[0:00] Welcome, and thank you for joining this message by David Entry at Carish Church.
[0:06] In this season of Great Awakening, may God pour out His Spirit through His Word, refreshing
[0:11] ! your hearts and awakening you to His will.
[0:13] Acts 20, reading from verse 17.
[0:18] And from Melitus, he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church.
[0:28] And when they were come to Him, He said unto them, Ye know from the first day that I came
[0:34] into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, serving the Lord with all
[0:42] humility of mind and with many tears and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the
[0:52] Jews. And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shielded you and have taught
[1:00] you publicly and from house to house, testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks, repentance
[1:07] towards God and faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the Spirit
[1:12] unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there, save that the Holy Ghost
[1:18] witnesses in every city, saying that bones and afflictions abide me. But none of these things
[1:26] move me, neither can't I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy in the
[1:34] ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesus to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
[1:41] And now, behold, I know that ye all among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God shall see my
[1:49] face no more. Wherefore, I take you to record this day that I am pure from the blood of all men,
[1:56] for I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed, therefore, unto yourselves
[2:03] and to all the flock over which the Holy Ghost has made you overseers to feed the church of God,
[2:10] which he has purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departure shall grievous wolves
[2:17] enter among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise speaking perverse
[2:25] things to draw away disciples after them. Therefore, watch and remember that by the space of three years,
[2:32] I cease not to warn everyone night and day with tears. And now, brethren, I commend you to God
[2:41] and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among
[2:46] all them which are sanctified. I have coveted no man's silver or gold or apel. Yea, ye yourselves know
[2:56] that these hands have ministered unto my necessities and to them that were with me. I have shewed you
[3:03] all things. How that so laboring you ought to support the weak and to remember the words of our Lord Jesus,
[3:11] how he said, it is more blessed to give than to receive. And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled
[3:19] down and prayed with them all. And they all wept sore and fell on Paul's neck and kissed him,
[3:28] sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more.
[3:34] And they accompanied him onto the ship. Here is the reading of God's word. Let's pray, please. Father,
[3:41] thank you so much for the privilege to get into your word. As we get into your word, guide us by your
[3:47] spirit. Feed us with bread, fresh bread from above. You are the bread of life. You are the only one who
[3:53] can feed us. So feed us as your word is taught. Lord, let the words of my mouth and the meditations
[3:59] of my heart be acceptable to you as I navigate your people through the word. Help me to stay
[4:04] on your word. Help me not to digress and deviate onto things that are not for edifying. I thank you
[4:11] that your word is here to edify us. We expose ourselves. Let your word do the surgery. Let
[4:17] your word do the edifying. Let your word bring the deliverance. Let your word do the conviction
[4:22] by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let your word bring up faith. Let your word bring life. Let
[4:29] your word bring empowerment. And let your word bring deliverance to your glory. In Jesus' name
[4:35] and all shall say, Amen. Please be seated. Hallelujah. Well, we saw last week how Paul, in Acts chapter
[4:48] 20, I mentioned that it's divided into two halves. First half from verse 1 to verse 16, the first
[4:58] half focuses on Paul's talking, focuses on Paul talking. And then the second half from 17 to
[5:05] 38 focuses on Paul traveling. And then secondly, Paul's talking. Now, in first, the traveling,
[5:11] we saw that he traveled to quite a few places. The Bible gave only one place a certain focus.
[5:16] That is what happened through us, where the gentleman was hearing the word of God and fell asleep.
[5:23] That to let us know sleeping is not good. Sometimes sleeping at the wrong time is not good,
[5:30] especially when we should be feeding spiritually. So the scripture focuses on that. But then it
[5:35] went on to say Paul's final destination was Jerusalem. Okay. He was coming from Achaia,
[5:42] Corinth, this territory. But when he found out that some people, the Jews wanted to kill him,
[5:50] he had to change his route, change his course, sorry, and went back up through Macedonia. He was
[5:56] actually going that way. But he had to go back up through Macedonia all the way to Troas. Okay. So from
[6:03] Troas, he sailed and came through, he didn't go to Ephesus. He passed through Ephesus and stopped at
[6:12] Melitos. Okay. According to verse 16. So he stopped at Melitos. But he really had a heart for the church
[6:20] of Ephesus because the church of Ephesus spent a lot of time. I think that's where he spent most time
[6:26] in, according to Acts chapter 19, verse 11, for two years in a school of Tyrannos. He taught them,
[6:33] verse 10, they said, all Asia had a word. So he really had a heart for the church of Ephesus. But he actually
[6:41] was in a hurry to Jerusalem because he wanted to be there for Pentecost. So he didn't have time. Now, many
[6:49] scholars believe he was on a ship from, or a boat from Troas, and the boat was going to Syria. But then the boat
[6:59] had to dock for 24 hours in Melitos and then continued the journey. So when the boat stopped, he couldn't travel,
[7:07] he couldn't go to Ephesus because it would be out of time. So he rather, verse 17 says that he signed for the
[7:14] elders of the church. So from Melitos, now, the distance between Melitos to Ephesus is about 30 miles.
[7:24] And he called for the elders to come. He asked them to come and see him. So it's not too far, but it's a
[7:29] distance to walk. And so now let's go to the, having understood Melitos, let's go back to the text in
[7:35] verse 17. Acts chapter 20, verse 17 says that, and from Melitos, he sent to Ephesus and called the
[7:44] elders of the church, the elders of the church. Let's all say the elders of the church. He didn't
[7:52] need everybody. He didn't need everybody. He only needed the elders because if the elders are in good
[8:01] shape, the churches will be in good shape. The state of any church is at the behest or the mercy
[8:10] of the leadership. If the leadership is given to praying, the church will be a praying church.
[8:18] If the leadership is given to reading, the church will be a reading church. If the leadership is given
[8:23] to teaching, the church will be well-taught church. If the leadership is given to evangelism or
[8:31] souls or passion towards God, the church will be a God-passioned church. If the leadership is given
[8:38] to materialism, the church will be a very materialistic church. If the puppet is hot,
[8:47] the pews cannot be cold. If the pews are hot, the puppet cannot eventually be hot because of the
[8:54] heat in the pews. No. The condition of the puppet determines the temperature of the church.
[9:00] The puppet is the regulator of the state of the church. So you said some time ago, you don't choose
[9:09] a church by asking, does the pastor preach? You have to ask, what does he preach? The content of
[9:18] preaching is more important than just the act of preaching. What is taught will determine what will
[9:26] be caught from God? Our teaching determines the strength of the believer. Listen, let me tell you
[9:34] something. If we only preach, God will bless you. God is blessed every day. That's what they're preaching.
[9:42] It's not healthy preaching. It's like always eating ice cream.
[9:46] We have to prepare the church also to feel, even when you go through difficult times, even
[9:55] if you go through bereavement, it's part of life. Losses are also part of life, much as gains
[10:02] are part of life. Else, if we don't prepare the congregation, when losses and danger and
[10:11] trouble and affliction comes, they'll begin to say, Heli, Heli, God has blessed him. I'm
[10:17] now not going to church again because I'm done with this church thing. I've been coming to
[10:22] church for so long and I still don't have a job. Who told you you're in church so you can
[10:26] have a job? Church is not meant to get you a job. It's your schooling, your job search,
[10:32] your education. So go look for a job. Go come and look for a job in church. And now the preachers
[10:43] have become job distributors. Wealth distributors. You've always wanted wealth. You've always
[10:54] wanted nice girls. That's why you found out that that's another way of getting, watch this,
[11:06] what you've always wanted. Your carnal desires, that is what is killing the modern day charismatic
[11:13] church. Saturated with people who are in for what they are going to get. Gain is not godliness,
[11:23] but godliness with contentment is great. Don't just be looking for marriage. Look for God.
