[0:16] Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to my favorite murder. The minisodes read.
[0:20] Speaker 2: You your stuff. You send us emails, so we got
[0:24] Speaker 2: to read them.
[0:25] Speaker 1: You just keep doing it. Okay, you want to go first?
[0:27] Speaker 2: Yeat? Okay, all right, this one's called request for Items
[0:31] Speaker 2: Found in the Wall, and I have to show you
[0:33] Speaker 2: a photo halfway through. Okay, Hey, Karen and Georgia, you
[0:36] Speaker 2: guys asked for what did you find in the walls
[0:39] Speaker 2: on the rewind episode of ninety seven, and I immediately
[0:42] Speaker 2: knew I had one. A few years ago, I bought
[0:45] Speaker 2: a house built in nineteen twenty one just south of Dallas, Texas.
[0:48] Speaker 2: The man who owned it before me, Burrel the hell
[0:52] Speaker 2: Sacha great name, was basically a local legend. He started
[0:56] Speaker 2: the neighborhood association and had lived in the house forever
[0:59] Speaker 2: when he and his wife so to me, he was
[1:00] Speaker 2: ninety nine and she was ninety three, and they were
[1:03] Speaker 2: still walking up and down the stairs every day.
[1:05] Speaker 1: Yeah, they were.
[1:06] Speaker 2: Honestly, I'm convinced the Fountain of Youth is hidden somewhere
[1:09] Speaker 2: in that house.
[1:10] Speaker 1: It's on those stairs, yet stairs, get the stairs going
[1:13] Speaker 1: on every day.
[1:14] Speaker 2: The property itself is kind of wild. When the house
[1:16] Speaker 2: was originally sold in the nineteen twenties. It came with
[1:18] Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty acres. Now it's surrounded by neighborhoods,
[1:22] Speaker 2: but it still feels like this tiny, surviving piece of
[1:24] Speaker 2: old South Dallas history. People would randomly stop by because
[1:28] Speaker 2: Burle had lived there for so long. I'd be outside
[1:30] Speaker 2: watering the plants or hauling construction debris, and people would
[1:33] Speaker 2: look at me and go, you're not Burl. Anyway. I
[1:36] Speaker 2: started renovating the house while also working on a construction
[1:39] Speaker 2: job with insane hours. The entire place was torn apart,
[1:42] Speaker 2: plaster dust everywhere, walls open, exposed framing, so I was
[1:46] Speaker 2: basically living in a haunted construction zone. One night, I
[1:49] Speaker 2: came home super late and noticed something sitting on the
[1:51] Speaker 2: top shelf of my shoe rack. It was a doll,
[1:54] Speaker 2: a baby doll with wild hair, one eye half open,
[1:58] Speaker 2: one eye half clothes, wearing a pe ink shirt and
[2:00] Speaker 2: absolutely no pants. Apparently my electrician had found her inside
[2:05] Speaker 2: the walls earlier that day. We affectually named her Tricksy.
[2:09] Speaker 2: Now I can't just read the rest of this she
[2:10] Speaker 2: because it sounds so normal. You have to see what
[2:12] Speaker 2: this fucking doll looks like, okay, so here's the picture
[2:14] Speaker 2: of the doll. Oh no, it is like no arms.
[2:19] Speaker 2: Its face is just burnt to a crisp. It's just
[2:22] Speaker 2: it looks sacrificial. Yeah right, yeah, it's not a chill
[2:27] Speaker 2: little baby doll.
[2:28] Speaker 1: It is like, well, els, it's a baby doll wearing
[2:32] Speaker 1: no clothes in no arms is a bad combination.
[2:35] Speaker 2: Really, And it's someone cut all the hair off and
[2:37] Speaker 2: burned her face.
[2:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, she's which is pretty typical for leg dolls and
[2:41] Speaker 1: children whatever. But yeah, to if I were the person
[2:46] Speaker 1: and the electrician did that funny joke and put that
[2:48] Speaker 1: on my shoe rack, I'd be like, you'll never work
[2:50] Speaker 1: in this town again.
[2:51] Speaker 2: Well. Oh, from that point on, Trixie became part of
[2:55] Speaker 2: the construction crew. Every day somebody moved her to a
[2:59] Speaker 2: new location to scare or someone else. I'd hide her
[3:02] Speaker 2: somewhere before leaving for work. Nathan, the electrician would move
[3:05] Speaker 2: her again. Later you'd open a cabinet and Trixie would
[3:07] Speaker 2: be there and see, this isn't as scary without knowing
[3:11] Speaker 2: what the fucking doll looks like. Right right, turn around
[3:14] Speaker 2: in a dark hallway, Tricksy sitting in a wheelbarrow, tricksy.
