[0:00] Speaker 1: Sports rap sports rap with tolukele mganga tolukele mganga joining
[0:06] Speaker 1: us in the studio to speak about the world of
[0:09] Speaker 1: sport this weekend tolukele.
[0:11] Speaker 2: Welcome thank you mandy we had a voice.
[0:13] Speaker 1: Note somebody asked us about what the safa buses do
[0:17] Speaker 1: you know what happened to the safa buses.
[0:18] Speaker 2: No okay let's talk about the sports but maybe they
[0:22] Speaker 2: passed by safa houses or something It's a busy football
[0:26] Speaker 2: and cricket weekend. Let's start with the Bedway Premiership. We
[0:29] Speaker 2: know that Kaiser Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Durban
[0:33] Speaker 2: City won't be involved in Bedway Premiership games because they've
[0:37] Speaker 2: got CAF Champions League and CAF Conference Cup commitments. So
[0:41] Speaker 2: the fans of those four teams won't be able to
[0:44] Speaker 2: watch them this weekend.
[0:45] Speaker 3: Then in the Premier League... Hey, Mandy, let's discuss the
[0:48] Speaker 3: Premier League. Let's discuss. How's your team doing? Not so well.
[0:52] Speaker 2: How's my team doing?
[0:53] Speaker 3: Not so well.
[0:53] Speaker 1: Not so well.
[0:55] Speaker 3: Godspeed to everybody in that league.
[0:57] Speaker 2: Of course, Manchester City, they're still unbeaten despite the defeat
[1:00] Speaker 2: to PSG in the league. I think with Manchester United...
[1:05] Speaker 2: It's so awkward because there's the quality in the team. Yes,
[1:09] Speaker 2: we did great by finishing in the top three last season.
[1:12] Speaker 2: And you would have thought that because the games are
[1:15] Speaker 2: so many now, they would have at least bought like
[1:17] Speaker 2: six to seven players. And especially when you see how
[1:19] Speaker 2: much investment Chelsea had in their team and how much
[1:22] Speaker 2: investment City did in their team. You thought that the
[1:24] Speaker 2: other club for Manchester would also be following that line.
[1:27] Speaker 2: But now that the players are also hitting out and saying,
[1:30] Speaker 2: we're only in October and we can see that we're
[1:32] Speaker 2: struggling in terms of the squad depth.
[1:35] Speaker 3: Very outspoken, huh? Very, very outspoken.
[1:37] Speaker 2: But I also think in the change room, the players
[1:39] Speaker 2: are very open and honest with each other about that.
[1:41] Speaker 2: So when it came a chance for Alessandro Martinez to
[1:44] Speaker 2: make a public statement, he was like, I have one
[1:46] Speaker 2: chance and I have to make sure I'm very clear
[1:48] Speaker 2: about what the feeling is. But also I think there's
[1:51] Speaker 2: limitations to how much Michael Carrick can truly work with
[1:55] Speaker 2: this team today. But the other thing is, even if
[1:57] Speaker 2: you fire him now, where do you go? Because the
[2:00] Speaker 2: top managers have already got jobs. And even if you're saying, okay,
[2:04] Speaker 2: we want to build long-term success, are you backing Michael
[2:08] Speaker 2: Carrick and are you believing that he can go toe-to-toe
[2:10] Speaker 2: and possibly maybe you wait a year or two and
[2:12] Speaker 2: maybe he can deliver silverware? But in the meantime, are
[2:15] Speaker 2: you willing to wait it out and deal with the
[2:18] Speaker 2: struggles and the winless runs while you wait for something
[2:21] Speaker 2: to happen?
[2:22] Speaker 3: Betway Prim and CAF this weekend?
[2:24] Speaker 2: Yes, with Mamelodi Sundowns, of course, we know that the
[2:26] Speaker 2: CAF Champions League champions at the moment. Orlando Pirates last
[2:30] Speaker 2: season fell in the second round of qualifying. So Coach
[2:33] Speaker 2: Adeslamadu saying ahead of their game against African Stars, it's
[2:36] Speaker 2: very important that they get the first leg away win,
[2:39] Speaker 2: then make sure that they build on it in the
[2:41] Speaker 2: second leg so they can get to the group stages.
[2:43] Speaker 2: They've said for them this season, it is a target
[2:45] Speaker 2: to make sure that they're winning. a second continental title.
[2:48] Speaker 2: The Confed Cup, Kaiser Chiefs will be desperate for a
[2:50] Speaker 2: victory there. So they can also go into the group stages.
[2:53] Speaker 2: So this is the qualifier for the group stages. The
[2:55] Speaker 2: first leg is this weekend, second leg next weekend. And
[2:59] Speaker 2: of course, we know at the end of the month,
[3:01] Speaker 2: the big game, the one that everybody's waiting for, they've
[3:03] Speaker 2: already started mudslinging. The game is sold out, the Soweto Derby.
[3:08] Speaker 2: So we have two weeks to prepare for that game
[3:11] Speaker 2: while both these teams are involved in African action.
[3:13] Speaker 3: Proteus, Can you explain to me.
[3:16] Speaker 2: Why it starts on a Sunday? Everybody keeps on... I
[3:19] Speaker 2: don't know.
[3:20] Speaker 3: Why does it start on a Sunday? And why is
[3:21] Speaker 3: the other one starting on a Tuesday? I have no.
[3:25] Speaker 2: CSA haven't exactly outlined and explained why the games are
[3:29] Speaker 2: starting on such odd days.
[3:31] Speaker 3: And you would think that... There must be a logical
[3:33] Speaker 3: reason for it.
[3:34] Speaker 2: Maybe for them, they feel like people will be able
[3:36] Speaker 2: to go into the stadiums easier on a Sunday.
