Ilse Falls in the Ilsetal in Harz National Park near Ilsenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany The Ilse Valley is located on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains near Ilsenburg. It is one of the most beautiful valleys in the low mountain range and is characterized by dense mixed forests, rugged granite rocks, and a natural mountain stream—the Ilse. The Ilse Falls are particularly well known. These are not a single high waterfall, but a series of small cascades where the water plunges over rock steps into the valley. After rainfall or during snowmelt, they carry a particularly large amount of water and appear impressively wild. The Ilse Valley was already a popular destination for Romanticists in the 19th century. Poets such as Heinrich Heine mentioned the Ilse in their works. Today, the area is part of the Harz National Park and a popular hiking area with well-maintained trails along the rushing mountain stream.
