## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: Well, some are very much arriving in South Africa. The
[0:02] Speaker 1: Weather Service warning of storms, a heat wave and fire
[0:06] Speaker 1: danger as well. So let's find out what's happening with
[0:08] Speaker 1: Lekhlohonolo Tobele, forecaster at the SA Weather Service. Lekhlohonolo, good
[0:13] Speaker 1: afternoon to you. Thanks very much for your time. So
[0:16] Speaker 1: tell us about the warnings that have been issued.
[0:19] Speaker 2: I'm India and thanks for the invitation. Severe thunderstorms are
[0:23] Speaker 2: definitely expected over the northwest into the northern part of
[0:26] Speaker 2: the Northern Cape as well. We have cover... the northwestern
[0:29] Speaker 2: parts of the three states, just around Belkom. But there
[0:32] Speaker 2: is still a warning for severe thunderstorms for the central
[0:35] Speaker 2: and the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. But if you'll be
[0:38] Speaker 2: over the southern parts of the Northern Cape into the
[0:41] Speaker 2: northeastern parts of the Western Cape, just expect some damaging winds.
[0:45] Speaker 2: So do remember that with severe thunderstorms, we're expecting heavy
[0:48] Speaker 2: downpours that may lead to localized flooding, a possibility of
[0:51] Speaker 2: damaging winds, as well as a possibility of hail and
[0:53] Speaker 2: excessive lightning into the afternoon. So please, please take caution.
[0:57] Speaker 2: And this is expected for today, but for tomorrow, the
[1:00] Speaker 2: storms are expected to move into the western parts of Limpopo.
[1:04] Speaker 2: But there is still a 30 to 60 percent chance
[1:07] Speaker 2: of thunderstorms still expected for the central interior of the country.
[1:10] Speaker 2: This will cover the northwest, the Free State, into KwaZulu-Natal
[1:14] Speaker 2: and the Eastern Cape.
[1:16] Speaker 1: Okay, then tell us about hot temperatures, heat waves across
[1:20] Speaker 1: parts of the country.
[1:21] Speaker 2: Definitely. And the heat wave is expected across the northwestern
[1:25] Speaker 2: part of KwaZulu-Natal. And this is expected to last up
[1:29] Speaker 2: until at least tomorrow. And we're still monitoring the situation.
[1:33] Speaker 2: Temperature is expected to be warm, especially for the central
[1:36] Speaker 2: and the eastern part of the country, as opposed to
[1:38] Speaker 2: what we had in September last year. And we're expecting
[1:43] Speaker 2: that warm-up to be across most parts of the country,
[1:46] Speaker 2: especially the central and the eastern parts. And following the
[1:49] Speaker 2: warning of the El Nino conditions that are expected, sub-seasonal
[1:52] Speaker 2: forecast shows the temperatures are expected to warm up in
[1:55] Speaker 2: the next coming weeks. So most of the rain is
[1:58] Speaker 2: expected across most parts of the eastern Cape. That's where
[2:01] Speaker 2: it looked like it would be above normal for the
[2:04] Speaker 2: remainder of the month into the central parts. But the
[2:06] Speaker 2: sub-seasonal forecast will suggest that We're expecting warmer temperatures. And
[2:11] Speaker 2: if you are in Gauteng, you will attest to the
[2:13] Speaker 2: warmth that is outside.
[2:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. And of course, concerns in some areas about
[2:18] Speaker 1: potential fire hazards as well.
[2:21] Speaker 2: I'm glad you touched on the fault fires because we're
[2:23] Speaker 2: expecting the western interior to experience that due to highly
[2:29] Speaker 2: conducive conditions that may lead to fault fires, especially if
[2:32] Speaker 2: we have damaging winds like the weather warning that we
[2:35] Speaker 2: sent out for the southern part of the Northern Cape.
[2:38] Speaker 2: that obviously plays a part in increasing the chances of
[2:41] Speaker 2: felt fires over the area. So please take caution. And
[2:44] Speaker 2: if you see any unnecessary fires, report them to your
[2:47] Speaker 2: necessary authorities.
[2:49] Speaker 1: Liklo Honolo, thank you so much. Liklo Honolo, Tobela Forecaster
[2:52] Speaker 1: at the SA Weather Service.