[3:17] Speaker 2: Multiple contractors assured me the house was not cursed and
[3:20] Speaker 2: that the spirits were happy here, which honestly felt like
[3:23] Speaker 2: a very specific thing to hear from grown men covered
[3:26] Speaker 2: in plaster dust, Like why do you have to say,
[3:30] Speaker 2: how do you know about the spirits? Totally?
[3:32] Speaker 1: Is this the thing you do all the time.
[3:33] Speaker 2: At the very end of the renovation, we built out
[3:35] Speaker 2: a new master bedroom. One day I realized I hadn't
[3:38] Speaker 2: seen Trixy for a while. Turns out one of us
[3:40] Speaker 2: had left her sitting on some framing lumber, and the
[3:43] Speaker 2: framers unknowingly sealed her directly back into the walls of
[3:46] Speaker 2: the house, back where she fucking came from. So somewhere
[3:50] Speaker 2: inside my beautiful, restored nineteen twenty one home, Trixie is
[3:53] Speaker 2: still there, waiting patiently to absolutely terrorize another homeowner sixty
[3:58] Speaker 2: or seventy years from now when they decide to renovate,
[4:01] Speaker 2: Stay Sexy, don't get murdered by the old house and
[4:04] Speaker 2: spend way too much money restoring it, Laurel.
[4:08] Speaker 1: I mean, those framers need a good talking too, because
[4:12] Speaker 1: but that's a major decision to be like, we're putting
[4:14] Speaker 1: her back into the wall.
[4:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, but just the knowledge that she's there for the
[4:18] Speaker 2: rest of your time. You go to bed, good night, tricksy.
[4:21] Speaker 1: But like, if everyone is insisting that the vibes were
[4:24] Speaker 1: not bad, then I guess they weren't.
[4:28] Speaker 2: If the vibes the construction workers will tell you that
[4:31] Speaker 2: shit where chit keeps happening? For sure? Right? Yes, so
[4:34] Speaker 2: the vibes, yeah.
[4:36] Speaker 1: You would feel like they would be there, going.
[4:37] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, we were working a lot of houses. This
[4:40] Speaker 2: one we're not coming back.
[4:42] Speaker 1: Never seen a ladder fall like that before, so creepy. Okay, Well,
[4:49] Speaker 1: it's tis the season, so I'm going to read you
[4:51] Speaker 1: a graduation party story. Dad's ingrats on all month long.
[4:56] Speaker 2: Okay.
[4:57] Speaker 1: The subject line of this email is an unforgettable graduation
[4:59] Speaker 1: party and it says, hello, all this story has everything snakes,
[5:04] Speaker 1: things and walls and drunk kids. Sorry, it's all our stuff.
[5:09] Speaker 1: To set the scene, my family went to a family
[5:11] Speaker 1: friend's high school graduation party in two thousand and six.
[5:14] Speaker 1: We were some of the first people to arrive, only
[5:17] Speaker 1: to find the mom pretty frantic, but not in the
[5:19] Speaker 1: I'm not quite ready to host this party type of way.
[5:22] Speaker 1: You mean every single time I host parties? Why was
[5:26] Speaker 1: she frantic, you ask because the family's pet snake, Missus Alligator,
[5:30] Speaker 1: was missing.
[5:31] Speaker 2: Missus Alligator such a good name.
[5:35] Speaker 1: And then the next paragraph starts, Yes, the snake was
[5:37] Speaker 1: named Missus Alligator's so good. That's what happens when you
[5:41] Speaker 1: let an eight to ten year old boy get a
[5:43] Speaker 1: snake and name it. Oh so funny. It was unknown
[5:47] Speaker 1: how long Missus Alligator had been missing, but the lid
[5:52] Speaker 1: was off her tank and she was nowhere to be seen. No,
[5:55] Speaker 1: we were told not to spread this news.
[5:58] Speaker 2: Oh my god.
[6:00] Speaker 1: So good. It's the perfect little yeah variable to mix
[6:05] Speaker 1: in before this party.
[6:06] Speaker 2: Here's how it starts.
[6:07] Speaker 1: Is the snake in the punch bowl. Let's find out.
