as Nintendo
[1:27:10] Speaker 1: Switch thing, so you got to pay twenty bucks for
[1:27:12] Speaker 1: twelve months, but kind of fun. If you love Nintendo stuff,
[1:27:15] Speaker 1: you got to try it out. Mint Mobile is launching
[1:27:18] Speaker 1: a kid focused wireless plan fifteen bucks a month gives
[1:27:22] Speaker 1: you unlimited talk and text plus five gigabytes of data.
[1:27:25] Speaker 1: This runs on T mobiles network. Obviously Mint Mobile was
[1:27:29] Speaker 1: purchased by T Mobile, and parents can see the amount
[1:27:32] Speaker 1: of data they use. They can get all the account
[1:27:34] Speaker 1: communications and alerts. I don't think that means you can
[1:27:37] Speaker 1: see all their texts and stuff. I think it just
[1:27:38] Speaker 1: means like if there's an issue with their account, you
[1:27:40] Speaker 1: can see it. No contracts, and of course they have
[1:27:44] Speaker 1: free roaming in Canada, free calling to Mexico and Canada,
[1:27:48] Speaker 1: free mobile hotspot Wi Fi calling available now online coming
[1:27:51] Speaker 1: to Target next month again fifteen bucks a month for
[1:27:54] Speaker 1: a kid focused wireless plan. So get them a smartphone.
[1:27:59] Speaker 1: You just want to act. The problem is everyone's activating
[1:28:02] Speaker 1: their smartphones now through one of these big plans. You know,
[1:28:05] Speaker 1: they got these family plans and they're buying the phone
[1:28:07] Speaker 1: from the carrier. So It gets really tricky to use
[1:28:10] Speaker 1: a plan like this because even though you'll save a
[1:28:12] Speaker 1: lot of money, most people don't want to deal with
[1:28:14] Speaker 1: the phone situation. They want to just pay the phone
[1:28:17] Speaker 1: off over thirty six months, and so it's just easier
[1:28:19] Speaker 1: to go through their primary carrier. But option. It's good
[1:28:22] Speaker 1: to have options. And this United Healthcare. Remember this thing
[1:28:26] Speaker 1: that happened back in February. This was a breach one
[1:28:29] Speaker 1: hundred million people, affected third of the US population. This
[1:28:33] Speaker 1: was a medical breach, had all kinds of information. This
[1:28:36] Speaker 1: was through their Change Healthcare subsidiary. It was a ransomware
[1:28:40] Speaker 1: attack one hundred million people. Now we've got the confirmation
[1:28:43] Speaker 1: of what happened here. The breach happened in February. Notifications
[1:28:46] Speaker 1: were sent out in June. Stolen information included health insurance data,
[1:28:51] Speaker 1: medical records, test results, prescription information, billing and claims data,
[1:28:55] Speaker 1: financial and banking details, social security numbers, drivers licenses, passport numbers,
[1:29:02] Speaker 1: basically all the information that people shared with this Change Healthcare.
[1:29:06] Speaker 1: They actually paid twenty two million dollars in this ransomware attack,
[1:29:10] Speaker 1: twenty two million dollars to try to tell these guys, hey,
[1:29:13] Speaker 1: please don't put this information out there and they did anyway,
[1:29:16] Speaker 1: what did they do wrong? There was no multi factor authentication.
[1:29:21] Speaker 1: They didn't have that two factor authentication enabled on their accounts.
[1:29:24] Speaker 1: You need to do that, Big companies need to do it.
[1:29:27] Speaker 1: Apparently there's also some previously compromised credentials that were used
[1:29:31] Speaker 1: in this attack, and overall their security was just not
[1:29:34] Speaker 1: very good. So this is the problem. We are sharing
[1:29:37] Speaker 1: more information with these big companies than ever before. We
[1:29:40] Speaker 1: share this information and they now have to protect this information,
[1:29:44] Speaker 1: and as we've seen with all of these data breaches,
[1:29:46] Speaker 1: it often does not happen. They are just as susceptible
[1:29:50] Speaker 1: to ransomware and hack attacks as we are. So please
[1:29:53] Speaker 1: strong passwords, multi factor authentication. Please do those two things.
