[0:16] Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to my favorite murder. That's Georgia hartste
[0:20] Speaker 1: that's Karen kil Kara.
[0:22] Speaker 2: Just a just a just your microphone. Here we are
[0:24] Speaker 2: with our microphone.
[0:26] Speaker 3: Microphones are a big part of podcasting, ladies and gentlemen,
[0:29] Speaker 3: kind of the only part really.
[0:31] Speaker 2: Yeah, they do more than we do.
[0:32] Speaker 1: Yeah. Once you have a microphone, you're basically a professional
[0:35] Speaker 1: podcast You never give it up.
[0:37] Speaker 2: You never shut the fuck up. You never can shut
[0:39] Speaker 2: it down.
[0:40] Speaker 3: Do you remember when the way I used to shake
[0:42] Speaker 3: the old microphone stang?
[0:44] Speaker 2: Do you remember when we were amateur podcasters.
[0:46] Speaker 3: Do you remember when you were the sound guy? Stephen
[0:49] Speaker 3: was just a gleam.
[0:49] Speaker 2: In our eye? I do.
[0:51] Speaker 1: So this funny thing happened to me, This funny thing happened. Okay,
[0:54] Speaker 1: guys reading this, you're doing bits bits. Yes, I'm listening
[0:57] Speaker 1: to a book. Or I listened to a book that
[0:59] Speaker 1: I totally it was great. It's a one of the
[1:02] Speaker 1: drinking alcoholics memoirs that I loved so much, called Drinking
[1:06] Speaker 1: a Love Story by Caroline Knapp. It's from the nineties,
[1:10] Speaker 1: so I thought it'd be dated. No, it's life changing.
[1:12] Speaker 3: Is this the one where there's a scene where she
[1:14] Speaker 3: jumps on her boyfriend's back like that, I don't, and
[1:17] Speaker 3: they crash. She has her friend's children, and she crashes
[1:20] Speaker 3: like that, Oh, her friend's children.
[1:22] Speaker 2: That's right.
[1:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so good. It's changed a lot of things.
[1:25] Speaker 1: I have not every drink since I listen.
[1:26] Speaker 2: Are you serious? Yes, it's been eight days.
[1:30] Speaker 1: But the weird thing about the audio book is that
[1:34] Speaker 1: it's read by the same woman who read I'll Be
[1:36] Speaker 1: Gone in the Dark. No, her name's Gabra Zachman. She's
[1:40] Speaker 1: like a famous audiobook narrator. But I'm listening to this
[1:44] Speaker 1: like sobriety book, and I'm expecting someone to break into
[1:48] Speaker 1: the house in the middle of the night and murder everyone.
[1:51] Speaker 3: It's really you listen to I'll Be Gone in the
[1:53] Speaker 3: Dark so many times, so many.
[1:54] Speaker 1: Times, it's just really like jarring and also like I've
[1:58] Speaker 1: ruined everything for myself for crime essentially.
[2:01] Speaker 3: I mean, it is what we do. Yeah, it's how
[2:03] Speaker 3: it is. Yeah, I think that's so funny. That's like
[2:06] Speaker 3: I wonder if that person probably has the most insane
[2:08] Speaker 3: range of books, and it's like, oh, I can do
[2:10] Speaker 3: more than just these two things. But I remember that
[2:14] Speaker 3: there was a couple of those at the time very groundbreaking. Yeah,
[2:18] Speaker 3: kind of autobiography tell alls about here's how I got
[2:23] Speaker 3: through this horrible thing. There was another one about eating disorders.
[2:26] Speaker 3: It's so I think no one recommends it anymore because
[2:28] Speaker 3: it's so triggering, right, it's basically someone giving you training manual.
[2:32] Speaker 1: Right. Well, she has a lot of that in there.
[2:34] Speaker 1: I mean, it's just it's a woman. It doesn't seem
[2:36] Speaker 1: like in the nineties that was discussed a lot. You
[2:38] Speaker 1: have this idea of what an alcoholic is, and it's
[2:40] Speaker 1: not a professional, smart woman from a you know, good background, right,
[2:45] Speaker 1: and it just kind of shows that it could be anyone.
[2:47] Speaker 3: Yeah, and that it builds and builds, sure does, grows
[2:50] Speaker 3: and grows.
[2:51] Speaker 1: And the thought process behind it all is so familiar.
[2:53] Speaker 1: I was almost laughing at myself about how obvious it is.
[2:57] Speaker 2: But yeah, you know this is the way.
[3:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, alcohol is an addictive substance. Yeah, then people get
[3:04] Speaker 1: addicted to it.
[3:05] Speaker 3: Yeah, because for a little while you get the slippy
[3:08] Speaker 3: slide out of reality. Nice, it's real nice. It reminds
[3:11] Speaker 3: me of this morning. I could not get out of
[3:13] Speaker 3: the shower because it's we're having a very strangely cold
[3:17] Speaker 3: summer here in La and today, well, I haven't been
[3:19] Speaker 3: outside Georgia.
[3:20] Speaker 2: I was like, it's freezing today. Did you spill? I've
[3:22] Speaker 2: spilled there?
[3:28] Speaker 3: Oh yes, Oh my god.
[3:29] Speaker 2: Next Falling Apart fan cult We've got so what's going away?
[3:36] Speaker 3: Go what?
[3:37] Speaker 2: I'll look at me?
[3:39] Speaker 4: What?
[3:40] Speaker 2: I'm still drunk? Listen. Eight days is not that long. No.
[3:44] Speaker 3: I think the felt tablecloth will be fine.
[3:47] Speaker 2: It'll be fine. Us leave that in please all of that.
[3:51] Speaker 3: Netflix needs to know a nice long four minute hold.
[3:58] Speaker 2: Shower.
[3:58] Speaker 3: I can't get out of the show sometimes because it's
[4:02] Speaker 3: so warm and I don't want to be cold. I
[4:04] Speaker 3: just keep standing there forever.
[4:07] Speaker 2: Should write a memoir about not being able to get
[4:09] Speaker 2: out of the show.
[4:10] Speaker 3: And then I'm babysitting my friend's kids, but I won't
[4:13] Speaker 3: get out of the show.
[4:15] Speaker 2: Just keep standing back. Should we just get into it? Yeah,
[4:19] Speaker 2: let's do it right. We don't have to fill. I
[4:22] Speaker 2: gave a book wreck.
[4:23] Speaker 3: Fucking she gave a book wreck. She blew her own
[4:25] Speaker 3: dress open.

[6:27] Speaker 3: George is now turning into podcast personality.
[6:31] Speaker 2: Hello, Hello, it's me podcaster Georgia. Okay, okay, stop saying okay, okay, okay,
[6:47] Speaker 2: So this isn't Can I get a rose? Can I
[6:53] Speaker 2: get a bartini?
[6:55] Speaker 1: Cold as ice? I want to be able to skate
[6:58] Speaker 1: on top of it. That's how we order or cold martini.
[7:01] Speaker 2: Did you know that?
[7:01] Speaker 1: Oh?
[7:01] Speaker 2: Is that right?
[7:02] Speaker 1: I want to skate? I meaning it's so icy on
[7:04] Speaker 1: top I could fuck an ice skating.
[7:06] Speaker 3: And the bartender's like, you got it and rolls their
[7:08] Speaker 3: eyes so hard they fall backwards behind the bar.
[7:13] Speaker 1: I would never say that, by the way, I'll say
[7:15] Speaker 1: martini if it's warm, I won't send it back up right,
[7:18] Speaker 1: I just don't.
[7:18] Speaker 3: I may could skate, but if you don't, I'll smile anyway,
[7:21] Speaker 3: because I don't actually know.
[7:22] Speaker 2: How you so much. You don't even understand.
[7:26] Speaker 3: As long as your mustache is curly, I'll do what
[7:28] Speaker 3: you say.
[7:29] Speaker 2: I'll tip you so much.
[7:30] Speaker 1: Recently, you tip so much that the owners think that
[7:33] Speaker 1: the bartender's giving you free drinks.
[7:35] Speaker 2: So if you're gonna.
[7:36] Speaker 1: Tip a lot, tip in cash, yes, because I'll fucking
[7:39] Speaker 1: blow out the tip. Sometimes if the person's like cool
[7:42] Speaker 1: and nice or it's like my neighborhood bar, right, and
[7:44] Speaker 1: Vince was like, that's that actually fucks them over because
[7:46] Speaker 1: the owner is like, why did they tip you this much?
[7:49] Speaker 1: You must be giving away alcohol, and then they get
[7:51] Speaker 1: in trouble.
[7:52] Speaker 3: God, I've never thought of that hadn't either.
[7:54] Speaker 2: Well, but not at a.
[7:55] Speaker 3: Like a busy place, not like at a major restaurants.
[7:59] Speaker 2: Like at a bar.
[7:59] Speaker 1: If they see a tab that was like a thirty
[8:01] Speaker 1: six dollars tab and you tip them fifty dollars on it,
[8:04] Speaker 1: they're going to be like, why did they tip you
[8:06] Speaker 1: fifty dollars on it?
[8:07] Speaker 2: How many drinks did they actually get? Do you have it?
[8:10] Speaker 3: That's pretty Forensica County when people are just drunk and
[8:13] Speaker 3: giving away money because they love the person that gave
[8:16] Speaker 3: them the drinks, right, is it.
[8:17] Speaker 2: The drunk rich person or are you giving away drinks?
[8:20] Speaker 3: It was just someone that's straight up bad at math.
[8:22] Speaker 2: I just want us to get the fuck out of it.
[8:24] Speaker 3: Do you know what I did the other night? I
[8:26] Speaker 3: thought I would be cute and try to make the
[8:28] Speaker 3: whole thing add up to an even number. Oh yeah,
[8:31] Speaker 3: and fuck the waiter over by about thirteen dollars.
[8:34] Speaker 2: Oh no, And I just kept thinking about it.
[8:36] Speaker 3: I ended we went there second night, so it was
[8:38] Speaker 3: not a big deal, but I was just like thinking
[8:40] Speaker 3: about it, like.
[8:41] Speaker 2: Why was that the priority? Yeah, a round number for
[8:44] Speaker 2: who feels good kind of you and not for the waiter.
[8:48] Speaker 3: Yeah, but still it doesn't feel good to me because
[8:50] Speaker 3: I know I didn't get there, so I'm always like,
[8:52] Speaker 3: I think I minused it by ten dollars.
[8:56] Speaker 2: I still can't carry the one my grandma used.
[8:59] Speaker 1: To carry this cart around that was like tipping and
[9:01] Speaker 1: the exact numbers for what you wanted to tip.
[9:04] Speaker 2: So why don't we have those anymore?
[9:05] Speaker 1: We're called calculators in your phone, but I can't figure that.
[9:08] Speaker 3: Out right because you'd have to kind of know. I
[9:10] Speaker 3: want a little card that says if you want to
[9:12] Speaker 3: go eighteen twenty twenty two regular big.
[9:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, we'll figure this out later someday, we
[9:18] Speaker 2: will figure this out. In the meantime, True crime. Let's
[9:21] Speaker 2: do a true crime podcast.
[9:22] Speaker 1: We're going to Australia. This is an infamous Australian case
[9:26] Speaker 1: that has technically been solved in that the alleged killer
[9:29] Speaker 1: was sentenced, but to many Australians it remains a mystery,
[9:33] Speaker 1: both because they think the wrong man was sentenced and
[9:37] Speaker 1: also because the victim's body has never been found, and
[9:39] Speaker 1: some people even question if there is a body to
[9:43] Speaker 1: be found. There's a lot of debate over this. We're
[9:45] Speaker 1: going to figure it out today, great and solve this one.