[6:12] Speaker 2: Snake in the toilet.
[6:16] Speaker 1: I told I know, I've told you this, But we
[6:19] Speaker 1: were driving down back Highway one and my friend Dave
[6:23] Speaker 1: and I had to stop because you know, there's nothing
[6:25] Speaker 1: ye in between gas stations. We had to stop it
[6:27] Speaker 1: and I do use one of those porta potties that
[6:29] Speaker 1: was just on and out look, oh my god. And
[6:31] Speaker 1: so I went in. I was like, oh, this is
[6:33] Speaker 1: the worst. I'm like stand outside, you know, like watch
[6:36] Speaker 1: it for me or whatever. The door shuts. It's like
[6:38] Speaker 1: almost pitch black in no Wow, and I'm just squatting
[6:41] Speaker 1: over and then my friend Dave goes up to the
[6:45] Speaker 1: crack of the door and goes big black snake. He
[6:48] Speaker 1: just whispered the phrase big black snake, and I started screaming.
[6:52] Speaker 1: I've never forgiven him.
[6:53] Speaker 2: I would have fucking squatted in the field.
[6:55] Speaker 1: I mean, or just right out of the parking lot. Sure, okay,
[6:59] Speaker 1: so snake variable worst case scenario. Don't spread it around,
[7:05] Speaker 1: but keep an eye out for her during the party
[7:08] Speaker 1: so she didn't leave the house, is what they were
[7:10] Speaker 1: asked to do. I was never clear on what to
[7:13] Speaker 1: do if I saw her, because I was definitely not
[7:15] Speaker 1: going to pick her up or go near her. Since
[7:17] Speaker 1: the party was catered by a Mexican restaurant, there was
[7:20] Speaker 1: also a frozen margerita machine set up for the adults.
[7:23] Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is awesome. Well, my dad decided
[7:27] Speaker 1: that there wasn't going to be any drunk kids on
[7:29] Speaker 1: his watch, so he posted himself next to the margherita
[7:32] Speaker 1: machine all night.
[7:34] Speaker 2: Mm hmm buzz kill.
[7:35] Speaker 1: Let's just say it's a good thing my dad isn't
[7:37] Speaker 1: in charge of any kind of security, because not only
[7:39] Speaker 1: were some kids able to sneak some margs. But my
[7:42] Speaker 1: dad got so drunk and on the way home my
[7:44] Speaker 1: mom had to pull over on the interstate twice for
[7:47] Speaker 1: him to be sick.
[7:48] Speaker 2: Oh God.
[7:49] Speaker 1: So he was just like glug glug Jimmy, buffetting as
[7:53] Speaker 1: he got his.
[7:54] Speaker 2: Arms, singing along with the margarita.
[7:55] Speaker 1: He passed his test so good. And I'll tell you
[7:58] Speaker 1: what congratuate relations. Yeah, you know how you get in
[8:04] Speaker 1: here with me? Sneaky sneaks because everyone loves a happy ending.
[8:08] Speaker 2: Missus.
[8:08] Speaker 1: Alligator was found a day or two after the party
[8:11] Speaker 1: drum roll please in the wall in the wall meeting
[8:17] Speaker 1: with Trixy. Technically she was curled up in an air
[8:20] Speaker 1: conditioning duct, but those are in walls. And then it's
[8:24] Speaker 1: this little winky emoticon. Stay sexy and just let the
[8:28] Speaker 1: kids get drunk, Jenny.
[8:31] Speaker 2: I have so many questions, like what kind of snake
[8:33] Speaker 2: was it? Could it have hurt someone at the party.
[8:36] Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think that they let like eight
[8:40] Speaker 1: to ten year old boys keep poisonous snakes. Fair enough,
[8:42] Speaker 1: that's for college guys that love metal.
[8:45] Speaker 2: Yeah that's true, don't you think? Yes? But like I
[8:48] Speaker 2: can imagine Vince had a party like he would have
[8:51] Speaker 2: screamed and ran. It's oh same, like if a spider
[8:55] Speaker 2: got out, I'd be like, I'm not coming to your
[8:56] Speaker 2: house again. Bye, good fuck good fuck yourself, goodbye and good.
[9:00] Speaker 1: Goodbye and good fuck yourself.
[9:03] Speaker 2: Pay stop. Okay, that's what's called. It's me. I'm the
[9:10] Speaker 2: Vatican City listener.
[9:11] Speaker 1: Hi. Oh my god, when say it? Whenna?