[1:29:58] Speaker 1: Use a password manager, use unique passwords, and don't share
[1:30:01] Speaker 1: more information than you have to. Question every time a
[1:30:04] Speaker 1: website asks you for information, if you don't need to
[1:30:07] Speaker 1: put it in there, don't do it. Coming up next,
[1:30:09] Speaker 1: we're gonna talk more cybersecurity with the cybersecurity Girl. Right here.
[1:30:13] Speaker 1: I'm rich on Tech. Welcome back to rich on Tech.
[1:30:16] Speaker 1: Rich DeMuro here hanging out with you talking technology at
[1:30:21] Speaker 1: Triple eight. Rich one O one Oh, I'm gonna get
[1:30:24] Speaker 1: I'm gonna get trouble from Kim for giving out the
[1:30:26] Speaker 1: phone number. I think our time for calls has elapsed.
[1:30:30] Speaker 1: Website Rich on tech dot Tv. Joining me now is
[1:30:34] Speaker 1: social media cybersecurity influencer Kaitlin Sarian, known as cyber Security
[1:30:40] Speaker 1: Girl Online. Thanks so much for joining me, Kaitlin.
[1:30:44] Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks for having me Rich. Really excited to be here.
[1:30:46] Speaker 1: So you are very popular on what you made your
[1:30:50] Speaker 1: name on what TikTok or what.
[1:30:52] Speaker 18: Originally TikTok, and then I slowly moved off and just
[1:30:54] Speaker 18: really focused on Instagram.
[1:30:56] Speaker 1: So ah, oh really interesting. Okay, why why the change?
[1:31:01] Speaker 18: You know, it's a lot longer of a story than
[1:31:03] Speaker 18: I think the segment we have. But I actually loved TikTok.
[1:31:07] Speaker 18: I still love TikTok, but I just felt like when
[1:31:09] Speaker 18: they got TikTok Shop, it wasn't really pushing out the
[1:31:12] Speaker 18: way that I wanted to. And I think Instagram really
[1:31:15] Speaker 18: like ramped up, and I really wanted to reach as
[1:31:18] Speaker 18: many people as possible, and my videos just weren't doing
[1:31:20] Speaker 18: as well on TikTok anymore.
[1:31:21] Speaker 5: So I decided to move over.
[1:31:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard that they're pushing that TikTok shop and
[1:31:25] Speaker 1: Instagram is a great place because you reach a wide
[1:31:27] Speaker 1: swath of people. I feel like TikTok is a little
[1:31:30] Speaker 1: more directed towards either young users or you know, it's
[1:31:34] Speaker 1: just I feel like Instagram is everyone. It's like everyone
[1:31:36] Speaker 1: on Instagram. So first off, I mean, what video did
[1:31:41] Speaker 1: you make first that popped Like what was the first
[1:31:43] Speaker 1: kind of thing that you did that you really think
[1:31:46] Speaker 1: helped people and kind of got you some recognition.
[1:31:49] Speaker 18: Yeah, the first video was like three months into my
[1:31:51] Speaker 18: TikTok journey, and it was actually about how you can
[1:31:54] Speaker 18: see if your data has been breached in any of
[1:31:56] Speaker 18: the previous beat breaches and it's have I been poned?
[1:32:01] Speaker 18: And so people had never heard of this. This was
[1:32:03] Speaker 18: like three years ago.
[1:32:04] Speaker 5: And you can literally like type in your email and.
[1:32:06] Speaker 18: Also tell you every data breach that your email popped
[1:32:10] Speaker 18: up in on the dark web and tells you, you know,
[1:32:12] Speaker 18: what other information was out there. So it's a really
[1:32:15] Speaker 18: cool resource and it's free and it was created by
[1:32:17] Speaker 18: an amazing man, so it's like it's very reliable, it's
[1:32:20] Speaker 18: not just like some creepy resource. And that was the
[1:32:23] Speaker 18: first video that absolutely just I think it hit like
[1:32:25] Speaker 18: seven hundred thousand views in like a day, and it
[1:32:27] Speaker 18: was just it was great.
[1:32:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, people are concerned. We actually have. I've talked about
[1:32:32] Speaker 1: the haven been pned on this show, and people are
[1:32:35] Speaker 1: concerned about putting in their email address into the website.