[9:48] Speaker 1: Let's do an on air solve for once.
[9:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, to those who believe justice was served.
[9:51] Speaker 1: It's also a survival story, which in which a young
[9:54] Speaker 1: woman escaped her captor and lived to testify against him.
[9:57] Speaker 2: We love those stories.
[9:58] Speaker 1: Yeah, And to everyone who does, she's a liar who
[10:01] Speaker 1: fabricated the entire story and is responsible for her boyfriend's disappearance.
[10:05] Speaker 1: This is the story of the murder of Peter Falconio
[10:08] Speaker 1: and the survival story of Joanne Lee's.
[10:11] Speaker 3: So you're about to tell the survival story, but we
[10:13] Speaker 3: don't know how to interpret it.
[10:16] Speaker 2: We know, okay, she's telling the truth. We do know that.
[10:20] Speaker 1: We do you and I and a lot of people.
[10:23] Speaker 1: But there's a lot of questions behind it. And that's
[10:26] Speaker 1: partly because of the way the investigation was done and
[10:30] Speaker 1: the way the trial and the evidence went that people
[10:33] Speaker 1: question a lot of things.
[10:34] Speaker 2: And also she's a woman who.
[10:35] Speaker 1: Survived, and so people just immediately assume lots of stuff.
[10:39] Speaker 2: So, okay, we'll get into it, and.
[10:42] Speaker 1: We'll get lots of hate mail about it. The main
[10:44] Speaker 1: sources from the story are reporting from The Guardian and
[10:46] Speaker 1: the Sydney Morning Herald, and also there's a documentary called
[10:49] Speaker 1: Murder in the Outback which I watched. The rest of
[10:51] Speaker 1: the sources can be found in the show notes. The
[10:53] Speaker 1: documentary clearly thinks that the wrong person was put in prison,
[10:57] Speaker 1: so i'm you know, grain.
[10:58] Speaker 2: Results, there's a bias. Yeah, okay.
[11:00] Speaker 1: So it's late two thousand. Peter Falconio and Joanne Lee's
[11:04] Speaker 1: they're twenty and twenty seven years old. They are a
[11:06] Speaker 1: couple from England. They've been together about five years. If
[11:09] Speaker 1: you want a picture who I'm talking about. She could
[11:12] Speaker 1: be played by Selma Blair and he could be played
[11:14] Speaker 1: by Sean Gunn, James Gunn's little brother from Guardians of
[11:18] Speaker 1: the Galaxy.
[11:19] Speaker 2: Here's a photo of actually the people. Oh okay, she's
[11:22] Speaker 2: really pretty.
[11:23] Speaker 1: She's got like a Selma Blair meets Elizabeth Taylor but
[11:26] Speaker 1: British kind of a thing going yeah. And he's really
[11:28] Speaker 1: cute and has a very sweet face and smile.
[11:31] Speaker 3: She looks like the sister from Peep Show, which is
[11:33] Speaker 3: a deep cut. Oh yeah, very similar to that actress.
[11:36] Speaker 2: Totally.
[11:37] Speaker 1: So they met at a nightclub. Peter was a student
[11:40] Speaker 1: at the University of Brighton and they moved in together
[11:43] Speaker 1: and now they are living their twenty something dream.
[11:46] Speaker 2: They're taking a year.
[11:46] Speaker 1: Off to travel around the world, just kind of beat
[11:49] Speaker 1: like backpackers and explorers. They set out in November. They
[11:53] Speaker 1: start in Asia and they travel to Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia,
[11:59] Speaker 1: like something most of us would maybe do two of
[12:01] Speaker 1: those in our lifetime, right, you know. In January of
[12:04] Speaker 1: two thousand and one, they arrive in Australia and they
[12:06] Speaker 1: both get what's called a working holiday visa, meaning they're
[12:09] Speaker 1: allowed to get jobs to fund the rest of their
[12:11] Speaker 1: travels in Australia. So Peter and Joanne's parents are nervous
[12:15] Speaker 1: about the Australia leg of the trip because there's recently
[12:19] Speaker 1: been three highly publicized, highly violent incidents, two of which
[12:24] Speaker 1: targeted backpackers. Those are the backpacker murders, which happened in
[12:28] Speaker 1: the late eighties and early nineties, and you covered at
[12:31] Speaker 1: a live show in Australia. It's episode eighty eight, and
[12:34] Speaker 1: it's just a fucking incredible story that I had never
[12:37] Speaker 1: I've in malat right, I mean, the survivor Paula, Yeah, right.
[12:42] Speaker 1: And then there's also a horrible fire at a hostel
[12:44] Speaker 1: in June of two thousand, which had been started on
[12:47] Speaker 1: purpose and killed fifteen people. So understandably, you know, these
[12:51] Speaker 1: twenty somethings are in Australia. Their parents are worried, but
[12:54] Speaker 1: for many months of the Australia leg, everything goes well.
[12:56] Speaker 1: They stay in Sydney, Joane gets a job in a
[12:58] Speaker 1: bookstore and Peter works for a company that installs furniture
[13:01] Speaker 1: and offices. They're just kind of like saving up to
[13:04] Speaker 1: go on their next leg of their beautiful trip.
[13:06] Speaker 2: I would love to get a job in Sydney and.
[13:10] Speaker 3: Just live there for a little while at a bookstore
[13:12] Speaker 3: and just like kind of walk down by the harbor
[13:15] Speaker 3: when you're done. Also, I wonder there's something about knowing
[13:17] Speaker 3: your job isn't permanent, Like this is not the rest
[13:19] Speaker 3: of your fucking life. This is like a stop in
[13:21] Speaker 3: between adventures.
[13:23] Speaker 2: Yes it's the.
[13:24] Speaker 1: Twenties, man, you gotta do it right. This is your
[13:26] Speaker 1: sign right now, everyone listening.
[13:27] Speaker 2: Just try stuff.
[13:29] Speaker 3: We're the people that are like, don't leave the house
[13:33] Speaker 3: self indoors and they were like, but you know what,
[13:35] Speaker 3: also go to Australia.
[13:37] Speaker 1: So they are saving money for their next leg of
[13:40] Speaker 1: the trip, which is going to be a huge road
[13:41] Speaker 1: trip across Australia, and as we know from our tour there,
[13:46] Speaker 1: there's like the big cities Sydney and Melbourne and Brisbane,
[13:49] Speaker 1: and then there's nothing flyover like bush land and small
[13:55] Speaker 1: towns and then Perth and so there's a lot in
[13:58] Speaker 1: between there that's just kind of long, quiet roads.
[14:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, the outback. They call it the.
[14:06] Speaker 1: Jesus thank you for doing my research for me. So
[14:11] Speaker 1: they set off for that trip on June twenty fifth,
[14:13] Speaker 1: two thousand and one, in an orange camper van.
[14:15] Speaker 2: It's like a VW and.
[14:17] Speaker 1: They plan to sleep in the van in the back
[14:19] Speaker 1: or like go camping or sleep by the side of
[14:21] Speaker 1: the road.
[14:23] Speaker 2: I was like, you either look thrilled or like miserable.
[14:26] Speaker 3: I mean, I've done it, and I've done it in
[14:27] Speaker 3: a VW van.
[14:29] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that was my old life Georgia. That was
[14:31] Speaker 2: before I knew you.
[14:32] Speaker 3: It is the kind of thing where you get to
[14:34] Speaker 3: see amazing stuff up close, you get to camp in nature,
[14:38] Speaker 3: which was like, you know, doing it like say in
[14:40] Speaker 3: the California Redwoods. Yeah, can't recommend it enough. We were
[14:43] Speaker 3: just surrounded. But for somebody like me who's a real
[14:47] Speaker 3: lover of nice hotels.
[14:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, go to hell. Amenities got to have them.
[14:51] Speaker 1: You live service totally just eating indoor shower, hot hot shower,
[14:56] Speaker 1: you can just stand around in. So first they go southwest,
[15:00] Speaker 1: they stop in Canberra and in Melbourne, and then they
[15:03] Speaker 1: start their trip by heading north. By July eleventh, they
[15:06] Speaker 1: arrive in a place called Alice Springs, which is a
[15:09] Speaker 1: small city in Northern Territory. So there's all the different territories.
[15:13] Speaker 1: This is Northern Territory. It's kind of basically in the
[15:16] Speaker 1: center of Australia and Alice Springs is the biggest outpost
[15:20] Speaker 1: for many many miles of barren outback.
[15:22] Speaker 2: There's the word outback.
[15:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, I looked it up and I saw it describe
[15:27] Speaker 1: many different ways online, this Northern Territory and this long
[15:31] Speaker 1: stretch of the outback, and it seems like it's a
[15:34] Speaker 1: town that's struggling to be touristy while dealing with lots
[15:38] Speaker 1: of crime. And there's a lot of lingering racism against
[15:41] Speaker 1: the Aboriginal population. I got this quote on Reddit. The
[15:44] Speaker 1: population is a real mixed bag from lefty arts degree
[15:47] Speaker 1: kind of people working in government agencies to classic redneck
[15:50] Speaker 1: outback bogan. And I don't know what bogan means, and
[15:53] Speaker 1: then someone else wrote it's a place criminals go to hide.
[15:57] Speaker 1: So they stay in Alice Springs for a few days,
[16:00] Speaker 1: and it's kind of like the last stop between civilizations.
[16:04] Speaker 1: And there's like little towns along the way, but not
[16:06] Speaker 1: much else. So on the evening of July fourteenth, Peter
[16:09] Speaker 1: and Joanne leave Alice Springs, heading north towards the outback.
[16:13] Speaker 1: It's also called the Red Center picture Las Vegas, that
[16:16] Speaker 1: long stretch from La to Las Vegas of nothing but desert.
[16:19] Speaker 1: But the desert is all red, like this dusty, rusty
[16:22] Speaker 1: looking red color.
[16:23] Speaker 2: It's really beautiful.
[16:24] Speaker 1: It's very barren kind of Vegas, Utah Joshua tree open
[16:30] Speaker 1: land with different kinds.
[16:31] Speaker 2: Of bush, the bush, it's bush country. It's bush country.
[16:35] Speaker 1: So at around six point thirty that evening, they stop
[16:37] Speaker 1: at a rest stop where they share what the papers
[16:39] Speaker 1: will later refer to as a joint of cannabis, and
[16:43] Speaker 1: the press will make a big deal about this later,
[16:46] Speaker 1: and then they continue on their way, with Peter driving.
[16:49] Speaker 3: We he just goes slightly off the road and comes
[16:51] Speaker 3: back right. It ever so slightly off the road right.
[16:54] Speaker 2: So it's about seven thirty now, it's pitch black. There's
[16:56] Speaker 2: no moon.
[16:57] Speaker 1: I cannot even stress how dark it is out in
[17:00] Speaker 1: the bush.
[17:01] Speaker 3: Can I just say this real quick? And it just
[17:03] Speaker 3: came to me. Don't get high before you go drive
[17:06] Speaker 3: through tens of or hundreds of miles of darkened.
[17:10] Speaker 1: That's you're unfamiliar with completely. Let's remember they're from England.
