With the conclusion of the peace treaty of 1784, the French vice-admiral Pierre André de Suffren de Saint-Tropez was honoured as a ‘hero’ by France and the Netherlands. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) presented him with this box containing a gold medal for having prevented the Dutch colonies in Africa and Asia from falling into British hands.
