The Einstein Telescope (ET) is a third-generation European gravitational wave observatory, currently in a preparatory phase of development. To satisfy its science case, ET is required to supersede the sensitivity of current-generation detectors by a factor 10 to 1.000.000 - depending on the frequency range. On top of this and by nature of design, interferometry-based gravitational wave detectors provide an extraordinary challenge of system functional and physics-driven interconnectedness. Complex and highly integrated subsystems distribute the high-level system functions over large spatial distances and with great co-dependency. A fundamental challenge in this early project phase is therefore to increase the understanding of subsystem requirements, interfaces and dependencies through the use of a traceable and scalable Requirements Management framework. A timeline highlighting the developments made together with RWTH Aachen demonstrates the potential of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles used in conjunction with an advanced toolchain, interfacing Jama Connect, CATIA Magic and 3DExperience to professionalize the management of ET's technical configuration. Still, much work is required to improve from proof-of-concept and limited-scope exercises to a continuous and scalable contribution to ET's active development work. Examples of work anticipating this transition include the effort to formalize the conceptual (MB)SE processes, technical configuration management developments to enable a traceable requirements management framework and a plan for the step-wise introduction of the professional toolchain–taking into account different user profiles.
