This lecture begins the Opera and The City series with a journey back to the very earliest years of Italian opera, exploring the relationship between the composer Claudio Monteverdi and Venice. Old-fashioned histories of the “birth” of opera tended to imagine the genre’s gradual emergence as a majestic grand tour through famous Italian cultural centres, but this perspective has now become old-fashioned.