[17:15] Speaker 1: Small town in England. Like one of the people that
[17:17] Speaker 1: they met in Alice Springs was like, don't go at night.
[17:19] Speaker 2: There's nothing. They don't have reason to do it.
[17:21] Speaker 1: Yeah, right, it's like not safe and it's scary. So
[17:25] Speaker 1: they're in a remote area. They're on their way to
[17:27] Speaker 1: a settlement called Barrow Creek. Peter and Joanne notice a
[17:31] Speaker 1: pickup truck with a canopy pulling beside the van and
[17:34] Speaker 1: keeping pace with them. It's one of those something's wrong
[17:37] Speaker 1: with your car pullover situations that we know all too well,
[17:41] Speaker 1: and they had been having issues with the car, so
[17:44] Speaker 1: they assume that's what he's pointing to, and she's like,
[17:47] Speaker 1: don't pull over.
[17:48] Speaker 2: I don't trust this guy.
[17:49] Speaker 1: There's not traffic on this road at all, there's nobody around,
[17:52] Speaker 1: but he pulls over anyways. So at this point Joan
[17:55] Speaker 1: hasn't really gotten a great look at the guy, but
[17:56] Speaker 1: she sees that he's wearing a baseball.
[17:58] Speaker 2: Cap, has a like a big mustache.
[18:01] Speaker 1: And Peter walks around to the back of the car
[18:03] Speaker 1: to talk with this guy and they talk about sparks
[18:07] Speaker 1: coming out of the exhaust pipe.
[18:08] Speaker 2: Baby Peter comes.
[18:09] Speaker 1: Back around and tells Joanne to sit in the driver's
[18:11] Speaker 1: seat and rev the engine so they can see what's
[18:13] Speaker 1: wrong with the car. She does that, she hears a
[18:15] Speaker 1: loud bang, which at first she believes is the car backfiring,
[18:19] Speaker 1: but then the man who had stopped them comes to
[18:21] Speaker 1: the driver's side door where she is and points a
[18:24] Speaker 1: silver handgun at Joanne and tells her to get out
[18:27] Speaker 1: of the car. So she immediately realizes that the shot
[18:31] Speaker 1: she heard was probably Peter getting shot. The man ties
[18:34] Speaker 1: her wrists together with this like weird contraption and gets
[18:38] Speaker 1: her into the passenger seat of his truck. And it's
[18:40] Speaker 1: a green Toyota little truck with a canopy over the bed.
[18:43] Speaker 1: And it's so specific. I'm gonna show you a photo.
[18:45] Speaker 1: It's normal to Australia, but like it almost looks like
[18:48] Speaker 1: a little army van.
[18:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, with like a canvas top on the back.
[18:52] Speaker 3: Yep, and the wheels are lifted a little bit so you.
[18:54] Speaker 2: Can go over rocks. Yeah, you know what I mean.
[18:56] Speaker 2: It's made for the out back. Yeah.
[18:58] Speaker 1: So this all comes from her after the fact, one
[19:02] Speaker 1: of the most terrifying traumatic moments of her life, that
[19:06] Speaker 1: she explains what happened, and she's not totally clear, she
[19:09] Speaker 1: doesn't remember a lot of it, but basically, she says
[19:12] Speaker 1: she notices a stocky dog writing with him, and then
[19:15] Speaker 1: the man draws are down tries to tie her ankles
[19:17] Speaker 1: as well. She fights back and then he forces her
[19:20] Speaker 1: into the bed of that track, but then he.
[19:23] Speaker 2: Leaves she's tied up.
[19:24] Speaker 1: He leaves to do something, presumably hide Peter's body, because
[19:28] Speaker 1: if someone had been driving by, they would have seen that.
[19:31] Speaker 2: And at that moment she just has this.
[19:34] Speaker 1: She says, quote a strange calmness came over me, almost
[19:37] Speaker 1: like an acceptance, like this is it. I'm going to die.
[19:40] Speaker 1: But then out of sheer terror, I realized that I
[19:43] Speaker 1: wasn't just going to die. He was going to rape me.
[19:45] Speaker 1: And I believe that was the turning point and that's
[19:47] Speaker 1: what saved me, because I just all of a sudden
[19:50] Speaker 1: from somewhere found some strength end quote. She pops up
[19:55] Speaker 1: and she's able to get her ankles free, and she
[19:58] Speaker 1: runs into the book like runs into the outback and
[20:02] Speaker 1: it's pitch black out there. She hides in a bush.
[20:05] Speaker 1: The attacker comes after her, scans the area with a flashlight.
[20:09] Speaker 1: It's completely black, and somehow the flashlight never quite lands
[20:12] Speaker 1: on her. She's laying flat.
[20:14] Speaker 2: There's nowhere to hide. I know.
[20:15] Speaker 3: Some were like, I mean, like just the things I'm
[20:17] Speaker 3: picturing of the TV shows I've seen that take place,
[20:20] Speaker 3: places like that where just like what do you get
[20:22] Speaker 3: down by a plant on the ground, And.
[20:24] Speaker 2: Oh, that's exactly so stressful. I know.
[20:27] Speaker 1: He eventually gives up and goes back to the road.
[20:29] Speaker 1: We're assuming that he wanted to get rid of Peter's
[20:32] Speaker 1: body in case someone drove by.
[20:33] Speaker 2: And he leaves and.
[20:35] Speaker 1: Joanne hides in that bush for five hours until one am,
[20:39] Speaker 1: when she feels safe enough to get out. She returns
[20:41] Speaker 1: to the road and flags down a passing truck like
[20:44] Speaker 1: a semi.
[20:45] Speaker 3: Thank god something was passing, Yeah, I mean, and also
[20:48] Speaker 3: how scary that would be to be standing there, like, well,
[20:51] Speaker 3: let's hope this person ripes.
[20:52] Speaker 2: Me let's hope it's not the same person.
[20:55] Speaker 1: So scary the truck drivers, there's two of them, and
[20:57] Speaker 1: they are shocked to find her there. They say, the
[21:00] Speaker 1: fear in her face, they have never seen it.
[21:02] Speaker 2: Before in their lives. It's this is a terrified woman.
[21:04] Speaker 1: They use the wirecutters to get the wrist stuff off.
[21:08] Speaker 1: There's tape around her neck, they get that off. She's
[21:10] Speaker 1: got cuts and scrapes everywhere. She was laying in the
[21:12] Speaker 1: bush and they drive her to the closest service station
[21:15] Speaker 1: where they call the police, who arrive finally when the
[21:19] Speaker 1: sun rises on June fifteenth, and launch into one of
[21:21] Speaker 1: the largest man hunts in Australian history. At the scene
[21:25] Speaker 1: of the attack, they find a stain on the ground
[21:27] Speaker 1: that's later determined to be Peter's blood. So there is
[21:29] Speaker 1: a small pool of blood, but they always say that
[21:32] Speaker 1: it doesn't seem like there's enough blood, and there's no
[21:35] Speaker 1: like brain matter. If he really got shot in the head.
[21:39] Speaker 1: There's inconsistencies there, but who knows. They also find the
[21:43] Speaker 1: orange van that they were driving, about eighty meters off
[21:46] Speaker 1: the road, hidden in the brush. However, roadblocks don't get
[21:50] Speaker 1: set up until around eight hours after the initial attack.
[21:53] Speaker 1: So the search area is vast, it's about two times
[21:56] Speaker 1: the state of.
[21:56] Speaker 2: Texas the search area.
[21:58] Speaker 1: Thank god, helicopter skin the area, but they don't find anything.
[22:04] Speaker 1: Joanne obviously has just survived a terrifying ordeal, and so
[22:08] Speaker 1: you would expect that she'd be treated with empathy and respect. However,
[22:12] Speaker 1: it's the early two thousands, and she's a woman not
[22:15] Speaker 1: to mention young and pretty, and so you would be wrong.
[22:18] Speaker 1: A huge deal is made over the fact that she
[22:20] Speaker 1: just straight up refuses to talk to the press, and there,
[22:24] Speaker 1: you know, it's the thing that happens all the time,
[22:27] Speaker 1: which is she didn't act the way a victim is
[22:29] Speaker 1: supposed to act, which we now know is bullshit.
[22:33] Speaker 2: She's kind of.
[22:33] Speaker 1: Almost like hostily ignoring.
[22:37] Speaker 3: The press, the postle ignoring. That's what I do. That's
[22:41] Speaker 3: the play right out.
[22:42] Speaker 2: Of my playbook. I mean.
[22:44] Speaker 3: Also, the first thing I thought of when you said
[22:46] Speaker 3: that was the dingoes ate my baby.
[22:48] Speaker 2: That's what everyone talks about.
[22:49] Speaker 1: Okay, yes, everyone talks about the Chamberlain case when this
[22:54] Speaker 1: gets brought up.
[22:54] Speaker 2: Because she was treated the same way.
[22:56] Speaker 1: And found out to be totally innocent, She's taken the
[23:00] Speaker 1: very next day to do a play by play reenactment
[23:03] Speaker 1: of exactly what happened in the car.
[23:06] Speaker 2: She walks everyone through it. She doesn't remember a lot
[23:08] Speaker 2: of it.
[23:08] Speaker 1: But she's very like composed, which of course, it's like,
[23:12] Speaker 1: do you think maybe they gave her a valume? Do
[23:15] Speaker 1: you think maybe she wanted to help the police. She's
[23:17] Speaker 1: not going to break down crying in that moment.
[23:19] Speaker 3: She's just like, it's just the judge, you ever compartmentalized,
[23:23] Speaker 3: right exactly? You have to hire people that have alcoholic
[23:26] Speaker 3: parents so that people understand all the tricks.
[23:29] Speaker 2: Of the trade, I mean dissociation.
[23:31] Speaker 3: And she's there, Yeah, chef's kiss to the association. But
[23:37] Speaker 3: she's standing there like, yes, the trauma of her closest
[23:40] Speaker 3: loved one murdered in front of her, and then I
[23:43] Speaker 3: have to take these steps to get that murder, Saul, right, Like,
[23:47] Speaker 3: it's no time to be falling apart.
[23:49] Speaker 1: No, one of the things I tell you right now
[23:51] Speaker 1: that I know and that you don't know, like could
[23:53] Speaker 1: help find my boyfriend if he's still alive, and yeah.
[23:57] Speaker 2: That's supposed to be the agreement anyway, it is.
[24:00] Speaker 1: The British and Australian press immediately pounce on her like
[24:03] Speaker 1: if they are hungry for this, like wolves for the story.
[24:06] Speaker 2: They suggest that her.
[24:07] Speaker 1: Story might not be true, or that she's hiding parts
[24:10] Speaker 1: of it. Joanne gives a press conference eleven days after
[24:13] Speaker 1: the attack, and at the time it's treated as her
[24:16] Speaker 1: like finally deigning to speak to the press, and they
[24:20] Speaker 1: immediately pick apart what she's wearing. She has like a
[24:22] Speaker 1: tank top on that says cheeky monkey. I mean there's
[24:26] Speaker 1: no pr training back then.
[24:27] Speaker 3: No.
[24:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, she doesn't play the victim the way they want
[24:30] Speaker 1: her to. She doesn't play it smoothly.
[24:32] Speaker 3: Also, that's the kind of thing where it's like you're
[24:34] Speaker 3: trying to get an outfit together for a press conference,
[24:36] Speaker 3: a thing you've never dressed for before. You don't have
[24:39] Speaker 3: anybody on your side, and probably if she's in grief
[24:43] Speaker 3: or whatever it is, it's like you're just wearing a shirt.