[1:32:38] Speaker 1: You're like, well, wait a second, are they going to
[1:32:39] Speaker 1: hack me? And it is kind of a funny name
[1:32:41] Speaker 1: unless you kind of understand what that's all about. But
[1:32:44] Speaker 1: it is a very helpful resource and it's pretty wild
[1:32:47] Speaker 1: what's out there. I mean, we were just talking about
[1:32:48] Speaker 1: a data breach before the break, and I mean it's
[1:32:51] Speaker 1: a question we get all the time, is like what
[1:32:53] Speaker 1: do you do about all your information that's out there?
[1:32:55] Speaker 1: I Mean, it's really tough to pull this stuff back
[1:32:57] Speaker 1: once it's out, especially on the dark web. Is that
[1:33:00] Speaker 1: your take as well?
[1:33:02] Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean there's certain things.
[1:33:03] Speaker 18: I mean, there's different reasons why people hack, right, So
[1:33:07] Speaker 18: it really depends on what angle you're going at. But
[1:33:09] Speaker 18: for me, like if I'm really concerned about when people
[1:33:13] Speaker 18: are getting into my social media because I have a
[1:33:14] Speaker 18: big target on my back considering I am a cybersqity influencer,
[1:33:17] Speaker 18: and a lot of hackers want to do.
[1:33:18] Speaker 5: It just to prove themselves.
[1:33:21] Speaker 18: It's just a cool thing to be like, yeah, I
[1:33:22] Speaker 18: hacked cybersecurity girl, So I'm mortified to that. So I
[1:33:26] Speaker 18: make sure I do you know all of my kind
[1:33:27] Speaker 18: of cybersecurity hygiene, which is good passwords, multi factor authentication,
[1:33:33] Speaker 18: you know, well other stuff that will go through. But
[1:33:35] Speaker 18: there's other things like you know, I don't want anyone
[1:33:37] Speaker 18: to use my data against me, and like you know,
[1:33:40] Speaker 18: start creating accounts because at this point, I think it's
[1:33:43] Speaker 18: pretty safe to say that everyone's data is breached and
[1:33:46] Speaker 18: most of our social media social security numbers are also breached.
[1:33:49] Speaker 18: So the best advice I have for people that are
[1:33:51] Speaker 18: actually worried about that is to lock your credit because
[1:33:55] Speaker 18: a lot of people are worried that people are going
[1:33:56] Speaker 18: to steal their identity, which is a totally normal thing
[1:33:59] Speaker 18: and can happen to many of us because our information
[1:34:02] Speaker 18: is out there on the dark web, and I know
[1:34:03] Speaker 18: a lot of people like, oh that, why would that
[1:34:05] Speaker 18: happen to me? It doesn't matter. You're a dollar signed
[1:34:07] Speaker 18: to everyone. So even if you're you think that you're
[1:34:10] Speaker 18: a nobody, you're not a nobody. You're still worth something
[1:34:13] Speaker 18: to a hacker. So if you're really concerned with you know,
[1:34:15] Speaker 18: identity staft. I would lock your credit scores.
[1:34:18] Speaker 1: Down so crazy, so so credit reports, lock those down,
[1:34:21] Speaker 1: freeze those, which which I did after the latest Uh.
[1:34:24] Speaker 1: I think it was the if it was either the
[1:34:26] Speaker 1: AT and T whatever one had, like the social it
[1:34:28] Speaker 1: was like the really big oh the national public data
[1:34:31] Speaker 1: that was it.
[1:34:31] Speaker 18: It was like, oh my back on check service. I
[1:34:34] Speaker 18: did it too. I locked down all of them.
[1:34:36] Speaker 5: I'm like, this is I can't even deal with this anymore.
[1:34:38] Speaker 18: I'm not I'm not applying at credit cards or home
[1:34:41] Speaker 18: loan anytime soon.
[1:34:42] Speaker 5: I can keep them locked.
[1:34:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, that's the main thing. So what do you think? Okay,
[1:34:45] Speaker 1: so social media, I get so many questions. People have
[1:34:49] Speaker 1: their Facebook account hacked, They've got their Instagram hacked. I mean,
[1:34:52] Speaker 1: what's the best way to protect those accounts?
