[0:19] It says that,
[0:21] And there came the therest certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium,
[0:26] who persuaded the people and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city,
[0:33] supposing that he was dead.
[0:34] How be it?
[0:36] As the disciples stood around about him, he rose up and came into the city.
[0:42] And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Debbie.
[0:47] And when they had preached the gospel in that city and had taught many,
[0:53] they returned again to Lystra and to Iconium and Antioch,
[0:58] confirming the souls of the disciples and exhorting them to continue in the faith,
[1:04] and that we must, through much tribulation, enter the kingdom of God.
[1:09] And when they had ordained them elders in every church and had prayed with fasting,
[1:15] they commended them to the Lord on whom they believed.
[1:18] And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
[1:25] And when they had preached the word in Prager, they went down into Attalia.
[1:31] And then sailed to Antioch from whence they had been recommended to the grace for the work which they had fulfilled.
[1:40] And when they were come and had gathered the church together,
[1:45] they rehearsed all that God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
[1:54] And there they abode long time with the disciples.
[1:58] Here ends the reading of God's word.
[2:00] Father, thank you for the privilege to get into your word.
[2:03] As your word is taught, we pray that let the scrolls be opened.
[2:07] Do us good through the teaching of your word.
[2:10] Let Christ be seen.
[2:12] Let godly ways be rescued.
[2:14] Let godly ways be preserved in the church.
[2:18] And let Jesus be exalted.

