A quiet car ride. A game of footy. A conversation no one planned to have. This week, Justin and Kylie reflect on a Mother’s Day that unexpectedly became one of their most meaningful yet — not because of gifts or grand gestures, but because of honest conversations with their adult daughters about motherhood, family, and the impact mums really have. Plus, Justin shares how a surprising new obsession with rugby league has created an unexpected bond with their teenage daughter, proving that sometimes connection happens in the most ordinary moments. This episode is a reminder that the small things families do together often become the moments kids remember forever. KEY POINTS • Why motherhood often matters more than the world gives it credit for • The powerful conversations that can happen side-by-side in the car • How adult children begin to see parenting differently with age • Why simple family traditions create lasting connection • The surprising way sport brought a father and daughter closer • How shared interests help teens open up naturally • The hidden joy of grandparenting QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “Sometimes the small things families do together become the moments kids remember forever.” RESOURCES MENTIONED • Happy Families • Boys: Building Strong Young Men From the Inside Out by Dr Justin Coulson ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS • Create space for side-by-side conversations — especially during car rides or shared activities • Don’t underestimate the impact your parenting is having, even when it feels unnoticed • Look for low-pressure ways to connect with teens through shared interests • Prioritise time together over perfect celebrations • Build small family rituals that give everyone something to look forward to See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[0:51] Speaker 1: I won't say hold you twenty one twenty one for

[1:03] Speaker 1: out of the bag. I've said it. I'm not supposed
[1:05] Speaker 1: to say that. Hey, Kylie, I know that you want
[1:08] Speaker 1: to share a story to kick off the pod, but
[1:10] Speaker 1: just a couple of housekeeping items before we get into that.
[1:13] Speaker 1: First things first, can I please just highlight one month

[1:19] Speaker 1: actually in stores, on shelves and available for purchase. You
[1:22] Speaker 1: can get it right now for pre order, and that's

[1:30] Speaker 2: So oh and just.
[1:31] Speaker 1: On that, Kylie, guess what I got an email from
[1:34] Speaker 1: the publisher just yesterday, Mary, my publisher at ABC Books,
[1:39] Speaker 1: said that the amount of interest in this book, the
[1:43] Speaker 1: amount of stores that are saying we need extras for
[1:45] Speaker 1: our shelves, the amount of pre orders that are coming
[1:48] Speaker 1: through are so significant that they've already had to go
[1:50] Speaker 1: for a reprint. And we're still in pre order stage.
[1:54] Speaker 1: The book's not even out yet. So if you haven't
[1:56] Speaker 1: gotten onto it, Boys Building Strong Young Men from the

[2:05] Speaker 1: off you can get twenty seven bucks instead of thirty
[2:07] Speaker 1: seven bucks. It will make your family happier if you're
[2:10] Speaker 1: raising tween or teen boys. One of the housekeeping things,
[2:13] Speaker 1: Kylie got an email from LeAnn O'Brien who said, Hi,
[2:17] Speaker 1: Justin and Kylie just wanted to share the Mother's Day
[2:20] Speaker 1: card my ten year old son Oliver made for me
[2:23] Speaker 1: for Mother's Day. Of my favorite things. He included my
[2:26] Speaker 1: phone with the Happy Families podcast as we often have
[2:30] Speaker 1: it playing in the car. Thanks to the show. Good
[2:33] Speaker 1: information and relatable. Looking forward to reading your book on boys,
[2:36] Speaker 1: so Leanne, Happy Mother's Day, and so good that your
[2:39] Speaker 1: son has.
[2:40] Speaker 2: He's drawn you with a picture of phone. Not sure
[2:42] Speaker 2: if that's gay.
[2:43] Speaker 3: I was about to say, I was wondering where that
[2:44] Speaker 3: was going.
[2:45] Speaker 1: But Happy Family's podcast is on the phone, so I
[2:47] Speaker 1: think it's excusable.
[2:48] Speaker 2: Will allow it.
[2:50] Speaker 1: Very very nice. I think that's everything housekeeping wise. Honey,
[2:53] Speaker 1: you wanted to talk about some stuff you wanted the top
[2:54] Speaker 1: of the pod.
[2:55] Speaker 3: So the other day, our eldest daughter called me and
[2:59] Speaker 3: she's I apologize I'd missed her call earlier in the day.