[9:19] Speaker 2: When it's not? Chick?
[9:20] Speaker 1: No, no, look Spanish, I told you we needed to
[9:24] Speaker 1: be ready for this. Don't say chaw it's too casual.
[9:27] Speaker 1: Be the pope. What if this is from the postozy squozy.
[9:32] Speaker 2: Okay, Hi, Karen and Chorgia. It's me. I'm the Vatican
[9:35] Speaker 2: City Listener, or at least one of them, and I'm
[9:37] Speaker 2: so excited to write this email. No, I'm a twenty
[9:42] Speaker 2: seven year old get it, got the we gotta get
[9:45] Speaker 2: the we got it the Italian hand Oops. Okay, I'm
[9:51] Speaker 2: a twenty seven year old American Murderino living in Rome.
[9:54] Speaker 2: I was literally getting ready to leave my apartment and
[9:57] Speaker 2: go to the Vatican Archives when I heard you to
[9:59] Speaker 2: say you have listen Vatican City. Hi. I've been listening
[10:02] Speaker 2: to you for years, since I was an undergrad. I
[10:04] Speaker 2: just completed a six month internship in the Vatican Museums.
[10:09] Speaker 2: This is exactly what we asked, was exactly what we wanted,
[10:11] Speaker 2: and I used to listen to your podcast from my
[10:13] Speaker 2: desk and museum while I worked. I'm an art historian
[10:17] Speaker 2: and a ceramic artist. I first came to Rome for
[10:20] Speaker 2: a ceramics residency and met my boyfriend and fell in
[10:23] Speaker 2: love with Rome and him. I came back to Rome
[10:25] Speaker 2: and earned my master's degree in art history and he
[10:28] Speaker 2: and I are very happily living together. Smiley face. He
[10:32] Speaker 2: is the absolute best and most supportive partner and a
[10:35] Speaker 2: very talented jeweler.
[10:36] Speaker 1: Oh that's a nice one.
[10:38] Speaker 2: We have been through a lot, and your podcast has
[10:40] Speaker 2: always brought me comfort, especially hearing your lovely American voices
[10:43] Speaker 2: when my brain was extra tired from Italian. I'm back
[10:47] Speaker 2: in Langdwig school now. Two years ago I was in
[10:49] Speaker 2: a near death motor vehicle accident. I was hit by
[10:53] Speaker 2: a motorcycle while crossing the street as a pedestrian in
[10:56] Speaker 2: the crosswalk. Guys look both ways always.
[11:01] Speaker 1: That's so awful. I know, what a scary, horrible thing.
[11:05] Speaker 2: Not something you'd expect, but god, I broke so many bones,
[11:09] Speaker 2: both legs, a rib, and my sacrum. I spent two
[11:12] Speaker 2: months in the hospital. For the first month I couldn't
[11:15] Speaker 2: even sit up, and I had to learn how to
[11:16] Speaker 2: walk again. Oh my God, And you better bet I
[11:19] Speaker 2: listened to a lot of my favorite murder in my
[11:22] Speaker 2: hospital room.
[11:23] Speaker 1: Oh you were been helped.
[11:28] Speaker 2: Wow, what a time you brought me a little bit
[11:30] Speaker 2: of normalcy and a lot of humor to an extraordinary
[11:33] Speaker 2: period in my life. And that made a big difference.
[11:36] Speaker 2: Heart emoji. And now I'm up and walking and wearing
[11:39] Speaker 2: stilettos on cobblestones and researching the Apostle like archives Apostolics,
[11:47] Speaker 2: I'm Jewish.
[11:47] Speaker 1: I don't care no excuse you've been sitting across from
[11:50] Speaker 1: me for ten years.
[11:51] Speaker 2: My specialty in art history is material culture Renaissance floors.
[11:56] Speaker 2: Now that I can walk on them again, I'm interested
[11:59] Speaker 2: in how the choice of the material was shaped by
[12:01] Speaker 2: a world with broadening trade networks, and how the floor
[12:04] Speaker 2: is quite literally dictate the movement of the viewer and
[12:07] Speaker 2: their interaction with space. Think arrows on an airport floor,
[12:10] Speaker 2: but Renaissance tiles and ancient marble.