[2:28] Our attempt to give a title for the message today, Continue in Faith.
[2:35] Now, in our last session, we saw how God worked through the apostles.
[2:40] Strong miracles.
[2:41] And in Lystra, a man was healed.
[2:47] And when the miracle happened, the people thought the gods have come down to them.
[2:51] So they thought it's Zeus and Hermes.
[2:54] And they spoke in their language, let's sacrifice for these people.
[2:59] Because they are gods.
[3:01] And feeding on a legend, which is known in the Bible, talking about that Lystra.
[3:08] It was a legend that years ago, the gods came to visit them.
[3:15] Zeus and Hermes.
[3:16] And they disguised themselves as human beings.
[3:18] And the people didn't know.
[3:19] So no one gave them lodging, apart from two peasants in the corner somewhere who accommodated them.
[3:27] And so afterwards, when they left, they brought judgment against the land.
[3:31] And there was earthquake.
[3:32] Everybody died, apart from those two who hosted the gods.
[3:36] These are legends, not in the Bible.
[3:38] It's historically believed that where in Lystra, that's the mindset they had.
[3:43] So that will give you a reason why they treated Paul and Barnabas the way they did.
[3:49] So they knew the gods came down.
[3:51] And they knew one day the gods would come again.
[3:54] And those two people who hosted the gods, they became big giant trees in front of the city temple.
[4:02] So at the time Paul and Barnabas were doing that, the city temple, there's this huge giant trees that were a symbol of the people who hosted the gods.
[4:13] And the gods memorialized them.
[4:15] So when now they saw what happened with Paul and Barnabas, they said, no, the gods have come again.
[4:22] Let's treat them well so that this time they don't punish us.
[4:25] So they went and brought the priest of Zeus, Jupiter, to come and offer sacrifices.
[4:34] But Paul and Barnabas didn't know that that's the plan they were doing.
[4:38] Because they spoke in their language.
[4:40] Meanwhile, Paul and Barnabas spoke Greek, and those guys understood Greek.
[4:43] But when they came to what they wanted to do, they spoke in their language.
[4:46] You know when you go somewhere and people are speaking a language, you just don't know what they are talking about,
[4:51] and you are waiting for them to finish.
[4:52] But they noticed that these guys have started preparing with the flowers on their necks.
[4:59] The priest has come, started repairing the grounds, and they started bowing before Paul and Barnabas.
[5:05] They said, guys, what are you doing?
[5:08] Please stop it.
[5:08] We are just ordinary human beings.
[5:10] And so they stopped them.
[5:12] Now, verse 19 says that.
[5:14] Jews.
[5:14] Say Jews.
[5:15] Jews.
[5:16] Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and came there.
[5:20] And they came to persuade the people in Lystra that, listen, they are actually not gods.
[5:29] It's right.
[5:29] They are not gods.
[5:30] They are bad guys.
[5:31] They are coming to trouble your city.
[5:34] Trouble you here.
[5:35] They are bad guys.
[5:37] If you accommodate these people here, their gods will be against you.
[5:40] So now those who were coming to make sacrifices to them now made sacrifices out of them.
[5:49] You see how fickle people can be?
[5:52] Usually God too has a way of doing things that when a servant of God begins to gain too much celebrity status,
[6:00] God has a way of allowing some things to come to bring them, not to pull them down, but to make them remember you are human.
[6:09] The same people who said the gods have come, we want to offer sacrifices.
[6:14] It wasn't different people.
[6:15] It was the same people.
[6:18] The same people.
[6:19] Listen, Bible said when they persuaded them, verse 19 again, when the Jews persuaded the people, they stoned Paul.
[6:26] Now, you see, Bible just mentioned the stone Paul, but think about it.
[6:30] Stoning, they were not stoning him like boys playing and then he throws out small stones.
[6:35] No, they were executing Paul.
[6:38] So people will come, take rocks and throw it at you.
[6:42] Public execution.
[6:43] They throw it at you.
[6:45] So you can imagine, that was a very bad way of killing somebody.
[6:48] You see a stone coming and then it hits you, then another one comes and hits you.
[6:52] Ow!
[6:53] I mean, you can imagine how graphic that would be.
[6:57] And one big stone hit Paul at a vital point.
[7:01] Wow!
[7:06] And he fell down.
[7:07] He fell down.
[7:10] Dead.
[7:10] So they knew he's dead.
[7:12] He stopped breathing.
[7:13] Life slipped out of him as it were.
[7:16] He became unconscious.
[7:17] And they continued hitting him.
[7:19] Then when they knew they finished the work, they didn't leave him.
[7:23] They dragged him out of the city.
[7:25] It's in your Bible.
[7:26] They dragged him.
[7:27] I'm sure they'll be holding the leg.
[7:29] Drag Paul out of the city.
[7:32] Stoned him.
[7:32] Drag him out of the city.
[7:35] Supposing he was dead.
[7:37] Now, some theologians believe he actually died.
[7:40] Even though the Bible didn't say he died.
[7:42] Because in 2 Corinthians chapter 12, he said he knows a man who was taken into the presence of God.
[7:48] He said, whether he was in the body or out of the body, he said, I don't know.
[7:52] I'm not permitted to speak about the things.
[7:54] So he actually went to paradise and back.
[7:56] So some people believe that is when he wrote this.
[8:00] Because what happened to him, it was in the Galatian territory.
[8:04] So it's believed that he went to paradise.
[8:07] He went to the presence of God.
[8:09] And he came back into his body.
[8:12] The Bible does not say that.
[8:14] Right?
[8:15] But sometimes you can see potentially.
[8:18] But we don't have to make a doctrine out of it.
[8:20] So Paul, really, the people knew he was dead.
[8:25] And they dragged him out of the city.
[8:29] Then the disciples stood, including Barnabas.
[8:31] Now Barnabas is now beginning to rehearse what he will say at the funeral.
[8:36] Because you know, the guy is gone.
[8:38] They knew he was dead.
[8:39] So Barnabas will be gone.
[8:41] Now what am I going to do?
[8:41] Am I going to go alone?
[8:43] Okay, when we bury him.
[8:44] It was, then suddenly, they saw life coming back to the guy.
[8:49] Because the disciples surrounded him.
[8:51] They've killed our man.
[8:53] Then suddenly, life came back into the apostle Paul.
[8:56] And he got up.
[8:58] They said, oh, he's alive.
[8:58] He's alive.
[8:59] He's alive.
[9:00] No funeral.
[9:00] No funeral.
[9:01] No funeral.
[9:02] He's alive.
[9:04] Don't call any funeral.
[9:05] Don't do the obituary.
[9:06] It's not necessary.
[9:07] He's here.
[9:08] He's alive.
[9:09] So, Bible says that.
[9:11] However, when the disciples gathered around, he arose and went into the city.
[9:17] What you haven't, you may not see through.
[9:19] The text will not say it.
[9:21] But you should see it's in the text.
[9:23] If for them to stone you, you, he, you see, before they dragged him in the city, he was lying in a pool of his own blood.
[9:31] That's why they knew he was dead.
[9:35] So, you can imagine the bruises, the wounds, big cuts, and pain, bodily pain.
[9:42] But he got up and went back into the city.
[9:44] He said, for me to live is Christ, to die is gain.
[9:47] He went back into the city.
[9:49] Paul arose and went back into the city.
[9:51] And then the next day, he left with Barnabas.
[9:54] So, the next day, they departed into Debbie.
[9:59] So, then verse 21 says that.
[10:01] And when they had preached the gospel, they didn't stop preaching.
[10:04] Their mission was preaching.
[10:07] It was the mission of the church.
[10:11] A church that stops preaching has gone past its sale by date.
[10:16] It's expired.
[10:17] When they had preached the gospel to that city and made, can you imagine?
[10:25] After this, they were still making disciples.
[10:27] Made many disciples.
[10:29] They returned to that place.
[10:33] It's called the first missionary journey.
[10:34] They went to other cities.
[10:36] So, then they did a uterine and returned to the places they had preached already.
[10:43] Wow.
[10:44] They returned to the places.
[10:46] So, one of the things I want to draw your attention to is, our mission is not only to preach the gospel and win souls as the church.
[10:58] The church is supposed to preach the gospel and win souls or get people born again.
[11:04] But that is 50% of their mission work.
[11:08] That is 50% of their work.
[11:10] Ah.
[11:11] Pastor, so what's the other 50%?
[11:13] I'm glad you're asking.