[1:34:55] Speaker 18: Yeah, I mean so I feel like I have to
[1:34:58] Speaker 18: hit my head on the like the chalkboard every time
[1:35:00] Speaker 18: because I'm just like, this is so old school.
[1:35:02] Speaker 15: In the state.
[1:35:02] Speaker 18: It's the same for everything, right, So strong passwords like
[1:35:05] Speaker 18: I say this over and over again, and people really
[1:35:07] Speaker 18: underestimate that. But what people don't realize is that if
[1:35:10] Speaker 18: they reuse the password and it's leaked on the dark web,
[1:35:13] Speaker 18: even if they change. Like I say, there's a base password,
[1:35:15] Speaker 18: and like a lot of people use like a base password,
[1:35:18] Speaker 18: Like say, for example, I've always used the word macaroni
[1:35:22] Speaker 18: in my in my password, right, then I add macaroni one,
[1:35:26] Speaker 18: macaroni one two, three, macaroni one to three exclamation point.
[1:35:29] Speaker 18: The thing is, when hackers get your base password, they
[1:35:32] Speaker 18: have an algorithm that can run about ten thousand different
[1:35:35] Speaker 18: types of passwords, different variations of that one password in minutes,
[1:35:39] Speaker 18: and they can easily get into your account. So it's
[1:35:41] Speaker 18: not just you know, changing it, and it's making them unique,
[1:35:44] Speaker 18: especially for the accounts that are important. Like it's really hard,
[1:35:48] Speaker 18: Like I know, general users going to be like I
[1:35:50] Speaker 18: can't remember these passwords, Like there's no way I can
[1:35:52] Speaker 18: remember them all. So first of all, I would identify
[1:35:55] Speaker 18: which ones, which accounts are the most important to you
[1:35:57] Speaker 18: and definitely make unique ones for that. Then you don't
[1:36:00] Speaker 18: like to say passwords. We like to say pass phrases
[1:36:02] Speaker 18: because you want to make like a fun sentence, and
[1:36:04] Speaker 18: a lot of people that I know actually make you know,
[1:36:07] Speaker 18: some type of type of sentence in their head. So say,
[1:36:11] Speaker 18: for example, they say I love, and then they put
[1:36:14] Speaker 18: the name of the website they're using, and then have
[1:36:17] Speaker 18: a funny word and then have their favorite number. I
[1:36:19] Speaker 18: mean it's different for everyone, but you're changing a certain
[1:36:22] Speaker 18: part of that password that's completely unique for the app
[1:36:25] Speaker 18: that you're doing. The other thing that's easiest for me
[1:36:28] Speaker 18: as a cybersecurity person is a password manager, which automatically
[1:36:32] Speaker 18: generates these unique passwords and stores them and it signs them,
[1:36:34] Speaker 18: so it's really easy to find. But I know a
[1:36:36] Speaker 18: lot of people don't do that, so passwords are super important.
[1:36:39] Speaker 18: And then the other thing is multi factor authentication, which
[1:36:41] Speaker 18: means you're not just signing in with your username and password,
[1:36:44] Speaker 18: you're also signing in a third us. Well, technically it's
[1:36:47] Speaker 18: a second way. A second way with like a unique
[1:36:50] Speaker 18: code that's either sent to your phone, sent to your email,
[1:36:54] Speaker 18: or an authenticator app. And I will preface this, you
[1:36:57] Speaker 18: want to make it to your authenticator app because there's
[1:36:59] Speaker 18: a lot of sim swapping. And then also if you're
[1:37:02] Speaker 18: reusing the same password for your email and the code
[1:37:03] Speaker 18: get sent your email, they already are in your email.
[1:37:06] Speaker 18: So I would prefer to do authenticator app. But even
[1:37:10] Speaker 18: with just those two tips, it sounds so basic, and
[1:37:12] Speaker 18: I know you, I know probably everyone's heard them. Even
[1:37:15] Speaker 18: with those two tips, strong unique passwords and multi factor authentation,
[1:37:19] Speaker 18: those prevent almost ninety per I would say even more
[1:37:22] Speaker 18: than ninety percent of you know, Facebook social media hacks.
[1:37:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, because a lot of it's phishing too, where they're
[1:37:27] Speaker 1: sending you a text and you, like for Facebook, let's
[1:37:32] Speaker 1: say they send you like a you get a notification
[1:37:33] Speaker 1: that says, oh, you have copyright infringement on your page.