[12:13] Speaker 1: That is so fucking cool, incredible. Also, I'm sure you'll
[12:18] Speaker 1: see them when you're there. But if you've ever seen
[12:21] Speaker 1: pictures of those mosaics that the floors used to be
[12:25] Speaker 1: in the ancient times, right, Like we went and saw
[12:28] Speaker 1: one once where just you're walking on this trend, like
[12:30] Speaker 1: a walkway over the top, and you're like, this was
[12:33] Speaker 1: just the floor about them, and it's like a whole
[12:35] Speaker 1: scene and animals and still there.
[12:38] Speaker 2: Hell yeah, crazy. I don't have any crazy secrets to share,
[12:41] Speaker 2: but archival research is pretty fun, right yeah, right, right
[12:45] Speaker 2: now I'm looking at receipts of payment for some historical tiles,
[12:48] Speaker 2: and whenever I see the price of something, I hear
[12:50] Speaker 2: your voices in my head. Go so in today's money,
[12:54] Speaker 2: receipts from ancient tiles, from ancient receipts, that's crazy. Savior receipts,
[13:00] Speaker 2: the Savior receipts. Please no, don't touch them. They're now
[13:02] Speaker 2: full of toxic.
[13:03] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's different.
[13:05] Speaker 2: If either of you are ever in Rome, against you
[13:07] Speaker 2: and I would love to give you a free bootleg
[13:09] Speaker 2: tour of the city or the Vatican museums or anywhere
[13:12] Speaker 2: you'd like. Really, I'm not an officially licensed tour guide,
[13:14] Speaker 2: but I do have a master's degree in Roman art
[13:16] Speaker 2: history and so many stories. Not good enough.
[13:19] Speaker 1: You need to get that tour guide license.
[13:21] Speaker 2: That's right. We won't go unless you have a license
[13:23] Speaker 2: around your neck.
[13:24] Speaker 1: We need to see your paperwork.
[13:26] Speaker 2: It says SSTGM and lots of love from Rome mac
[13:29] Speaker 2: she her mackenzie. PS. If anyone else writes to you
[13:33] Speaker 2: from Vatican City, I'd love to meet them. Oh my god,
[13:36] Speaker 2: make friends with your coworkers.
[13:38] Speaker 1: Oh my god, that's how you meet people.
[13:40] Speaker 2: Jesus, is that you? Hi?
[13:42] Speaker 1: Hey, what's up?
[13:44] Speaker 2: Thank you? Mackenzie mackenzie.
[13:46] Speaker 1: What an honor he would be in your ears while
[13:49] Speaker 1: you are going through and experiencing such a rich life.
[13:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, that brings us back to where the fuck are
[13:55] Speaker 2: you listening to us from? Yeah? That's also like not
[13:58] Speaker 2: just where I think, like what time your life?
[14:00] Speaker 1: What are you?
[14:01] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[14:01] Speaker 1: Because we were like, what are you doing when we're listening?
[14:03] Speaker 2: And we're just like, what's the season of your life
[14:06] Speaker 2: look like while you're listening to us? Are you okay? Yeah?
[14:10] Speaker 1: Like?
[14:10] Speaker 2: Are you better? Are you?
[14:11] Speaker 1: Are you getting better? Can we do any same thing
[14:14] Speaker 1: we can do?
[14:14] Speaker 2: Can we bring you some soup?
[14:17] Speaker 1: We can bring you audio soup for the soul. It's
[14:20] Speaker 1: not chicken noodle. There you go, because there's an ip
[14:23] Speaker 1: play issue that was just such a full rich I
[14:26] Speaker 1: was just like, eugh, yeah, yes, totally very exciting. Goodbye.
[14:33] Speaker 2: Okay.
[14:34] Speaker 1: So this subject line of this email is hero Grandma,
[14:38] Speaker 1: and then in parentheses it says gold mine of cute
[14:41] Speaker 1: old lady names, and it says hey ladies, in honor
[14:44] Speaker 1: of my mom Karen's birthday, Karen with a sea I
[14:48] Speaker 1: never see that. I'm writing to tell you about the
[14:50] Speaker 1: time my grandma Eva saved her family from a fire
[14:54] Speaker 1: in the winter of nineteen thirty nine. My great grandparents
[14:57] Speaker 1: Sid and Gladys. We're busy running a sausage business and
[15:00] Speaker 1: raising their nine children in a small wood frame house
[15:04] Speaker 1: in rural Kentucky Wow. That morning, it was snowing, so
[15:08] Speaker 1: great Grandpa Sid had adjusted the damper on the coal
[15:12] Speaker 1: burning stove to keep the housewarm and instructed the kids
[15:15] Speaker 1: to leave it alone for the day. He and Gladys
[15:17] Speaker 1: packed up the horse and buggy and headed into town
[15:20] Speaker 1: to sell their sausages, leaving my fifteen year old grandma
[15:23] Speaker 1: Eva May in charge of her three younger sisters, Anna
[15:26] Speaker 1: Lie age ten, Mary Jane age three, and i'ma nell
[15:31] Speaker 1: age two great names.
