Sterntor in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany The Sterntor is the last remaining city gate of Bonn’s medieval city fortifications. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when Bonn was surrounded by a city wall with several gates. The Sterntor formed the northern entrance to the city and was part of the defensive fortifications of the Electorate of Cologne. Over the centuries, the gate lost its military significance. When large parts of the city wall were demolished in the 19th century, the Sterntor was initially preserved, but was demolished in 1898 due to road construction measures. On the initiative of Bonn citizens, the structure was rebuilt in 1900 at its current location—close to its original site—using historical components. Stones from other demolished city gates were also integrated into the new structure.