[24:45] Speaker 1: Yeah you picked up and she's on a trip in
[24:48] Speaker 1: a foreign country. She picks something out of her luggage
[24:51] Speaker 1: and puts it on. Oh, I forgot about that part
[24:53] Speaker 1: about it. It's only what she has. But during the
[24:56] Speaker 1: press conference she acts dismissive. She doesn't cry, which is
[25:00] Speaker 1: a force reported on. But it's literally been less than
[25:03] Speaker 1: two weeks since she was kidnapped that this happens. So
[25:06] Speaker 1: even more articles come out. I mean, it's a huge
[25:08] Speaker 1: cover story, doubting Joanne, saying her tone and behavior don't
[25:12] Speaker 1: seem appropriate.
[25:13] Speaker 2: Blah blah blah. We all know that.
[25:15] Speaker 1: And it seems like she's pretty pissed off at the
[25:17] Speaker 1: press as well as the police, who at this part
[25:20] Speaker 1: start reinterviewing her, and this time with the tone that
[25:24] Speaker 1: she's a suspect, not the victim, and there's video of
[25:27] Speaker 1: this in the documentary. They start questioning her story. They
[25:32] Speaker 1: say that they gave her statement to some like analysts
[25:36] Speaker 1: who said they were twelve apparent inconsistencies lies in her
[25:41] Speaker 1: version of events, meaning like shit didn't add up. And
[25:43] Speaker 1: it's like, oh, you mean the story that she told
[25:45] Speaker 1: you when she's fucking traumatized, maybe high she was also high?
[25:50] Speaker 2: Oh right, right at cannabis joint. Yeah, I forgot about
[25:53] Speaker 2: that part. So they're saying it's inconsistent with the truth.
[25:56] Speaker 3: Someone comes up and shoots your loved one in the
[25:59] Speaker 3: head and then you have to tell the story correctly or.
[26:01] Speaker 1: Like day right, right, So she does get angry at them,
[26:06] Speaker 1: you know, and then After three weeks of this, DNA
[26:09] Speaker 1: testing on the shirt she had been wearing at the
[26:11] Speaker 1: time of the attack comes back and there is a
[26:14] Speaker 1: small speck of blood on it that has nail DNA.
[26:17] Speaker 1: It's not Peter's DNA. It doesn't belong to anyone in
[26:20] Speaker 1: their database of criminals either. Police also turn up CCTV
[26:24] Speaker 1: footage from a Shell gas station back in Alice Springs
[26:28] Speaker 1: from just after midnight on the evening of the attack.
[26:31] Speaker 1: The footage shows a Toyota truck with a canopy matching
[26:33] Speaker 1: Joanne's description. You can't see the plate though, and it
[26:36] Speaker 1: shows a man going into the station. He's wearing a
[26:39] Speaker 1: baseball cap. He has a mustache, just like Joanne said.
[26:43] Speaker 1: We don't know if it's the person that she said
[26:44] Speaker 1: it was. It's just someone happens to drive in who
[26:48] Speaker 1: matches the description at that time.
[26:50] Speaker 3: Multiple descriptions right, car and face right.
[26:53] Speaker 1: Despite all this evidence, there are many stories picking apart
[26:56] Speaker 1: minor inconsistencies. For example, there's conflicting details, composite sketch. We
[27:01] Speaker 1: don't even know if the guy in the Shell station
[27:03] Speaker 1: is him, so if it's not consistent with him, it's
[27:06] Speaker 1: maybe because it isn't him, right, we don't know. So
[27:08] Speaker 1: two years go by with occasional articles that's still cast
[27:11] Speaker 1: doubt on Joanne's story. Peter's body is never recovered and
[27:16] Speaker 1: there's no meaningful leads. And then in two thousand and two,
[27:20] Speaker 1: a forty two year old drug runner named Bradley John Murdoch.
[27:24] Speaker 3: What it's just, it's late in life to be a
[27:27] Speaker 3: drug runner. I think he's just like be a drug
[27:29] Speaker 3: dealer at this point, right.
[27:31] Speaker 1: So he's a bad dude, So people don't think he's guilty.
[27:34] Speaker 2: People do either way.
[27:37] Speaker 1: He's a criminal. He was in a motorcycle gang. He's
[27:41] Speaker 1: been a drug runner for a long time, and there
[27:43] Speaker 1: are some violent acts on his.
[27:46] Speaker 2: Record as well. He's a racist, he has racist tattoos.
[27:49] Speaker 1: He's pulled a gun at a sucker game on an
[27:53] Speaker 1: Aboriginal crowd.
[27:54] Speaker 2: Like he's not a good dude, Okay.
[27:56] Speaker 1: So he's arrested in connection with a different case in
[27:59] Speaker 1: which a twelve year old girl and her mother are
[28:01] Speaker 1: both abducted from their home and they're bound and gagged,
[28:04] Speaker 1: sexually assaulted and kidnapped for twenty hours, driven away. And
[28:10] Speaker 1: this isn't mistaken identity, Like they picked the wrong guy.
[28:13] Speaker 1: In a lineup like they knew him. He lived in
[28:15] Speaker 1: their back house.
[28:16] Speaker 2: They and they identified him.
[28:18] Speaker 1: Yes, this is Bradley John Murdoch, the drug runner. And
[28:22] Speaker 1: he's like six seven six'. Eight he's a huge. Man
[28:26] Speaker 1: and when he's, arrested police noticed a few. Things he
[28:28] Speaker 1: had tie cables in his, truck consistent with what the
[28:31] Speaker 1: mother and daughter said they were tied, with and also
[28:33] Speaker 1: consistent with What joanne had been tied. With the truck
[28:36] Speaker 1: seems to Match joanne's. Description it's the same one as
[28:38] Speaker 1: we looked. At in, Fact murdoch had been tracked down
[28:41] Speaker 1: and interviewed in two thousand and one because his truck
[28:44] Speaker 1: matched the model in.
[28:45] Speaker 2: Those gas STATION cctv.
[28:47] Speaker 1: FOOTAGE i think they just questioned a lot of people
[28:49] Speaker 1: with records who had that, truck but police had not
[28:52] Speaker 1: gotten A dna sample from. Him then they get. One
[28:54] Speaker 1: now it's tested and it's found to be a match
[28:56] Speaker 1: for the blood that had been On joanne's.
[28:58] Speaker 2: Shirt. WOW.
[29:00] Speaker 1: Ok and then he's acquitted of the. Case with the
[29:03] Speaker 1: mother and, daughter it's a hung. Jury it just seems
[29:09] Speaker 1: christ it seems like what's the.
[29:10] Speaker 2: Word it's so fucked.
[29:12] Speaker 1: Up, yeah it's almost like they just put enough reasonable
[29:16] Speaker 1: doubt into the jury's head that they didn't convict.
[29:17] Speaker 2: Him but, right it's clear to most of us that he.
[29:21] Speaker 2: Did gotta have that.
[29:22] Speaker 1: Evidence, Yes and then immediately as he's walking out of the,
[29:26] Speaker 1: courtroom he's tackled by.
[29:28] Speaker 2: Police he's arrested For peter's. Murder oh, shit. Yeah they
[29:32] Speaker 2: were like ready to. Commuts oh, yeah in.
[29:34] Speaker 1: Credible they're, like if he gets off on, this we're
[29:36] Speaker 1: immediately bringing them.
[29:37] Speaker 3: In that had to feel good to like that prosecutor
[29:40] Speaker 3: out every. Word it's, like go ahead and enjoy that
[29:42] Speaker 3: two minutes you got. Acquitted.
[29:45] Speaker 1: Right the case attracts so much attention the trial's delayed
[29:48] Speaker 1: for a, while and so it eventually starts In october
[29:51] Speaker 1: of two thousand and. Five In, Darwin murdo's lawyers use
[29:55] Speaker 1: the angle of Discrediting joanne's testimony because she's ready to
[29:59] Speaker 1: testify aainst. Him this includes suggesting that she was having
[30:02] Speaker 1: an affair while she was living In, sydney which in,
[30:05] Speaker 1: fact she hadn't been cheating On. Peter she had an
[30:07] Speaker 1: affair with a, man so they use that as part
[30:10] Speaker 1: of the.
[30:10] Speaker 2: Headlines, sorry how old is? She twenty? SEVEN i Mean,
[30:15] Speaker 2: yeah isn't that what everyone? Does, yeah and she admitted.
[30:19] Speaker 1: It it wasn't like a revelation at. Trials she admitted
[30:23] Speaker 1: to a.
[30:23] Speaker 2: Delice. Yeah she said that they had had an, affair
[30:26] Speaker 2: they liked each.
[30:26] Speaker 1: Other she was going to go on this trip With
[30:29] Speaker 1: peter and then they were going to see where they.
[30:31] Speaker 1: Landed and she got put into police custody and emailed
[30:36] Speaker 1: him this guy while she was in police, custody like
[30:40] Speaker 1: weeks After peter's death or this, incident and, said when
[30:44] Speaker 1: this is, over meet me In. Berlin it just didn't
[30:46] Speaker 1: look good for. Her, oh and that's why police were
[30:48] Speaker 1: kind of going after her.
[30:49] Speaker 3: MORE i, mean even if it's purely like escapist AND
[30:52] Speaker 3: i just don't want to be in a time where
[30:54] Speaker 3: this is.
[30:55] Speaker 2: Over.
[30:56] Speaker 3: Sorry that's first of, all everyone just stopped putting things
[31:01] Speaker 3: in fucking. WRITING i, mean, seriously she's not a perfect
[31:04] Speaker 3: victim at, all which is upsetting to, people but doesn't
[31:07] Speaker 3: mean she's not a. Victim this is worst case scenario
[31:10] Speaker 3: for IF i was that defense, LAWYER i would just be,
[31:13] Speaker 3: like are you fucking kidding? Me, yeah because this is
[31:17] Speaker 3: motive now.
[31:18] Speaker 2: Right well that's the other thing, Too it's so fucking.
[31:20] Speaker 1: Annoying is they're like when people who say That murdoch
[31:22] Speaker 1: didn't do, it they, say there's no.
[31:23] Speaker 2: Motive there's no.
[31:24] Speaker 1: Motive because she fucking took. Off the motive was to,
[31:27] Speaker 1: murder it to. Rape it's actually assault and rape this.
[31:30] Speaker 1: Woman come, on like that's the motive. Period, no you're completely.
[31:35] Speaker 3: RIGHT i, mean like the idea of a motive for
[31:37] Speaker 3: a serial rapist is the. Act so that doesn't make
[31:41] Speaker 3: sense at, all like saying they didn't have money on
[31:44] Speaker 3: them or something like what the FUCK.
[31:46] Speaker 1: I don't, know, yeah or like trying to steal the. Cars,
[31:48] Speaker 1: no he killed the boyfriend and tied up and kept
[31:52] Speaker 1: alive the.
[31:52] Speaker 3: Girlfriend MAY i introduced you a bunch of other serial
[31:56] Speaker 3: killers over history that we have talked, about serious.
[31:59] Speaker 2: One do you want to? Hear this is why we
[32:01] Speaker 2: talk about.
[32:01] Speaker 1: It So joanne testifies Against, murdoch who she has already
[32:05] Speaker 1: identified in a photo, lineup which also has some issues.