[11:39] So that if this relationship is going to cost me my work with God, I'm happy to walk away from the
[11:48] potential marriage so I can keep my God. Then you are talking about pure Christianity.
[11:57] So what is weakening the church is not gifted pastors. We have so many great orators in our modern day times.
[12:11] They are everywhere on the screens. Very good. Very good. But give some of them your ears for a year.
[12:24] And you realize that you never heard anything the Spirit is saying to the church.
[12:30] You had what you've always wanted to hear.
[12:33] You keep hearing, but you keep remaining empty.
[12:40] He called for the elders of the church.
[12:46] In Acts chapter 15 verse 2, it says they went to see the elders.
[12:51] Acts chapter 15 verse 4, the elders.
[12:54] Acts chapter 15 verse 6 spoke about the elders.
[12:57] Acts chapter 11 verse 30, look at that one.
[12:59] Acts 11 verse 30, the Bible says that which also they did and sent it to the elders.
[13:08] They did collections, financial collections, if you read the verse.
[13:11] The church in Jerusalem needed money because they had some crisis.
[13:15] There was like general crisis there, so amnesty had to go there.
[13:19] And so Paul and Barnabas, they asked the churches that were in the diaspora to make contributions and donations
[13:26] to send it to the church in Jerusalem.
[13:29] Jerusalem was in trouble in crisis.
[13:32] But they were thinking about the church.
[13:33] So they collected it.
[13:34] And when they were going to send the resources and the money, they didn't send it to financiers.
[13:40] They sent it to the elders.
[13:42] So that tells you, notice this, one of the roles of the elders was to also manage the finances of the church.
[13:47] They sent it to the elders to distribute so that everybody can be used properly.
[13:56] And so you see elders, you keep seeing elders.
[13:59] I like the way Peter.
[14:00] Peter says, 1 Peter 5 verse 1, who also am an elder.
[14:05] He was an apostle.
[14:06] You see, he was an apostle.
[14:07] But in the local church, he sees himself as an elder.
[14:10] The elders who are amongst you, I exalt.
[14:14] I who am a fellow elder.
[14:19] This is an apostle talking.
[14:20] But he said, I am a fellow elder.
[14:23] So when it comes to, watch this, when it comes to leading, strengthening, feeding the local church,
[14:31] it is not necessarily the job of the apostle.
[14:35] It's the job of the elders.
[14:37] The apostle has a bigger oversight over a certain jurisdiction or over the doctrines generally.
[14:46] But it is the elders' responsibility to make sure the church is being taken care of.
[14:54] And so three main things the elders are responsible for.
[14:59] The elders are to feed and to lead.
[15:03] Number two, the elders are to direct the church.
[15:08] So lead and to feed are to direct and to defend.
[15:14] That's why every elder's responsibility is to keep an eye on the state of the church.
[15:20] Who is saying what?
[15:21] Whatever is going on in the church is the responsibility of the elders.
[15:25] So elders are to feed and to lead.
[15:30] To direct and to defend.
[15:34] To protect and to provide for the flock.
[15:39] One, feed and lead.
[15:40] Two, direct and defend.
[15:42] Three, protect and provide.
[15:46] Pastor, what do you mean by elders?
[15:47] What's the difference between elders?
[15:50] Different between pastor?
[15:51] Different between bishop?
[15:53] So what are these titles?
[15:56] Because why didn't he call for the bishops of the church?
[15:59] Because bishops are bigger or bigger shops.
[16:04] Bishops are big shops, isn't it?
[16:07] So why didn't he call for the big shops of the church?
[16:11] Why didn't he call for apostles?
[16:14] Because they were the apostles.
[16:16] So that one is obvious.
[16:17] Why didn't he call for pastors?
[16:18] All right.
[16:19] The Greek word translated elder is presbyteros.
[16:25] Presbyteros.
[16:26] We get the word presbytery from.
[16:28] And we get the word presbyterian.
[16:30] So the presbyterian church is led by elders.
[16:34] Okay.
[16:34] And so presbyterian.
[16:36] Maybe since I've said it, I need to just speak about that.
[16:40] And then I'm going to do something.
[16:42] I'm going to jump ahead and pick a verse there.
[16:45] And then come back because I've already touched on this matter.
[16:47] Does that make sense?
[16:48] Yes.
[16:49] But before I go and explain elders, bishops, and pastors,
[16:53] before I go on to explain that,
[16:55] let me just draw your attention to James chapter 5, verse 14.
[16:58] First Peter chapter 3, verse 18.
[17:01] First Peter chapter 5, verse 5.
[17:03] James chapter 5, verse 14 says that,
[17:05] is anybody sick amongst you?
[17:07] What should you do?
[17:09] Go for the elders of the church.
[17:11] The elders of the church.
[17:12] They kind of govern every local church.
[17:15] Okay.
[17:16] In fact, in Acts chapter 14, verse 23, it says that,
[17:19] and when they had ordained elders in every church,
[17:24] and had prayed and fasted,
[17:25] they commended them to the Lord whom they believed.
[17:28] So every church is supposed to have some seniors who overlook,
[17:32] but see the church.
[17:33] Because new believers keep coming in.
[17:35] And so that's the only way the church continues.
[17:38] But the job of the elders is to feed and lead,
[17:41] to protect and provide, to defend and direct.
[17:45] This is very important.
[17:46] So they appointed elders in every church.
[17:49] In Titus chapter 1, verse 5, it said,
[17:51] for this cause I left you in great,
[17:52] that you should set in order the things that are lacking,
[17:56] and appoint elders in every city.
[18:00] Appoint them.
[18:01] We need elders to make sure that they look after the church.
[18:04] So churches are looked after by elders.
[18:08] Elders.
[18:09] So long as God's program is concerned.
[18:12] Elders.
[18:13] Peter calls himself elder as well.
[18:15] First Timothy 4.14.
[18:16] Do not neglect the gift that is in you,
[18:18] which was given to you by God.
[18:21] So you went to the forest and fasted and fasted and retreated,
[18:25] and God gave you the gift.
[18:26] He says, it was given to you by prophecy,
[18:29] with the laying on of the hands of eldership.
[18:32] Now, did he say elders?
[18:34] Eldership is like a body.
[18:37] Another translation we use presbytery.
[18:40] The Akinjeb uses presbytery.
[18:42] See, I told you that.
[18:43] Elder.
[18:44] Presbyteros.
[18:44] So presbytery.
[18:45] A group of leaders.
[18:47] They laid their hands on you,
[18:49] and then the gift of God came upon you.
[18:52] Wow.
[18:53] So you see how important the elders are
[18:55] when it comes to governing the church
[18:57] and taking care of the church.
[18:59] Now, having said that,
[19:01] elders, bishops, and pastors.
[19:05] Acts chapter 20.
[19:06] Look at verse 28.
[19:08] That scripture, 28, is so heavy.
[19:10] I pray I might be able to get there,
[19:11] but because I'm talking about elders, let me.
[19:13] It says that, therefore, take it to yourselves.
[19:15] Who was he talking to?
[19:17] Remember, look at verse 17.
[19:19] From Melitia he sent to Ephesus
[19:21] and called for the elders.
[19:23] And he started talking to the elders.
[19:25] After explaining a few things to them,
[19:27] in the verse 20, he said,
[19:28] therefore, you elders,
[19:30] take it to yourselves,
[19:31] and not just you.
[19:32] And the flock,
[19:34] and all the flock,
[19:35] among which the Holy Spirit
[19:38] has made you over.
[19:41] I thought you were an elder, yes.
[19:43] So the elders are overseers.
[19:46] The Holy Spirit has made you overseers of the church.
[19:49] The Greek word translated overseer
[19:52] is episkopos.
[19:55] Episkopos.