[1:37:36] Speaker 1: You're like, wait what and it's like log in here
[1:37:38] Speaker 1: and you do it so fast, and if you don't
[1:37:40] Speaker 1: have that two factor on, you've just handed over your
[1:37:42] Speaker 1: your password to the bad folks. And you know, if
[1:37:45] Speaker 1: you have two factor, you're going to get a code
[1:37:46] Speaker 1: texted and you're gonna be like, wait, what what? What?
[1:37:49] Speaker 1: What I just do? Is there any password manager that
[1:37:51] Speaker 1: you like or any two factor app that you like
[1:37:53] Speaker 1: that you recommend?
[1:37:55] Speaker 14: Yeah?
[1:37:56] Speaker 18: So, I mean I the only one I wouldn't recommend
[1:37:58] Speaker 18: for password manager is the last because they've actually been
[1:38:01] Speaker 18: breached a lot of times, I think at least two,
[1:38:04] Speaker 18: which means that your passwords that are stored on there
[1:38:06] Speaker 18: have also most likely been breached so I use one
[1:38:09] Speaker 18: password and I actually use because I'm very paranoid, I
[1:38:12] Speaker 18: use multiple, but I rarely recommend any of them except
[1:38:15] Speaker 18: for last past Keeper. Security is also great. VPN services,
[1:38:21] Speaker 18: there is a lot. I love Nord VPN. I know
[1:38:25] Speaker 18: a lot of people use EXPRESSDPN, but I'm not sure
[1:38:28] Speaker 18: the founder of that is a little sketchy to me.
[1:38:30] Speaker 18: So I used to recommend ExpressVPN. Now I'm moved over
[1:38:32] Speaker 18: to Nord and I actually have three VPN services too
[1:38:35] Speaker 18: because I'm paranoid. I'm a cybersecurity expert, but one VPN
[1:38:39] Speaker 18: is enough. So any VPN I would probably recommend.
[1:38:42] Speaker 5: Yeah, any of them, They're all great.
[1:38:44] Speaker 1: Any other issue, We've got about a minute here, What
[1:38:47] Speaker 1: any other issue that you think people should know about.
[1:38:49] Speaker 1: Any other tips that you want to offer or things
[1:38:52] Speaker 1: that you see that you think you know should be addressed.
[1:38:55] Speaker 5: Yeah, so there's a few. One is we need to
[1:38:58] Speaker 5: stop thinking that we have everyone should see everything about
[1:39:01] Speaker 5: our lives.
[1:39:02] Speaker 18: Like the number one ship I have is to just
[1:39:04] Speaker 18: start making your profiles private.
[1:39:06] Speaker 5: Lock it down. Like with AI.
[1:39:07] Speaker 18: Right now, they can scan pictures that you post, even
[1:39:10] Speaker 18: with nothing in them. They can pretty much tell you
[1:39:12] Speaker 18: that your exact location that has posted, so even for
[1:39:15] Speaker 18: family safety, your safety, like just if you don't need
[1:39:18] Speaker 18: to be public, like if you have friends already that
[1:39:20] Speaker 18: are like following you, you don't need to be public.
[1:39:22] Speaker 18: Like why does the public need to know everything that
[1:39:24] Speaker 18: you do unless you're trying to be an influencer. So
[1:39:26] Speaker 18: I would fully recommend to make every all of your
[1:39:29] Speaker 18: profiles private and then also just give out the least
[1:39:32] Speaker 18: amount of data that you can't, like, try not to
[1:39:36] Speaker 18: post everything, and like sign up for every account, try
[1:39:39] Speaker 18: to check out as a guest the least, Like the
[1:39:42] Speaker 18: less information people have on you, the less it's going
[1:39:44] Speaker 18: to be on the data brokers, which is like everywhere
[1:39:46] Speaker 18: in the US people keep saying, oh I keep the
[1:39:48] Speaker 18: leading them from data brokers, but it keeps popping back up.
[1:39:50] Speaker 5: I'm like, well, how.
[1:39:51] Speaker 18: Many more accounts have you be created in the last month?