[32:10] Speaker 1: Behind if you watch the, documentary you'll see she might
[32:12] Speaker 1: have seen this guy getting arrested.
[32:14] Speaker 2: In the news and then did the photo line up
[32:17] Speaker 2: and picked.
[32:17] Speaker 1: Him the evidence against him and this whole trial isn't
[32:21] Speaker 1: Great and that's a lot of what people argue is
[32:24] Speaker 1: based on the. Evidence it doesn't show that he's, guilty
[32:27] Speaker 1: even though he could, be, Right so that's difficult for,
[32:31] Speaker 1: people AND i understand, that, yeah that. Is and So
[32:33] Speaker 1: murdoch is found guilty both of the murder and of Assaulting.
[32:36] Speaker 1: Joanne he appeals his sentences multiple, times. Unsuccessfully laws are
[32:41] Speaker 1: passed In australia that prevent any convicted murderer of being
[32:44] Speaker 1: granted parole who has withheld the location of a body
[32:48] Speaker 1: that has not been. Found they keep, saying take us
[32:51] Speaker 1: to the. Body if he didn't do, it then he
[32:53] Speaker 1: can't do that, though right. Right in twenty, Nineteen murdoch
[32:56] Speaker 1: is diagnosed with throat, cancer and he died just about
[32:59] Speaker 1: a year ago In july of twenty twenty, five without
[33:03] Speaker 1: ever revealing the location Of Peter falconio's. Body in the
[33:07] Speaker 1: statement the family says About, murdoch, quote we are only
[33:10] Speaker 1: forced to think about him now that he's. Died we
[33:12] Speaker 1: don't want to let him ruin our lives more than
[33:14] Speaker 1: he already. Has the awful thing is our family's future
[33:17] Speaker 1: With peter was cruelly taken. Away today we instead focus
[33:20] Speaker 1: on the three children we have left and our. Grandchildren
[33:24] Speaker 1: we didn't have much, faith but we were Hoping Bradley
[33:26] Speaker 1: John murdoch would reveal Where peter was before he. Died
[33:29] Speaker 1: but even now we still hold out hope that his
[33:32] Speaker 1: remains will be found end. Quote and The Northern Territory
[33:36] Speaker 1: police are offering a reward of up to five hundred
[33:39] Speaker 1: thousand dollars for information leading to the recovery Of peter's.
[33:43] Speaker 1: Remains he would be fifty three years old right now
[33:46] Speaker 1: if he were still. Alive and that is the story
[33:49] Speaker 1: of the attack On Peter falconio And Joanne.
[33:52] Speaker 3: Lee's, Wow, now what would you do knowing this story
[33:58] Speaker 3: AND i only know you just told. Me, Yeah but
[34:01] Speaker 3: knowing the, story if you found out THE dna evidence
[34:03] Speaker 3: that actually it was all her, plan would that shock
[34:07] Speaker 3: you to your? Bone so is that something you're, like
[34:09] Speaker 3: it's absolutely not possible.
[34:11] Speaker 2: Based on the, evidence it's not. Possible but based on
[34:15] Speaker 2: the evidence against, him and there's OTHER dna evidence that
[34:18] Speaker 2: doesn't check, out it's just a little like it's hard
[34:22] Speaker 2: to believe his story Against. MURDOCH i don't. KNOW i
[34:28] Speaker 2: don't know how to.
[34:29] Speaker 1: SAY i would be, very very shocked if she had
[34:31] Speaker 1: something to do with. It, okay what about?
[34:33] Speaker 2: You you don't? Know, well just based on what you told.
[34:35] Speaker 2: Me it's like that.
[34:36] Speaker 3: Idea it's like believe women, always and yet we have
[34:41] Speaker 3: told many stories about women who never stopped, lying, right
[34:44] Speaker 3: you know WHAT i, mean had very evil intent from early,
[34:48] Speaker 3: days so it's not. IMPOSSIBLE i just think it's fascinating
[34:53] Speaker 3: when cheaters cheat as if it's no big deal in
[34:56] Speaker 3: the grand scheme of, things where it's like you just
[34:59] Speaker 3: put a little time bomb in your.
[35:01] Speaker 2: Future.
[35:02] Speaker 3: Yeah that then tells the person that you care about
[35:04] Speaker 3: the most they cannot trust anything you say or.
[35:07] Speaker 2: Do, Right but what's her motive? Though to be with this?
[35:11] Speaker 2: Guy then just break, up break out your.
[35:13] Speaker 1: Boyfriend they're not, married they have no financial, ties and
[35:17] Speaker 1: That there's just so many weird. Inconsistencies AND i think
[35:20] Speaker 1: that the police, investigation because of the way it was
[35:22] Speaker 1: done first and, foremost made it so that it'd be
[35:25] Speaker 1: really hard to convict someone for this and have everyone
[35:28] Speaker 1: believe they got the right. Guy, yes so anything about
[35:31] Speaker 1: her being guilty based on that evidence also can't be, trusted,
[35:35] Speaker 1: Right SO i just don't think there's more evidence that
[35:38] Speaker 1: this Guy murdock is guilty than she, is and even
[35:41] Speaker 1: that is kind of, loose.
[35:43] Speaker 3: Right although just the affair really, yeah screws, it it's not.
[35:48] Speaker 5: Good but then wise of, Motive, yeah the other people
[35:52] Speaker 5: talk about is like why would how she'd never been
[35:55] Speaker 5: to this, place this remote place in the middle of,
[35:57] Speaker 5: Nowhere how are you going to plan this perfect crime
[36:00] Speaker 5: and get away with?
[36:01] Speaker 1: It, yeah those are other but there are little weird
[36:03] Speaker 1: things like the dog that was with him she identified
[36:06] Speaker 1: as the wrong kind of, dog which just shows that
[36:09] Speaker 1: maybe it's Not.
[36:09] Speaker 2: Murdoch but also she told him she got in the.
[36:12] Speaker 1: Truck he forced in the truck this way and there's
[36:14] Speaker 1: actually no way to get into the truck that. Way
[36:16] Speaker 1: but it's like she was traumatized and she was going through.
[36:19] Speaker 1: It she'd remembered it, INCORRECTLY.
[36:20] Speaker 3: I mean something like, That And i'm just guessing, obviously
[36:23] Speaker 3: but it sounds like the kind of thing where cops
[36:25] Speaker 3: went and re enacted. Something later, On it's, like, well
[36:27] Speaker 3: she's saying she did, this and then you want to,
[36:30] Speaker 3: go how big was the cop that was playing?
[36:32] Speaker 2: Her, right she went did the.
[36:35] Speaker 3: Reenactment she is six foot eight, Also and the other thing, is,
[36:40] Speaker 3: oh she went and said she's so she's standing there,
[36:42] Speaker 3: going this is HOW i did.
[36:43] Speaker 2: It, Yeah like you couldn't have.
[36:45] Speaker 1: Step by step, Yeah and they're, like that doesn't make.
[36:47] Speaker 1: Sense this doesn't make. Sense there's also the theory that
[36:50] Speaker 1: people believe That Peter falconio is still alive and had
[36:54] Speaker 1: just faked his own death and, disappeared and maybe she
[36:56] Speaker 1: helped him with, it and that's why she's. Flying people
[37:00] Speaker 1: say that they've seen.
[37:00] Speaker 2: Him.
[37:01] Speaker 3: Oh some people say she's in on. It some people
[37:03] Speaker 3: say she's.
[37:04] Speaker 1: Not, yeah but that he's still alive and he like
[37:07] Speaker 1: just escaped his life.
[37:09] Speaker 2: And she's basically this is her cover, story, yeah or
[37:13] Speaker 2: or she Her.
[37:15] Speaker 3: Yeah those two, guys it's Like i'm kidnapping your, boyfriend.
[37:18] Speaker 3: RIGHT i think that's the most male ideal. Version we're just, like,
[37:23] Speaker 3: no these are two guys having a. Prank it's not
[37:26] Speaker 3: a man killing the man so he can rape the.
[37:29] Speaker 1: Woman and then there's no. Motive, again like he didn't
[37:31] Speaker 1: have his crazy. Debt he had a lovely, family and he's.
[37:33] Speaker 1: Young he was a very sweet. Guy everyone loved. Him,
[37:36] Speaker 1: hmmm Y, well BUT i think all of it just
[37:39] Speaker 1: as it's just all smoke and mirrors to point away
[37:42] Speaker 1: from the person who most likely murdered him in the
[37:45] Speaker 1: exact way that she said it.
[37:47] Speaker 3: Happened it's interesting BECAUSE i feel like THOSE i saw
[37:51] Speaker 3: them after the, fact eyewitness things so not.
[37:54] Speaker 2: Helpful it just feels like they're always.
[37:57] Speaker 3: Wrong, yeah BUT i, mean, man please come back to
[38:01] Speaker 3: me about this within three, months BECAUSE i.
[38:04] Speaker 2: Don't this is.
[38:05] Speaker 1: FRUSTRATING i. WILL i know you hate. It and it's
[38:07] Speaker 1: not a cold. CASE i didn't give you a cold.
[38:09] Speaker 1: Case right's, solved it's still. Frustrated considered, Solved, yeah that's.
[38:15] Speaker 2: Tough.
[38:16] Speaker 1: Well, also the police wanted to solve it as soon
[38:18] Speaker 1: as possible, too for tourism's, sake you, know and show
[38:23] Speaker 1: that they had got the right. Guy you think that
[38:26] Speaker 1: she would have said that he was six foot eight
[38:28] Speaker 1: or whatever when describing her.
[38:30] Speaker 2: Attacker she doesn't seem like she got a great look at.
[38:33] Speaker 2: Him but she's in the passenger.
[38:36] Speaker 3: Side he pulls up behind them and, says pull, over something's.
[38:38] Speaker 3: Wrong she's sitting in the passenger, seat she's talking to.
[38:41] Speaker 3: Him if she did turn, around it would be headlights
[38:45] Speaker 3: in her.
[38:45] Speaker 1: Eyes. Yeah all of the inconsistencies on her that they
[38:48] Speaker 1: placed on her can be.
[38:49] Speaker 2: Explained, yeah by.
[38:51] Speaker 3: Logic yeah, yeah, Wow, okay well great job killing and
[38:58] Speaker 3: interesting and. Important, yeah uh, GOD i HOPE i, know
[39:02] Speaker 3: it would just be.
[39:03] Speaker 2: Nice i'll let you. Know, okay thank.
[39:04] Speaker 3: You we're going to take a left turn today in
[39:09] Speaker 3: honor of The World. Cup oh that's happening here in

[39:34] Speaker 2: AMAZING i heard something about ranch stressing being probably.
[39:37] Speaker 3: People are sending it back to. Themselves people are getting
[39:39] Speaker 3: caught with it in their carry, ons AND i think
[39:43] Speaker 3: for a lot of people, here it's like people here
[39:45] Speaker 3: are being reminded of why this is a great. Country
[39:49] Speaker 3: somebody ran stressing it's ran stressing and southern, food and someone,
[39:54] Speaker 3: said it's, like, Uh i've heard this twice. Now it's

[40:14] Speaker 3: terrible decisions for, them thank.
[40:16] Speaker 2: You it's the. People they force us to pay taxes
[40:19] Speaker 2: that go to do terrible. Things but we don't want.
[40:22] Speaker 3: That we don't want, it and we love our fellow.