[19:56] Overseer.
[19:57] Scope.
[19:57] Scope is telescope.
[19:58] Telescope.
[19:59] It makes you see tele, isn't it?
[20:04] Telescope.
[20:05] All right?
[20:05] It helps you to see from far.
[20:07] Tele is far.
[20:08] Okay, so television, far.
[20:09] Yeah, telescope.
[20:12] Microscope, small things.
[20:14] Telescope.
[20:14] See from far.
[20:16] All right?
[20:16] So scope has to do with sight.
[20:19] And then epi has to do with surface on top.
[20:23] Epidemius.
[20:24] Right?
[20:25] Epi.
[20:26] So episcope is overseer,
[20:29] like a supervisor at work.
[20:31] Overseer.
[20:31] So it's an elders.
[20:33] The Holy Ghost has made you bishops.
[20:35] That's the word bishop,
[20:36] translated bishop.
[20:38] So those of you who have heard
[20:39] about the episcopal church,
[20:41] they are ruled by bishops.
[20:43] Whilst the Presbyterian church
[20:44] are led by elders,
[20:46] you've got presbyteros
[20:49] and episkopos.
[20:51] All right?
[20:51] So a Presbyterian church,
[20:52] that's where it comes from.
[20:53] Eldership.
[20:54] Episcopal church comes from.
[20:56] So episkopos is a bishop.
[20:58] Presbyteros is an elder.
[21:00] And then there's another word there
[21:01] I want you to see.
[21:02] Verse 28 again.
[21:03] It says that,
[21:04] so elders,
[21:05] what's the job of the elders?
[21:07] The Holy Ghost has made them overseers
[21:09] to shepherd.
[21:12] Everybody say shepherd.
[21:13] Shepherd.
[21:14] That's the word,
[21:15] Greek word is poimona,
[21:17] or poimen,
[21:18] simply,
[21:19] which means
[21:20] pastor,
[21:21] shepherd.
[21:22] A pastor simply means a shepherd.
[21:24] All right?
[21:24] The Lord is my
[21:26] pastor.
[21:28] Yeah.
[21:29] Yeah.
[21:30] So the Greek is,
[21:32] that word shepherd there is pastor.
[21:34] Okay?
[21:35] So this is very important.
[21:37] He called for elders,
[21:38] and he said,
[21:39] Holy Ghost has made you bishops.
[21:42] So,
[21:43] pastor the church.
[21:44] What's the difference between,
[21:45] in this context,
[21:46] what's the difference between a pastor
[21:47] and a bishop?
[21:48] Huh?
[21:51] It's not a trick word now.
[21:52] Come on.
[21:52] Yes.
[21:53] That's a trick question.
[21:54] Same.
[21:56] Okay.
[21:57] What's the difference between an elder
[21:58] and a pastor?
[22:01] It's the same group of people called,
[22:04] their job is to shepherd,
[22:08] pastor.
[22:09] In fact,
[22:09] when you look at the King James version
[22:11] of the verse 20,
[22:12] it doesn't use the word pastor.
[22:14] It doesn't use the word shepherd.
[22:15] It uses the word feed,
[22:17] to feed.
[22:19] So,
[22:20] the pastor is a feeder.
[22:23] Now,
[22:23] if you understand the insight
[22:25] behind that word,
[22:26] Jesus said,
[22:27] John 21,
[22:29] verse 16,
[22:29] Peter,
[22:29] do you love me more than this?
[22:31] Peter said,
[22:31] I love you.
[22:32] He said,
[22:32] feed.
[22:33] Feed my sheep.
[22:34] Turn to my sheep.
[22:35] Feed my lamb.
[22:36] Feed my lamb.
[22:37] The word,
[22:38] when we say a pastor,
[22:39] is someone who actually feeds.
[22:43] By not only feeding,
[22:45] but he cares for.
[22:46] So,
[22:46] look at,
[22:46] go back to verse 28 of Acts,
[22:49] and let's read it from the amplified version.
[22:53] It will put some words in there.
[22:54] Take care and be on guard for yourselves
[22:57] and for the whole flock over which
[22:59] the Holy Spirit has appointed you as bishop.
[23:02] To shepherd,
[23:04] and the shepherd means to tend,
[23:06] to feed,
[23:07] to guide.
[23:08] So,
[23:08] to feed the flock of God.
[23:10] Do you know what I'm doing right now
[23:12] is the feeding aspect?
[23:13] Yes.
[23:13] Let me take it a little deeper,
[23:16] or further.
[23:17] There is a slight difference,
[23:20] even though not a difference.
[23:22] Okay,
[23:23] let me put it this way.
[23:23] Not every teaching produces feeding.
[23:29] Are you getting what I'm saying?
[23:30] Yes.
[23:30] Yes.
[23:30] Yes.
[23:30] Yes.
[23:31] He said,
[23:32] feed the flock of God.
[23:33] Now,
[23:34] that word,
[23:35] feed the,
[23:35] what does that mean?
[23:37] Does it mean we should bring food here?
[23:39] When you come,
[23:39] we should be feeding?
[23:40] No.
[23:41] Man must not live by,
[23:43] what do you do to bread?
[23:44] You use it for barfing?
[23:46] What's bread meant for?
[23:47] Eat.
[23:48] Okay.
[23:49] Bread,
[23:49] bread,
[23:49] bread is for feeding.
[23:53] Bread is for eating.
[23:55] And the Bible says,
[23:56] Matthew 4,
[23:56] 4,
[23:57] 4,
[23:57] 4,
[23:57] 4,
[23:57] 4,
[23:57] 4,
[23:58] man must not live by bread alone,
[24:00] but also by every word.
[24:02] So,
[24:02] that means the word of God is also supposed to be for feeding.
[24:07] Now,
[24:07] that's so important.
[24:09] So,
[24:09] the main,
[24:11] primary job of a pastor,
[24:14] of a shepherd,
[24:15] of the people of God,
[24:17] he said that it's the church of God,
[24:19] but he has trusted you to feed his church with the word of God.
[24:26] You can be teaching,
[24:28] it doesn't mean you are feeding.
[24:30] What is the difference?
[24:32] Because Nicolaitans also teach.
[24:37] Jezebel also teaches.
[24:40] Revelation chapter 2,
[24:42] verse 14,
[24:43] Balaam was teaching.
[24:44] Look at this.
[24:45] But I have a few things against you,
[24:47] because you have those who hold the,
[24:49] give us a different,
[24:50] maybe NIV or better,
[24:52] the doctrine there means the teaching.
[24:54] Who hold the teaching,
[24:55] you see that,
[24:56] in the church,
[24:57] this is talking to the church of,
[24:58] the church of Pergamos.
[25:00] In the church,
[25:01] in the church,
[25:01] they hold the teachings,
[25:03] of Balaam.
[25:05] Verse 15,
[25:06] talks about the teachings,
[25:07] of the Nicolaitans.
[25:10] And then,
[25:11] in verse 20,
[25:12] Jezebel also chose,
[25:14] made herself profited,
[25:15] by her teaching.
[25:17] So,
[25:20] you see,
[25:21] Jezebel,
[25:21] Jezebel,
[25:21] Jezebel,
[25:22] false prophetess,
[25:24] was also a teacher.
[25:26] He could teach.
[25:28] Balaam could teach.
[25:29] Nicolaitans could teach.
[25:31] Jezebel could teach.
[25:33] And even further,
[25:34] in verse 24,
[25:35] also,
[25:35] he talks about,
[25:36] the deep things,
[25:38] of the devil himself.
[25:39] Yes.
[25:40] The deep things.
[25:41] You have learned,
[25:42] Satan's so-called,
[25:43] deep secrets.
[25:44] That's teachings.
[25:46] So,
[25:46] for our teachings,
[25:47] that don't feed.
