After her marriage to Jais Nielsen, much of the subject matter for Ville Jais-Nielsen’s art was found within the confines of the family home, first in their flat in Vesterbro, then in a detached house on Tjørnevej in Lyngby and from 1933 on Vingårds Allé in Hellerup. Their son, Henrik Jais-Nielsen (b. 1930), states that it was often the children’s lot to model for their mother. However, the family’s lively social life also provided suitable subject matter. Henrik Jais-Nielsen says: ‘... even while mother was still alive, my parents arranged a number of musical evenings with invited friends and acquaintances. My father’s co- worker for many years, Mogens Frese, played the violin, and a lady called Margrete Dahl played the piano. \[…\] The guests were seated around the musicians in a relaxed manner, and a new friend of the family, Bjørn Wiinblad, would quite naturally lay on the floor to draw his poetic figures, which would later become a million-dollar business.’ The guests were primarily Jais Nielsen’s circle of acquaintances. Ville Jais-Nielsen got her own circle of artist friends during her exile in Sweden in 1943–45.