[11:22] So, the first part of the mission of the church is to win souls.
[11:29] The second part is what they weren't doing.

[11:36] The verse 21 says that, in my Bible, it says,
[11:39] And when they had preached the gospel in that city and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch.
[11:47] See, not only one place.
[11:48] They were moving from place to what?
[11:50] For what?
[11:53] Confirming their souls.
[11:56] 50% to win them.
[11:57] The other 50% is to establish them.

[12:03] So, they didn't go back preaching per se.
[12:07] They went back confirming, establishing.

[12:13] Making sure these guys are stable in the church.

[12:21] They went back and established them wherever they are preached already.

[13:08] This scripture was the mind behind it.
[13:11] Was the brain behind it.

[13:15] So, it's more discipleship oriented than just evangelism.
[13:20] It was establishing souls.
[13:23] Establishing souls.

[13:25] One of my biggest excitement is to establish souls.

[13:31] I am a soul establisher.

[13:42] you will hear Bible whether you like it or not.

[14:32] And then they made their way to Perga all the way back to.
[14:38] It's called the first missionary journey.
[14:40] So their mission was just to go and establish souls.
[14:45] Win them and establish them.
[14:47] Now, so they look at the text again.

[16:11] When you are born again,
[16:13] it's your spirit that is saved.
[16:15] Your soul is being saved.
[16:18] At the resurrection, your body will be saved.

[16:21] So I am saved in my spirit.
[16:24] In my spirit, I have God-consciousness.
[16:26] In my soul, I have self-consciousness.
[16:28] In my body, I have world-consciousness.
[16:31] I'm saved in my spirit.
[16:32] I am being saved in my soul.
[16:35] And I shall be saved at the second coming.

[16:39] So then there will be no more pain.
[16:41] No more sickness.
[16:41] The body shall put on in corruption.