[25:50] Teachings.
[25:50] Teaching,
[25:51] communicating information,
[25:53] to the minds of people.
[25:54] It's just,
[25:55] information.
[25:56] When you come to church,
[25:57] we are not just,
[25:58] to give you information.
[26:00] We are supposed to feed you,
[26:02] with the word of God.
[26:03] So,
[26:04] the word of God,
[26:04] comes alive.
[26:05] You begin to understand,
[26:07] the word of God properly.
[26:08] And you begin to assimilate.
[26:10] The more you take in,
[26:11] the word of God,
[26:12] the more you are taking,
[26:13] in the life of God.
[26:14] The more you are taking,
[26:15] in Zoe.
[26:16] God himself.
[26:17] And so,
[26:18] and that one can be done,
[26:20] by somebody,
[26:21] not who is just educated,
[26:23] but by somebody,
[26:24] who himself,
[26:25] has been feeding,
[26:26] from God.
[26:27] And has been mandated,
[26:29] by God.
[26:30] To feed the flock.
[26:31] So,
[26:32] does that make sense,
[26:32] when he said,
[26:33] he sent for those,
[26:34] who are supposed to be feeding.
[26:35] When he got to Melitus,
[26:40] he wanted,
[26:41] the church of Ephesus,
[26:44] was so important,
[26:45] when Jesus was writing a letter,
[26:47] to the churches,
[26:49] the first one,
[26:50] was to the,
[26:50] Revelation chapter 2,
[26:52] verse 1 and 2,
[26:53] to the angel,
[26:54] of the church of Ephesus,
[26:55] right?
[26:56] That's the first,
[26:57] and he said,
[26:58] Jesus told them,
[26:59] in the verse 4,
[27:00] he said,
[27:01] that you have to,
[27:02] he says that,
[27:03] nevertheless,
[27:03] I have something against you.
[27:05] You have left your first love.
[27:06] That church was a very good church.
[27:09] That church was a very good church,
[27:11] but over a period of time,
[27:13] the strength of the word of God,
[27:14] they are passing from God,
[27:15] begin,
[27:16] even in the first century.
[27:18] Jesus had to,
[27:19] before,
[27:20] 100 years,
[27:21] after Jesus had left,
[27:22] the church started dying.
[27:23] Ephesus.
[27:24] So Jesus had to write a letter,
[27:25] he said,
[27:25] that you have left your first love.
[27:28] He said,
[27:28] I have something against you.
[27:30] You have left your first love.
[27:32] Timothy was the bishop,
[27:33] or the pastor,
[27:34] over the church of Ephesus,
[27:36] called Paul,
[27:37] left Timothy there too.
[27:38] And when Paul was leaving,
[27:39] that's why he wrote this,
[27:40] he said,
[27:41] you are not going to see my face again.
[27:43] And what I'm concerned about,
[27:45] is not how big the church is going to grow,
[27:47] but what I'm concerned about,
[27:49] is I'm going to warn you.
[27:50] So Paul had a message for the Ephesus church,
[27:55] because he told them,
[27:56] you can't,
[27:56] you won't see my face again,
[27:58] but the church must continue.
[28:01] The church must continue.
[28:03] And so,
[28:04] he called them,
[28:05] those who feared,
[28:07] those who are supposed to be,
[28:08] taking care of the church,
[28:09] feeding the church,
[28:10] guiding the church,
[28:11] and he told them,
[28:11] let's see what he told them.
[28:13] And when they were,
[28:14] verse 18,
[28:15] when they were come to him,
[28:17] he said unto them,
[28:18] ye know,
[28:19] from the first day,
[28:20] that I came into Asia,
[28:23] after what manner,
[28:24] I have been with you all,
[28:27] at all seasons.
[28:28] He began to tell them,
[28:31] his lifestyle.
[28:33] Pastors,
[28:34] listen to this very carefully,
[28:36] pastors are actually,
[28:38] not celebrities.
[28:42] They are not celebrities.
[28:44] Yes,
[28:46] in a certain sense,
[28:47] you might call,
[28:48] certain type of pastors,
[28:50] who are so big,
[28:52] international.
[28:53] But,
[28:54] a pastor is making,
[28:56] a devastating error,
[28:58] if,
[28:58] celebrity,
[28:59] mindset,
[29:00] takes over his thinking.
[29:02] People can,
[29:03] decide to treat you,
[29:04] as a celebrity,
[29:05] but don't take,
[29:06] see yourself,
[29:07] as a celebrity.
[29:09] Why am I saying it?
[29:10] He said,
[29:10] you know my man,
[29:11] a lot of celebrities,
[29:11] you don't even see them.
[29:12] Because,
[29:14] they have to protect,
[29:15] that aura.
[29:16] You know,
[29:17] that aura.
[29:17] So,
[29:17] if a celebrity,
[29:18] keeps coming and hanging around,
[29:20] after some time,
[29:21] the aura is gone.
[29:23] Yeah.
[29:24] Now,
[29:25] that's part of PR,
[29:26] for celebrities.
[29:28] You have to protect,
[29:29] the image,
[29:30] and the aura,
[29:31] so you don't see them anywhere,
[29:32] anyhow.
[29:33] Watch this.
[29:34] He said,
[29:34] you know my manner of life.
[29:36] One of the signs,
[29:37] of effective pastoring,
[29:39] is when people,
[29:40] have access to,
[29:40] they know you.
[29:42] They know you.
[29:43] They saw you,
[29:44] at a restaurant too.
[29:45] They saw you,
[29:46] at Tesco too.
[29:47] That's why,
[29:48] local churches,
[29:49] tend to be very important.
[29:51] So,
[29:51] he told them that,
[29:52] you know,
[29:53] my manner of life.
[29:55] Give us a,
[29:55] he said that,
[29:57] you know,
[29:57] from the first day,
[29:58] I came to Asia.
[29:59] You remember Asia?
[30:01] All Asia,
[30:01] I heard the word of God,
[30:02] in Ephesus.
[30:03] Yeah,
[30:03] from,
[30:03] so Ephesus was,
[30:04] in what manner,
[30:06] I always lived,
[30:07] amongst you.
[30:09] Not that I lived somewhere,
[30:10] and just come,
[30:11] appear and go.
[30:12] Make an appearance,
[30:13] and go.
[30:14] Make an appearance.
[30:15] That is why,
[30:15] I want to say something,
[30:16] to congregation members,
[30:18] who are,
[30:18] who are not here,
[30:20] by some way.
[30:21] You don't give,
[30:23] more relevance,
[30:24] to guest speakers,
[30:25] over your pastors.
[30:28] Because,
[30:29] that's,
[30:31] that's what is killing the church.
[30:33] That's celebrating.
[30:33] And some pastors do,
[30:35] every week,
[30:36] you have to have a,
[30:37] big name,
[30:37] coming to your church.
[30:38] Big name.
[30:39] Big names,
[30:40] don't build the church.
[30:41] It's the name,
[30:42] that builds the church.
[30:47] The name,
[30:48] and sound doctrine,
[30:49] and the pastor's,
[30:50] prayer life,
[30:51] and a few things,
[30:52] what I was talking about.
[30:53] The pastor's,
[30:54] personal life,
[30:55] spiritual life,
[30:57] prayer life.
[30:58] But,
[30:58] why are you telling people,
[30:59] to read the Bible?
[31:00] But you don't read it.
[31:03] Why are you telling people,
[31:03] to give?
[31:04] But you don't give.
[31:06] There will not be,
[31:07] effective prayer,
[31:08] in the church,
[31:09] if the,
[31:10] leaders,
[31:11] don't attend,
[31:12] those prayer meetings.
[31:14] Anything,
[31:14] the leaders are part of,
[31:16] it tells the congregation,
[31:17] is important.
