[0:19] And Saul was consenting unto his death. [0:23] And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem. [0:29] And they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria except the apostles. [0:38] And devout men carried Stephen to his burial and made great lamentation over him. [0:46] As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house. [0:54] And hurling men and women committed them to prison. [0:59] Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word. [1:08] And Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them. [1:14] Here ends the reading of God's word. [1:17] Shall we please pray? [1:18] Father, we thank you for the privilege to get into your word. [1:22] I pray that as you give me the privilege of teaching your word, [1:26] may the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to thee, O Lord, my Father. [1:35] I pray that as your word is taught, grant us access and insight into dimensions of you that humans cannot take us. [1:47] Holy Spirit, brood upon us and reveal Jesus from the pages of scripture. what you do what you do what you do what you do what you do what you do what you do what [2:23] so we go into a new chapter chapter 8 of Acts we saw in chapter 7 how chapter 7 was primarily [2:40] about the preaching of Stephen and for that matter you can't separate the preaching of [2:50] Stephen from Stephen so the chapter introduces us to Stephen beginning to submit his apologia [3:01] and the chapter closes with us being told about Stephen's death so Acts chapter 7 the very last [3:15] verse says that and Stephen kneeled down or knelt down and cried with a loud voice Lord lay not the sin [3:29] to their charge wow last Sunday we heard a lot about that and we thank God for it so he says that [3:37] and when he had said this he fell asleep believers don't die they do good night see you in the morning [3:49] believers check out of here expecting to wake up on the other side so Paul puts it this way for me to be [4:00] absent in the body is to be present with the Lord so he says that when I'm not here I know I'm going [4:11] to be with the Lord because God will change verse 21 said I will change our vile bodies so he said I'm [4:16] actually torn in between two whether to live which is nicer to be with Jesus or to stay alive here for [4:25] the church so you see what should preoccupy a believer's life on earth is the work of God because [4:31] Paul said if I leave is better for me but for your sake I'll stay because if I stay is better for you [4:38] talking about is better for the church uh for church sorry Philippians chapter 1 is better nevertheless [4:43] to abide here in the flesh is more needful for you for the church so Paul said that for me to be [4:51] absent in the flesh is to be present second Corinthians 5 yeah to be absent in the flesh [4:58] is to be present with the Lord wow as soon as you check out from the body you are present with the Lord [5:05] that's the beauty of being a believer so Stephen before he left he saw the master standing and he said [5:15] master lay not this to the church and he fell asleep but there's something very interesting in the verse [5:22] 58 an introduction was made before Stephen's introduction came into Acts chapter 6 and before [5:32] Stephen left the scene an introduction of a certain important person was made in verse 58 Acts chapter 7 verse 58 [5:40] and cast him thus the people were upset with Stephen angry and cast him out of the city and stoned him and now watch this [5:49] and the witnesses and I told you about before you stoned somebody you need at least two witnesses two or three [5:56] the first witness will cast the first stone and then the second if he doesn't die the second witness will follow by casting the [6:06] second stone now if he doesn't die the rest of them so the first witness will push him into the ditch or the pit and then cast the first stone and then the others will follow so the witnesses those who were the chief mastermind or the those who actually oversaw his execution they laid their garments with Saul he wasn't in Bible calling a young man [6:35] so Saul was a young man don't wait till he are old even though there's a future for old people I'm talking about did you hear what I said there's a future there's a future for old people [6:49] most people have squandered all their future already but God will help us all [7:00] amen [7:00] when I consider my age I begin to get concerned because I am older than I was supposed I'm expecting [7:12] I realize I'm older than I'm expecting [7:19] sometimes when I see what God has done with people who are younger [7:24] I'm wondering but I could have done maybe I should have done more [7:29] so wake up bro [7:32] you are seriously running out of time [7:36] when you go to sleep [7:38] and you wake up on the other side [7:41] Jesus will be asking you [7:42] he said [7:43] we need to have a serious conversation [7:46] I like the way the place gets inquired because [7:50] everybody is aware they are growing [7:52] everybody is aware they are growing [7:56] so young man [7:57] somebody is a young man [7:59] tell somebody I'm a young man or I'm a young woman [8:03] a young man [8:08] they laid their garments at the young man's feet [8:12] whose name was Saul [8:14] so that's the first introduction of this iconic figure in the scripture [8:18] the Bible introduced him [8:20] where was he introduced [8:21] at the execution of Stephen [8:23] and that also became his turn around in life [8:28] it wasn't necessarily his encounter with Jesus [8:31] that started it [8:32] it was the death of Stephen [8:34] that started it [8:36] he shouldn't have witnessed it [8:37] because his witnessing of what happened to Stephen [8:41] became the torture and torment [8:46] for the rest of his life [8:49] if he was going to stay away from the mission of God [8:51] he saw something in Stephen [8:53] and he heard something from Stephen [8:55] so in Acts chapter 26 verse 16 [8:57] he says that God told him [8:59] arise [8:59] stand up on your feet [9:00] for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose [9:03] to make thee a minister [9:04] and a witness [9:05] most of the things which you have seen [9:08] he saw some things [9:10] and not only that [9:11] and those of the things which thou hast seen [9:14] and of those things which I will appear unto [9:17] so he says that Paul saw things [9:19] one of the things he witnessed was Stephen [9:22] Stephen's apologia and Stephen's death [9:25] I believe Stephen was making a statement [9:28] come and see how a believer dies [9:30] a man many years ago was about to die [9:34] he was very unwell in the hospital [9:37] many years ago [9:38] an old man [9:39] so [9:39] and he's a believer [9:40] he preaches everywhere [9:42] and when he was [9:43] the doctors told him [9:44] he has got about six days to live [9:45] or something like that [9:46] but he was very old [9:47] and he sent a letter [9:48] this is many years ago [9:50] in mid England [9:52] or somewhere [9:52] he sent letters [9:53] around to all his loved ones [9:56] and friends [9:56] and those letters [9:58] he said [9:58] come and see how a believer dies [10:00] come and see how a believer dies [10:03] a believer never fears death [10:06] well [10:08] so [10:08] Paul or Saul was introduced at that point [10:12] and now when you go to the chapter 8 [10:15] verse 1 [10:16] look at what it says [10:18] do you see that [10:20] this guy [10:22] this guy [10:24] he said the Bible has a way of doing some things [10:27] Luke introduced him just a little bit [10:30] he mentioned [10:31] because what [10:32] how significant was he [10:34] for Luke to have mentioned him that day [10:36] witnesses lay their garment [10:37] at his feet [10:38] who was he [10:40] how important [10:41] he was a theological student of Gamaliel [10:43] a very important person [10:45] in the synagogue [10:46] of the Cyrenians [10:47] Saul [10:49] very prominent [10:50] and important person [10:51] highly academic [10:53] and highly intellectual [10:54] and very passionate [10:56] for the things of God [10:57] and yet [10:58] he didn't know God [10:59] because the Judaism [11:01] that was being practiced [11:02] at the time of [11:03] Jesus and the early church [11:05] was different from the Judaism [11:06] Moses gave [11:07] it had been severely infiltrated [11:10] with all kinds of [11:10] human traditions [11:12] and natural elements [11:14] that it was [11:15] just that [11:16] the way the church [11:17] sometimes [11:18] can look now [11:19] when Apostle Paul and Peter [11:21] some of them [11:21] when they visit the church [11:23] they will be saying [11:23] what is going on [11:24] are they at church [11:26] is that [11:27] I believe Peter [11:29] will say [11:29] is that pastor [11:31] preaching or what [11:32] is that pastor [11:35] preaching [11:36] what's that [11:37] is that preaching [11:37] what in church [11:39] oh no [11:40] that's a [11:40] university lecture [11:41] he's giving [11:42] that's the political speech [11:45] the person is doing [11:46] Peter [11:47] will be baffled [11:48] you know [11:49] so it's human [11:50] as generation [11:51] comes and generation [11:52] goes [11:52] it's very likely [11:53] to drift [11:54] drift [11:55] the only thing [11:56] that saves us [11:56] from drifting [11:57] is not our strength [11:59] and our intelligence [12:00] but our dependence [12:01] and reliance [12:02] on the Holy Spirit [12:03] our dependence [12:05] and reliance [12:06] on the Holy Spirit [12:07] is the only thing [12:08] that can help [12:09] anybody [12:10] from drifting [12:11] even Peter [12:12] after saying that [12:14] you are the son [12:14] of the living God [12:15] six or seven verses [12:17] down [12:18] he was drifting [12:19] and Satan [12:20] was comfortably [12:20] operating in Peter [12:21] so Jesus wouldn't [12:22] have built a church [12:23] on somebody like that [12:24] he was drifting [12:28] we all drift [12:31] easily [12:32] naturally [12:32] and leak [12:33] we also leak [12:35] naturally [12:35] that's why [12:36] we have to be [12:37] Ephesians chapter 5 [12:39] verse 18 [12:39] he said [12:40] being filled [12:41] that's the original [12:43] Greek is [12:44] be being filled [12:45] so it's a present [12:47] continuous term [12:48] be being filled [12:49] why [12:50] because you are [12:51] always leaking [12:51] spiritually [12:53] we are all [12:54] all of us [12:55] all of us [12:57] keep leaking [12:58] that's why we all [12:59] have to be [13:01] constantly filled [13:02] so we saw [13:03] how Saul [13:04] a theological student [13:06] was actually [13:08] endorsing [13:10] look at that [13:10] chapter 8 [13:11] verse 1 [13:12] Acts chapter [13:13] and Saul [13:14] did you see that [13:14] was what [13:16] was what [13:18] let's try [13:20] another translation [13:21] and see [13:21] and let's start [13:23] from the New King James [13:23] instead of [13:24] we walk down [13:24] through the [13:25] good ones [13:25] till we get [13:26] to the [13:26] different ones [13:27] the New King James [13:28] says that [13:29] the same [13:29] was consenting [13:30] now let's go [13:31] to the New [13:31] American Standard [13:32] and then the [13:33] English Standard [13:33] then we go [13:34] to the NIV [13:35] then we go [13:35] to the NLT [13:36] before we [13:37] arrive [13:37] at [13:39] and then we [13:40] save it [13:41] with Amplified [13:43] okay [13:43] and Saul [13:45] was in [13:47] hearty [13:48] agreement [13:48] with putting [13:50] him to death [13:50] yes [13:52] he was [13:53] very happy [13:53] with joy [13:55] let's look at [13:58] the English [13:58] before the NIV [13:59] English [14:00] that's the name [16:25] chapter 8 [16:26] his behavior [16:27] and approval [16:28] his authority [16:29] chapter 9 [16:30] was [16:33] now [16:33] he is the [16:34] one [16:34] you see [16:35] the idea [16:36] is opening [16:37] up more [16:37] he was [16:39] breathing [16:39] out [16:40] threatenings [16:41] and slaughter [16:42] against the [16:42] disciples of the [16:43] Lord [16:43] Saul [16:45] who is this [16:46] guy [16:46] he seemed [16:48] to be behind [16:49] the scenes [16:49] but he was [16:50] pulling a lot [16:51] of strings [16:51] behind the [16:51] scenes [16:52] and now [16:53] he moved [16:53] from behind [16:54] the scenes [16:54] really [16:55] he was [16:56] coming to [16:56] the forefront [16:56] Saul [16:58] was [16:59] this young [17:00] man [17:00] this young [17:01] man [17:01] was approving [17:02] of his [17:03] death [17:03] Acts chapter 8 [17:04] verse 1 [17:04] now let's [17:05] look at the [17:05] text again [17:06] Acts chapter 8 [17:07] verse 1 [17:07] it says that [17:08] and Saul [17:09] was consenting [17:10] unto his [17:10] death [17:11] and at that [17:12] time [17:12] there was [17:13] a great [17:14] persecution [17:14] against the [17:15] church [17:15] which was [17:16] at Jerusalem [17:17] interesting [17:17] say the [17:18] church [17:18] at Jerusalem [17:19] but where [17:21] else was [17:21] the church [17:22] nowhere else [17:23] but why did [17:24] the scripture [17:24] say that [17:24] if the scripture [17:25] said against [17:26] the church [17:27] it should have [17:27] still implied [17:28] Jerusalem [17:29] because there [17:30] was no church [17:30] anywhere at [17:30] that time [17:31] the church [17:32] was born [17:32] in Jerusalem [17:32] and stayed [17:33] in Jerusalem [17:34] even though [17:34] Jesus was [17:35] telling them [17:36] they should [17:36] go to [17:37] all over [17:37] the Acts [17:38] chapter 1 [17:38] verse 8 [17:39] you shall [17:39] receive power [17:40] after the [17:40] Holy Ghost [17:40] has come [17:41] you shall [17:41] be witnesses [17:42] unto me [17:42] in Jerusalem [17:43] in Judea [17:44] in Samaria [17:45] and unto [17:46] the uttermost [17:46] parts of the [17:47] from the [18:23] diaspora [18:23] Jews [18:24] who have [18:24] come from [18:25] the diaspora [18:25] to celebrate [18:26] Pentacles [18:27] stayed there [18:28] they didn't [18:28] leave [18:28] so it was [18:30] where