[16:46] But so then, as we stay in this body,

[16:51] However, your soul said,
[16:53] receive with meekness.

[16:57] The word of God is able to save your soul.
[17:00] So your spirit is saved.

[17:03] Wherefore, lay aside all filthiness,
[17:05] for filthiness, and receive with meekness

[17:11] So what is the constituent component of your soul?
[17:14] What constitutes your soul?
[17:15] Your mind.
[17:19] Your emotions.
[17:21] And your will.
[17:23] So your mind,
[17:24] your emotions,
[17:25] or feelings.
[17:26] That's where romance is,
[17:29] in your feelings,
[17:30] in your soul.
[17:31] And then your will.
[17:35] I will not do it.
[17:36] I will not go there.
[17:37] Your decision making is in your soul,
[17:40] which is based on your will.
[17:42] Your feelings.
[17:43] What you have a heart for
[17:44] is in your soul,
[17:47] which is your emotions.
[17:49] And your intellect,
[17:51] your education,
[17:52] the things you know,
[17:53] the things you are aware of,
[17:55] your intelligence,
[17:56] everything,
[17:57] the things you know,
[17:58] the things you are aware of,
[18:00] which influence your decision,
[18:02] they are all in your mind.
[18:04] That's why it says that
[18:04] being transformed,
[18:07] you're already saved,
[18:09] but your mind needs renewing.
[18:11] So as you receive God's word,
[18:13] day in and day out,
[18:14] and put it into practice,
[18:16] your soul is being saved.
[18:17] It's affecting your mind.
[18:19] So the disciple has a mind,
[18:22] has a soul.
[18:24] Okay.
[18:24] So the disciple has a mind,
[18:25] has a feeling,
[18:27] and has a will.
[18:28] And they now,
[18:30] after you are saved,
[18:31] discipleship program
[18:32] is to establish your soul.
[18:36] People can be born again today
[18:38] and born again tomorrow.
[18:41] I don't know if you know people who,
[18:42] in fact,
[18:43] some of us,
[18:43] you were so emotional about something,
[18:45] excited about something,
[18:46] and another time,
[18:47] I don't believe in this.
[18:48] I'm not even sure.
[18:49] I don't believe in Titan,
[18:50] I'm not free again.
[18:51] I don't believe in serving in church.
[18:53] I don't.
[18:54] Because your soul
[18:55] was not properly established
[18:57] in that light.
[18:59] And so they went back to,

[19:05] I am to establish your soul.
[19:08] It's not necessary
[19:09] to make you feel excited,
[19:10] and all that,
[19:11] that's all part of the whole church thing.

[19:14] you cannot only restrict
[19:16] your Christian life
[19:17] to general gatherings.
[19:20] That's why we have small groups.
[19:22] We have cell meetings.
[19:24] We have different,
[19:25] different training systems,
[19:26] maturity systems,
[19:27] to establish the soul.
[19:30] Because the rubbish in my life
[19:32] is based in my soul.
[19:36] My character
[19:37] is so determined.
[19:40] The way,
[19:41] maybe,
[19:41] I would like eating
[19:42] and no control.
[19:43] The way I love sleeping.
[19:46] The way I can be so stubborn.
[19:47] All those things.
[19:49] It's in my,
[19:49] I'm saved,
[19:50] I'm saved,
[19:51] but my soul needs saving.
[19:55] Christians who fight always
[19:57] in their homes
[19:57] and in departments,
[19:59] it's their soul problem.

[20:08] That's why you just easily,

[20:11] one moment you are crying,

[20:35] but we have to
[20:36] establish them.