[31:19] So,
[31:20] it says that,
[31:20] you know my mind,
[31:21] verse 19 says that,
[31:22] serving the Lord,
[31:24] oh,
[31:25] oh,
[31:26] Paul.
[31:26] He said,
[31:27] you know my life,
[31:28] the way I've been,
[31:29] listen to how,
[31:29] he started,
[31:30] pastor,
[31:30] see how he started,
[31:31] he started talking about himself.
[31:35] The focus of his speech,
[31:37] was himself.
[31:39] But,
[31:39] it's not the best thing to do,
[31:41] when you are talking to people,
[31:42] and you are the main focus,
[31:43] of what you are talking about.
[31:45] So,
[31:45] when a person becomes,
[31:47] a believer,
[31:48] in the early stages,
[31:49] there,
[31:49] God helps you,
[31:50] to get the focus,
[31:51] of yourself.
[31:52] Stop talking about,
[31:53] that's for me,
[31:53] me,
[31:54] me,
[31:54] I'm like this,
[31:55] I'm like,
[31:55] no,
[31:55] no,
[31:56] no,
[31:56] no,
[31:57] no.
[31:58] It must move from me,
[31:59] to Christ.
[32:01] Christ,
[32:02] Christ,
[32:02] Christ.
[32:03] Now,
[32:03] when your life has become,
[32:05] Christ-centered,
[32:07] you cannot be talking about,
[32:08] me,
[32:09] in Christ.
[32:09] Follow me,
[32:10] as I follow Christ.
[32:11] Christ.
[32:12] So,
[32:12] Paul has gotten to that stage,
[32:15] where he's now telling them,
[32:16] see my life,
[32:17] he said,
[32:18] it's not me,
[32:18] but I'm actually,
[32:19] serving the Lord,
[32:21] with all,
[32:24] my cashanda,
[32:25] my handa,
[32:26] humility.
[32:28] There are some people,
[32:29] who are not supposed to be,
[32:30] giving titles in a church,
[32:31] because it will kill them.
[32:34] It will kill them.
[32:36] It will kill them.
[32:36] As soon as,
[32:37] this one is a minister,
[32:38] or this one is a deacon,
[32:39] as soon as,
[32:41] someone becomes,
[32:42] a pastor,
[32:43] a minister,
[32:44] a reverend,
[32:45] you make a mistake,
[32:45] you don't address it as reverend.
[32:47] But,
[32:48] the point here is that,
[32:50] pure,
[32:51] Christian leadership,
[32:52] thrives on humility.
[32:56] Humility.
[32:57] You are too much important.
[32:59] When,
[33:00] Christian leaders become so important,
[33:02] the work is about to crash.
[33:05] Become so important.
[33:07] This is like,
[33:08] you,
[33:08] you know sometimes,
[33:09] some of the pastors,
[33:10] it's like,
[33:11] we want to be treated like,
[33:12] we died to save the church.
[33:15] I died for the church.
[33:20] Yes,
[33:20] shed my blood to save the church.
[33:24] Pride is not what you are wearing.
[33:27] Pride is a state of your heart.
[33:30] Pride is a state of your heart.
[33:31] So,
[33:32] that's why I quoted,
[33:33] the first Peter chapter three,
[33:34] verse eight.
[33:34] You know,
[33:34] I quoted it and it was supposed to come here,
[33:36] for the pride matter.
[33:38] He says,
[33:38] finally,
[33:39] all of you,
[33:39] be of one mind,
[33:40] having compassion,
[33:42] one from another.
[33:43] Love as brothers.
[33:45] Let's all say that together.
[33:46] Love as brothers.
[33:47] Say it again.
[33:48] Love as brothers.
[33:49] So,
[33:50] that thing,
[33:50] I will never talk to this person again.
[33:52] I will never,
[33:53] that's not how brothers behave.
[33:56] Brothers the same as brothers and sisters.
[33:58] Okay.
[33:59] Love as brothers.
[34:00] Sister,
[34:01] love him,
[34:02] but us.
[34:04] Brothers.
[34:06] So,
[34:08] but humility.
[34:09] Let's go back to the,
[34:10] the first Peter chapter three,
[34:11] verse eight.
[34:12] Love as brothers,
[34:14] be tender hearted,
[34:16] be careful.
[34:16] Give us NIV.
[34:18] It says,
[34:18] love as brothers,
[34:19] be compassionate,
[34:21] or be,
[34:21] okay,
[34:22] live in harmony with one another.
[34:24] That's a good point.
[34:26] Live in harmony with one another.
[34:29] Be sympathetic.
[34:30] Love as brothers.
[34:31] Be compassionate and humble.
[34:36] I'll say this one is not my type.
[34:38] How dare you talk,
[34:38] do you know who I am?
[34:39] How dare you talk to me like that?
[34:41] You know,
[34:41] it's a sign of lack of spirituality.
[34:45] It's a sign of lack of spirituality.
[34:47] So,
[34:47] can you imagine,
[34:48] he says that,
[34:49] I have saved Jesus Christ with humility.
[34:54] Things that sometimes in my natural self,
[34:57] I should react to,
[34:58] Paul said I didn't react to,
[34:59] because it's not necessary.
[35:00] How can,
[35:01] how do you allow him to talk to you like that?
[35:02] How can he treat you like that?
[35:04] So,
[35:04] it's okay.
[35:05] You ignore it,
[35:05] because you are,
[35:06] it's not important.
[35:08] It's not important.
[35:09] You can let some things pass.
[35:11] You can let some things pass.
[35:14] Save with humility.
[35:16] I'm looking forward to the day
[35:18] when somebody who is a chief executive
[35:21] of a multinational company,
[35:23] big,
[35:24] and you are serving as usher,
[35:26] not even head of usher.
[35:27] Serving simply.
[35:28] And,
[35:29] no one knows,
[35:31] some of us,
[35:32] your car changed,
[35:33] and then you say,
[35:33] we should change your seat in church.
[35:35] Since you got,
[35:36] we should give you your own specialty.
[35:46] Paul,
[35:47] okay,
[35:48] let's start.
[35:48] Paul said,
[35:49] I think we should look at Philippians chapter 2,
[35:51] verse 3.
[35:52] There's something good there.
[35:53] Philippians chapter 2,
[35:54] verse 3.
[35:55] Let nothing be done through selfish ambition
[35:57] or conceit,
[35:59] but in lowliness of mind,
[36:03] let each esteem others.
[36:05] Wow.
[36:06] Wow.
[36:08] Let each other esteem others
[36:10] better than themselves.
[36:14] Esteem others.
[36:15] That's serious.
[36:17] Esteem,
[36:18] why are you saying,
[36:18] I'm offended.
[36:19] I didn't like the way they talked to me.
[36:20] I didn't like,
[36:21] they met the leaders,
[36:22] and the way I was addressed
[36:23] before all the other people.
[36:26] Esteem,
[36:27] I knew you were.
[36:30] Esteem,
[36:31] you are too sensitive.
[36:36] You are too sensitive
[36:37] about who you are
[36:39] and your feelings.
[36:42] God can't take you far
[36:43] for his work.
[36:45] You are too sensitive.
[36:47] Your image,
[36:48] your identity,
[36:50] how people see you,
[36:51] how people address you,
[36:52] how you feel
[36:54] amongst people,
[36:54] it's so important to you.
[36:56] That's why God can anoint you.
[37:01] That's why God can use you mightily.
[37:04] You have to serve.
[37:05] Many Paul are serving,
[37:06] but not with humility.
[37:08] Paul said,
[37:09] I serve.
[37:10] See,
[37:10] so before he charges them,
[37:12] he puts his life,
[37:13] he said,
[37:14] you are witnesses
[37:14] of the way I've been living.
