Three simple principles enable us to understand the whole range of structures that we see in the universe. This lecture considers the importance of 'size' in determining what can happen to a piece of matter in the universe and whether it can come alive. It then looks at the problem of determining what the universe is made of, distinguishing luminous matter from dark matter and dark energy. This leads to an investigation into what these dark sides of the universe might be and whether we can identify them in the future.