[41:40] Speaker 3: excited that you're. Here so this story Begins september, third
[41:44] Speaker 3: nineteen eighty, nine just before five O'CLOCK. Pm it's The
[41:49] Speaker 3: South american qualifiers for the nineteen Ninety World cup at
[41:52] Speaker 3: The Maricana stadium In rio de Jan. Ero the matches
[41:56] Speaker 3: Between brazil And. Chile i'm pronouncing It chile because that's
[42:00] Speaker 3: how you're supposed to pronounce, it but it makes it
[42:02] Speaker 3: sound LIKE i know What i'm, doing AND i absolutely do,
[42:05] Speaker 3: not BUT i feel self conscious about, it But i'll
[42:07] Speaker 3: still say. It we appreciate, that kind of like an
[42:09] Speaker 3: art teacher in high.
[42:10] Speaker 2: School it's, like have you ever been To chile Or?
[42:13] Speaker 3: Brasil so in this match That i'm telling you about
[42:18] Speaker 3: it's about to take, Place brazil has the. Advantage they
[42:21] Speaker 3: have the home field. Advantage but Also brazil in the
[42:24] Speaker 3: soccer world, football as the rest of the entire globe calls.
[42:27] Speaker 3: It in, Football brazil is a. Powerhouse the kids play
[42:32] Speaker 3: with a, smaller heavier ball as they grow, up so
[42:35] Speaker 3: by the time they get to the bigs or even the,
[42:39] Speaker 3: mids they are faster and sharper and. BETTER i saw,
[42:44] Speaker 3: that and It's brazil is Where pele is. From who's
[42:48] Speaker 3: the greatest many believe the greatest of all. Time, Basically
[42:51] Speaker 3: chile is going into this the, underdog just Because brazil
[42:55] Speaker 3: is like The yankees of, football do not write in
[42:59] Speaker 3: no one.
[43:00] Speaker 2: CARES i don't know how right or WRONG i, am
[43:02] Speaker 2: or you don't, care thank.
[43:04] Speaker 3: You it's just slightly defensive about how MUCH i don't
[43:07] Speaker 3: know about What i'm talking. About, Okay, So brazil has
[43:09] Speaker 3: won The World cup five, times more than any other,
[43:13] Speaker 3: country but The chilean fans still have faith their team
[43:16] Speaker 3: could beat the, odds thanks in no small part to
[43:19] Speaker 3: their thirty two year old captain and the, Goalkeeper Roberto,
[43:23] Speaker 3: Rojas robert The. Red he is ready to do whatever
[43:27] Speaker 3: it takes to get his team to The World, cup
[43:30] Speaker 3: and that ambition will lead to one of the most
[43:32] Speaker 3: notorious incidents In South american sports. History this is the
[43:37] Speaker 3: story of the nineteen eighty Nine brazil Versus Chile World cup.
[43:41] Speaker 3: Qualifiers is this the wrong goal? Story there's a lot
[43:45] Speaker 3: of elements to this. Story can you see?
[43:48] Speaker 4: It?
[43:48] Speaker 2: What?
[43:49] Speaker 3: Do there are other waves? Coming i'm having the hugest
[43:51] Speaker 3: offlash right.
[43:52] Speaker 2: Now oh you were, like he's so. Angry can you
[43:55] Speaker 2: see how MUCH i love? Football?
[43:57] Speaker 4: Oh?
[43:57] Speaker 1: No.
[43:57] Speaker 3: Okay so the main sources used for today's glory are
[44:00] Speaker 3: an episode of ESPN's thirty four thirty, podcasts not thirty
[44:05] Speaker 3: by thirty the measurements THAT i once said that show
[44:08] Speaker 3: was Entitled i'm also a twenty twenty five episode of
[44:11] Speaker 3: BBC's Sporting witness, podcast and an article by a writer
[44:16] Speaker 3: Named Daniel edwards at a little website called goal dot,
[44:20] Speaker 3: com and the rest of those sources are in our show.
[44:23] Speaker 3: Notes so there's already been drama Between brazil And chile
[44:28] Speaker 3: before the playoff match That i'm talking. About two years
[44:31] Speaker 3: before nineteen eighty, seven they went up against each other
[44:34] Speaker 3: in an early round of a tournament called The Copa,
[44:37] Speaker 3: america which is between all The Southern american men's national football.
[44:42] Speaker 3: Teams brazil is the favorite to win once, again but
[44:46] Speaker 3: when they go head to head With, Chile chile ends
[44:49] Speaker 3: up beating them in a stunning four zero. Upset so
[44:53] Speaker 3: the goalie Of chile's, Team Roberto, rojas plays a flawless.
[44:58] Speaker 3: Game he does not let a single goal get by,
[45:01] Speaker 3: him which is no small. Feat as Journalist DANIEL. A
[45:05] Speaker 3: larcone puts it quote quite, frankly goalkeepers are. INSANE a
[45:08] Speaker 3: good goalkeeper has a certain amount of disregard for his
[45:11] Speaker 3: or her own.
[45:12] Speaker 2: Safety they live on the. Edge, yeah, terrifying so.
[45:15] Speaker 3: Scary so over his decade long, Career rojas has done just,
[45:20] Speaker 3: that earning respect with his, passion fearlessness and athleticism that
[45:25] Speaker 3: he plays. With let's take a picture. There he is
[45:28] Speaker 3: superstar Of chile. Football he's been caught up in a
[45:31] Speaker 3: couple noteworthy, scandals though from earlier in his. Career one
[45:35] Speaker 3: involved him lying about his age so he could participate
[45:38] Speaker 3: in youth tournaments it's, odd and another involving doping produce
[45:44] Speaker 3: standard scandals for football, players but he, is despite.
[45:48] Speaker 2: That a national.
[45:49] Speaker 3: Hero the fans call Him El condor because condors are
[45:55] Speaker 3: the national symbol Of. Chile we're going to learn a lot, today,
[45:58] Speaker 3: Okay and they kind of think he looks like a
[46:01] Speaker 3: condor's but it's all a form of. Respect so, basically
[46:06] Speaker 3: When chile goes and Whips brazil's ass at The Copa
[46:10] Speaker 3: america nineteen eighty, seven his national icon status is truly,
[46:14] Speaker 3: cemented and Ultimately chile places second in that. Tournament they
[46:20] Speaker 3: as a country have appeared at The World cup several.
[46:22] Speaker 3: Times their best run was in nineteen sixty. Two this
[46:25] Speaker 3: Is chile when they came in third. Place but now
[46:29] Speaker 3: This World cup tournament in nineteen ninety that's going to
[46:31] Speaker 3: be In. Italy this feels like it's their big. Chance
[46:34] Speaker 3: it's the final days of the brutal military dictatorship Of.
[46:39] Speaker 3: Pinochet it's a time of major political and social upheaval
[46:43] Speaker 3: in the. Country soccer matches have become places where Impassion
[46:47] Speaker 3: chileans can express their national pride on a global, stage
[46:52] Speaker 3: so there's a lot.
[46:52] Speaker 2: In it for.
[46:53] Speaker 3: Them the nineteen eighty Nine World cup qualifiers Have chile
[46:57] Speaker 3: And brazil face off. Again they played two games in this.
[47:01] Speaker 3: Qualifier the first one takes place In santiago On august
[47:05] Speaker 3: thirteenth at the city's national. Stadium it's Called National. Stadium
[47:09] Speaker 3: it's nearly at. Capacity the crowd is riled. Up look
[47:12] Speaker 3: how big this stadium. Is just to give you this
[47:15] Speaker 3: sense of it's Super bowl size and. LEVEL i, mean
[47:18] Speaker 3: obviously we know, this but the rest of the world's
[47:20] Speaker 3: football is our football wow with different shaped, Balls so
[47:25] Speaker 3: all those people going. Crazy, normally both football teams playing
[47:31] Speaker 3: that day come out of that tunnel and onto the field,
[47:34] Speaker 3: together mostly so that riled up fans don't throw shit
[47:38] Speaker 3: at the opposing, team, Right so if they're both, there
[47:40] Speaker 3: nobody throws. Anything and so that is just basically standard
[47:44] Speaker 3: play for these. Qualifiers but on this, day Before brazil
[47:49] Speaker 3: is ready to, go team Captain Roberto rojas just has
[47:53] Speaker 3: his team go out. First he leads them out onto
[47:56] Speaker 3: the field Without, brazil Forcing brazil to walk into this
[48:00] Speaker 3: pack stadium. Alone it's an explicit break from. Protocol it's
[48:04] Speaker 3: meant to Rattle brazil in a crucial pregame, moment but
[48:08] Speaker 3: it's also part of a larger mentality That chilean Journalist
[48:11] Speaker 3: Danilo diaz shorthands as quote mass bundidos klos, bandidos which
[48:17] Speaker 3: means more bandits than the, bandits which is, basically they're
[48:21] Speaker 3: going to fuck with, you so fuck with them, first.
[48:23] Speaker 2: Right that's kind of the motto in.
[48:25] Speaker 3: Podcasting not all teams of this era are of This
[48:31] Speaker 3: macavelian mindset where the end justifies the, means but some,
[48:35] Speaker 3: do and in ESPN's thirty for thirty, podcast they cite
[48:39] Speaker 3: a few stories about Various Latin american clubs accused of
[48:43] Speaker 3: allegedly doing these these. Moves some have been accused of
[48:48] Speaker 3: allegedly drugging their opponents Before matt SHIT.
[48:53] Speaker 1: I or that to?
[48:53] Speaker 2: You yeah right for your podcast does it go hi.
[48:56] Speaker 3: Question they've also been accused of covertly photographing these players
[49:01] Speaker 3: and compromising situations with sex, workers then blowing those pictures
[49:06] Speaker 3: up and hanging them around the arena before The.
[49:10] Speaker 2: King that is, vicious it's fucking.
[49:14] Speaker 3: Insane some club managers have been accused of releasing a
[49:19] Speaker 3: small dog onto the pitch when the team is ahead
[49:22] Speaker 3: to basically run down The clock's the that's the third
[49:27] Speaker 3: in that, list the least. Bad, yeah but it's all dirty,
[49:29] Speaker 3: play and the list goes on and. On So roberto's
[49:32] Speaker 3: move of walking out without The brazilian, team you, know
[49:36] Speaker 3: is kind of that muscling that they, do and it
[49:38] Speaker 3: definitely sets a palpable feeling of hostility in the. Stadium
[49:42] Speaker 3: that of, course it's even before. Gameplay once the game,
[49:45] Speaker 3: starts that tone increases. Dramatically so now we're just a
[49:50] Speaker 3: minute and a half into the. Game when A chilean
[49:52] Speaker 3: midfielder aggressively tackles A brazilian player and injures him, somehow
[49:58] Speaker 3: That chilean player only gets a yellow, card which is
[50:01] Speaker 3: the official warning. Card but then as the Injured brazilian
[50:06] Speaker 3: player is being taken off the, field a fight breaks
[50:09] Speaker 3: out between other players and someone else is, injured and
[50:14] Speaker 3: this time A brazilian player is given a red, card
[50:17] Speaker 3: which means he is now kicked out of the. Game,
[50:19] Speaker 3: afterward That brazilian player will tell reporters, QUOTE i didn't
[50:23] Speaker 3: hit him that, hard so it just started with a
[50:26] Speaker 3: bit of. Violence around minute, fourteen The chilean player who
[50:30] Speaker 3: got the yellow card tries to trip A brazilian midfielder
[50:33] Speaker 3: and when he realizes he is going to get carded,
[50:35] Speaker 3: again which probably means he's going to get red, carded
[50:39] Speaker 3: he tries to intimidate the, ref so then A brazilian
[50:43] Speaker 3: player steps in to defend the ref while Several chilean
[50:46] Speaker 3: players grab their teammate try to get him to calm
[50:48] Speaker 3: down and come over to the bench, basically and they
[50:51] Speaker 3: are all worried he's becoming a. Liability so it's a
[50:55] Speaker 3: pretty even match between the two teams and the, Goalie
[50:59] Speaker 3: Roberto rojas is playing a near perfect. Game he defends
[51:03] Speaker 3: shot after shot made By. Brazil by, halftime the score
[51:07] Speaker 3: is zero to, zero which is a very big deal
[51:10] Speaker 3: when teams are playing Against. Brazil just to keep them
[51:13] Speaker 3: from scoring is, yeah because you can end in a
[51:16] Speaker 3: tie and you can and just keep them from scoring
[51:20] Speaker 3: and get one more than, them and that's all you
[51:22] Speaker 3: need to.