[3:03] Speaker 3: Usually when she is driving our grand baby to Kindy,
[3:07] Speaker 3: they'll give me a quick call to let me know
[3:09] Speaker 3: that they're on their way and I'd missed the call
[3:11] Speaker 3: for the morning, so I rang her a bit later
[3:13] Speaker 3: in the day and she said, I just have to
[3:15] Speaker 3: tell you the funniest story. Mum. She said, I tried
[3:17] Speaker 3: to call you and you didn't pick up, and so
[3:20] Speaker 3: I let it go to voicemail and your voicemail says,
[3:23] Speaker 3: this is the voicemail of Kylie Coulson. And Indy looks
[3:26] Speaker 3: at her and she says, Mommy, did you just try
[3:29] Speaker 3: to call Kylie Coulson? And Chanelle said yeah. She said huh,
[3:34] Speaker 3: and she said, but she's not there and we can't
[3:36] Speaker 3: talk to her, and she said, can we sing the
[3:38] Speaker 3: Kylie Coulson song? So they drove into KINDI with Kylie
[3:42] Speaker 3: Coulson squeaking from the car stereo.
[3:46] Speaker 2: And if you knew to the pod and you missed it.
[3:47] Speaker 1: A couple months ago, Kylie was joking around and told Jr.
[3:50] Speaker 1: Our brilliant producer, that she needed a theme song, and
[3:53] Speaker 1: this is what we ended up with.
[3:55] Speaker 3: She's leg busy place and my number one fan is
[4:11] Speaker 3: my two year old grand baby, Indy, who loves singing
[4:15] Speaker 3: at the top of her voice.
[4:16] Speaker 1: So I just need to throw this in she's out
[4:18] Speaker 1: to your old granddaughter, not just yours.
[4:20] Speaker 3: Loves me more than did.
[4:21] Speaker 1: You see her the other day when I walked into
[4:23] Speaker 1: the house after being away for four or five days.
[4:25] Speaker 1: I've been traveling, and I called out her name when
[4:28] Speaker 1: I walked into the house, and she just her whole
[4:31] Speaker 1: face lit up and she sprinted down the corridor into
[4:33] Speaker 1: my arms, gave me like a ten minute hug.
[4:35] Speaker 2: Didn't want to let go. Man, it was amazing.
[4:37] Speaker 3: Well I can top that. I can top that because
[4:39] Speaker 3: I'm wearing the purple nail polish on my fingernails that
[4:42] Speaker 3: she painted when I went to see her at Kindy
[4:45] Speaker 3: for Mother's Day.
[4:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not looking at paint my females.
[4:48] Speaker 3: She was not. She had no idea I was coming.
[4:51] Speaker 3: She heard Chanel's voice. But when she looked up, she
[4:53] Speaker 3: saw me, and she literally kind of slowly walked to
[4:57] Speaker 3: her mum, she was in a bit of a daze.
[4:59] Speaker 3: Grabbed it by the legs, go for a hug. Wall
[5:01] Speaker 3: She just did not take her eyes off bit at all.
[5:03] Speaker 3: And then she climbed up into my arms and I
[5:06] Speaker 3: swear she was going to choke me. She didn't want
[5:08] Speaker 3: to let go, and She kind of pulled away to
[5:10] Speaker 3: look at me and make sure I was real and
[5:11] Speaker 3: then go back into a big hug.
[5:13] Speaker 1: I know that for most people listening to the pod,
[5:15] Speaker 1: you're raising your kids right now. We are still right
[5:17] Speaker 1: our youngest is twelve. But grandparenting, oh my goodness, there
[5:21] Speaker 1: is just no joy on earth like grandparenting. Kylie, We've
[5:25] Speaker 1: got a We're five and a half minutes into the pod.
[5:27] Speaker 1: We still haven't started a lot of better tomorrow. You're
[5:30] Speaker 1: going first, let's recap Mother's Day. I know that's where
[5:32] Speaker 1: you wanted to go.
[5:33] Speaker 3: Mother's Day in our house has been an absolute non
[5:35] Speaker 3: event for twenty plus years.
[5:38] Speaker 2: Oh that's a bit harsh.
[5:39] Speaker 1: There hasn't been huge amounts of effort consistently. Every now
[5:42] Speaker 1: and again, there's been, there's been some real ethic from
[5:45] Speaker 1: time to time. You're not plussed. You're non plussed, aren't you?
[5:52] Speaker 2: Okay? Okay?