[15:32] Speaker 2: I mean.
[15:33] Speaker 1: The girls spread out to enjoy their morning, little ones
[15:36] Speaker 1: playing in the bedroom and the older girls in the
[15:38] Speaker 1: main room. It wasn't long before Eva smelled smoke, and
[15:41] Speaker 1: just as she looked up, the ceiling erupted in flames.
[15:44] Speaker 1: The coal stove had caught fire, and the flames had
[15:47] Speaker 1: traveled straight up the flu above them. The whole attic
[15:50] Speaker 1: was already burning, and within minutes the rest of the
[15:54] Speaker 1: house was too Oh my god. Eva did what any
[15:56] Speaker 1: older sister would do and use this opportunity to physic
[16:00] Speaker 1: pick up ten year old Anna and throw her out
[16:02] Speaker 1: the front door into the snow.
[16:05] Speaker 2: Ah she's been waiting.
[16:07] Speaker 1: Finally, finally, justified. Mary Jane got the same treatment and
[16:11] Speaker 1: was efficiently ousted from the now smoke filled house. But
[16:15] Speaker 1: when Eva ran back into the bedroom for little Nell,
[16:17] Speaker 1: she was nowhere to be found. She frantically searched Nell's
[16:22] Speaker 1: usual hiding spots with no luck, until through the smoke
[16:24] Speaker 1: she spotted two little feet under the bed. She dropped
[16:28] Speaker 1: to the floor, yanked Nell out by the ankle, and
[16:30] Speaker 1: got out of the house just in time. Even and
[16:32] Speaker 1: Nell both sustained some burns, but they were all alive
[16:35] Speaker 1: and together.
[16:36] Speaker 2: Oh my god, she was like hiding under.
[16:38] Speaker 1: The bed, yeah, trying to get away from the badge
[16:41] Speaker 1: so little. Meanwhile in the buggy, Sid and Gladys were
[16:45] Speaker 1: getting close to town when they passed a neighbor on
[16:47] Speaker 1: the road. Sid waved and hollered a quick good morning,
[16:50] Speaker 1: and the neighbor yelled back, turn around, Sid, your house
[16:53] Speaker 1: is on fire. Someone in town must have had a
[16:56] Speaker 1: telephone because the news of the fire had beat them there.
[17:00] Speaker 1: You know what the land speed record is for horse
[17:02] Speaker 1: and buggy, But I bet they would have come close
[17:03] Speaker 1: to it that day, high tailing it back home, wondering
[17:06] Speaker 1: all the time if they'd just lost their girls. Oh,
[17:10] Speaker 1: they reunited and couldn't have cared less about the house,
[17:12] Speaker 1: knowing how that day might have gone, and the community
[17:15] Speaker 1: rallied around them to get them through that winter.
[17:18] Speaker 2: Oh, oh my god.
[17:20] Speaker 1: Oh we lost Eva and my three other grandparents before
[17:24] Speaker 1: I was born. But I've always loved the story of
[17:26] Speaker 1: how she saved her sisters. Oh I can't the three
[17:32] Speaker 1: amazing women who loved me like grandmother's in her place.
[17:35] Speaker 1: Oh thank you. The idea of your sister picking you
[17:39] Speaker 1: up and throwing you out the door to save your life.
[17:43] Speaker 1: It's so so older sister, I love it. Thank you
[17:45] Speaker 1: for all you do. And happy birthday, mom, Stay sexy
[17:49] Speaker 1: and always check under the bed.
[17:50] Speaker 2: Kelsey, Oh my god, what a like that story could
[17:54] Speaker 2: have gone terribly and she just fucking saved the day.
[18:00] Speaker 2: Dabbing your tears.
[18:00] Speaker 1: I could have sworn there was a box of clean
[18:02] Speaker 1: next there. Can I have one?
[18:06] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[18:06] Speaker 1: Fully saving the day?
[18:08] Speaker 2: Like, sorry, talk so much shit on big sisters.
