This week, James, Jerah, and Jon are covering Scary Movie, directed by Michael Tiddes, written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez, starring Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall. Together, they discuss the Scary Movie franchise’s nearly thirty years' worth of lore, how under-appreciated Anna Faris is, this episode being its own Scary Movie homage, how good the actor who played little Anna Faris was, maybe missing the actually solid DEI joke, and much, much more! [0:07] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Welcome to black man can't jump in, Hollywood.
[0:09] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Hollywood's sitting.
[0:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Oh, shit, shit.
[0:14] \[SPEAKER_01\]: First off, you don't do, you don't, you don't do lines because, oh, I forgot to say.
[0:19] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Oh, can I say Petra?
[0:21] \[SPEAKER_01\]: No.
[0:22] \[SPEAKER_01\]: No.
[0:23] \[SPEAKER_02\]: No, I don't think I messed it up.
[0:24] \[SPEAKER_03\]: That's how I messed it up.
[0:25] \[SPEAKER_03\]: But also it makes me think that it's a game hit that.
[0:28] \[SPEAKER_03\]: And it was clearly from the movie, but it also sounded so over it.
[0:31] \[SPEAKER_03\]: And it's a huge time.
[0:33] \[SPEAKER_03\]: That's it.
[0:34] \[SPEAKER_03\]: Like I said, take this and do it every twenty five years.
[0:36] \[SPEAKER_02\]: No, I'm a couple.
[0:37] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Like.
[0:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: There were a couple of uncommitted Oshitsons from Shorty.
[0:42] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It was like, I guess I have to do it in this.
[0:45] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This is where they come.
[0:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This is, there was a couple like, all right, I'll do an Oshitson here.
[0:51] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Wow.
[0:51] \[SPEAKER_01\]: It was almost like my intro was a bit uncommitted.
[0:55] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Just kind of like the scary movie.
[0:58] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Oh my god like my transition was uncommitted there.
[1:02] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Oh, that was a transition.
[1:04] \[SPEAKER_02\]: You just said you Exactly, you literally just said the title of the movie in reference to the In reference to the movie.
[1:12] \[SPEAKER_02\]: That's right.
[1:13] \[SPEAKER_01\]: That was yeah.
[1:14] \[SPEAKER_01\]: That Well, you know, I think it's actually apropos and we're gonna talk about why but before
[1:21] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Before we do, I mean, do we, do we, do we talk a little bit about lore?
[1:29] \[SPEAKER_03\]: Oh, I guess we can't say this Gary movie was created by the way, and this Gary movie one and two Yes, movies became incredibly successful Huge hits started almost his own sub genre and the movie franchise was taken away by Harvey Weinstein Who also named the movie he named the movie for them because he liked the title better
[1:54] \[SPEAKER_03\]: uh, uh, after Harvey went to jail.
[1:56] \[SPEAKER_01\]: We did where they going to name it horror movie.
[1:59] \[SPEAKER_01\]: No, so it was going to call.
[2:01] \[SPEAKER_03\]: It was going to, it's a long, it's another long name is like last summer.
[2:05] \[SPEAKER_03\]: I got scared doing Halloween.
[2:07] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Oh, because like, let's just like, uh, you know, don't be a menace in South Central while drinking.
[2:12] \[SPEAKER_03\]: So with something long like that but then Harvey was like scary movies better, but apparently what she's right.
[2:17] \[SPEAKER_03\]: He was right about that He always wanted to call a movie.
[2:20] \[SPEAKER_03\]: I just watched a bunch of videos on Marlin talking about this Harvey always wanted to call a movie scary movie, so this will work.
[2:27] \[SPEAKER_03\]: They liked it But once the movie became successful, he took the right away from them and when he went to jail, they ended up getting scream was originally going to be called scary movie, right?
[2:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Yep, 100%.
[2:36] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Yeah.
[2:37] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Fun.
[2:38] \[SPEAKER_01\]: So the first scary movie came out in the year 2026.
[2:43] \[SPEAKER_01\]: years ago.
[2:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Wow.
[2:44] \[SPEAKER_01\]: It made $278 million worldwide 42 million opening.
[2:51] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Scary movie two didn't do as well.
[2:53] \[SPEAKER_01\]: It made 141 million worldwide, but still pretty successful.
[2:59] \[SPEAKER_01\]: And then of course, they made a scary movie three four and five.
[3:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Wasn't the box office for scare movie two, though
[3:08] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It was like the biggest opening or something for a black.
[3:14] \[SPEAKER_03\]: Director at the time.
[3:15] \[SPEAKER_03\]: I don't know.
[3:16] \[SPEAKER_03\]: Maybe I think scary movie four was the most successful one.
[3:21] \[SPEAKER_01\]: I think let me say scary.
[3:22] \[SPEAKER_01\]: So scary movie.
[3:25] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Three.
[3:26] \[SPEAKER_01\]: 220 million worldwide.
[3:29] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Pretty good.
[3:30] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Gary movie four.
[3:31] \[SPEAKER_01\]: 178 million worldwide.
[3:32] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Scary movie five.
[3:32] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Only 78 million worldwide.
[3:34] \[SPEAKER_01\]: I mean, scary movie five.
