An audiobook by Anton Chekhov, read by LibriVox volunteers (8 h 28 min, English).

"The Shooting Party" is a mystery, set in the Russian countryside. The story revolves around the murder of a beautiful young woman named Olga, who is found dead in a forest. The narrator, a magistrate named Sergei Kamyshev, recounts the events leading up to the crime, mixed with his own personal experiences and emotions. We learn about Olga's various relationships, with her fiancé, the impoverished and idealistic schoolteacher Urbenin, and Kamyshev himself, who is deeply infatuated with her. The unfolding mystery explores themes of love, jealousy, and the darker side of human nature, as the characters' motivations and secrets are gradually revealed. The investigation into Olga's murder is marked by twists and turns, leading to a shocking and tragic conclusion. Chekhov combines romance, drama, and suspense, creating a rich and consuming narrative that peers into the complexities of human relationships and the consequences of unchecked passions. - Summary by Bryn Roberts
