Designing and building an energetic particle instrument always requires trade-offs in size, cost, resolution, dynamic range, etc. Although the particles are the same, the trade-offs are different for instruments at an accelerator than they are for instruments in space. The science goals are also typically different, but in many cases, spacecraft instruments rely on accelerator science to understand their observations. This talk will describe some of the new acceleration science that is coming from NASA spacecraft such as the Parker Solar Probe and the newly launched Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP). It will also include discussion of the similarities and differences between spacecraft and terrestrial instruments.
