In the context of high precision timing distribution there is a growing awareness of phase instabilities. Novel solutions are relying on phase tracking and phase shifting to stabilize clocks and data streams. AMD transceivers provide an ultra fine phase shifter (phase interpolator), with a step smaller than 2 ps, which can be controlled by the user to phase shift the transmitted data. This device presents non linearities which worsen the accuracy of the nominal step size, up to an error of 3 ps. This research presents a characterization of the non linearity of the phase interpolator, describing its variability over temperature, firmware recompilations and different transceivers. It is shown how to consider the characteristic of non linearity to improve a phase compensation algorithm. The shift steps can be chosen based on the knowledge of the error distribution over the range of the phase interpolator, to improve its accuracy.