[1:39:53] Speaker 18: You probably don't even realize, So just really try to
[1:39:56] Speaker 18: limit we like to call it it's your digital footprint.
[1:39:58] Speaker 18: Check out as a guest, try to be private, and
[1:40:01] Speaker 18: then those there's four kind of tips for everyone, so
[1:40:05] Speaker 18: strong passwords and multi factor on the authentication, which we've
[1:40:07] Speaker 18: already talked about.
[1:40:08] Speaker 5: Update your software. It's very very important.
[1:40:11] Speaker 18: People think that updating, you know, a phone, means that
[1:40:14] Speaker 18: it's going to go slower, and that couldn't be further
[1:40:16] Speaker 18: from the truth.
[1:40:17] Speaker 5: Software updates patch vulnerabilities, which means that they.
[1:40:20] Speaker 18: Patch basically open spots that hackers can get into in
[1:40:24] Speaker 18: that app or software. So update your software and just
[1:40:27] Speaker 18: really avoid clicking on any links or be really really
[1:40:30] Speaker 18: cautious if any link is getting sent to you or
[1:40:33] Speaker 18: any weird message that gets sent to you, because we
[1:40:36] Speaker 18: live in a crazy world right now where everyone's trying
[1:40:38] Speaker 18: to get in, hack in, and get have whatever whatever
[1:40:42] Speaker 18: reason it is they're trying to get in, So just
[1:40:44] Speaker 18: be very suspicious, go with your gut.
[1:40:47] Speaker 5: So those are the kind of high level tips.
[1:40:49] Speaker 1: That I have, and the main reason they're trying to
[1:40:50] Speaker 1: get in. It all comes back to money. We know
[1:40:52] Speaker 1: that they're trying to steal our identity, trying to steal
[1:40:54] Speaker 1: our money. And believe me, I'm sure you hear it
[1:40:57] Speaker 1: as much as I do. This stuff actually happens on
[1:41:00] Speaker 1: a daily basis. Yes, people fall for this stuff. Yes
[1:41:02] Speaker 1: people are getting money taken from them and it's really
[1:41:05] Speaker 1: tough to get it back. Caitlin Sarian cyber security Girl
[1:41:09] Speaker 1: on Instagram. Thanks so much for joining me today.
[1:41:12] Speaker 5: Thanks very much, Rich, I appreciate it.
[1:41:14] Speaker 1: Really good tips. Follow her on Instagram cyber security Girl.
[1:41:19] Speaker 1: Coming up, we're going to open up the feedbag and
[1:41:21] Speaker 1: we'll hear what you had to say this week in tech.
[1:41:26] Speaker 1: Welcome back to Rich on Tech. Rich DeMuro here talking
[1:41:29] Speaker 1: technology with you. Let me go through a couple of
[1:41:32] Speaker 1: lightning round stories before we get to the feedbag. First up,
[1:41:37] Speaker 1: Google is launching a certified refurbished Pixel phone program, so
[1:41:41] Speaker 1: you can buy a refurbished Pixel for up to forty
[1:41:44] Speaker 1: percent off. This is the Pixel six and Pixel seven series.
[1:41:48] Speaker 1: You can get these things for starting at to think
[1:41:50] Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty dollars. They inspect them, the battery,
[1:41:54] Speaker 1: the housing, the screens, they repair them with Google parts,
[1:41:56] Speaker 1: They install the latest software, even get a new box
[1:42:00] Speaker 1: and a compatible charger included. So if you want a
[1:42:02] Speaker 1: cheap phone, refurbished Pixel, it's a great, great device, even refurbished. Samsung, meanwhile,
[1:42:09] Speaker 1: is expanding its device repair network. This is one of
[1:42:12] Speaker 1: the big downsides of Samsung versus Apple. Apple has all
[1:42:16] Speaker 1: the Apple stores with Samsung repairs. Sometimes they could be
[1:42:18] Speaker 1: a little trickier, but this is the website to know.
[1:42:22] Speaker 1: Sell phone Repair dot com. Sell phone Repair dot com.
[1:42:26] Speaker 1: These are the official locations from the Total Assurance Repair Network.
[1:42:31] Speaker 1: Now they have nine hundred locations where they can do
[1:42:34] Speaker 1: out of warranty repairs, screen repairs, battery replacements, and device accessories.