[3:40] \[SPEAKER_01\]: It wasn't quite a bomb.
[3:42] \[SPEAKER_01\]: The budget was 20 million, but it definitely, it was nowhere near as good, and that's why they stopped it.
[3:48] \[SPEAKER_01\]: And no, I think the first scary movie was the most successful one.
[3:52] \[SPEAKER_01\]: It looks like was it?
[3:53] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Oh, okay.
[3:54] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Yeah.
[3:55] \[SPEAKER_03\]: I mean, I remember that was one of the first movies I saw.
[3:58] \[SPEAKER_01\]: I think the first scary movie is probably that the record that you're talking about.
[4:02] \[SPEAKER_01\]: The first scary movie.
[4:03] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Yeah, because the 42 million.
[4:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Box a lie.
[4:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: I thought of a scary movie too.
[4:08] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Yeah.
[4:09] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Well, no, no.
[4:09] \[SPEAKER_01\]: You gave, you gave a good description of the lore.
[4:13] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Uh, Regina Regina Hall.
[4:16] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Oh, there's been a dress.
[4:17] \[SPEAKER_01\]: The lore has been a dress.
[4:18] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Regina Hall and if, and if, and a Ferris were in the first uh, three, what they in for is well, yeah, she was a, yeah, they were all, they were in all four and all five was the one they weren't in and then like Simon Rex and Charlie
[4:36] \[SPEAKER_03\]: Which can I say, I've been watching a lot of press on this and another spot I can ask is about like people of color, but I just want to give Anna Ferris a shout out because all these interviews she's doing is making me so sad because when you hear about how little she's worked and how
[4:57] \[SPEAKER_03\]: people don't like hire and her for certain things and I think how people will saw again comedy being such a low hanging fruit.
[5:04] \[SPEAKER_03\]: You just see this shock in her face that like she was shocked.
[5:08] \[SPEAKER_03\]: She heard they got the rice back and she was like, oh, they probably would just want me to do a cameo.
[5:13] \[SPEAKER_03\]: She was like, I guess I can just do a cameo.
[5:15] \[SPEAKER_03\]: I need the money in a quarter to be in the actual movie and she was like, what?
[5:19] \[SPEAKER_03\]: Like in shock.
[5:21] \[SPEAKER_03\]: And it's just something so crazy to me.
[5:23] \[SPEAKER_03\]: And he here talk about all the things she didn't get in her blood and you hear like Marlin kind of talk about what it was like getting her in the movie.
[5:30] \[SPEAKER_03\]: And I'm like, yo, Hollywood is such a evil machine.
[5:36] \[SPEAKER_03\]: But like it's just like, I just looked at this lady like, yo, this is crazy.
[5:38] \[SPEAKER_03\]: You are so funny to me when I was younger.
[5:40] \[SPEAKER_03\]: And the fact that you're talking about like no one likes you because you were in these parody movies and they thought they were just stupid movies.
[5:48] \[SPEAKER_03\]: I'm like, right.
[5:50] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Anyway, I mean, yeah, oh, I totally forgot to say, but you guys know that obviously we're a film review podcast and we review the film's leading black actors talk about the consequences of race and diversity in Hollywood.
[6:00] \[SPEAKER_03\]: What's going on, man?
[6:01] \[SPEAKER_03\]: What's going on?
[6:03] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Well, it's just we're in Patreon, so.
[6:04] \[SPEAKER_03\]: I know, but you've been, the brain, you've been.
[6:07] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Yeah, but that, you know, I'm a brain, but you know,
[6:13] \[SPEAKER_01\]: You ain't flout the New York yet.
[6:14] \[SPEAKER_01\]: What's going on James I just sometimes I just see I just like you know people are People aren't trying and then I'm like I'm I try Sometimes I play
[6:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: is a pair, this podcast itself is a parody of scary movie.
[6:38] \[SPEAKER_01\]: I see.
[6:38] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Okay, here's the thing, and this is, this voice that you're listening to, that feels like this voice.
[6:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: I was like, you been taught me?
[6:48] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Well, I'm just saying the voice that they're listening to.
[6:51] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Great, that sounds like somebody who could probably write or really great comedy film and should.
[6:58] \[SPEAKER_01\]: That's John at the Brain.
[7:00] \[SPEAKER_03\]: you know what man actually we have written a really great comedy film and somebody needs to make it you know what to be honest I almost take shot last night in the bed of this movie and was like we should write a horror movie I was like honestly yeah we should straight up play yeah
[7:18] \[SPEAKER_03\]: We should straight up write a hard movie and also I was thinking about who are you would you tell the people They break we're 10 minutes in they know They know This voice right now that is trying to get James and John to write a hard movie so we would come rich and famous is
[7:44] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And this boy's that is confused because I don't think we introduce our voices on Patreon.
[7:52] \[SPEAKER_02\]: So this boy's that is confused as what is even happening.
[7:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Oh, they're failing everything.
[7:58] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Well, I just kind of want to, I wanted to get into initial thoughts because I think that's usually the cutoff point for the free people.
[8:04] \[SPEAKER_01\]: So.
[8:06] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Bye.
[8:07] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Bye.
[8:18] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I mean, can't jump.