[51:22] Speaker 2: DO i just explained it all.
[51:24] Speaker 3: Sports but eleven minutes into the matches second, half things
[51:29] Speaker 3: take a turn when A chilean defender near the. Goal so,
[51:33] Speaker 3: Basically Roberto, rojas the goalie is back here by the
[51:36] Speaker 3: goal box and nearby one of Another chilean player needs
[51:41] Speaker 3: to basically kick the ball down there so they can
[51:44] Speaker 3: go start playing on the other end of the.
[51:45] Speaker 2: Field but like.
[51:47] Speaker 3: You, anticipated, yep, sorry, yeah when he goes to do, this,
[51:51] Speaker 3: no because it's, famous he goes to do it and
[51:54] Speaker 3: instead of sending, it he hits the back of his
[51:57] Speaker 3: own players and it bounces off that guy's leg and
[51:59] Speaker 3: goes in to the fucking.
[52:00] Speaker 2: Net so he. Scores he's on his own team For.
[52:05] Speaker 2: BRAZIL i only know about this because of events explaining
[52:07] Speaker 2: it to, me and it's just it's a. Nightmare.
[52:10] Speaker 3: Yeah and of course now there's already hostility and bad
[52:13] Speaker 3: vibes in the.
[52:13] Speaker 2: Stadium people go.
[52:15] Speaker 1: Nuts so he does that on his own home team
[52:18] Speaker 1: field with an audience.
[52:19] Speaker 3: Full of nightmare like hardcore. Fans tensions are. High now
[52:25] Speaker 3: this gigantic mistake from the. Underdogs now THAT i know
[52:28] Speaker 3: you're doing the, STORY i can't believe.
[52:29] Speaker 2: It this is so fucked. Up, yeah that's, GREAT i love.
[52:32] Speaker 3: It, Yeah, okay it's an accidental assistant goal For. Brazil
[52:35] Speaker 3: AS i, said the bad vibes go from bad to.
[52:38] Speaker 3: Rotten the score is now one to Zero.
[52:40] Speaker 1: Brazil but who is it the fault of the guy
[52:42] Speaker 1: who kicked it or the guy who ricocheted off of the?
[52:45] Speaker 2: Kicker but he, okay he kicked it to his to his.
[52:48] Speaker 2: GUY i, mean, like who. Knows it's nobody's.
[52:50] Speaker 3: FAULT i literally watched four soccer games and without a,
[52:54] Speaker 3: Pause i'm, like it's the fault of the man with the.
[52:56] Speaker 3: Leg HOW i KNOW i played. SOCCER i love orange.
[53:00] Speaker 3: SLICES i think it's LIKE i would, say primary, kicker
[53:04] Speaker 3: because he was supposed to kick it up in afar
[53:06] Speaker 3: and then he just kicked it straight over to that.
[53:08] Speaker 2: Guy.
[53:09] Speaker 3: Nightmare so now there's just seven minutes left in the,
[53:12] Speaker 3: game and another bizarre thing. Happens after A brazilian, Foul
[53:17] Speaker 3: chile is given a free. Kick, right the underdogs have a.
[53:21] Speaker 3: Chance can fucking even it?
[53:22] Speaker 1: Up as long as you don't lose with that, point,
[53:25] Speaker 1: yes everyone would be, fine.
[53:27] Speaker 2: Just clear clear.
[53:28] Speaker 3: It but when The brazilian players hear That chile's being
[53:33] Speaker 3: given a free, kick all The brazilian players on the,
[53:36] Speaker 3: field including their, goalie get. Furious and they start arguing
[53:41] Speaker 3: and confronting the refs and going crazy that this is not.
[53:44] Speaker 3: Fair and as they're doing, that A chilean player that's
[53:48] Speaker 3: near the ball realizes they never called time, out and
[53:51] Speaker 3: he very subtly passes the ball to a teammate who
[53:55] Speaker 3: then just kicks it straight into the.
[53:56] Speaker 2: Goal it is.
[53:58] Speaker 3: Legal play and they make that. Point holy, Shit, yes.
[54:03] Speaker 2: So chile gets a, goal so we're one to. One
[54:06] Speaker 2: we're one to. One everything's gonna be. Fine so isn't that?
[54:10] Speaker 3: Insane that is so? Banana they actually review it and it's.
[54:13] Speaker 3: Decided it's it's declaredly like tie them out or. WHATEVER i,
[54:17] Speaker 3: mean they must have. Right so the game ends in a,
[54:19] Speaker 3: tie one to. One. Whew well the crowd they were
[54:23] Speaker 3: growing pissed off, before but now the game's.
[54:26] Speaker 2: Over no one.
[54:26] Speaker 3: Satisfied it's like both teams lost to them. Essentially so
[54:30] Speaker 3: as the teams walk off the, field that fans just start.
[54:34] Speaker 3: Throwing they throw, batteries they throw, rocks they throw anything
[54:37] Speaker 3: they can.
[54:37] Speaker 2: Is a battery and rock.
[54:38] Speaker 1: Night it was a soccer b yob or are just
[54:43] Speaker 1: hand them out when you walk?
[54:45] Speaker 2: In who's got? Those? Night At dodger.
[54:48] Speaker 3: Stadium they, said, well it was, like you, know it
[54:50] Speaker 3: was nineteen ninety so there's people with.
[54:52] Speaker 2: Radios but still it's just a little. Bit but they're,
[54:55] Speaker 2: Like i'm not throwing my, Radio i'm.
[54:57] Speaker 3: Battery that's, right, honey give me your. Purse later on
[55:00] Speaker 3: in the locker, room a reporter Calls roberto out for
[55:04] Speaker 3: fanning the flames of the fan hostilities by Leaving brazil
[55:08] Speaker 3: in the tunnel when they were walking, out And roberto
[55:12] Speaker 3: responds by, saying, quote, man we have to use everything
[55:15] Speaker 3: we can to. Win so there's another game left between
[55:19] Speaker 3: these two, teams so they have a final kind of
[55:22] Speaker 3: chance to reverse. This both teams. Do according to the
[55:26] Speaker 3: way the points system works in The World cup, Qualifiers
[55:29] Speaker 3: chile has to win by at least one goal to
[55:32] Speaker 3: stay in the running to play in The World.
[55:34] Speaker 2: Cup, okay they just need to get a.
[55:35] Speaker 1: Point they need to get more point than they want more,
[55:38] Speaker 1: points which is how you win.
[55:40] Speaker 3: Everything now we're back where we. Started It's september, third
[55:43] Speaker 3: nineteen eighty. Nine we're In rio De, janeiro where at
[55:47] Speaker 3: The Maracana stadium the energy could not be more different
[55:50] Speaker 3: than it was In.
[55:51] Speaker 2: Santiago the vibes are.
[55:53] Speaker 3: Great it's described later as a one hundred and fifty
[55:56] Speaker 3: thousand person party with a Mostly brazilian. Crowd they're all
[56:00] Speaker 3: wearing the country's. Colors they have, tambourines they have little,
[56:03] Speaker 3: drums they're shooting off, flares they're shooting off fireworks in
[56:06] Speaker 3: the Stand jesus and they're all.
[56:08] Speaker 2: Hot so it's just a great. Time hot as in
[56:12] Speaker 2: like good. Looking, yeah we're In.
[56:13] Speaker 3: Brazil so the match, begins and like probably every other
[56:18] Speaker 3: team On, Chile roberto the, goalie is playing like his
[56:21] Speaker 3: life depends on. It he blocks shot after shot from
[56:24] Speaker 3: The brazilian. Offenders the crowds keyed. Up they're cheering When
[56:27] Speaker 3: brazil launches balls Towards chile's goal because it's home, team
[56:32] Speaker 3: and When roberto blocks, it they jeer and they boo
[56:35] Speaker 3: and doesn't, matter doesn't shake. Him at, halftime the score
[56:39] Speaker 3: is still zero, zero which is huge For. Chile they
[56:41] Speaker 3: are Preventing brazil from.
[56:44] Speaker 1: Scoring but if they, tie Then brazil, wins, right, yeah,
[56:49] Speaker 1: okay it's like a sudden death.
[56:50] Speaker 3: Situation, Yeah, so less than five minutes into the second,
[56:54] Speaker 3: half a shot finally gets Past. Roberto brazil scores the
[56:59] Speaker 3: stadium rops in, cheers doesn't let. Up it's now one Zero,
[57:03] Speaker 3: brazil so everyone of course is locked on this. Gameplay
[57:07] Speaker 3: as The chileans now have the, ball they're driving it
[57:09] Speaker 3: down the.
[57:10] Speaker 2: Field some are looking.
[57:11] Speaker 3: Toward their end Where Roberto rojas is standing in the
[57:14] Speaker 3: goal box when if flare suddenly comes down out of
[57:19] Speaker 3: the audience and falls onto the field like near. Him
[57:23] Speaker 3: it lands in a plume of smoke that just seems
[57:26] Speaker 3: to swallow him Whole dumbledore.
[57:31] Speaker 2: Is it job From Arrested.
[57:33] Speaker 3: Development after a, moment the smoke clears and the crowd
[57:37] Speaker 3: looks in horror as they Watch Roberto rojas writhing around
[57:40] Speaker 3: on the ground in, pain clutching his bloody.
[57:44] Speaker 2: Face oh my, GOD i didn't know.
[57:46] Speaker 3: This he's immediately carried off the field and into the locker.
[57:50] Speaker 3: ROOM i think we have a picture of the flare
[57:53] Speaker 3: falling onto the field during the. Game some drunk person
[57:57] Speaker 3: just holy. Shit, yeah it's like a.
[57:59] Speaker 2: Firework.
[58:00] Speaker 3: Yeah and then we have, photos of course of him
[58:03] Speaker 3: being carried, off, bloody being carried off the. Field that's
[58:08] Speaker 3: him down, there and you can see the blood from this.
[58:10] Speaker 2: Side, god that's, violent it's.
[58:12] Speaker 3: Crazy so they get him into the locker room and
[58:14] Speaker 3: they find a one and a quarter inch gash across his.
[58:17] Speaker 3: Forehead in protest of what seems like a blatant attack
[58:20] Speaker 3: on their captain by a crazed, fan the chile players
[58:24] Speaker 3: refuse to continue this. Game brazil, meanwhile is. Stunned they
[58:28] Speaker 3: have no idea what's. Happened they know it's, serious and
[58:31] Speaker 3: they also know that this happening could Hand chile the automatic.