[1:42:39] Speaker 1: Most repairs are done in under an hour and they
[1:42:41] Speaker 1: use genuine Samsung parts. So again, sell phone Repair dot com.
[1:42:46] Speaker 1: Bookmark that if you have a Samsung device if you
[1:42:48] Speaker 1: ever need help with it. And I thought this was interesting.
[1:42:51] Speaker 1: An ex Disney employee faces prison for hacking their menu system.
[1:42:57] Speaker 1: So this employee allegedly used their credentials to access Once
[1:43:01] Speaker 1: they got fired, they logged into Disney Systems and changed
[1:43:05] Speaker 1: their menu system. They changed all the fonts to the
[1:43:08] Speaker 1: wing ding symbols, you know, those funny symbols you can't
[1:43:11] Speaker 1: do anything with. But this is a scarier part. They
[1:43:14] Speaker 1: deleted all of the allergen information for menus. So that's
[1:43:18] Speaker 1: kind of nefarious right there. I get the silliness of
[1:43:21] Speaker 1: changing to the wing dings, but deleting the allergen information
[1:43:25] Speaker 1: is not cool. So the menu system went offline for
[1:43:28] Speaker 1: several weeks. Of course, they had to go to their backup,
[1:43:31] Speaker 1: which I guess Disney had. Thankfully, this person now faces
[1:43:35] Speaker 1: up to fifteen years in jail. And by the way,
[1:43:38] Speaker 1: this is the main takeaway. If your a company revoke
[1:43:41] Speaker 1: your employees access credentials immediately, do not let them linger
[1:43:46] Speaker 1: on that network. They must be gone from that system immediately.
[1:43:51] Speaker 1: And also have a backup system. Have a backup, because
[1:43:54] Speaker 1: if someone messes with your system, you got to get
[1:43:56] Speaker 1: to that backup. All right, let's get to the feedback.
[1:43:58] Speaker 1: Let's open this up. Melissa wrote in from Covina. I
[1:44:02] Speaker 1: love the Top ten. I found many of my favorite
[1:44:04] Speaker 1: movies and series from there. It's a time saver on
[1:44:07] Speaker 1: Hulu as well. I don't always agree with most of it,
[1:44:10] Speaker 1: but it is what it is. I don't have Netflix
[1:44:12] Speaker 1: right now, so their account sharing crackdown worked on me, sadly. Okay,
[1:44:17] Speaker 1: you know you can pay for your own account, Melissa,
[1:44:19] Speaker 1: thanks for the email. David from Saint Louis listen to
[1:44:22] Speaker 1: the podcast, he says, Hey, Rich, I was listening to
[1:44:24] Speaker 1: the show. I want to share my experience with to Doist.
[1:44:27] Speaker 1: I recently discovered it and fell in love with how
[1:44:29] Speaker 1: quickly I can capture tasks. I can forward emails to
[1:44:32] Speaker 1: create tasks within specific projects. I can use browser ad
[1:44:35] Speaker 1: ins to save weblinks for later. It integrates with Google Calendar,
[1:44:39] Speaker 1: lets you assign tasks to projects at du dates, reminders,
[1:44:42] Speaker 1: and priorities. It even has AI to create subtasks. For example,
[1:44:46] Speaker 1: it can generate a packing list for a trip. I'm
[1:44:48] Speaker 1: probably not doing it justice, but thought I would share.
[1:44:51] Speaker 1: Thank you, David. I have tried to doist in the past.
[1:44:53] Speaker 1: I actually do like it. It just maybe didn't have
[1:44:56] Speaker 1: one feature that I liked, or I think you had
[1:44:58] Speaker 1: to pay for something that I wanted. So good suggestion there,
[1:45:02] Speaker 1: Dan writes in Love the show listen every week. This
[1:45:05] Speaker 1: week or last week, you mentioned a listener who sawed
[1:45:07] Speaker 1: off his phone charger connector. I agree that does not
[1:45:11] Speaker 1: sound safe and I would never do that. Not safe
[1:45:13] Speaker 1: for the phone, and I'd be afraid of an electrical short.