[18:11] Speaker 1: I know you're pretty good sometimes.
[18:13] Speaker 2: So I'm sure my sister's saved my life a couple
[18:14] Speaker 2: of times. I just don't remember.
[18:16] Speaker 1: I know for a fact has saved mine.
[18:21] Speaker 2: Okay, okay, it's also Pride Month. Oh so it says
[18:26] Speaker 2: I can't be the only one a Pride Month story? Yes, okay, hello, ladies,
[18:32] Speaker 2: love you all, love the podcast, love the animals. Let's
[18:34] Speaker 2: get into it. When I left college in Michigan to
[18:37] Speaker 2: move to LA and live the big dream, I found
[18:39] Speaker 2: out the big dream was living on a couch a
[18:41] Speaker 2: friend kindly put in his kitchen because another friend had
[18:44] Speaker 2: already taken the one in the living room. Like, what
[18:46] Speaker 2: a generous friend to you, Like, I don't have room
[18:49] Speaker 2: in the living room. But I'll do anything to help you.
[18:51] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll go ahead and put a couch in this kitchen.
[18:53] Speaker 2: Oh nice.
[18:54] Speaker 1: That's that's the idea. It's just like, help as many
[18:57] Speaker 1: people as you can in La. That's the advice. I'd
[19:00] Speaker 1: total help as many people as you can, because you
[19:02] Speaker 1: have no idea where anybody's gonna go.
[19:04] Speaker 2: Right, But to also do it because you're a nice person,
[19:06] Speaker 2: not just because you want to get somewhere. Oh true, true,
[19:09] Speaker 2: But but you're not implying otherwise. So I don't mean
[19:12] Speaker 2: to say that.
[19:12] Speaker 1: Well yeah, just almost like you could be a nice
[19:15] Speaker 1: person but still be like, but I don't have enough couches.
[19:17] Speaker 1: It's like, but you do, yes, okay.
[19:20] Speaker 2: I got a job at a warehouse nearby so I
[19:22] Speaker 2: could walk to and from work. In a city like La,
[19:24] Speaker 2: if you don't have a car, you do a lot
[19:26] Speaker 2: of walking. At night. On my way home from work,
[19:29] Speaker 2: I would often find myself walking past a woman walking alone.
[19:32] Speaker 2: I'm a six to two black gay man, and I
[19:35] Speaker 2: can see how that would be a've bit intimidating, especially
[19:37] Speaker 2: knowing how men treat women in this world. So I
[19:40] Speaker 2: did the only thing I could think of to show
[19:42] Speaker 2: her I was a good guy. I put on my
[19:44] Speaker 2: best Naomi Campbell runway walk. I even tucked my non
[19:48] Speaker 2: existent hair behind my ear to really sell the I
[19:51] Speaker 2: mean you no harm message, because who would ever hurt
[19:54] Speaker 2: anyone if the sidewalk is their runway? Yes, su fully
[19:57] Speaker 2: creepy men won't steal this idea and use this game
[20:00] Speaker 2: power for evil, But just in case, ladies, just be
[20:03] Speaker 2: skeptical of all men walking alone at night. Anyways, I
[20:06] Speaker 2: just had to share it because I know I can't
[20:08] Speaker 2: be the only one who's done this. I'm pretty sure
[20:11] Speaker 2: this is common gay knowledge. I love you guys in
[20:13] Speaker 2: this podcast so much. It's such a comforting part of
[20:16] Speaker 2: my weekly routine. You guys are everything. Anyways, stay sexy
[20:21] Speaker 2: and do the Naomi Campbell walk, happy pride. Okay, okay,
[20:26] Speaker 2: I love that, just to be like it's like, I'm
[20:28] Speaker 2: not a threat. Let me show you my my walk.
[20:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
[20:32] Speaker 2: I love that.
[20:33] Speaker 1: I saw someone say somewhere on social media someone said
[20:36] Speaker 1: they just start singing show too. Yes, I mean whatever
[20:40] Speaker 1: you can do.
[20:41] Speaker 2: I soon the one that were like they're like, hey,
[20:42] Speaker 2: I love your dress, and the girls like fuck you,
[20:44] Speaker 2: and he goes no, no, I'm sorry. I meant I
[20:46] Speaker 2: love your dress.