[37:16] I've been serving.
[37:17] You know it's nothing I'm serving,
[37:18] but Jesus,
[37:19] I'm serving with all humility,
[37:21] with tears.
[37:22] What's the meaning of that?
[37:25] Tears?
[37:25] Yes.
[37:26] Paul was easily crying.
[37:27] He's like,
[37:28] are weeping prophets?
[37:28] Why is Pastor crying?
[37:35] Pastor Paul,
[37:36] Apostle Paul,
[37:36] why are you crying?
[37:38] Can I tell you why
[37:39] he used to cry?
[37:40] Four reasons why
[37:41] he used to cry.
[37:45] Oh,
[37:46] you don't know what to know?
[37:48] I'll tell you.
[37:50] Four reasons why
[37:51] Apostle Paul used to cry.
[37:53] Number one,
[37:55] he used to cry
[37:55] for those who did not know Jesus.
[37:59] Cry for them.
[38:00] Romans chapter nine,
[38:01] verse two,
[38:02] and verse three.
[38:03] Look at Romans chapter nine.
[38:05] That I have great sorrow
[38:06] and continual grief
[38:08] in my heart.
[38:10] For I could wish
[38:12] that I myself
[38:13] were a curse
[38:14] from Christ
[38:15] for my brethren,
[38:17] my countrymen,
[38:18] according to the flesh,
[38:19] for the Jews,
[38:20] for the Israelites.
[38:21] He said,
[38:22] I used to cry for them
[38:23] that they would be saved.
[38:24] Even if it means
[38:26] that I'll be lost.
[38:29] Paul used to,
[38:30] yeah,
[38:31] my country,
[38:31] verse two.
[38:32] Let's look at NIV.
[38:33] Let's start from verse one
[38:34] so it can make sense, okay?
[38:35] Verse one.
[38:36] I speak the truth in Christ.
[38:38] I'm not lying.
[38:39] My conscience confirms
[38:40] it in the Holy Ghost.
[38:42] I have great sorrow
[38:43] and unceasing anguish
[38:44] in my heart.
[38:45] These are the things
[38:46] that break his heart.
[38:47] What is it?
[38:48] For his fellow countrymen
[38:50] to be saved.
[38:51] Number two,
[38:52] reason why Paul used
[38:54] to struggle.
[38:55] I think I'll give you
[38:55] a scripture for you
[38:56] to tell me why.
[38:57] Second Corinthians
[38:58] chapter two,
[38:59] verse four.
[39:00] For out of much affliction
[39:01] and anguish of heart
[39:02] I wrote to you
[39:03] with many tears.
[39:06] You see that?
[39:07] With many tears.
[39:08] Not that you should be grieved,
[39:09] but that you might
[39:11] know the love
[39:12] which I have
[39:13] so abundantly
[39:15] for you.
[39:16] When you studied
[39:17] the test very carefully,
[39:19] he was talking about
[39:20] the way the people
[39:21] were not growing.
[39:21] The spiritual immaturity
[39:24] of the people
[39:25] was breaking his heart.
[39:26] So he used to talk
[39:27] to them with tears.
[39:29] He would be grieving
[39:30] after the people
[39:30] are not growing.
[39:31] Listen,
[39:32] this one is for
[39:33] pastors as well.
[39:34] Don't be so excited
[39:35] because people
[39:36] are coming to church.
[39:38] It is a good thing
[39:39] that people are,
[39:40] God is adding.
[39:41] So we should celebrate that.
[39:43] But your excitement
[39:45] should be more
[39:45] when people are growing.
[39:47] It is hard
[39:48] to really pastor
[39:50] spiritual babes.
[39:51] some people
[39:53] refuse to grow
[39:54] because,
[39:55] you know,
[39:56] there are some children
[39:56] you are feeding
[39:57] that they will
[39:58] take the food.
[40:01] So you are
[40:02] trying to feed them,
[40:05] but they will
[40:05] take the food.
[40:06] Am I preaching at all?
[40:09] Then watch this.
[40:11] What betize you
[40:12] a pastor
[40:12] who the member's
[40:14] attendance
[40:15] is more important
[40:16] than their spirituality
[40:17] to you?
[40:19] The attendance
[40:20] of a member,
[40:21] the fact that
[40:22] the members
[40:23] are coming
[40:23] is more important
[40:24] to you
[40:24] than people
[40:25] being Christ-like,
[40:27] people getting
[40:28] to know Christ more.
[40:29] So if you have to
[40:30] correct the person
[40:31] and you think that
[40:31] this person
[40:32] will not enjoy,
[40:34] you can tell
[40:34] you practically
[40:35] are raising
[40:36] an unbeliever
[40:37] under your leadership.
[40:39] And yet you can't
[40:39] deal with it
[40:40] because
[40:40] he won't come to church.
[40:43] And the unbeliever
[40:44] is creating
[40:44] so much problems
[40:45] and they are
[40:46] not changing.
[40:47] They are not changing.
[40:48] Correct them.
[40:50] Help them.
[40:51] If you cannot
[40:52] be corrected
[40:52] by your so-called pastor,
[40:54] he's not actually
[40:54] pastoring you.
[40:58] He's not pastoring
[40:59] because
[40:59] if he's going
[41:00] to use the word,
[41:01] the word is used
[41:02] for holding
[41:03] to a kiosk.
[41:04] Remember that?
[41:05] It cuts.
[41:05] The word Bible
[41:06] said they were
[41:07] cut to the heart.
[41:10] The word
[41:11] is used,
[41:11] it says that
[41:12] all scripture,
[41:14] 2 Timothy 3,
[41:15] verse 16,
[41:16] all scripture
[41:17] is given
[41:18] by the inspiration
[41:19] of God
[41:20] and it is
[41:22] profitable
[41:22] for teaching,
[41:24] profitable
[41:24] for reproof,
[41:25] for correction,
[41:27] for instruction
[41:27] in righteousness
[41:28] that the man
[41:30] of God
[41:30] will be
[41:31] totally and complete,
[41:33] totally and quick
[41:34] for,
[41:35] I feel like
[41:35] preaching.
[41:36] The word
[41:37] is meant
[41:38] for helping
[41:39] people to become
[41:40] Christ-like.
[41:41] it's not
[41:43] supposed to be
[41:44] used to
[41:45] dictate how
[41:46] you should
[41:46] behave.
[41:47] No,
[41:48] no,
[41:48] no,
[41:48] no.
[41:49] I can't be
[41:49] dictating how
[41:50] you should
[41:50] behave,
[41:51] but I can
[41:52] lovingly teach
[41:53] you what the
[41:53] word says
[41:54] and keep
[41:55] teaching
[41:55] and keep
[41:56] teaching.
[41:57] Pastors
[41:57] should stop
[41:58] trying to
[41:59] force people
[41:59] to do what
[42:00] they want.
[42:02] That's not
[42:02] really pastoring.
[42:03] That's not
[42:04] really pastoring.
[42:05] Wow.
[42:05] So he says,
[42:07] you know my
[42:07] life,
[42:08] how I serve
[42:08] you with
[42:09] humility
[42:10] and in tears.
[42:12] Oh,
[42:12] I didn't even
[42:12] finish the tears.
[42:15] Spiritual
[42:16] maturity.
[42:18] Okay,
[42:19] so why does
[42:20] he cry?
[42:20] Struggling
[42:21] and immature
[42:22] believers
[42:22] make him cry.
[42:24] And we all
[42:24] see it every
[42:25] now and then.
[42:26] But you don't
[42:27] throw your
[42:27] children away
[42:28] because they
[42:29] are not
[42:29] mature.
[42:30] You can't
[42:30] throw them
[42:31] away.
[42:31] A pastor
[42:32] cannot be
[42:32] so upset
[42:33] because
[42:33] somebody's
[42:34] character
[42:34] is not
[42:35] changing.