[58:35] Speaker 3: Win so in the aftermath of the game's abrupt, ending
[58:40] Speaker 3: Many chileans are of course. Furious so it's another one
[58:43] Speaker 3: of these weird endings where it's all of a, sudden
[58:45] Speaker 3: we're just in this insane medical problem and no one
[58:48] Speaker 3: really knows what's going. On some of The chileans even
[58:52] Speaker 3: go protest outside of The brazilian embassy In.
[58:55] Speaker 2: Santiago when they go back.
[58:56] Speaker 1: Home, well aren't The brazilians pissed, too? Though because they
[58:59] Speaker 1: were going to?
[59:00] Speaker 3: Win you, Know, well they don't know what's going, on
[59:03] Speaker 3: so they don't they think that maybe they're a fan
[59:06] Speaker 3: of theirs is who did this, right like through this
[59:08] Speaker 3: flare right that it was kind of an, attack and
[59:11] Speaker 3: so they're just kind of not sure what to do about,
[59:14] Speaker 3: it But chile is, like you've attacked our. Player you
[59:17] Speaker 3: did this on. Purpose there's a lot of emotion on
[59:19] Speaker 3: The chilean, side but there's healthy speculation and suspicion about
[59:25] Speaker 3: what happened on The brazilian. Side many onlookers are wondering
[59:28] Speaker 3: how a flare would result in the laceration instead of
[59:32] Speaker 3: resulting in. Burns roberto has no. Burns he's insisting the
[59:36] Speaker 3: injury was a result of that flare and there is
[59:39] Speaker 3: no evidence anything different would.
[59:41] Speaker 2: HAPPENED i know that was going to.
[59:42] Speaker 1: Happen and then like it's like he's a wrestler who
[59:45] Speaker 1: has like a fucking razor blade and his.
[59:48] Speaker 2: Hit, shit yeah up, asleeve right exactly.
[59:51] Speaker 3: So even though hundreds of cameras are present at the
[59:54] Speaker 3: match that, day it's initially thought they were all pointed
[59:57] Speaker 3: down toward the opposite end of the. Field within, hours
[1:00:01] Speaker 3: a photographer Named Ricardo alfieri comes forward saying that during the,
[1:00:06] Speaker 3: game he saw the flare out of the corner of
[1:00:09] Speaker 3: his eye and he whipped around and snapped five shots
[1:00:13] Speaker 3: as the flare fell to the. Ground oh, shit and
[1:00:16] Speaker 3: his undeveloped photos gets shopped. Around he basically goes and
[1:00:19] Speaker 3: shops them to all The brazilian, newspapers and a newspaper
[1:00:23] Speaker 3: CALLED Oh globo is the one who gets, them buys,
[1:00:26] Speaker 3: them and in the middle of the night calls the
[1:00:29] Speaker 3: head of their photo. Lab she's fast asleep at. Home they,
[1:00:32] Speaker 3: say get in here and develop these pictures for. Us
[1:00:35] Speaker 3: it is unclear how Much alfieri is. PAID espn says
[1:00:39] Speaker 3: it's around five thousand dollars.
[1:00:41] Speaker 1: In nineteen eighty, nine eighty nine eighty, nine five thousand
[1:00:45] Speaker 1: today is ten thirteen.
[1:00:48] Speaker 3: Thousand close, though but no one attempts to translate it
[1:00:51] Speaker 3: In brazilian, money so we don't know the. Reason we
[1:00:54] Speaker 3: can just assume that it's he got a bunch of
[1:00:56] Speaker 3: money much higher than the going. Rate so these five
[1:01:00] Speaker 3: photographs run in THE O globo newspaper the next, morning
[1:01:03] Speaker 3: in full, color and they clearly show this flare landing
[1:01:08] Speaker 3: several feet Behind Roberto, rojas making no contact with, him
[1:01:14] Speaker 3: then him throwing his body into the plume of smoke
[1:01:19] Speaker 3: and basically becoming a part of. It there's no contact
[1:01:24] Speaker 3: between this flare And Roberta, rojas and these photos like
[1:01:28] Speaker 3: to show that very, clearly he's not even close to.
[1:01:30] Speaker 2: It it's back.
[1:01:31] Speaker 3: There and he's claiming that the cut is on his, forehead,
[1:01:35] Speaker 3: right and then basically the pictures go that he throws
[1:01:38] Speaker 3: himself into the flair and then there's. Blood, Right so
[1:01:43] Speaker 3: now everyone thinks it's in the. Newspaper so now everyone
[1:01:45] Speaker 3: thinks it's an elaborate's. Done when police track down the
[1:01:49] Speaker 3: person who's set off the, flair they find out it's
[1:01:52] Speaker 3: a Young brazilian fan in her twenties Named we're not
[1:01:56] Speaker 3: sure about the pronunciation of this fan's, name but we
[1:01:58] Speaker 3: think It's Rosaneanery. Mayo so setting off flares was very
[1:02:03] Speaker 3: common at football games In South, america or at, least you,
[1:02:06] Speaker 3: know firecrackers and flares.
[1:02:09] Speaker 2: Whatnot in the.
[1:02:10] Speaker 3: Eighties they would do it a. Lot hers just happened
[1:02:12] Speaker 3: to be the one that hit the.
[1:02:13] Speaker 2: Field she pointed it towards the, field.
[1:02:16] Speaker 3: Well toward the, field but not toward a. Person so
[1:02:19] Speaker 3: she's eventually cleared of any involvement in like a conspiracy
[1:02:22] Speaker 3: to Injure. Rojas but in a weird, twist the public
[1:02:26] Speaker 3: interest around her becomes so intense she basically becomes an
[1:02:29] Speaker 3: overnight celebrity for setting the, flare and a few months,
[1:02:33] Speaker 3: later In, november the same, year she's on the cover
[1:02:36] Speaker 3: Of Brazilian. Playboy WHAT i told you everyone was hot
[1:02:40] Speaker 3: at this. Game she's basically identified as The maracana fireworks.
[1:02:44] Speaker 2: Girl, wow she went viral before going viral as, Right she's,
[1:02:48] Speaker 2: Like i'm in this.
[1:02:49] Speaker 3: Too but in the, end the investigators Conclude roberto's gash
[1:02:53] Speaker 3: was self. Inflicted, ack what did he like hit his
[1:02:56] Speaker 3: head on the ground or. Something, basically he saw the
[1:02:59] Speaker 3: flare drop and then he opportunistically was like he basically
[1:03:05] Speaker 3: was going to injure, himself and then basically he thought
[1:03:08] Speaker 3: the flare is the perfect excuse to be. Injured but
[1:03:12] Speaker 3: basically he doesn't talk about any of. This he keeps
[1:03:15] Speaker 3: his mouth. SHUT, fifa which is the international football governing,
[1:03:20] Speaker 3: body Declares chile the match losers and Advances brazil to
[1:03:24] Speaker 3: the nineteen Ninety World, cup and then months, later after,
[1:03:29] Speaker 3: INVESTIGATING fifa Hands roberto a lifetime ban from. Competition the
[1:03:35] Speaker 3: Team chile has fined thirty one thousand dollars and that's
[1:03:39] Speaker 3: how much in today's, money.
[1:03:40] Speaker 2: Fifty six dollars eighty thousand.
[1:03:43] Speaker 3: Dollars, yeah so Basically roberto finally has to come clean
[1:03:47] Speaker 3: and he reveals he slashed himself with a razor blade
[1:03:50] Speaker 3: that he'd hidden in his goalie glows shit before the match.
[1:03:55] Speaker 3: Began what he's just waiting for a moment to do.
[1:03:58] Speaker 3: This he basically had a backup so that in case
[1:04:03] Speaker 3: it was, needed this could take. Place because they knew,
[1:04:06] Speaker 3: that you, know like the dirty play was going to.
[1:04:08] Speaker 3: Happen anything could. Happen they had to be. Ready idea got,
[1:04:12] Speaker 3: it but.
[1:04:12] Speaker 2: You ended up being the dirty player and bad.
[1:04:16] Speaker 3: Dirty he basically says that the idea of doing this
[1:04:23] Speaker 3: was like an insurance policy idea that was lingering in his,
[1:04:25] Speaker 3: head or even an escape patch to Get chile out
[1:04:29] Speaker 3: of matches that had taken a downward. Turn and he
[1:04:33] Speaker 3: didn't act. Alone That chilean head coach and team doctor
[1:04:36] Speaker 3: were also in on this.
[1:04:37] Speaker 2: Scheme.
[1:04:38] Speaker 3: Dude so in an interview, Later roberto tells a newspaper,
[1:04:42] Speaker 3: QUOTE i cut myself with a razor and the farce was.
[1:04:45] Speaker 3: Discovered it was a cut to my, dignity and this
[1:04:48] Speaker 3: all runs under the Headline i'm. Guilty so he genuinely seems,
[1:04:54] Speaker 3: remorseful which might explain why in two thousand and, ONE
[1:04:57] Speaker 3: fifa rescends that lifetime ban And Roberto roja goes on
[1:05:02] Speaker 3: to coach goalies in of all, Places, brazil shit shepherding
[1:05:08] Speaker 3: a new generation of soccer, players and later he becomes
[1:05:11] Speaker 3: a well known sports pundit In South. America despite, everything
[1:05:15] Speaker 3: he's in his sixties. Now he is a beloved sports
[1:05:18] Speaker 3: legend In. Chile he's a hero to many fans In brazil.
[1:05:22] Speaker 3: Too he lives, there he coaches. There his Wife vivian
[1:05:27] Speaker 3: has TOLD cnn, quote here In, Brazil roberto has always
[1:05:31] Speaker 3: been loved the most important thing For brazilians is that he,
[1:05:34] Speaker 3: has in his, interviews come across as a human being
[1:05:37] Speaker 3: with a very distinct and good, character and he has
[1:05:40] Speaker 3: admitted his guilt and been Forgiven.
[1:05:42] Speaker 1: Yeah take responsibility for your, bullshit and so doubling down
[1:05:46] Speaker 1: with a bunch of fucking.
[1:05:47] Speaker 3: Yeah lies and being, like, hey how about we talk
[1:05:51] Speaker 3: about the insane pressure that sports puts on the players
[1:05:56] Speaker 3: and the staff to win no matter, what at all.
[1:05:59] Speaker 2: Costs and that's the story of the Condor Roberto. Rojas.

[1:06:20] Speaker 3: also the sweet part of The World cup having such a,
[1:06:24] Speaker 3: profound beautiful effect on this country is we can celebrate
[1:06:28] Speaker 3: and enjoy sports without being emotionally invested right, therefore without
[1:06:33] Speaker 3: beating the shit out of the opposing teams fans in
[1:06:37] Speaker 3: the parking lot or something like, that and instead enjoy
[1:06:40] Speaker 3: like the show of the show and, suddenly you, know
[1:06:44] Speaker 3: and maybe it's too, general BUT i think it's true
[1:06:46] Speaker 3: For american male. Culture you get to be there and
[1:06:49] Speaker 3: enjoy the fun and the partying and the drinking and
[1:06:52] Speaker 3: the hooha without turning a bus over and lighting it
[1:06:55] Speaker 3: on fire because you just are. Like that's enabling the
[1:06:58] Speaker 3: people In, Lawrence kansas to fully support The albanian team
