Jonas Witsen inherited the Waterland, Surimombo, and Palmeneribo plantations from his wife Elisabeth Basseliers. He sent the painter Dirk Valkenburg to Surinam to inspect these sites. In the foreground of the painting are some Lokono, among the original inhabitants of this region. The many people who worked in slavery on the plantation are missing in this representation.