things [18:31] were happening [18:31] why would [18:31] you leave [18:32] people are [18:33] actually leaving [18:33] other places [18:34] to come to [18:35] Jerusalem [18:35] for the [18:36] purpose of [18:36] church [18:36] they come [18:38] and get [18:38] born again [18:39] and they [18:39] won't leave [18:39] they actually [18:40] leave every [18:41] other thing [18:41] and stay [18:42] in Jerusalem [18:42] to actually [18:43] be part [18:44] of their [18:44] disciples [18:44] and so [18:45] they won't [18:46] leave [18:46] but God [18:47] had told [18:47] them [18:47] that [18:48] you are [18:48] supposed [18:48] to be [18:49] witnesses [18:49] unto me [18:50] in Judea [18:51] in Samaria [18:52] and to the [18:52] uttermost [18:53] part of [18:53] the world [18:53] and so [18:54] the Bible [18:54] says that [18:55] at that [18:55] material moment [18:56] the church [18:56] was only [18:57] in Jerusalem [18:57] because [18:58] from chapter [18:58] 2 [18:59] when the [18:59] 3,000 [19:00] joined the [19:01] church [19:01] and chapter [19:02] 3 [19:02] leading to [19:02] chapter [19:03] 4 [19:03] where 5,000 [19:04] joined the [19:04] church [19:05] and then [19:05] chapter 5 [19:06] multitudes [19:07] were joining [19:07] the church [19:08] all was [19:08] happening [19:09] in Jerusalem [19:09] to the [19:10] chapter 6 [19:10] says that [19:11] the disciples [19:12] had multiplied [19:12] so there [19:13] was a [19:13] problem [19:14] and so [19:15] they had [19:15] to put [19:16] in a [19:16] system [19:17] of [19:17] management [19:18] because [19:18] the church [19:19] was [19:19] multiplied [19:19] and then [19:20] in verse [19:20] 7 [19:20] of chapter [19:21] 6 [19:21] the church [19:22] greatly [19:22] multiplied [19:23] the word [19:23] of God [19:24] increased [19:24] and the [19:25] disciples [19:25] greatly [19:25] multiplied [19:26] in Jerusalem [19:27] and many [19:28] great number [19:28] of priests [19:29] became [19:29] so this [19:30] thing [19:30] was a [19:30] Jerusalem [19:31] thing [19:31] and then [19:33] after that [19:33] Stephen [19:34] the next [19:34] verse [19:34] look at [19:35] verse 8 [19:35] Stephen [19:36] verse 8 [19:38] Stephen [19:38] comes on [19:39] the scene [19:39] because Stephen [19:40] said now [19:40] we are [19:41] growing here [19:41] there's [19:41] going to [19:42] be [19:42] scattering [19:42] Stephen [19:43] didn't say [19:43] that [19:43] but that [19:44] was the [19:44] agenda [19:44] of God [19:45] Stephen's [19:46] death [19:46] was a [19:47] seed [19:47] of God [19:48] for the [19:49] scattering [19:49] of the [19:49] church [19:49] or for [19:50] the [19:50] spreading [19:50] of the [19:51] gospel [19:51] so Stephen [19:53] was used [19:54] as a [19:54] seed [19:55] to send [19:56] the gospel [19:56] forth [19:56] because the [19:57] guys were [19:57] having too [19:58] much good [19:59] time in [19:59] church [19:59] and they [20:01] didn't have [20:02] plans to [20:02] leave [20:02] and go [20:03] anyway [20:03] so [20:04] the Bible [20:05] says that [20:06] there was a [20:07] great persecution [20:07] that arose [20:09] verse [20:09] it says that [20:10] and Saul [20:11] was consenting [20:12] to his [20:12] death [20:13] and at [20:14] that time [20:14] there was [20:15] a great [20:16] persecution [20:17] that arose [20:19] against the [20:20] church [20:20] which was [20:21] at [20:22] Jerusalem [20:23] now what [20:24] does that [20:24] mean [20:24] I need to [20:25] explain something [20:26] to you very [20:26] carefully [20:26] when the Bible [20:28] used the word [20:28] the church [20:29] it's referring [20:30] to one of [20:31] two things [20:32] when the Bible [20:33] used the word [20:34] the church [20:34] it's either [20:35] talking about [20:36] the universal [20:37] church which is [20:38] also called the [20:39] body of Christ [20:39] Ephesians chapter [20:40] 1 verse 22 [20:41] 23 which is [20:43] the body [20:43] of Christ [20:44] okay [20:45] so it's [20:45] the and has [20:46] put all things [20:46] under his feet [20:47] and given to [20:47] me the head [20:48] over all things [20:49] to the church [20:51] the next verse [20:52] which is his [20:52] body [20:52] so when you [20:54] use the word [20:54] the body [20:54] of Christ [20:55] talking about [20:55] all believers [20:57] of all time [20:58] that we are [20:59] the church [21:00] Peter is still [21:01] part of the church [21:02] Apostle Paul is [21:03] still part of the church [21:04] Stephen is still [21:05] part of the church [21:05] Charles Wesley [21:06] is still [21:07] part of the church [21:08] Calvin [21:09] John [21:09] Calvin is still [21:10] I mean all [21:11] people who have [21:11] slept