[3:38] Speaker 3: I don't know why. Because obviously.
[3:40] Speaker 2: You'd want all eyes on you and especially it's summer.
[3:42] Speaker 3: It's hot. People want to be outside. Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
[3:45] Speaker 1: Especially when test matches only last three to four days.
[3:49] Speaker 2: And I was in Durban this past weekend. Even the
[3:52] Speaker 2: Saturday and Sunday, the Durban people did not show up
[3:54] Speaker 2: to the test match.
[3:55] Speaker 3: So I don't know if on their side, they were
[3:58] Speaker 3: worried about the riots, apparently.
[3:59] Speaker 2: Uh, Mandy, we do know about the rise heading into,
[4:01] Speaker 2: remember the fixtures are released way ahead of time.
[4:04] Speaker 3: So they have to look at it.
[4:06] Speaker 2: If they starting to speak financials and say, okay, because
[4:09] Speaker 2: remember before we, we had the games against Australia and
[4:12] Speaker 2: England to come, there was the whole argument from, from
[4:15] Speaker 2: test cricket to say, it's not making enough money because
[4:18] Speaker 2: supporters aren't coming to the games. This unfortunately adds to it,
[4:22] Speaker 2: but also you can't as an association say it's not
[4:25] Speaker 2: making enough money. If you're not willing to work financially,
[4:27] Speaker 2: with the social calendar of a lot of the people
[4:29] Speaker 2: that want to go to these games. And I think Durban, unfortunately,
[4:33] Speaker 2: the criticism from day one was there. Hopefully, Kweka does
[4:37] Speaker 2: come out with their numbers. Of course, we know that
[4:39] Speaker 2: Jobek and Pretoria are always ready for cricket games. Hopefully,
[4:41] Speaker 2: those will also be sold out. But CSA have to
[4:44] Speaker 2: start a game on a Friday. It just makes sense.
[4:46] Speaker 2: So we have the whole weekend in front of our
[4:48] Speaker 2: couches rather than waiting until Sunday, where a lot of
[4:51] Speaker 2: people are already starting to think about the rest of
[4:53] Speaker 2: the work week.
[4:54] Speaker 3: Very interesting. And the actual team itself, one change?
[4:58] Speaker 2: It's a change to the 17-man squad. They haven't finalized
[5:01] Speaker 2: the playing 11.
[5:03] Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't understand that.
[5:05] Speaker 2: So because Shukri Conrad does name his squad ahead of
[5:08] Speaker 2: time and then the day before, well, depending on whether
[5:10] Speaker 2: or not Timbapavuma will have he's 11 already sorted out
[5:13] Speaker 2: because he did that with the first test where he
[5:15] Speaker 2: went into his final pre-match press conference having already decided.
[5:19] Speaker 2: That's where the changes will be announced. We are expecting
[5:22] Speaker 2: Gahisor Abada back now that he's back from his hamstring injury.
[5:25] Speaker 2: We know that Ryan Rickleton will now take over the
[5:28] Speaker 2: wicket-keeping duties, taking over from Kyle Varena, Matthew Britska having
[5:32] Speaker 2: impressed in the ODI series against Australia. He probably will
[5:36] Speaker 2: start that second test against the Baggy Greens. So those
[5:39] Speaker 2: are the changes that are being discussed. But Shukru Conrad
[5:42] Speaker 2: and Tamar Pavuma are very honest with each other to say,
[5:45] Speaker 2: having had a disappointing showing in Durban, there's going to
[5:47] Speaker 2: be very realistic conversations about who they think can get
[5:51] Speaker 2: them a win that will level the three-match series.
[5:54] Speaker 3: Now rugby this weekend, it's the Investec.
[5:57] Speaker 2: It's the Champions Cup.
[5:58] Speaker 3: Champions Cup.
[5:59] Speaker 2: Yes.
[6:00] Speaker 3: I never get this right. This is different to the URC.
[6:03] Speaker 2: Yes. The issue is also, there's so many rugby competitions
[6:07] Speaker 2: that are happening at the same time, while there's also
[6:09] Speaker 2: international teams that are playing at the same time. Because
[6:12] Speaker 2: we know that Down Under, it's the second Bledisloe Cup
[6:15] Speaker 2: test between New Zealand and Australia. We know New Zealand
[6:18] Speaker 2: won the first test. They've already retained their trophy, 24th
[6:22] Speaker 2: year in a row that they've retrained their trophy. So
[6:25] Speaker 2: now in terms of club rugby, they are no longer
[6:29] Speaker 2: playing the URC, they're playing the Champions Cup, which is
[6:32] Speaker 2: not to be confused as well with a carry cup
[6:34] Speaker 2: because that's also ongoing at the same time. The Sharks,
[6:37] Speaker 2: the Bulls, the Lions and the Stormers are also involved
[6:41] Speaker 2: in that. So it's different competitions that you always have
[6:43] Speaker 2: to make sure you're keeping, you're cognizant of where on
[6:47] Speaker 2: the log the respective teams are. in the different competitions,
[6:50] Speaker 2: but it's always like towards March, April, where fans really
[6:54] Speaker 2: get into it because that's the business end of it
[6:56] Speaker 2: because there's just so many games happening at the same
[6:59] Speaker 2: time while also still trying to keep up with players
[7:01] Speaker 2: and making sure that they fit because, of course, the
[7:04] Speaker 2: goal between now and October next year is the Rugby
[7:07] Speaker 2: World Cup. We're slowly, slowly building up towards it.
[7:10] Speaker 1: Tolokele, thank you so much. Tolokele Mkanga speaking to us
[7:13] Speaker 1: about the world of sports.