[5:54] Speaker 3: And I don't think I have very high expectations.
[5:56] Speaker 2: So I have zero expectations around Father's Day.
[6:00] Speaker 3: Not even going there or we took pas. But this
[6:05] Speaker 3: year was different, and it was different for all the
[6:08] Speaker 3: right reasons, and I was just so grateful. My mom
[6:13] Speaker 3: lives a good hour and a half down the road,
[6:15] Speaker 3: and sometimes it's kind of tricky to spend time together
[6:18] Speaker 3: and catch up because of the distance and because we're
[6:21] Speaker 3: still right in the middle of raising her own fam,
[6:24] Speaker 3: our own family.
[6:25] Speaker 2: We're running around like crazy.
[6:26] Speaker 3: You've been gone all week and you got home the
[6:28] Speaker 3: night before, and I kind of looked at it and
[6:30] Speaker 3: I said, honey, I'm gonna.
[6:32] Speaker 2: Head down to my mum for the night nights, but
[6:34] Speaker 2: I'm going away.
[6:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, And so at the last minute I asked if
[6:39] Speaker 3: any of the girls wanted to come with me, and
[6:41] Speaker 3: we ended up going down with our twenty three year old,
[6:45] Speaker 3: twenty two year old, and eighteen year old, so there
[6:48] Speaker 3: was three of them with me, and I didn't really
[6:52] Speaker 3: think too much of it. We were just we were
[6:53] Speaker 3: going down to spend time with my mom. We were
[6:55] Speaker 3: going to cook her dinner because she goes to church
[6:58] Speaker 3: very early on a Sunday morning. We did Saturday Night
[7:01] Speaker 3: Dennis celebration with her, and we just played a game,
[7:04] Speaker 3: we watched a movie. Like again, there wasn't anything, I guess,
[7:08] Speaker 3: particularly special about the event. It was just time together.
[7:12] Speaker 3: But it was actually the next day, as we were
[7:14] Speaker 3: driving home that the girls started talking to me about
[7:18] Speaker 3: the things that they really appreciated about me as a mum,
[7:22] Speaker 3: or even just their view on motherhood in general. One
[7:26] Speaker 3: of the girls just acknowledged that from her point of view,
[7:28] Speaker 3: on her perspective as she kind of looks at people
[7:31] Speaker 3: around her, and I guess what the world kind of
[7:36] Speaker 3: tells us about mothers. It doesn't paint a particularly glorious
[7:41] Speaker 3: picture of motherhood in general, and it definitely feels like
[7:47] Speaker 3: it's at the bottom of the list of aspiring things
[7:49] Speaker 3: to do with your life as a woman. And we
[7:52] Speaker 3: sat in our church meeting and there was maybe six
[7:56] Speaker 3: or seven young boys who were from the age of
[7:59] Speaker 3: twelve to seventeen who shared their feelings about their mums.
[8:03] Speaker 3: And it was really heart rendering to hear boys specifically
[8:08] Speaker 3: talk so openly about their admiration and love that they
[8:11] Speaker 3: had for their mums. And as we came away from that,
[8:14] Speaker 3: she continued and she just said, it's hard to sit
[8:16] Speaker 3: in a room like that and hear the stories that
[8:18] Speaker 3: these boys shared and the feelings that they had towards
[8:21] Speaker 3: their mums and not recognize the immense impact that women
[8:25] Speaker 3: and mums have on their children's lives. And as I
[8:31] Speaker 3: reflected on what motherhood means to me as an individual.
[8:35] Speaker 3: I can't think of any higher cause that I could
[8:40] Speaker 3: put my energy and time into than that of being
[8:44] Speaker 3: a mum to my children. And it was just it
[8:47] Speaker 3: was just beautiful. It was beautiful to sit in the
[8:49] Speaker 3: car and to be able to have those conversations, and
[8:52] Speaker 3: they wanted to ask lots of different things about my
[8:54] Speaker 3: mothering experience, of them personally and of their siblings, and
[8:58] Speaker 3: we were just able to share little doats and things
[9:00] Speaker 3: that they remembered from their childhood and things that I
[9:03] Speaker 3: remembered they might have wanted to know how they were.
[9:05] Speaker 3: Can see all of those kinds of when where you
[9:09] Speaker 3: know there was a few questions around that you can
[9:13] Speaker 3: pick the child who might have asked that question.
[9:15] Speaker 1: We wouldn't be able to answer those questions and I
[9:17] Speaker 1: wouldn't have a globe.