[20:41] have become wishy-washy
[20:43] because they are filled
[20:44] with unestablished
[20:46] believers,
[20:47] souls.
[20:48] People whose souls
[20:49] have not been established.
[20:52] Not been established.
[20:54] You are struggling
[20:54] with temptation,
[20:56] struggling with pornography,
[20:57] it's their soul problem.
[20:58] They went back
[21:04] to establish,

[21:08] your soul,
[21:09] it has to do with
[21:09] your mind,
[21:10] your understanding.
[21:13] In 1 Corinthians 2,
[21:14] verse 16,
[21:15] he says that
[21:15] we have the mind
[21:17] of Christ.

[21:19] For who has known
[21:23] the mind of the Lord
[21:25] that he may instruct him,
[21:27] but we have
[21:27] the mind
[21:28] of Christ.

[21:32] verse 10,
[21:33] he said,
[21:33] that I may know him.
[21:35] Paul is talking this.
[21:36] Paul,
[21:37] a serious apostle,
[21:39] he's saying
[21:39] that I may know him
[21:40] because the soul
[21:42] is beginning to
[21:43] still go on
[21:44] and know something
[21:45] and develop.
[21:46] He said,
[21:46] that I may know him.
[21:48] That's talking about
[21:49] the mind.
[21:50] God wants us
[21:51] to know him
[21:51] so we can
[21:53] serve him well.
[21:55] And then,
[21:56] he wants us
[21:56] to know him,
[21:57] not just in our minds,
[21:58] he also wants
[21:59] in our feelings
[22:00] to have a heart
[22:01] for God
[22:02] and develop
[22:04] an appetite
[22:05] for the interest
[22:06] of God.
[22:07] There are things
[22:08] God has interest in.
[22:09] When you are not
[22:10] established,
[22:11] your soul is not
[22:12] established,
[22:13] you don't care
[22:13] about God's interest
[22:14] and you don't have
[22:16] a heart for God
[22:16] easily.
[22:17] So when souls
[22:18] that are established,
[22:20] they care so much
[22:21] about God's interest.
[22:22] This thing I'm saying,
[22:23] how much is it going
[22:24] to affect what God
[22:25] is doing?
[22:26] This behavior
[22:27] I'm putting up,
[22:28] how much is it?
[22:30] In Romans chapter 16,
[22:32] verse 4,
[22:33] he said,
[22:33] these guys
[22:34] lay down their necks.
[22:36] These are matured,
[22:37] established believers
[22:38] who risked
[22:39] their own necks
[22:39] for my life
[22:40] to whom
[22:41] not only I,
[22:43] but also
[22:43] the churches
[22:44] of the Gentiles.
[22:45] He said,
[22:45] to whom
[22:46] not only
[22:47] I give thanks,
[22:48] but the churches.
[22:50] Churches
[22:50] are thankful
[22:51] to God
[22:52] for these people.
[22:53] These people
[22:54] whose life
[22:56] have been buried
[22:57] in the things
[22:59] of God
[22:59] for the interest
[23:00] of God.
[23:01] When people
[23:02] are not growing,
[23:03] they don't see
[23:04] things from that
[23:04] because their hearts
[23:06] is not captured
[23:07] by God's interest.
[23:10] God has an interest.
[23:10] When your soul
[23:12] is established,
[23:13] your interest
[23:14] begins to be
[23:16] God's interest,
[23:17] the things
[23:18] God is interested in.
[23:20] The songwriter says,
[23:21] breathe on me
[23:22] breath of God.
[23:24] Fill me with life
[23:25] anew
[23:25] that I may love
[23:27] what thou dost love
[23:28] and do
[23:29] what thou wilt do.
[23:32] So,
[23:33] your mind,
[23:34] our mind,
[23:34] our knowledge base
[23:35] that we may know God,
[23:38] know God
[23:39] and appreciate
[23:39] his move
[23:40] and then number two,
[23:41] we will have
[23:42] a heart for him
[23:43] and develop
[23:46] an interest
[23:48] for what
[23:48] he is interested in.
[23:50] And then number three,
[23:51] our will
[23:52] will be strong.
[23:54] Strong to make decisions
[23:56] for the Lord.
[23:58] Strong enough
[23:59] to stay firm
