Success in achieving a true sense of identity of self in relation to the world might engender feelings of individual worth and purpose in humans but is this true of other species? Establishing that other species have self-awareness has proved a difficult task but this lecture endeavours to summarise what such studies have shown and whether the "ugly duckling" syndrome of the animal that "knows" it is a misfit is a human anthropomorphism or a reality.