[9:18] Speaker 2: I'm not going to go and do any more detail.
[9:19] Speaker 3: But it was just delightful and so it had nothing
[9:25] Speaker 3: to do with what was wrapped up in a bow
[9:27] Speaker 3: and everything to do with just time and space to
[9:32] Speaker 3: reflect and just relish time together and I loved every
[9:36] Speaker 3: minute of it.
[9:37] Speaker 1: The take home message motherhood is impactful. It has tremendous value.
[9:41] Speaker 1: Anything else. Time with the kids, spending time in the
[9:44] Speaker 1: car side by side, having conversations matters.
[9:47] Speaker 3: Yeah. And if Mother's Day doesn't look great to you yet,
[9:49] Speaker 3: just wait a few years. It will get better.
[9:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, and take the kids for a sleepover at your
[9:54] Speaker 1: mum's house for Mother's Day next year. Like that actually
[9:56] Speaker 1: was a real treat for you and the girls, but
[9:59] Speaker 1: also for your mum. That was a really cool thing.
[10:01] Speaker 3: Yeah. When we were sitting down at the dinner table
[10:03] Speaker 3: just talking about the things we were grateful for that night,
[10:06] Speaker 3: my mom acknowledged that since I had wrung her on
[10:08] Speaker 3: the Tuesday, so Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday night,
[10:12] Speaker 3: and we came on Saturday.
[10:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, so five nights.
[10:15] Speaker 3: She'd hardly slept. She was so excited to have us there.
[10:20] Speaker 2: That is so sweet. I mean, that is I'm sorry
[10:23] Speaker 2: for my dad. So gorgeous.
[10:26] Speaker 1: All right, after the break, a brand new compulsion, a
[10:30] Speaker 1: brand new addiction, a brand new family activity that is
[10:33] Speaker 1: joining parents and children in our home in ways that
[10:37] Speaker 1: we never could have possibly imagined.
[10:40] Speaker 2: I'm calling it a win for us and.
[10:42] Speaker 1: Also a win for Manly.
[10:45] Speaker 2: That's next. We're back. This is the Happy Family Podcast.
[10:54] Speaker 1: You took me by surprise when you shouted out for Manly,
[10:58] Speaker 1: and you've kind of given it to the game away
[10:59] Speaker 1: a little for my older better tomorrow. It's this simple.
[11:10] Speaker 1: You went away on Saturday night to your mum's for
[11:13] Speaker 1: Mother's Day. I was left at home with our two
[11:16] Speaker 1: youngest kids, our sixteen year old and our twelve year old.
[11:19] Speaker 2: So I'm going to name drop.
[11:21] Speaker 1: Its necessary part of the story, so please forgive the
[11:24] Speaker 1: I don't know the vanity associated with this. My sister's husband,
[11:27] Speaker 1: our brother in law, has recently been appointed as the
[11:32] Speaker 1: brand new coach of a very very famous NRL rugby
[11:37] Speaker 1: League team in Sydney, the Manly Seagles.
[11:40] Speaker 2: Our brother in law is Kieren Foran.
[11:42] Speaker 4: Kieran is well known to mainly faithful. He played almost
[11:46] Speaker 4: two hundred games for the club was recently appointed a
[11:49] Speaker 4: life member, so clearly one of the most respected players
[11:54] Speaker 4: in the game.
[11:55] Speaker 1: For those of you who don't follow rugby league, that
[11:57] Speaker 1: will mean nothing to you, but he just retired from
[11:59] Speaker 1: rugby league last year.
[12:00] Speaker 2: He's mean anything to us here. I haven't I haven't
[12:03] Speaker 2: watched rug soo about twenty years ago.
[12:05] Speaker 1: When I started cycling, I realized that I couldn't stay
[12:07] Speaker 1: up and watch Friday night football and then still get
[12:09] Speaker 1: up on a Saturday morning and have a good bike ride.
[12:12] Speaker 1: I gave up football. I stopped watching it. So maybe
[12:15] Speaker 1: some more background here. My family is a rugby league family.
[12:19] Speaker 1: From the time I was born, we would spend every
[12:22] Speaker 1: when there was a game on the TV. Dad and
[12:24] Speaker 1: I would sit and watch it. We'd analyze the tackles
[12:27] Speaker 1: and the scrums and the forward passes and.
[12:30] Speaker 2: You name it.
