The JUNO (Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory) experiment is a gigantic liquid scintillator neutrino detector, built in southern China, with a size of 20,000 tons, whose primary goal is to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, in addition to the high-precision measurement of some of the parameters governing the neutrino oscillation phenomenon; furthermore, it has been designed to realize also a large number of astro-particle investigations. After a decade of preparation, the installation and filling of JUNO have been recently completed, data taking started at the end of August, and the first result released after two months of operation, already improving upon existing data. The seminar will illustrate physics potentials and objectives of the experiment, review briefly the various systems and subsystems that compose it and describe the initial performances of the detector. Finally, the first oscillation results related to the values of the so called "solar" oscillation parameters Dm221 and sin2q12 will be described.
