[0:00] Speaker 1: The National Police Commissioner, Fani Masimola, will return to work
[0:03] Speaker 1: on Monday. Remember, he was on special leave because of
[0:08] Speaker 1: the charges against him, which have subsequently been dropped. Corinda Jagmohan,
[0:12] Speaker 1: EWN reporter on that story for us. Corinda, good afternoon
[0:15] Speaker 1: to you. Tell us about this decision for Fani Masimola
[0:18] Speaker 1: to go back to work.
[0:20] Speaker 2: Good afternoon, Mandy. Well, it's been about a month in
[0:22] Speaker 2: the making because the charges, the criminal charges against Masimola
[0:26] Speaker 2: were withdrawn on the 22nd of September. He was charged
[0:30] Speaker 2: with contravening the Public Finance Management Act in relation to
[0:34] Speaker 2: Vusi Mbuensi Katmatlala's tender at the police. So essentially, the
[0:37] Speaker 2: claim was that he failed in his duties as the
[0:40] Speaker 2: oversight officer to prevent this fraud from happening. But the
[0:44] Speaker 2: charges were withdrawn on the 22nd of September. So it's
[0:47] Speaker 2: taken about a month for the president to consider the
[0:50] Speaker 2: next steps. And this is, of course, reinstating him. He
[0:52] Speaker 2: was placed on precautionary suspension in April when he first
[0:57] Speaker 2: faced those charges. So he'll get back to the office
[1:00] Speaker 2: on Monday.
[1:01] Speaker 1: And what are the police saying about this?
[1:04] Speaker 2: Well, the police, the acting police minister, of course, has
[1:07] Speaker 2: welcomed this. And this means that the acting police commissioner,
[1:12] Speaker 2: Buleng Dimpane, will then, of course, go back to her
[1:14] Speaker 2: role as the chief financial officer. But also, as we
[1:17] Speaker 2: talk about police matters, Mandy, you know, this is quite
[1:20] Speaker 2: a significant moment in the SAPS because we've had somewhat
[1:24] Speaker 2: of a troubled history with police commissioners in the past.
[1:27] Speaker 2: Almost every single person that has been in that position
[1:30] Speaker 2: has faced some accusations, and very few have actually finished
[1:34] Speaker 2: their term in office. So Masimola's term finishes next year
[1:38] Speaker 2: in March. That will be five years in office. And
[1:41] Speaker 2: then with him then returning to the office, you know,
[1:43] Speaker 2: the cloud of criminal charges now away from him, it
[1:46] Speaker 2: means that we might see a police commissioner actually finishing
[1:50] Speaker 2: his term with somewhat of a clean slate. But Mandy,
[1:53] Speaker 2: at the same time, he is still under scrutiny. A
[1:56] Speaker 2: lot of the allegations we see at the Madlanga Commission
[1:58] Speaker 2: relate to alleged criminal infiltration of the police that happened,
[2:02] Speaker 2: not just before his term in office, but also during,
[2:05] Speaker 2: and that's specifically regarding the PKTT disbandment order, which he
[2:09] Speaker 2: said he had to follow because it was a request
[2:11] Speaker 2: from the police minister at the time. So a lot
[2:13] Speaker 2: of discussions about maybe the year that was for Massey
[2:17] Speaker 2: Mola and how it's changed the trajectory of the police service.
[2:20] Speaker 2: Of course, as he enters into the police office, he
[2:22] Speaker 2: has a lot of work on his desk, because the
[2:25] Speaker 2: police now, you know, the country looking at them to
[2:27] Speaker 2: ensure that they get their office in order following the
[2:31] Speaker 2: allegations we've seen.
[2:32] Speaker 1: Corinda, thank you very much. Corinda Jagmohan, EWN reporter, giving
[2:36] Speaker 1: us an update there on the National Police Commissioner, Fani Masimola,
[2:39] Speaker 1: returning to office.
