[0:00] Speaker 1: A suspect linked to a deadly shooting in Katlahong on
[0:02] Speaker 1: the East Rand appearing in court in the Palm Ridge
[0:05] Speaker 1: Magistrates Court today. Two men dying at the scene on
[0:08] Speaker 1: Tuesday night. Two others succumbing to injuries in hospital after
[0:11] Speaker 1: a gunman opened fire on a crowd of mourners. Corinda Jagmohan,
[0:15] Speaker 1: EWN reporter on that story for us. Corinda, good afternoon
[0:18] Speaker 1: to you. It sounds like quite a lot of activity
[0:21] Speaker 1: there at this court appearance today.
[0:22] Speaker 2: Certainly good afternoon, Mandy. Yes, there have been members of
[0:27] Speaker 2: the ANC Youth League members as well as members of
[0:29] Speaker 2: the EFF coming to protest outside the court. They were
[0:32] Speaker 2: also inside the court. They had, you know, the gallery
[0:35] Speaker 2: packed to the capacity. And, you know, we're really staring
[0:39] Speaker 2: down at the suspect, furious about what has happened, the
[0:42] Speaker 2: death of four people.
[0:44] Speaker 1: Tell us about what we know about the suspect and
[0:47] Speaker 1: the shooting.
[0:48] Speaker 2: So what we know so far is he's now facing
[0:50] Speaker 2: nine criminal charges. It's the four counts of murder, three
[0:53] Speaker 2: counts of attempted murder, and two counts regarding how he
[0:56] Speaker 2: handled his firearms. We know that that was his firearm.
[0:59] Speaker 2: He's 46 years old, and the state alleges that this
[1:02] Speaker 2: was a premeditated incident. That's why they're going for a
[1:05] Speaker 2: Schedule 6 offense. But on the ground, he has been
[1:09] Speaker 2: linked now on the record at least to two political parties.
[1:13] Speaker 2: Today we saw the EFF Gauteng chairperson saying, Nkuleleko Dunga,
[1:17] Speaker 2: and he confirmed that back in 2016 to about 2021,
[1:20] Speaker 2: Fani Sibeko was a PR councillor for the EFF. But
[1:27] Speaker 2: after that, he parted ways with the party, with Dunga
[1:30] Speaker 2: saying that he no longer has political affiliation with the EFF.
[1:33] Speaker 2: He has also been seen, Sibeko has also been seen
[1:36] Speaker 2: in regalia for the Afrika Maibuye party. And there are
[1:40] Speaker 2: allegations that he's currently a councillor candidate. Afrika Maaiboe has
[1:44] Speaker 2: denied that he's a councillor candidate for the party, but
[1:46] Speaker 2: they are investigating whether he's a member or not. Nonetheless,
[1:50] Speaker 2: the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team are investigating whether this
[1:53] Speaker 2: is politically motivated, given we're just weeks away from the election.

[2:05] Speaker 1: And this is always the concern when you get close
[2:07] Speaker 1: to a local government election, the politically motivated shootings that
[2:11] Speaker 1: we're seeing over the next couple of weeks, I think
[2:14] Speaker 1: will be very concerning.