[1:45:16] Speaker 1: I did want to mention that they should check his
[1:45:17] Speaker 1: phone port and try to clean it. I once noticed
[1:45:20] Speaker 1: trouble charging and realized the USBC didn't have that happy
[1:45:23] Speaker 1: click when fully inserted. I used a plastic toothpick, one
[1:45:26] Speaker 1: of those disposable flossers. You would not believe how much
[1:45:29] Speaker 1: pocket lint came out of the phone port. Once I
[1:45:31] Speaker 1: did that, the USBC went in smoothly. They sell cleaning
[1:45:34] Speaker 1: kits on Amazon. Hopefully you can pass this long. Yes,
[1:45:38] Speaker 1: I thought I mentioned that with the sowd off USBC,
[1:45:41] Speaker 1: which you should never do. But yes, the cleaning the
[1:45:44] Speaker 1: USBC ports do get clogged with lint, so went in doubt.
[1:45:47] Speaker 1: When there's an issue with the connection, phone's not charging,
[1:45:50] Speaker 1: check for lint in there. Just be gentle in that hole.
[1:45:56] Speaker 1: Michael from Santa Fe listens on KTRC. He says, sorry, Rich,
[1:46:01] Speaker 1: but facts is still essential in many industries. Healthcare relies
[1:46:04] Speaker 1: heavily on FACTS because it's HIPPOC compliant. How's a facts
[1:46:07] Speaker 1: hippoc compliant and provides proof of transmission unlike email. I
[1:46:12] Speaker 1: use it for insurance documents, doctors use it for prescriptions
[1:46:15] Speaker 1: and lab works. Some restaurants even take FACTS orders. It's
[1:46:18] Speaker 1: more secure and more reliable than most people think. Thank you.
[1:46:21] Speaker 1: Michael Gary writes in oh another facts machine, Hey, Rich.
[1:46:25] Speaker 1: One place where fax machines still seem to be very
[1:46:28] Speaker 1: prevalent is in doctor's offices and other medical facilities. I
[1:46:31] Speaker 1: see them still being used in those locations. I'm sorry,
[1:46:34] Speaker 1: but medical offices are so behind the times ninety nine
[1:46:37] Speaker 1: percent of the time. In fact, I just signed up
[1:46:39] Speaker 1: with that Amazon one Medical to see how that all is,
[1:46:42] Speaker 1: because it's like all done through the app. So I
[1:46:45] Speaker 1: love doctors. I think they're amazing. Thank you for doing
[1:46:47] Speaker 1: your incredible work. But all I want to do is
[1:46:50] Speaker 1: make my appointment online, see my results online, do everything online.
[1:46:54] Speaker 1: I don't want to have to talk to anyone. I
[1:46:55] Speaker 1: just want to go in and that's it. I guess
[1:46:58] Speaker 1: that's too much to ask. Lily from Orange, just a
[1:47:03] Speaker 1: great big thank you for translating tech lexicon to ordinary English.
[1:47:07] Speaker 1: I'm a senior citizen, middle to low tech enabled person
[1:47:10] Speaker 1: and I really appreciate how you distill the mumbo jumbo
[1:47:12] Speaker 1: and tell us how too. I also like the scammer
[1:47:15] Speaker 1: alerts your ardent follower, Lily from Orange, Thank you, Lily.
[1:47:20] Speaker 1: Jeff writes in here, Rich, I was listening to your
[1:47:22] Speaker 1: October show about visiting Microcenter. I love going there and
[1:47:25] Speaker 1: Best Buy, but they're now basically used as Amazon's showrooms,
[1:47:28] Speaker 1: which is unfortunate. I also used to love going a
[1:47:31] Speaker 1: forty seventh Street Photo and Circuit City, the one I
[1:47:34] Speaker 1: miss most is crazy, Eddie. I'm listening to an audio
[1:47:37] Speaker 1: book called Retail Gangster about the rise and fall of
[1:47:40] Speaker 1: the owner. Highly recommend it. Your show inspired me to
[1:47:42] Speaker 1: go back to micro Center this week. And when I
[1:47:44] Speaker 1: visit my parents in Florida, I like to visit a
[1:47:47] Speaker 1: store named Brand Smart Great Deals. Ah, Jeff, I will
[1:47:51] Speaker 1: listen to that book. John from San Diego, good afternoon.
[1:47:55] Speaker 1: These are the bomb. I have small ear canals. None
