## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: But let's start with the return to work today of
[0:02] Speaker 1: the National Police Commissioner, Fani Masimola, arriving after seven this
[0:07] Speaker 1: morning and giving an address. He met with the deputy
[0:11] Speaker 1: national commissioners and he has recommitted himself to his job.
[0:15] Speaker 1: Corinda Jagmohan, EWN reporter, was there earlier today. Corinda, good
[0:19] Speaker 1: afternoon to you. Tell us about what Fani Masimola had
[0:22] Speaker 1: to say.
[0:23] Speaker 2: Good afternoon, Mandy. Well, Masimola has plans to renew and
[0:27] Speaker 2: revive the country's police stations to ensure there's accountability from
[0:31] Speaker 2: the top senior management and to ensure essentially that police
[0:35] Speaker 2: resources are used with accountability as well. So it was
[0:39] Speaker 2: quite a brief speech to the media, speech to the public,
[0:43] Speaker 2: in which he thanked everyone for their support during this time.
[0:47] Speaker 2: And following this, he then went into a meeting with
[0:50] Speaker 2: the police's divisional unit commanders, as well as provincial police commissioners,
[0:55] Speaker 2: to discuss what's happened in the past six months, as
[0:58] Speaker 2: well as what's going to happen going forward. What's interesting,
[1:01] Speaker 2: he also basically said that he's not back with a vengeance.
[1:05] Speaker 2: He wants to ensure that the SAPS is rid of corruption,
[1:09] Speaker 2: allegations which we have seen unfold during the Madlanga Commission incident.
[1:13] Speaker 2: and has plans to unite the police service as well.
[1:16] Speaker 2: That's something that he pressed on through his speech. Take
[1:20] Speaker 2: a listen to what he had to say about that.
[1:21] Speaker 3: I acknowledge the past, but I will not allow the
[1:26] Speaker 3: past to distract us from going forward. My focus on
[1:32] Speaker 3: the leadership and institutional renewal and improve the capacity of
[1:36] Speaker 3: the SAPs to deliver the service which is the fight
[1:41] Speaker 3: against crime in this country. As you are aware, organized
[1:46] Speaker 3: crime has been a challenge for quite some time, and
[1:50] Speaker 3: we should focus more strongly in that regard.
[1:56] Speaker 1: Obviously recommitting himself to the job as well. Did you
[2:01] Speaker 1: get the sense today that it was business as usual,
[2:05] Speaker 1: or did he have some revenge to get through as well?
[2:10] Speaker 2: It seemed to be business as usual because, you know,
[2:13] Speaker 2: when he was asked about what his plans are going forward,
[2:16] Speaker 2: he really insisted that there's no plans to, you know,
[2:20] Speaker 2: take vengeance on those who have wronged him as, you know,
[2:23] Speaker 2: it has been alleged because of these criminal charges. What
[2:26] Speaker 2: he did say about that particular issue regarding the criminal
[2:30] Speaker 2: charges is he said he believes that legal processes will
[2:33] Speaker 2: take its course, not necessarily clarifying that those legal processes
[2:37] Speaker 2: were something that he has launched, the thing that he
[2:39] Speaker 2: believes in the process that must take place according to
[2:42] Speaker 2: protocol in that regard. So it seems at this point,
[2:46] Speaker 2: his focus is on the SAPS. He's been called upon
[2:49] Speaker 2: by the presidency to ensure there is renewal, especially of
[2:53] Speaker 2: the upper management. He was asked about vacancies, critical vacancies
[2:58] Speaker 2: that need to be filled, procurement issues as well. And
[3:00] Speaker 2: he says this will be among the top priorities going forward.
[3:04] Speaker 2: And of course, you know, Mandy, he has just about
[3:06] Speaker 2: five months left in his office in this current term.
[3:10] Speaker 2: I spoke to the South African Policing Union. They're calling
[3:14] Speaker 2: for another term for Masemola. I'm not sure how that
[3:16] Speaker 2: might necessarily work, but they're saying because he hasn't been
[3:20] Speaker 2: at his office for about six months, he should get
[3:23] Speaker 2: additional time to complete his mandate, considering how he was
[3:26] Speaker 2: placed on precautionary suspension. So let's see what actually unfolds,
[3:30] Speaker 2: because at this point, the leadership of the SAPS is
[3:34] Speaker 2: at a critical level where Questions are being asked, who
[3:37] Speaker 2: can really be trusted?