[42:36] So love
[42:36] them.
[42:37] Teach
[42:37] them
[42:37] God's
[42:38] word.
[42:38] Teach
[42:38] them
[42:38] as long
[42:39] as you
[42:40] know
[42:40] they
[42:40] are
[42:40] really
[42:40] born
[42:40] again.
[42:41] But they're
[42:41] just not
[42:42] growing.
[42:42] He says
[42:43] that we may
[42:43] present everyone
[42:44] matured.
[42:45] Colossians
[42:46] chapter 1
[42:47] verse 28.
[42:48] Him we
[42:48] preach warning
[42:50] and teaching
[42:50] everyone.
[42:51] Him we
[42:51] preach warning
[42:52] every man
[42:53] and teaching
[42:53] every man
[42:54] in all
[42:54] wisdom that
[42:55] we may
[42:55] present
[42:56] every man
[42:57] perfect.
[42:57] That word
[42:58] perfect is
[42:58] mature.
[42:59] The day of
[42:59] presentation is
[43:00] coming.
[43:00] I'm not going
[43:01] to present
[43:01] a church.
[43:03] I'm not going
[43:03] to present
[43:04] a building.
[43:04] I'm not
[43:05] going to
[43:05] present my
[43:06] programs.
[43:07] I'm going
[43:07] to present
[43:07] the people
[43:08] matured.
[43:10] And that
[43:11] should be
[43:11] the heart
[43:11] of a
[43:12] pastor.
[43:12] So when
[43:13] people are
[43:13] not maturing
[43:13] the pastor's
[43:14] heart must
[43:15] be breaking
[43:15] in tears.
[43:17] Number three
[43:18] is the threat
[43:18] of false
[43:19] teachers.
[43:21] The threat
[43:22] of false
[43:23] teachers.
[43:24] Look at
[43:24] the verse
[43:25] 29.
[43:25] Acts chapter
[43:25] 20.
[43:26] Verse 29.
[43:27] 29.
[43:28] 30.
[43:28] 31.
[43:29] Is someone
[43:29] learning
[43:29] something?
[43:31] The threat
[43:32] is that
[43:32] for I know
[43:33] that after
[43:34] my departure
[43:34] savage wolves
[43:37] will come
[43:37] in amongst
[43:38] you not
[43:39] sparing the
[43:40] flock.
[43:42] He was
[43:42] telling the
[43:42] elders of
[43:43] Ephesus.
[43:44] He said
[43:44] I know
[43:45] after my
[43:45] departure I'm
[43:46] about to go.
[43:46] You will see
[43:47] me again.
[43:48] But I know
[43:48] I'm concerned
[43:49] about the
[43:50] future of the
[43:50] church because
[43:51] savage wolves
[43:53] will come in
[43:54] amongst you
[43:55] not sparing
[43:56] the flock.
[43:57] The next
[43:57] verse.
[43:57] Verse 30.
[43:58] also not
[43:59] only coming
[44:00] from outside
[44:00] also from
[44:01] among
[44:02] yourselves
[44:02] men will
[44:03] rise
[44:04] speaking
[44:05] perfecting
[44:06] to draw
[44:07] away
[44:07] disciples
[44:08] after
[44:08] themselves
[44:09] trying to
[44:11] gain a
[44:12] section of
[44:12] the people.
[44:13] They will
[44:14] rise.
[44:14] Look at
[44:15] the next
[44:15] verse.
[44:16] Therefore
[44:17] watch and
[44:17] remember that
[44:18] for three
[44:19] years I
[44:19] did not
[44:20] see to
[44:20] warn
[44:21] everyone
[44:21] night and
[44:22] day
[44:23] with tears
[44:24] because of
[44:24] the sin.
[44:25] Paul used
[44:28] to cry
[44:29] and shed
[44:29] tears
[44:29] because of
[44:31] false
[44:31] teachers that
[44:32] are about
[44:32] to come
[44:32] in.
[44:34] False
[44:34] teachers used
[44:35] to break
[44:35] his heart.
[44:37] False
[44:37] brethren.
[44:39] False.
[44:40] They are not
[44:41] authentic in
[44:42] Christ.
[44:42] They are not
[44:43] genuine.
[44:43] They are
[44:44] looking for
[44:44] relevance
[44:45] among the
[44:45] congregation.
[44:48] Can I tell
[44:48] you the
[44:49] false reason
[44:49] why I used
[44:49] to cry?
[44:50] Or I should
[44:51] tell you some
[44:52] of the false
[44:53] teachers that
[44:53] rose up
[44:54] after Paul
[44:54] left.
[44:55] It is in
[44:55] the Bible.
[44:57] Six of
[44:57] them were
[44:58] mentioned in
[44:58] the Bible.
[44:59] Yes, in
[44:59] the church
[45:00] of Ephesus.
[45:01] Six.
[45:02] First
[45:02] Timothy
[45:02] chapter 1
[45:03] verse 20.
[45:04] Second
[45:04] Timothy
[45:05] chapter 1
[45:05] verse 15.
[45:06] Two of
[45:07] them are
[45:07] in chapter
[45:07] 1.
[45:08] Look, you
[45:08] see that.
[45:09] He said,
[45:09] of whom
[45:09] are Hymenios
[45:11] and who
[45:12] Alexander.
[45:13] Yes.
[45:14] Who said,
[45:15] I have
[45:15] delivered to
[45:16] Satan.
[45:17] He wrote
[45:17] to Timothy.
[45:18] Timothy was
[45:19] the bishop
[45:19] of the
[45:19] church of
[45:20] Ephesus.
[45:21] Look at
[45:21] chapter 2
[45:22] verse 15.
[45:22] He said,
[45:24] for this
[45:24] you know
[45:25] that all
[45:26] those in
[45:27] Asia have
[45:27] turned away
[45:28] from me,
[45:29] among whom
[45:30] are Phygelius
[45:31] and
[45:32] Homogeneous.
[45:34] Phygelius,
[45:34] so the
[45:35] names are,
[45:36] for those of
[45:36] you who are
[45:36] writing,
[45:37] I think I
[45:38] wrote the
[45:38] name.
[45:39] So we
[45:39] have Hymenios,
[45:41] Alexander,
[45:43] Phygelius,
[45:44] Homogeneous,
[45:44] and then
[45:45] 2 Timothy
[45:47] chapter 2
[45:47] verse 17.
[45:48] No, I'm
[45:48] not saying
[45:49] it.
[45:49] Your
[45:49] Bible is
[45:49] saying
[45:50] it.
[45:50] That's
[45:50] why I
[45:51] make sure
[45:51] you raise
[45:51] your Bible
[45:51] before I
[45:52] preach.
[45:54] Look,
[45:55] 2 Timothy
[45:55] chapter 2
[45:55] verse 17.
[45:56] It says,
[45:58] their message
[45:58] will spread
[45:59] like cancer.
[46:01] You remember
[46:01] Hymenios?
[46:02] And then
[46:02] there's another
[46:03] one.
[46:04] In the
[46:04] first one,
[46:04] they say
[46:05] Hymenios and
[46:05] Alexander.
[46:06] But Hymenios
[46:07] has appeared
[46:07] again.
[46:08] Hymenios and
[46:08] here's another
[46:09] team member.
[46:10] Philetus.
[46:11] Yes.
[46:13] Philetus.
[46:13] Sometimes,
[46:15] suddenly,
[46:15] somebody who
[46:16] is excited
[46:16] in church,
[46:17] you realize
[46:18] they have
[46:18] become cold.
[46:19] They have
[46:20] become like
[46:21] nonchalant about
[46:22] things of God
[46:22] in some way.
[46:23] You have to
[46:24] check Hymenios.