[12:31] Speaker 1: We lived and breathed rugby league. Dad loved the Western
[12:33] Speaker 1: Subbos Magpies. I still remember the times when he took
[12:36] Speaker 1: me to the football and we got to watch the
[12:38] Speaker 1: games live. But basically we watched every game possible.
[12:41] Speaker 3: And your nan and your arch and everybody like everybody's
[12:45] Speaker 3: bill league fanatics.
[12:47] Speaker 1: And so when I stopped watching rugby league in the
[12:49] Speaker 1: early two thousands because I'd started cycling, my family essentially
[12:53] Speaker 1: they all but disowned me.
[12:54] Speaker 2: He was like, well, what are we going to talk about?
[12:55] Speaker 3: I was going to say, there wasn't much to talk
[12:57] Speaker 3: about after that was.
[12:59] Speaker 2: You watch the footing.
[13:00] Speaker 1: I've started cycling and they don't want to talk about cycling.
[13:02] Speaker 1: And I didn't know anything about footy anymore. So, long
[13:05] Speaker 1: story short, A few years ago, a dozen years ago, whatever,
[13:09] Speaker 1: it was, my sister meets and Mary's Kieran. He's playing football.
[13:15] Speaker 1: I'm still not that interested in it. I didn't even
[13:16] Speaker 1: know that he was a football player and I met him.
[13:18] Speaker 1: It was quite embarrassing, quite honestly. Fast forward, so last
[13:22] Speaker 1: year he retires. This year he comes in as the
[13:24] Speaker 1: interim coach for the Sea Eagles and within three weeks,
[13:29] Speaker 1: sadly for the actual coach, they had three losses in
[13:31] Speaker 1: a row and he got given the boot. And completely unexpectedly,
[13:36] Speaker 1: like completely shocked, Kieran gets the call, will you step
[13:39] Speaker 1: up as the interim coach?
[13:41] Speaker 2: And he says yes.
[13:42] Speaker 1: So all of a sudden, for whatever reason, we've started
[13:45] Speaker 1: watching Manly play every week when the foot is on,
[13:49] Speaker 1: and I'm on tenderhooks, like my heart is in my mouth.
[13:52] Speaker 1: I'm so nervous. The anxiety is through the roof every
[13:56] Speaker 1: time Manly takes the field, because it was just exhausting.
[14:00] Speaker 1: It's terrifying because Kieran's coaching and it feels like everything's
[14:03] Speaker 1: riding on Kieran the coach. And as a result of
[14:05] Speaker 1: me watching the footy. Now, Lily, our sixteen year old,
[14:09] Speaker 1: has started watching the footy with me. She's always kind
[14:11] Speaker 1: of liked the footy anyway. She's always felt like a
[14:13] Speaker 1: bit of a misfit because no one else wanted to
[14:14] Speaker 1: watch the football. So while you were away at your mum's,
[14:17] Speaker 1: I signed into whatever the app is so that I
[14:21] Speaker 1: could watch the football and Lily came in side on
[14:23] Speaker 1: the couch next to me, and as a manly player
[14:28] Speaker 1: I don't know any of their names, but as a
[14:29] Speaker 1: manly player was sprinting down the field being chased by
[14:32] Speaker 1: another one so that he could score a try.
[14:33] Speaker 2: I jumped out of the couch and off the couch
[14:35] Speaker 2: and I'm saying, go go go. So I'm telling, like
[14:38] Speaker 2: my dad, go son, go go go. You good thing.
[14:41] Speaker 1: And of course he scores the try and I'm going yes,
[14:43] Speaker 1: And then I'm just thinking how they going to win
[14:46] Speaker 1: and what's going to happen, and I'm yelling at the
[14:47] Speaker 1: ref for getting things wrong. And I've become completely addicted
[14:50] Speaker 1: to it, and so has Lily. And it's become this
[14:53] Speaker 1: thing where we just we're bonding over the footy again,
[14:56] Speaker 1: and it's taken me back to those memories that I
[14:59] Speaker 1: have when I was a kid, and I spent that
[15:01] Speaker 1: time with my dad playing those games. And so my
[15:04] Speaker 1: older Better Tomorrow is sport and watching the TV. I
[15:09] Speaker 1: know that I'm kind of big on not watching screens
[15:11] Speaker 1: and things, but sometimes it can just be a great
[15:13] Speaker 1: way to bond and I'm loving it.
