Arguably, the artistic achievements of humans are the most significant single feature that distinguishes us qualitatively from other species. Even Chimpanzee art is a pale imitation of what a human child can produce without significant external motivation. While we are often more predisposed to try to explain the reasons why the human brain is capable of greater intelligence than any other species on the planet, we also have at least some understanding of what promotes artistic motivation, temperament and skill.