[46:25] Philetus.
[46:26] No, no, no.
[46:27] After pastor,
[46:27] you have to be
[46:28] interested in
[46:29] who spiritual
[46:30] life begins
[46:31] to.
[46:31] No, they
[46:31] are excited
[46:32] about God
[46:33] and everything
[46:33] begins to.
[46:34] So,
[46:35] Philetus,
[46:35] some of you,
[46:36] Philetus,
[46:37] gossip Philetus
[46:38] has affected
[46:39] you.
[46:39] Yes.
[46:41] Gossip Philetus.
[46:42] The things,
[46:43] you used not
[46:44] to think like
[46:44] that.
[46:44] You used not
[46:44] to talk like that.
[46:45] A pastor
[46:46] needs to look
[46:47] out for the
[46:48] welfare of
[46:49] the people.
[46:50] Welfare.
[46:51] Because the
[46:51] thing,
[46:52] the Bible
[46:52] says they
[46:52] are well
[46:53] spread like
[46:53] cancer.
[46:54] It's there.
[46:55] Their message
[46:56] will spread
[46:57] like cancer.
[46:58] So,
[47:00] Hymenios,
[47:00] you see the
[47:01] names there?
[47:02] Hymenios,
[47:03] Alexander,
[47:04] Philetus,
[47:06] Homogenes,
[47:07] Philetus,
[47:08] and there's
[47:08] one Paul.
[47:09] Let me add
[47:09] one more.
[47:10] In the
[47:10] church of
[47:10] Ephesus.
[47:10] Apostle
[47:12] John went
[47:12] to oversee
[47:13] the church
[47:13] when Paul
[47:14] died.
[47:15] Even though
[47:15] Timothy,
[47:16] Apostle
[47:16] John,
[47:17] the one who
[47:17] wrote Revelation,
[47:18] he was in
[47:19] Ephesian church.
[47:20] And he
[47:21] wrote,
[47:21] 3 John
[47:22] verse 9,
[47:23] there's a
[47:23] gentleman
[47:24] called
[47:25] Deotrephus.
[47:26] Yes.
[47:27] Deotrephus.
[47:28] I wrote
[47:29] to the
[47:30] church,
[47:30] but Deotrephus,
[47:31] who love
[47:32] to have
[47:33] the preeminence
[47:33] amongst them,
[47:35] does not
[47:35] receive us.
[47:37] Yeah.
[47:37] Deotrephus.
[47:38] I'm bringing
[47:39] good message.
[47:40] New Living
[47:40] Translation.
[47:41] Let's see how
[47:41] New Living
[47:41] Translation
[47:42] includes it.
[47:43] I wrote
[47:43] to the
[47:44] church about
[47:44] this,
[47:45] but Deotrephus,
[47:46] who love
[47:46] to be the
[47:47] leader,
[47:47] refused to
[47:48] have anything
[47:49] to do
[47:49] with us.
[47:50] Deotrephus.
[47:51] Ephesus
[47:52] church,
[47:53] Deotrephus
[47:53] has now
[47:54] taken over.
[47:56] False
[47:56] teachers.
[47:57] So,
[47:57] do you
[47:57] understand
[47:57] why Paul
[47:58] was crying?
[47:59] He was
[47:59] crying because
[48:00] of false
[48:01] teachers.
[48:01] So,
[48:02] why was he
[48:02] crying?
[48:02] Number one,
[48:03] those who
[48:03] do not know
[48:04] Christ.
[48:04] Number two,
[48:05] struggling and
[48:06] immature
[48:06] believers.
[48:06] Number three,
[48:07] the threat
[48:08] of false
[48:08] teachers.
[48:09] Number four,
[48:10] oh,
[48:10] this one is
[48:11] okay.
[48:11] Let me add
[48:11] number four
[48:12] and finish.
[48:12] Is that
[48:12] okay?
[48:13] Number four
[48:14] is destinies
[48:16] of people
[48:18] who hate
[48:18] the cross.
[48:19] He made
[48:19] them cry.
[48:21] Philippians
[48:22] chapter three
[48:23] verse 18.
[48:24] Let's all
[48:24] read here from
[48:25] the screen.
[48:25] When you
[48:25] finish writing.
[48:27] Is somebody
[48:27] learning something?
[48:29] Let's go.
[48:32] I told you
[48:33] often and
[48:35] I'll tell you
[48:36] with weep,
[48:36] even weeping,
[48:37] that they are
[48:38] the enemies
[48:39] of the,
[48:40] I've been
[48:42] telling you
[48:42] about them.
[48:43] A good
[48:44] pastor must
[48:44] be telling
[48:45] you,
[48:46] warning you,
[48:46] be careful
[48:47] about sad
[48:47] people,
[48:48] be careful
[48:48] about this,
[48:49] be careful,
[48:49] a good
[48:49] pastor.
[48:50] Even weeping,
[48:52] some of us
[48:55] don't know
[48:55] how to weep
[48:55] like Paul,
[48:56] but sometimes
[48:57] when you look
[48:58] at a house,
[48:58] you can tell
[48:59] the pastor
[48:59] is weeping.
[49:00] There are so
[49:01] many different
[49:01] things that
[49:01] make a pastor
[49:02] weep.
[49:02] in 2 Corinthians
[49:04] it said,
[49:04] above all,
[49:05] the daily care
[49:06] of the church.
[49:07] 2 Corinthians
[49:07] 11,
[49:08] 28.
[49:09] It is a
[49:10] major concern
[49:11] of your heart.
[49:11] Anyway,
[49:12] so it says
[49:12] that Philippians
[49:14] chapter 3
[49:14] verse 18,
[49:14] look at verse 19.
[49:16] Enemies of the cross,
[49:17] look at verse 19,
[49:18] it will interest you.
[49:19] Whose end
[49:20] is destruction?
[49:21] Whose God
[49:22] is their belly?
[49:23] Whose glory
[49:23] is their shame?
[49:25] Who set
[49:26] their minds
[49:26] on earthly things?
[49:28] So you see,
[49:28] talking about
[49:29] their destiny,
[49:29] their end,
[49:30] said,
[49:30] I will weep.
[49:31] These people
[49:31] who are,
[49:32] they are enemies
[49:33] of the cross.
[49:34] People like that
[49:35] made Paul
[49:35] weep.
[49:36] Paul would be
[49:37] weeping sometimes
[49:38] if he had had
[49:39] a wife,
[49:39] the wife would say,
[49:40] babe,
[49:41] it's okay,
[49:42] God will vindicate
[49:43] you,
[49:43] it's okay,
[49:44] Paul.
[49:44] It's not that
[49:45] he's sad,
[49:46] but the condition
[49:47] breaks his heart.
[49:48] When you genuinely
[49:49] love Jesus,
[49:50] you will love
[49:51] the church,
[49:51] and if you genuinely
[49:52] love the church,
[49:53] certain things
[49:54] will break your heart.
[49:55] So some things
[49:56] you don't even
[49:56] participate in talking
[49:57] about it,
[49:58] because it breaks
[49:58] your heart.
[49:59] you don't talk
[49:59] about it,
[50:00] you leave it alone.
[50:01] Whether it's true
[50:01] or not,
[50:02] some things
[50:02] break your heart
[50:03] when you genuinely
[50:03] love Jesus.
[50:04] So Paul,
[50:05] in conclusion,
[50:05] Paul said,
[50:06] let's look at
[50:06] what Paul said,
[50:07] he said,
[50:08] you know how
[50:08] I serve with humility
[50:09] and with many tears
[50:10] and temptations
[50:11] which befell me
[50:12] by the lying
[50:13] in weight
[50:14] of the Jews.
[50:15] Did you receive
[50:16] something?
[50:16] Amen.
[50:24] Hallelujah.