[20:49] Speaker 1: That's so nice. Oh that's so funny. It must be
[20:52] Speaker 1: very satisfying to suddenly just be like, yeah, throwing your
[20:56] Speaker 1: hips as I just like, oh God, okay. The subject
[21:02] Speaker 1: line of this email is Doppelganger Grandpa and it says
[21:05] Speaker 1: Hello Karen, Georgia and pets. Every Thanksgiving, my family would
[21:10] Speaker 1: make the ten hour drive from the middle of Wisconsin
[21:12] Speaker 1: to Florence, Kentucky, to visit my paternal grandparents. My dad
[21:16] Speaker 1: drove the entire way because that's just how he is.
[21:19] Speaker 1: He would always leave Wednesday in the middle of the
[21:21] Speaker 1: afternoon because he had to work. Typically we would get
[21:24] Speaker 1: there around one or two in the morning. My grandparents
[21:27] Speaker 1: lived in a cookie cutter neighborhood where every other house
[21:29] Speaker 1: looked exactly the same, so when we pulled into the
[21:32] Speaker 1: driveway with the outside light on, we didn't question it.
[21:35] Speaker 1: We knew the routine after years of making the drive
[21:38] Speaker 1: and started unpacking the car. My brother, who was ten,
[21:41] Speaker 1: grabbed his suitcase and went right inside and down to
[21:43] Speaker 1: the basement where us kids always slept. My grandpa came
[21:46] Speaker 1: out in his pajamas and watched us unpacking the car.
[21:49] Speaker 1: Top carrier. I remember thinking Grandpa looks taller, but continued
[21:52] Speaker 1: to grab suitcases and trash from the long journey. It
[21:56] Speaker 1: wasn't until the man said, in a thick Southern accent,
[21:58] Speaker 1: who are you people? We froze, baffled by our mistake
[22:04] Speaker 1: and started throwing shit back into the car, apologizing perfusely.
[22:08] Speaker 1: My dad hadn't even noticed this man was not his
[22:11] Speaker 1: dad at two in the morning. He looked identical to
[22:14] Speaker 1: my grandpa except for height, down to the way he stood,
[22:17] Speaker 1: his sleepy expression, mustache, balding gray hair, big belly, and
[22:21] Speaker 1: even that thick Southern accent. Oh my god, my sister
[22:25] Speaker 1: whispered to my mom. Brett went inside so good. My
[22:30] Speaker 1: mom almost became a trash parent and told her to
[22:32] Speaker 1: go get him, but remembered she was the adult. She
[22:36] Speaker 1: walked up to the man, quickly explained and went into
[22:38] Speaker 1: the house. She whispered to him down the stairs to
[22:41] Speaker 1: the basement. We are at the wrong house. And we
[22:44] Speaker 1: heard the thuds of his suitcase quickly coming off.
[22:48] Speaker 2: Like standing down everything, like what the this is weird?
[22:51] Speaker 1: Itmells weird down here. We didn't even bother to buckle
[22:54] Speaker 1: up as we backed out and drove our and drove
[22:57] Speaker 1: over two doors to my grandma. We laughed about it
[23:01] Speaker 1: all Thanksgiving break. My grandparents told us later that those
[23:04] Speaker 1: people were also expecting their family late that same night
[23:07] Speaker 1: and had just moved in a few weeks ago.
[23:09] Speaker 2: Oh wow.
[23:10] Speaker 1: We never talked to the people during the years we
[23:12] Speaker 1: went to Kentucky for Thanksgiving until summer of twenty twenty four,
[23:17] Speaker 1: when my grandpa passed away. We were at the entrance
[23:19] Speaker 1: of the church greeting people at the funeral when an
[23:22] Speaker 1: elderly gentleman introduced himself and his wife to us. We
[23:25] Speaker 1: quickly learned that it was my grandpa's doppelganger. We exchanged
[23:28] Speaker 1: the story from our different perspectives and learned that they too,
[23:31] Speaker 1: tell this story all the time. My best friend Katrina
[23:35] Speaker 1: and I saw you at the second show in Chicago
[23:37] Speaker 1: in November. We had an amazing time. Thank you for
[23:40] Speaker 1: never failing to make us laugh SSDGM Sarah.
[23:44] Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's hilarious.
[23:46] Speaker 1: That is such a great legendary family story of like
[23:51] Speaker 1: such a great example and it's both directions exactly.
[23:53] Speaker 2: That's like the best part is, like how do they
[23:55] Speaker 2: tell the story?
[23:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so good, so good.
[23:58] Speaker 2: Do you have a story from your perspective, send it
